Spoiler Warning: The Brothers Hawthorne Epilogue and The Grandest Game Theory

Guys, I think we should talk. For those of us who read The Brothers Hawthorne, it's rather obvious that Eve is still at large and based on the epilogue we got, she's going to become a major threat again. Now, we know that clearly Grayson's half-sisters are going to get swept into this and I'm pretty sure it's evidence of Eve's vendetta at Grayson directly and indirectly at Avery. I'm sure that Savannah will be the Grayson sister that's mostly involved as the bait while Gigi goes to her older brother for help. But that's not really concern of this post.

What is the concern is that Eve knows Avery's secret regarding the whereabouts of Sheffield Grayson. She knows he's dead and that Avery is among the last people that saw him and also knows what happened to the man. In The Final Gambit, she was under a vow of silence because her great-grandfather, Vincent Blake, lost to Avery and under her conditions as winner, the secret of what happened to Grayson's father would be kept under wraps. With that, supposedly, our Hawthorne heiress gets her happy ending; none of the people she loves is in danger anymore except Toby, the year is up, she gets her inheritance, donates a bunch of it, creates a charity, travels the world with her boyfriend, done deal. Ideal, right? Whelp, not anymore. TBH concludes with Vincent Blake passing away and Eve was his designated heir so she now has complete control over the family fortune. Uh-oh, what does that sound like? Someone's in danger again of having their secret spilled. Eve is no longer tied down by Vincent's agreement with Avery and by all means, she could expose Sheffield's mysterious disappearance. And the thing is, I think she will.

Why do I bring that up? Because I think a fairly good foreshadowing of this in TBH is when Avery goes to talk with Gray near the end of the book and they have a moment of reflection on the aftermath. They both said that even if it was a big media circus, they could have dealt with it and that probably would have died down anyways. However, in their reality, they have not, they covered it up and have to continue keeping that secret or everything unfolds and Avery becomes liable. Which is exactly why I think that this is where part of Eve's involvement in The Grandest Game and further on in the series will lead up to. The epilogue shows from her perspective how much she envies Avery and how she is surrounded by the Hawthorne brothers but I think what stings her most is Grayson's loyalty to her. She thought she had at least him to manipulate and when the truth was out, he left her too. We know that she doesn't really have anyone's loyalty from Blake's personal security, only Slater but even he seems to be potentially set up from the get go to leave her with the obvious hints of a romance subplot with Gigi. Maybe he'll be at odds with Grayson but for Gigi, he could easily leave if things turn too dark with what happens to Savannah, if anything does, that is.

But yeah, that's my theory for TGG and I hope you enjoyed it. What are your thoughts on this?

Okay so another card dropped so delulu time (spoilers honeyyy go check the vault)

Grayson is a 8 of heart

Honestly this is just pushing the Grayson x Lyra even more cause both have heart cards anyhooow

The heart is a symbol of love peace and relaxation all things Grayson needs doesn’t have so I think my boys getting ready for a therapy arc the eight of hearts specifically has three meanings visitors and invitations which ties into how graysons running the game and is the one sending invitations and it also means the breaking up of a friendship or romance and I think hear me out it’s Grayson moving in from Emily breaking up with her kinda like how he should but couldn’t and my favorite meaning is Coming together with someone in an unexpected way through a family affair or even and tell me that’s not phone girl Lyra Kane herself

Okay so I did a little more research about Calla lilies, cause I simply couldn’t get the flower out of my mind.

So I have a couple theories first theory:

So as you can see Calla lilies are kinda deceptive flowers, with the whole looking like lilies but not actually being a lily, and hiding the true flower behind a leaf. 3 theories with this!

1. Tobias Hawthorne deceives phone girls father into doing something that later makes him commit suicide.

OR

2. Phone girls father deceives TOBIAS and once Tobias finds out he threatens him and causes him to commit suicide.

OR (final or)

3. Phone girl is going to be deceiving the Hawthornes or just the main cast in general in TGG, to perhaps learn what happened between her father and Tobias Hawthorne.

Next theory!

As you can see Calla lilies are somewhat poisonous. So perhaps Tobias had sent them to phone girls father as a subtle threat. (Who knows perhaps phone girls father had poisoned someone like I don’t know maybe Alice Hawthorne (I mean this jokingly) , so he sent them to be like “I know what you did” which scared “Thomas Thomas” so bad he commit suicide (this is kinda a joke and also a huuuuge stretch))

BONUS:

I searched the meaning of the name “Thomas” seeing if it’s a clue, since the “Thomas Thomas” name sounds clearly fake. Only for it to mean “twin” now just hoping and praying that doesn’t mean he’s related to the Hawthornes, and instead related to perhaps the Goldings? Since you know they’re the only Hawthorne island related family that hasn’t been mentioned, so obvious clue. Oh and also Thomas backwards is Samoht which apparently means “Goddess of fire” which could also hint to him being potentially related to theHawthorne island fire by being a Golding.

