What We Do In the Shadows: The Musical Episode
I saw someone on Reddit say that the show would have officially jumped the shark if there was a musical episode, so here's my idea of how that would go!
It takes place a little before the s5 finale, so Nadja still thinks she has to be nice to people to break her hex. She already took Guillermo to the vet, so she's helping him on an errand run this time. At the moment, he is delivering Nandor and Lazlo's sperm to the witches, as is the deal they have made. As they arrive, the witches have just got back from seeing Wicked on Broadway for the umpteenth time. Nadja hasn't heard of it, so when they tell her, her inheritance of Lazlo's distaste for musicals and her own hatred of witches merge and she laughs at the idea of anyone enjoying singing sympathetic witches. The witches are offended and cast a spell on her and Guillermo, teleporting them to a demiplane where they can be taught a lesson. Since Guillermo was holding Lazlo and Nandor's sperm, they teleport alongside them. Colin Robinson also shows up, which confuses the others at first before he explains he was jealous of Lazlo and Nandor for being considered more vampire than him and the witches not wanting his sperm so he snuck some in when no one was looking, which wasn't difficult with how hot Lazlo and Nandor's are to look at (Lazlo concurs that "The old chap and I truly do have some magnificent spunk, wouldn't you say, my dahling?" Nadja agrees about Lazlo's but refuses to believe Nandor's could be all that great).
With that tangent over, the gang finds themselves in the dark behind a red curtain. Guillermo's been binging Twin Peaks recently, so he becomes afraid that the Black Lodge is real and they've been brought there. That's quickly disproven with no one talking backward, and their also confused why it’s even be called “the Black Lodge” if it’s red. The curtain rises and the gang learns that the witches will be magically forcing them to perform songs from various musicals to learn the True Meaning of Broadway. They hate it at first, but over time they come to like it. This is especially true of Colin, who at first thinks he can just use it to drain but then starts to recover his childhood enthusiasm for the art form.
Some musicals they could perform could include:
Phantom of the Opera (gothic romance for Lazlo/Nadja)
West Side Story (romance for Lazlo/Nadja)
Sweeney Todd (gothic romance for Lazlo/Nadja, see my in-depth post on this AU)
The King and I (Nandermo with emphasis on Nandor's old kingly role)
Oklahoma! (Cowboys for Jackie Daytona)
Guys and Dolls (idk too much about this one but it's a classic and there could be something with Dolly)
Cabaret (for the flamboyant queer sexy performance)
Hamilton (kinda obligatory at this point)
Fiddler on the Roof (this was brought in in the s4 finale, it should be expanded here)
Wicked (Nadja could finally come to appreciate witches and get her big Defying Gravity moment)
When everyone is having a great time and the moment has come for the grand finale, Lazlo leads the cast in a rousing rendition of a song "by none other than an old friend of mine, a true Chinese-American icon, who no doubt wrote this ballad about his treacherous journey from the Orient to these United States and this wonderous city of ours. Mr. Frank Sinatra!" It's New York, New York, and Lazlo mispronounces it in every incredible way possible, except for the final sweeping note.

Ok so no one asked but I was thinking about musicals and what I’ve been able to see over the years so I made a list. So this has taken over thirty years and most organised by other people and pretty much always in the cheap seats which are never actually that cheap anyway. I do live close enough to a big city and some big local theatres too so I’m a lucky spot and there’s more than I expected. Under the cut for anyone whose vaguely interested.
Professional Productions
Joseph and his amazing technical raincoat when I was ten - first musical I listened to the cassette (I know!!what’s that?) over and over for years I know pretty much every word
Les Miserables good songs - but like it says miserable
The Lion King it’s was ok but too much like the film to be exciting (sorry)
Frozen missed the first 20 minutes cos got the time wrong - the sets and the dress change are magnificent! Not too much like the film
Hairspray one of my favourites
Waitress had no idea what it was about but I loved it
Hamilton the most expensive tickets I’ve ever bought - took my daughter and her friend because they were obsessed
Chicago (on Broadway for 30th birthday trip)
Blood Brothers made me jump at end and then cry
The King and I with Trixi from call the midwife- amazing production. Cried again
9-5 in the underground theatre of the Savoy which was cool
Bugsy Malone a favourite film from my childhood took my kids
Bombay Dreams had to Google the name cos I’d forgotten seen in early 2000s but it was fantastic
The Rocky Horror Picture Show -dressed up for it when I was at uni very fun. Some people left at intermission not sure what they we’re expecting!
