#he's so floppy recently and I hope it's just the heat. I think wamr weather makes everyone floppy and loungy#a beauntifulle boye...#cats#STILL working on posting some drafts. finishing new poll adventure.. other things... It's just hard with the weather and other things going#on. I really like stories about various ?trades? (though for now only through manga/anime), but most of the time either story uses it only as medium for character interaction or dump ton of repeated useless information while abandoning characterization. one of them, as you know, is my impure agere oc, representing all the sad and flashback parts of everything. I made them to help cope with my thoughts and feelings. They are based off of my appearance and my trauma. They age up with me.

Meaning of name: Emily (from Urban Dictionary.) An Emily is someone who is crazy inside and out. She knows who her friends are and try’s hard to look after them. She is very pretty but doesn’t always know that. She isn’t always the most popular, but to her that doesn’t matter. She has friends from all ages and they all adore her. She hides her feelings however upsetting they may be.
Meaning of name: Elliot (Urban Dictionary) Elliot is a true master at caring. He teaches how to love and be loved. A man of honour a man of steal. He's as handsome as a Greek God, as strong as diamond, as compassionate as a saint and is as gentle as a father's touch. OTHER INFO:
• They age up with my current age since they aren't dead and they are based off of me.
• I decided to make them some sort of entity since I couldn’t make them a ghost and still be alive lol they age up with me.
•Their “trauma” is the same as mine, which is why I won’t write it in detail here but they are a victim of abuse.
• They are all bloody because its how I feel about my trauma.
• They physically and mentally regressed to the age they are supposed to be, if they are in their child forms, they are an actual child. (Direct reference to my age regression I use to help me cope with my trauma) They prefer to be in this form so they can protect and befriend children. They don't harm children or other victims of abuse. The children usually call them “bunny.”
• When they're in their adult form, they have a partner called Stephen. Someone who they have known since they were 17 years old. When they are a “child” he takes care of them and protects them to make sure they don't ever get hurt again.
• Their sense of justice is what caused them to want to help other children. They never want to see another child go through what they went through.