Ok so I was going to post my theory on why I thought jlb was going to announce a new book/novella as the last card later today but then of course this amazing fandom somehow got a synopsis and found it on good reads idek how, but I was going to post this breakdown from evidence I gathered from stalking jlb’s insta but now I’m posting it to show a timeline of when she was Writting this book and how much of a mastermind jlb is.

This going to be long so buckle in

Ok so let’s begin on October 3 2022, jlb announces TBH as the new book in the TIG universe, single handedly returning my will to live after the heartbreak I endured when Grayson ended up even more sad and alone in TFG 😭

Then we fast forward to Dec. 14 2022, we see that jlb is Writting the Grandest games.

Fast forward even more and we start getting updates about how the book is going and about her Writting process (scroll 2)

And then on March 10 2023, she turns in the first draft of TGG

This is where things get interesting, mind you at this point we know about TBH and TGG openly, but she starts talking about another secret project she’s working on, using #secret project, (March 20, 2023) (scroll 3)

She also says that she has been working on this on and off for 2.5 years (from March 2023), which if you go back is late 2020-early 2021. Which also happens to be right around the same time she was writting THL (wrote tig in 2019, released in 2020, wrote thl in 2020, released in 2021, etc)

Why is this fact important?

Bc jlb has openly stated that thl is the book she has planted the most clues/ Easter eggs in. It’s also arguably the best and most important book in the triology. (Argue with the wall if you disagree)

It’s the book where we get the most backstory and information on who this family is. I can imagine jlb Writting the book and delving into this world and, for example Toby’s past and his relationship to Avery’s mom and her past, and coming up with all these ideas she can’t really write into thl in much detail bc those events where in the past.

If she started Writting this novella, backstory, prequel, whatever during this time it would make total sense. It would also give her a chance to answer all those unanswered questions that where left while also doing us some fan service.

Now fast forward, she keeps updating on the grandest games and at the same time posting about writting this secret project, but most recently (February 7 2024) she posted this

She states that her secret project, the novella book that she has been Writting, her secret, is not going to be a secret for much longer, just a week before the vault opened, and 13 days (in Taylor swift we trust) before this all happens.

It was right there infront of us and yet we didn’t see it coming.

So yeah, she’s been Writting this book and compilation of stories for a while now, starting from when she was Writting thl. I was going to use this convince y’all her secret was a book could be a prequel but I don’t have to anymore but still I find it so interesting and I just got this out of my drafts bc why not. I had a hunch for a while but this is honestly better than I could have imagined, if it is what we are seeing :)

The grandest game: Chapter 1

GRAYSON:

I took a sip out of my cup of black coffee, glancing at my watch to see what time it was and whether or not Avery would be getting up soon, when I heard footsteps behind me.

“Good morning, Grayson. Did you bring the files from the interviews?” Avery asked, appearing beside me and taking the seat next to me at the table.

“Yes,” I said, pulling them out and placing them in front of her. “Have you found anybody yet?” She makes a face but pulls out her own folder and hands me some pieces of paper.

“Only two people, a girl named Hana Beaumont and a guy named Matthew Monroe. If you take a look at their grades, education, and patents, they’re really talented.” She says. I flipped through them, reading its contents, and was really surprised. Hana had been going to public schools for a good part of her life, until she had caught the attention of a fancy private school that created a program for low income students with spectacular grades. She started going there until students started finding out that she wasn’t actually paying to go to school, and only payed for school supplies. That’s when the bullying started. It was only a couple girls, at first, but then it became groups of people. A girl at her school went to Hana’s dad’s tiny shop and posted the video online, and that’s when it got really bad. It got to the point where the school had to kick her out, because she was causing “too much attention”. She continued going to public schools afterwards, but has yet to apply to college. Probably waiting to see if she got into The Game or not before applying. She’s 20 years old.

“And she wrote this in her admission?” I asked, feeling bad for poor Hana, who couldn’t control how much money she had. Avery nodded.

