SHADOW KNIGHT HEADCANONS
aka things from my rewrite
idea from @xerith-42 <- <- <-
————————————————————
Appearance:
They have pointed ears. They’re not as large as an elf’s or half elf’s ears, really just the size of a human’s ear… But pointed.
They’re skin sparkles. (Edward who?) Idk why I added this I just like the idea of Laury lookin like he’s rocking body glitter 24/7 ig. It’s most noticeable in direct sunlight.
They’re eyes are reflective, like a cats, and often glow in the dark. They’re eyes also appear more… empty… than a regular person’s. Almost uncanny.
When in their full Shadow Knight form, their irises become red, and the whites of their eyes turn black. The skin around their eyes also becomes red and cracked, almost irritated looking.
They have fangs. Much like this v
Tumblr media
They each have a scar pertaining to the way in which they died. (Assuming it wasn’t something like poison). It is usually a dark grey or black color, but not always.
When they are premature, their fingers and toes are blacken. This is called the corruption. Each SK has at least some, but the amount tells you how long they resisted gaining their immortality. The longer they go without gaining their immortality, the further up the corruption creeps, only stopping at the shoulders and hips.
They have Rune Scars and Tattoos. The tattoo is located on their palms and is the source of their SK abilities. It’s embedded with the curse of binding so it cannot be removed or carved out. The scars are on their face, three claw marks on each cheek. These are referred to as The Tears. These scars enhance their SK abilities.
While in their full SK form, their scar runes turn black and emanate pure darkness. Their fingernails also grow into claws that are extremely sharp and nearly unbreakable.
All SKs appear pale, no matter their skin tone. They have no red/pink/orange undertones bc their blood technically no longer flows.
They often appear very ridged or mannequin like. Standing either too perfectly or too hunched over. Again, uncanny.
Because of all these physical traits, Shadow Knights are very easy to spot, assuming you know what to look for. Many trying to hide or blend in, will hide their heads, faces, and hands.
THE… OTHER STUFF:
Their body temperature fluctuates quite a bit. Generally, theyre cold to the touch, because yk their dead. But when they feel strong emotions like anger or happiness their temp rises, possibly to the point where they feel feverish. The only emotions that actively make them colder are sadness and fear.
Their temp also rises when the Calling comes a knocking. Rising hotter and hotter the longer they try to ignore or fight it.
^ Inspired by a convo with @xerith-42
It’s impossible to sleep in the Nether, though the reason is unknown. Because of this, Shadow Knights don’t require sleep. They still can sleep, but it’s not a necessity. Premature Shadow Knights however, still become tired and can still feel the physical repercussions of having no sleep.
Similarly, SKs also no longer need to eat or drink. However again, prematures do. Since not much grows in the nether, they’re forced to eat Nether Wart. It’s essentially a very tough, charcoal tasting mushroom. It’s their only source of food OR water as water cannot be found anywhere else in the Nether.
While they’re in the Nether, their blood becomes cold to accommodate for the extreme heat. Because of this they need to be careful about regulating their emotions while in the nether so their blood doesn’t overheat.
Nether time is faster than Overworld time. A year in the Nether is only a few months in the Overworld, if that.
Premature SKs can be killed the same ways a human can be, due to their lack of immortality. A full SK however, is a bit more tricky. Their physical form can be killed, though it is more difficult due to a combination of things, but they respawn. If their body dies, is will *poof* disappear and reappear back in the Nether on an alter. The amount of time it takes to respawn depends on the severity of their injury. A full SK can only be permanently killed with an enchanted Netherite weapon (hehe minecraft reference). These are extremely rare and hard to come by. …Zenix has one…
When a PMSK (Premature Shadow Knight) is trained, they fight against real, full SKs. They could very well be killed during their training, call it natural selection. The PM is expected to kill the Full SKs they’re fighting against.
Soul sand houses the souls of innocent lives taken by Shadow Knights. Their souls not only add fuel to their power, but also gives strength to the Shadow Lord/Shad.
In Shad’s eyes, someone with magicks or brains is often more valuable than someone who is physically strong. Though physical strength is needed in order to be a SK, if they are not particularly clever and they have no magicks, they aren’t very useful. Often used as simple pawns or sacrifices.
The first ever Shadow Knight was some random guy named Randal. He didn’t fit any of the criteria, in fact he was just some farmer who ate a bad potato and suffered the consequences. Shad only resurrected him to experiment a bit.
A Shadow Knight’s armor isn’t actually armor. It’s more like a shell that pops out when their body recognizes it’s needed. Or at least when it thinks it does. These shells are generally identical, but they do each have some variations depending on the person and their alignment. Their weapons are an extension of this shell as well, and can be any hand held weapon. Weather is a sword, hammer, mace, or even daggers. Swords are just most people’s go-to. Along with this, they cannot drop their weapons as they are basically a part of them. The only way to rid of it is by… sucking?? it back into the shell. Think of venom. But less… slimy.
They’re impervious to fire/lava. At any stage, full or pm.
Oooookay that’s all I got
Thanks for reading this far love ya mwah mwah