Hi everyone! I just finished the 100 Days Of Languages challenge and I wanted to do something new afterwards, so I came up with a challenge of my own! I’m calling this the Checkerboard Challenge because it’s an 8x8 grid. Along the top there are eight language-related skills, and on the side there are eight modes of learning, so each box contains a way to study a particular skill using a particular mode. I wanted to do that because exposing yourself to the same information in different contexts is so helpful for learning and I wanted to apply that to how I study Portuguese. The result is a list of 64 different ways to study languages, 71 if you include the alternate options listed below, each one versatile enough to be repeated as often as you want using different topics or resources and hopefully interesting and useful for your learning.
Ways To Use This Challenge
Complete all of the challenges on the table, in whatever order you want.
Choose a particular skill you’d like to work on. Complete all of the challenges in that column.
Choose a particular method of learning that works well for you. Complete all of the challenges in that row.
Use dice or a random number generator to pick a challenge to do every day, and see how long it takes you to get bingo or connect four or something.
Choose whichever of the challenges sound useful to you and incorporate them into your regular studying routine.
There’s no obligation to post anything you make; even when I say to record yourself doing something, that can just be for your own future reference. (It’s recommended for the collaborative tasks that focus on creating resources that would be useful to other learners or interacting on social media, but even then you can just write the posts/comments and not post them if you prefer) However, I would love to see anything you do want to share, or any updates on your progress, so you can post anything like that with the tag “checkerboard challenge” which is also where I will be posting the tasks I complete.
The tasks are listed below, with more detail than what would fit in the boxes.
Reading
(Visual) Read a comic book, comic strip, or webcomic in your target language. Depending on your skill level and  the amount of time you have, you can choose anything from a single strip of a  newspaper comic to a full-length graphic novel
(Auditory) Read along with a chapter of an audiobook, or another piece of writing with accompanying audio. Some language learning websites have articles with recordings of native speakers  reading them. If you want, or if you can’t find anything else, you could even  use a song and its lyrics.
(Hands-On) Option 1: Play a video game in your target language. This can be a computer or console game, or an app on your phone or even a  little browser game. Check the language options on games you already have to  see if your target language is available, or if not, many free games have lots of language options. / Option 2: Read and follow a recipe or another  set  of instructions, such as an art/craft tutorial, the rules to a board or card game, a DIY project or a magic trick.
(Logical) Solve  riddles or logic puzzles in your target language. (Alternate:  Read a short mystery story such as a minute mystery (or something longer if  you prefer) and see if you can solve it before the characters do.)
(Collaborative) Talk by text chat with someone else learning your target language, or a native speaker learning your language.
(Read/Write) Read an article or a chapter of a book  (or the whole thing) in your target language. It can be about any topic, and can be a children’s or adult’s book depending on your skill level and preference.
(Personal) Find and read a translation of a piece of writing that’s important to you, such as your favorite book as a kid that you feel nostalgic for, or a poem  that resonates with you.
(Creative) Read story in your target language and illustrate what happens. The quality of the drawing isn’t important unless you want it to be; the important thing is to help you process what you’re reading.
Writing
(Visual) Choose a photo, either at random from a generator or by choice on a website like Unsplash, and describe it in as much detail as  you can. Your description can focus just on describing visible details in the image, or you can make up contexts for and stories around the things you see, whichever you prefer. (Alternate: Do this with a physical object nearby instead of a photo.)
(Auditory) Try writing simple poems, focusing on the auditory features of what you’re writing such as rhyme and rhythm. You can use a rhyme dictionary to expand your vocabulary in an interesting  way while you’re working on this. It’s not necessary to worry too much about  the artistic quality of the poems unless you want to.
(Hands-On) Write instructions for how to do something you know how to do, such as recipe, a life skill, a game  or sport, an art of craft project, or even your method of language learning.
(Logical) Create a persuasive piece of writing that logically argues a point. It doesn’t have to be about a serious or controversial topic. For example, you can defend your prediction for the next season of your favorite show, or what would happen if some fantasy or sci-fi concept were real (maybe a good  way to practice the conditional tense if you’re studying a language that has one), or why your best friend is awesome.
(Collaborative) Use  a language learning social media app like HelloTalk. Comment on posts and  make your own.
(Read/Write) Write a summary of something you’ve read in your target language. You can either read in your native language and summarize in your target language, or do both parts in your target language.
(Personal) Write a journal entry in your target language, talking about how your day or week has been or what you are thinking and feeling. (Alternate: Write about one of your memories.)
(Creative) Write a small story in your target language. It can be about whatever you want, and it doesn’t have to be very long or detailed. You can (option 1) write it as prose, which could be better to practice description and narration or to focus on a particular verb tense, or in (option 2) a script style which could be better to practice conversational language.
Listening
(Visual) Watch a video with narration that describes it, such as a nature documentary, an instructional  video such as a cooking video, or a video reviewing something.
(Auditory) Find an online stream of a radio station. Pay attention to both the music and what the announcers say.
(Hands-On) Watch a video demonstrating a craft project, recipe or other task and follow the instructions.
(Logical) Watch or listen to a mystery story and try to solve it before the characters do. This can be a whole movie or novel-length audiobook if you want, but it doesn’t have to be; even an  episode of something like Scooby Doo should work.
(Collaborative) Exchange audio with someone else learning your target language, or a native speaker learning your language.
(Read/Write) Watch a video or listen to a piece of audio and take notes on what you learn.
(Personal) Watch a dub of a piece of media you are familiar with, such as your favorite childhood movie.
(Creative) Option 1: Listen to a story or other piece of audio and  illustrate it. / Option 2: Listen to a song and make up a new verse.
Speaking
(Visual) Make a video of yourself showing something and talking about it, for  example a tour of your home or neighborhood, a review of something, or a video about your pet.
(Auditory) Listen to a piece of audio and try to repeat what you hear. You don’t have to pause  after every word and repeat it, it’s probably better to go at least sentence  by sentence or with parts even longer so you can keep things in context.
(Hands-On) Explain to someone, or record yourself explaining, how to do something, possibly while demonstrating.
(Logical) Record  yourself explaining, and possibly demonstrating, how something works, such as a science concept.
(Collaborative) Record yourself explaining a concept you’re learning, like a grammar topic or how to use a particular word.
(Read/Write) Read out loud and record yourself.
(Personal) Make a recording of yourself talking about something that’s important to you  or a memory or anecdote you have. (Alternate: Make a vlog entry (even if you don’t have a vlog to put it on) talking about your day.)
(Creative) Record yourself telling a story, or tell one in person to someone.
Vocabulary (Most of these, with the exception of the first two, can be done with any vocabulary list you want.)
(Visual) Choose a page from a visual dictionary to study. One way you can do this is by studying the words and then covering  the labels with sticky notes or whiting them out on a copy and trying to fill in the blanks.
(Auditory) Choose  a song in your target language, and look up and study any unfamiliar words in it.
(Hands-On) Option 1: Use your vocabulary list as a scavenger hunt list. This works well if you have a lot of nouns and adjectives on the list. For everyday household items, you can look for the literal items on the list, while if they’re more obscure you can look for pictures or other representations of them. / Option 2: Act out the words on your list. This works well for verbs and adverbs, as well as more abstract  nouns or adjectives like emotions. You can record video of yourself doing this and later look back at the video to try to guess the words.
(Logical) Option 1: Make a crossword puzzle using your vocab list. If you write the words and clues, there are tools online that will build the puzzle itself for you, or you can do that by hand on graph paper if you prefer. You can either wait a while and then solve your own puzzle to see how much you remember, or give it to another language learner to solve an ask them to make one for you to solve. / Option 2: Look into the etymological history of the words to find out why they mean what they mean and whether they have any connections to words in your own language.
(Collaborative) Create a vocab list post around a theme, including words you are studying as well as any related words you already know. Include any resources that you think  would be useful to someone using the list, such as sample sentences, pictures, or whatever else you want.
(Read/Write) Try to write a small story or other piece of writing using as many of your vocab words as you can.
(Personal) Write  a sentence about what you think of each thing on your vocabulary list.
(Creative) Try to write an interesting sentence using each word on your vocabulary list. (Alternate: Illustrate each word on your vocabulary list. You can do this on index cards if you want, to make illustrated flash cards.)
Grammar
(Visual) Create a color or shape coded system to classify a concept like verb tenses or noun gender. For example, you can read  through a piece of text and highlight all of the verbs using a different color for each tense, or you can make flash cards with your vocabulary words and mark them with different symbols depending on the gender.
(Auditory) Grammar is a common topic for educational songs. Find a one intended for kids who speak your target language.
(Hands-On) Using words on sticky notes or index cards, build sentences that demonstrate grammatical concepts. If you have access to some of those little word magnets in your target language, those would probably work great for this, but if not (and I know I don’t) you can write various words, affixes, etc. on index cards or sticky notes, or use your existing flashcards if you have them.
(Logical) Create a table, chart, or diagram of a grammatical concept you’re studying.
(Collaborative) Write a post explaining a grammar topic you are learning.
(Read/Write) Read through a text, to find (and maybe highlight, circle, etc.) examples of a grammatical concept, then write more examples.
(Personal) Write about a part of your life that corresponds to the grammar topic you are studying. For example, for the future  tense, you can write about your plans or hopes.
(Creative) Write a small story relying on the grammatical concept you’re studying.
Pronunciation
(Visual) Look up diagrams of how to pronounce sounds you struggle with. These can be found as images or in an animated form in YouTube videos, and usually show what your tongue, teeth, etc. are supposed to be doing when you pronounce the sound.
(Auditory) Find a recording of a native speaker, record yourself saying the same thing, and listen for differences.
(Hands-On) Try to pronounce some tongue twisters or other pronunciation-based challenges.
(Logical) Try  learning the linguistic names of sounds you work with, and look into how they  compare to other sounds. Wikipedia has articles about the different sounds that can exist in languages and tables showing how they are used in various languages.
(Collaborative) Record yourself reading something that contains sounds you struggle with and post it for feedback, possibly on an app like HelloTalk.
(Read/Write) Look  at the written IPA pronunciations (these can be found on Wiktionary) of words you learn and look up what the symbols mean.
(Personal) Sing along to songs you like in the language, especially (for the personal category) nostalgic ones or ones meaningful to you.
(Creative) Write a tongue twister using words that are difficult for you to pronounce and practice saying it.
Cultural Context
(Visual) Explore a museum website in your target language. The museum should be located somewhere where your target language is spoken, but it up to you whether you want to look at an art museum, a science or history museum, or something else. Look at the exhibits and read the descriptions.
(Auditory) Create a playlist with traditional, classic and modern songs in various genres that either were invented in or popular in a place where your target language is spoken. Ideally using resources in your  target language, learn about the songs and genres.
(Hands-On) Using  resources in your target language, learn how to do or make something from a culture that speaks it. For example, you can look up a recipe, a tutorial for a dance style, the rules to a game, or how to make an art or craft project. (Make sure the thing you pick is being openly shared by  members of the culture it came from.)
(Logical) In your target language, learn about a scientist / inventor / etc. from somewhere the language is  spoken. Learn about their work, with explanations of what they invented or discovered, and if you want, find out other information about their life too.
(Collaborative) Comment  on or otherwise interact with the blog/YouTube channel/etc. of a native speaker,  after you read or watch it, of course. (You don’t need to receive a reply to check off this box, because that part is not under your control.)
(Read/Write) Try reading a significant work of (children’s or adult) literature in your target language.
(Personal) Learn about something relevant to your job/hobby from where your target language is spoken, using resources in the language.
(Creative) Read  about artistic or literary themes,  movements or eras where the language is spoken, and  create something (it can be something  simple) using those concepts.

