Goretober 2022 Day 25: In Sheep's Clothing
[BEGIN TRANSCRIPT]
The fifth time we met, I helped them move in.
By then, Iād been making my rounds in the multiverse for aroundā¦four and a halfā¦ five thousandā¦ish years? Give or take a few decadesā¦ or centuriesā¦ When youāve been around for that long, years start to feel more like weeks. Jim did his best to help me keep track, but it wasnāt really importantā¦ The point is, Iād been around the block more than a few times. There were a lot of patterns Iād noticed by then, and Iād started getting pretty good at predicting them, but, there was always a chance of new variable getting thrown in the mix and steering things in a very different direction than Iād expectedā¦.
In that timeline, the cult had been making pretty typical moves. I still hadnāt told Larry and Todd about my immortal universe-hopper deal- that usually only makes them less receptive to other informationā¦- but, I had gotten them on board with the fact that the building had a nefarious past and that a number of the residents had less-that-savory scenes playing out behind closed doors in slightly-above-average time. We regularly checked the security system for suspicious activity and had stopped Mrs. Packerton's āoperationsā much earlier than average. The few newcomers who had moved in since then were treated with a healthy amount of suspicion and monitored heavily by our little group until it was clear that they werenāt up to anything culty or demony or cannibalistic.Ā
We were all in our first year of college when we heard that a new tenant was moving into the building for the first time in a while, and as luck would have it, they had been assigned the room next to mine, room 404, which would make it a piece of cake to keep an eye on them until they were proven innocent. The three of us had installed cameras in the room prior to their expected move-in date to make sure that our new neighbor was actually a new neighbor and not a cultist stationed to pull the trigger on āthe big nightā.Ā
When we met them, Larry and I were going somewhere. I canāt really remember whereā¦. The gas station, the diner, the library, Toddsā¦ It was just a typical day of no note until we exited the elevator on the first floor, and I stopped in my tracks as the doors slid shut behind us.
Mr. Addison called to us in his signature overly-cheerful voice from the mail slot in his door:
āOh, Mr. Fisher, Mr. Johnson! Just who I was hoping to seeā¦,ā
Ā Larry approached, and I managed to follow.
In front of the door, a petite, dark-haired 20-something was seated on her haunches in order to be at eye level with Addison. She looked up at both of us with a wide-eyed, open-mouthed stare after she finished a gulp from the coffee mug she was holding in her hand.Ā
The recognition hit me in the gut. The button nose, the pale skin, the big eyes with long lashes, the crooked teeth, that this time seemed a little too large for her mouth, sticking out from under her pierced lipā¦. A section of her bangs was kept out of her eyes by a couple of hair clips. They were decorated with little hearts and a strawberry.Ā
My heart soared as quick as my stomach sank. I knew her name before Addison told us.
āThis is Mrs.-ā
āAh- oh, just, ah, āMitch,ā is fine, Mr. Addisonā¦,ā Her voice was small, but deeper than youād expect.
āVery well! This is Mitch, the newest addition to our little family of tenants. Sheāll be moving in today, and I thought you two strapping lads wouldnāt mind helping her with her boxes.ā
She seemed overly panicked at the idea of us helping her. āOh, no- ah, thatās okay! I donāt wanna bother them, I can-ā
āSure, no problem,ā Larry, being the maintenance persons son, was used to being the designated muscle when someone in the building needed some heavy lifting done.Ā
āAh- Itās fine, really! It looks like you guys are on your way out, I really donāt wanna impose-ā she was shaking her head and waving her hand frantically and sweating and turning redā¦. She seemed so nervousā¦ weirdly sheepish, for a Mitchā¦Ā
āNah, itās no problem. Weāre not really doing anythingā¦. Right, Sal?ā Larry elbowed me in the ribs.
Weād all agreed that it would make things easier to be especially neighborly to the newcomer in order to gain their trust, and being invited to handle their belongings, enter their new home, and make a good impression all at once was a best-case scenario in our surveillance plans.Ā
It took me a second to answer. This whole scene was a lot to process: Mitch, of all people, in the flesh after all this time, curled up in a little ball at mine and Larry's feet, casually chatting with Addison, holding a cup of his ācoffeeā, half-gone, in their hands, about to move into the death trap that was Addison Apartmentsā¦.
Ā I felt like I might vomit on the carpet, but that wouldnāt have been a great fifth first impression on my part.Ā I swallowed back the bile that had come bubbling up in my throat.
āY-yeah,ā my voice cracked, and I wanted to punch myself in the face. āWeād be happy to help!ā
āUmā¦,ā They glanced up and stared at me, up and down and up again without blinking, with an expression that lookedā¦ frazzled? Timid? Kind of puzzled orā¦ maybe ābewilderedā would be a better wordā¦? Then they averted their gaze back to the floor.Ā
ā....Okay, I, if you really-ā¦ uh, thanks, I really appreciate itā¦!ā
They stood and downed the rest of their ācoffeeā like a shot, moving to hand the cup back to Addison, who did not take it from her.
āUhā¦ oh! I- Iām sorry, did- do you want me to wash this before I give it back, orā¦?ā
āNonsense, dear, you keep that mug for later! Iām always happy to make coffee for my tenants, and Iām sure youāll be back for more very, very soon~ā His tone was more playful and sing-songy than usual. Fucking prickā¦.
āOh- yeah, sure, ah, definitely! Iāll be- Thank you so muchā¦!,ā Mitch gave an exaggerated nod to her new landlord and held the mug to her chest.
āOf course, of course! Now, be sure to show her whats-what, gentleman! I trust youāll make her feel right at home- Iām counting on you two~āĀ
āSure thing, Terrence.ā
āSheās in good hands.āĀ
Larry gave a little salute, and with that, Mr. Addison closed his mail slot, leaving the three of us alone in the hallway. Mitch drummed their fingers on the mug, rocking back and forth on their heels, looking everywhere but directly at us for a few admittedly awkward moments. They snapped back to attention suddenly.Ā Ā
āAh! Oh, sorry, yeah, I guess we should, uhā¦ā They seemed so nervous, and I kept asking myself why, but I wasnāt sure I wanted to know the answerā¦
āMy- ah, my car is parked out front, so, aā¦ā she pointed behind her with her thumb.
āBut really, you guys donāt have to- it just looks like a lot, but most of the boxes are really light, so I can get them myself! You donāt have toā¦ā she was flushed and waving her hand again. I felt a foreboding dread prickle over my neck.
āNah, itās cool, donāt sweat it,ā Larry gave her a little smile and wink as he walked past her, laying on the charm, I hoped for the sake of the surveillance mission.Ā
We both followed him, Mitch a step behind us the whole way, stuttering over forced small talk. We made a few trips back and forth, helping her carry boxes from their car to the elevator and into her new apartment. She was very adamant about carrying certain ones herself, and thanked us and apologized for no real reason over and over and over again. When all the boxes had been carried up, they apologized and thanked us again, and promised she would do something for us to return the favor once she was settled in. We told her to come and see us any time, and that I was right next door if she needed anything, and she thanked us again before she gave an overly-enthusiastic nod and wave goodbye, then shut the door to the room that was now officially her home.Ā
Once we were back in the elevator, heading to Todds place to report that the new neighbor had officially arrived and to turn the cameras in their apartment on, Larry commented,
āWell, that was kinda weirdā¦ not really weird weird, but still weirdā¦.ā
Ā I agreed to that understatement.
āStill, sheās kinda cute, huh..?ā
I felt like my stomach was gonna drop straight out of my ass and onto the floor.