Now, we've talk about what happens to the shadow knights when Shad dies.
But what happens to the nether?
Everything involving Shad/The Nether/Shadow Knights literally has a physical part of Shad within it. So what happens to these things when he's gone?
We've decided that the SKs either pass on, or live in their paralyzed bodies. There's not enough left of themselves to keep going once Shad has died.
Originally, I thought something similar would happen to the nether. The fires would stop, the lava would solidify, leaving the Nether blanketed in darkness.
However, @cinnamontoastcroonch brought something else up.
We were getting into the topic of the blue flames and how they signify rebellion. Cinnamon thought that the Nether would turn blue over time, to show the rebellion's control over the Nether.
I like this idea. A lot. But, I'm thinking something different would happen.
To know what the nether would be without Shad, we need to know what it was before.
Of course, The Nether is an alternate universe. It existed on it's own, possibly for billions of years before the Divine Warriors banished Shad there. So, what did it look like when Shad first got there?
It was blue, much like those new nether biomes in the somewhat recent update.
Tumblr media
This is what it was before Shad. Before he cursed the land.
It was almost a utopia. There were animals, and crops. The Nether could live on its own.
However, Shad's anger was brewing. He's the realm breaker, and his power was uncontained. But Irene made sure to put him somewhere he couldn't break. Not entirely.
He tried. He wanted to escape, and tear Irene down from her throne. His anger festered, and tainted the land. As he tried to break through the barrier, he embedded part of himself into the world around him. He became the Nether.
So, when he dies, the Nether is free. Much like Laurance and Vylad, the Nether celebrates once it's free. Trees grow, flowers bloom. The mobs are uncorrupted.
But we know that it can't sustain this. After a few years, maybe decades, it all starts to wilt. The Nether tried to hold onto what was left, but it couldn't keep going.
The trees die, the crops wilt, the animals are starving.
And it's gone. A husk of it's former self.
The Nether is clouded in darkness, empty for eternity.

I think its time we (or at least I) stop being delulu and accept the fact that once aphmau defeats the shadow lord for good, Laurance is going to die.
The nether cannot exist without the Shadow Lord, and since it is confirmed the nether runs through Shadow Knight’s blood and the nether is the only thing keeping them conscious, all shadow knights die the moment the Shadow Lord is defeated.