Anything goes or possibly Crazy for you- no memory of it really
Miss Saigon seen it twice, once from ‘the gods’ and couldn’t really see anything.
Guys and Dolls- had Ewan MacGregor in it which is why I went
Wicked reasonably good seats for this one excellent
Local amateur productions
Hairspray
Calamity Jane
Shrek - the strangest thing I’ve ever seen
Oklahoma
Little Shop Of Horrors
Singin in the rain was great and it rained on stage in my local theatre
West side story more than once
Local School Productions
The sound of music
West side story
My fair lady
Grease
Wizard of Oz
And finally Would Like to see
Six
Moulin Rouge booked for sept
Book of Morman
Mamma Mia
Everyone’s talking about Jamie

Ms. Holloway at the Gaslight
(I promise I'm also working on my Midgelenny Wips but I'm also having fun playing in this Weissman family sandbox)
Part 1, Part 2
The Gaslight, 1928
The sound of a jazz trio drifted up to greet them as Abe descended the familiar steps of the speakeasy, the lovely Rose Lehman on his arm.
"Oh Abe, this place is positively tantalizing!" she gasped.
A shy smile tugged at his lips. "I'm glad you like it. Bertie's no stranger to gin joints and to her credit this one does offer some of the better canapés in town. I just wish they'd clean the floors more often."
"Your sister sounds like such an adventurous soul. I can't wait to meet her! You said she lives in Canada?" Rose wondered, taking in the sights of the crowded basement bar.
"Yes, she moved there about five years ago to be with her husband Lester."
"Is he a Mountie?"
Abe chuckled, finding the notion absurd. "No."
"Oh."
"He's a musician. I believe he also dabbles in instrument repair," he explained.
"I see."
She looked around for an open table but her focus was quickly broken by his struggle to suppress a grin.
"What's so funny?" she asked.
Abe shook his head. "Just imagining Lester on a horse."
She blinked. "He doesn't know how to ride?"
"Of course not."
"It's not that uncommon of a skill," she sniffed primly.
He patted her hand gently, guiding her with the arm it was draped over. "Perhaps in Tulsa, but here in New York…"
Rose rolled her eyes. "There are still plenty of horses in New York City."
"Well…"
"People still have carts. There's the carriages in central park," she argued.
"I suppose…" he conceded unconvincingly, looking around the room.
"You're telling me you've never had the opportunity to ride a horse. Not ever in your entire life?" she wondered incredulously.
She knew things in New York were different from life in Oklahoma but everyone she'd ever known growing up had known how to ride.
"Opportunity or not, I am a scholar, Rose. My primary goals in life growing up involved extensive reading. One cannot read while on horseback."
She scoffed lightly. "Don't be silly. Of course you can! As long as the horse knows where it's going…"
"There he is!" A curly haired woman exclaimed boisterously from across the room as she crossed to greet them. "Doctor Abraham Weissman, PHD and President of the snooty-booties-who-only-like-to-talk-about-how-smart-they-are club."
Abe chuckled as the petite woman planted a kiss on his cheek. "Professor Weissman, Bertie. Please," he corrected. "I'm useless if someone in here has a heart attack. Don't go giving anyone the wrong idea."
His sister laughed. "Nonsense. You can exclaim e-gads he's having a heart attack! with the best of them."
"When have I ever uttered the phrase e-gads?" he contradicted.
Bertie ignored him, turning to acknowledge his date. "You must be Rose."
"Lovely to finally meet you, Bertha. I've so been looking forward to getting acquainted," Rose greeted.
