Raindrops in the Wind - Chapter 1

A/N: Not Canon or Legends friendly. AU from the very beginning. Bits and pieces from here and there, molded to fit my grand vision, muahahaha *coughs*. Anyway... Chapters will list their individual ratings, work is rated Explicit (18+) for eventual explicit content.

'What have I done?'

The words rang hollow in his ear as he fought with the Jedi that had shown up at his door. He hated the man, truly. He hated that he showed up on Kamino. He hated that he started to ask questions. He hated that he was a Jedi.

He hated Jedi.

It was not supposed to be like this. He was supposed to provide his DNA to the long-necks whenever they needed it and help train their creation. In return he got an unaltered clone. A son. A safe place to raise him. Enough credits to live very comfortably for the rest of his days. And the knowledge that an army was being raised that would destroy the Jedi.

'I should have left well enough alone. I shouldn't have taken that bounty.'

It was a good deal, he thought to himself, the offer that this 'Lord Tyranus' placed before him. He would be stupid to pass it up, and Jango Fett was anything but stupid. It would give him what he always wanted, a son, to carry on his lineage, and a hefty purse full of credits, no questions asked. No, he was not stupid. He knew very well who this 'Lord Tyranus' was that stood before him. It was the very same Jedi that helped bring the defeat of the True Mandalorians, Count Dooku. All Jango truly wanted from the exchange was an unaltered clone that he could raise as a son, and Tyranus quickly agreed.

At the time, Jango didn't know that he and Dooku shared the same end game, the destruction of the Jedi order. All Jango knew was that Dooku was no longer friendly with the order, having abandoned them, publicly declaring their corruption before the galaxy. He figured he could sus out the real reason behind Dooku's job easily enought once he was on Kamino and around others he could manipulate into revealing the truth.

In all honesty, it wasn't very hard at all to figure out much of what was going on. The Kaminoans were ecstatic about the new contract they had scored to provide the Galactic Republic with millions of perfect soldiers. They poked and proded at Jango daily for his DNA and openly discussed his own physical shortcomings like they were no matter at all, as if they were simply ink marks on a piece of flimsi, mistakes that could be erased and fixed with no bearing on the final product. They were open with this being a request from the Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, which made no sense to Jango, as he had been hired by 'Tyranus', who most certaily wasn't Syfo-Dyas – whoever they were. He thought maybe this Jedi was also fed up with the Order, and was looking to make a strike back, but solid information on this Jedi was slim..

In any case, very little of the entire job was making sense to Jango. Why was a former Jedi Master, whether it was Dooku or Sifo-Dyas didn't matter at this point, paying for the creation of a clone army for the very Order and Republic that they abhored?

Jango continued on, day after day, providing DNA to the Kaminoans, gathering trusted allies to begin the training of the clones that were still growing in their tubes, and listening and obtaining information from any corner of Tipoca City he could. He set the Cuy'val Dar to the tasks of creating a sound, well-rounded training regiment, and on an information gathering mission, telling them to “Listen to everything anyone says. Every single word. Kaminoans, humans, anyone else. I don't care if they're talking about the next shipment of Jogan fruit. I want to know every word. Bring it to me.”

Jango spent hours every day, pouring over intelligence reports, but most of what was gathered was mundane. Lama Su had tea alone this afternoon, did you hear that we're supposed to have a break in the rain next week, the butcher is overcharging for nerf again. The every day gossip and gripes of a bored populace stuck on a perpetually wet and miserable planet. But Jango was nothing if not patient. The cloners told him that he should expect to be working with them for decades, so he decided to settle in and be patient. What he wanted to know would come to him. He would hear it directly from one of the longnecks themselves, or one of the Cuy'val Dar would hear it in passing and report it to him. He would know the true reason he was there. He would know the reason for the creation of the clones.

