@heartofstanding tagged me in this meme months ago and unfortunately it took me this long to get to it because I had a mild crisis over how long it's been since I've read a novel, let alone one that I loved 😅 so this is nine of my favourite novels (not books, because if I included manga/short stories/comics/etc this would be giant)

#TPODG I feel like is obvious. But a genuinely hilarious book that is also poignant and tragic and so /so/ compelling #The more work you put into it the more you get out of it and I get so sad every time I see people #not wanting to look deeper than what's beyond the surface #Pyrrhus gets the extremely high honour of Greek Myth Retelling That is Actually Good #it's less about the Trojan War and more about the journey there set in the 1980s gay scene #the cursed spot that gets Philoctetes abandoned is an effective allegory right until the moment it isn't an allegory at all #and you should see the gut punch coming but somehow you don't #The Scarecrow is my Token Kiwi Representation and it's also the one that got me into the genre I now write almost exclusively #reading it feels like watching a cheesy low budget slasher that accidentally says some really interesting things about sexism and misogyny #(I say accidentally because it is the 20s and my tutor very loudly hated this book for being sexist)#(and I both totally agree and disagree because Prue is the prototypical final girl and needs an adaptation that does her justice)#Also the story of this novel's publication is freaking hilarious and why I will only write under a pseudonym because I would be next #Unnatural History is an exact blueprint of what I love about sci-fi done well in the way we've only very recently started to see on screen #and I hate that the show of Doctor Who rarely if ever reaches this level #Tunnels of Blood is my favourite of the Darren Shan Saga but really is just a stand in for the entire series #yes it's a kids series but it's a kid series that got me into horror and surrealism #and delivers the most effective and heartbreaking plot twist that not even Hannibal pulled off as well #The Coffin Dancer is just some damn good crime fiction and I wish Jeffery Deaver wasn't so slept on #(yes I know The Bone Collector got an adaptation but The Bone Collector isn't even in the top ten of the Lincoln Rhyme series)#unfortunately Deaver's strongest point is his use of point of view #but he still manages to get the twist to be shocking (and Coffin Dancer is the best example of it) in a way that other media fails at #Hero is about a gay disabled teen with superpowers and somehow tumblr does not know about it #It is such a fun riff on superheroes while also being genuinely sweet and touching and sad #It was meant to get a tv show but the writer passed so it got stuck in production hell :(#Frankenstein is Frankenstein. It's just good on like every level. Victor is my problematic fave. I will take no criticism.#I am however on my knees hoping the Guillermo Del Toro adaptation finally gets it right #one flew over the cuckoo's nest means so much to me but no one ever talks about it beyond the Ratched and Mcmurphy stuff #who are the least interesting characters to me. And I find the debate about the sexism ignores that the novel is about the structural abuse #of the mentally ill

another interesting choice i think in the novel is that miral tells b'elanna a lot about qo'nos- the history and the stories about kahless and the culturally relevant things- but when they actually go to qo'nos, b'elanna isn't trained like the other kids- as in she's not doing the martial arts, preparing for the rite of ascension etc and i wonder if that's a concession on miral's part because clearly it makes b'elanna uncomfortable (though i feel like the novel makes it clear that b'elanna hates not fitting in no matter where it is- she doesn't want to do klingon stuff on kessik, and when they get to qo'nos she's embarrassed that she hasn't done any warrior training) or if miral hadn't thought it would be necessary for her since she clearly knows she doesn't want to go back to qo'nos permanently. anyway all this to say that miral seems a little more uh easygoing about klingon tradition in some ways than b'elanna's perspective makes it seem

#diary #clearly klingon kids start training really young because b'elanna's like 8 in that scene #but in this novel her father left when she was 5 so it may just be a concession #either way its sweet kind of because that kind of thing- it doesn't seem like something you bend on with your kids. softie miral #also theres a very sweet mention of a scene in the novel where b'elanna distantly remembers miral telling a story about a klingon hero #and johns holding her in his lap and they're both listening like. Awwwwww

Yes, I do!