"Oh, aren't you a doll! Abe, you really undersold how gorgeous she is. Yowzers! Love the bob."
"Thank you." Rose blushed, running a hand through the ends of her hair modestly.
"Come sit, come sit! I promise the chairs don't bite," Bertie welcomed.
Once they were seated, she turned a curious brow on her younger brother.
"So Professor," she drawled. "I take it the job offers have already started pouring in?"
"They will…at some point. I had an interview with Columbia recently that I think went rather well. I made sure to bring up some of the newer theories within my expertise that I intend to teach on, if hired. They also have a very elderly mathematics department. I sensed a few impending retirements when I was there."
"Columbia would be lucky to have you," Bertie assured him.
"Tell her about the apartment," Rose prompted.
"Apartment?" Bertie's eyebrows lifted in question.
Abe exhaled modestly. "I've heard rumors that a professorship would come with housing as one of the perks of the position."
"They let you have your pick of dormitory?" Bertie teased.
"The university owns a few apartments on the Upper West Side they reserve for their more prestigious instructors, especially those with a family in tow. And given that my dissertation was very well received and I've been making strides within the field while completing my degree, it seems within the realm of possibility…"
He glanced quietly at Rose as he mentioned family, keeping his hands clasped tightly on the table, likely in an attempt to keep himself from reaching for hers.
Bertie bit her tongue to keep from commenting on it.
She'd been more than a little miffed with her parents when she heard they'd hired a matchmaker for her brother. Butting in on her own love life when she was a singleton was one thing. She knew what to expect and what was expected of her. She could handle herself. But Abe had a tender heart behind that enormous brain of his. He could not withstand a true heartbreak if things fell through.
She blew out a breath, focusing on the part of the discussion she knew he was comfortable with.
"An apartment on the Upper West Side, a professorship at a renowned university. I can hear our parents kvelling from here," she beamed, shaking her head. "It will be all they talk about for the next year, mark my words. Abe Weissman, esteemed professor of mathematics and pride of all Manhattan! Were it not for the grandchildren I've given them, it would already be Bertha who?"
Abe let out a laugh at her playful ribbing. "How are the children? Did they enjoy the train ride?"
Bertie slumped dramatically in her seat. "Did they ever! Sherry kept pestering the poor chap working the dining car about the recipe for the cake she had and Jacob ran around the car until he passed out. Tishy napped most of the way. Speaking of which!"
Looking past them into the crowd, she called out, "Lester, dear, who's got our little Canadian contraband?"
"Just got her back from Viola. She insisted on giving her a bite of pickled egg just to see what she would do with it," Lester said, coming to join them, a baby wriggling happily on his hip.
"There she is!" Bertie cooed at the sight of her daughter.
"Oh!" Rose gasped in surprise as Lester joined them before she could stop herself.
"Miss." Lester gave her a smile. "Abe. Good to see you."
"You brought the baby? Why isn't she asleep at her grandparents' like the other children?" Abe wondered, turning to his sister in surprise.
"I can't be away from her all night. My tits would explode," Bertie replied with a laugh, watching her brother squirm a bit at the uncouth mention of lactation. "Besides, after that nap today on the train there's no way she would sleep through the night. Trust me, Mama doesn't need to take that on."
The little girl looked up as she settled in on her mother's lap.
"Oh, hello there! Aren't you a pretty little thing. What's her name?" Rose asked, fawning over the little cherubic face looking over at them.
"Laetitia."
"We call her Tish," Lester added, pulling up a chair and fixing the little one's sock.
"Would you like to hold her?" Bertie offered.
Rose blanched slightly, looking from the baby to her new designer dress.
"Well, I um…alright," she replied, caving to what felt like a test of her maternal qualifications.
Bertie handed her over, the little girl flashing a grin at being passed to someone new.
The smile quickly faded into an inquisitive, serious expression as she looked up at Rose, tilting her head slightly.
"Huh. That's odd. She's usually such a giggle goose," Bertie mused.