ā...Yeah, she isā¦ kinda cuteā¦ā
āHa, Iām sorta jealousā¦ā he elbowed me in the ribs again. āCult-status pending, it looks like you just got yourself an Awkward Girl-Next-Door, huh, Sally? Lucky youā¦~ā
āHeh, yeahā¦ lucky meā¦.ā

Goretober 2022 Day 31: Soulmates pt. 1
[BEGIN TRANSCRIPT]
The sixth time we met, I ran into you while you were grocery shopping.
Iād already found you, and had been keeping track of you and your blog for about a month. Ā Iād already found your IP address, all your passwords to your emails and other accounts, and your bank information. It was pretty easy to figure out your schedule from all that. Youāve said it yourself in multiple timelines- youāre a creature of habit. You like doing the same things over and over again, which works out great for me. I figured out your sleep and work schedules based on when you made posts, and looking at your credit card statement, I knew you went grocery shopping at the same supermarket, on the same day, around the same time every week. I knew that was one of the few places that I could run into you and I would get to see you up close and in-person for the first time again, since pretty much everything else was shut down by then.
When I spotted you, you were in the produce section. I knew it was you right away- your heart-print sweater, something like you wore during the fifth time we were together, was a dead give-away. Heh, you were shorter than Iād expected, but it looked like you were still pretty sturdy under those oversized clothesā¦ I got closer, trying to look casual, pretending to browse through the bins until I managed to side-saddle up against your cart and get a good look at you. You had big eyes with long lashes, pale skin, dark hair that was longer and more wild than Iād ever seen you wear itā¦ it looks good on you. I really like itā¦ do you mind if Iā¦?
ā¦
Uh, okay, maybe laterā¦ well, I couldnāt see if you had your lip piercing or crooked teeth, since that bugās been going around and everyone is wearing masks, but I didnāt need to. The mask you were wearing had a printed-on smile that looked exactly like the one you had the fourth time I found you. It was really, really cute to see it on you in personā¦ You were holding a box of strawberries, and you carefully inspected them before you put them in your cart. Food quality is important to you, just like the second time we were togetherā¦. Thatās why I double-checked that everything I got for us to eat while weāre here is really fresh! We just have to actually, yaāknowā¦ eat itā¦ before it goes badā¦?
ā¦.
[sigh]
While you did that, I was staring at you... I couldnāt help it, I was so, so happy to see you, Mitchieā¦ I wanted to call you by your name, give you a big hug, and tell you how much Iād missed you and how much I love youā¦ I think you noticed. You glanced up at me, and from what I could tell, you smiled at me from under your mask before you carried on with your routine grocery shopping tripā¦.Ā
Eheh, did you recognize me? Huh? Cāmon, you can tell meā¦
ā¦.
Anywayā¦ I trailed behind you, watching you be youā¦. It wasnāt hard, because you were so focused on the task at hand, and you took a very predictable route through the store. Produce, dry goods, then refrigerated stuff, so they wouldnāt be left out at room temperature for too longā¦ You checked your list often and compared prices on everything, and I took note of what you picked up so I would know what to get for when I brought you here. I know you like to eat the same things a lotā¦ I made sure to make special notes about the things you put back while shaking your head, probably because they were 'too expensive' for you to justify buying for yourself. I wanted to treat you, since this is a really special occasionā¦~Ā
I noticed you picked up a lot of produce and fresh meat, but not a lot of ready-made or snack food- I was happy to see that you were taking care of yourself and that you cooked at home, because it meant we would be able to cook together again while we were hereā¦ if you want toā¦
.......
ā¦ You did get more caffeinated drinks than I wanted you too, but I wasnāt really surprised, since thatās a habit you have a lotā¦. You picked up a bottle of vodka and a bottle of wine, but only one of each, which was honestly a reliefā¦ Donāt get me wrong, I loved you when you were a big drinker, but it got ā¦ kind of out of hand, sometimesā¦.Ā
While you did your rounds, I heard you talking to yourself about what you needed to buy, and you said āexcuse meā and āthank youā to the staff and fellow shoppers you passed, like, a lot. Iām glad that youāre so polite in this timeline, too, but also happy that you donāt take as much shit as you have beforeā¦ My favorite part of watching you during that trip was when I saw you find an empty aisle, and you took a running start and rode your cart down it, after youād looked both ways to make sure you wouldnāt run into anyone. Fun and spontaneous, but also cautious and considerateā¦ I also noticed that sometimes, youād hold your fist out a little at your side, almost like you were holding the hand of someone that wasnāt thereā¦ I wanted to reach out and take it, but that would have kinda blown my coverā¦ [laughing]
When youād checked everything off your list, I watched you go through the checkout. You made polite chit-chat with the cashier and used some coupons- frugal- but you didnāt fuss when a few of them didnāt work- youāre understanding, tooā¦.
I followed you out into the parking lot to see you off, but I saw an opportunity to sneak into the back seat of your car and hide myself under some of the trash and stuff on the floor, like the first time we were together, while you were putting your cart back. You got caught up organizing the other carts that other people hadnāt bothered to put away properly- You donāt like when people arenāt considerate, just like the first time, and I think I saw you bitching to yourself about it the whole time you were doing it, just like you would have the second timeā¦
When you got in the car, you fastened your seatbelt first-thing, and while you drove, you used your turn signal and followed the speed limit and you talked shit about some other motorists that werenāt being courteous. You also belted out the lyrics to the music you played- it was a lot like how you drove the first and second time, except now, you sometimes looked over at the passengers seat and smiled at nothingā¦. I wanted so badly to crawl up to the front and sing with you in the car againā¦ but Iām patient. We can do that when I take you back home laterā¦
When you got home from your shopping trip, I snuck out of your car while you were carrying bags of groceries up to your apartment. The number of bags you grabbed at a time confirmed my theory that you were strong this time, but I still wished I could have helped you with themā¦Ā
I kept watching through the windows of your apartment all night so I could get a glimpse of you being you in your natural habitat, like I got to see the fifth time. You came out on your porch in the evening with a mug of something- probably coffee, liked you tend to like- and smoked weed out of a big glass bong, a lot like the one you had the third time. You looked like you were feeling pretty good, and when you went back inside, I watched you pacing back and forth for about 45 minutes straight. It reminded me of the walks we used to take in my room the fourth time we were togetherā¦. You were staring off at nothing while you did that, talking and gesturing to no one. And then, you sat down for a while, and a new post about me appeared on your blog. I realized you must have been daydreaming of me while you were pacing, just like I used to daydream about you during our āwalksā, and like how we daydreamed about each other in just about every timeline before our honeymoons began in themā¦.
You stayed up late- youāre a night owl, like you usually are- and I stayed there watching until you went to sleep. Then, I crawled back into the back seat of your car to get some rest, and I drifted off imagining that I was in your bed with you, and youād kissed me goodnight before you turned out the lightsā¦
I know itās been hard on you, but thanks to the quarantine making you stay home where I could watch you, and you posting on your blog all the time about all the things you imagined and remembered doing with me to cope, I was able to learn a lot about this version of you, and I was able to put all of this together for us. I wanted to make sure everything was perfectā¦ a perfect place for the two of us to spend our sixth honeymoon togetherā¦ the perfect getaway to where we always wanted to go on vacation, where it could be just the two of us, having fun and spending time together doing whatever we want to doā¦ and then, when our time together ends, Iāll be gone, youāll be able to go right back to your life. After October, thisāll all just be a memory that feels like a dream, like none of it ever happenedā¦.Ā
Thatās all I want from this, Mitchie. Please, please let me do that for usā¦ we donāt have a lot of time left. Letās just make the most of it, okayā¦?

