Jack Merridew's life has always seemed to be more difficult than others, and in need of a coping mechanism, he joined his middle school's choir and fell in love. After meeting Ralph Allabach in 8th grade English, Jack's love for music branched out as he learned guitar. The two are inseparable! They rehearsed in the Allabach's garage with Ralph's little sister, Raven, almost every day. As time passed, Jack and Ralph developed different music tastes and eventually ended up not playing together as often as they used to. Deciding that rock n roll is the way to go, Jack grows out his hair and makes his band "Lord of the Flies." Consisting of mutual friends Roger, Maurice, Sam and himself, the band is a hit!!

I actually have a bunch of ideas for fake crossover statements I've been collecting. Here's my favorites:

“Make A Lot Of Noise”: statement of Sid Phillips regarding his childhood toys. (Toy Story, Stranger); "Make a Lot of Noise" is the song from the Toy Story Musical (yes, that's an official thing) about the toys getting revenge on Sid.

“The Serpent in the Garden”: statement of Warlock Dowling regarding his atypical upbringing. (Good Omens, Stranger/Spiral?); the title here refers to Crowley's origins as the Snake in the Garden of Eden and how he (serpent) and Aziraphale (gardener) raised Warlock, but I'm not sure what Entity "I was raised by two uncanny not-humans who turned out to have thought I was the Antichrist" falls under.

“Ill Met By Moonlight”: statement of Alissa Denton regarding the last performance of Misty Moore. (Dimension 20: The Unsleeping City, Stranger); this would be about "Broadway Brawl," where Misty kills the real Titania while playing her during her rejuvenation ritual and then uses the glamour from the performance to be reborn as Rowan Berry.

“Skulk”: Statement of Steve Bergensten regarding the creature he encountered during a caving expedition. (Minecraft, Dark); Bergensten is Jeb's surname, and skulk is the stuff that summons The Warden.

“The White Whale”: Statement of “The Mariner” regarding how he murdered his stepfather. (The Mariner’s Revenge Song, Hunt/Buried); title is a Moby Dick reference, of course.

“The Entire Circus”: Statement of Gog-Agog regarding why you should be Gog-Agog too! (KSBD, Corruption); title is a reference to the meme "You are not a clown, you are the entire circus," because Gog-Agog is clown-themed.

“Treasure Hunt”: Statement of Stanley Yelnats regarding his imprisonment in a correctionary boot camp. (Holes, Buried)

“Shadow Puppet”: Statement of Lena Sabrewing regarding her troubled relationship with her aunt. (Ducktales 2017, Web); title refers to Lena being a living shadow who was emotionally, then later physically puppeted by her aunt in shadow form, and ultimately possessed.

“Fly Me To The Moon”: Statement of Donald Duck regarding his sister’s disappearance in space. (Ducktales 2017, Vast); title references Della's ill-fated joyride that ended with her being stranded on the moon, and Vast seemed appropriate given how her need for adventure led her to go higher and higher until she vanished into the huge void of space.

“Worldbreaker”: Statement of Gyro Gearloose regarding a recurring problem with his creations. (Ducktales 2017, Extinction); Worldbreaker is the name of the program Akita used to force BOYD to be evil, and one could theorize that Gyro's persistent belief that all of his creations turned evil (because of what happened with BOYD) is what caused him to keep making evil robots in a self-fulfilling prophecy spiral.

“To Have And To Hold”: Statement of Twilight Sparkle regarding her brother’s marriage. (MLP:FIM, Stranger/Corruption); title is from the traditional marriage vow, with this specific line summing up Chrysalis' intentions for Shining Armor.

“Urban Legend”: Statement of Emma-May Dixon regarding the local tourist trap in Gravity Falls. (Gravity Falls, Stranger); title is a play on the cryptids and folklore Stanley uses in the Mystery Shack, and Emma-May Dixon is McGucket's ex-wife.

“See No Evil”: Statement of Tate McGucket regarding his fear of memory loss. (Gravity Falls, Spiral); title refers to the Society of the Blind Eye's goals, and I figured someone who saw his dad progressively lose his memories and sanity without knowing why would develop some hangups about that, especially with an amnesia-inducing cult (that his dad created) running around.