My favorite vampire books are from Kresley Cole's Immortals After Dark series. Not all of the books are vampire books, but her vampire mythology is just... top notch. The vampires (who are almost all male thanks to a virus wiping out most of the females years ago) are either born or (much less commonly) turned. Either way, if they're born when they hit their prime, or if they're turned right at the turning, their hearts stop. Which means instant erectile dysfunction for the male vamps lol. But when they meet their "Bride" (a gender neutral term) their heart immediately starts beating, blood flow begins again, and they have a HORRIBLE BONER until they come while touching their Bride. Then of course, they have a lot of "mine mine mine" feelings about it. It's calling being Blooded, and it's FANTASTIC.

Anyway, the vamp books in IAD are:

The Warlord Wants Forever--technically a novella but fairly lengthy for one, the first installment of the whole series. Estonian warlord who runs the armies of one side of this vampire war wants to be Blooded because it'll make him stronger. He meets a femme fatale valkyrie who Bloods him, but she's actually a vampire hunter and, though she nopes out of killing him because Feelings, she leaves him with said horrendous hard-on for FIVE. YEARS. until he finds her. And he's PISSED. TW for magical noncon; Myst has a chain that was put upon her by gods or something, and nobody is able to take it off until Nikolai is. You can command her to do anything when you hold the chain, and he does immediately use it to make her come. And come. I personally found it hot, but obviously it's not for everyone.

No Rest for the Wicked--another vampire/valkyrie book, Nikolai's tortured scholarly brother Sebastian has been hiding in a castle for centuries to avoid everyone (and avoid drinking human blood--Sebastian and his brother Conrad were turned forcibly and hate their existence). Kaderin the Coldhearted, a legendary valkyrie who's known for a) wearing vampire fangs on her belt and b) having no emotions comes in there to kill him, surprise she's his Bride, they have mutual orgasms but then she's like "Oh FUUUUUCK NO" and leaves to begin this magical scavenger hunt thing that will help her bring her sisters back from the dead, and Sebastian is like "but if I win scavenger hunt will she love me?" Includes a mile high club scene and bondage where heeee's tied up.

Dark Needs at Night's Edge--FABULOUS book, Conrad fled as soon as he was forcibly turned into a vampire because, unbeknownst to his brothers, he was a part of a monastic cult that dedicated itself to killing vampires??? Lmao??? And so for centuries he's been this CRAZY BANANAS vampire assassin (in IAD, vamps who drink human blood, unless it's from their Bride, go fucking insane because they harvest the memories of the humans and their minds get clouded). His brothers find him and take him to this New Orleans mansion to detox, basically, but he starts seeing this hot chick??? And he thinks he's crazy (he is) but it's actually a GHOST LADY. A slutty amazing GHOST LADY who I love so much. Only Conrad can see her, and they begin falling in love despite being incapable of touch. Also, Conrad is a virgin. Neomi is... decidedly not. A gorgeous book, one of my all time favorites.

Untouchable by Kresley Cole--another long-ass novella, this one is about the final Wroth brother (Nikolai, Sebastian, and Conrad being the others), The Sexy One, Murdoch. He is Blooded when he meets valkyrie Dani, but she's half ice fey so she literally can't touch anyone who is less cold than her (ie, anyone not ice fey, including vamps) without feeling immense pain and going into shock. So. Issue there. The book is a very straightforward "how can we make this work" love story. They do find their way around the skin to skin contact thing for a while. Humping each other through blankets help. As does... an icicle dildo.... EXCELLENT.

