4, 13, 21, 24, 25, 33, 42, 57, 63, 70 and 71 for the fic writer ask game!
Thank you for the questions! Okay, this took some time and thought. And some of my answers are long. It will be under a "read more" out of convenience and respect for my mutuals and followers.
4. what is the plot bunny you’ve been carrying for the longest? optional bonus question: do you ever wonder why you haven’t written it yet and experience deep existential dread?
I really want to write a background and sidestory for a one-off character from George Lopez that Tony O'Dell played. I don't think I've written it yet for a few reasons:
a) I don't know if his character is named Blaine (dialogue and closed captions) or Patrick (credits on IMDb and from the end of the episode).
b) I kinda want to ask Tony about that episode and role.
c) I haven't had time or haven't sat down and focused on it enough to start writing it.
No, I don't experience existential dread over it.
13. talk about a writing experience that has pleasantly surprised you.
This isn't going to take long. But in writing my first fic, Is This Love?, I learned that I can write sexy things. This is the opposite of the "write what you know" advice. I have done research and will continue to do more. I've talked with others who have written smut. And I have had some friends read over what little I have written. As I tend to write out of sequence, I haven't published the smut and I'm still a bit anxious about it, but I decided to do this to prove to myself that I could. I wouldn't be upset if Is This Love? is the only fic that I write that contains smut, but proud of myself.
21. pick a writer to co-write a book with and tell us what you’d write about.
A fellow fanfic writer? Hmm, I would say @curiousdamage @missviolethunter @cecexwrites @rynnie-rynn @themaradwrites @avatarskywalker78 and/or @the-time-lord-oracle.
With Curious, MissV, Rynn, and/or AvatarSkywalker78, I would write something for The Karate Kid or Cobra Kai because that is the main fandom that we have in common. The first three were with me when I created my OCs and I honestly would trust them to write Julie or Alyssa. But all of them have strengths writing other characters in that fandom that I'm not sure I can do justice or write with the nuance they deserve.
Curious, MissV, and I could finally write that spinoff/revival-type fanfic for The Equalizer with Scott McCall and his OC daughter as the central characters. Or Curious and I could write a Cagney & Lacey story.
With Cece, it would probably be a story set in the Wizarding World with supporting and minor canon characters.
Obviously, a Doctor Who story with The_Time_Lord_Oracle.
And were I to write an original story, it would be with Rynn or Mara.
All of these writers are ones that I greatly admire, consider friends, have created some of the best original characters (I wish they all were canon and I would protect them to the end), and have written many of my favorite stories.
If you are asking about published/professional authors, I'm not sure. Maybe Rick Riordan, Richelle Mead, David McIntee, Timothy Zahn, Jude Watson, or Cassandra Clare (yes, I know some of the allegations against her, but she is still one of my favorite YA writers).
24. on average, how much writing do you get done in a day?
It really depends on it's a workday vs. weekend, how much time I've had to write, and how inspired I was. If I write at least 500 words, I consider it a productive day.
25. what’s your revision or rewriting process like?
I edit as I write, which makes the writing process longer, I'm sure. Then I send it to my beta. After I hear their thoughts and suggestions, I take into account if those serve the story and make appropriate edits. Then I will post it on AO3.
33. do you start with the characters or the plot when writing?
Honestly, a very rough plot idea. The characters are my main focus and I spend more time thinking about how to develop them and how they will react to the plot.
42. describe the aesthetic of a story in 5 words.
Let me preface this with "I'm not sure that I'm doing this right."
Family. Friendship. Discovery. Magic. Adventure.
57. what is the last thing that a fic made you google when you were reading it?
Okay, these might not be the actual last things, but they are the best that I can remember: Camille Coduri's natural hair color and Billie Piper's eye color.
63. what’s the best insult you’ve read in a fic?
I've read so many fics that I honestly don't know. I'm sorry.
70. are you very critical of your own writing? how much do you find yourself editing (either during the writing or after the fact)?
Yeah, I think I am. I second-guess myself a lot. I edit as I write, so I might spend hours on the same damn paragraph because I didn't like the original word choice, felt it was too similar to something I had previously written, or numerous other reasons. I once nearly trashed everything I wrote for Is This Love? and lay on my bed crying because I thought I was being too harsh on Jimmy and my OC Julie.
71. how do you balance writing and life? do you ever feel overwhelmed by the amount of writing you have to do?
Hahaha. Balance? What's that? Ironic isn't it, considering that I write for The Karate Kid and Cobra Kai? Yes, I constantly feel overwhelmed by the amount of writing that I have to do. I want to be able to post two chapters for three of my WIPs by the end of 2024. I haven't worked on two of them at all yet. I haven't done any writing since early or mid-February. Sometimes, I feel like a failure because I started writing Is This Love? in 2018 and I haven't even started writing the scenes concurrent with the plot of The Karate Kid, while I've got friends and mutuals who can write, finish, and post a few multichapter fics within a few months.

