@annevbonny yeah so first of all there's the overt framing issue that this whole idea rests on the premise that eliminating fatness is both possible and good, as though like. fat people haven't existed prior to the ~industrial revolution~ lol
more granularly this theory relies on misinterpreting the causes for the link between poverty and fatness (which is real---they are correlated) so that fatness can be configured as a failure of eating choices and urban design, meaning ofc that the 'solution' to this problem is more socially hygienic, monitored, controlled communities where everybody has been properly educated into the proper affective enjoyment of spinach and bike riding, and no one is fat anymore and the labour force lives for longer and generates more value for employers
in truth one of the biggest mediating factors in the poverty-body weight link is food insecurity, because intermittent access to food tends to result in periods of under-nourishment followed by periods of compensatory eating with corresponding weight regain/overshoot (this is typical of weight trajectories in anyone refeeding after a period of starvation or under-eating, for any reason). so this is all to say that the suggestion that fatness is caused by access to 'unhealthy foods' is not only off base but extremely harmful; food insecurity is rampant globally. what people need is consistent access to food, and more of it!
and [loud obvious disclaimer voice] although i absolutely agree that food justice means access to a variety of foods with a variety of nutrient profiles, access to any calories at all is always better than access to none or too few. which is to say, there aren't 'healthy' or 'unhealthy' foods in isolation (all foods can belong in a varied, sufficient diet) and this is a billion times more true when we are talking about people struggling to consume enough calories in the first place.
relatedly, proponents of the 'obesogenic environment' theory often invoke the idea of 'hyperpalatable foods' or 'food addiction'---different ways of saying that people 'overeat' 'junk food' because it's too tasty (often with the bonus techno-conspiricism of "they engineer it that way"). again it's this idea that the problem is people eating the 'wrong' foods, now because the foods themselves are exerting some inexorable chemical pull over them.
this is inane for multiple reasons including the failure to deal with access issues and the fact that people who routinely, reliably eat enough in non-restrictive patterns (between food insecurity and encouragement to deliberately diet/restrict, this is very few people) don't even tend to 'overeat' energy-dense demonised foods in the first place. ie, there is no need to proscribe or limit 'junk food' or 'fast food' or 'empty calories' or whatever nonsense euphemism; again the solution to nutritionally unbalanced diets is to guarantee everyone access to sufficient food and a variety of different foods (and to stop encouraging the sorts of moralising food taboos that make certain foods 'out of bounds' and therefore more likely to provoke a subjective sense of loss of control in the first place lol)
but tbc, when i say "the solution to nutritionally unbalanced diets"---because these certainly can and do exist, particularly (again) amongst people subjected to food insecurity---i am NOT saying "the solution to fatness" because fatness is not something that will ever be eliminated from the human population. and here again we circle back to one of the fundamental fears that animates the 'obesogenic environment' myth, which is that fatness is a medical threat to the race/nation/national future. which is of course blatant biopolitics and is relying on massive assumptions about the health status of fat and thin people that are simply not borne out in the data, and that misinterpret the relationship between fatness and illness (for example, the extent to which weight stigma prevents fat people from receiving medical care, or the role of 'metabolic syndrome' in causing weight gain, rather than the other way around).
people are fat for many reasons, including "their bodies just look like that"; fatness is neither a disease in itself nor inherently indicative of ill health, nor is it eradicable anyway (and fundamentally, while all people should have access to health-protective social and economic conditions, health is not something that people 'owe' to anyone else anyway)
the 'obesogenic environment' is a liberal technocratic fantasy---a world in which fatness is a problem of individual consumption and social engineering, and is to be eliminated by clever policy and personal responsibility. it assumes your health is 1) directly caused and indicated by your weight, 2) something you owe to the capitalist state as part of the bargain that is 'citizenship', and 3) something you can learn to control if only you are properly educated by the medical authorities on the rules of nutrition (and secondarily exercise) science. it's a factual misinterpretation of everything we know about weight, health, diet, and wealth, and it fundamentally serves as a defense of the existing economic order: the problem isn't that capitalism structurally does not provide sufficient access to resources for any but the capitalist class---no, we just need a nicer and more functional capitalism where labourers have a greengrocer in the neighbourhood, because this is a discourse incapable of grappling with the material realities of food production and consumption, and instead reliant on configuring them in terms of affectivity ('food addiction') or knowledge (the idea that food-insecure people need to be more educated about nutrition)
there are some additional aspects here obviously like the idea that exercising more would make people thin (similar issues to the food arguments, physical activity can be great but the reasons people do or don't do it are actually complex and related to things like work schedules and exercise doesn't guarantee thinness in the first place) or fearmongering about 'endocrine disruptors' (real, but are extremely ill-defined as a category and are often just a way to appeal to ideas of 'naturalness' and the vague yet pressing harms of 'chemicals', and which are also not shown to single-handedly 'cause' fatness, a normal state of existence for the human body) but this is most often an argument about food ime.

Are you alright love?🥺 Read your tags, just checking if you want to talk about it? If not, no problem, just sending you alllll the hugs in the world💞💗💜
Tumblr media
Hello, Liyah, my light, how are you? 🥰
Thx for checking on me, it means the world 🥺🤍.
And yeah, I'm fine now. It's just a frustrating story.
I used to have very strong acne when I was young. Like, right as puberty hit me at 11 or 12. And I LOVED to pop them. Because I was a kid and the popping was very satisfying. The problem was: you should NEVER pop them because it can spread germs and stuff all over yourself and it can infect and it just generally makes everything worse.
So, when I was 14, we consulted to find a solution so that my stupid ass wouldn't destroy my face. The solution found was that I should go on birth control. A VERY STRONG ONE. The thing we didn't know, besides all the very dangerous side effects of birth control that that pill in specific increased, was that I (or anyone really) was only supposed, for safety reasons, to take it for 6 months. Instead, I took it for 5 FUCKING YEARS. And my doctor DID NOT FLINCH in letting me take it for that long. Naturally, that had consequences.
So 2 years ago, I started having really strong periods with incredibly painful moments, especially on my right ovary. Of course, I went to the doctor. She was very difficult to talk to, did not fucking want to test me for anything or request any exams. It took her me NOT HAVING A PERIOD FOR 5 FUCKING MONTHS to finally accept something was deeply wrong and test me.
Unsurprisingly, I had a cyst on my right ovary. Her solution? "Let it pass, it'll go away". Spoiler: it didn't. After 1 year suffering and complaining while nothing being done, I checked a different doctor who figured out the cause was probably my birth control. Shocking, I know. So she told me to get out of birth control. The thing is: you can't just stop taking it. Especially one that's so strong. But because the pills were prescribed by my public doctor I needed her approval for it and also for her to support me through the process.
Needless to say, she wasn't happy and didn't want to "because what if I got pregnant". Ah, yes, because that was TOTALLY the first order of business in that moment when I had been almost 7 months without a period and was suffering from immense pain because of a literal ball of evil inside me. Sure, yeah, that makes sense. So I threatened her with a lawsuit. Hence, I am now out of birth control. And, consequentially, out of cyst. It vanished in 2 months and my period's back to normal (and way less heavy and painful).
I also asked her to check my fertility (not that I care cause I don't ever want to be pregnant but just because I wanted to make sure so that my complaint about her was accurate) and the exams came out positive, I can still get pregnant and all seems normal and regulated.
But it was a struggle. It was more than a year of pain because people prescribe and recommend birth control for no reason or in incorrect ways. I'm not a woman, of course, but society def sees it that way and I can't help but just correlate this with how careless society and the medical industry are towards women. It's like it doesn't matter what happens to them. Especially when the beneficiary here (because heteronormativity, of course) are men, who can have unprotected sex and not father a child, regardless if the woman has a fucking cyst and feels like dying for a week every month or not. Absolutely heartless. Women are worth nothing in our world.