Lothaire--the biggest and baddest (in every sense of the word) vampire romance of them all. Lothaire is a villain throughout the series, he's 3,000 years old, he's incredibly smart, and he is a fucking nutball. Like, the lights are on, and someone is just darting in and out of the house, not really home, but not really un-present (mostly because he's spent 3,000 years murdering people and drinking all the blood). Lothaire is known for his "endgame", he's evil, he finds his Bride and she's some hillbilly human in Appalachia and is like "oh absolutely not"... But when it turns out that human girl, Ellie, is possessed by an evil goddess who intermittently takes control of her body and kills people, he's like "oh wait this makes sense". But Ellie is not ceding control of her body without a fight. It's this amazing battle of wills between a vampire who has been presented as the MOST dreaded throughout the series, and a 24-year-old psych major college dropout who notices that he is HARD. UP. and is like "oh, I can absolutely fuck my way out of this mess". He is horrible. Ellie is perfect. TW, Lothaire is an asshole like... all around. But the love story is top tier and the sex scenes are BEYOND. If you enjoy the "hero has existential post-nut crisis because he's never come harder than with this random girl" thing, this is it.

Shadow's Claim--this one has a slightly more high fantasy feel, even though it's still IAD? Trehan Daciano (Lothaire's cousin lmao) is a prince whose job it is to basically like, murder people. He meets this demon/sorceress princess, Bettina, and recognizes her as his Bride. Bettina thinks she's in love with her best friend, and she's like "uh no" but there's this huge competition, a fight for the death, being put on for her hand, and Trehan is like "good thing I'm actually amazing at killing people" and enters it, while also intermittently entering Bettina. Has the immortal scene where they're all supposed to give her a present and everyone is giving her like, gold, and phoenix feathers, and Trehan is like "oh FUCK all I got her was a BAG OF DECAPITATED HEADS!!!! WHAT DO I DO????"

Other than IAD lol....

I would recommend:

A Long Time Dead by Samara Breger--f/f vampire Victorian romance, one heroine is this sex worker who wakes up and finds she's been turned into a vampire, the other is this lady who's like "yeah sorry about that my ex turned you into a vampire to make a point to me". Then you get into this decades-spanning, Gothic love story that is so good. Also! They break out the strap, which I was pleasantly surprised to see in a Gothic Victorian vampire romance.

A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor by Kathryn Moon--k so this is a polyamorous romance, with the heroine essentially being a sex worker whose job it is to serve a unique clientele (monsters). She ends up falling in love with like... I don't know... five of them? And they're good with it. One of them is a French vampire who I think bakes pastries with her at one point. He's also bisexual, and though not all of the heroes are super into fucking with each other, he is, which leads to a very nice somnophilia type scene.

Blood Moon by Jillian Graves--a very steamy romcom between a witch and a vampire who own rival businesses. They hook up at the beginning, and then she gets PISSED because of the rivalry. Very hot, great fat rep from the heroine, lighthearted.

Kiss of Steel by Bec McMaster--just finished this, so fun and actually quite romantic? It's set in a pseudo-steampunk but not really Victorian England where there are all these monsters incorporated into society, including vampires (though there are like... different grades of vampire, I guess?). The heroine is impoverished, and basically makes a deal offering to give "lessons" to this kingpin vampire (although he doesn't actually call himself a vampire... he very much drinks blood lmao) she hates. He, of course, wants her to swear herself to him as his thrall. It's actually kind of touching? But also hot? Femoral artery blood is had. I also found the world super interesting.

NOT BAD ON A PLOT BEAT LEVEL EITHER!!!!#I definitely know I want to completely rework the opening but want to wait until I’ve written more #but also it’s just like im not used to this balance yet #of the grief but also the earnest silliness etc etc….it’s my own experience of grief but it takes getting used to #definitely hard to strike the balance from a writing pov #i have not been this consistent in a novel draft in a while but the last time I was the story was like. thematically + emotionally simpler #I think it definitely is a case of writing the first chapter closer to last but I’m gonna get thru the plot beats you know #also we’re deep in the tags so I’ll get mildly over sharing I need to be DONEEE with the bobby death flashback #I won’t detail what it looks like but it’s a scene that def takes from my experience of seeing someone dead and is very cathartic #VERY proud of what I’ve already written #but absolutely not a scene I can dwell on I need to be past it #chapter 2 in contrast has some super sweet Bobby flashbacks and I want to be there. I need healing #I don’t want to think about his dead body anymore :(#like it’s not triggering. but I need to be in the right frame of mind to write it #and the longer it takes me to get there the less I am in the right frame of mind bc I’m like anticipating it

just vividly remembered how murata loses his glasses in the novels one time when isekai'd and he and yuuri are separated for a long time but yuuri finds his glasses and then when they're finally reunited yuuri clumsily yet tenderly puts muratas glasses back on for him..........takabayashi was insane for that one