An unreal amount of credits has been pumped into this project, more than he thought was necessary, to be honest. Jango's bank account is overflowing with credits, and he hadn't had to touch a single one. He'd been provided with his own apartment, furnished with everything he requested. His Cuy'val Dar were paid directly by the client, the same as he was, and were paid a hefty premium too. Whispered word through the cloners was that this project was revitalizing their entire industry, allowing them the financial means to work on the perfection of not just his genetic material, but the genetics of hundreds of other species, not all of them sentient. Factories were starting up for the creation of armor and weaponry, the potable food industry was pushing out rations as quickly as they could be rolled down the assembly line, and tech companies were building holopads and coms as fast as they could get the chips and circuitry to do so. And it was all possible by the injection of credits from 'Lord Tyranus'.

He knew, also, that the Kaminoans were planning on “double-dipping” the Republic when the time came, and was nearly certain all the other industries that had already been paid hefty retainer fees would do the same. There was no shame in getting your due, but it was more of the pervasive corruption that Dooku saw that was eating away at the Galactic Republic, everyone had their hands out, pressing for more and more credits from any party they could. He heard the longnecks complaining that the Armorers had already been paid to purchase enough plastoid to manufacture 250,000 full sets of armor and had already received at least half of their full payment for the total manufacturing cost itself, but they had already began sending invoices to Kamino for the purchase of the armor at standard price, as if they were coming out of their own pocket on the project. Whether or not any of it was true was anyone's guess, but the single bit of information he heard from all corners was that the Kaminoans were not going to lose a single credit from this project, no matter who they had to charge for services. He could hardly blame them, their only true industry was cloning, and a project of this magnitude was going to take nearly their entire industry to support it. If anything went wrong, if anyone double charged them and they covered it with just a promise of later pay that never came through it could ruin their entire economy. So the decision was made to pass on the cost of everything to the Republic, in full for each batch ordered, because even with a hefty bankroll the bank could run dry very quickly. If everything went according to plan their cash flow would be enormous, but they were experts in searching out and fixing “problems” and they were not so naive to believe everything would go according to plan.

And so it went. Years passed, clones were trained, bounties were picked up, and Jango's unaltered clone, his son, began to grow into a fine young man - smart, capable, and hopefully well prepared for anything life would throw at him. Jango knew the galaxy was a rough place, and he was determined to make sure Boba had the tools he needed to survive – and survive easily. During his free time he trained him, harder than he trained the clones who would go off to war, running through close combat scenarios, teaching infiltration and stealth tactics, weapons proficiency, common language tutoring, sharpshooting, general maintenance on anything from blasters to air cooling units. Anything that he believed would give Boba a leg up on the competition – and anything to help him stay alive. He would take Boba with him on hunts too, giving him hands-on experience that he just wouldn't get sparring and running through drills.

The most important lesson Jango would gift to Boba was to trust no one but himself and his family, and to always keep his ears and eyes open for anything “strange”. Strange, of course, could have multiple meanings, but Jango trusted that Boba understood the complexities of all the things “strange” could include. Knowledge and information are as good as credits in hand, and in many cases could be much more valuable than beskar itself, buying the owner of said information freedom and power, if it was valuable enough, of course. And on one rather normal day, as normal as it goes on Kamino, anyway, Boba brought Jango some very valuable information.

While Jango tolerated the Kaminoans, as it was unfortunately necessary, Boba didn't really mind them one way or the other, having grown up around them for the entirety of his young life. So when it came time for Boba's yearly checkup during his 9th year, he didn't think twice to let the boy go on his own. The Kaminoans had always accepted his request for non-Kaminoan involvement in his son's healthcare, so they always ensured he was seen by a medical droid. He didn't suspect this year would be different. In any case, Boba knew to deflect any questions and leave if his request wasn't honored. Dislike them though he did, the longnecks never went back on their promises to him. This would make a good, safe, learning experience for Boba, and Jango instructed him to bring back as much as he could remember about everything, to train him in situational awareness and help him learn how to observe without being observed.

Later that day, after he had seen and cleared, Boba was eager to tell Jango about his checkup. He returned to their apartment, his adolescent energy barely contained, itching to run through the door and let his new secret loose, because something strange did happen at this appointment. He was prepared to give his report to Jango, and he was sure his dad would be proud of what he had learned.