Hello, you were open to asks right ? Do you have any head cannons about Shad and the shadow knights or how the Nether can affect the beings living in it ?
Obligatory reminder that I'm going to make it a habit to rename Shad to Araphel in all my posts until I don't have to put this reminder here.
I already touched on a few of my Araphel specific headcanons before (though there will be more), and I've made quite a few posts about Shadow Knights. The Nether on the other hand--
So obviously MCD was made long before the ever important Nether Update, but I think we should incorporate that into our ideas of this series. I'm just saying that a Bastion would be even more absolutely terrifying if the mfs hunting you in there were vicious Shadow Knights with a taste for blood that hasn't been satiated in Irene knows how long.
Warped forests are the most relaxing biome of the Nether, the colors of it often being a relaxing presence for Shadow Knights. Basalts are the worst to navigate, and even if they're immortal, dragging yourself out of a pool of lava you got concussed falling into because you made a single misstep just sucks no matter what.
Also, Shadow Knights aren't the only creatures of the Nether. Obviously I want all the Nether creatures that are there to be there, though I'd take Enderman out of Warped Forests and make Piglins a sort of shadow variant that makes it clear they were a race that existed in the Nether before, but Araphel's influence spreads like a plague. I think Wither Skeletons totally fit the vibe, I could see them just being the reanimated and smashed together bones of those who have fallen in the Nether but weren't worthy of becoming a Shadow Knight.
I think that Shadow Knights are adapted to live in the Nether. They're designed to sustain constant heat that's mostly dry (so living in Southern Arizona), and not much else. This means that the cold has a much more severe impact on them, and they really don't do well when it gets humid, girls are not built to sweat it feels so weird on their fucked up skin.
And there's those Shadow Souls! Those are a thing Jess wrote into the series! I think they're like the lost souls of those who died in the Nether who want to find bodies so they can become Shadow Knights...? Hold on Imma check the wiki.
Okay I was close, they're Shadow Knights who lost their physical forms and seek out a new host which... How does a Shadow Knight lose their physical form? Great question! I'd like to know the answer too! The solution to this problem is that they're both of the definitions I put above. I think they're great and totally seem like something Araphel would enjoy watching the pitiful existence of.
Because that's all the Nether really is to him. Another part of his game with Irene. Another playing field, an empty worthless world full of life that is only good to kill, maim, or take as his own for those same purposes. The life of the Nether never had a chance to fight against Araphel. Once he was able to return to partial power there was nothing that could stop him from spreading his miserable influence to the rest of this wretched realm. It's not like it was doing anything good to begin with.
I think the being known as Araphel that currently lives in the Nether is removed from the physical body he once inhabited, instead just being the worst parts of his soul banished. When Irene banished him she, and I quote "Shattered his relic". The relic is tied to the divine warrior in a very direct way, so I'd like to think that when his relic shattered, so did Araphel's soul. The better parts of his soul managed to find one another, refine, and reincarnate. Eventually.
The soul that lives in the Nether is the embodiment of his hatred, his jealousy, his rage, his resentment, all of the worst parts of his being condensed into a single irradiated spectre that refuses to rest. It seeks out the other parts of its soul, he seeks to be whole again. If Araphel can reform his soul and get his hands on that relic, then it's all over for anyone who dared to stand in his way.
When he wasn't in this miserable state, Araphel was once a man worth loving. He was known as the destroyer, but those he destroyed were those who threatened his loved ones. He destroyed tyrants, those who would abuse their rule, those who would harm his friends, and he would show no mercy to any being foolish enough to even think of laying a hand on Irene.
He had a rather dry sense of humor, one that bounced off of Kul'zak's endless ramblings and Menphina's sarcasm very well. He often sat with them in their little meadow, lamenting his woes of missing Irene while she was off saving more lives that he couldn't care less about. Araphel was the first to become disillusioned with humanity entirely, the near immortality of the relic weighing him down constantly. It was only a few years after he got it that he came to the conclusion only other relic holders could understand him.
The only reason that changed was when he got a whiff of betrayal. When he realized that something was wrong with how long Kul'zak and Enki had been gone, how Menphina was suddenly nowhere to be found despite eagerly answering his requests to see one another before. It was then that he retreated to the forest by O'Khasis with a mortal woman who held similarities to him. He wanted their descendants to look as much like him as possible.
He got his wish.

The Nether: Shadow Knight’s Retelling
I suggest you listen to Ptolemaea by Ethel Cain with headphones while reading this for an extra spooky factor
The Nether. The realm of the dead and the damned is anything but dead. It lives, the way an animal lives with rabies. The ceiling pulses as if it were at one time a heart, the walls breathe in shallow labored wheezes. The sand groans and wails, souls of the damned doomed to forever lay beneath. They take hold of your feet, to drag you down so you can lay with them for eternity. It’s hot. So hot you’d rather be bitten by frost a thousand times over. The smell of rotting flesh and burning hair over takes your body and suffocates you. There are eyes on every wall, ears in every hall. This place is not a welcoming one. And yet, it’s calling to you. Beckoning you to come closer, the sweet suductive whisper of a violent and gruesome end. Even after you’ve escaped, you’ll never be the same. You’ll see the nether on you face, in you hands, feel it’s anger in your bones, it’s hatred in your beatless heart. The smell of rot clings to your skin and never leaves your mind. Even after you’ve escaped, it begs and beckons and calls for your return. At first a whisper. That whisper turns to a yell then a scream and it’s deafening. You’ll cry and yell and plead your voice raw, until you have no choice. Deep in your bones, in the pit of your stomach, you know where you truly belong. You’re a knight of shadows and the King needs his loyal servants at his side.

Starting to check out 1.20 and I love that it's hinting at lore-accurate dimensional art styles and clothing!! I'm not sure how these armor-modifying templates are found, but could End and Nether ruins have ended up in the Overworld? I wonder how...?
I don't have much intelligent commentary to add to this rn because I've just reopened minecraft after forever, but ouuuhhhhhhhh thank you mojang for the LORE