Man everytime I start thinking 'huh, maybe I can do NanoWrimo this year', I look at my Lucifer WIP and I feel utterly exhausted. :/

#oh outlining the second half is going great! I'm connecting all the dots #my draft: Oh my sweet summer child. Outlining is the easy part :)#me: *cries*#Literally how do people write long novels? How do they manage it without losing their minds?#Do they have coaches writing out their workouts for them each day and monitoring their heartrate and glucose levels #to tell them when to take rest and when it's time to do another interval workout?#Because I would really love the writing equivalent of a prorunner coach designing my schedule for me right now #Monday: Write scenes [x] and [y] with typing drills at the end to improve your speed.#Tuesday: Shake out with daydreams for 20 minutes and then marathon 5 TV episodes and write one page essays #about the implied characteristics of the protagonists displayed in each one.#No you don't get to daydream for longer. Do as coach says!#See? It would make life so much easier!!#Where's my physiological studies telling me when my brain needs to rest and when it needs to push through huh?#Writers need biology and data driven work schedules too! :(

there are a few aspects of h/l I don’t really like but they are absolutely, undeniably soulmates. they wouldn’t be happy with anyone else because they’re both freaks in the same way. insane chemistry. within literal minutes of meeting each other as adults they were vibing so hard they just decided to be best friends and their level of intimacy only went up from there

#I know I'm oversimplifying things but I simply thing h/l would be better if their book 2 backstory just didn't exist #but as it is they're absolutely perfect for each other in a way that I didn't really feel with novel wx #like by the end I thought wx was very sweet but I don't think anyone can beat h/l for how right they are for each other #not that I think their relationship is completely healthy like this is def some enabling of both self-sacr4ifice and like #being kind of evil #but it works? it works for them #and they do have some breathtaking scenes #wayyy better dramatic romantic moments than novel wx imo #better speeches too #their relationship felt very holistic in comparison. like they were best friends and in love and trust and liked each other #just as much as possible in every single way #novel wx had this...sort of antagonistsic relationship and all this fraught miscommunication and deceit and disrespect #and they do care about each other and did get closer but it never felt like they were on the same page #then bam confession and they immediately fuck and go get married #and it's such an abrupt and jarring change even if you could tell they both loved each other #but h/l developed so richly and organically and naturally #and YET. it was missing that element of having shared principles and was in some ways #a more juvenile and self-indulgent romance than wx was #so you know. mixed bag #tgcf txp

Finding myself a bit frustrated with Ahriman as a character because I SEE his popularity and I think I like him - at least, the concept of him. But his novels don't really give me a lot to work with personality-wise and feel extremely vague and unfocused. Then again, I'm able to like him a lot more when he's being written by McNeill, so maybe the issue is just John French himself? Which is weird, because I'm pretty sure I've liked some of his novels, but the Ahriman series is such a fog. I sure remember scenes in the Ahriman novels but not why those scenes are happening.

#that was also an issue with Slaves to Darkness i think #the only scene i remember was Lorgar kissing Fulgrim #also i know its my stupid magnus brainrot but Ahriman Unchanged is probably the only novel in that series so far that WAS able to engage me #because it had magnus in it #and even though i find French's magnus not as interesting as McNeill imagining his shirtless body is keeping my attention 🤷��♂️#maybe Ahriman Eternal will be an improvement since it has Necrons and I love those guys #also that techpriest who ran the ship should have had a romance with ahriman js #i swear she was the one person Ahriman was consistently sweet towards #Funbox Posts #warhammer 40k #ahzek ahriman
