Behind the scenes of The Sound of Drums/The Last of the Time Lords
(Part Nineteen)
Excerpt from TV & Satellite Week's interview with John Simm:
How did you get the role of Harold Saxon?
I'd been talking to BBC producer Julie Gardner, who is responsible for both Life on Mars and Doctor Who, quite a bit over the last year or so about the possibility of me appearing on the show. We were trying to find something for me to do in Doctor Who. When they came up with the role of Harry Saxon I thought it was perfect.
How did you hear the good news?
Russell T Davies came up to Manchester where I was filming Life on Mars, and we had a top-secret midnight meeting in a hotel after a night shoot. Russell described what was going to happen and I was like, 'Yes, absolutely, I'll do that.'

“Do you really think I care for you so little that betraying me would make a difference?”
Well, now I feel like a real tumblr ™️ user.
It has been almost nearly ten years that I first started watching, “Doctor Who.” I started watching because of the otherworldly hype surrounding the 50th anniversary special, “The Day of the Doctor.” And now, ten years later, in the year 2023– we are nearing the 60th anniversary special. Time. It’s a crazy thing, huh?
And I caught up to the 50th anniversary special pretty quickly actually. And as I caught up though, I noticed something… friends of mine who’d gotten ms into the show, whether they were my friends at school or online friends, were dropping the show. Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor was due to regenerate, and my friends were used to the last two iterations of The Doctor being eccentric, young, hot guys. They weren’t used to The Doctor being an eccentric, bitter old man. And so many of my friends, never gave a Twelve a chance. I dropped the show for reasons out of my control around the same time. Netflix had removed, “Doctor Who,” in the US shortly after Capaldi’s first season came to the platform. I probably saw two episodes of series 8, and I never finished it.
Until yesterday. And boy… TWELVE IS AMAZING. CAPALDI IS AMAZING. “Shut up!” I love him. I think he’s fantastic. It was my first time coming back to the show in nine years, and I never once didn’t recognize my friend, “The Doctor.” Series 8 felt like a warm hug after being away for so long. And don’t get me started on Jenna Coleman as Clara Oswald because she is SOMETHING ELSE. She’s incredible.
This show is so special to me. This character, these characters, are so dear to me— the TARDIS feels like home, and I feel terrible for being away from it for so long.
If you’re one of those people who dropped the show when Matt Smith left, who didn’t give Capaldi a chance? Please, give him that chance.

@sclfmastery // send 🫂 to hug my muse!
How many times will the Doctor be the one offering the Master a hug, and how many times will the Master take it? Almost never, and for the Master to initiate is even more rare, so the Doctor takes them where he can.
He's so, so incredibly starved for touch in this regeneration -- since the Moment, really, not that he remembers why. But he does remember the loneliness he felt afterwards, especially after every companion leaves and more especially after the Valiant.
So when the Master comes in for a hug, the Doctor - Theta - hugs back, tight, and silent, and letting Koschei take what he needs. Tucks his face into his lover's neck and breathes him in.

Runs past someone while shouting, "I WOULD START RUNNING." There is some sort of demonic looking creature chasing him down the street, and now congratulations, your muse has been spotted by it as well.
As the good doctor said, better start running.

an absolute travesty we only had the DoctorDonnax2 for like half an hour total. can you Imagine the chaos. the doctor is all like "he was born in fire and blood and war" because hating himself and his choices is his oldest pastime and lookee here! free doctor he can blame and boot out of the tardis! i think they were indicating that blue had donna's memories, but i adore the concept of them having a twin telepathy thing.
the doctor is right to be scared. there are now two people in the tardis who have ALL the context to call him out about his decisions. one is him, who we already know he Despises. one is his best friend, who's literally carrying a piece of him right after he's had the idea that he turns everyone he lets close into the worst parts of himself planted in his head. both of them are part donna and therefore categorically incapable of letting him comfortably retreat into his drama persona and avoid his problems. both of them are also part timelord and therefore he can't "i'm a 900yo alien from the most advanced civilization in the world, i am Unknowable" his way out of it. there's two of them, so they're ready to tag-team him into oblivion.
picture it. we get another donna season. it's just the doctor trying desperately to run away from his worst nightmare of being Known and Loved and Called Out On His Bullshit and the DoctorDonna twins chasing him down with cheerful bloodlust. incredible.

Not to complain about some of the best trans rep I've seen in mainstream media but like. It was just kinda funny to me how the end of the episode was basically just "The Doctor is beyond gender binary. They have transcended. But also there IS a fundamental difference between men and women and women are better."