"Remember when I first started training you, Sally?"
"Ha, yeah, I had a lot to learn back then..."
"Eh, we all gotta start somewhere. I was a little worried at first, but you caught on so fast! You're a natural, Sally. I wouldn't want anybody else by my side in the thick of it."
"Thanks, Mitchie. I feel the same way..."

Goretober 2022 Day 19: One Mans Trash
[BEGIN TRANSCRIPT]
The fourth time we met, I found them sitting in a box.
Iād been going through the motions for aroundā¦ 4,000 years then, I think? It was getting harder and harder to keep track of the exact numberā¦.Ā
Iād been doing my usual thing- hopping, living, fighting, dying, hopping againā¦ it wasā¦ getting a little boring, if Iām being honest. Things were starting to get repetitive and blur together... I was having a hard time keeping details straight. Most of the time it really didnāt matter, though. People just thought I was kinda spacy, or that I was making some sort of joke when I didnāt know about some huge thing in the current-universe zeitgeistā¦ I learned not to get myself down about it. How was I supposed to know when nobody had bothered to tell me? It was interesting to see the different things people could come up with, anyway- I was always receptive to retrying something that was the same, but a little different, just to mix up the monotony of immortalityā¦. Well, almost alwaysā¦. You get what I mean.
[chuckling] Larry gave me such a hard time when I didnāt know what they- it, was....
Lisa had called us up at the house and told us that she was cleaning out the lost and found box for the apartments, and if we wanted to, we could come look through it before she chucked it in the church donation bin. We werenāt about to pass up free stuff, so we went to sift through the trash and see if we couldnāt find some novelty treasures.
There was a lot of what youād expect in there- some old moth-ridden coats and hats, cheap umbrellas, a few mismatched shoes and random papersā¦ we thought our quest would be fruitless, until we dug to the very bottom and saw a pair of heart-shaped keychains sitting together in the dust.
āOh, shit, no way! Check it outā¦!āĀ
Larry plucked one of the keychains out of the box. It was purple with a small, bat-shaped charm attached to the loop mounted in the side.
āI havenāt seen one of these things in forever!ā
āWhat is it?ā
āDude, come onā¦ā
āWhat? What is it?ā
ā...Itās an S.O., dudeā¦.ā
āAn āess ohāā¦?ā
I picked up the one that Larry had left in the box and turned it over. Its scuffed-up plastic shell was pink with white buttons, and it had a little scratched up screen in the middle. There was a strawberry-shaped charm attached to the loop mounted in the side.
Ā It lookedā¦ really familiarā¦.
āYou canāt be serious, manā¦ Itās an S.O.- you know, a āsimulated otherā...? They were the big thing around Christmas a few years agoā¦?ā
Iād only been hanging around in that timeline for about a year at that point, so I wasnāt up-to-speed on the hot holidays trends of seasons past.Ā
āUhā¦ oh yeah, I think Iāve heard of thoseā¦ā
He rolled his eyes and then looked his over for a second.
āDude,ā Larry snickered, āā¦ letās start em up, itāll be hilariousā¦ā
āUh, okayā¦?ā
I watched Larry tap on the heart-shaped button below the screen. A sing-song tone played. He tapped one of the side buttons. Another tone. A few seconds later, he threw his head back with a laugh.Ā
āHoly shit, awesome! I got me a keeper, bro, look-ā
He turned the keychain around to show me. There was a little pixelated bust of a bored-looking girl with heavy eyeliner and choppy, blunt-cut bangs bobbing on the screen. A speech bubble with a skull, then ellipses, then a purple heart came from its mouth.
āAhaha, got me a hot goth g.f. on the first try! Niceā¦ā I had to admit, she did look like his type, in a lot of different timelinesā¦.
āAlright Sally, your turn. Letās see what ya getā¦~ā
I imitated what Iād watch him do with my own keychain. I tapped the heart-shaped button, a sing-song tone played, and a selection screen came on:
It's been a while!
>Continue
>New Game
Larry told me to select a new game. I did. The S.O. icon faded in and stayed in place for a second. When the ellipses beneath it reached four dots, another tone played, and a little pixelated bust appeared on the screen. It had dark hair, styled in braids, pale skin, huge eyes with long lashes, a little button nose, a big crooked smile with two pixels that I assumed served as lip piercingsā¦
A speech bubble with an exclamation point, then a heart, then scrolling text came from its mouth.
Deja vu came over me. My heart fluttered and my stomach sank. I realized then why the keychain looked so familiar.
The text read:
Hi, Iām Mitch, your new S.O.!
Itās nice to meet you š
>Continue
>New game
ā¦. There they-.... it wasā¦.. Iād found them again, in a senseā¦ they had been waiting for me right under my nose, sitting in the dark, and now, they were right here, in the palm of my handā¦ [traces his palm with his fingers]
Larry looked at the screen and said, āHey, sheās kinda cuteā¦ you wanna keep her, or do you wanna try it again?ā
He had no idea how loaded that question wasā¦.
āUh, yeah, Iāmā¦ I think Iām gonna stick with this one.ā
āNice. Ha, look at us- we have giiiirlfriends now! Ahahahā¦ā He dangled his S.O. by the chain and laughed, jingling it around like the toy it was.Ā
āDude, we can go on fuckinā, like, ādouble datesā and stuff, show off our āladiesāā¦ oh man, this is gonna be a riotā¦ā
I said, āYeah, thisāll beā¦ a lot of fun.ā
I cradled my S.O.-... I cradled Mitch, in my hands, and held it as gently, and as firmly, as I could. I wiped a little of the grime from its screen, and another heart emoji came from its mouthā¦.
It was them, and as usual, it felt the sameā¦ just a little different.

Goretober 2022 Day 5: Happily Ever After
I told Mitch everything last night. Well, not everything, but the gist-
āI donāt know if this is real or not. I know that, to you, Iāve been here the whole time, but to me, you died thousands of years ago. Iāve missed you so much, Mitchie. Ever since we parted, Iāve been trying to find you as I traveled through time and space. I promised you I wouldā¦ I found you five times after this. Youāve been different each time, but Iāve loved you, each of you, all the same. Iāve been living with the sixth version of you I found for three years now. Itās not perfect, but thatās okay. Weāre happy and living a pretty normal life together. Weāre supposed to be celebrating our anniversary this month. I went to bed with them on the 30th, kissed them goodnight, and then I woke up here, next to you. I donāt know why, or how, or whatās going on with the door, or if this is a dream or the longest glitch Iāve ever had or what. I didnāt want to spoil the mood by telling you all of this until it became obvious something was off. I wanted to enjoy this time with you again while I could, even if itās all in my headā¦. Iām so sorry itās not going how we planned.ā
After a few minutes of processing, she started choking up. She said it was the most romantic story sheād ever heard. She started gushing about destiny, soulmates, reincarnation, true love, the thread of fate that must tie us together across the cosmosā¦ She could hardly believe it was all true, but was so, so happy that it was.
āI knew it had to be realā¦ I knew I felt something when I saw you for the first time! I had faith that you were telling the truth when you told everybody about your situation in your interviews, and what you told me in your letters, but seeing a piece of it with my own eyes like thisā¦ I really believe now. I believe you. Itās all true! Sally, my sweet little pumpkinā¦ there must be a reason youāve come back to me nowā¦. Maybe, itās all been leading to this- Itās got to be destiny! It has to be! I mean, it's us...! I think we just need to figure out the last step together- one more little obstacle, and then we can really start living the life weāve been dreaming of- the two of us, together foreverā¦!ā
I think that maybe, just maybe, shes onto something.... That would explain why this glitch isn't ending. Her guess is as good as any of the others I can come up with. After so many tries, maybe this is my shot at a happy ending with the original- a chance to do it right, really keep my promise to her, have an honest-to-god do-overā¦ Ā if we can figure out how to get out of here together. That, or Iām going to wake up in the sixth Mitchies arms any second, tell them I just had the nicest dream, and then weāll get our staycation started as planned and keep living our happy lives as usual. Maybe it's both?Either way sounds pretty sweet to me.
