Phobia ☤ Alexios
twelve - first do no harm
masterlist
“Be strong, saith my heart; I am a soldier; I have seen worse sights than this.”
Fate decrees two kindred souls from two different empires will find one another, and the spear shall be made whole again.
ZEUS UNLEASHES HIS wrath upon the morning sky in a flash of white light followed by the roaring crackle of thunder. In the wake of Zeus' anger, the Hyades beckon the assuaging pitter-patter of raindrops. The two somnolent travelers break and pack their small camp in the downpour.
They've ridden since daybreak through inclement weather and the approaching gates of Argos paired with slivers of blue sky are a welcome sight. They leave Phobos to rest at the gatehouse stables. "Follow me," Irene says, glancing over her shoulder. Finding Hippokrates' clinic would be easy even for a person who has never seen Argos before. All one had to do is follow those who were sick or injured.
Scores of sick and wounded -both soldiers and civilians- are waiting to be seen by Hippokrates. Others have no room in the main clinic and lay beneath tarpaulins, shielded from the wind and rain. Irene has never seen this many waiting patients before. Several novice healers tend to patients, but Hippokrates is not among them. Among the apprentices is Sostratos –he received his initial instruction under Theophilus in Athens with Irene before departing to seek greater knowledge.
A beldame is confronting Sostratos about something –her croaking voice is both hushed and raised. "Bitter old crone," Irene remarks as the Priestess of Hera leaves the clinic in haste, pushing past her and the Eagle Bearer.
The apprentice shifts his attention to Irene and Alexios, and his trepidatious expression fades, slipping back into a more aplomb composure. He maneuvers through the patients and greets Irene and her companion with a friendly smile. "Chrysis believes Hippokrates methods anger the gods and has accused him of impiety," he confides.
"We need to speak to him. Where is he?" Irene questions, looking around the crowded clinic.
"Near the Cave of Pan," Sostratos answers. Hippokrates had left several days ago to set up a clinic to treat those the Sanctuary of Asklepios had refused. Alexios and Irene exchange looks –they both know where they must go next. The princess thanks Sostratos and follows the Eagle Bearer back to the gatehouse stables.
ATOP A HILL to the southwest of the Heraion of Argos people are gathered before the entrance to one of Pan's caves. Alexios pulls back on Phobos' reins as they set up the winding road –passing a throng of weary travelers. "I thought they were exaggerating when they said people came from all over to see Hippokrates," he comments. Irene glances back at him and shakes her head. She has heard stories of people traveling from Egypt to seek out the famed physician's help.
The princess stops Alexios before he can interrupt the physician's description of the sacred disease and his proposed remedy. Hippokrates does not speak of the god's ill-will, but of impoverishment -proper meals and rest can help cure those not yet beyond his ability to save. A far cry from what the priests and priestesses would tell the sick. "Challenging traditions," Alexios notes, crossing his arms, "you must be Hippokrates."
"Yes," the physician answers, vexed by the interruption. "I am also very busy."
"We won't take you away from your patients for long," Irene amends.
Upon hearing the familiar voice, Hippokrates turns from his workstation, disbelief overtakes his consternation. "Irene!" He greets. She pushes forward the wrapped parcel from the Argos clinic and he accepts the supplies and tools with an appreciative nod. "What brings you here?" He inquires. The physician knows Irene is not here for sickness. She's perhaps the only person he has ever met that has never even caught a mild case of the sniffles. Their last encounter had been by chance, and he'd stitched a wound beneath her arm closed.
Irene glances over her shoulder at the Eagle Bearer. "Alexios seeks your help."
The physician glances at the misthios, eyes darting over him to find signs of illness or injury -he finds none. "He doesn't look unwell," Hippokrates notes, gaze lingering on the scars wrapping around his arm. "More like one of Phidias' sculptures come to life." Irene hides a faint smile, unable to keep her eyes from straying back to Alexios –it wouldn't be hard to believe he'd been carved from marble.
"I'm looking for a Spartan woman," Alexios explains. "My mother," he's quick to add, "she would have come to you a long time ago with an injured baby. I was told you may have helped her."
Hippokrates shakes his head and turns back to his workbench. His mind is burdened with the woes of his patients, and he cannot spare the time to recall every person who had ever sought his help. "Maybe the priests at the Sanctuary can help," he suggests, eager to return to his studies and patients, "they keep detailed records of all those who pass through."