“Dad!”, Boba called out, “I need to tell you about my checkup! It's important!” From his seat in the living area Jango raised an eyebrow, watching Boba try and fail to keep from bouncing on the balls of his feet. “C'mere, son, tell me about your checkup.” Boba walked forward, head held high and mischievous glint in his eyes. ”You told me to watch for anything strange. Something strange happened! There was a woman there today. A human woman! Told me she was training!”

“Good job, Boba. Go on then, clean up for dinner. You can tell me everything else then.” Jango watched as Boba's grin grew even wider, before he turned and ran to the 'fresher.

'Well, that is strange', Jango mused to himself, as he began to formulate his plan. It was time to see if he could gain some real information from this new player. Jango was nothing if not patient, and this may be the time for his patience to start paying off.

I’m Julian (aka Roswell), and I’m an 18 year old, neurodivergent, chronically ill, queer trans man with really awful parents and expensive college to deal with!

I recently started college and moved into my dorm (pets not included), and I have basically no money to fund my life with. I'm unable to find work due to the fact that I'm a full-time student, lack reliable transportation, and have conditions that limit the types of job I'd be eligible for. This leaves me with no income to fund my medical (mental, physical, and/or trans related), educational, or general needs.

Both of my parents are abusive, transphobic, and ableist. The consistent exposure to emotional/mental abuse has resulted in me having crippling CPTSD and social anxiety. My mother is the worst offender, and I'm incredibly relieved to be out of her house. However, she is constantly insisting that if I don't stay in touch or don't allow her to visit, I'm "a selfish asshole who will regret ruining a relationship", and even threatens to just track me down on her own (she is in my area often, so this is a legitimate stressor).

I suffer from asthma, tremors and pain in my hands, and chronic headaches, all of which I have been unable to receive viable treatment for. I also have sensory processing disorder and suspected ASD, the latter of which I have been unable to get diagnosed due to my unsafe previous environment.

The yearly cost of the college I'm attending is estimated at around $21,000, and there's no way I'll be able to afford tuition, housing, books, food, medical, and personal expenses.

I enrolled in a payment plan which is primarily covered by financial aid, but I still owe $785 every month. My father is unwilling to help, and I refuse to involve myself with my toxic mother (who would be unable to help financially anyway). I currently only have enough in my bank account to cover two months worth of payments on my own, but that's about it.

Hostile Takeover

Cars puttered along on the crowded city street below him. A thousand myriad flashes of color wove in and out, tiny little lives transpiring like ants far, far beneath the office window. The city stretched out like an infinite horizon for the taking, a territory to behold and take stock of, and--for not the first time--Nobunaga was very pleased with the renovations to his office. The broad, full length windows thrust light across his black walls, the glass and steel and leather furniture gleaming. A bookshelf containing important documents for Azuchi, Inc. rested nearby, a rack of immaculately maintained, ancient katana on display above it.

“Sir.”

Hideyoshi Toyotomi, his Vice President and right-hand man, rapped on the door before coming in. Nobunaga spun in his chair and smiled proudly.

“It looks like a good day today,” Nobunaga commented. “How are the numbers from this morning?”

“Very good, sir.” He unfolded a document and set it on the desk, pulling up a side chair for himself. “The stockholders are pleased. It looks like our canvassing initiative to get more banking customers is going well. Our profit margin is widening nicely.”

“Great. And our brand recognition?”

“We’re holding steady against Uesugi-Takeda, Inc, around 80%.”

That was good news. Nobunaga rocked back in his chair, satisfied. “Any positive news coverage?”

And at that, Hideyoshi paused, a strange crinkle emerging between his brows. “Actually, I wanted to talk to you about that. I know we had spoken about how Time was going to do a bit on banking and customer recognition, correct?”

“Yes?”

“And how we were asked for a comment, so we were thinking we might be featured?”

Nobunaga cocked a brow. “Yes? Get on with it.”

“Well...” And Hideyoshi produced a copy of Time, flipping to the appropriate page. And there, in tiny little fonts, were mentions of both Azuchi Bank and U-T Bank--dwarfed by another, much larger headline: CHATELAINE BANK: SERVING YOUR NEEDS.

“Who is that?” Nobunaga demanded, picking up the article.