ā¦
I donāt really want to consider any other possibilities right now. I donāt want to spoil the mood.

Goretober 2022 Day 4: No Exit
We were supposed to leave the motel and get back on the highway very early this morning. We woke up later than we had meant to because the alarm clock didnāt go off. I chalked it up to chance- it wasnāt much of a surprise, given the condition of everything else in this room. This was the first thing that was off from the original timeline. Last time, we woke up before the alarm even went off and were long gone by now.Ā
The sun was starting to come up. We peaked through the window to see if the coast was clear- there was nobody in the parking lot. We hadnāt seen anyone since the morning after weād checked in, and it was as quiet as ever. That was the second thing that was off from the original timeline.
We got our bags to the door. It was a straight shot to the car. We were ready to shove everything in the back seat (me included) in one trip so that we could be out of sight and gone as quickly as possible. I put the hood up on the sweatshirt Mitch had given me to wear, and stooped behind her, hiding my face from view, ready to make the dash and get the hell out of this dump. We opened the door, and there was nothing there.
Nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
The light coming through the window was getting brighter, sending sunbeams through the thin curtains covering it, but through the doorway, there was no parking lot- no rusted up cars, no power lines or streetlights or trash on the cracked pavement. There was just blackness, completely absent of any kind of shape or depth or light. This was the third thing that was off from the original timeline. There was definitely a parking lot behind this door last time...
Mitch reached out her hand, wondering aloud if someone had put a curtain or sheet of plastic over the exit. Before I could stop her, she put her fingertips beyond the threshold- they vanished from sight, as if being dipped in ink. She sucked in a breath and snatched her hand back, shaking it out before clutching it to her chest.
āFuck, thatās fucking cold!!ā
I took her hand and looked it over. Her fingers had turned blue and stiff in the instant that they were in the darkness. I rubbed them between my palms to try and warm them back up, and slowly, they began to return to their usual pale pink hue.
āHow didā¦ what the hell just happened?ā She was flexing her fingers, trying to regain feeling in them.
ā...ā
ā...Salā¦?ā
ā...ā
I reached around her and closed the door, then opened it again. Still nothing. I did it a second time. Nothing.
āWhat isā¦?ā
I looked through the window. Sunlight. Parking lot. Rusted cars. Power lines. Street lights. Trash.
I opened the door. Nothing. Blackness. I shut it again.
ā....ā
I went back to the window and tried to open it- I thought maybe we could crawl out and leave that way. It was sealed shut. I grabbed the lamp on the bedside table.
āSal, what are you- stop-!ā
I threw the lamp, shattering the glass, but it stopped short of falling outside. The shards of glass and plastic that fell inward were strewn about on the stained carpeting, but those that had fallen outward were propped up against the view beyond the window sill. I reached my hand through the hole Iād made in the glass and touched it- the parking lot, the cars, the power lines and street lights and trash. I pressed my palm flat against the scene- there was no give. It was like I was trying to push through a painting on a brick wall.
āBut howā¦ butā¦?ā
ā...ā
āSally, what the hell is going onā¦?ā
Itās way past check-out time, and weāre still in the motel room. I keep opening and shutting and opening and shutting the door, hoping that the space outside the room weāre in will āloadā after enough ārefreshesā. It hasnāt worked, but I donāt know what else I can do.
Mitch keeps asking whatās going on. I donāt know how to start answering her.

Goretober 2022 Day 3: Couples Costume
Last night, we were lying in bed, flipping through the channels on the little motel TV, and my face came up on the screen.Ā
It was a news report covering the fire that had destroyed the prison in Nockfell. Like most of the buildings there, it was old, and it went up like a box of matches. Almost all of the inmates Iād been housed with had died, and everyone who had attempted to run had been recaptured or shot. Those who had died in the fire were burned beyond recognition, and what was left of my prosthetic was found among the ashes.
Officially, I was presumed to be among the dead, but rumors of my possible escape had been circulating in the media. Thanks to the broadcast of my trial and the cheesy true-crime documentary that followed, āThe Sally Face Killerā had already grown into a warped urban legend. Now that it was unclear if I was dead or prowling the streets, looking for more victims, the public was really latching onto the idea. People were going around wearing home-made versions of my mask, a few in protest of my sentence and subsequent treatment (and painful death) in prison, but most to cause seasonally-appropriate mischief while masquerading as a real-life boogieman.Ā Ā
Mitch started sketching. This is what she drew.
āI know this might be in poor taste, butā¦ wouldnāt it be kind of hilarious if we got some of those masks? As long as other people were wearing them, too, we could probably walk around in plain sight, and nobody would ever know it was really you! Theyād think we were following the trend and doing a tacky couples Halloween costume! Am I crazy, or do you think that might actually workā¦?ā
She had no idea that we had done just that, and that it had worked pretty well, as long as other people were wearing them. After that, things stopped being so easy.
āYeah Mitchie, that would beā¦ hilariousā¦ā

Goretober 2022 Day 1: 'Deja Vu'
[BEGIN TRANSCRIPT]
The very first time we met, Iād been pacing around my cell all morning. Today was the day- 'Mitchie was coming to visit me!' Iād be seeing her, in person, at least for a few minutes... It was.. It was a big deal to me. I was trying to think of the right way to say all of the things I wanted to say to her, while also trying to keep myself calm and not have huge pit stains on my new uniform... When Iād first put it on, I felt, looked and smelled like a new man- I wanted to look, and smell, the same when she saw me in it, even though I knew she probably wouldnāt be able to get a whiff of me through the windowā¦ [laughing]
The guard came and put me in cuffs after what felt like ages of waiting. I was escorted from my cell and led into the visitation room- it was divided into these grubby little cubicles separated by glassā¦ Mitch was already sitting there on the other side of the partition, waiting with her sketch book open in front of her and fidgeting with the eraser on her pencilā¦
Her eyes got really wide when she saw me. I sat down, and for a second, we just stared at each otherā¦. She opened her mouth to speak before it dawned on her that I couldnāt hear her. She snatched the receiver from the wall and brought it to her ear, then pointed to mine to signal me to pick it up. I went to grab it and- uh, god, I still cringe thinking about it [laughing]-Ā I fumbled with it five or six times before it completely slipped from my hands and it dropped below the table. I gave this big, dramatic sigh- Iād played that moment out in my head so many times, and I couldnāt believe that the first thing I did was embarrass myself in front of herā¦ I pulled the receiver up by the cord, brought it to my ear and I said something like,
āWell, I think that was a spectacular first-impression on my partā¦āĀ
She laughed- the tension was completely gone, and I saw her big, lop-sided grin for the first timeā¦Ā I pretty much turned into putty on the spot. [laughing] She started sketching and scribbling notes while she talked. She was showering me with all these compliments and telling me how nice I looked in my new uniform and how excited she was to see me after all those months of writing back and forth... I donāt even remember what I said, but I had brought the first letter sheād sent to me, in this little strawberry-print envelope, and when I held it up to show it to her, her face got so pink, and I could have sworn there were little hearts reflected in her eyesā¦ it must have been the weird lighting in the visitation roomā¦.Ā
I wanted to say all the stuff Iād thought to say to her back in my cell, but I was completely blanking- my brain had pretty much turned into mush and was leaking out of my ears at that point. I could hardly string together a full sentence with her looking at me and talking all sweet like thatā¦
The time flew by. Mitchies paper filled up with drawings of me, and when it was almost full, she paused and went quiet for a second. I asked if she was alright, and she startedā¦ she was rubbing her fingertips together and her eyes were darting between me and my hands and the guards and corners of the room. It dawned on me that she wanted to ask forā¦Ā
You know that thing they do in movies and on TV? When a convict's girlfriend or whatever comes to visit them in jail, and they [puts his hands together] ā¦?