Anyways... Hugs to you too and thx for always being so nice and caring for my issues. It truly means a lot. 🥰💜 I hope you know that if you ever need someone to vent to or just to talk to I'm here for you as well. All the love 💜💜💜.

changing the sex marker on your id without even having to medically transition is so crazy like what do you mean there is a risk of „outing“. you haven’t even transitioned. its more confusing when you are clearly a feminine man/a masculine woman and then it says female/male on your id respectively. one of the dumbest things the trans movement is successfully pushing for.
i feel like homelessness, the sex industry and the actual discrimination, violence and harrassment gender non conforming people face (whether trans or not) and the resulting mental issues should be the focus of trans activism? you know, the actual marginalisation? im all for advocating housing and shelter projects and general accommodations for trans/gender dysphoric people and special work protection etc but instead the focus is on changing your birth certificate, denying material reality/sanctioning people who insist that sex matters, „misgendering“ and bashing feminism that is centering women, giving kids puberty blockers and generally promoting transitioning not as a last resort but the ultimate solution to gender dysphoria even though homophobia, body dysmorphia and misogyny as well as porn are the biggest driving forces.
no wonder liberal feminists love trans activism, it is just as superficial, useless and even harmful to the group they claim to advocate for. this shows especially in how they tend to support and defend the sex industry despite both women and gay and trans identified men being overrepresented and harmed, individually and as a group.

Buddy Daddies - Episode 12 - SPOILERS! - Rei’s Injury and His Hobbies - A Deeper Look
I was thinking last night about Rei and his arm, about hobbies, and also about accessibility, and how those tend to overlap in regards to the stereotypically gendered spaces of said hobbies.
Tumblr media
Specifically, Rei’s gaming hobby vs. Kazuki’s cooking hobby. Gaming has tons of people of all ages, genders, and sexes that play them. But the sphere itself is still largely male first and male dominated. There is also a lot of focus placed on skill level, and there are plenty of “gamers” out there that look down on people who play games on easy level or who struggle with certain aspects of games, saying stuff like “get gud!” or whatever.
I love games! I enjoy playing them, but I am definitely more of a casual gamer and I enjoy playing games solo (Rei seemed to as well, or playing with Miri, he never seemed to engage in online game play - that was likely too risky).
My mother enjoyed playing games ever now and again too. She was a very casual gamer, basically just liking classic stuff like Mario and Donkey Kong or even arcade games like Pac-Man, etc. She didn’t play much as new gaming systems came out like Playstation and N64, but she did used to have the option to play a game if she wanted to. Until about 10 years ago.
She had a stroke (due to medication for her heart condition), and lost movement on the left side of her body. She has practically all of her face movement back and her left leg works well enough, but her left arm and hand has very little to no movement. The option and ability to play video games became extremely limited, basically just to the Mario Jump game or whatever on mobile.
The gaming industry has an inaccessibility problem. There are some customized controllers out there for single hand game play usage, but the quality of them vary a lot and they don’t seem to be all that good. Many games are crafted with single hand game play in mind (or even as an available option either).
Of course, Rei was younger than my mom when he self-inflicted that injury on himself, and he was trained in a lot of areas and skills that might make it easier for him to recover a bit more arm movement and adapt more to being able to play some games with only one hand (I know there are some gamers out there who have learned how to do this!). But, generally speaking, the gaming hobby is a seemingly male dominated hobby space that lacks a lot in accessibility options.
Games being more of an actual hobby, as in for entertainment purposes solely, rather than a mixture of hobby and survival skill like cooking (Kazuki’s hobby) is, also likely plays an aspect in the difference between ease of entry, use, and accessibility that you find within the cooking hobby sphere.
Don’t get me wrong, there is elitism here in the sense of people looking down on others who use pre-made food or who do this or that, but there are a lot of gadgets and tools that can help with cooking. My mom can’t really play video games anymore, but she can still cook.
Cooking, while on a professional and culinary level has a lot of connection to famous male cooks, is still seen as a hobby and overall seemingly female dominated space. But it is also a space more welcoming to accessibility. Using guides, like recipes, are common and accepted instead of looked down upon (like in gaming), and so on and so forth.
Tumblr media
In the 10 year time skip, we see that Rei is cooking. How much he cooks and if he really cooks anything outside of his signature dish is unknown to us. Does he still play games at all on any level? We don’t know and can’t really say. Not with the info we’ve seen and what has been given to us.
The fact that his amount of game play in the day was already being limited before the incident with his arm (1 hour per day) makes me think it was likely a hobby that he likely wasn’t engaging in with as much as he started learning and obtaining new skills (like cleaning and cooking).
There may be other hobbies that he picked up over the years as well too, but really does make sense to me that he would start engaging more with cooking as well. Since it is a hobby and skill that is more accommodating to him now.
Also, I’m only speaking from second-hand experience (my mother’s experiences with things like video games and cooking and the like), if you have your own experiences with something like this are okay with sharing or talking about it - please feel free to!

Hiii! Gosh, I love your work SO MUCH. You recently mentioned in an answer to someone that you have ADHD and because of that, you have lots of rituals for your work in order to stay focused. May I ask what your routine is? I have struggled for years and years as a working artist to control or harness my adhd, and I would love to hear what works for you!! Thank you so much for even reading this :)))
Hi there!! Thank you so much. ♥
I'm probably a terrible person to give advice, because I absolutely do NOT have a handle on my ADHD. I often feel like I'm drowning in it, as I'm sure a lot of other people in the same situation can commiserate with. A lot of my issues are exacerbated by my agoraphobia and anxiety, but I won't go too into that stuff because I am not really in a place to talk about that aspect of my life so much. I do think I've become more aware of it as I have gotten older and am definitely better at managing it than I was when I was younger. Also to start off, I'm not medicated for it.
First and foremost, I tend to need to overstimulate myself in order to get down to painting, though this is only so effective. I play really loud, very noisy music when I work. Angelspit, Combichrist, The Gazette, etc. Heavy electronic, industrial, nu metal kind of stuff. It helps drown out my thoughts so I can focus on painting. I need to Not Think to be able to paint. I have to already know I'm in flow state on something and really into it if I'm going to be playing mellower stuff.
I also like to play youtube videos or shows on things I'm currently fixated on. Like I'll watch nothing but videos on Welsh folklore or horse training or whatever the hell. I really struggle with listening to audiobooks or podcasts because they aren't engaging enough.
I have parental controls on my computer set up so that I can block out any distracting websites, however this is really not super helpful because I have to keep social media open at all times as it's part of my job to manage those things. It does help some though. It might work for you! They make browser extensions for it.
I try to keep momentum on pieces. I can't let a piece sit for more than a few days, or I know it's time to bin it and give up. I either hyperfixate on a painting until it's done, or it's not good enough and it's going to be like an anchor dragging my momentum down. The second I feel momentum waning I know I need to make a change. I've made huge changes to how I take commissions in order to help me with this, as this is my biggest struggle. I hate sending updates on things, waiting for emails, painting things I'm not super invested in, etc. I recognize that I am incredibly blessed/lucky to be in a position to be a little pickier about the work I take on and how I take it. But I do firmly believe in general that a commission based artist should try to make sure they are doing work they enjoy and not just slogging away on something that they don't vibe with at all. That's good advice for anyone, but I do think that us folk with ADHD tend to feel burnout and artblock harder. I know when I have artblock literally NOTHING can get me to paint, so that's why momentum is so important.