The princess steps up next to Alexios, her hand brushing against his. "We've traveled a long way to find you, friend-"
"As do my patients," he interjects. "They need me." The physician sighs, leaning forward on the wobbling wooden table. "My notes were taken," he admits, turning back to look at the misthios. "If you retrieve them I will help you find what you seek." An Athenian commander had taken the notes –claiming his soldiers were more important than innocent civilians. Hippokrates could remember most of what he had written, but some finer details that slipped his busy mind.
Alexios leaves in search of the physician's notes in Fort Tiryns, but Irene elects to stay with the physician and his patients. "How can I help?" She inquires. Despite her prowess for violence, the princess has a natural affinity for the art of healing and medicine. Hippokrates will not let a spare set of practiced hands be wasted.
"I need a poultice for fever," he tells her, "if you wouldn't mind lending a hand." Irene smiles and goes to work, grinding white willow, elder and yarrow together with rose oil. Kneeling, Irene smooths a portion of the paste over a patient's forehead and lays a cut fig leaf over it. Next, she goes to the child the physician is tending, repeating the same process.
"The mercenary?" Hippokrates asks, curious to know why she was traveling with such unscrupulous company.
She glances down at the fevered girl –nose red and lips cracked. War and disease do not discriminate between the innocent and guilty. "I want to help him find his mother," the princess avows –just because she has no family does not mean others should face the same fate. Irene lays her hand on the girl's cheek and takes a deep breath. A heavy moment of silence passes and the girl's eyes open –a mix of sage and hazel. Her small hands are no longer clammy and the fever that had doomed her to an early grave recedes.
The physician sits back, astonished. "Are you Persephone?" The girl asks in a meek voice. Irene shakes her head and before she can speak a relieved mother is rushing to embrace her daughter. Irene rises and looks into her palms. Hippokrates follows her, filled with questions –though he supposes some are best left unanswered.
Alexios returns with another physician from the fort who claims to have memorized the notes before they were burned during the last battle. Their arrival comes too late for one man, but Hippokrates makes good on his promise. He tells Alexios about the night his mother came with a broken babe in her arms. He had still been young and such feats were beyond his experience. He had told Myrrine to seek help at the Sanctuary.
SHE GOES TO the temple while Alexios seeks out the priests –something innate is calling her there. The temple is void of worshippers and she strides toward the statue of Asklepios, passing plinths of ailing clay body parts and painted images of serpents. Irene approaches a twisted staff held up on a pedestal at the feet of the God of Medicine. It calls to her and though the voice in her head is that of a stranger's, there is something innately familiar about it –as though she has heard it before in dreams. Iron and bronze are cast to look like a crooked branch, a single silver snake curls around the top of the staff, its eyes piercing green jewels.
Her fingertips almost brush the relic when a priest comes to stand next to her. "The Staff of Asklepios," he interposes, and Irene quickly pulls her hand back. "Last wielded by a traitor," the priest vilifies, hands clasped behind his back.
The princess glances at the grey-haired priest –brows set in a deep furrow. "Apollonides of Kos." He speaks the name like a curse and the color seeps away from Irene's face. My father. "They say he is who taught Hippokrates before betraying Greece for Persia."
Her gaze shifts from the priest back to the staff. "What was Apollonides like?" Irene asks. It's the first time anyone has willingly mentioned his name and it fills her with hope.
"He was-" the old priest starts but then thinks twice about revealing anything, else Chrysis will have his tongue like Mydon. They've been ordered not to speak of the traitor or to any eagle-bearing mercenaries and their accomplices. "I don't know," he says too quickly and harshly for the words to be true. Hope slips through her fingers and her heart drops to her stomach. "I never met him," the priest lies, absconding from the temple.
Dejected and alone once more, Irene steps up to the relic and wraps her hand around the staff –all initial hesitancy gone. The emerald eyes of the serpent begin to glow and a surge of power and pain wash over her –flooding her veins as a tidal wave of white heat. Irene.
Strange markings illuminate the back of her hands, creeping up her arms in smooth arcs and lines. It is yours, the voice whispers, take it. She relinquishes the staff with a sharp cry and stumbles before collapsing to the white marble floor, shaking. The markings fade as quickly as they appeared and emerald serpentine eyes still look down upon her, though the light in them begins fading.