Rose blinked, plastering on a smile.
"Oh she probably is just curious about the pearls," she laughed, dangling the long strand for the little one to see.
"Abe! Great to see you Old Sport."
Abe looked up as one of the musicians came to greet them. "Chester! How long has it been?"
"Ages, chum. We must catch up. But first, I am parched! Can I convince you to tickle the ivories for me a spell?"
"Oh I don't know…" he replied modestly.
"I was actually going to tap in on the bass for a song or two if you care to join," Lester offered.
Abe bit his lip, wavering noncommittally. "My improvisational skills might not up to par these days. I'm so out of practice."
"You're welcome to stick to the script if that'll make you more comfortable. I brought a few pieces I've been working on."
Lester waved the sheets of paper he'd been keeping tucked in his pocket.
"Really?" Abe brightened, his interest piqued.
"You'd be the first to play them other than myself," Lester replied.
"Well in that case. That is if–"
He turned to look at the table.
"Go! Both of you. We girls can keep each other entertained without you just fine, can't we Rosie?" Bertie insisted.
"Rose?" Abe asked.
Rose nodded. "Go ahead, Abe. I know how much you adore playing. And I always love to hear you."
"We'll play something real sweet for you," Lester promised.
The pair of women watched them go as the men reacquainted themselves with the instruments.
"He seems nice," Rose observed.
Bertie nodded, smiling softly.
"He is."
Rose bounced Tish on her knee softly, sorting through just how she wanted to phrase what was going through her head. "So um, how did you two…"
"Fall in love?" Bertie offered mercifully.
"Well…yes."
The older woman glanced fondly at her husband. "I can't speak for him but for me it started right over there."
"Here? In this very room?" Rose wondered, already caught up in the tale. She'd always adored a love story.
Bertie nodded. "Part of why I like to swing through this part of town when we visit. I'm a bit sentimental. It was back when I was still trying to get my hat in the opera ring. Trying being the operative word. I had drifted in for a pick me up while I was working on an audition piece that had me completely stuck. I could not for the life of me get the language of the song to flow properly. It was from Carmen, I remember. Habanera specifically."
"Ah! L'amour est un oiseau rebelle. Beautiful number," Rose sighed.
Bertie chuckled. "You can say it better than I ever could."
"Well I spent a little time in Paris last year," Rose admitted proudly. "But do go on. Please."
She obliged. "Anyway, there I was, right over there, with my music and my martini, muttering the phrases of the song to myself over and over and over. And then the piano starts playing along."
Rose let out a gasp. "Was it Lester?"
Bertie smiled to herself at the younger woman's enthusiasm.
"It was indeed. I was so embarrassed at first but he had such a kind smile. We just ended up laughing and that led to talking and talking led to singing…" She sighed happily at the memory, growing thoughtful. "I remember he told me not to worry so much about the words and to just trust my gut. Riff a little. So I did. I don't think I'd ever truly loved performing until that moment. All those lessons and recitals growing up. The years at IMA. I knew I was meant for it. But I didn't love it until I knew him."
Rose blinked, touched by the notion.
Bertie smiled, brushing it off casually. "Anyhow, after that I knew I needed more of Les in my life. His smile lit up my whole world that night."
Rose felt herself grow a bit misty. "Oh my... That's actually quite beautiful."
Bertie shrugged. "Yeah it's not too shabby of a meet cute."
"And you knew he was the one right then?" Rose wondered.
Bertie thought for a moment. "No. I think I realized he was the one when I was struggling to come up with a stage name and he got so fed up with me pestering him for surname ideas that he said I should just borrow his since he wasn't using it."
Realizing she should explain, she added, "He goes by Jacobs when we're performing. Makes for less trouble if the show billing gets out to a more closed minded member of the public. But those who are fans of the act know the truth."
She took a sip of her water, looking into the glass as she held it in her hand. "It's funny. He lent me his name for a night and I finally felt like someone worthwhile. Like it was who I was meant to be."
Rose looked over at the stage as Abe began to play.