Did Molly ever meet the Doctor? If she hasn't, who would she meet and how would that go?
Yes! Molly actually gets to meet a few Doctors. I haven't written any of these encounters out yet, but I'll tell you some of who she meets and how those instances go.
Sixth Doctor - When Molly was three, she got lost/separated from her dad on a shopping trip*. She saw a blue box that said "police" on it, knocked and asked for help. Six and Peri would reunite father and daughter. Molly told the Doctor she liked his coat because it had "pretty colors." She didn't learn this was the Doctor until years later.
Tenth Doctor - Molly was with Sarah Jane, Luke, K9, and Mr. Smith when the Daleks moved the Earth. She sees the Tenth Doctor on the computer screen when they use the Subwave Network. Molly will get to meet him in person when he crashes Sarah Jane's wedding. She gets a trip in the TARDIS as a reward. I think she also gets to see Ten on his Farewell Tour.
Third Doctor - Molly will find herself in UNIT HQ during the 1970s. She will require his and UNIT's help to get home.
Eleventh Doctor - Helps the Doctor and her friends thwart the Shansheeth's plans.
I feel like she will meet more incarnations of the Doctor, but I haven't thought that far ahead.
Thank you so much for asking! It made me so happy on my lunch break to see your question. 🥰
*There is more to this story, but I'm still developing this plot.

Even though I'm not anywhere close to writing this part yet, I am thinking of picking a setting for when Molly time travels to the 1970s and meets a younger version of her Grandpa Mike.
Because of the messiness of dating the UNIT years and taking into account stories from TV, audios, books, and comics, I'm having a hard time deciding when Molly should meet the UNIT crew.

Molly Yates Updates
Okay, so I made The Molly Yates Chronicles a series on AO3, ordering my Halloween prompt ficlets into chronological order. I also added two new additions, as they are the true second and third chapters in this story. As I add more stories, the series order may change. I can also tell you that as I get into the 2005 era of Doctor Who and start adapting The Sarah Jane Adventures, there will be multichapter fics.
When I start posting to Wattpad, I will make it all one fic, as I sincerely doubt that I'll reach that website's chapter limit of 200.
For now, you can read "Arrival" and "Grandad", as well as the other previously written ficlets on AO3.

I've watched "The Time Monster" so many times that I created a mini-AU for my Molly Yates story. It was fluffy, but I can't use it. But it was nice to have inside my head while I couldn't write Molly's story proper.

Do I create another OC for my Doctor Who/Sarah Jane Adventures story?
If I do, I have an idea of who they could be. But do I need them?