Alexios finds her on the floor in the temple, clearly perturbed. He kneels next to her and lays his hand on her shoulder. There's a distant, empty look in her eyes. "Are you all right?" Irene glances at him and nods –an unconvincing gesture. "We should leave quickly," he breathes, helping her to stand. Only then does she notice the blood on his bracers and hands –none of it his own.

Racist Violence in Washington
Tumblr media
A handful of riders from the 3rd Cavalry arriving in Washington, likely on Tuesday the 22nd.
July 19 1919, Washington--On Friday July 18, a nineteen-year old female employee of the Bureau of Engraving claimed that two black men ran into her on the street and attempted to take her umbrella; she quickly ran away and police quickly arrested a suspect.  When, late on the 19th, that suspect was released due to lack of evidence, white servicemen (who were especially livid as the woman was married to a naval aviator) began to riot, attacking black passersby, and driving through black neighborhoods in "terror cars", shooting indiscriminately out the windows.
Navy Secretary Josephus Daniels (from North Carolina) took no action against the sailors.  Assistant Secretary Franklin Delano Roosevelt, though he apparently "wish[ed] quicker action had been taken to stop" the violence, was soon joking about it, telling a Harvard classmate "With your experience in handling Africans in Arkansas, I think you had better come up here and take charge of the police force." As violence continued over the subsequent days, the military (which could have stepped in at any time in the Federal district, which at the time had little self-rule) did nothing.  Daniels urged calm, while Secretary of War Baker claimed to have little authority over the situation as many of the rioting men had been recently discharged from the armed services.  Wilson had left the city for a brief vacation late on the 19th, and the District Commissioner (a Wilson appointee) refused to ask for military assistance.
Rioting continued over the next two days.  On Monday, black residents began to fight back, a departure from previous outbreaks of racial violence.  A terror car strafed the Navy Hospital before it was stopped and its occupants arrested.  A black teenager, Carrie Maine Johnson, shot and killed a police officer who broke down the door to her bedroom when searching for a likely non-existent sniper.  William Laney shot into a would-be lynch mob that was pursuing him, killing one; he would be charged with manslaughter and falsely accused of being a violent revolutionary.  Thurgood Marshall later recounted the travails of his father, Willie, who was particularly light-skinned: "The Negroes would run one place, the white folks were running the other.  So he was running back and forth.  Wherever he went, he was wrong."
On Tuesday afternoon, Wilson (who had called his vacation short due to a case of dysentery) decided to send in over 2000 troops (and a few tanks from Fort Meade) to restore order in the District.  While there was still some violence (and at least one death) that night, the mobs were stopped, and the city was quiet the next day.  Over the four days of violence, at least seven people were killed and hundreds injured.
The Black reaction to the violence in Washington was, in some quarters at least, surprisingly upbeat.  William Trotter, president of the Equal Rights League, returned to the US in late July after a secret visit to France to investigate how African-American soldiers were being treated there.  On July 27, he told a crowd: "We believe that self-preservation is the first law of nature.  Unless the white American behaves, he will find that in teaching our boys to fight for him he was starting something that he will not be able to stop."

Republic Day violence: Deep Sidhu's police custody extended by 7 days
Tumblr media
A Delhi Court on Tuesday extended Punjabi actor-turned-singer Deep Sidhu's police custody by seven more days in the Republic Day violence case.
Sidhu, arrested from Karnal bypass in Haryana on February 9, has been touted by Delhi Police as the 'main instigator' of the violence which took place on the Republic Day at the Red Fort.
Delhi Police Crime Branch is probing if the violence was part of a larger conspiracy. On February 9, the court had sent him to seven-days custody of the police for interrogation.
While in custody, Sidhu along with another accused Iqbal Singh were taken to the Red Fort to recreate the scene of events that unfolded at the historic monument on the Republic Day.
The last custody was sought for multitude of reasons, including to visit Mumbai, Punjab and Haryana to explore links, identify and arrest his supporters and recover phones with different SIM cards used by him.