The Voice of Ghilan’nain: Introduction to my Blog
My beloved subjects: This is my first post on this blog so I will take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Gerasimos (though Jerry is what I usually introduce myself as out of courtesy, as both my name and surname sound like gibberish to most people). I’m a 23-year-old male biology student currently studying in Greece, and an aspiring entrepreneur with quite a long way ahead until I make that dream come true.
Before I introduce you to this blog, I would like to say a few more words about myself. I am a firm believer in education (scientific, technological, and financial) and I do enjoy learning new things, especially if they can be used to solve problems. I am interested in astronomy, biology with emphasis on plant biology, game design, and video game art. I also enjoy walking outdoors, cooking, relaxing at a beach while stargazing, talking about politics and money, teasing the cat (my friend, not the feline pet) and playing video games. 
In regards to the latest subject, Bioware’s Mass Effect was the first RPG game I ever played. Though it took me a year to appreciate it due to its lackluster gameplay and limited weapon options, I eventually managed to see it for what it was rather than what I wanted it to be. I played through the trilogy with a dictionary next to me as my English skills were laughable back then. It was through Mass Effect and later Halo that I built my English skills, with the later giving me the opportunity to be part of a great community filled with incredible members such as Haruspis, Covenant Canon, HiddenXperia, LateNightGaming, and Halo Canon. I also had my ride as part of the Halo Archive community, with wonderful discussions and theories throughout the years, and I was fortunate enough to watch the community grow from 40 to over 2000 members and survive several crises until its eventual collapse. During the three or so years that I was part of the Halo Archive (known there as Faber of Will and Might), I got to see video games as far more than just games and develop a passion for delving deep into the lore of video game franchises and their extended media. It is for this reason, that I would like to take a moment and thank every member of the Halo Archive for the incredible conversations and debates we had during that time and particularly Haruspis, whose incredible analyses partially inspired me to start this endeavour (You can visit his blog by clicking here: https://haruspis.blog).
It was during the end of my first year at University that I got into tabletop gaming, but it took several years for me to discover the existence of Dragon Age. Eventually, both the release of disappointing games, like Halo 5: Guardians and Mass Effect Andromeda, and toxic fans caused my interest in these franchises to wane and the Halo Archive to fade. This caused me to search for new franchisees to fall in love with and this is how I got into the world of Dragon Age, starting with Inquisition. THE Dragon Age Setting is currently my favourite fantasy setting and the reason I started making “my own” tabletop RPG for it in order to play Inquisition with my friends. I used the quotation marks in the previous sentence because I started by homebrewing for the Official Tabletop DA RPG with each update and homebrew rule making it more and more distinct from the RPG it derived from and pushing it closer to the feel of the games, with mechanics like Barrier, Guard, Status Effects, Critical Hits, the addition of several dozen warrior, rogue and mage abilities and spells, the removal of the stunt mechanic, the introduction of sustained abilities and many more features.
I have always found Medieval English themed settings and happy worlds boring and dull. I don’t see fiction as escapism from problems but as an opportunity to do things I would normally be unable to do, such as setting foot on alien worlds, standing against the Covenant as they kill billions in their genocidal campaign or simply playing as an elf that throws fireballs at sleeping targets in the midsts of a death cloud and then paralyzing them or scaring them to death by casting Horror. Due to my bias against the classic medieval fantasy setting, Ferelden is the least interesting part of the Dragon Age setting for me. I do enjoy the extravagant gold and blue themes of Orlais, the Necropolis of Nevarra, the villainous city of Kirkwall, the Blighted Anderfels, the decadent Rome/Byzantium inspired Tevinter cities, the war-torn Seheron, the pirate heaven of Estwatch, the exotic Rivain and Par Vollen, the assassin filled Antiva and the mystery of the tainted Black City far more than the mostly bland Ferelden. It is thanks to these locations and their stories that, for me, Thedas trumps any setting with a million races each worth half a page of text or settings made for adventurers that go on a killing spree to get rich within a fixed world that refuses to change.
Thedas is a continent that never stops changing. Old feuds are resolved and new conflicts emerge. Racism, blood magic, squandering nobles, the blight and other horrors make the life of most people in the setting a challenge at best and a nightmare at worst. Within the span of three games, the setting has changed dramatically and the world has moved forward. Thedas is thus very different from what it used to be when Dragon Age Origins released. Being dynamic and reacting to player choice is a very important aspect of the setting, which is both a testament to Bioware’s own talent and the setting’s innate simplicity.
Thedas’ richness doesn’t derive from an army of races or from endless classes and deities, but from its smaller scale, with fewer races and emphasis on the dynamics between their societies and the struggles that various groups, societies, scholars, nations and individuals face. With fewer things in the setting, there is more room for them to be fleshed out and explored in depth. Furthermore, Thedas has a rich history, exposed to players mostly via codex entries written from an in-universe perspective. This allows events to be portrayed differently depending on whose perspective they have been witnessed by, encourages fan discussions and theories, turns new contradicting information into a quest for the truth that often results in revisiting old passages and finding new meanings after certain revelations. Unlike most fictional universes, Dragon Age’s lore takes effort to extract and while this might not be for everyone it has kept the community far more engaged and alive throughout the years.
Thedas is a land full of mysteries filled with danger. The Horror of Hormak, the Black City and the Blights, the Old Gods, Arlathan, the curse of Nahar, the Pyramids of Par Vollen, the Kossith, the ships from beyond the Volca Sea, the Executors, the history of the Dwarves, the Second Sin, the Cekorax and many more are all shrouded by the element of the unknown, which drives the curiosity, fear, dread, nostalgia and most feelings associated with them. It is elements like these that make me want to write about and share with others stories set in this world, whether official or my own.
Thus, after several months of thinking about it, I decided to create my own blog about Dragon Age. The Voice of Ghilan’nain is a blog named after my favourite Elven Goddess, Ghilan’nain, with me acting as an echo of her guiding voice through the world of Thedas. Just like She focused on creation, so will this blog focus on the things that can be, the transformation of what exists and the discussion of content that many people don’t talk about, navigating through the darkest, deepest and most obscure parts of the lore in search of stories, characters, creatures and their potential, expressing it either through my analyses or through attempts at poetry and short story writing. I will also make some posts that serve as feedback for Bioware on issues regarding gameplay mechanics, UI and story and if people are willing I can provide a few builds or ideas for DMs who want to introduce their friends to the world of Thedas through tabletop gaming. With that said, I hope you enjoy reading my future posts and I am looking forward to your feedback, suggestions and comments.