“I did a little research. It’s a small, local branch, but they’re getting quite a following. They’ve operated for about two years, now. It looks like their whole ‘thing’ is charity. They offer financial literacy courses for free, assistance to homeless customers needing housing loans, low interest student loan assistance...”

“Interesting.” Nobunaga snapped it shut and tossed it back to Hideyoshi. “They’ll be gone in a year.”

A year later, and Chatelaine Bank was becoming a real thorn in his side.

Twice, local media outlets that had so faithfully covered Azuchi Bank’s yearly charity drive were now bringing attention to the Chatelaine Bank daily offerings. Shareholders were concerned. Nobunaga studied this new rival’s press releases and plans, but always passed them back off to Ieyasu and Mitsunari with barely concealed confusion. “How is this working? Their margins are so tiny they should have tanked by now. They practically invest in high-risk customers.”

“Yes, but that spirit seems to attract customer loyalty by the bushel.” Mitsunari pushed up his glasses with a bright smile. “It’s an admirable mission statement.”

“How about you shut up,” Ieyasu snapped sourly back.

Two years and losing a bidding war for a coveted location to Chatelaine Bank later, and Nobunaga had enough.

“Buy them out.” He shoved the details of their offer to Mitsuhide, who reviewed them with his characteristic dry smile. “Just get this damn nuisance out of my hair.”

They sent off the offer.

It came back marked RETURN TO SENDER, unopened.

Three years and a slice into his customer base later, and Nobunaga was losing his patience. They sent off another offer (after double-checking the address) and it was sent back similarly unopened.

“I’m done with this game,” he snapped, and shot up from his desk. “Hideyoshi.”

“Yes, sir?”

“Get me an appointment with Chatelaine Bank’s CEO.”

“Right away.”

Apparently phone calls worked. They got through to a chipper and infinitely polite secretary who marked him down for around four o’clock (at the same damn location that they’d been sending their offers to, but he did his best to ignore that). Printing off a fresh offer and putting on a new Armani suit, Nobunaga parked his shiny black car by a modest office complex with the CHATELAINE BANK brand stamped across the top. It was hardly state of the art, but he supposed it was still small and worked on very thin profit margins. Presenting his ID to the security guard, he was escorted back into a small waiting room, directly across from the secretary.

“She’ll be right with you, Mr. Takeda,” the lady chirruped.

“I’m not Shingen.” Nobunaga cocked his brow. She flushed red with embarrassment.

“I’m so sorry. Mr. Takeda was here earlier, it was a slip, Mr. Oda. My apologies.”

So U-T Bank was courting them, too? And they’d sent Shingen? Nobunaga crossed his legs and contemplated the bizarre turn of events until a woman stepped out from her office.

“Mr. Oda?”

He stood up immediately, appraising the woman before him. She was quite pretty. Her hair was pulled back into a loose wave at the nape of her neck, a soft grey suit and skirt tailored neatly to her frame. She didn’t look much like an executive--but, then again, he guessed that ‘homey’ was the kind of culture they cultivated here.

“That would be me, Mrs...?” He extended his hand to her and she took it, shaking a lot firmer than he’d expected.

“Most here just call me Mrs. Director.” She smiled at him and backed up, offering the doorway to him. “Please. Coffee?”

“No, thank you. I had some not long ago.” Besides, he liked his a specific way and he doubted they carried his brand. Nobunaga sailed into her office and cast his eyes around, measuring up the woman before him by her things. Nothing much here betrayed her. If she were married, there was no ring, nor were there any photos of herself, children, men, pets... A diploma hung on the wall from a prestigious university. Well, that was something. Most of the furniture was cozy and accepting, more like a formal living room than an office.

“Water, then?” She offered again, settling in behind her desk and crossing her legs.

“No, I’m well accounted for.” Nobunaga sat on the edge of a comfortable chair, setting his paperwork on her desk. “We’ve attempted to reach you a few times, Mrs. Director, to no avail. I hope you realize we’ve noticed in Azuchi Bank that you’ve done quite well for yourself.”

She was smiling at him, but the expression was so steely and edged that he couldn’t make heads or tails of it. “Oh? I’m flattered that you’ve noticed.”