I also try to recognize things that I know are going to trigger me into avoiding what I need to do for the day, or causing me to spiral. For example, if I know I need to make a phone call I try to do that first if at all possible, otherwise I am going to end up not getting anything done for the next 6 hours. If I know I'm going to have to have to leave the house for an appointment or something scheduled, I typically just let that day be a wash and don't plan any work for it. I end up physically ill when I have something I have to go out and do (like going to some appointment or even something small like going to pick something up off of FB marketplace) so I try to just Avoid That, but if I can't I will just clear my schedule for the day.
I try to maximize my Good Days by minimizing things that trigger my procrastination/lack of motivation/distractions. But when I have bad days I just try not to beat myself up about it. (Still do, but I'm trying to get better.)
The worst thing is letting a whole day be wasted sitting there, knowing the time is passing. Knowing that there is something you should be doing, but you're not doing it. Knowing that you don't want to be doing that thing, and that you'd rather be playing a game or painting something else. But not doing that either. And before you know it, the sun is setting and you've done no work AND had no fun and it's time for bed. Ugh, I've had so many days like that.
It's important to recognize when that is happening, and to just say "fuck it" and go do the fun thing you want to do instead of toiling for hours in indecision. That's probably bad advice for people who have poor responsibility skills (like actually making sure to get work done on the good days) but I am saying this in good faith. Sometimes when that happens I'll let myself go bake a bunch of bread or obsessively clean a cabinet out so I still feel like I did something that day. Next day, I try to do better.
I don't know if this is helpful at all- I know people with ADHD have a lot of different experiences/tendencies, but this is what helps me. I slipped a lot after my dad's cancer diagnosis several years ago and felt myself really just completely letting go into the ADHD time void because my thoughts and worries were so loud I couldn't drown them out with all the screamo in the world. I started fixating on BG3 really hard near the end, and it's absolutely responsible for me being Okay artistically and emotionally speaking after his passing last month. I think difficult situations can make our symptoms worse, and to an extent we have to ride the wave and be kind to ourselves.
That's perhaps my closing thought- be patient and kind to yourself. Our brains don't really work right but it can be a blessing in that I think the flow state we are capable of is really something otherwordly. So try to identify what helps trigger that in you and foster it.

y’know, I somewhat recall you saying you had your own J&H adaptation, Any fun facts about it itself or J&H? (You give me asks I’ll give you one right back)
Hello, although I only have the 0,1% completed which is like, a summary of eight/nine months of work, I am still very excited to share my little alternative universe; it takes inspiration from many other adaptations, mainly the musical and The Glass Scientists. A lot of things are placeholders for something bigger and completely original, and it's supposed to blend with actual history, meaning that in some way it is historically accurate at some extent, considering I am making extensive researches about the Victorian Era and how it works, with the help of books and articles online. It's quite hard to make it 100% accurate of course, but most Jekyll and Hyde adaptations tend to ignore the fact that this is set in a very specific period of time, and they also tend to focus more on which character sucks the most dicks rather than the original message(s) of the novella. I don't like stories which solely focus on the characters being queer and that's clear, and while LGBTQ+ is included in Apotheosis, that doesn't mean that its the main focus; sure, it is talked about, but it's a part of the story and not the main story. I'm not saying that there should be a correct way of writing adaptations, but rather, that the world should feel alive and dynamic. It is important to establish worldbuilding, and make it a present part of the story, because it SHAPES the characters. I think that whilst you do not need a degree in history to write about J&H or the victorian era, it's important to know at least the basics of how the society worked, the advancements and how they affected society, etc.
Now, the victorian era is quite interesting when it comes to progress. In 1879 the first psychology laboratory was established in Germany, and many other advances in medicine were made, there were the first feminist movements, the two industrial revolutions (second in 1870-1914), what I'm trying to say is that the 19th century is a very important period of our time, at least for eurocentric history, and it's so curious to think how some of these inventions are just two centuries old. Not to mention that by 1888, the Bloody Code (which was how the severe law system of England was called, which focused on social punishment rather than rehabilitation, and the death penalty was very common even for lesser crimes by public execution) had been largely replaced and the death penalty wasn't in use anymore. The world was changing and advancing, and what does that mean for the most conservative classes, especially those who were in high favor to such horrible practices, especially when towards the lower and most despised classes? What does it mean for the poor and ostracized, especially considering the precarious conditions of orphanages, poorhouses and such? Fun fact: this was one of the battles the Crown itself, or rather, Queen Victoria, as a woman and mother, advocated for this, especially when most of its components were children, which were there for various reasons. And what about the emerging middle classes, the so despised noveau nobillty?
Medicine was both revered and feared, because while advancements were made in medical science, many treatments were still primitive and often painful. Additionally, the lack of understanding about germs and proper sanitation led to high mortality rates in hospitals, contributing to a general fear and distrust of medical practices among the public; not to mention that writers were starting to talk about the dangers of medicine (ex. Frankenstein), not to mention that there was the Royal Society that, while it promoted scientific inquiry, knowledge and collaboration, it certainly would've found itself debating about the inclusion of rogue science as effectively, a science.
It is important to know the rest of the hystorical context in which Apotheosis finds itself in, which is that of a very important migration of citizens from Ireland to London (including jews who were fleeing from the pogroms, popular riots against religious minorities which were happening in the Russian Empire), and all of them gathered in the East End of London, where Whitechapel was. It didn't take long for overpopulation (which was already a recurring issue in London) to happen, and for Whitechapel to be redeemed a generally unsafe place like all the other slums, not to mention all the popular disorders and the increase of violent repression from the London Metropolitan Police (ex. Bloody Sunday, which caused at least two deaths, it was basically a manifestation in which the Social Democratic Federation advocated for the end of unemployment, better working conditions and a right to vote for all adult men, other than supporting the Irish National League against the oppression the british were putting them through); it's in this context, that from august-november of 1888, Jack the Ripper terrifies London; 16 are the suspected victims, 5 the ones which had been confirmed, but what if I told you that there is actually more to this tale, when people thought that the Ripper was still amongst them due to how ineffective the police system was at the time, and that some murders associated with him weren't actually the Ripper's doing?
General Lord Glossop, a member of the council which oversees the Royal Society, was found dead after attending the funeral of His Grace, the Bishop of Basingstoke. The body was found the next morning, January 1889; the method of killing appeared to be strangulation as confirmed by trained medical professionals. This was the second governor who happened to die under mysterious circumstances which, were associated with the Ripper itself, as the methods were basically the same. On December 1888, the body of an unidentified underage prostitute and the terribly mutilated corpse of His Grace, the Bishop of Basingstoke, were found in the streets of a London slum, following the same criteria of that which seemed to reflect that of Jack the Ripper.
A member of the Marchetti family, Miss. Maia Marchetti, requested an immediate revision of the autopsies to prove that the killer wasn't Jack The Ripper, but rather another unnamed man who yet had to be caught; she founded her thesis on the two, crucial facts that the murderer had only ever killed members of the aristocracy and one single prostitute for the sole fact that she could've potentially acted as a witness for the case, and there wasn't any fury exhibited towards her corpse, and Thomas Bond (profilier of Jack The Ripper) stated that the Ripper didn't have any anatomical knowledge, and the body appeared to have been mutilated with such a precision which could only belong to those with a great anatomical knowledge, possibly a doctor.
On another note, she had managed to gather ten prostitutes together, who worked in the same zones where the homicides happened, to declare in a written letter to Scotland Yard, that an unknown, violent and unpleasant man with an odd fascination with sadomasochism, had been with them. However, this request was denied, and the letter archieved, until the inspector on the case Scott Newcomen presented the same thesis, thus obtaining a revised autopsy report, this time conducted by Dr. Hastie Lanyon, who brought some interesting discoveries to the table. It is important to note to the case that, the two men had died because of a basilar skull fracture, while the prostitute seemed to truly have died because of strangulation, like it had already been ascertained.