“War Games”: Statement of Jack Merridew, regarding his time stranded on an island as a child. (Lord of the Flies, Slaughter)

“Dollhouse”: Statement of Coraline Jones regarding what was behind a door in her new apartment. (Coraline, Stranger/Web)

“God Save The Queen”: Statement of Julie Jenkins, regarding the murders at her high school prom. (The Ballad of Sara Berry, Slaughter); Julie Jenkins is the girl who was beating Sara out for Prom Queen because people were pity voting for her, and the only target of Sara's rampage to survive.

“Silent Assassin”: Statement of Pam Kingsley, regarding a string of inexplicable assassinations she reported on. (Hitman, Hunt); Silent Assassin is a recurring challenge in Hitman and the subtitle of the second game, and Pam Kingsley is a recurring news anchor character.

“God, That’s Good”: Statement of Tobias Ragg regarding his employment in a meat pie shop. (Sweeney Todd, Flesh); "God, That's Good" is the song Toby sings advertising Ms. Lovett's cannibal pies.

“Future Imperfect”: Statement of Arven Violet regarding the results of his father’s research. (Pokemon Violet, Extinction)

“This Be The Verse”: Statement of Beatrice Baudelaire Jr. regarding her a series of unfortunate events her guardians experienced. (ASOUE, Desolation); "This be the verse" is the poem Count Olaf recites as he dies: "Man hands on misery to man / It deepens like a coastal shelf. / Get out as early as you can / and don't have any kids yourself.

“Mayhem”: Statement of Marla Singer regarding her boyfriend’s involvement in terrorism. (Fight Club, Desolation); title refers to "Project Mayhem."

Aster: “Mom? Can I ask you something? It’s kind of important.”

His sister was gonna kill him for this, but Aster, the cautious one of the pair, just didn’t feel comfortable with her plan. He wanted to find their real dad as much as she did, but he wasn’t sure that messing around with magic lamps and genies was the best way to go about it. What if something went wrong?

Coward, a little voice inside his head (that wasn’t Nova’s) whispered. He suddenly felt ashamed, but it was too late to back out now.

Kate: “Of course, honey, you can ask me anything. What’s up?”

Aster: “Well, um...it’s about the magic lamp. Mom, is it really true? There’s a Genie inside it and everything?”

Kate felt as though a lump of ice had settled in the pit of her stomach. 

Kate: “How did you find out about that?!” 

The question was superfluous; she knew how, and Aster’s guilty look confirmed it.

Aster: “Sorry, we just heard you thinking about it, we didn’t mean to - you’re not mad, are you?”

Hoo boy.

Not for the first time, Kate was confronted with her children’s strangeness. She had trained herself to guard her thoughts around them, as Leann had suggested, although not well enough, it seemed. It was that damned lamp and the Genie’s insinuations - they had distracted her!

Kate: “No, I’m not mad. You...haven’t messed around with it, have you?!”

The lamp was inside a cardboard box in the shed and the shed was locked, but an enterprising child could find their way to it.

Aster: “Nooo! We don’t even know where it is! Nova wants to find it, though.”

At least they hadn’t plucked that bit out of her mind.

Kate: “Aster, this isn’t a toy! I don’t know how it works, but I do know it could be very dangerous!”

Aster: “I know, it’s just...we thought...maybe we could get the Genie to take us to meet our dad. Y’know, the Pollination Technician?”

Kate: “Oh, honey...look, I’ll try to find out more about it. Ask Mr Merridew, if there’s anyone in town who knows about magical artefacts, it’s him. But in the meantime, please promise me you won’t go looking for it on your own!”

Aster: “Okay.”

She would need to have a serious conversation with them both, Kate thought that evening as she tucked her sleeping son into bed. About the lamp, but also about their desire to find out more about where they came from which seemed to be eating them up. 

She would move the lamp into the safebox straight away, the one with the combination lock, where she kept all dangerous building tools and materials. Better safe than sorry.

Serie purtroppo inedita in italiano, ma Lynsay Sands è una garanzia se cercate trame diverse dal solito, e ironiche. Poi anche lei ha libri più o meno riusciti. Ad esempio il secondo libro di questa serie non è un gran che, perchè in parte riprende la trama del primo libro dal punto di vista della sorella e del migliore amico dei protagonisti di quel romanzo, ma il primo libro è veramente spassoso se non cercate verosimiglianza storica o logica in un romance. Con cadaveri occultati messi sottoghiaccio, scambio di identità tra gemelli e rocamboleschi piani destinati a fallire è veramente diverso dai soliti romance. E queste tre sorelle sono proprio atipiche, specie Christiana.