Note
For the character ask game: David & Mike, please! 1 OC, 1 Canon!
David Yates
Sexuality Headcanon: Heterosexual
Gender Headcanon: Cis male
A ship I have with said character: Hestia, aka The Woman in Red, in another life. There is another person that I ship with David, but... spoilers!
A BROTP I have with said character: Alan Jackson. The two single dads get along very well.
A NOTP I have with said character: Also, Hestia. After she left Molly on his doorstep and didn't come back for over a decade, there was no hope for reconciliation and he really doesn't want her around his daughter. Also, he and Sarah Jane will not be a thing. She's close to his dad's age and he doesn't approve of the danger she brings into the kids' lives.
A random headcanon: David likes science fiction as a genre and liked reading comic books as a kid, but never believed that anything that he read about or watched could actually happen, like alien invasions, magic, and cloning. He's in for a big surprise.
General Opinion over said character: David is a great dad, but kinda overprotective when it comes to his daughter's heart. After Molly came into his life, David focused on her and his career. He barely dated; only doing so when Molly was spending time with his dad or at a rare sleepover or school function. David didn't want her to get attached to a potential mother figure only for things to not work out. This backfired on him a time or two.
Mike Yates
Sexuality Headcanon: Possibly bisexual (closeted in his youth, mostly dated women).
Gender Headcanon: Cis male
A ship I have with said character: I honestly believe that Mike was in love with Jo Grant.
A BROTP I have with said character: Jo, John Benton, the Brigadier, the Doctor, Sarah Jane. What can I say? I love my UNIT family. Also, Molly, because he and his granddaughter had an instant connection.
A NOTP I have with said character: I'm not sure I have one? If you pressed me, I might say Benton/Yates and Brigadier/Yates.
A random headcanon: Being brainwashed by BOSS was deeply traumatizing for him. He has a lot of guilt over the Golden Age betrayal.
General Opinion over said character: I really love Mike Yates. He's my favorite male companion. He had an amazing character arc in his last few appearances. I honestly wish that Richard Franklin had been more available in Seasons 9 and 10 and that the writers had done more for the character. I wish he had been in "The Three Doctors" with the Brig, Benton, and Jo. Or even in a Big Finish multi-doctor story. I would have loved his thoughts on the multiple Doctors.

RULES: Post the last sentence you wrote (fanfic / original / anything) and tag as many people as there are words in the sentence
Tagged by @goldheartedchaoticdisaster
Thank you so much for the tag! I actually wrote this last night for my rewrite of The Molly Yates Chronicles. The chapter I'm working on introduces Molly's sister. The scene this sentence comes from is where David comes to terms with being a father again.

When Clyde told them that his nan’s friend had seen a ghost at her retirement home, Molly was intrigued.  It’s been so long since she’s met a ghost.  She has felt their presence before, but most ghosts prefer to keep to themselves.
Sarah Jane, ever the journalist, asks if other residents of Lavender Lawns have seen the ghostly nun.  Clyde confirms it.
“I thought there was no such thing as a ghost,” Luke says.
“Maybe that’s what we’re about to find out,” Sarah Jane replies with a smile to her new son.
“Of course, they’re real,” Molly insists.
Clyde stares at her.  “Don’t tell me you believe in ghosts!”
She glares at him.  “Of course, I do.  I’ve met one.”
Sarah Jane glances at her in the rearview mirror.  “Really, Molly?  Do tell.”
Molly explains what happened when her dad took her camping at Mount Madonna County Park.

Prompt-oween Day 26
@occreatorexchange
Prompt: Your OC gets lost on a walk in the woods, has a few scares, and is rescued by their partner or a friend.
Fandom: The Sarah Jane Adventures/Doctor Who
Characters: OC Molly Yates, Luke Smith, Clyde Langer, Sarah Jane Smith, Maria Jackson, minor appearance by Kaagh
Rating: T
Word Count: 1353
Notes: This will end up being five scenes in my adaptation of "The Last Sontaran" from Series 2 of The Sarah Jane Adventures when I get around to writing more of The Molly Yates Chronicles.