Due to the sheer brutality of the murders and the fact that they involved members of the aristocracy, the media was following this case with great attention, and reporting on it extensively (and of course great pressure was put on the authorities to solve the crimes quickly). Considering that this man happened to principally target members of the upper classes who had a significant role in society, save if there were any eye-witnesses, speculations that these might be murders made for socio-politic reasons committed by a member of the lower classes, seeing the location and circumstances, caused heightened tensions between social classes.
Other members of the council, such as Lady Beaconsfield and Sir Archibald Proops, perished under the same circumstances. An interesting parallelism is that many unreliable letters were sent to Scotland Yard and to Central News Agency; some were written by well-intentioned citizens, providing information towards the capture of the killer; however, the majority of them were deemed useless and consequently ignored. Hundreds of letters were written by people claiming to be the killer, and although this letter wasn't redeemed important and considered a fake, and consequently scrapped, a letter had been signed with the name Edward Hyde. And that's how people started to identify the man. Another letter described the man as someone who had a rancid aura around him, with an area of deformity which couldn't be quite explained by any actual malformations; he had long, golden locks. And unfortunately, these were the only small details which also happened to have been confirmed in the first letters those ten prostitutes wrote. A first rough identi-kit and criminal profile was made by Dr. Hastie Lanyon.
The slayings were the handiwork of a solitary individual, a robust young man aged between eighteen and twenty-three, possessed of a brazen yet unflappable demeanor, bearing obscure physical anomalies difficult to discern. Though yet too youthful to grace the circles of high society, Edward Hyde presented himself in attire befitting a gentleman of esteem, maintaining habitual visits to dens of iniquity, whilst displaying a remarkable acumen in matters anatomical, suggestive of a scholarly pursuit, perhaps that of the medical sciences.
The fact that it was clearly a member of the aristocracy seemingly fell deaf to the ears of the media, which constantly sidetracked the police investigations, misleading them and accusing innocents of being Edward Hyde and fabricating evidence with the excuse of pursuing justice, when in reality this just caused more social disadvantages and disorders which ended with popular uprisings; an interesting phenomenon to note, is that of many women sent romantic letters to those who were suspected to be Edward Hyde, and many visited the locations in which the murders happened in hopes of meeting the Prince of Disaster.

“Why are we even here?”
At the front of the room, The Grizzled Tesraki Bridge officer took his seat. One of his ears was partially mangled, and his dark Ochre fur stuck up in strange places only adding to his grizzled appearance.
In the front row, the young Tesraki that had spoken tapped a foot impatiently against the floor.
The room was filled with new recruits to an asteroid mining cooperation in the Quadinspira galaxy. There were More than a dozen bored looking Tesraki, a Rundi or two and even, to everyone’s surprise, Four Vrul, who had only just begun appearing in the private sector after the downfall of their current government in a surprising coup . The front row also boasted a finnari or two and the odd gibb, though no one expected it to last very long.
“Look, the less questions you ask, the sooner I can get through this presentation.” The grizzled tesraki rubbed his mangled ear, “Corporate has made this a mandatory introduction course, and  for once I tend to agree with that decision.”
“Seems more like a waste of time to me.” Someone muttered.
The grizzled tesraki’s head jerked to the side following the muttered comment, “I may have a bad ear, but that doesn’t mean I’m deaf.” The entire class shifted nervously at the tesraki’s strange behavior. The average Tesraki wasn’t nearly so confrontational.
He crossed his arms again, “have any of you ever met a human.”
There was a pause around the room, but no hands were raised.
The Tesraki snorted, “Than that is exactly why you are here because corporate thinks, rightly, that you should have some warning before you go into an environment with humans. Otherwise, you're setting yourself up to get a mangled ear.” The entire class was paying attention now, trying very hard not to stare at the Tesraki’s mangled ear.
“Did…. did a human….”
The tesraki stomped his foot on the ground in amusement before letting off a sound that was oddly similar to a strangled bark. The group glanced around at each other nervously, “You’ll get used to it.” The tesraki muttered before leaning back against the wall, “No, a human didn’t take my ear off, it got messed up in an industrial accident, and in fact, a human is the only reason I am alive right now. Those bastards have incredible reflexes when they want, but my point is that humans CAN and HAVE done these sorts of things to people, and it is my job to make sure you pay attention to the training we are about to give you.” He turned towards his desk and tapped a button on the tabletop dimming the lights and starting up a holoprojection at the front of the room.
The darkness was momentarily broken by a greenish loading screen before a video flipped on.
The image was of a mostly nondescript brownish gray vrul with prismatic orange eyes sitting calmly at a desk facing the camera. The little banner under the video read.
Dr. Krill Chief of Surgery at Arcadia Noxumber Hospital: Human Anatomy Expert.
The little vrul shifted in his seat, “So, you plan on working with humans.” He nodded slowly to himself, “Well before you begin, I have been asked to give a little presentation to ensure the safety of you and all of your nonhuman colleagues.” The video switched to be replaced by an interactive medical diagram of a human in question, “A human is a sentient omnivorous predator species from the quad inspira galaxy hailing from a class A death planet. Due to the hostility of their home environment, it has become clear, that conflicts in a cross species workplace can become dangerous for any nonhuman worker.”
The diagram flashed, “While humans generally tend to be a docile and social species, capable of getting along with anyone they come in contact with, it is important to remember that the human need for survival is more heavily ingrained in them than it is in us, for this reason, humans may respond violently or unpredictably to situations they find threatening or unfamiliar. Their emotions are prone to changing rapidly and sometimes violently, though this is the exception to the rule.”
The diagram vanished, turning itself back to Dr. krill, “I cannot teach you everything there is to know in this short video, but I Can give you a crash course on some knowledge you are going to want to have if you interact with humans, and that is….” The screen flashed again, and the next image that showed up was a close up headshot of a human.
The image was so startling that some of the students jumped a little in their seats, distrubed by the strange expression, the predatory forward facing eyes, and the rubbery lips pulled back from a wide array of glittering white teeth.
“Human body language, most importantly human facial expressions are going to be some of the most important aspects of your nonverbal interaction with humans. Humans have the most mobile face out of almost any species on earth. There are 43 muscles in the human face alone, and are specifically designed for social communication with other humans. Additionally the enlarged whites of the eyes serve to allow other humans to more easily read their eye movements.
This expression you see here is a common facial expression you might see on humans, and one that you should be pleased to see. The human smile is unique among sentient species and unique among their own primate cousins. The smile actually evolved from the “fear expression.”
Another image flashed on screen, of a very similar expression, lips pulled  back over flashing teeth, but this time the eyes were wider, where in the other image they were somewhat scrunched, causing little wrinkles to radiate from the edges of the eye.
“Historically speaking, the “fear” expression was also used as a sign of submissiveness towards more aggressive members of a human pack. By showing this expression humans might have helped to avoid conflict. Over time this expression evolved somewhat to indicate that the human has friendly intentions, using a “submissive” expression to indicate that they are not intending to be dangerous. Note the differences between the “fear” face and the “smile”. A smile might result in the closing of the eyes, or squinting, which would reduce the functionality of the human’s primary sensory organ, vision, while the fear face opens the eyes wider to allow in more light and increase the usefulness of the primary visual system. I must note here that a human can “Fake” a smile, but if the muscles around the eyes don’t move, it is likely to be a fake smile. Additionally it is important to remember body language in context, a smiling human will open up their body in a submissive way, holding their arms out, exposing their chest, lifting their chin to expose the throat, while an afraid human will curl in on themselves, lift their shoulders, and lower their chin. Additionally, they are likely to lift their hands to protect their face.