La serie racconta la storia di tre sorelle, principesse di un piccolo stato germanico e vittime di un misterioso complotto. Rimaste orfane di madre in tenera età, e ora di padre (una di loro è anche rimasta vedova) le tre ragazze fuggono da loro paese e si rifugiano in Inghilterra da loro zio, il Duca di Olympia.E��� chiaro che il Duca è un uomo con le mani in pasta, e una spia che coordina altre spie, come ad esempio la governante che aveva dato alle ragazze e che si è rivelata un prezioso alleato….ma non è chiaro esattamente chi siano i buoni e chi i cattivi e chi sia dietro agli attentati alla vita delle tre ragazze.Così il Duca decide di nascondere le ragazze, travestite da uomini, presso degli uomini importanti ignari della loro identità, che però spera finiranno per…interessarsi a loro e proteggerle….Come potete ben capire dalla trama principale questi libri non sono privi di difetti, anzi. Il fatto di travestire tre principesse giovani e belle da uomini senza che nessuno si accorga dell'inganno, non è molto plausibile come anche il fatto che i piani strampalati del duca sui loro futuri matrimoni funzionino così bene….ma ci sono anche buoni spunti e idee e i personaggi, alcuni in particolare riescono a catturare il lettore.

I still have a ton of Pat of Silver Bush quotes and thoughts to get through, but I started rereading Mistress Pat today. Discussion of fatphobia behind the cut! What a fun time!

I don't like the episode with Uncle Tom and his old sweetheart. I possibly hate it. It could definitely be worse -- she could be unpleasant or lazy in addition to being fat -- but the fact that her appearance is so immediately and strongly portrayed as hilarious, and Uncle Tom as someone to be pitied, is bad. It's really uncomfortable.

"You were...thinner...then," said Uncle Tom slowly. Mrs. Merridew shook a pudgy finger at him. "We've both changed. You look a good deal older, Tom. But never mind...at heart we're still just as young as ever, aren't we, honey boy?"

Ultimately she ends up rejecting him a second time because he looks older, and she's never portrayed as a bad person: she insists on helping with housework during her stay, she's charming and chatty and undeniably knowledgeable... though that too is made ridiculous by the way she never stops talking. But she's a good guest, likes the animals and even the picky Gentleman Tom likes her. Everyone likes her. But the text cannot stop poking at her size. It can't stop underscoring the ridiculousness of the situation, and doesn't seem to sympathize with her as it keeps highlighting how disappointed Uncle Tom is at not being able to rekindle his past romance and find love, and how much she likes a snack.

As they emerged from the bush the shadow of a fat woman was silhouetted on the kitchen blind. "Look at it," said Uncle Tom with a hollow groan. "I never imagined any one could change so much, Patsy. Patsy..." there was a break in Uncle Tom's voice... "I...I wish I had never seen her old, Patsy."

Sir??? You are 59. You've never noticed time work before? You live with your sisters, do they still look like teenagers to you?? The woman has children and grandchildren and you think she'll still have a perfect figure?? IT'S BEEN FORTY YEARS MY MAN AND YOU ARE BALDING

I'm glad Merle rejects him, and does it kindly. It had to happen for it to resolve neatly. I'm glad that she's confident, but I wish LMM hadn't made that confidence seem so ridiculous. I'm glad Uncle Tom isn't heartbroken by her leaving.

And I don't know that it could have been handled respectfully and still get resolved neatly. Would it be better if she immediately caught his shock upon seeing her, knew he was disappointed and didn't want her anymore because she was old and fat, and had to get through the planned length of the visit anyway, being a good guest, friendly and helpful, talking incessantly out of nerves and to be good entertainment, because if there's one thing she knows how to do it's entertain an audience? Dreading the humiliation if he didn't propose after all, and planning how best to respond if he did, in a way that preserved both their dignity, because she's a good-hearted woman who can maturely handle her own disappointment? Wishing he could still love her?

More realistic, but not better. There's no way to make this better, and it doesn't improve the book. Cut the storyline entirely.

December 15, 2019 | Throughout Anne Gracie’s The Merridew Sisters Series are mentions of Egypt, etc., especially in the last book, The Perfect Kiss (2007). With personalities to balance each other out and the same goal, these bands are an instant hit! Will these teens be able to handle the stresses of performing?