On January 26, protesting farmers had clashed with the police during the tractor rally against three farm laws. During the clash, a section of protesters had entered the Red Fort and hoisted a religious flag. Read More

Congress, 15 other opposition parties to boycott President’s address
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: With the government seizing on the violence during the tractor rally to corner protesting farm unions, 16 opposition parties on Thursday announced a boycott of the President’s address to Parliament scheduled for Friday, and accused the Centre of “orchestrating” the mayhem in the Capital to discredit farmers. The opposition reiterated its demand for repeal of the three farm laws which it said were an encroachment on the states’ rights, were passed without scrutiny and were a threat to food security of the country and farming that sustains 60% of the population. Among the non-NDA parties, BJD said it would not be part of the boycott. The boycott declaration, signed by Congress and regional parties like DMK, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, Left parties, NCP, Shiv Sena, RJD, National Conference and PDP, covers a significant section of the opposition — a big show of solidarity with farmers who are facing police action and are seen as being on the defensive. With former BJP ally Akali Dal and AAP of Arvind Kejriwal separately announcing a boycott, the supposedly bipartisan customary practice during the first Parliament session every year in Central Hall may have BJP and regional parties like YSRCP, TRS, BJD, AIADMK and BSP in attendance. These parties have on occasion supported the government on bills and kept away from the UPA. The statement — signed by Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma, Mallikarjun Kharge, Jairam Ramesh, Sharad Pawar, Farooq Abdullah and T R Baalu among others — said lakhs of farmers had braved odds for over two months to protest peacefully at the Delhi borders, during which 155 farmers had lost their lives. Claiming that “government-sponsored disinformation campaign” tried its best to “discredit a legitimate mass movement”, the statement said, “The protest and the agitation have been largely peaceful. Unfortunately, there were a few acts of violence on January 26 which were condemned unequivocally. We also express our sadness over the injuries sustained by Delhi Police personnel while handling the difficult situation. But we believe that an impartial investigation will reveal the central government’s nefarious role in orchestrating those events.” The opposition said the controversial farm laws were an “assault on rights of the states” and “will effectively dismantle the edifice of national food security that rests upon MSP, government procurement and distribution system”. It said the bills were brought without consultations with states or farmers’ unions and passed without parliamentary scrutiny by muzzling the opposition. “The very constitutional validity of these laws remains in question,” it added. CPM chief Sitaram Yechury slammed the government for “orchestrating violence” to disrupt peaceful protests by farmers and alleged the government had used similar tactics during protests at JNU, at Jamia Milia University and Shaheen Bagh, during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Yechury said what happened in Delhi on January 26 was “straight out of the BJP playbook”. “That is distraction, destruction and disinformation. It is on the basis of this that they have orchestrated the violence. They now want to use this to distract people from the main issue,” he added. Yechury also said while lakhs of farmers were plying their tractors on pre-decided routes, only one splinter group “was allowed to deviate”. “How did they deviate without police connivance? How did they reach ITO? They were even allowed to reach the Red Fort and climb up to the ramparts. Anyone who is familiar with the security at Red Fort knows that it is impossible to reach the ramparts without the gates being opened. These gates are usually under lock and key. Who opened the gates and who allowed them to climb the ramparts? This smacks of very clear connivance,” Yechury sai

I need to get my story out there.
For those of you who don’t know, I’ve been in a committed relationship for over 5 years. A year before that, however, I was in an abusive relationship. I want to tell my story (and show off how lucky I am to have my current boyfriend). TW; emotional abuse, attempted sexual abuse, threatened physical abuse. Also, WARNING: Strong language
As I mentioned, I have been in a committed relationship for over 5 years with the love of my life. Before this, I had a few "serious" (what I thought were serious) boyfriends, & I was with one of these boys for over 6 months. I know, not a long time, but FOREVER when you're 13 like I was. This boy emotionally and verbally abused and scarred me, and towards the end it got dangerously close to physical and sexual abuse. Like I said, I was 13 when we started dating. We were in 8th grade, and I had been crushing on him for about 2-3 years prior. When he finally asked me out, I was ecstatic, and even THAT is an understatement. Little did I know...my life was about to become hell. It started like any other middle school relationship; sitting beside each other in bus room and at lunch, calling each other every night, and texting each other a lot when we both got a cell phone. Then it turned into him texting me 24/7, even at school, to see what I was doing. If I took more than ten minutes to reply (even at school), I got accused of cheating and “being a whore”. Keep in mind, at this point