"Must have been comforting having someone so decisive in your corner."
There was a wistfulness, a longing in the young woman's eyes. And a trace of uncertainty.
Bertie followed her gaze.
"Something we have in common."
"Perhaps…"
Bertie chewed the inside of her lip. It was heartbreaking to see the poor thing pining. Especially when it was clear that Abe was smitten.
Or at least clear to her.
But not everyone knew him like she did.
After considering her words a moment, Bertie said, "My brother is not always the easiest man to understand. It can be difficult for him to share in words exactly what he feels. He can often get caught up in his work. To those unfamiliar with his character, he can come off as uncaring. Or just oblivious. But he does love very, very fiercely. His loyalty to those he gives his heart to is unparalleled."
She set her glass down, looking Rose head on. "I suspect once his position with Columbia is secured, he will have a few things he'll want to share with you. And a few questions. Or at least one. I hope you'll have your answer ready when he does."
Rose's smile bloomed brighter at the reassurance.
"My answer has been ready for a long time."
"I'm glad to hear it." Bertie reached over, giving Rose's hand a squeeze.
Tish began to giggle as she watched Rose's expression grow happier.
"There it is!" Bertie laughed.
The two women sniffed as an odor wafted from the beneath the little one.
"Oh boy. Hang on," Bertie chuckled apologetically, scooping her daughter up.
She took a peek down the back of Tish's diaper.
"Just gas. We dodged that one," she assured the younger woman with a laugh, settling back down.
"Oh. Good," Rose laughed uneasily.
Watching the little one snuggle into her mother's arms she couldn't help but ask, "Is it worth it? All the mess and crying?"
Bertie smiled softly, glancing at the stage as the song came to a close.
"With the right person it's all worth it."
"Hm…"
Rose smiled as Abe took a modest bow, clearly tickled by the applause.
Looking back to his niece before her, she couldn't help but note the family similarity in the child's warm brown eyes.
Three children seemed like a bit much. But she could probably handle two.

oops went off on my conservative gran again last night because I called to complain about the housing market because I'll never be able to afford a place to live again unless my salary magically doubles and nobody is paying that much. Naturally she decided to bring up my rich uncles the Dallas slumlords. me: I just wish I could buy property because I hate renting. I'm so sick of funneling all my money into the pockets of the greedy rich landlords. I wish we could stop them from buying up all the property so that people like me could afford to live.
gran: What about all the people who can't afford to buy property?
me: if there weren't all these landlords monopolizing housing, it would be more affordable.
gran: But that's what your uncles do. They buy up apartments and get companies to run them.
me: I know. that's why I don't get along with them so good. I really don't like that they're slumlords.
gran: UPH! Ah! Yuh—you can't say that! And you love your uncles!
me: Actually I haven't gotten along with uncle 2 very well at all since 2020 when we were at their house for christmas and he had the audacity to complain to me —who was literally homeless at the time— that he wasn't allowed to kick out all the tenants who were failing to pay rent during the pandemic. While he was drinking a $400 glass of whisky at his lake house where he keeps part of his luxury car collection.
gran: he didn't say that.
[#gaslightgatekeepgirlboss]
me: he did. I didn't say anything at the time because I didn't want to start a fight at christmas but I'll never forget it.
[I also made a post about it about 5 minutes after it happened because that's what you do when you've spent your whole life being gaslit by your family.]
I actually found out they were slumlords back in 2017, another time I was struggling with housing. I was talking about my struggles and Uncle 1 jokingly offered to let me rent a place in Dallas for a discount. He jokes like that all the time. One time he offered to buy me a car when mine was breaking down. Haha so funny. But this time I was so desperate I didn't realize he was joking. When I earnestly asked him if I could do that he immediately backtracked and said "you wouldn't want to rent the places we own." "I would though," I said. "I just want a place to live." "No," he said, "the buildings we own are run down and in bad parts of town." Like... buddy. My guy. Mine uncle. I'd just spent the last year renting a house where my next door neighbor kept 6 broken fridges in her front yard as lawn ornaments, my backyard neighbors beat their dogs, my front yard was a parking lot, and the abandoned house at the end of the street had creepy dolls in the windows. The absolute inability of the rich to comprehend or even acknowledge the struggles of the poor eternally flabbergasts me. And crazily enough I'd just had the exact same conversation with a rich christian guy from my church in Oklahoma City who owned slums there. Funny how I know so many people who own so much housing and yet they always look at me, a hard-working young pretty white girl (at the time) who should never have to face hardship according their f*cked up white supremacist prosperity gospel worldviews, and immediately confess that they're slumlords. It's almost like this is a systemic problem or something.