hey everyone! i’ve decided to compile my favorite websites and tools i use for school and self studying. as someone who’s going into their sophomore year of high school, i would highly recommend all of these for any situation you may need them for. this will be updated regularly, so stay tuned for more. feel free to submit any you think should be on here, and i’ll check it out / give you credit if i add it to the post. links are all below. enjoy! 
flashcard websites: 
✧ tinycards - flashcards by duolingo: this is a great website by duolingo that lets you choose from collections of flashcards and follow categories for easy learning of the chosen topic.
✧ quizlet: one of my favorites. it’s probably the most used flashcard website, and it’s super easy to use; simply make a card set, and choose options to study.
✧ study stack: slightly older site, but it includes fun games to help you learn your information on the flashcards. 
✧ cram.com: another great site that includes different categories of flashcards to choose from and study.
textbook / workbook answers:
✧ slader: this website is an actual lifesaver, but try not to use it to cheat on everything, okay? slader can have the answers to all the answers in your textbook; you just have to find your edition, and type the page number the problem came from. great for math books.
language arts / english: 
✧ spark notes: one of the coolest features on this site is the inclusion of “no fear shakespere”, where you can read the full works of shakespere, as well as a simplified “modern” version right next to it; makes old english pretty easy to understand. 
✧ cliffs notes: this site is very popular as well, and includes study guides and test prep for your next literature / written exam. 
✧ no red ink: this site can help you improve your grammar and writing skills with mini assessments and practice; very handy for improving your understanding of grammatical usages.
✧ easybib: are you lazy and don’t want to take 500 years to cite your websites? just copy and paste the site link into easybib, and it’ll do it for you. 
✧ short story guide: basically what it says; a collection of popular short stories for references or studies. 
✧ purdue OWL: the purdue OWL (online writing lab) is a giant collection of information you can use to cite websites; not kidding, they have almost every situation you could ever need. 
math:
✧ desmos graphing calculator: pretty self explanatory. i’m really lazy and usually don’t want to grab my handheld, so the online one is very convenient. 
✧ symbolab math solver: if you have a math problem you can’t figure out, use this website. not even kidding, if you look for it, your type of equation or problem will be here; put it into the solver, and it will give you a step-by-step walk through of how to solve the problem. actual lifesaver. 
✧ virtual nerd: i really love this site, because it has many video tutorials on basic math questions people typically ask. search for it, and you’ll most likely find what you’re looking for.
world language learning: 
✧ duolingo: everyone probably already knows about this one, but i’m putting it here anyways. extremely popular site to learn many different languages.
✧ conjuguemos: very good site for learning tenses and verbs of languages.
✧ collins translator: i use this for translating languages instead of just plugging it into google translate, because it’s actually in dictionary format. very helpful.
sciences: 
✧ late nite labs: this is a startup website that can let you visualize the school lab through virtual learning.
history / gov / geography:
✧ gps coordinates finder: not much explanation needed for this one. just put in the address(es) you have, and it’ll give you the latitude / longitude in decimal degrees.
✧ sheppard software geography: this site is a little bit kid-ish, but it works wonders if you’re trying to memorize countries, capitals, physical features, or states. definitely recommend.
independent learning / study: 
✧ khan academy: this is possibly the most popular site on this list, but you can practically learn anything here. i really suggest creating an account.
✧ codecademy: this site is the reason i can make my tumblr blog look fancy, haha. it teaches you simple and complex coding, and i highly recommend you try this out, even if you’re not looking for a career in computer programming. everyone should know how to code even simple things. 
other: 
✧ rogerhub final grade calculator: this is pretty self-explanatory. just find the type of grade calculator you need, and plug it in. 
✧ the college board: this should actually be at the very top, because if you’re not already in college, you’re probably going to need this as a requirement for the sat, act, psat, and more. if you haven’t already made an account, i suggest you do so before you take your next standardized assessment.

14 Books Every Writer Needs on Their Shelf 
Here is a list of fourteen books on writing every writer needs on their shelf.
I was going to say you should have. But the only thing I would “should” you about is not a book, but a verb. You should write.
(And you should have a cat, or two. I have six, and seven litter boxes.)
These books are the actual books I have on my shelf. I didn’t go buy new books to make myself look smart.
Some of these books could be used as a reference to solve a specific problem, like “Form the possessive singular of nouns with ‘s.” That answer is on page one of The Elements of Style.
Or maybe you have a dragon called Resistance every time you try and sit down to write and you need to read The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. Or maybe you need to figure out how to make the reader care about your villain, and you need to read Save The Cat by Blake Snyder.
If you are a writer, you write. Right?
Writers should be writing, but sometimes you need to read and learn from other writers.

There are all kinds of books on writing out there, each covering some different aspect of the craft. I’ve listed fourteen of my favorites below. I’ve categorized them based on which aspect of writing they deal with so that you can easily find the ones that will be helpful to you.

1. For Fiction
The Modern Library’s Writers Workshop: A Guide to the Craft of Fiction by Stephen Koch
Joe Bunting suggested I read this book. A good suggestion, Joe. The book is full of wisdom from Koch as he shares insight and techniques from several great writers. Stephen Koch used to chair Columbia University’s graduate creative writing program.

2. For Formatting
The Chicago Manual of Style: The Essential Guide for Writers, Editors, and Publishers from the University of Chicago Press
All the rules you will ever need if you are a writer, editor, or publisher. And in this world of self-publishing, you could be all three.
This book’s shipping weight is 3.2 pounds. I can’t find my scale to weigh my copy. If this book were a steak you wouldn’t be able to eat it in one sitting.

4. For Goal Setting
The Freedom Journal by John Lee Dumas
This will give you a detailed plan to get your book finished. It is one thing to say, “My book will be written at the end of the summer.” But what are you going to do every day to get it finished? Dumas gives you daily action steps to actually finish.
Actually is such a great word. Goals and actually, they need to go together. The word “goal” is on page 564 in my dictionary, and “actually” is on page 14.
Now, I actually need to use this book, or I will never get my book finished.

5. For Grammar
The Elements of Style by William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White
A small little book with rules to help writers with their craft. I carry this book in my messenger bag (I don’t carry a purse) to read while I am waiting in line to buy cat litter, or when I am waiting at the veterinarian’s office. It’s a quick read to help you write better.
Or is that write well?
I suggest you read the whole book and not just use it for rule reference.

6. For Memoir
The Memoir Project by Marion Roach Smith
If you want to write about your life, read this book. Hmmm, now I am sounding bossy. I have read this book three times, not because I didn’t understand it the first time, but because it is so full of good information and fun stories. I read it for pleasure and to learn.
We all have stories to tell. This book will help you write your story so someone will want to read it.

This book is about screenwriting. However, no matter what you write, you have to be able to tell me what it is about. This book helps you answer two essential story questions.
First, what is the logline for your story?
Second, why do you need to save the cat?

9. For Self-Doubt
You Are a Badass: How To Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero
This book talks truth with a few cuss words. I almost didn’t buy the book because Sincero said “badass” in the title. However, being a badass means loving yourself and not listening to lies other people tell you about who you are.