“I’ll be frank. I’m not the sort of man to make idle small talk and dance around something.” He set a hand on the papers and shoved them toward her. She made no move to take it. “We would very much like to propose a merger.”

“Merger?” Her brow flitted almost imperceptibly upwards.

“Yes.”

“You can just say ‘buy-out’.”

Ah. Nobunaga measured her carefully, feeling the atmosphere of the room change. She knew. “I take it you did, in fact, receive our correspondence before.”

“I think I recall something to that effect.” She hedged, and it was so impossibly polite that it made him boil with rage. “Or that might have been the Uesugi-Takeda Bank offers I’m recalling.”

“And you haven’t even looked at the offers?” He struggled to keep his voice level. Of all the impertinent, sarcastic, impossible people to deal with, she was going to be the worst. He just knew it.

“I think Chatelaine Bank is doing quite well on its own.” She tilted her head and stared at him, level, measured, unflappable, and he felt himself frown. “Wouldn’t you say?”

“You’re operating on a shoestring budget,” he started, his calm wavering, “with two other major banks in the same population as you, and nothing more than quaint ideals to advertise for you.”

“Our quaint ideals are what attract our customers.” Her eyes flashed now, that smile vanishing, and Nobunaga nursed the private joy that he’d wiped that infernal expression off her face at last. “We are for the people, by the people, and that is what the people come for. Thirty percent of our customers are switching from Azuchi or U-T Bank, and you both would be well served to realize that. I didn’t get into this business to make a difference, only to turn my work over to someone who would so entirely ruin it to line his pockets.”

“Did you accept my appointment just to insult me?” He snapped at last. “Or to gloat? Either are insufferable traits.”

“I am not the one trying to bully and railroad.”

“As if I’ve been doing any of that.”

“Oh, please.”

They both shot to their feet at once, eyes locked. She stared down at him--and how did she manage that, when she was so much shorter than he?--with utter disdain evident in every pore of her skin.

“Have a good day,” he spat. “Consider the offer.”

With one gentle hand, she took the bundle of paperwork, picked it up, and dropped it in her shredder. “Consider it considered.”

Turning on his heel, Nobunaga stormed out.

History of St. Pachomius a Bishop who Founded Communal Monasticism

Though St. Antony be justly esteemed the institutor of the cenobitic life, or that of religious persons living in community under a certain rule, St. Pachomius was the first who drew up a monastic rule in writing. He was born in Upper Thebais about the year 292, of idolatrous parents, and was educated in their blind superstition, and in the study of the Egyptian sciences. From his infancy, he was meek and modest, and had an aversion to the profane ceremonies used by the infidels in the worship of their idols. Being about twenty years of age, he was pressed into the emperor's troops, probably the tyrant Maximinus, who was master of Egypt from the year 310; and in 312 made great levies to carry on a war against Licinius and Constantine. He was, with several other recruits, put on board a vessel that was falling down the river. They arrived in the evening at Thebes, or Diospolis, the capital of Thebais, a city in which dwelt many Christians. Those true disciples of Christ sought every opportunity of relieving and comforting all that were in distress, and were moved with compassion towards the recruits, who were kept close confined, and very ill-treated. The Christians of this city showed them the same tenderness as if they had been their own children; took all possible care of them, and supplied them liberally with money and necessaries.

Such an uncommon example of disinterested virtue made a great impression on the mind of Pachomius. He inquired who their pious benefactors were, and when he heard that they believed in Jesus Christ the only Son of God, and that in the hope of a reward in the world to come, they labored continually to do good to all mankind, he found kindled in his heart a great love of so holy a law, and an ardent desire of serving the God whom these good men adored. The next day, when he was continuing his journey down the river, the remembrance of this purpose strengthened him to resist a carnal temptation. From his infancy he had been always a lover of chastity and temperance but the example of the Christians had made those virtues appear to him far more amiable, and in a new light.