we’d only kissed a few times. This was around 2 months in, & I just thought he was being over-protective because of how much he cared. We said “I love you” for the first time sometime that month, and I believed him. At barely 13, I was ECSTATIC to be “in love”, so when I would go to his house & he would demand things from me (I’ll let you imagine, but not actually having sexual intercourse), I let it happen. I let the red flags slip because he wasn’t hitting me. I wasn’t in physical pain, so it had to be healthy and normal, right? Keep in mind, this was only about 3-4 months in. This behavior went on for another month or so, and then it got worse. EXPONENTIALLY worse. When I’d go over, we would play “hide and seek” with his little brother while his parents had their attention elsewhere. The only real rule was that their room, that they had shared at the time, was off limits. So, of course... my then-boyfriend would take me & “hide” in there since his brother wouldn’t be checking. (He was only around 9 at the time, I believe, so he didn’t know any better). He would make a blanket fort on the bottom bunk (his bunk) of their bed, and we would lay there and make out for, like, ten minutes until his brother gave up and yelled for us to come out. One time during a game of hide and seek, he pulled out a condom from his sock drawer. A grape-flavored condom. At THIRTEEN fucking years old. We were both virgins, and I didn’t have any desire to change that. I didn’t even realize what it was until he asked if I was ready to have sex with him. I said “no” repeatedly, and he just kept saying “come on,” “it’ll be fun,” “you know you want to,” “just let me do it,” etc. and kissing me and trying to take my clothes off and put his hand down my pants, getting more angry and aggressive as he went. He was not letting up and I didn’t know what to do. I was terrified. At this point I yelled, “Time’s up, (brother’s name)! We’re in here! (Boyfriend’s name) cheated!” That, of course... made him even more furious with me. He angrily tossed the condom back into his drawer as his brother came in the room, and that was that. Neither of us spoke about it to each other ever again. Around month 5, he threatened to hit me for the first time. I was in Tennessee at my grandma’s on vacation. We were texting about how much we missed and loved each other, and he asked if I had been seeing another boy while I was in Tennessee. I told him “no,” but he didn’t believe me. He just kept pestering me about it until eventually, I got tired of his constant accusing and put my phone in another room and just relaxed with my family. After a few hours, I went back in and got my phone. I was flooded with a stream of “WTF are you doing?”, “I know you’re cheating right now you stupid whore,” etc. I texted him & told him I “had” to put my phone away because I got in trouble for being on it too much. He said “I don’t believe you, I know you were cheating on me.” After a while of me crying my eyes out in the back bedroom trying to convince him of the truth, he finally believed me. I remember the next text he sent me word-for-word. It’s been nearly 6 years and I can still recite it perfectly. “I swear to god if you ever cheat on me, I’ll kill the boy and get you with whatever strength I have left.” My heart sank. My fairytale had turned into a horror movie, and I was terrified. I didn’t tell anybody, and for the rest of the trip he kept telling me what he would do if I ever cheated. When I came back home to West Virginia, I made up every excuse not to see him. Freshman band camp was starting soon after I got back, so of course that was my main excuse since only band students can be there (or so I said). After discussing the overview of that summer’s events with friends (I left out the attempted rape & threatened physical violence), I knew it was time to end it. I texted him that it was over (dick move, I know). He pulled the “I swear I’ll kill myself if you do this,” “I’m crying so hard I can’t breathe,” etc. So I texted his parents to check on him & they said he was fine. I ended it then & there. I was free. Until school started, anyway. Luckily by the time classes began, I was dating a “big bad” junior. He would not even DARE talking to me because he was terrified of my new boyfriend. So...that was the end of that (you know, except the depression, anxiety, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD])... I had already been showing signs of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), but my mom was holding off on treatment for me in hopes that it would be better once I was free of the hell I was in. But...it got worse. I developed full-blown MDD, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and signs of PTSD (not diagnosed so I don’t know for sure if it’s that or just a sub-set of my anxiety). From then, I had the boyfriend that scared him off, but that only lasted a few months. Then came...the big one. My first love. The only one I would ever want to be with. (Or so I thought). To make a long story short: this kid and I had been off/on for a few years, best friends since we were in diapers, and I had known I loved him for a while, but pushed it off because he wasn’t interested at the time. We dated for a few months for the last time, and then he broke it off because he “wanted to be single”...even though he started dating someone else a few days later. But we’re on good terms now, so I won’t get salty again. Then...when healing from my broken heart, I decided to message the first single, attractive boy on my Facebook IM. (Yes, it was still called Facebook IM, with the automatic pop-out boxes and everything...damn I’m