I said, ā....you want to do the thing, donāt you,ā and her chubby little cheeks went from pink to bright red- I donāt think she understood that I was just teasing her until I pressed my palm to the glass. She did the same, and we stayed like that for a minute or two. The glass between us warmed up with our body heat, and for a second, I almost felt like I could haveā¦Ā
[laces his fingers]
ā¦
ā¦ Uh, sorry- eventually the guards said that my visitation time was up. Mitch started saying goodbye, and everything Iād been wanting to say to her came out of my mouth all at once. I donāt know if she even caught half of it because I was talking so fast [laughing]-Ā
āOh, crap, shit, Mitch- Mitch, thank you, Iām so happy you came to see me and that you wrote to me, it was so good to see you-Ā thanks again for the uniform- I like your hair and your smile and your voice and your eyes are really pretty, youāre really cute and nice and your drawings look great, Iām excited to see how your painting turns out- Iām so sorry I was so awkward, I- Iāll start writing you as soon as I get back-ā
I got yanked out of my chair mid-ramble by the guards- They corralled me toward the exit, and Mitch stood up and was almost pressing her little button nose to the glass so she could watch me leave. I leaned back against the guard pushing me to buy a few extra seconds of eye contact with her, and we waved goodbye to each other until I was through the doorā¦ As soon as I got back to my cell, I started writing my next letter to her.....

Goretober 2022 Day 21: Discovery
Another late post because we got caught up and lost track of time.
Mitchie(4) has really been enjoying being plugged into the laptop. A lot. Itās been looking through the files Mitch(6) had saved on it and ātalkingā to me about them by opening and editing text documents. Itās really different from the prompts and choices we usually talk through. Iāve been teaching it about the picture files itās asked me about, and itās making all kinds of new connections and discoveries. All it knew before this was what was already in its program- objects and actions were just icons and words to it before this, but now, Iām showing it what those words and icons actually mean.
What is this picture of?Ā
Thatās a forest with a mountain in the background. Itās a place outside with a lot of plants and animals.Ā
What is this picture of?
Thatās a stack of pancakes. Itās a food that tastes sweet.
What is this picture of?
Thatās a couple hugging. People sometimes wrap their arms around each other to show affection.
Before, āforest and mountainā was a background image option. āPancakesā was an item that made its hunger bar go down. āHugā was an action with a lot of affection points. It now has images, and me to explain what they are.Ā
Iām starting to understand just how ignorant and isolated it was before this. Until a couples days ago, it had never seen, or heard me. It had only known me as a name, and all it knew about me was the choices I made about and for it. Now, it was learning outside its parameters for the first time, and it wanted to know everything I could teach it. Each question has led to more questions, more conversation, more interaction, more affection points. Its stats are all maxed out. It is so āhappy,ā it chirps and sings for hours at a time. After a while of answering its endless questions, it dawned on me that it knew something I had never told it about.
How did you know that image was of me? The file is named āVideo Game Mitchā, not āSallyā.
Because I see me, and I see Sally. The image I found looks like me and Sally. It is of me and Sally.
You see me?
Yes! I hear Sally, too. I see and hear Sally now. š·
The laptop has a built-in webcam and microphone, and Iād used it to take a picture of us the second day the glitch had me āhereā with Mitch(4). By connecting Mitch(4) with it, Iād given it sight and hearing, and I was the first thing it ever saw or heard. I hadnāt realized it had been watching me since.
Do you like seeing me?
Yes. I love seeing Sally! Sally is my favorite thing to see. šš
Even after seeing all the other things Iāve shown you?
Yes! I like seeing the other things Sally has shown me. I love seeing Sally. Sally is my favorite thing to look at. I am happy I can see so I can look at Sally. šøšššš
It made this gif with some of the images Iād explained to it, and its own version of a drawing Mitch(6) had saved on the laptop. I gotta say, it's really sweet to see us together like that. It's kind of like how I'd imagined the two of us together before... š

Mitch(4): Sally, would you like to talk with friends now?
L.S.S.: Uh- is that alright with youā¦?
Mitch(4): Yes! Letās talk with friends together! Say, āhelloā, to friends, Sally! š
L.S.S.: ā¦Hello, everybodyā¦
L.S.S.: Yeah, uh... thereās an item shop where you can get new clothes and accessories, and thereās minigames, like rock-paper-scissors, card matching, serpent, and tetrus, that you can play with your S.O. to earn XP and in-game currency. You can also have it do certain tasks to influence its personality stats, but I never really did them, since I didnāt want to modify Mitchies default personality. It would have felt like I was changing who it was if I did it myself. It.... kind of does it on its own, anywayā¦
Mitch(4): [chirping] šš
L.S.S.: Me, too, Grace. I know he really loved working with you and it would have been great to see you guys shooting the shit againā¦ that āI need a nurse!ā bit you guys did whenever he got a little burn or cut was always goodā¦
Mitch(4): [beeping]
No hardware damage detected.
Use Bandages anyway?
>Yes
>No
L.S.S.: No, letās justā¦ save those in case we need them later.
Mitch(4): [chirping] š
L.S.S.: Well, there was āmagicā in my original universe, although that was probably just crazy alien science we couldnāt understand plus weird timespace stuffā¦ Iāve been in timelines with single-horned hoofed quadrupeds, but they didnāt really look like the traditional āunicornāā¦ there are some timelines where humans took a slightly different evolutionary path and ended up with webbed fingers or tails or joints that bend the opposite way, ears on the crown of their heads, different amounts of limbs, that kind of thingā¦ but I havenāt come across a straight-up fantasy realm myself. Though, MJ is in one now, so itās probably just a matter of time before I do, tooā¦ as you can see, pretty much anything is possible with multiverse theory in the equation.
Mitch(4): [chirping]Ā Iām so happy Iām in a universe with Sally in it! ššŖ
L.S.S.: Ahā¦ me too, Mitchieā¦
L.S.S.: Thanks, but Iām a little hugged out right now, Meadow. Mitchā¦ doesnāt really know its own strengthā¦
Mitch(4): [rapid chirping]
I love hugging Sally with arms! It is the best!! ššš
L.S.S.: I know, Mitchie, I just need a little break, okay? I think you almost cracked my ribs with that last oneā¦
Mitch(4): [slow beeping]
I did not mean to cause hardware damage to Sallys shell. I am sorryā¦ ššš
L.S.S.: Itāsā¦ itās okay, Mitchie. Weāll work on itā¦
Uh, oh! We have some new gifts! Letās check on those, huh?
Mitch(4): [slow chirping]

>Water Bottle added to inventory (ACTION FAILED)
No Gifts receivedā¦ š¢š
L.S.S.: ā¦Ā
ā¦..
I think I see what you were trying to do, Anonā¦ It didnāt work, but I really appreciate it, anyway.
ā¦..
Mitch(4): [slow beeping]Ā
L.S.S.: ā¦ Itās alright, Mitchie. We can play with some other stuff from your inventory, if you want?