After the overthrow of Maximinus, his forces were disbanded. Pachomius was no sooner returned home, but he repaired to a town in Thebais, in which there was a Christian church, and there he entered his name among the catechumens, or such as were preparing for baptism; and having gone through the usual course of preliminary instructions and practices with great attention and fervor, he received that sacrament at Chenoboscium, with great sentiments of piety and devotion. From his first acquaintance with our holy faith at Thebes, he had always made this his prayer: "O God, Creator of heaven and earth, cast on me an eye of pity: deliver me from my miseries: teach me the true way of pleasing you, and it shall be the whole employment, and most earnest study of my life to serve you, and to do your will." The perfect sacrifice of his heart to God, was the beginning of his eminent virtue. The grace by which God reigns in a soul, is a treasure infinitely above all price. We must give all to purchase it. To desire it faintly is to undervalue it. He is absolutely disqualified and unfit for so great a blessing, and unworthy ever to receive it, who seeks it by halves, or who does not esteem all other things as dung that he may gain Christ.

When Pachomius was baptized, he began seriously to consider with himself how he should most faithfully fulfil the obligations which he had contracted, and attain to the great end to which he aspired. There is danger even in fervor itself. It is often an artifice of the devil to make a novice undertake too much at first, and run indiscreetly beyond his strength. If the sails gather too much wind, the vessel is driven ahead, falls on some rock and splits. Eagerness is a symptom of secret passion, not of true virtue, where it is wilful and impatient at advice. Pachomius was far from so dangerous a disposition, because his desire was pure, therefore his first care was to find a skilful conductor.

Hearing that a venerable old man named Palemon, served God in the desert in great perfection, he sought him out, and with great earnestness begged to live under his direction. The hermit having set before him the difficulties and austerities of his way of life, which several had already attempted in vain to follow, advised him to make a trial of his strength and fervor in some monastery; and, to give him a sketch of the difficulties he had to encounter in the life he aspired to, he added: "Consider, my son, that my diet is only bread and salt: I drink no wine, use no oil, watch one half of the night, spending that time in singing psalms or in meditating on the holy scriptures, and sometimes pass the whole night without sleeping." Pachomius was amazed at this account, but not discouraged. He thought himself able to undertake every thing that might be a means to render his soul pleasing to God, and readily promised to observe whatever Palemon should think fit to enjoin him; who thereupon admitted him into his cell, and gave him the monastic habit. Pachomius was by his example enabled to bear solitude, and an acquaintance with himself. They sometimes repeated together the psalter, at other times they exercised themselves in manual labors (which they accompanied with interior prayer,) with a view to their own subsistence and the relief of the poor. Pachomius prayed above all things, for perfect purity of heart, that being disengaged from all secret attachment to creatures, he might love God with all his affections. And to destroy the very roots of all inordinate passions, it was his first study to obtain the most profound humility, and perfect patience and meekness. He prayed often with his arms stretched out in the form of a cross; which posture was then much used in the church. He was in the beginning often drowsy at the night office. Palemon used to rouse him, and say: "Labor and watch, my dear Pachomius, lest the enemy overthrow you and ruin all your endeavors." Against this weakness and temptation he enjoined him, on such occasions, to carry sand from one place to another, till his drowsiness was overcome. By this means the novice strengthened himself in the habit of watching. Whatever instructions he read or heard, he immediately endeavored fervently to reduce to practice.

One Easter-day Palemon bade the disciple prepare a dinner for that great festival. Pachomius took a little oil, and mixed it with the salt, which he pounded small, and added a few wild herbs, which they were to eat with their bread. The holy old man having made his prayer, came to table; but at the sight of the oil he struck himself on the forehead, and said, with tears: "My Saviour was crucified, and shall I indulge myself so far as to eat oil?" Nor could he be prevailed upon to taste it.

Pachomius used sometimes to go into a vast uninhabited desert, on the banks of the Nile, called Tabenna, in the diocese of Tentyra, a city between the Great and Little Diospolis. While he was there one day in prayer, he heard a voice which commanded him to build a monastery in that place, in which he should receive those who should be sent by God to serve him faithfully. He received, about the same time, from an angel who appeared to him, certain instructions relating to a monastic life.. Pachomius going back to Palemon, imparted to him this vision; and both of them coming to Tabenna, built there a little cell towards the year 325, about twenty years after St. Antony had founded his first monastery. After a short time, Palemon returned to his former dwelling, having promised his disciple a yearly visit, but he died soon after, and is honored in the Roman Martyrology on the 11th of January.