old). This boy & I knew each other for a few years prior, because he was (still is) best friends with my older brother. We talked on Facebook for a few days and then exchanged phone numbers. We were in the same section in band, and we sat next to each other at community band practice. After about a month of being close, I knew I really liked this kid and there was something special. He asked me out one night at 3am & I said yes. 5 years later (as of June 10th, 2017) here we are. We’ve had an apartment together for over a year, and we’re more in love than ever, and keep falling deeper in love every day. This man has loved me through everything. Every psychotic break, every inconvenience, every suicidal moment, EVERYTHING. Somehow he hasn’t given up on me. I don’t deserve to have someone like him who loves me even half as much as he does, but GOD am I lucky. I truly believe that we are two halves of a whole, and we were destined to be soulmates. He is my other half, and I’d like to think that I am his other half as well. I could not be any more thankful for this amazing man. He is my soulmate and my saving grace, and I honestly don’t think I’d be here without him. To make this whole story short: Life was shit, but then Andrew came along. And I love him so much for that and everything he does. Side note: HUGE thanks to my amazing Criminology professor for helping me realize that my story matters, and it is valid. The abuse may not have been physical, but it left me scarred. And that’s okay that I am scarred, because I am lucky enough to be able to come forward today & tell my story from the outside. If ANYONE has anything like this that they feel they need to talk about, whether it’s advice or just venting, I AM HERE. I will always be here. YOU ARE WORTH MORE. I love you.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Alicia Valle told Esteban Santiago, 26, at a hearing Monday that the three federal charges lodged against him could mean the death penalty if he is convicted.
“We are telling you the maximum penalty allowed by law so that you understand the seriousness of the charges,” the judge said.
Shackled in a red jumpsuit in the heavily guarded federal courtroom, Santiago answered mostly yes or no to questions, and told the judge he understands the charges, which include committing violence against people at an international airport resulting in death, and two firearms offenses.
Esteban Santiago is taken from the Broward County main jail as he is transported to the federal courthouse in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on Monday, Jan. 9, 2017. Given his finances, the judge decided he’s eligible for government lawyers at taxpayer expense.
Valle ordered Santiago held without bail and also set a detention hearing for Jan. 17, followed by an arraignment for entering a plea for Jan. 23.
More than a dozen officers kept watch outside the courthouse, carrying rifles and wearing bulletproof vests. There were also mounted police and K-9 units.
The charges don’t specifically use the word murder, but the effects of one of the gun charges and the airport charge are the same because they cover actions that result in a person’s death and can result in capital punishment, said former federal prosecutor David S. Weinstein.
“Under federal law, there are many statutes that cover the killing of another human being and unlike state statutes, they are not specifically titled murder. But the elements of the crime and the definition of murder are the same,” he said.
State authorities could file first-degree murder charges against Santiago, but that’s unnecessary for now, Weinstein added, because there is no statute of limitations on murder. If something were to go wrong in federal court, the state could then proceed against him, he said.
No links to international terrorism have been found, the FBI has said. But if they surface, federal prosecutors could obtain an updated grand jury indictment to add terror-related charges, Weinstein added.
“Their focus right now will be on the existing three charges and the continuing investigation,” he said.
Santiago has been in custody since Friday’s shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The FBI said Santiago flew on a one-way ticket aboard a Delta flight from Anchorage to Fort Lauderdale. The 11½-hour flight has a 2½-hour layover in Minneapolis, one of the longest itineraries within the U.S.
He checked a single piece of luggage: a gun box for his Walther 9 mm semi-automatic pistol and two magazines of ammunition, according to an FBI affidavit. Agents say he retrieved the box in baggage claim and loaded his weapon in a bathroom stall before opening fire on fellow passengers.
In November, Santiago walked into an FBI field office in Alaska with a handgun and his infant child, saying the U.S. government was controlling his mind and forcing him to watch Islamic State group videos, authorities said.
Raw: Florida Airport Gunman Leaves for Court The Iraq war veteran accused of fatally shooting five people and wounding six at a crowded Florida airport baggage claim is due for his first court appearance. (Jan. 9)
Officers seized the weapon and local officers took him to get a mental health evaluation. His girlfriend picked up the child. On Dec. 8, the gun was returned to Santiago. Authorities wouldn’t say if it was the same gun used in the airport attack.
Life or #death legal journey for #airport shooting suspect A legal journey that could mean life or death for the suspect in the Florida airport mass shooting has begun with appointment of a public defender to represent the Iraq war veteran blamed for killing five people and wounding six more.