So this an analysis of a song as it pertains to Jesse and Mundy and their relationship as of Chapter 13. Warning I get... massively in-depth about this. Blessing of braintrot. I did this instead of writing. 😅
The song is Oklahoma Smokeshow by Zach Bryan.
Go on and put on that dress that all the bad boys like I know your daddy ain't home so ride with me tonight You always wind up here in a puddle of tears
Just them tbh. Jess is staunchly against dresses (and skirts!) but for this one day she says fuck it and wears a skirt (to impress Mundy of all things). Meanwhile, Charles is recovering from his whole incident, so it's not like he's able to stop her. These verses can be seen as Mundy acknowledging that despite his plans for the night and how much he's going to devote himself to protecting Jess, they're still in Vegas, Jess is still probably gonna get pissed, and she's gonna be even more Jess. This can be seen as him saying "Ok, go ahead and doll up, there's nothing in our way tonight, we can have some fun and you can act a little crazy and I'll be there to pick up there inevitable pieces when shit hits the fan."
Them boys are out and they're angry and they're looking for blood In the back of a blue old pickup truck You got nowhere to go although you're all gussied up
Not really applicable unless you consider the Valley Vultures, but that's not that big of a deal and Jess also wasn't dressed up them.
There's so much whisky in his coke it'll make her nose bend
The first hint that Jesse gets that Mundy hasn't quite kicked his alcoholism is when he lets her have a sip of his Hemingway champagne and she tastes how strong it is. Mundy doesn't drink soft spirits--he doesn't do wine or spritzers or light cocktails, though he does like beer. Mundy drinks hard liquor--whisky, bourbon, brandy, absinthe. This man drinks bushshine. He drinks to get drunk and forget. Small vices kill your big dreams.
But she swears that his love is a damn Godsend She's known God since she was a child
Jess is Catholic, was raised Catholic, and is very much of the "everything happens as god's intention" variety. She's also of the "but sometimes shit just happens" variety. She's not sure what category Mundy falls in, but she's happy enough with him that she thinks it's the former.
She used to play in the yard and she would dream of one day Till the world came around and took her dreaming away Told her how to dress and act and smile
100% Jesse. The world that came and took her dreams--her aspirations of a baseball career--were largely things she couldn't control (such as MLB not allowing female players). This, coupled with her mother insisting that Jess be a proper lady, is what led to her rebelling and joining the boy's baseball team and going stealth. Even when she was discovered it was mostly alright, but Donovan persisted and that's where things fell apart.
She's an Oklahoma smokeshow
Ok neither of them are from Oklahoma but let's be honest, they're both smokeshows. For Jess: Mundy especially thinks this when he finally sees Jess gussied up. For Mundy: Jess is just always thinking this all the time.
He's an asshole from back home
For Mundy: "Back home" as in rural Outback NSW. And let's be honest, he is a little bit of an arsehole. For Jess: This lyric actually fits better for her than him. For Mundy, when he says he's from Tilpa, he has to explain where exactly Tilpa is each and every time. Curse of coming from the outskirts of a town with a population of 15 on the banks of the Darling. But for Jess, "back home" is simply saying "New York." She doesn't even need to say the name of the city itself because there's no confusion between the city and the state. Also Jess is an arsehole at times. Most the time, even.