Pachomius received first his own eldest brother John, and after his death many others, so that he enlarged his house; and the number of his monks in a short time amounted to a hundred. Their clothing was of rough linen; that of St. Pachomius himself often haircloth. He passed fifteen years without ever lying down, taking his short rest sitting on a stone. He even grudged himself the least time which he allowed to necessary sleep, because he wished he could have been able to employ all his moments in the actual exercises of divine love. From the time of his conversion he never ate a full meal. By his rule, the fasts and tasks of work were proportioned to every one's strength; though all are together in one common refectory, in silence, with their cowl or hood drawn over their heads, that they might not see one another at their meals. Their habit was a tunic of white linen without sleeves, with a cowl of the same stuff; they wore on their shoulders a white goatskin, called a Melotes. They received the holy communion on the first and last days of every week. Novices were tried with great severity before they were admitted to the habit, the taking of which was then deemed the monastic profession, and attended with the vows. St. Pachomius preferred none of his monks to holy orders, and his monasteries were often served by priests from abroad, though he admitted priests, when any presented themselves, to the habit, and he employed them in the functions of their ministry. All his monks were occupied in various kinds of manual labor: no moment was allowed for idleness. The saint, with the greatest care, comforted and served the sick himself. Silence was so strictly observed at Tabenna, that a monk, who wanted any thing necessary, was only to ask for it by signs. In going from one place to another, the monks were ordered always to meditate on some passage of the holy scripture, and sing psalms at their work. The sacrifice of the mass was offered for every monk that died, as we read in the life of St. Pachomius. His rule was translated into Latin by St. Jerome, and is still extant. He received the sickly and weak, rejecting none for the want of corporal strength, being desirous to conduct to heaven all souls which had fervor to walk in the paths of perfection. He built six other monasteries in Thebias, not far asunder, and from the year 336, chose often to reside in that of Pabau, or Pau, near Thebes, in its territory, though not far from Tabenna, situated in the neighboring province of Diospolis, also in Thebais. Pabau became a more numerous and more famous monastery than Tabenna itself. By the advice of Serapion, bishop of Tentyra, he built a church in a village for the benefit of the poor shepherds, in which for some time he performed the office of Lector, reading to the people the word of God with admirable fervor; in which function he appeared rather like an angel than a man. He converted many infidels, and zealously opposed the Arians, but could never be induced by his bishop to receive the holy order of priesthood. In 333, he was favored with a visit of St. Athanasius at Tabenna. His sister, at a certain time, came to his monastery desiring to see him; but he sent her word at the gate, that no woman could be allowed to enter his enclosure, and that she ought to be satisfied with hearing that he was alive. However, it being her desire to embrace a religious state, he built her a nunnery on the other side of the Nile, which was soon filled with holy virgins. St. Pachomius going one day to Pane, one of his monasteries, met the funeral procession of a tepid monk deceased. Knowing the wretched state in which he died and to strike a terror into the slothful, he forbade his monks to proceed in singing psalms, and ordered the clothes which covered the corpse to be burnt, saying: "Honors could only increase his torments; but the ignominy with which his body was treated, might move God to show more mercy to his soul; for God forgives some sins not only in this world, but also in the next." When the procurator of the house had sold the mats at market at a higher price than the saint had bid him, he ordered him to carry back the money to the buyers, and chastised him for his avarice.