10. For Self-Publishing
APE: How to Publish a Book by Guy Kawaski and Shawn Welch
You don’t need permission from anyone to self-publish a book. However, you do need to know how. This book is a complete guide to self-publishing. I have not only read the book, but studied it. We can have total control over what our books look like.
Whitman, for example, self-published (and typeset!) Leaves of Grass. Self-publishing could change from stigma to bragging point—maybe we could change the term to “artisanal publishing” and foster the image of authors lovingly crafting their books with total control over the process. —Guy Kawasaki and Shawn Welch

The First Five Pages: A Writer’s Guide to Staying Out of The Rejection Pile by Noah Lukeman
Lukeman gives very specific information about story submission, from point size to margin width. Don’t give an editor an excuse not to read your story because you didn’t know how to properly submit.

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language edited by William Morris
Words are beautiful, and you can discover their origin and meaning. I know you can find definitions online; however, on a screen you cannot see the words that come before and after the one you are looking up. A dictionary is like a family reunion: the words are all related.
By knowledgeable use of the dictionary we should learn where a word has come from, precisely what its various shades of meaning are today, and its social status. —William Morris
Stop Reading and Write
Reading books on writing can help you write. But no matter how many books you have on your shelf, the only way to get better at writing is to write.

Scalzi’s been hammered for it. Scott Lynch got nailed for it. Years-long delays that fuck up publication schedules and hurt both the actual target for OldPub authors (the publishers) and the purported target (the readers) accordingly are too common, and sadly not even for reasons one could excuse if there were measurable results to offset them.
T.V. (RMWC Reviews): The third of Tsuburaya Productions 10th anniversary shows, Jumborg Ace was different from Ultraman Taro and Fireman in that it was chock full of robots. Jumborg Ace began airing on January 17, 1973 on Mainichi Broadcasting System, the show ran for 50 episodes and was primarily produced by staff who had previously worked on Mirrorman under the direction of Yoshiyuki Kuroda.
New (Wasteland & Sky):  Finally, today is the day we’ve been waiting for. The Pulp Mindset is out for everyone on amazon. This guide has been in the works for awhile and now I can finally show you just what I’ve been working on behind the scenes for the past couple of months. It’s a guide for new creatives who wish to understand just how to approach art in the modern age, and for those who wish to understand just what this NewPub thing is about. Writers (Kairos): To call Ambrose Bierce a writer would be an understatement. This famous–some might say infamous–author, journalist, solider, and adventurer left a mark on American culture comparable only to the likes of Poe, Lovecraft, Greeley, and Twain. His Devil’s Dictionary skewered official and media doubletalk a century before the politically correct crowd’s drive to deform language began in earnest.
RPG (Table Top Gaming News): Crypt of the Mellified Mage Adventure Now Available for Forbidden Lands RPG. I have to say, I don’t know what it means to be “mellified.” Spellcheck is telling me it’s not even a word. So, I’m pretty sure it’s bad if it happens to you. And if it happens to a mage, that’s gotta be worse, right? And if that mage is in a crypt? That’s just dangerous. Good thing you’re a band of adventurers that goes out of their way to find such dangers, right? The Crypt of the Mellified Mage is now available for Forbidden Lands. You can pick up your copies online now.
Fiction (Superversive SF): The third book of the chronicles begins 18 months after the destruction of the Black Cauldron and details the Princess Eilonwy’s journey to become a proper young lady and magic user. Not understanding why she must learn court protocol and leave Caer Dalben, she is understandably upset. However, she goes, as is her duty. Things quickly turn upside down as she is kidnapped by agents of the defeated Queen Achren! Taran and friends set out to rescue her. Along the way, they will make new friends and new enemies.
Robert E. Howard (John C. Wright): Conan here is once again the archetypal noble savage. The superiority of the grand and lonely barbarian, a man who prevails with no sort of civilization to aid or soften him, is once again clearly on display. Indeed, the quality is one that can be seen with the eyes, spotted before a word is spoken. Thus is Conan described when he first steps into view on a path of a deadly forest.    … [Conan] wore a sleeveless hauberk of dark mesh-mail in place of a tunic, and a helmet perched on his black mane. That helmet held the other’s gaze; it was without a crest, but adorned by short bull’s horns. No civilized hand ever forged that head-piece.”
Art (DMR Books): Ed Emshwiller, who commonly went by the nickname “Emsh”, died on this date in 1990. I’ve only really studied his work in the past few years, but that’s made me realize the man and his art are both worth knowing more about. He was an early illustrator of Conan, as well as Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. I plan on doing a “Savage Swords of” post devoted to Emsh at some point in the future, but today I think an overview of his life and work is more appropriate.
Fiction (Paperback Warrior): Using the names Jack Higgins, Martin Fallon, and Hugh Marlowe, Henry Patterson had a successful, early literary career throughout the 1960s and early 1970s with a high-adventure template utilized by Alistair MacLean, Desmond Bagley and Hammond Innes. Five-years prior to Patterson becoming a household name with The Eagle Has Landed (as Jack Higgins, 1975), he used the name James Graham to write a traditional WW2 adventure novel called A Game for Heroes (1970). It was published as a hardcover in 1970 by Macmillan and reprinted countless times over by the likes of Dell, Harper Collins and Penguin. It remains in print today in both physical and digital versions.
Pulp Magazines (Men’s Adventure Magazines): It also got me started on a hunt for Mike Shayne stories in men’s adventure magazines (MAMs). There’s very little information online about Shayne stories in MAMs. The most significant clues about them are in a list on Philsp.com, the awesome, indispensable “Galactic Central” site that provides information about thousands of different vintage magazines. As I looked through the Galactic Central list, I realized it wasn’t quite complete.
Gaming (Gamespot): Season 3 of Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be a very big deal for Halo 3 in particular. Design director Max Szlagor said in a new blog post that Season 3 will contain many more customization options across the board, including brand-new content for Halo 3. Season 3 will add new weapon skins, new visors, and “other content” for Halo 3, Szlagor said. This is a big deal because Halo 3 has never had weapon skins. “This marks the first step in our expansion of Halo 3 customization,” Szlagor said.
RPG (Morrus’ Unofficial Table Top RPG News): The pandemic-mandated online version of Gen Con is going on right now, and many companies traditionally use the event for big releases. The fact that it’s online isn’t holding Paizo back as they release their new products, including the Advanced Player’s Guide for Pathfinder and the Starship Operations Manual for Starfinder.

