We’re advertising a book for readers of dark fantasy: The Hunting Moon—the highly anticipated sequel to the New York Times bestseller, The Luminaries—by Susan Dennard.
WHAT IT’S ABOUT
Winnie Wednesday has gotten everything she thought she wanted. She passed the deadly hunter trials, her family has been welcomed back into the Luminaries, and overnight, she has become a local celebrity.
The Girl Who Jumped. The Girl Who Got Bitten.
Unfortunately, it all feels wrong. For one, nobody will believe her about the new nightmare called the Whisperer that's killing hunters each night. Everyone blames the werewolf, even though Winnie is certain the wolf is innocent.
On top of that, following her dad's convoluted clues about the Dianas, their magic, and what happened in Hemlock Falls four years ago is leaving her with more questions than answers.
Then to complicate it all, there is still only one person who can help her: Jay Friday, the boy with plenty of problems all his own.
As bodies and secrets pile up around town, Winnie finds herself questioning what it means to be a true Wednesday and a true Luminary—and also where her fierce-hearted loyalties might ultimately have to lie.

Review:
Picking up where the first book left off Winnie Wednesday has finally gotten everything she could want, she's passed her hunter trials, her family is welcomed back into the Luminaries, and she's become the local celebrity. However Winnie is still searching for answers from her dad's clues and the only person who can help her find out what happened all those years ago in Hemlock Falls is her ex best friend, Jay Friday. Jay has secrets and issues of his own, and as the Leader of the Hunters hiding one particular secret is getting harder and harder. When Jay catches Winnie with items she shouldn't be keeping he decides to help her, whether or not she wants it. After their friendship ended four years ago, now they're back in each other's lives and Winnie is beginning to realize that Jay has been clearly trying to tell her his secret, yet when she realizes it... will she be able to stay with him? This book is definitely a much slower book than the first one, in fact this one felt like it only took the span of a few days in the book's timeline. Winnie is fresh from beating the hunter trial and spends the rest of this book working on figuring out her dad's clues and what her feelings for Jay are. This is the second book and realizing there is a third and final book has me asking what is happening in the end of this series. I liked the first book better if I'm going to be honest because it had a lot more going on but this one wasn't bad it just didn't really have anything happening. Jay and Winnie are mostly dealing their secrets and feelings for each other the entire book. Overall, it's an okay second book but I kind of wish this was the last book and any events that would have happened in the third book would have been combined with this one rather than stretched further. This is a much younger YA book and a slower burn romance as well.
*Spoiler: Winnie finds out that Jay was the werewolf who saved her and that he's had feelings for her four years ago and still does (He literally writes a song about her and sings it). Jay is a werewolf and has been keeping it a secret from her and pushed her away/ended their friendship because he thought he was protecting her and didn't want to hurt her. Winnie realizes that there is someone else out there killing people and it's not Jay, and that her dad was framed. Winnie rescues Jay when hunters go after him (while he is in werewolf form) and her aunt finds her (and jayout) and is ambushed by other Dianas (and she then lies for Winnie while in the hospital). Jay and Winnie admit their feelings for each other (this is only the second book in the trilogy).
*Thanks Netgalley and Tor Publishing Group, Tor Teen for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

The Hunting Moon - A Sequel I Wish Gave More
I really loved Susan Dennard’s The Luminaries for it’s rich attention to detail and emotive language. I thought that the vibes were all there for an unsettling YA Dark Naturalism, mythical folklore-laced series that would leave the reader eager for more. I went into her newest novel, The Hunting Moon, expecting the same descriptive lushness and strange separation to the rest of the town and I…

The Hunting Moon review
Tumblr media
4/5 stars Recommended if you like: mystery, urban fantasy, secret societies
This book picks up about a week or so after the ending of The Luminaries. Despite Winnie's experiences, the town is freaking out about the werewolf, not the Whisperer. But things are looking up for Winnie, since her finishing the third trial means she and her family are officially welcomed back into the embrace of the Luminaries.
I liked that Winnie's misgivings about how the Luminaries run are still present in this book. In book 1, she begins to question why parents are so willing to throw their kids into danger so young, and how culture runs thicker than blood in the community. When another 'werewolf attack' kills a Luminary, Winnie gets to see firsthand how the Luminaries grieve...and she isn't pleased. The more she's pulled back into the Luminary culture, the more Winnie questions everything, from how they see and react to death to how they deal with kids to how no one seems willing to risk standing up to authority to help others.
I also liked how Winnie still gets that sense of beauty from the forest. One of the things she has/starts to have an issue with re: Luminaries is how they seem to only see Nightmares as terrible things. The more Winnie comes to know the forest, the more she comes to realize that Nightmares are more complex than she's been taught. Like with the ghost deer in book 1, I liked seeing the prettier, more complex side of the forest.
Winnie herself isn't satisfied by the werewolf story, even if she can't remember those last few moments in the forest. She's determined to get people to believe her about the Whisperer, all while attempting to at least try to get back into being a Luminary. The deeper she goes, though, the more she realizes she needs to solve the rest of her dad's puzzle, which opens up some interesting cans of worms. Winnie definitely gains some more understanding in this book and it was nice to see how her perspective changed over the course of the book. She still feels pretty young and does miss some things I feel are pretty obvious, though does eventually realize the obvious.
Jay is more distant in this one, understandably, but it was weird seeing him and Winnie at odds with one another. That being said, while he does have his own stuff going on and his own secrets to keep, he is willing to continue helping Winnie as she tries to figure stuff out. And that includes when he doesn't fully understand or agree with her plan.
Erica gets more page time in this one and I have to say I like her a lot more here than I did before. The Luminary death seems to have gotten to her in a similar way that it got to Winnie and the two of them are able to create a shared sense of understanding over that. I liked getting to see traces of the 'real' Erica rather than just the facade, and I'm interested in getting to know her more in book 3.
Emma, Bretta, and Fatima are also in this and are still Winnie's closer friend group. As before, I enjoyed their interactions and that it let Winnie feel more normal for a little bit. I do wish we got to see as much of them in this book as we did in book 1, as it is I feel a little like they got pushed to the side, which is a shame since I like their characters.