“I added a section where they could write why they wanted to be in The Game, but it was optional.” She said frowning, and I could tell she too felt upset about the way Hana was treated. Flipping to the next page, I read about Matthew Monroe. Matthew was 20 as well, but he hadn’t gone to a private school. He was in public school all his life, but was known for setting the curve and acing all his classes. He had wanted to apply to a fancy college so he could study criminology, but he didn’t have the money and if he borrowed money he would have to be in major debt all his life. And he applied to The Game, I thought, So he wouldn’t have to worry about debt. Obviously, if he were to win then he would probably be set for life, but something told me Matthew wanted to be a criminologist because he genuinely liked the field.

“So, do you think they’re good?” Avery asks, cutting into my thoughts.

“I think they’re amazing. Both smart, hardworking individuals who I’d like to see in The Game.” I said with a smile. Avery smiled back and opened her mouth to speak, when my phone suddenly rang. I excused myself before getting up and going into the hall. Once I was there, I answered the phone.

“Hello?” I say, remembering what Xander had said to me a few weeks ago. I heard silence on the other end, but only for a few seconds.

“I thought you said you would be working on my riddle.” The girl, the one that had called him before, was on the other end of the line. She had been demanding so much of me, but I had yet to even know her name.

“I was. And I have a few theories that I took from the riddle,” I said, matching her sly tone. “My first one is that a handshake begins a bet, and the not that could mean the opposite of a handshake. The opposite of a handshake is disagreement, misunderstanding, and refusal. So maybe your father and Tobias had gotten into a disagreement, or my grandfather had gone ahead and done something that your father may not have approved of or was aware of yet, which would make the misunderstanding factor make sense. But there’s also another theory that I had come up with. What if you didn’t hear “a bet”, what if you had heard ‘What begins abet’ instead?” I paused to hear her reaction, and on the other end of the phone I heard a sharp inhale.

“It’s possible.” She said. I waited for her to go on, but it seemed she wanted me to explain more. So I did.

“Abet means to aid a crime, so maybe your father had aided one of Tobias’ crimes but was the only one who got any of the blame. Or maybe he did the crime for Tobias and was so guilty that he-“ I cut myself off. I didn’t know her reaction to any of this, and I had no clue if she was still affected by her father’s death. She breathed in slowly, before speaking.

“Are you suggesting that my father and your grandfather had been caught up in some nasty business, and the guilt of it all led my father into taking his own life?” She asked me. I didn’t have to answer, and she seemed to already know the answer herself. There was silence, and I thought for a second that she might hang up, when suddenly she begins speaking again.

“Thank you for your help, Grayson Hawthorne, but I’m sure you have other things to tend to now. You are one of the game makers in “The Game”, are you not?” She asked me.

“I am. And you’re right, I do have things to tend to.” He said, thinking back to the folder that was sitting on the dining room table at this very moment. Suddenly, I realized that this was the end of our conversation. Probably for good. In a split second, I held my phone tighter and spoke before she could hang up.

“Wait,” I said, my voice cutting into the silence. “Whats your name?” I heard a sudden laugh on the other end of the line, before she replies.

“Im afraid I can’t disclose that information, Mr. Hawthorne.” She said, her voice sweet. And then she finally hung up. I still have my phone held up to my ear when Xander bursts into the room.

“Grayson, you missed, like, the entire conversation me and Jameson had with Avery! You need to stay off your phone more, you iPad kid.” He said, walking over to me and grabbing my phone out of my hands. I quickly grabbed it back and shoved it in my pocket, the phone call I just had still lingering in my mind.

“And what was the conversation about?” I asked, raising a brow at him. He grins.

“A masquerade ball! We’ve decided that we’re going to invite a hundred or so people who enlisted in The Game to mingle, and then we can narrow down who we want to be in The Game better. Obviously there will be a limit, and those who don’t want to be in The Game will still have an opportunity to come, but it’ll be a fun opportunity to get to know potential contestants better!” He said, beaming. I mulled it over, and came to the conclusion that it wasn’t such a bad idea.

“That actually might be nice. When will it take place?” I ask Xander.

“A week from now. You better wear a fancy suit! Although I wouldn’t have to tell you twice. Oh, and, don’t forget, but it’s a masquerade ball, so don’t forget to bring a face or eye mask!” He said, shouting while walking away. A masquerade ball? Full of potential contestants? How were we supposed to narrow down just 5 more people? Questions swarmed around inside my head, but I ignored them and walked towards the kitchen, where Avery and Jameson still were. I had contestant applications to go over, after all, and there were still 5 more to go.

My TV was on, the man on it mindlessly droning about the news and being perfect background noise, when suddenly a reporter comes on, talking about Avery Kylie Grambs. There wasn’t a day that went by where I didn’t hear of her. Suddenly, I was paying much more attention to what was on TV. The reporter claimed that Avery was hosting a masquerade ball, and if you wanted to be a contestant in The Game, then you had an opportunity to come. About a hundred or so people who sent admissions for The Game would be invited to Hawthorne island to mingle with other “potential contestants”, and have a better chance at getting in by speaking with the people who actually ran The Game. While the reporter was still speaking, I heard my phone ring. Fully knowing who it was, I picked it up.