Another image appeared on screen, this time it was a similar image, but somehow more unsettling than the first two. The teeth were still showing, but this time they were more obvious, and the eyes, while squinted were turned down so far that the skin around the nose wrinkled, “Smiling or fear should not be confused, with a snarl, which is an aggressive facial expression you are unlikely to see on a human unless they are incredibly angry. You see the teeth are still pulled back, but the lips are pulled thin, the brows are dropped low to protect the eyes, and the muscles around the nose are punched inward. The snarl may be preceded by an angry face.”
The slide flipped again and this time, the image was of a human with its mouth closed, usually full lips were pulled tight into a thin line and almost inverted. The chin was down and the nostrils were flared. The brows were pulled tight together, and the eyes were wide and staring. The room shifted nervously, “It is best to avoid a human if you see this face, lips pulled thin, with such an intense stare. Humans don’t generally tend to hold eye contact for long periods of time. If a human is staring at you with this much intensity, it is often going to be a bad sign, and it is best to move.”
The screen flipped again, to show a row of a few more expressions, “It is best to differentiate human expressions that are happy and angry for your own safety, but here are a few quick examples of other expressions. Disgust”
The screen flashed.
A human with lips pulled back, though the expression was uneven, the head was slightly turned away, and the nose was wrinkled.
“Contempt.”
Eye contact, one side of the mouth pulled up, lips slightly pressed together.
“A human that shows contempt towards you is not necessarily going to be violent, but  it might be best to move departments if you can.”
“Sadness”
Corners of the mouth turned down, eyebrows turned up in the middle instead of down.
“Other than facial expressions, there are a few human vocalizations that may be beneficial for you to hear.”
The room was filled with a sound it was almost impossible to describe, it was like a screech but done in short sharp bursts. Multiple sound clips were played and all the sounds were different, but contained a similar repetitive pattern. It was a strange and unnerving noise to stay the least, “Believe it or not, this is one of the best sounds to hear coming from a human. It's called laughter, and usually means they find something entertaining. If you make a human laugh it's generally considered a god thing, though it can often be used in certain situations to break tension.”
“Those of you with sensitive ears may want to cover them for this next sound, because if you hear it you will likely want to run. This is a human’s warning/distress call and may indicate danger.”
The Tesraki clamped their hands over their ears just in time for the room to be filled with a soul rattling screech that made everyone in the room flinch, and the desks to vibrate. Multiple clips were played, over and over again, terrified screeching like tortured animals, sometimes translation equipement even picked up words.”
“HELP! HELP! HELP ME!” The words devolved into incoherent screaming that left the entire room shaken when it faded,
“Generally indicates fear, or pain, and can be a warning for other social species to leave, or even call for aid. Oddly enough a human will not require a class to learn our facial expressions, as they are incredibly socially intuitive on most occasions. Again I must remind you that humans are not inherently violent, and that aggression only happens rarely, statistically speaking, But I am still eager to caution you.”
The video flashed back to the doctor who was leaning against his desk now, “At all costs it is your mission to make friends with the humans, iIt is extremely beneficial to both parties, and speaking as someone who has many human friends, I am likely in one of the safest locations in the galaxy, so be safe, remember these tips I have given you, and good luck.”

Untitled Wednesday Library Series, Part 134
Last week, I promised 'some real specific information science wonk', which I intend to deliver. Much of my work concerns systematic reviews, which are very popular in health sciences research. There are many reasons for that popularity: the modality is basically pretty good for informing evidence-based medical decision making; they're synthetic, so you don't even have to walk into a healthcare facility to write one; journals like publishing them; they look like low-hanging fruit if you haven't done one. Increasingly, that last point is actually true — there are heaps upon mounds of software vendors, working groups, funders, and libraries full of poorly adjusted yea-sayers (that's me!) sitting around waiting to help glue the things together.
Part of the review process is retrieving approximately every paper ever published about the intended topic. This is difficult in practice — citation databases are fussy things — so it's often prudent to re-use pieces of searches that've already been published. Predictably, there's a whole cottage industry of papers that consist only of pre-validated search strings for popular concepts. It's also difficult in theory — to quote today's feature, 'the ideal search strategy would show high recall and high precision, but there tends to be a trade off between the two, and the relationship typically takes the form of a sigmoid curve.' What's worse, making specific claims about recall outside the lab is several shades of impossible. The problem: those search-strategy-only papers have to prove their performance somehow. The solution, according to these authors? Don't, maybe. Try something easier; it'll probably work alright.
This is both open access and short, for whatever that's worth.
Sampson, M., Zhang, L., Morrison, A., Barrowman, N. J., Clifford, T. J., Platt, R. W., Klassen, T. P., & Moher, D. (2006). An alternative to the hand searching gold standard: validating methodological search filters using relative recall. BMC Medical Research Methodology, 6, 33. https://doi.org/10.1186/1471-2288-6-33
Tumblr media
The How
Credit to a coworker much more seasoned in search validation than I for this one. Although the approach this outlines is common enough nowawadays, I don't know that I'd have gone looking for the paper without a recommendation.
The Text
The authors collect several foregoing examples of what they call relative recall, then call them that, then demonstrate the technique on search results generated by a familiar-in-these-circles (and pre-validated) Highly Sensitive Search Strategy (HSSS) and some custom variants. The gist is that relative recall performs very similarly to what they'd expect from normal recall, and that they suspect similar results should fall out of similar setups. This is a great relief to those of us who were nervous about the alternative.
One of the HSSS variants, which they call the Narrow Boolean Search Strategy (NBSS), represents a surprisingly distinct insight about potential applications. Pretty neat, huh?
The Object
Normally I'd omit this section entirely on grounds of excessive abstraction, but not this time. Two thoughts:
I don't think these tables are an ethical habitat for Gill Sans. Too much breating room, I think. The slightly inconsistent vertical allignment makes it look sick.
QUORUM flowchart, huh? I guess that was the style at the time — PRISMA didn't supercede it until 2009 — but I haven't actually had to look at it much. Absolutely Precambrian.
The Why, Though?
Mostly because I have several projects coming up that rely on both relative recall and NBSSs, but also because the book I was hoping to feature kinda stinks and I can't be bothered.

ive been asked about this in a few different flavors, so uhhh general idea of what my modern au is like, when I write abt a modern setting this is the framework I work from
Cait; Came from an abusive shack in the Irish countryside, ran away from home at a young age. Fell in with a bad fucking crowd. Eventually got enough money from said crowd to get a plane over to 'Merica. Went over to follow her dream of becoming a pro-wrestler. Instead, ended up as a bartender/bouncer for a shitty nightclub above a fightclub of questionable legality. She only occasionally gets to fight in it, but its on her days off. Of which, she has few, and would rather spend resting. She lives in a small, shitty truck camper, but genuinely favors it to her previous living arrangements. Once she kicks her drug addiction, gets a new job at a high-end gym as a trainer. The sense of community is good for her, and she's, surprisingly, a good hypegirl. She eventually gets herself a C-model RV, on the smaller side, but comfy as hell for the right kind of person. Well, Cait's that kind of person. Her main hobby is just exercise, something to keep her physically and mentally busy. After colliding with Danse on corners one too many times, they both said 'fuck it' and just starting planning their morning runs together. Mostly so Danse stopped breaking his nose on Cait's forehead.
Codsworth; British-Indian man who is well known throughout high-end hospitality industries. He's worked at hotels, country clubs, restaurants, designer stores, if there is a position where you move with utmost efficiency and sympathy for the customer, Codsworth has worked it. You walk into the most exclusive businesses in the city, chances are, they've at least heard of him. As he got older, settled down to open his own little Cafe. It's a casual, early-morning affair, and its really just an excuse to have tea and biscuits with people, chat. It's kind of a hole in the wall, off the beaten path, but those who know of it swear on their life for his coffee, tea, and breakfast/brunch. Codsworth himself, when he isn't tending the cafe, can be found feeding the birds in the park, cleaning up litter throughout the town, or tending the public gardens as a volunteer. He lives a quiet, but quaint life, and is always lending an ear, a shoulder, advice, or in some cases, criticism. Always keeps a coffee, quiche, and croissant aside for Piper, Nick, and Preston; his problem children who rarely sleep and always forget to eat.