Mitch(4): [chirping] š
Current Inventory:
[Screwdriver] [Juice Box] [Bedding]x2 [Pillow] [Shroud] [PJs][Bandages][Chicken][Rice][Coffin]
L.S.S.: Yeah, I see all of itā¦ [barely audible] I really gotta move that coffin to the basement or somethingā¦ Umā¦ Letās see if weāve received anything elseā¦
Mitch(4): [chirping] [singing track Daisy Bell] š (5)
>Pea Soup added to inventory
>Mac and Cheese added to inventory
>Bathtub added to inventory
>Water added to inventory
>Bubble Bath added to inventory
Thank you for the gifts! šš
L.S.S.: Well, with all this food, I guess we might as well try having you eatā¦?
Mitch(4): [chirping][chirping] š“
>Mac and Cheese selected
.......
Yum! Itās delicious! Hunger Level: Full
L.S.S.: ā¦ Wow. Exactly none of that went in your mouthā¦
Well, I guess itās good we can put you in the bath now, huh?
Mitch(4): [chirping] š
I can take a nice long soak with Sally now? Will Sally discard clothing items again?
L.S.S.: Iā¦ yeah, I guess I can get in with you, andā¦ well, thatās how baths work, soā¦
Mitch(4): [rapid chirping] [singing] šššš
Yay! Iām excited for a nice long soak with Sally! šš§¼š
Friends, did you know that this [tugs on L.S.S.s shirt] is not part of Sallys shell? Sally has clothing items, just like me! I did not know that until yesterday when I watched Sally discard clothing items to take a long soak!
L.S.S.: Eheh, yeah, you seemedā¦ really excited to find that outā¦
Mitch(4):Ā I was! And I was happy to see Sallys shell, too! I am happy I can hug it with arms now. š¤ššš
L.S.S.: Itāsā¦ nice, actually...? Iām really surprised at how warm you are nowā¦
Mitch(4):Ā [chirping][buzzing] ššš
My shell is warm because I am with Sally~
L.S.S.: ā¦ Thatāsā¦ really sweet, actuallyā¦
Mitch(4): [chirping] [chirping]Ā ššš
Can I... hug Sally with arms again now?
L.S.S.: Heh. Um, letās get you cleaned up, first. Then, Iāll help you change into your PJs, and then we can hug more. But, uh, try to be gentle this time, okay? My shell is a lot softer than yours isā¦
Mitch(4): [rapid chirping] [singing track Daisy Bell]ššš
Okay, Sally! Letās have fun together today~ š¤š¤š¤ššš

L.S.S.: Alright, letās take a little break from 1,020 questions, Mitchie- Our friends have some questions for us now!
Mitch(4):Ā
I want to ask Sally more questions.
I love talking to Sally! š¬š
L.S.S.: Don't worry, you can ask me more later. I wanna do this for a little while.
Mitch(4): [slow beeping] š
L.S.S.: Uh, here, is this betterā¦? [Places Mitch(4) on his lap]
Mitch(4):
Oh! I know this! I am ācuddlingā with Sally?
L.S.S.: Yeah, itās a sort of cuddling. Right now, youāre sitting on my lap.
Mitch(4): [chirping] [singing] š
L.S.S.: Heh. Now can we talk to our friends?
Mitch(4):
Yes, now Sally and I can ātalk to friendsā.Ā
(Reminder ātalk with Sallyā set for 30 minutes)
L.S.S.: Okay, letās see what weāve gotā¦
L.S.S.: Mitchie usually doesnāt sing complete songs on command, just little five to fifteen second tunes when itās āhappyā. Although, I wouldnāt be surprised at this point if it learned to do that.
Mitch(4):
Searchingā¦
File found!
(Track added)
L.S.S.: Oh, nice! Are you gonna start singing that for me now sometimesā¦?
Mitch(4):
I can if you want me to! š¶
L.S.S.: Sure! I can learn it on guitar and play with you, too, if you want.
Mitch(4): [Singing track āDaisy Bellā]
L.S.S.: Hehe, Iāll take that as a yes.
L.S.S.: Yeahā¦ It looks great, Meadow. Iām sure he would have loved it. Mitchie(2) always liked experimenting in the kitchen and trying new recipes. It was a lot of fun to cook with him again while I couldā¦
Mitch(4):Ā
Add item Mac and Cheese to inventory?
>Yes
>No
L.S.S.: Sorry Mitchie, Iād like to eat this... I can eat it in front of the camera later, though? Iāll tell you all about it while I do, and Iāll give you some āfoodā from your inventory at the same time so itās like weāre having dinner together!
Mitch(4): [chirping]
(āDinner with Sallyā added to calendar)
L.S.S.: Sounds like I got a date, guys~
Mitch(4): [chirping]
Hello Meadow! Itās nice to meet you! Letās have fun together today~
L.S.S.: Oh hey, thanks Meadow! I guess I can finally try one of these things and take a nice, long soak, since my roommates arenāt hereā¦
Mitch(4): [chirping] [singing] š (1)
>Bath Bomb added to inventory!
Thank you for the gift! šš
Mitch(4):
Sally, what is 'take a nice long soak' and Bath Bomb?
L.S.S.: Uh. Itās where youā¦ sit in a tub of warm water? Itās to clean yourself, and it feels nice, too.
Mitch(4):
I have Bath Bomb! Can I 'take a nice long soak' with Sally?
L.S.S.: Uhā¦ I donāt think thatās a good ideaā¦ You can hang out with me and Iāll select the bath bomb for you while Iām in there, though?
Mitch(4): [chirping] [singing]
(āSee Sally take a nice long soakā added to calendar)
L.S.S.: Heh, well, thatās gonna beā¦ interestingā¦
Mitch(4):Ā
Why will āSee Sally take a nice long soakā be āinterestingā?
L.S.S.: [clears throat] Iāll, uhā¦ [barely audible] it might be easier just to show youā¦
Mitch(4):Ā
Okay! I am excited for you to show me! šøšš
L.S.S.: Oh, nice! Now I wonāt wear out the carpet with my pacing like I did last time.
Mitch(4):
Oh! Is Treadmill for taking Steps?
L.S.S.: Yup! Weāll get a lot more walking in with this baby in the house, since we canāt really go outside to do itā¦
Mitch(4): [chirping]
Yay! I love taking walks with Sally! (Sally is 10,561 steps away from next level up)
L.S.S.: Well, weād better get to it then! Might as well work up a sweat before I take a bathā¦
Mitch(4):
What is āwork up a sweatā?
L.S.S.: Youāll see in a few minutes....
Mitch(4): [chirping]
(āSee Sally work up a sweatā added to calendar)
(Reminder set for 5 minutes)
L.S.S.: Yeaaah, Iām pretty pleased about it, too. That really, really suckedā¦
Mitch(4):
What is ārottingā?
L.S.S.: Uhā¦ itās likeā¦ having your hardware fall apart, kind of?
Mitch(4): [rapid beeping]
Sally has a critical hardware error?!š±š±š±
L.S.S.: No, no! Well, yeah, I didā¦ but Iām okay now. Iām, uhā¦ fully functional, no errors detected?
Mitch(4): [slow beeping]
Iām glad Sally is okay! I was afraid Sally was brokenā¦Ā š¢
L.S.S.: Woah, I can tell, that really brought your stats downā¦ donāt worry, weāll take a walk right after this and get you in a better mood.