Lesson 1: History And Scope
1) Foreword
Inking About Words is a free online poetry course covering all kinds of poetry. No previous knowledge of poetry is required. Its purpose is to mentor budding poets in the local scene of Wellington, Aotearoa. People from outside of the greater Wellington region are welcome to use these resources for their personal education, but are asked not to submit to the workshops. Inking About Words is the creation of Vex Chat-Blanc, and is run in association with Poetry in Motion, Wellington, and with the support of the Wellington community. For further information see the FAQ.
The course comes in the form of a large informative post each month, with small posts of additional content throughout the month. Hopefully every mid-month there will also be a guest post from a local poet expanding further on the topics covered that month. I want people to know what they're in for, so here's a run-down of what to expect from the monthly posts:
A brief foreword
An index that doubles as a checklist so people who feel competent in covered topics can choose to skip/skim those parts
A few sections of writing describing some practical skills, poetic devices, poetry formats, and general theory
Small breakout paragraphs with tips, examples, or sources for further reading
Some encouragement and suggestions for practicing skills covered that month

3.1) Poetry by definition
If you're not new to any kind of educational works, you know to expect that we begin with a boring waffle about the 'true definition' of the topic - starting off with a dictionary definition before painstakingly pointing out all the ways the definition isn’t precise enough.
For poetry, I'm fond of this definition from dictionary.com, which gets progressively more vague with each step and frankly sounds like a poem in its own right:
 noun  1. The art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts.  2. Literary work in metrical form; verse.  3. Prose with poetic qualities.  4. Poetic qualities however manifested:        "The poetry of simple acts and things."  5. Poetic spirit or feeling:        "The pianist played the prelude with poetry."  6. Something suggestive of or likened to poetry:        "The pure poetry of a beautiful view on a clear day."
Of course, a dictionary definition really fails to encompass the breadth of poetry. But we don't need a good definition to do the ground work. I just thought it would be good to begin these lessons making sure everyone is thinking about how loose the definition can be, because having that perspective gives you a lot of room to experiment with the boundaries of what can reasonably be called ‘poetry’.

3.2) History of poetry
If you’ve studied English Lit before, you’ll likely be familiar with the works of some white dudes. But perhaps one might imagine a world of Hemmingways and Byrons to be a bit dull, so I’m going to expand the horizons a little.
An important thing to keep in mind about poetry is that it predates literacy, so while existing written work has been dated back all the way to about 2000BC, using written word as the academic yardstick to measure poetry might be a bit naive, given the oral traditions of hymn, prayer, chant, song, mnemonic, elegy etc. are known to date back further.
On a more modern scale, it’s useful to look at poetry’s applications. While many of these are not new, studying our forebears (that is, the proverbial giants on which we stand rather than the ferocious beasts that stand before us, but you can imagine either as you choose) gives us perspective on what we may wish to repeat or improve upon to have words with impact, rather than simply having words. Such applications I’d like you to consider:
Using poetry to define new concepts
Expressions of affection
Bringing whimsy to the mundane
Speaking out against injustice
3.3) Geography of poetry
Literature is one of the most universally important cultural artifacts. For us to truly understand poetry, we must understand its existence in every culture provides us with a wealth we could never have amassed alone. Studying to create this course really drove home this point for me as I read lists of devices transliterated from other languages, many of which described rules unique to forms from relatively small regions. The point is, poetry doesn’t belong to one culture. It especially doesn’t belong to the academia who study its theory but aren’t a part of its applications. Many cultures, whether that be regional, religious, class, generation, social rights causes, artistic movements, or anything else; include poetry as part of their identities. As a result, poetry can be a powerful way for people to connect to their peers.

4) Forms
4.1) Free Verse
Excuse me for starting with the obvious, but free/open verse is poetry that doesn't have any rules or restrictions.  It's a good starting place to establish that your poetry can just say "idgaf" to all the rules. I can't really teach form without acknowledging that form itself is an opt-in sort of deal.
4.2) List Poems
One of the easiest forms of poetry is the list poem, which unsurprisingly is a list as a poem. You'd think that not just any list would do, but for real any list will do. Just write a list of things and decide how you want to make it poetic (You don't necessarily need to make a list of boring things poetic. It's more common that people make poetic things into a boring list, and that approach is fine too.)

4.3) Found poetry
Poetry can be found among all sorts of text. Remembering that poetry is to give more meaning to a text through devices, it follows that the act of finding meaning in existing text can therefore create poetry.
There's lots of ways to create found poetry, many of which hinge on highlighting the absurdity of the world. One of my favourites is just to take things out of context. The removal or addition of context can create or change meaning in text.
Example: This couplet written using a truth or dare game on chewing gum wrappers.
Here's some other forms of found poetry:
4.4) Blackout poems
An erasure poem involves removing words or letters from a block of text, such as a page of a book, or a psalm, or an existing poem, such that what is leftover forms a poem. The most popular method, and a more common name, is the blackout poem, which involves using a permanent marker to blackout the other words. Many use the opportunity to also create an image that complements the poem.

4.5) Spam poetry
Spam poetry is a form of found poetry that takes words or phrases from spam emails and forms them into poems. Sometimes they have messages, but more often they are an exercise in skirting the uncanny valley of coherency to highlight the absurdity of spam messages.

4.6) Google poetry
Another common form of found poetry is Google poetry - a form created by gathering the suggested search completions that google presents you with when you start typing in a partial search term. Many of these poems consist only of suggested search terms and are very short and in the format of a list poem. However, it is possible to create a poem that uses these search terms as part of a larger narrative.

5) Devices
5.1) Simile
A simile is an explicit comparison made, typically using a ‘like’ or ‘as’ statement.
Example: “A simile is like a metaphor”
5.2) Metaphor
A metaphor is an implicit comparison made by saying something entirely different to what you’re saying. Now, is that cheating? Heck yes. Poetry is 90% cheating.
Example: “You are an asshole”.
(Swearing is, after all, probably the most common use of poetic device.)
5.3) Analogy
An analogy is a phrase that uses one idea to express another. This can be a metaphor or a simile, and can be straightforward or subtle and indirect. On the internet, analogies are often (ironically) regarded as a false equivalence. The catch being that an analogy is used to explain a concept by relating it to an existing concept rather than say those concepts are the same.
Example: An atom is like a solar system in that it has planets (electrons) that orbit a large sun (the nucleus).
5.4) Allegory
An allegory is the story-sized version of a metaphor. A tale in which the actors are stand-ins for political figures, or social ills, or a child you want to send an irresponsibly indirect warning to. They tend to be used to send a moral or political message. Balancing the clarity of the message with consistency of the metaphor can be tricky. Most fairy tales are allegories designed to teach children about the dangers of the world around them.
5.5) Parallelism
Parallelism is the use of words that are similar in their construction, sound, or meaning. It often employs repetition, and is often used to compare two concepts. For example: “Like father, like son”. Parallelism is an umbrella term that encompasses many more specific poetic devices, such as Janus parallelism, which uses the multiple meanings of a word to join two different statements together in such a way that each statement uses a different meaning of the word.
Example: “I came, I saw, I conquered.”
5.6) Correlative Verse
Correlative verse uses two lists, and parallels the items between those lists. The way the lists are paralleled isn't constrained in any way, so that's up to you. That said, I think if you want people to appreciate it as a device, you have to use a parallel that will be clear to your audience.
Example: “The intern, the mistress, and the public, were not aware of the affairs of the state, or the heart”