After hearing about Alan’s job offer and that Maria might move, Molly ran out of the building.  It hurt too much.  She’s already been left by her mother.  She couldn’t bear the thought of being left behind by her best friend.
Molly wipes away her tears.  “I know I’m being selfish,” she admits to herself.  She wants what is best for Alan and Maria.  She does.  But that lonely girl who hates change threatens to lash out.  Just like when Dad moved them to London.  Molly can also admit that a part of her is jealous that the Jacksons are going to be living in America and see Washington DC.  She had never seen her nation’s capital because it was on the other side of the country.  Unless one counts flying over it.
She needs to focus on finding Luke and Clyde.  And Professor Skinner, of course.  Right now, she doesn’t care about Sarah Jane’s warning about the woods.  Anything to get her mind off the possibility of her best friend leaving.
***
Molly finds the boys.  It was hard not to with all the noise they were making, sticks snapping under their feet and Clyde’s mouth.
“I hate woods.  The city is civilization.  This is The Land That Time Forgot.”
“Good, I found you.”
They jump.  “What are you doing here?” Clyde asks.
Molly shrugs.  “Wanted to help.  Lucy’s asleep, so not much to do in there.”  She doesn’t want to tell them the real reason.  It’s not her place.  And it would make it more real.
They buy it.  Luke begins to speak.  “So, why didn’t we just stay on the edge, like you said?”
“Because Clyde is known for his honesty,” Molly snarks, rolling her eyes.  “I mean, Luke, it’s like you said.  Clyde wants to be Lucy’s hero because he fancies her.”
Clyde narrows his eyes.  He’s about to protest when they hear the snap of a twig.  As all three of them were standing still, they knew it wasn’t one of them.  They glance around.
“What was that?” Clyde asks.
“Maybe it was Professor Skinner,” Luke suggests.
Molly isn’t so sure.
“I can feel the hair on the back of my neck standing on end,” admits Clyde.
You’re not the only one, Molly thinks.
“It’s strange.  So can I,” Luke concurs.
“It’s not strange, Luke,” Molly tells him.  “It’s a completely normal reaction.  We’re aware that we’re being watched and possibly in danger.”  Her eyes scan the woods, looking for anything out of place.
“Well, I’m one hundred percent creeped out to the max,” Clyde tells them.
“Or it could be the result of an electrostatic field,” Luke reasons.  “There’s something here, guys.  Right here.”
A chill goes down Molly’s spine.  She whirls around.
“Where?”
Something lands a few feet in front of her with a loud thump, causing a cloud of dirt to fly into the air.  That’s when the boys turn.
“Guys, there it is.”
It’s not completely invisible.  Molly can make out a humanoid shape.
“Maybe it can’t see us.”
Molly holds back the urge to roll her eyes at Clyde.  “He’s staring at us, you idiot.”
As Clyde wonders why the invisible being hasn’t attacked them yet, Molly sees it tilt its head.
“It’s studying us.”
No shit, Luke, Molly mentally bites back.
Then the alien turns off its cloaking device.  It’s covered in blue armor with a dome-like helmet, that reminds Molly of Juggernaut from the X-Men comics.  He cocks his gun at them.
“We gonna run now?” Molly yells.
They run for their lives.
***
Molly trips over a downed tree, falling into a dip into the underbrush.  Luke stops to help her up.  Clyde looks behind them.  The alien is still in pursuit.  They can hear him coming.  Molly waves Luke off.  She’s bruised but fine.
We need to hide, she mouths.  Down here.
The trio scramble under the branches of dead trees.  They cover their mouths.  As scared and tired as they are, they know they need to keep quiet.  They can’t let him find them.  They watch as their alien pursuer ventures past them, going further into the woods.  Clyde sneaks out from their hiding spot.
Gone, he mouths.
Luke and Molly join him.  They try to head back the way they came.
***
After walking through the woods for a while, Luke speaks up.  “This is wrong.  We didn’t come this way.”
Molly didn’t know.  They had gotten so turned around just trying to stay alive.
Clyde spots a path.  “We follow that.  It’s bound to lead to the road.  Come on.”  Before he could take another step, Clyde slams into something.  He falls onto the ground.  “What was that?”
Luke feels the back of his neck.  “I can feel the hair on the back of my neck again.  There’s something here that’s cloaked.”
Molly looks at Luke.  “Could be his spaceship.”
Luke feels the air in front of him.  They see a shimmer.  Clyde stands up and feels around the same area.  As they touch the invisible wall, it ripples like the surface of water.
“Uh, maybe we should go find Sarah Jane now and tell her?” Molly points out.
Luke nods.  “You’re right.”  He takes out his phone.
***
As luck would have it, Clyde was right.  They made it to the road.  As the reception was a bit non-existent in the woods of Goblin’s Copse, Luke had to wait until they reached the road to call his mother.  Molly is exhausted.  The adrenaline has left her.  She finally feels the pain of the cuts, scrapes, and bruises she received while being chased.  She sits down by the side of the road, while the boys stay standing.
It wasn’t much longer before Sarah Jane’s car came roaring up to them.  The car screeches to a stop in front of them.  Molly can feel the anger pouring off Sarah Jane before she even gets out of the car.  It makes her stomach churn, much like those moments when she can feel how angry and disappointed her dad gets at her sometimes.  Clyde flinches as Sarah Jane slams the car door closed.
“I thought I told you two to stay out of the woods,” Sarah Jane barks at the boys.
“I know,” Luke says.  “But you didn’t really think we would.”
Clyde shoots him a look.  Molly closes her eyes.  Idiot.
Sarah Jane sighs.  “No, of course not.  That’s why I’m angry.  Angry at myself.”  Something about that statement didn’t ring quite true to Molly, but she didn’t have much time to ponder it.  Sarah Jane turns to her.  “And you, young lady, what were you thinking?  You left without a word to me or Maria.  You had us worried.  Then you go off in the woods with the boys.  I expected them to disobey me like that.  But you?”
Hot tears start forming in Molly’s eyes.  She couldn’t bear to look at Sarah Jane anymore.  The churning in her stomach got worse.   She tunes out as Sarah Jane asks the boys what they found.
Maria lags behind as Luke and Clyde start leading Sarah Jane into the woods.  She walks up to Molly, holding her hand out.  “Can I help you up?”
Molly just looks at her, tears rolling down her cheeks.
Maria can’t take it.  “Please, just talk to me.  I know this isn’t what we want.  I don’t want to leave either.  But I want what’s best for my dad.  Can’t you be excited for me?  Sarah Jane isn’t that angry with the boys.  She’s angry at me.  I can’t have you angry at me too!”
Molly wipes away her tears.  With her free hand, she takes Maria’s.  “I’m not angry at you.  I’m angry at the situation.  I understand wanting what makes your dad happy, even if it sucks for you.”
Maria gives her a small smile.  It’s a start.  She helps Molly up.  “Thank you.”
Molly pulls her to the woods.  “Thank me later.  Come on.  We’ve got to catch up with them.  There was an alien chasing us out here.  I think we found his ship.”