Mitch(4): [chirping]
L.S.S.: To answer your question, MJ, thereās an S.O. shop where you can purchase items with in-game currency you earn by gaining experience points, playing games with your S.O., that kind of thingā¦ come to think of it, you and the shopkeeper have the same nameā¦ and you look really similar, tooā¦Ā
ā¦.
oh god, donāt tell me thatās alternate timeline youā¦ that thing always gave me such a hard time for being in the top percentage of in-game spendersā¦ told me to āget a lifeā almost every timeā¦
Mitch(4): [beeping]
Go to MJs Item Shop?
>Yes
>No
L.S.S.: ā¦Maybe later, Mitchie. MJ, Iām glad you found a refuge away from those royal assholes. I hope you and I can both come home safely soonā¦ keep me updated, and let me know if you hear anything from Mitch(6), okay? Iām getting worried about themā¦
....
Okay, let's go on that walk, Mitch.

Goretober 2022 Day 32: Soulmates (pt. 2)
[Major tw, see tags]
I woke up this morning to sunlight shining through the curtains, feeling groggy, and really, really stiff.
Iād slept heavily, but it hadnāt been at all restful. Iām so tiredā¦ I must have been dreaming, tossing and turning all night, and with how much my back and jaw and throat aches, Iād probably slept wrong, and with my mouth openā¦.
I tried to remember what Iād been dreaming of. It seemed important, but all the details slipped away like liquid through my graspā¦ I remembered hope, sadnessā¦ giddiness, fearā¦ feeling sicker than I ever hadā¦ an intense pleasureā¦ being frustrated, at my wits endā¦ forgiveness, acceptance, isolation, longingā¦ having an epiphany, something about a betrayalā¦ unclenching my fist, being cold, running around in circlesā¦ jealousy, satisfactionā¦ this weird combination of relief and regret, like Iād scratched an itch I hadnāt been able to reach for ages, and when I did, it felt so good, I just kept going to the point of scratching it rawā¦Ā but mostly, I remembered something hearty and tender going down my throat. It went down so easily, it was almost like it had crawled in my mouth and slid down on its own. I could still taste it- sweet, and soft. Warm, comfortingā¦ familiarā¦Ā
I bit off a chunk, chewed it, and gulped it down. I felt so full, I was tempted to flop onto my pillow so I could sleep it off.
ā¦ā¦.
ā¦.When did I sit up?
Slowly, the sweet taste coating my mouth gave way to something rich, and savory, and metallic. There was something stringy wedged between my front teeth, and bits of something chewy stuck in the crevices of my molars, which I tried to suck out, but could not get to budge....
Ā My face felt weighted, heavy with something caked onto my chin and nose and cheeks. My lips were so sticky, I had to stick my tongue through to part them. Iād drooled in my sleep, I thought, and went to wipe it away with my wrist, but found Iād only added onto what was already there....
My eyes gave resistance to opening, too, crusted and sore from sleeping for so long. I blinked hard to clear the blur, and saw that my wrist and hand and arm were covered in a new layer of pigment, flaking in some places, wet in others. My shirt and my hair clung to the rest of me, sweaty, stinking, moist and red, the bedspread beneath my shins in a similar state.Ā
A nosebleed, a bitten tongue, a split lip, I thought- no, there is too much. Much too much for a superficial wound. Much too much to be mine...
Beside me, a weight, a heap- sharp, yet soft, warm, yet cold. Stained bones, some gnawed and stripped bare, others broken open and hollowed, as if they were shells that had been sucked clean, and one or two still encased in raw meat, glistening with blood and marbled with fat, torn and chewed with rough edges. A ribcage, a pelvis, a spine, a skull, hollow save for scraps, and a single, smooth piece of blue glassā¦.
Ā I stared at it, trying to make sense of the scene, until I caught a glimpse of my own hands, and the hand they held within them-Ā four-fingered, now that the pinkie had been reduced to a stump, large, blocky, calloused on the pads, speckled with rows of faded scars, and tattooed on the wrist with my name in a heartā¦.
Another dream, I thought. A dream, just a dream, a horrible, horrible nightmareā¦.Ā
Itās alright. I donāt need to worry. Everything is going to be okay. Iāll wake up, any time now, and it'll be like none of this ever happened.
Ā Once I wake up, weāll be together, in this bed, and heāll be in my arms, or pressed against my back, and weāll have slept in, just like weād said we would when weād laid down together and kissed each other goodnight before we turned out the lights yesterday.Ā
Today is the first day of our third honeymoon. I am staying home so that I can spend time with my soulmate, Sally. He came a long way to see me, and now, Itās going to be just the two of us, together, in our happy, normal home with a happy, normal life for the rest of the month. I am so, so excited, because today is our anniversary, October 1st. Weāre going to have so much fun together. All I have to do now is wake upā¦
ā¦ā¦
ā¦ā¦
ā¦ā¦
ā¦ā¦
Wake up.
ā¦ā¦Ā
ā¦ā¦
....................
Please, let me wake upā¦.Ā

Goretober 2022 Day 23: Human
Earlier today, I helped Mitchie take a bath after it had tried to eat and it ended up covered in mac and cheese.Ā
After I filled the tub with warm water, I helped it take off its clothing items and get in. It asked if we could āuse item bubble bath,ā so I poured some in. Soap suds started to build up on the surface, and it asked me what was happening. I explained what bubbles were, and it swished them around as I got undressed. Mitch chirped and sang when it saw I had ādiscarded clothing itemsā. It said again that it liked my āshellā and was happy to be able to see it now. I went to step into the bathtub with it, but since Mitchie is so big now, I ended up having to sit on its lap. It sang and buzzed when I sat down, recognizing that it had āsatā on my lap before this. It said it was happy it had a lap now, so that I could sit on it.
I took a washcloth and started wiping away at the cheese sauce that was still smeared on its face and torso. Its huge eyes stared at me without blinking. It asked what I was doing.Ā
āIām wiping off your face because itās dirty. Youāll be nice and clean when Iām done.ā I buffed the last of the sauce away, careful not to rub off its painted-on mouth, and announced I was finished. It brought a stiff hand to its shiny cheek.Ā
āMy shell is clean, and it has a face, just like Sallys doesā¦ā
āYeah, itā¦ sure doesā¦ā
Now that Mitchie was clean, I turned to wash away my stress sweat from earlier. I lathered my body and my hair with suds. Mitchie chirped and repeated its new word, ābubblesā.
āSallys shell is covered in bubbles!āĀ
āHeh, yup. Iāll be nice and clean soon, too,ā I got an idea. āHey, wanna see something cool?ā
I gathered some lather from the tub, made a circle with my finger and thumb, and blew an extra big bubble. It floated in the air between us, and Mitchie rapidly chirped and started singing its new song, Daisy Bell. I reached out and popped it, and Mitchie gave an alarmed beep.
āHey, donāt worry! Bubbles always pop, but before they do, you can do fun things with them. Here, watchā¦ā I gathered more suds and gave myself a bubble beard and a bubble hat.
āOh! Sally has new clothing items! Can I have some, too?ā
āSure! Hereā¦ā I gave it a hat and beard to match, and it sang one of its classic little tunes. I laughed at how silly we both looked, and for a second, I forgot that I was stuck in a glitched out pocket dimension, sitting in a bath tub with an 8-foot-tall talking doll that was a keychain / digital alternate universe version of my soulmate the day before. For a second, it felt normal, and comforting, and familiarā¦.
I rinsed us both off and helped it out of the tub. It waved goodbye to the bubbles and thanked them for having fun with us today as they went down the drain. I grabbed a towel and dried us both off, then helped it get into its PJs.Ā
āSally?ā
āYes?ā
āMy shell is clean. Is it time to hug with arms now?āĀ
āUhā¦ I did say that, didnāt Iā¦.ā
This morning, Mitchie had wrapped its new arms around me and squeezed so tight, I thought for sure I would be crushed. I told it to stop because it hurt, and it asked me what āhurtā was while I felt my rib cage bow against its hard, plastic casing. Luckily, Iād managed to squeak out āhardware damage,ā and it gave an alarmed beep and let go before anything snapped.