6) Skills
6.1) Inspiration
Finding inspiration is a thing most poets I know have trouble with, but to be honest, if you have something to say, about anything at all, you have a poem. Anything you can tweet can be reworked into a poem with the right application of poetic devices. Of course it's not as simple as that. Some topics are bland no matter how you state them. But if you find yourself with such a problem, consider some alternative perspectives on the topic: is there someone with higher stakes in the matter? Maybe you could write a persona piece (be wary of telling other people's stories though - it seems like an easy grab for evocative content, but I can guarantee you it's a trap. Your best work will come from your experience 99% of the time). Is the topic an easy allegory? What’s the smallest amount of words you can use to get your point across? Can the topic be expressed by remixing something that already exists? Would wild exaggeration make the topic more interesting?
6.2) Drafting
The drafting process is not a universal thing, and it’s okay to have a process that differs from what I’m about to outline. But there are two mistakes that are incredibly common among poets:
Believing a bad draft is a worthless poem
Believing a good draft is a finished work
Ideally, a first draft should be a train wreck of ideas that don’t consistently flow on from each other. It may not be cohesive enough to perform, and in fact that’s probably a good sign. Most forms of writing have an initial planning stage, and use the first draft to get the ideas from the plans into words, acting as placeholders for the more refined structure and vocabulary in later drafts. Poetry is typically easier to plan -after- the first draft. I recommend using the first draft as a way to collect whatever stanzas, ideas, and poetic devices flow freely out of your headspace when you first decide something might make a good poem. Don’t worry about what the end result will be, and don’t pre-emptively throw things out if they don’t seem good enough. Just ensure you write down everything that comes out before you start running out of ideas. It’s worth noting that many people get discouraged because their first draft turns out bad. The biggest favour you can do your self-confidence as a poet is to not expect a first draft to produce a poem.
6.3) Assessing
Once you have an initial draft, you can work on figuring out where to go from there. This is the point where you can plan a structure, choose a form, decide what message you want to convey, decide what lines to keep, decide what lines to throw out. Think hard about what aspects of the draft are good, and what aspects are bad. Consider where you can give it a better rhythm and where more complex poetic devices can be fitted in without disturbing the flow.
Tip: Think carefully about -how- you want to convey your message. Your draft may have some novel devices or particularly on-the-nose metaphors that will go a long way to making the piece unique among similar voices. This is normally what I recommend focusing on, as the most striking poems usually are the ones that hold an entirely new perspective for people.

7) Suggestions
7.1) Find some poetry
I don't usually look for found poetry. You get the most out of it by developing a mindset that questions whether any given thing is poetry (which I do recommend working on, it will help you a lot to produce more content). But you absolutely can actively search for found poetry. Try the techniques described earlier just for practice.
7.2) Find some poets
You gotta know what you like. Better yet if you know why you like it. Find some poets you like across all genres, and jot their names down. If you need to discover new poets to do this there are good sites online that will help you out (and expose you to too many old white dudes, so don't rely on them too heavily if you can). I recommend choosing a variety of categories such as genres/topics that interest you, minority groups you want to see represented, poetic forms you like, etc and trying to find a poet you love for each category. If you want to take it one step further, use those categories to make a Punnet square and see if you can find a poet that fits each intersection of those categories. Be sure to include both page and performance poets.
7.2) Make bad poems
Try editing a draft into a intentionally bad poem. Aim to end up with something you'd be embarrassed to have discovered in a diary from at least 5 years ago. This will help you in a number of ways: you'll become more comfortable accepting the difference between a draft and a poem, better be able to identify mistakes/bad use of poetic devices, and become more comfortable producing bad work (it seems like an unnecessary thing, but I assure you it will help you out)
7.3) List anything
Just pick something to list and list it. Try to cover a range of topics from trite mundane things like shopping lists, to heavy existential things like reasons university is killing you. Lists make great drafts and typically bad poems. The unfortunate thing is they tend to make great drafts specifically for list poems, so you won't always get something you can work into another form. But once in a while a list poem comes out really well on its own merits. --- I juuust realized I said I’d explain how submissions will work at the end of the post. I really have no idea what an appropriate way to do this would be, so for now if you a) are from Aotearoa, b) want some advice (at the moment I’ll only be helping with the assessing step), c) are comfortable with your work being posted here, then fire through a submission.

3: A WEEK OF FIRSTS IN CHIANG MAI
Let me preface this entry by apologizing for not posting this blog entry earlier. It’s been an incredible, rewarding, and extremely busy month (+) in Thailand. Along with exploring a new city, meeting a terrific group of new friends, and integrating ourselves into the Thai culture, we have had homework to complete and lesson plans to write.
So, finally, I have a moment to put the stories and experiences of the first wonderful week onto virtual paper.
AWAY WE GO TO CHIANG MAI!
DAY .5 (SUNDAY)
Ryan and I arrived at the Chiang Mai airport, grabbed our bags, and met up with our driver, as well as some new friends from our program. We were taken to La-Mer Hostel in the Old City of Chiang Mai and given the keys to our assigned rooms. (Mine is a cute little corner room with sky blue walls and floral tile. I have grown quite fond of it.) Soon after, we had our first meeting with the entire group of TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) students.
A REMINDER/EXPLANATION:
We will spend the majority of the month of October living in Chiang Mai and training to become English teachers. Following our certification, we will receive our school placements and move on to our respective cities all over Thailand.
Saying that the group is absolutely wonderful would be an understatement. Every single member of our class of 22 is so kind-hearted, open-minded, and ready for challenge and adventure. Many, though not all, are extremely well-traveled, and some have previous teaching experience. Regardless, everyone is so unbelievably excited about being here and supportive of each other.

Yes, you read that right! There are two other girls from Tennessee! And guess what?! THEY ARE FROM NASHVILLE! There are three Nashvillians in our little group all the way across the globe. They went to school just down the road from me! It always surprises me how small the world can be.
After the initial meeting, at which we introduced ourselves and received information about the next month of training, we all headed just a few streets down to the famous Chiang Mai Sunday Walking Market.
WHAT IS THE FAMOUS CHIANG MAI SUNDAY WALKING MARKET?
I’m glad you asked. Simply put, it is a long stretch of the city blocked off for vendors to set up small stalls of food, clothes, trinkets, bags, sunglasses, etc. Pedestrians make their way through the crowded streets to shop and eat and listen to the live music played by buskers on the street.
It was absolutely packed, which added to the crazy energy and authenticity. We bumped and pushed our way through the people and stalls for about two hours before stopping off to listen to live music at a patio bar on a side street. A bluesy-rock band of Thai men belted out a classic: “They call me the breeze. I keep blowing down the road.” A fitting end to our first night in the city of Chiang Mai.
DAY 1 (MONDAY)
We began our day in the classroom with a brief meeting. Soon, we departed for the nearby mall complex in our very first songthaew ride. Remember that pickup truck with the roof and benches welded on the back that I mentioned in the previous post? Turns out that would become the staple method of transportation around Chiang Mai.
At the huge mall, we shopped around for necessary items (Thai burner phone circa 2007), and then had the unique pleasure of enjoying a Thai food court.
Later that night, we all decided to check out a local reggae bar and were absolutely floored by what we heard. The band, which consisted of 5 Thai guys playing the guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, keyboard, played through a mind-blowingly varied setlist. Not only did they smash out some classic reggae hits, but they also played rock, ballads, country, latin, and pop. It was fabulous, even “transcendent.”
DAY 2 (TUESDAY)
Tuesday began with a trip to the rice paddies in the outskirts of Chiang Mai. We had a lesson on planting rice and spent an out pushing clusters of rice bulbs into the muddy floor of the paddies. Though our group made it fun, planting was hot and physically tiring. I have so much respect for the farmers who do this work day in and day out. It is such a difficult and taxing job for people who get little societal respect or recognition. Next time you have rice, take a moment to think about where it came from and who spent their days planting, cultivating, and harvesting it.
After rinsing the mud of the paddies of our feet, we hopped back into the red songthaews and continued on to our next stop: a Muay Thai gym.
MUAY THAI: A DICTIONARY DEFINITION

