Whenever I see a post about Chief Hiccup (or watch Httyd 2, for that matter) I'm always reminded of how Stoick did not want his son to become chief the way he did.

Maybe it's because Stoick saw his reluctance to succeed him, maybe it's something Stoick went through himself when he became chief and he wanted to spare his son the pain, but he had a plan. He was going to retire. Step down and let Hiccup take over in his stead. That way, his father could ease him into this insanely big responsibility, could be there to guide him, help him with the tough stuff he knows Hiccup might have trouble with.

Except, then he dies at Drago's hands. And Hiccup ends up thrusted into a position a feared to be in. And yeah, he does it mostly alone, just as his father did before him, which is exactly what Stoick was hoping to avoid.

#in the shows stoick has the council but hiccup mentions that his father just ignores them whenever it suits him #and gobber doesn't count either because gobber helped stoick with hiccup specifically #we have no idea which role valka plays in all of this but stoick chiefed 20 years without her #and with berk's past with dragons there's the likelihood that stoick became chief because his own father died #and as for hiccup he feared the position because he wasn't sure if he could be the chief his father was #because he and his father are so different in his eyes #completely missing their similarities as well as the differences that could actually benefit berk and have been benefitting berk #i just feel like hiccup wouldn't have such a hard time or even take his ascension as hard if it wasn't for his father's untimely death #httyd movies #httyd 2 #how to train your dragon 2 #hiccup haddock #stoick the vast #the haddocks

You know what? Stoick and Hiccup were once both surrounded by fire that almost burned them alive which was caused by dragons. So it wouldn't be too farfetched to think that they know the feeling of being burned alive and are haunted by this feeling.

And so Stoick, who we've seen show signs of trauma, would have needed to learn to live with the fact that his son has learned to feel what it's like to burn. To have air so hot in your lungs that it could burn him on the inside. To have your skin redden and blister just by being near. To have no obvious way out inside an inferno.

Stoick would've carried that feeling with him for years after Drago slaughtered every chieftain but him at the Thing. He tried to prepare Hiccup, yet tried to shield him. As a matter of fact, in a manner of speaking, by putting Hiccup in a forge and trying to keep him away from dragon training, Stoick tried to keep his son as far away from dragon fire as he could get him. If not for Gobber, Hiccup never would've entered.

But then Httyd 1 happens and ends and Hiccup had his battle with the Red Death. There was fire everywhere, just like at the Thing, and then Hiccup fell in, though unconscious and saved by Toothless just in time. So Stoick had to live the rest of his days- as he mended their bond and made up for lost time- with the knowledge that Hiccup knows exactly what he felt that day during the Thing.

I remember discussing Tintin casting choices with a friend from Germany and remarked how it was odd he often has an English accent in adaptations rather than a Belgian one, and my friend just replied "that's because Tintin gives incredibly strong English boy energy (derogatory)"

Here in the UK there's a lot of weird classism tied into accents. Today accent diversity and representation in broadcasting is actively pursued but in Tintin's time there certainly was a preferred accent to have.

I think we should all thank Stoick and Astrid for giving us the Dragon Riders. Because if it wasn't for one giving Hiccup the kill ring to establish the Dragon Academy and the other for periodically reminding Hiccup he had human friends now, too, Hiccup probably wouldn't be as close to Snotlout, Fishlegs, Ruffnut and Tuffnut as he ended up being.

Summary: Written for Bad Things Happen Bingo, The Butcher Bingo, Eclipsing Bingo. Set in a Modern AU/Horse Riding AU.

Despite Stoick’s assurances that he wasn’t sending his son away, Hiccup can’t help but feel like he’s lying through his teeth. He packed his son’s stuff, put him on a boat and then sent him away along with his mother. Claiming that her sanctuary for dragons would be a much more suitable place for him as he works through the trauma of the past year.