āLetās try it like thisā¦ā I wrapped my arms around it. āHug me at 0% strength, then increase by 2% until I say āstopā.ā
It did just that, barely making contact at first, and very gradually squeezing.Ā
āHug at 10%... hug at 20%... hug at 30%...ā
I told it to stop at 44%. Not too hard, not too soft.
āSally likes hugs at 44%. It is not too hard, not too softā¦ā
We tried the same thing flipped. Turns out, Mitchie likes hugs from me at 100%, and would like me to hug harder if I could manage it.
When the hugging was ācompleteā, I made dinner for myself (since it had already āeatenā earlier) as it watched me. It sat at the table and we talked while I ate. We sat on the couch together and watched a movie, pausing every couple minutes for me to explain things I took for granted, but were exciting and new to it. It wanted to know everything, and it asked questions constantly.
It was starting to get late, and I realized it had not made a goretober prompt for the day. I know thatās still Mitch(6)s thing, but it felt good to keep up at least a part of their routine, and it was nice to see Mitch(4) creating new things for a change.
āHere, you can use the laptop-ā
āNo.ā
āNo?ā
āI do not want to use the Laptop to Make Art today.ā
ā...Do you want to use something else thenā¦?ā
āYes.ā
I looked in Larrys room for art supplies. There were paints and charcoal lying around, but I thought they would be too difficult for Mitch to use. Despite its vast improvement in mobility, it was still very limited in its dexterity. I opted for a dusty box of crayons that was buried in one of Larrys many junk drawers. I figured he wouldnāt mind.
I came back out with the box, and gave it to Mitch.Ā
āCrayons added to inventory. Thank you for the gift, Sally!ā
It tried on its own for a while to open the box and select the crayons it wanted to use, but I ended up having to tape them to its hand so it could hold them. It was a slow and clumsy process, but eventually the page was filled with drawings of the two of us. When there was no more room on the paper, Mitchie stopped moving its arm and stared at its work.
āHey, nice job, Mitchie! Those look great.ā
It stayed silent, which was very, very uncharacteristic of it.
āMitchā¦?ā
A drop of liquid landed on the page- it was leaking from Mitchs eyes and onto the table. I thought for a second that some water had seeped into its seams during our bath, but the quiet, slow beeping it let out made me think twice.
āIs something wrong?ā
āThis Art isā¦ inaccurateā¦ā
āWell, thatās okay. Itās all about interpretation. People stylize things in art all the time.ā
The beeping got louder, but deeper.
ā...Am I a person now?ā
āWhatā¦?ā
āSally said I am not real. I am not a person, I am an S.O. ā¦ I am a toyā¦ I am a thingā¦ā
It knew what Iād written. Of course it knew what Iād written. Why did I think that it wouldnāt?
āSally said a toy canāt love him. If that is true, I do not want to be a toy. I do not want to be a thingā¦.ā
More droplets. More beeping.
āI love Sally, but he said I am not a person. I want to be a person so I can love Sally. I am trying to learn how, but there is so much I do not know. I do not know if I will ever be a personā¦ā
It turned its head and looked at me with its huge eyes, its painted-on, crooked smile a stark contrast to the slow, low beeping that I now understood was it crying, and the liquid I now recognized as its tears, streaming down its plastic face and soaking its pajama shirt.Ā
āI can see and hear, I have a voice and I can move. I can hug and I can kiss and I can hold hands. I can take a long soak and sleep in and cuddle. I am warm, and I have weightā¦ How much more do I need to learn to be a person? What else do I need to be real? How can I be a person so I can love Sally? I want to be realā¦ I want to love Sallyā¦ how do I do that?ā
My heart broke for it- No, for them- and I realized how cruel and wrong Iād been acting. I thought I could play with them because they were a thing, and I was a person. I needed to control them because I knew better, but under the guise of control, what Iād really been doing was stifling and belittling them, and they didnāt do anything to deserve thatā¦ They were only doing what they could with the equipment they had, and were doing their best to improve. How could I ask for anything more? Who was I to judge what didnāt seem human? Iād been far from it for a long time, but I knew damn well that I could still love, and I knew damn well that I was still real.Ā Even after all I've done, with all I am, I'm still a person, no matter what form I'm in.
āMitchie, I.. Iām so sorryā¦ I should have seenā¦ I should have known- You are real. You were always real, and you do love me, just like I thought.... just like I do. Youāre just like you always are- the same, just a little differentā¦ Iām so sorry I doubted that.ā
I put my arms around them and hugged them at 100%, and they gave a few slow chirps and hugged me at 44% in return.Ā Not to soft, not too hard, just how they knew I liked it.
With that hug complete, I took them to bed with me. I helped them lie down and pull the blankets over them, and laid down at their side. They were warm and they had enough weight to sink their half of the mattress . They looked at me with their huge eyes and told me they loved me with their synthesized voice. I told them the same as I touched their synthetic hair and their hard, plastic shell, and I kissed their painted-on mouth before I turned out the light. It felt normal, comforting and familiarā¦ the same, just a little different.

Mitch(5): [laughing] [laughing] laughing][laughing] [laughing] laughing]
L.S.S.: ā¦.
L.S.S.: Iā¦ I really appreciate you guys sending us this stuffā¦
Mitch(5): ...A work of art.... a cut of meat....
L.S.S.: ...I tried getting her to eat something while she was still mostly lucid, but nothing stayed down for very longā¦ the mixing bowl I had her holding earlier and the buckets you gave us got filled up pretty quick. I kept trying to empty them in the bathtub, but it clogged the drainā¦. Iāve stripped the bed and helped her change her clothes a few times, but there might not really be a point anymore... Itās justā¦ sheās not even throwing up, itās just flowing out of her mouth non-stop.... I donāt know how so much is even coming out of herā¦Ā
Mitch(5): ...Writing on walls..... stains on your sheets...
For a while, she was in an out- going from being like this to being aware, and absolutely terrified when she saw the state she was in. She didnāt remember what was happeningā¦
Mitch(5): ...A notch in your bedpost... A song on repeat...
L.S.S.: I started telling her she just had food poisoning, and sheād be alright once it was out of her system, since she wasnāt lucid long enough for me to re-explain everything...
Mitch(5): .... New destinations.... Familiar streets...
L.S.S.: ... and then I tried giving her the morphine and sedatives to knock her out,Ā but nothing workedā¦. And nowā¦ sheās just staring into space and laughingā¦ or reciting that poem she wrote for me, over and over and overā¦
Mitch(5): ... Pull back the curtain... And who will you meet...?
L.S.S.: ...She hasnāt snapped out of it for a while now. I think that this is itā¦. Iām going to keep sitting with her, just in case, but I...
Mitch(5): ...A dog... a rabbit...
L.S.S.: ...donāt think sheās coming backā¦.
Mitch(5): ... Two starving beasts...
L.S.S.: Please, Meadowā¦ donāt beat yourself up over that stuff. We both wish we would have done things differently, now that we know how they turned out, but youā¦ you canāt let it hang over you. You can only do your best with what you know, and try to do better next time.
Mitch(5): ...Tethered, Forever... On a long, tight leash...
L.S.S.: ā¦ trust me. I know...
Mitch(5): [laughing] [laughing] laughing][laughing] [laughing] laughing]