Curie; A traveling doctor, who travels from hospital to hospital only because she's too competent and revered to not share amongst as many medical institutions as possible. Even the most egotistical doctors cower beneath her. Being corrected or criticized by Dr. Curie Collins is a black mark on any medical professional's record. When she isn't saving lives or scolding a haughty doctor, Curie can be found in a lovely cottage on the bank of the Charles. She grows most of her own food, but if her pantry is filled with strawberry twinkies and Milano cookies, that's her business. She wants to go into psychology and become a therapist, but she doesn't trust her fellow medical doctors enough to leave her patients with them. She frequents Codsworth's cafe, usually in attendance after an all-nighter at work. She's the doctor that partially oversaw Danse's diagnosis and upon learning of the consequences, yanked all the strings she could to get him another job. Wanted to raise hell over his unethical/illegal discharging, but Danse refused. Often has coffee with X, they share stories of their respective doctors and scientists and whatnot being stupid and incompetent.
Danse; raised in foster care alongside Cutler. They joined the military the moment they turned 18. Cutler became a pilot, Danse infantry. Their C.O, Krieg, became an adoptive father to them both. Cutler's helicopter was shot down in the line of duty, and when Danse and his team made it to the wreck, everyone was dead, or doomed to die. Danse mercy-killed Cutler. Krieg died shortly after, across the ocean. Eventually, his superiors wanted him to get a mental exam, which led him to Curie's hospital, where one of her colleagues diagnosed him with the expected PTSD and the unexpected autism. A superior who had bad blood for him leveraged the ASP diagnosis to medically discharge him. Seeing as Danse had literally nothing but his work, and was still reeling from losing his family, this was...not great. Ends up back in Curie's hospital, brought in by Nick, who wasn't even on duty, just drove past a guy on a bridge, looking down at the Charles too long. Danse eventually finds work as a ship mechanic down at the harbor, and moves into an apartment nearby. Sounds cozy, right? No. Theres a dispensery across the street that's constantly filled with hooligans, and the owner keeps slipping flyers under his door.
Deacon; U.S Marshal Service. If you're unfamiliar, he works in witness protection. Wouldn't know it by looking at him, though. He keeps his work very hush-hush. If you're not a coworker, you don't know what he does. He'll even find jobs just to drop them in a week, just for the chaos of it all. Deacon lives in a few different small apartments across Massachusetts, mostly because he hates hotels. The only people likely to ever pick him out are convention, renfaire, or other costume party attendees, or special fx workers. Why is he working in a costuming depart—never mind, he quit again. He lives a life that on the surface, is bizarre and crazy, but at closer look, has some kind of method to the madness. Deacon also has the odd habit of bringing up things about people that he has no reason to know. Divorcing? He knows before anyone else. Pregnant? Knows. Cheating on your spouse? He knows, and whoops, guess who also knows, now! Deacon is buddy to all, friend to none, and enemy to many. Joins Preston's camping trips as a different person every time, and its seriously creeping the dude out. The one time X joined, on a whim, ran through the woods back to his car. Nope. Nope!
Gage; Raised in a crime-infested neighborhood in the south, became a criminal himself. Spent most of his youth doing it, until he and his whole gang got sold out and busted. Gage spent five years in prison, and afterwards, decided other criminals were too fucking stupid and unpredictable to work with anymore. Instead, he turned his eyes to the real life-sucking evil; capitalism. Weaseled his way into working at a theme park, starting as a handyman and somehow ending at manager. The owner, Colter, is a flaming dipshit, and the three assisting managers are cartoonishly evil and/or stupid. He isn't sure he hates this job, because fuck if it ain't entertaining. Colter eventually dies trying to fistfight a mom in the bumper cars arena, electrocuting himself on a faulty wire. Gage lives in a boathouse on the river, despite making the money to live elsewhere. Drives a truck slapped together with gum and recycled tupperware. Has a pet lizard. Keeps to himself. His truck smokes like an active volcano, so he's something of a road cryptid, and often gets pulled over by Preston, since he often has to drive in Preston's area. They've gotten into so many brawls on the side of the road it's become something of a smoke break. It's not even professional or personal. It's just what they do. Sometimes they get lunch after.
Hancock; Came from a rich family, daddy was a senator. A shitty one. Brother is also similarly shitty, and became a landlord. As for Hancock, he raised himself on the other side of the tracks, making a name for himself as a vocal activist and infamous heathen against the establishment. No one has ever been able to arrest him or take him to court, because Johnny became a lawyer. And he's a fucking good one. The only person who can represent himself and consistently win. At some point the local gov gave up trying to shut him down, and focus on just...not pissing him off. When he isn't harassing politicians, Hancock owns a dispensery, though he prefers harder substances. Buddies with MacCready but neither of them remember how they met. Also familiar with Cait, used to go drinking at her bar and fighting in the pit. Less buddies with her, their relationship is more one of them calling the other, and updating on how a trashfire is burning. His gossip girl, if you will. As for Danse...you call the cops on his party, fine. But that fucker had the nerve to correct Hancock when he was quoting a historical figure. But when he Googled, it, big asshole was right. So, its personal now, and Hancock will not rest until he or Danse dies, or Danse gets laid/high and becomes cool.
MacCready; Security guard for a mall. Gets bounced around the different shops/sections, so he's picked up a lot of odd skills, knowledge, and tricks. Can make pretzels good enough to kill God, but also can identify every variety of makeup sold in Sephora. Has never stopped a lifter and never will, and no one has ever mentioned it. The only time he's done his job is if someone is in danger; you're not stabbing the 60 year old Barnes N Noble cashier. You got caught, you give up. Don't fucking attack Ms. Daisy over earrings. Mac hates a sore loser. Eats nothing but whatever is sold in the mall. That dadbod is 60% Panda Express and 40% Orange Julius. Mac has a tiny house in a decent enough neighborhood, by Duncan's school. Lucy died in a car accident, run off the road by a drunk driver. Bobby makes life work, and Duncan is a happy kid, but he's never really...processed anything. Always shaking from anxiety. Employs Piper as his star babysitter, as she works from home. Met her after she interviewed him, reporting on an armed robbery attempt. Hancock is the babysitter only when Piper is busy, because even though he's good with the kid, and Duncan loves his Uncle John, Hancock is not what MacCready considers a...ideal influence...Duncan came home with a fascination with knives one day.
Nick; Detective, obviously. Was kinda...demoted...? After his fiance got killed. Used to handle the biggest cases, but now he's more of a patroler, works the simple disputes. Goes to the less-violent, more cold-cut scenes. The boss thought he could do with a lighter, easier load. Nick kind of hates it, feels really underutilized, but fuck it, it's not that bad. If he were younger, he'd be fuming, but as it stands, he can't complain too much about getting the easy, simply work, that doesn't have him staying up all week. He lives in the Old Town part of the city, likes his scenery vintage. Nick lives simply, until he has a day off. His day off, Nick is getting into all kinds of shit. Maybe its his nature. Maybe its bad luck. He chases purse snatches through sewers. He settles generational family rivalries over a bad cow sale centuries prior. He tears apart apartments to find underwear to prove to a trusting wife her husband is a cheat. Nick finds himself, constantly, in the eye of a batshit storm, but only when he's off duty. He's the kinda guy whose best stories come from his everyday life, rather than his hectic and often surprising/dramatic work. If he isn't working, or getting sucked into chaos, Nick stays home, pours himself a drink of some kind, and relaxes with a good book. Sits on the porch and watches the birds. Feeds the neighborhood cats. Its not often he has downtime, and rarer still that he uses it for anything exciting. Occasionally on the phone with Piper and Preston, tries to provide some old man advice for them. Checks in on Danse occasionally for welfare, just doing his job. His presence makes the party across the street mind their manners.