Among many miracles wrought by him, the author of his life assures us, that though he had never learned the Greek or Latin tongues, he sometimes miraculously spoke them; he cured the sick and persons possessed by devils with blessed oil. But he often told sick or distressed persons, that their sickness or affliction was an effect of the divine goodness in their behalf; and he only prayed for their temporal comfort, with this clause or condition, if it should not prove hurtful to their souls. His dearest disciple, St. Theodorus, who after his death succeeded him in the government of his monasteries, was afflicted with a perpetual headache. St. Pachomius, when desired by some of the brethren to pray for his health, answered: "Though abstinence and prayer be of great merit, yet sickness, suffered with patience, is of much greater." He chiefly begged of God the spiritual health of the souls of his disciples and others, and took every opportunity to curb and heal their passions, especially that of pride. One day a certain monk having doubled his diligence at work, and made two mats instead of one, set them where St. Pachomius might see them. The saint perceiving the snare, said, "This brother hath taken a great deal of pains from morning till night, to give his work to the devil." And, to cure his vanity by humiliations, he enjoined him, by way of penance, to keep his cell fire months, with no other allowance than a little bread, salt, and water. A young man named Sylvanus; who had been an actor on the stage, entered the monastery of St. Pachomius with the view of doing penance, but led for some time an undisciplined life, often transgressing the rules of the house, and still fond of entertaining himself and others with buffooneries. The man of God endeavored to make him sensible of his danger by charitable remonstrances, and also employed his more potent arms of prayer, sighs, and tears, for his poor soul. Though for some time he found his endeavors fruitless, he did not desist on that account; and having one day represented to this impenitent sinner, in a very pathetic manner, the dreadful judgments which threaten those that mock God, the divine grace touching the heart of Sylvanus, he from that moment began, to lead a life of great edification to the rest of the brethren; and being moved with the most feeling sentiments of compunction, he never failed, wheresoever he was, and howsoever employed, to bewail with bitterness his past misdemeanors. When others entreated him to moderate the floods of his tears, "Ah," said he, "how can I help weeping, when I consider the wretchedness of my past life, and that by my sloth I have profaned what was most sacred? I have reason to fear lest the earth should open under my feet, and swallow me up, as it did Dathan and Abiron. Oh! suffer me to labor with ever-flowing fountains of tears, to expiate my innumerable sins. I ought, if I could, even to pour forth this wretched soul of mine in mourning; it would be all too little for my offences." In these sentiments of contrition he made so "real progress in virtue, that the holy abbot proposed him as a model of humility to the rest; and when, after eight years spent in this penitential course, God had called him to himself by a holy death, St. Pachomius was assured by a revelation, that his soul was presented by angels a most agreeable sacrifice to Christ. The saint was favored with a spirit of prophecy, and with great grief foretold the decay of monastic fervor in his order in succeeding ages. In 348 he was cited before a council of bishops at Latopolis, to answer certain matters laid to his charge. He justified himself against the calumniators, but in such a manner that the whole council admired his extraordinary humility. The same year, God afflicted his monasteries with a pestilence, which swept off a hundred monks. The saint himself fell sick, and during forty days suffered a painful distemper with incredible patience and cheerfulness, discovering a great interior joy at the approach of the end of his earthly pilgrimage. In his last moments he exhorted his monks to fervor, and having armed himself with the sign of the cross, resigned his happy soul into the hands of his Creator in the fifty-seventh year of his age. He lived to see in his different monasteries seven thousand monks. His order subsisted in the cast till the eleventh century: for Anselm, bishop of Havelburgh, writes, that he saw five hundred monks of this institute in a monastery at Constantinople. St. Pachomius formed his disciples to so eminent a degree of perfection chiefly by his own fervent spirit and example; for he always appeared the first, the most exact, and the most fervent, in all the exercises of the community. To the fervor and watchfulness of the superior it was owing that in so numerous a community discipline was observed with astonishing regularity, as Palladius and Cassian observe. The former says that they ate with their cowl drawn so as to hide the greatest part of their faces, and with their eyes cast down, never looking at one another. Many contented themselves with taking a very few mouthfuls of bread and oil, or of such like dish; others of pottage only. So great was the silence that reigned among them while every one followed his employment, that in the midst of so great a multitude; a person seemed to be in a solitude. Cassian tells us, that the more numerous the monastery was, the more perfect and rigorous was regular observance of discipline, and all constantly obeyed their superior more readily than a single person is found to do in other places. Nothing so much weakens the fervor of inferiors as the example of a superior who easily allows himself exemptions or dispensations in the rule. The relaxation of monastic discipline is often owing to no other cause.
