he's the love of your life and the only person who sees every side of you and he's crossing a frozen lake to go fight a war because his father taught him that loving and being loved isn't a full destiny for a man and he's crossing a frozen lake and then he turns around, turns, says, "actually," like he's changed his mind and then the ice cracks and he falls through and he's gone. and he's gone. and you convince yourself he's not because you can't stand the truth.

This may be a controversial topic maybe but #TheGreat seems better in s3 after peter unalives? Catherine needed his death to be fully unhinged and be a girlboss. As long as he lived, she couldn’t become the person she needs to be. They show this throughout her reign and the season…

I need to make a post about this because I’m more upset than I thought I was. 😔 Spoilers for The Great season 3 ahead (and 2 and 1).
Orlo became a really important character to me at a very weird and rough time in my life, so I’m definitely a little biased, but the fact that his death happened so suddenly and accidentally and at the hands of Catherine feels so wrong. He was her first true supporter besides Marial (who only befriended and supported Catherine for her own gain, understandable in this society) and the only male supporter in her crew that followed her out of pure desire for the realization of a shared vision of what their country could be, and not because of any romantic inclinations.
Besides Catherine, I’d argue that Orlo had the most drastic and substantial development of character out of all the cast. Going from a cautious, almost cowardly, bureaucrat to a self-assured, sought after advisor and friend for Catherine who was ready and willing to remove anyone who stood in her way. He bonded with Catherine over a love of literature, philosophy, and justified hatred for Peter. More on that motherfucker.
The fact that Orlo was killed while Peter droned on about whatever he remembers eating on whatever given day… ughh. I really don’t understand the direction that this show is going in with the Catherine/Peter relationship. Am I missing something? Here’s where I say that I’ve only watched the first episode of this season so maybe there’s more to see. Still, correct me if I’m wrong, Peter doesn’t seem to have changed much except for the fact that he’s in love with Catherine and their baby now so he’s unwilling to kill her anymore. He still seems like an unintelligent, abusive jackass. The bits of season 2 where they tried to make it seem like Catherine has fallen for Peter because “he’s the only one who understands her” seemed so forced and unbelievable. You could try and tell me that the weight of the crown became an object of mutual understanding between the two of them, but I’d have to disagree. Whilst Peter used his power as emperor to be an ignorant, egomaniacal, oppressive dictator, Catherine used hers to establish progress for her country, usually to her own detriment (i.e., S1E7, S1E9, S2E6). The crown weighed differently on their heads since they fundamentally disagreed on what it should be used for. I know that a good portion of viewers seem to be into this relationship, so maybe I’m blinded by first impressions or something. But I digress.
Orlo seemed to have a lot more to offer narratively than what was shown. Being so intrinsically different from the rest of the court (lacking the salaciousness of his counterparts), the exploration of his sexuality in season 2 was surprising. I know it kind of seemed like the show was using his journey of self-discovery as a comedic device (not saying that’s bad) but I thought his relationship with Katya was so sweet. His attraction to her intellect was refreshing and their mutual bond over their love of philosophy was very cute. Mostly because their relationship implied that he doesn’t have to have the same sex drive as everyone else. I was really looking forward to seeing more of them this season. ☹️ On top of that, the subplot with Orlo’s uncle last season!!!! Was that not intriguing???? I understand that Orlo was just a supporting character that I latched onto at a bad time, but it still seems like an unfair end to him. Anyways, goodnight, everybody.

