The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden
“Armageddon was a fire in the harbor, a box delivered on a cold day. It wasn't one great tragedy, but ten million tiny ones, and everyone faced theirs alone.”

No mercy at all in that face, but who needed mercy when someone looked at you like that, like he understood every thought that passed through your mind? Like he would know every nuance of your soul before he devoured it?

If I had a coin for every historical novel set in WWI with gay soldiers that I've read, now I would have three coins.
Which is not much, but it's quite a coincidence.

Library haul!!!
Tumblr media
This is definitely a MUCH better financial decision than my last couple trips to the bookstore 😅 I have an even mix of fiction and nonfiction right now, and I’m excited to get to all of these… even if I know I’ll have to renew some of them a few times before I’m able to finish them 🫣 And this isn’t even counting the ebooks I have on Libby right now!!!

Read this book immediately when it comes out next month!

A nurse, back home from the front lines of WWI, begins to suspect that her missing brother might be alive. But when she returns to find answers, a mysterious figure haunts her days. And when she discovers that this otherworldly being might know where her brother is, she vows to stop at nothing until she finally knows the truth.
Beautifully written and well-paced, Katherine Arden's newest novel is a tender but evocative look at the realities of war, told through the twin perspectives of a brother and sister. Alongside the harshness of conflict, the book peppers in the supernatural and makes a compelling case for how blind humanity can be to it's own destruction.
Easiest 5 stars I've given to a book on ages!
Out: FEB 2024

You ever get to a point in a book where you're like "oh no, this is going to break my heart" and then you have to stop reading for a little bit to steel yourself before you get your heart broken?
Yeah, me neither.

as previously mentioned, i have been working on a warm hands of ghosts fanart-comic type thing because i love drawing little comics, and this felt like an excellent excuse if im honest
we are on page 3 out of potentially 5 or 6 (maybe 8 if i get carried away) and i have been putting my whole soul into it, so we will seeee when i can get that up and posted bearing in mind i am not well at the moment
little sneak peek + more rambles down here :
Tumblr media
it is heavily based on the last few pages of the book, so pretty intense spoilers obviously but its MASSIVELY self indulgent, features my own daft designs for Freddie, Winter, Laura, plus small cameos from Faland and Pim, which probably arent the most lore accurate ever but are still very fun to draw and :) we will see how it turns out. it was completely inspired by my dear friend @kkatz0 who came up with the idea for a sketch and i just took it WAY too far and now im about 12 hours in no joke
i want to post it all at once, because ive designed it to scroll quite nicely and its not really alllll that long, but i love making fanart surrounding the book so we will see what comes in the future
ANYWAY sorry this has become a massive long thing and I am ngl i am so tired and sore so i am going to go to bed, and ill try and post again soon
also sorry to the warrior cats fans who have been taken along for an absolute RIDE with the warm hands of ghosts content. guys im sorry but the book is absolutely excellent. my vocabulary is not enough to express how deeply it touched my soul
thank you for reading this far if you have :]

Everyone who is like me needs to read The Warm Hands Of Ghosts by Katherine Arden right now. It feels like reading a statement from The Magnus Archives, it's queer, it's really upsetting, it's based in World War I, it destroyed me so much, it's beautiful, it's gutwrenching, it's one of the best books I've ever read.
Wilfred Iven is stuck in a pillbox with a German soldier after an attack on Passchendaele. Despite their odds, they escape, and are met with an elusive battlefield legend known as The Fiddler.
Laura Iven is told by three crazy mediums that her brother isn't dead. So she makes her way to Poperinge, Belgium with her friend Penelope Shaw and boss Mary Borden, reinstated as a nurse in the war hospital under the eye of Stephen Jones, an American doctor.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I read about half of The Warm Hands of Ghosts (and finished the novel today) and it put me in such a book hangover + plus left me feeling so bleak and sad that my mom was like “are you alright?”
It was a 5 star book and will probably be one of my favorites for the year, but damn Katherine Arden did not pull any punches