Piper; English major who landed a good, but difficult job as a journalist for the newspaper. Her life is constantly moving, always hectic, and never chill. Has been arrested more times than Hancock. Has been thrown out of a military base more times than Danse. This frightens Danse and impresses Hancock. Piper keeps her job remote to take care of Nat, basically an octopus, multitasking five different things at any time. Her dad was a firefighter who died when his captain got cold feet and left his team to die, and she's made it her life goal to publicly shame such actions and people. Someone up top fucks up, Piper is screaming it from the rooftops and all of the city will hear. She's a menace in a different way from Hancock, though they've shared a slammer enough times to give tips on various vigilante methods. Piper attends an online class, and often does her work through phone or laptop while running around doing other shit. Watching her is exhausting. She likes her life but can't wait to graduate. Really hates her schooling, but she needs it to do what she wants, so that's how the cookie crumbles. When she gets a chance to relax, she's taking a long bubblebath, and shutting off her phone. It's kind of hard to get a hold of Piper, and even harder to keep her there.
Preston; Forest ranger/trooper. Much of his work is babysitting the populace, rather than dealing with them after they've misbehaved. He's the guy going into the woods to bust illegal bonfire parties, or poachers, that kind of thing. Sometimes he gets road patrol, sometimes he gets desk work. Sometimes he does community work, like seminars and camping trips. Preston doesn't mind his job, very passionate actually, he just kinda...lost all faith in humanity at some point. You see enough people at their worst, that happens. A forest fire broke out a few years back that fucked up a town, started by some shitty rebels without a cause just looking for trouble. He never quite got over the fact that he didn't find the source and stop it in time. He's young enough that he doesn't get that he can't save everything, but old enough to have failed a few times. It's a rough combo. Preston lives near the Charles, close enough to know that Gage definitely isn't certified to have his boathouse or dock it where it is. Considers Gage his mortal enemy whom will die upon his own death. For they exist solely to annoy the other. When he and Gage aren't fighting in a ditch, Preston is either at home, facedown on his floor, or curled up like a crumpled tissue on one of Codsworth's couches, half-heartedly gnawing on a quiche. He's known for falling asleep in odd places all over the city, catching some Z's when he has a second.
X6-88; A security guard for the C.I.T. He wears a suit and sunglasses and always has an earpiece in. His face would shatter should it emote. He's an alumni who graduated from the C.I.T but no one has ever figured out when, or what he majored in. There are theories as to what his name is. He just calls himself by his badge designation. It's a running joke that he's a robot but it stopped being a joke pretty quickly, because honestly? Probably is. X revels in being an engima, and goes out of his way to be mysterious and spooky. During an...incident, at the C.I.T, X worked partially with Deacon, as the latter was handling a witness. X freaked the fuck out of him by immediately recognizing him from several other cases Deacon has worked. X pays attention to local legal proceedings, you see, so he's up to date. Either way, Deacon was approached by a massive breach in security and now lives in fear of the Terminator who's always watching his extremely confidential work. X also works with Preston, occasionally, when dorm parties get too crazy. X doesn't keep to himself, not really, its just that people don't notice him. He's always in the loop. Piper begs him for an interview with anyone in C.I.T. He directs her to the Wikipedia page for the college. If he isn't working or freaking people out, X is cleaning house at local bakeries and confectioners, often with Curie. It's the only time you can see him in public if he isn't working.

Describe your personal ethic as you develop as a nature interpreter. What beliefs do you bring? What responsibilities do you have? What approaches are most suitable for you as an individual?
Hey! For our final blog post, we were asked to write about our personal ethic as we develop as nature interpreters.
I’m currently in my final year of university, and I’m beginning to look for jobs. And for the first time in my life, I’m looking for career jobs, instead of part-time of summer positions. So needless to say I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about what jobs I ideally want, what jobs I’m willing to do, and what jobs I’m not willing to do. Our course readings for this week mentioned a fear of a desk job being a potential motivating factor for pursuing a career related to environmental interpretation. That one did admittedly resonate with me a bit. My last job was more or less of a desk job, where I worked as a research assistant in a lab. And even though, on paper, it was closer to what I want to do as a career, I didn’t enjoy it very much. I missed working in the service industry, I missed the high-energy, social atmosphere, I missed getting to work with my hands and see the results right in front of me. Spending most of my working hours not only indoors, but in a dim lab staring at a laptop just made me irritable. So I’d love to find a job in the sciences that’s more hands-on and active, but I’ve realized I’d happily move away from research if I can’t find a job in that field that lets me move around.
Every week or so I get an email from the university describing job opportunities. It hasn’t been very useful in finding jobs, but it sure has been useful in helping me figure out exactly what place/companies/fields I am not willing to work for. There’s always plenty of decently paying opportunities working for mega-corporations like PepsiCo, and the like, as well as their countless subsidiaries. I know now that I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I worked for a place like that. I would much rather go just about anywhere else, including back to the service industry. I might have a less prestigious career, but I care about having a job that I enjoy doing and that I see as important. During my last job, it was difficult to get up and go to the lab in the morning when I couldn’t really see the effects and importance of the research that was being done. I know that whatever I end up doing, it needs to be relatively active, and even better if I get to spend time outdoors as part of it. As long as I’m still able to spend my free time outside, that much is negotiable.
I wanted to go into more details about my beliefs/motivations/self-assigned responsibilities. First, the rather apparent role of nature in mental health and our current culture around it. Not that I have enough space to go into all of my thoughts on that, but I’d like to include a few of them here. One, on mental health being treated like an individual problem, when it really should be recognized as a systemic one. Even if people admit that it’s systemic, the “solutions” and treatments that are currently popular tend to be highly individual. Take mood-regulating medication, go to eternal therapy, isolate yourself from others in the name of self-improvement. In general, mental health has been both commercialized and capitalized upon. Like I mentioned, I don’t have the adequate space to go through my thoughts on the systemic causes of mental lack-of-wellness. But as I’m sure many of us are aware, spending time outside and spending time with other people (or even both at the same time!) have been shown time and time again to be beneficial to human well-being. Honestly, I don’t think we need more research in that area. We already know, and as much as I like numbers, more statistics aren’t going to save us.
So for me personally, all that means that I don’t want to have a job that drags down the health of other people, or my own. I would love to have a job that helps remove some of the barriers that have been put up between nature and people, which I don’t think should belong in different categories in the first place. But an important caveat for me is that I don’t want my career to be a constant fight. I’m quite tired of war analogies. There’s less of a point in destroying something if there’s nothing better to work towards. I don’t want to dedicate my life to fighting climate change, because I’ll make myself miserable and make everyone around me a little less happy. That’s not to say I don’t care, but I do think that a bunch of sad and lonely people aren’t going to bring about much positive change. Like the video with David Suzuki and Richard Louv mentioned (I think it was Richard Louv who mentioned it), it’s hard to make change if people don’t have any sort of positive idea of a future to look forwards to.
So to summarize as neatly as I can: If I end up doing something related to nature interpretation, I want it to get people excited and help people feel more connected to the world around them.

On the same note as working towards something rather than solely working against, I have a book recommendation for anyone looking for a sci-fi story with a positive outlook: Monk and Robot by Becky Chambers (and its sequel)
Thanks for reading!

🌙🌙| Some Sloth ring headcanons
Sloth is a weird, an anomaly even in Hell.