Our training session began with stretching, running, and a crash-course in the standard Muay Thai boxing moves. Then, we rotated through a weight-lifting circuit (complete with flipping massive tires). We finished by practicing our jabs, cross-jabs, elbow strikes, kicks, and knee strikes one-on-one with a Muay Thai fighter. Needless to say, we were all sweaty and exhausted.
To cap off a day of new experiences, Ryan and I decided to try a fish pedicure, aka submerging your feet into a tank while a bunch of tiny minnows nibble all the dead skin off of your feet. IT WAS WILD. The first few minutes consisted of squealing and squirming, because it really did feel like a bunch of tiny minnows were munching on your toes. As we settled into the idea of it, though, it began to feel more like a consistent vibration. It turned out to be a very relaxing experience, and my feet had never been softer.
DAY 3 (WEDNESDAY)
The overcast Wednesday morning was a perfect backdrop for a meditation session with a very informative and funny monk. He spends his time traveling around the world teaching and practicing Buddhist meditation. Because of this, he can imitate a startling number of global accents, including (but not limited to) Australian, German, English, and even Minnesotan! After answering our questions about the monkhood and cracking more than a few jokes, he led us in a short guided meditation. If you’ve ever tried meditation, you know it can be a tedious and difficult task, but if done right, it can be cleansing and rejuvenating. For most of us, it leaned more toward the former. Add ‘improve mediation skills’ to the Thai to-do list!
Next, we visited the tunnel temples and pagoda connected to the meditation center. Both were beautiful—ancient gray stone covered in brilliant green moss. The small temples at the end of each tunnel were simple but fascinating, all with small sticks of incense spiraling smoke into the air.
We piled back into the trusty songthaews and made the twisting climb (almost 5,500 feet in elevation) up the mountain to Doi Suthep, a famous temple outside Chiang Mai. We arrived and promptly hiked up the few hundred steps to the entrance of the temple. Once inside, we were stunned by the glorious colors and intricate detail of the space. Equally as breath-taking was the view from the side balcony. You can see for miles and miles—all of Chiang Mai and the mountains beyond.
That evening, we all walked across the old city to the Night Bazaar, a nightly market with clothes, souvenirs, cheap gadgets, an international food stand area, and live music. We sat together and drank and ate and sang along with the music AND THEN WE ATE A BUNCH OF BUGS.
WHAT?
Yes. Bugs. Crickets. Silk worms.
At first, it was a cautious nibble and then, before too long, it became a game of ‘what are the odds you’ll eat x amount of bugs.’ Hilarious and gross.
In case you’re wondering, the jury is split. I say silk worms are way better. Ryan opts for crickets every time.
DAY 4 (THURSDAY)
Thursday was packed with classroom time—Thai language, Thai culture and politics, and more information regarding placements.

Most Thai noodle dishes are eaten with a spoon in your dominant hand and fork in the other. The eater is to fork the food onto the spoon and eat.

The Thai monarchy is intertwined in almost every facet of Thai life. In the wake of the former King’s death, Thailand has been in a state of mourning since last October.
DAY 5 (FRIDAY)
After a few classes in the morning, we visited a huge market in the heart of Chiang Mai’s Chinatown. This market was particularly interesting, because it was seemingly located in an abandoned three-story mall complete with non-functioning escalators. It boasted a unique mix of smells and goods.
That evening, our program agency hosted a family-style dinner in a gorgeous riverside restaurant for both our group and the other TESOL group studying across the city. The restaurant is owned by a former Thai pop star and was absolutely beautiful, especially lit up at night. We were able to mingle, admire the beauty of the location, and enjoy the live folk music.
We ended the night dancing to the now-infamous band at the Reggage Bar. Groovy. Boogie on, Thailand!
DAY (SATURDAY)
After a week of XploreAsia-sponsored orientation activities, we took it upon ourselves to organize something: a visit to the Elephant Sanctuary. It did not disappoint.
We were picked up outside the hostel by two rugged-looking songthaews early in the morning. For almost 2 hours, we twisted down the windy roads deeper and deeper into the jungle. As we drew closer to the sanctuary, the road turned into a bumpy dirt path. We weaved through the trees until we reached a steep trail, at which point we hopped out of the trucks and carried massive bundles of bananas across a rushing river and down to a bamboo structure with a primitive deck and long table. We were met by our guide, who talked to us about Asian Elephants and the Karen People, a mountain tribe in the hills outside Chiang Mai, and their role in caring for the animals.
With bunches of bananas in our hands, we followed the mahouts to a small grassy patch with five or so elephants—3 big and 2 babies.
MA-WHAT NOW?
A mahout! A mahout is an elephant trainer and care-taker. Each mahout is assigned an elephant when he is of age. This assignment lasts for life, as elephants have roughly the same life expectancy as humans. Hesitant at first, we fed the elephants one banana at a time and moved cautiously around them. Soon, though, we understood how gentle and smart these elephants were and began to interact with them, pet their trunks, and pat their sides.
We restocked our bananas and continued on to another area with another group of elephants. The oldest elephant, a grandma to most of the babies, was my favorite. I found her rough trunk and wrinkly, smiling eyes to be so endearing and captivating. I could have spent all day feeding and petting her.
After lunch and a quick nap in the sun, we headed down to a muddy pit to give the elephants a mud bath. We splashed them with the brown water and rubbed handfuls of mud into the skin on their backs. Once we were all covered in mud, elephants and humans both, we walked to the creek to rise off. The elephants piled into the deepest section and rolled around—massive creatures tumbling in the water like children. It was quite a sight to take in.
After a final talk from our guide about treating elephants ethically with care and dignity (no riding!), we said goodbye to our amazing friends and made our way back to Chiang Mai.