I made a tiktok/reel today because one of my favorite authors has her book birthday today, and a friend came into my DMs telling me how slick my transition was. It was a basic transition. It was not phenomenal. It is something that every booktoker has done at least once. I realized I'd messed up my frames and almost showed the trash bins behind my house so I zoomed in and the frames are off but good enough I was pleased... how do the tiktok girlies do this every day? My millennial is showing.

November 2023 TBR--
Tumblr media
This month's TBR is going to be quite a bit smaller than the ones I've posted throughout the year so far. Moving has taken a lot out of me so I'm going to try to balance reading with watching TV shows and other things I enjoy that don't require nearly as much of my attention. (I say while The Shadow of the Gods just sits there staring at me.) I have a couple of rereads, a series starter, a new release, and a holiday read on the list this month.
We'll Be Home for Christmas by HelenKay Dimon (Library)-- I was surprised to find that I enjoyed a Christmas novella from HelenKay Dimon after reading her 2023 release earlier this year so I wanted to add the next Christmas novella in the series to my list. This one follows the older brother who has a high IQ but can't seem to understand women--at least one woman in particular. He takes women to bed one night and moves on the next morning, but, after a three day weekend with Lila, Spencer can't seem to get her off his mind. And it seems like fate is giving him a helping hand when she shows up in his town ready to take over her uncle's resort. But Spencer doesn't do serious.
The Hunting Moon by Susan Dennard (New Release)-- I cannot explain how truly excited I am for the next book in this series. The Luminaries was somehow everything I didn't know I wanted. It follows Winnie who just wants to join the Luminaries--an ancient order that protects the town of Hemlock Falls from the nightmares that prowl the forest in their town. After her family being disgraced by her traitor father, Winnie has known what it's like to be on the outside looking in, but as her birthday draws closer she's allowed to start the trials to determine if she'll finally get her wish. But, with new monsters popping up in the forest at night, is the forest safe even for the ones who hunt them?
The Shadow of the Gods by John Gwynne-- I would say this is my most intimidating read on my physical TBR shelf (and of course on this month's TBR). I know this is the start of a new Norse inspired fantasy series so I think it's a good place for me to start with John Gwynne (let me know if I'm wrong and I'll probably slate something else here instead). I remember seeing the cover for the first time and immediately wanting to know more. Gods warred and drove themselves to extinction which shattered the land. A new world rises with monsters stalking the woods and mountains. A world where the bones of the dead gods still hold great power for those brave or desperate enough to seek them out. Seems a little bit vague but I'm excited to learn more.
The Righteous by Renee Ahdieh (Reread)-- This is one I'm not super looking forward to rereading. The series starts with The Beautiful and takes place in 19th century New Orleans following a group of vampires (stop me if you've also watched a similar TV show). I've found that over time my intrigue has dropped quite a bit. Though, this reread of book number three means I would only have one book left to complete the series so why not. This one actually follows Pippa more than I was expecting so I remember that being fun at the first read. Let's hope it will be this time as well.
Evershore by Brandon Sanderson and Janci Patterson (Reread)-- Another reread for me in preparation for a new release. I struggled through rereading Cytonic so I think rereading Evershore is actually going to be a good mental break before Defiant comes out at the end of the month. This series follows Spensa who wants nothing more than to become a pilot for her planet's military, but given the cowardice her father exhibited before his death, they're not so willing to have her. The world really expands a lot from there as the series goes on. A lot of people say that the series becomes repetitious as you keep reading and after my reread of Cytonic I don't know that I can disagree with the sentiment. See Spensa do more training yet again got old fast. I think the highlight of this series for me is actually the novellas (shocking. I know) and so I'm looking forward to this reread.
I'm hoping to also add in a couple of holiday romances from my local library where I can in the month.