I'm actually attempting to write. But once I got over the last hurdle, I found another. I don't know how old Molly should be when Emily comes into the picture. I know she's a toddler, but how many months?
Or should I think of it in terms of how soon should Emily join the Yates family?

How is Emily's bedroom decorated?
For much of their lives, Emily and Molly shared a room. In the cramped San Francisco apartment, they slept in bunk beds. Molly had the top bunk, but Emily would occasionally steal her pillows. There was a small dresser against the wall to the left of their bedroom door. To the right of their door, was a cubby shelf. They had a little table with two chairs, a bookshelf filled with books, and two baskets of their toys. To counteract the white walls and furniture, David made sure the girls' room had splashes of bright colors with pillows and a pink rug.
Tumblr media
The girls had twin beds in the small Peckham, London flat. The beds met in one corner of the room. They chose the colors for their sides of the room. Emily chose blue and Molly went with pink. Emily's bed was closest to the closet. When you entered their bedroom, there was a small dresser to the right of the door, on which their TV sat. They put glow-in-the-dark stars on the ceiling.
Tumblr media
It wasn't until they moved to Ealing that the girls had their own rooms. Emily has a loft bed with a desk. There are two full bookshelves. She has posters, wall decals, and figures that refer to science and some of her favorite books and TV shows on display.

What is, or was, Emily's favorite subject in school?
Is she quiet or outgoing?
What hobby does she enjoy the most?
Emily's favorite subjects are probably science, English/reading, and technology/computer classes. She is also good at math.
Emily, like Molly, is quiet and shy until you get to know her. However, she is more reserved and less prone to outbursts than her older sister.
Emily likes reading, skating, listening to music, baking, and playing video games. Her favorite hobbies are probably reading or learning about new technology.
Thank you for asking! Your questions made me think and I'm looking forward to integrating these into the story.