Brief considerations on finishing The Great:
The conspiracy theory hill I'm dying on that it was cancelled because execs mistakenly believed Nicholas Hoult was the star, when really he was just as excellent at scene-stealing as his character needed him to be.
I'll not forgive them for Orlo's arc. How did our ace king get sidelined into a relationship and then killed off without any attempt to give him the growth given to all the others? (I say growth, though really it's just as often regression that I mean. Anyway Archie, Grigor, Marial, even George to a degree! etc etc all change while still being themselves and still finding a place in the story. I don't know why that couldn't be done for Orlo). I'm not doing a headcount, but it does feel like the main cast and surrounding recurring characters were notably less diverse by the end of S3 - and now we don't even get to see whether Arkady gets a chance to grow from his brief flirtation with power.
NEVERTHELESS though that primed me to hate season 3 it was amazing. Holy SHIT the script on this baby. Utterly florid and absurd and vulgar and punching you in the solar plexus repeatedly about grief and love and loyalty and being human!!! Every time Elizabeth in particular opens her mouth I'm like 'this is bonkers but it's beautiful and it works so well!' Jenny-Slate-screaming-meme.png
Marial never did anything wrong ever. No this has nothing to do with Phoebe Fox's big brown eyes and sarcastic little smirk and stonking cleavage. (I am In Love).
ACTING. The whole cast is incredible, but Elle Fanning, babe, take it away! The range, darling! The emotion in an eye twitch, the scale of grief and depression measured in the angle of her pout, the mix of love and frustration that you wholly believe in, and her stompy, resolutely unladylike walk. And that dance to AC/DC right at the end. ;_;
Not to Marial stan on main again, but she was RIGHT, finally we were going to see an independent Catherine and those fuckers cancelled it!!
Everyone. I love everyone in this bar. They're all awful scheming fuckheads and I love them all.
Every time Grigor has an emotional breakdown it gives me life.
So many different women with sometimes complex, sometimes excruciatingly simple and/or dumb reasons for doing what they do, even the ones that hate each other find connection in surprising moments and then go back to hating each other, finding so many ways to be political and sexual and clever and so fucking stupid. Did I mention that I love them all especially Marial?
I still think it would be funny if I became a Bond villain billionaire and bought the rights to all of Georgia's TV channels and just constantly broadcast Archie's scenes without context. Hypocritical fucked up horny patriarch is here to help you re-evaluate your morals!
Small things like how Catherine doesn't really care about Paul <333 like yes ok she's wracked by grief for a bunch of the season, but even before, it's not like she's going round having a crisis about how to spend time with her child while ruling the country. The country is her priority.
I for one am glad Velementov isn't dying, and it's tragic that we won't get to see the arc where he sobers up and gives Agnes the ride of her life.
Watching this show is actually hugely frustrating a lot of the time and you might find yourself getting impatient with some of the characters when they're dithering about what to do. This is Good, Actually, because it gives room for that incredible script to breathe, and it reinforces the frustration and slow progress inherent to what the character of Catherine is trying to achieve.
I don't care about the 'occasionally true' bits of the story, as a vehicle for exploring what it's like to be a woman in power, as a way of looking at contemporary issues through a sumptuous, over-the-top pseudo-historical setting, it's an absolute banger.
---
ETA: I was right to post this before tag-diving!! Absolutely screaming at the hate for my bb girl who did nothing wrong ever. Honestly so glad I have no desire to get into fandom for this show at all.

This is the first of 20 shows Girls5eva has booked throughout the Midwest and Southeast. Boy, it's hard to believe I'm even here, given the start I had in life. One day there will be a biopic, and yes, of course I'll play myself. From birth, goo-goo, gaga, to death. I think there's a bomb on the yacht! Renée Elise Goldsberry as Wickie Roy in season 3 of Girls5eva (2021-present) created by Meredith Scardino

Please stop taking away the clones’ agency.
They are HUMANS.
They fuck up.
They make mistakes.
They make bad decisions and choices.
Because they are HUMAN.
One of the best parts of TBB is that we get to follow different perspectives of the clones: those who want to fight the Empire (Rex and his rebels), those who want to settle down (CF99), and those who WILLINGLY serve the Empire (formerly Crosshair, formerly Cody, currently Wolffe).
What makes these characters interesting—and HUMAN—is that they fuck up. They are not perfect. And they make decisions we do not agree with. Because they are HUMAN.
Crosshair served the Empire willingly.
Wolffe is serving the Empire willingly.
They are both complex characters who chose/choose to serve the Empire based on their own decision-making.
Stop taking away their humanity just because you don’t agree with their decisions.