She'll never make it out alive From that small town bar scene Where small vices kill your big dreams
Whatever dreams either of them had--Mundy of being someone his parents could be proud to say was their son, Jess and her baseball career--are squashed the moment these two stepped foot on the paths that eventually led them to Teufort. And they're both trapped in this small town, where small vices--corruption, greed, lust, cruelty, callousness, arrogance, cowardice--have killed their big dreams. And it's Teufort--there's a fair chance that neither of them are ever leaving TF Industries alive. This job's for life.
He'd take you home but he's too drunk to drive
This has two meanings. One, you can look at it from the perspective of chapter 13, where Mundy is quite literally too drunk to make a return drive to New Mexico and so the pair stay in Las Vegas for the night and fuckstart a relationship. Or two, you can look at it from a perspective of Mundy wanting Jess to be happy and how his vices get in the way of that. You can bet that if Jess ever expressed her secret desire to just go home to her mum and leave Teufort behind that Mundy would make the drive to bring her home in a heartbeat--if he could keep the muzzle on his alcoholism for that long.
I've been here, I've been up all night Thinking 'bout a life with you and I One you'll never know cuz you're a small town smokeshow
This applies to both of them. Both Jesse and Mundy are of the belief that things would never work out between them because of their differences. Jesse loves where she grew up, and Mundy can't handle cities. Mundy loves the bush, and it's fair to say that Jesse wouldn't survive out there without constant supervision.
Both of them stay up at night imagining what their lives would be like if they could just find some middle ground that both find acceptable, but Mundy doesn't do well outside of Australia for too long, and Jess seems to have similar luck outside of the States (looking at the Italy incident) in addition to seeing Australia as some mystical land full of dangerous things (she's not far off, but Mundy doesn't appreciate it).
These two both know that they're likely incompatible, and they've both resigned themselves to their affections only being one-sided, but they still stay up at night thinking about a life with each other despite knowing full well that even if they did get what they wanted, in the end they're likely doomed to be star-crossed lovers.
Go on and put on that dress that all the bad boys like I know your daddy ain't home so ride with me tonight You always wind up here in a puddle of tears
These verses are repeated but there's a hint of resignation in the singer's voice that I think fits Mundy's mood well in the first two scenes of chapter 13. He knows full well what tonight is going to consist of, knows that Jess will be gussied up, knows that he's going to have to suffer through people staring at her and that he'll be angry at that because they don't know her like he does.
He's worried about something happening to her, about her getting too drunk, about the car, about people flirting with her, worst he's worried about the idea of her leaving with someone who isn't him. There's a level of possessiveness here. But he's resigned, and he's deciding that whatever happens, it's alright. He'll be there to pick up the pieces if she needs it. If she needs him.
Those boys are out and they're angry and they're looking for blood In the back of a blue old pickup truck You got nowhere to go although you're all gussied up
This whole song fits well with events of Jesse's birthday, but I think these verses, the last in the song, fit better with the aftermath. This is Mundy acknowledging that once BLU learns of what happened in Vegas they'll be out for his blood--Charles and Liem in particular, with Liem owning that blue ute--but it's also Mundy acknowledging that he'll do Vegas a million and one times until it inevitably catches up with him. You're all gussied up, so let's go somewhere. Even if it kills me.

Legislator Confirmed To Be Marilyn Manson
From the archives of Oklahoma’s great political satire writers of decades past, we bring you this classic reprint of a spoof that caused more than a little irritation to the political class on Lincoln Blvd.
OKLAHOMA CITY (OP) – House Republicans were shocked to learn that one of their own, Rep. Tad Jones, R-Claremore, had previously fronted 90’s shock-rock band Marilyn Manson. In his rock-and-roll heyday, Manson was renown for his satanic imagery and explicit lyrics.
The star fell from prominence in the late 90s, the victim of post-Columbine fallout and overshadowed by the rise of such provocative acts as Eminem and Creed.
Changing his name to Tad Jones, “the most boyish, innocent-sounding name I could think of,” Manson was elected to the District 9 seat in 1998. As a performer, Manson was renown for his on-stage antics, including stunts featuring goats’ blood, blow-up dolls and strap-on dildos.