The majority of demons on the ring are Sleep Paralysis Demons, though there’s a fair share of Baphomets and ones from other rings. For the other Hellborn whose families have been in Sloth for several generations, they’ve clearly been coloured by the weirdness of Sloth.
And Sloth is weird. Politically it is, the entire ring is unionized. There was a problem back in the early 1800s, not too long after the Industrial Revolution on earth, of Hellborn coming to Sloth and exploiting its workforce. The general approach is ‘hey we don’t like that’, and it was a unanimous decision.
Speaking off that, Sloth is run by a council: Belphegor is technically the highest authority, and they meet every six months. The other members include a variety of people, including some Ars Goetia from Sloth, and a variety of the more standard Hellborn. Half of the meeting sis Teri g things up for the next six months, and half making sure everything previously set up is still running. Occasionally emergency meetings are called, as in the case of unionizing.
The ring itself sort of feels like Wonderland. It feels like a dream made real a lot of the time, cobble streets in some areas, flowers that glow, and some regions that seem to alter themselves at whim. Physics tends to go a little funny in some regions.
It rains a lot. Sloth isn’t an aquatic ring, that’s Envy, but the flood drains see a lot of use.
Sloth’s largest industry includes work on Earth, think Astaroth, the Sleep Paralysis Demons, to a lesser extent, the soul jars. But within Hell, Sloth both possesses the primary university (with correspondence courses offered in all the other rings) in Hell, as well as, or perhaps because of, a thriving medical industry. Sloth is where most pharmaceuticals are produced.
Sloth imports quite a lot from the other rings. The most notable of Sloth’s connections with the other Rings come from Envy, and Pride. Belphegor has a remarkably good business relationship with Vox, and so the vast majority of media and a lot of technology is imported.

Y’all do kill trans people though. Maybe it’s not often directly, but you definitely stir up as much hate as possible, push us towards suicide, and try to regulate us out of existance.
I recommend you look up stochastic terrorism.
who is yall? radfems? gender criticals? women? marxist feminists? anyone who doesnt buy into lib gender politics regardless of political goals? conservatives and a specific variety of gender criticals (esp those who do peddle regressive, reactionary politics against trans and gnc people) are not a good representation of radical feminism any way you look at it - even if you wanna criticize purely online spaces of radfems where you will see some weird overlaps - they really do tend to work differently.
there is a conversation to be had wrt right wingers using "feminist" points (often they arent truly feminist if you examine their reasoning closely) as bait to attract more people but you have to think about why this works so fabulously in the first place atm. the current mainstream framework of liberal gender ideology is failing. it doesnt really help trans people, it Especially doesnt help women (which i wont lie, should be reason enough to dismantle it), and it ends up replicating the same old sexist dynamics that harm all of us in the first place. it is completely insane postmodern shit that most people can see right through, and leftists and liberals not only dont rightfully criticise it but instead tend to fully support it (the leftists usually do this despite this benefiting the medical and beauty industry, among others, for some fucking reason). this creates insane amounts of rightful backlash. conservatives are very capable of using that backlash to gain favor with regular people who up until the past few years werent very engaged w gender or feminist politics. and they can see the actual problems popping up w stuff like gender self id, letting children and teens transition, exposing children to content they shouldnt be privvy to under the guise of "inclusivity and diversity" etc. they arent dumb. denying these problems is dumb and tbh, often stems from stupidity and misogyny alike.
and i know what stochastic terrorism is. are you implying radfems specifically engage in it to attack trans people? bc that sounds silly to me. radfems are hilariously badly organized in many developed countries, and when they arent they often have to deal w pretty serious often violent harrassment when organizing in public. and in countries like mine they tend to face serious backlash from the government and from liberal gender ideology weirdos (trans and not) as well as from conservatives. radfems are also not the ones actually killing trans people, if you look at stats that tends to be. yknow. men. a group women in general tend to not have that much influence over.

totally unrelated because i just went on a different train of thought: i think people tend to look at the harm caused by overproduction of or overreliance on a particular tool under capitalism and go "this thing is ontologically bad" and i don't think that is helpful. i'm thinking especially of an article i saw back when i was in my really bad climate despair ocd era that was about how the concrete industry is wasteful and too many concrete construction projects are being greenlit in environmentally bad ways, and the tumblr post i saw this article in was like "this is why i hate concrete. this is why i hate brutalism even because it's all made of evil concrete" and for a while i became convinced concrete was evil and should not exist in a just world and that all the concrete structures i saw around me were a symptom of a poisoned society. which was the ocd talking of course but that is ridiculous. concrete is a massively useful construction tool that has benefited humanity in countless ways, the problem is overuse and overproduction. that is not the fault of concrete, that is the fault of our capitalist society.
you see this kind of faulty rhetoric also with plastic. plastic is also a massively useful material that makes many things possible, especially in the medical field where people's health depends on its application - the waste and pollution it causes are because of its overuse and overproduction under our capitalist society. and even cars are a tool of mobility and independence for many - i'd posit that there are far too many of them in the world right now, and the structuring of infrastructure entirely around them leads to a lot of societal and environmental problems, but despite all the memeing we do out of frustration with this current situation, a car is a tool with many helpful applications that can't be completely replaced by public transportation, and treating them as ontologically evil is kind of focusing on the symptom over the problem. not to sound like someone who has read way more theory than i actually have, but principled marxists should avoid making moralizing generalizations and should focus on materialist critique, innit. the root cause of most of our problems is a mindset of infinite growth and infinite production, not so much the individual outputs (usually).
idk personally i think about this a lot because of my particular brand of mental illness that loves to torment me with sweeping black-and-white moral judgments so i've had to do a lot of thinking on this particular topic but i feel like some other people could stand to think about it a little more

Dear Frank, I would like to obliterate Big Pharma. How could we accomplish this lofty goal together?
I have been thinking about this a lot lately. I am not an expert on pharmaceuticals, but here are some thoughts:
(1) The generic drug industry is pretty healthy and competitive -- it's hard to imagine the FDA approving drugs that don't work well enough to be worth manufacturing at all (or very difficult to imagine), because there will always be companies out there who can beat them in terms of price if they do; thus any regulatory intervention in this area would need to carefully account for the fact that many or most consumers get their prescriptions filled with generics anyway
(2) "Brand name" drugs aren't as much better than generics as people tend to think. For example, here is one NYT article saying that branded statins are only ~5% more effective than generic ones. A few years ago, when I was working on a project involving cancer research, we got quotes from two different pharmacy providers, and found that a 30 day supply of a widely used anticancer medication cost $796 from CVS Caremark, and $84 from Walgreens, which makes you wonder whether the maker of the expensive version has actually done anything other than slap its logo on a bottle full of pills
In general, when doing experiments like this, your expectations should not be "how long does the treatment last," but rather "is it statistically distinguishable from placebo?" If so, then it doesn't matter how cheaply it could be produced.
Therefore, even though Big Pharma seems bad right now, it is unlikely that excessive government regulation of pharma would help anyone except generic drugmakers. And given that there are already many kinds of competition preventing Big Pharma from becoming too powerful, I feel skeptical that further regulation is needed (assuming that governments generally care about saving lives).
But maybe I just haven't thought through what kind of change might fix things? How would you propose fixing this problem?
P.S. One thing that seems relevant is how much money our various government agencies spend on drugs per year, compared to private insurance plans etc., and whether those agencies are responsible for creating new patents themselves or simply distributing current patented products. I've seen talk about paying lower prices for these products, but no discussion of any mechanism by which this happens.
The above discussion may also seem confused, since it suggests that the consumer is irrelevant to what goes on between Big Pharma and the FDA. But while I realize that individuals are powerless against such forces, if we want to make policy changes affecting millions of people, we cannot ignore the actual situation where individual patients find themselves. (We may not be able to solve problems for everyone, but we shouldn't pretend we have solved nothing.)