As the House minority whip, Jones has authored legislation regarding school district elections and the use of golf carts on city streets. He says his day as the quasi-satanic musician are behind him, though he may still cover himself in blood during House debate.

"The Herricanes" Screens at Nashville Film Festival
Tumblr media
Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and make a trail." (Ralph Waldo Emerson) That quote appears at the beginning of the documentary "The Herricanes," which played at the Nashville Film Festival on Monday, October 2, 2023. Olivia Kuan's Mom played football. Olivia thought it was something any girl could do Upon learning how unique her mother's experience was, the young filmmaker decided to document her mother, Basia Haszlakiewicz's, participation in the female football leagues of the seventies. Basia played for the Houston Herricanes in the NWFL (National Women's Football League.) Ms. Kuan's excellent documentary traces the origins of female contact football. She interviewed members of several teams of the seventies. Additionally, she did a great job of labeling each interview subject onscreen. The research and editing team did a terrific job of assembling the interviews into a coherent whole. The archival production team consisted of Kelsey Carr and researcher Chris Morcam. Still photographs and film footage from the games of the seventies take us back in time. The documentary embraces the concept "it's okay for women to be whole people." Another truth the film underscores: "It's important to create a world that welcomes everyone." Interesting timing. Olivia Hill, the first trans-gender woman to hold office in Nashville, was sworn in this very day as one of 5 council-members at large for the Metro area. Meanwhile, the state of Tennessee has banned drag shows in the very recent past. Title IX The entire idea of letting women play contact football grew out of the cultural shift of Title IX in 1972. Title IX said that no school could discriminate on the basis of sex in extra-curricular offerings in public schools. Today's youth don't remember what a sea change this was, but I do. I began teaching junior high school students in 1969 and witnessed the changes of the seventies firsthand. Olivia's mother, Basia Haszlakiewicz, played for the Houston Herricanes in the seventies. To the argument women "don't want to play contact sports" the rebuttal was,"They've never been given the opportunity to see if they want to play football." Today, one of the early supporters of female football runs Gridiron Girls camps. Youngsters who know nothing about Title IX can try football out. Be the Revolution As the film emphasizes, it is not easy to be first. Four National Women's Football League teams were founded in 1974. Among the teams participating over the years were the Toledo Troopers, the Dallas Bluebonnets, the Los Angeles Dandelions, the Dallas/Ft. Worth Shamrocks, the Oklahoma City Dolls, the San Antonio Flames, and the Houston Herricanes. There were initially 14 teams with 3 divisions. The power team was Oklahoma City. In fact, the Oklahoma City Dolls didn't lose a game until their sixth season. The Dolls put a  beat-down on the Herricanes in their first meetings. They averaged 35 points a game and routinely beat the early Herricanes by scores as lopsided as 40 to 0 and/or 56 to 0. The Houston Herricanes But the Herricanes steadily improved and were competitive near the end of the league's existence. The players had to buy their own equipment ($88,15 in Olivia's Mom's case) and it took $50,000 to keep a team afloat. There were more people on the field than in the stands. This did not help the financial situation of the teams. The comment is made in the documentary that parity for women in any sport is yet to be achieved. The documentary made it clear that support for women's contact football in Europe is much stronger, citing the 2019 World Championship in Leeds, England. Teams thrive in countries like Sweden, Finland, New Zealand, Germany and England. As for the original NWFL teams, they began to fold in '78 (Los Angeles Dandelions) and '79 (Toledo Troopers, Oklahoma City Dolls, Houston Herricanes,) Some (the Dallas/Ft. Worth Shamrocks) had folded earlier. The 1979 Championship game was canceled. Today, there are over 100 teams playing, worldwide, and women's sports are increasing in popularity (Natalie Portman is one owner of a woman's team). This interesting and informative documentary---one of the best at the Nashville Film Festival---gives you the history of the genesis of contact football for females. It's a well-done fun documentary.