“Hello?” I say.

“I assume you saw the news as well.” She said, her voice low.

“You assumed right. A masquerade ball, huh?” I say, knowing exactly what she’s planning.

“It’d be the perfect time. Not only would they not be able to see your face, but I’m sure your voice would be different too, due to the mask.” She said. It was true. A masquerade ball was the best time to do it. But still, doubt and suspicion crept into my mind.

“Im not doing this if I end up not getting my end of the deal.” I say, my voice low and dangerous. She makes a hmm noise, before speaking.

“Trust me, you will get all the information you’ll need about your father, and some money too. All you need to do is get in The Game, and leave the rest to me. Can you do that?” She asks. I knew that doing this was risky, that she could screw up at anytime and easily drag me into her mess. But I also knew what was in it for me, my end of the bargain. And in the end, it would be worth it.

“I can, Eve.”

Games Untold Theory!

I'm just gonna get right into it. So, we are able to guess who the subjects are for most of the stories – except for Pain at the Right Gun.

I know that some of us are guessing that this one could be about Gray and Lyra (and I personally started to believe that too), but last night I had a sudden thought.

What if it isn't about Gray and Lyra but about Tobias and Alice?

One of the main reasons I don't think it's Gray and Lyra is because the events in Games Untold happen before the start of TGG and plus, JLB mentioned that the stories revolve around the characters from the original trilogy – AND the new Grandest Game characters do not appear.

Now, for my reasons as to why I think it's Tobias and Alice. I mentioned before that I believe Alice will be included in this book because of the pearl necklace on the cover. As for Tobias, I think he'll be included because of this:

The key. There's a key on the cover and the blade of the key (the part which you put in a lock) is shaped like a letter H. Tobias once said that the keys he made for the key challenge he created (the one where they had to find which key would open the door to Hawthorne House) told the story of his life. So this could be an indication that he's included.

But how could Tobias and Alice's relationship relate to the title of their short story, if it really was about them?

Pain at the Right Gun. There are several meanings for the word "gun". It could mean a weapon. Or it could also mean a bicep; muscular arms.

WARNING: This will start to sound like I'm stretching TOOOOO far but I'll try to make this make sense.

If we took "gun" to mean bicep, then it would mean Pain at the Right Bicep. Right bicep can kind of relate to right-hand, as in right-hand man. And I believe that Tobias and Alice had quite a close relationship since Tobias mentioned that Alice was the woman that he loved wholly (with that Hawthorne love).

Bicep pain is caused by muscle strain. So what if this is pointing to a strain in their relationship? As I said before, whatever Jameson heard in Prague (which was presumably Alice's words) was quite unnerving towards the Hawthorne family. It even seemed as though Alice didn't want to have anything to do with them. She didn't even come back to Hawthorne House during the old man's funeral – she didn't even have an intention of coming back to see her grandsons. And she warned Jameson to not talk about the fact that she was alive to anyone. What if there was a strain in Tobias and Alice's relationship and she ran away? Pain at the Right Gun. The pain could also be due to the fact that Alice kind of destroyed Tobias by running away. Tobias said "once you love the way a Hawthorne loves, there is no going back."

"If she is the one, someday, she will destroy you."

NEXT – Yes, I know there are calla lilies which point to Lyra on the cover. But remember – Nan mentioned that Tobias sent flowers to Lyra's dad's funeral... and who is to say that the flowers weren't calla lilies? Lyra's father gave her a calla lily before he sh0t himself de@d. He said "a Hawthorne did this". Somehow, I think the calla lilies mean more than a parting gift from Lyra's dad to Lyra.

And I just thought of something... WHAT IF... Alice is related to Lyra and her family in some way? What if she knew what Tobias did and it led to her running away?

I was reexamining the cover again and I think the wand might actually be a blade.

If you take a second look at it, the wand doesn't look circular. The shadow looks like when you see the glint on a blade and you see that line that divides it down the middle. Also, notice I circled another area. Those branches or whatever they are that attach at the handle of the blade are connected to the chain. Remember my Savannah-Gigi theory about the chain and necklace charm tying them together? Well, if I'm right and if Grayson's tie is actually a dagger, then this could be his symbol and tied to his sisters' symbols, showing their interconnectedness.

I’m rereading The Brothers Hawthorne and I realized that Lyra never specifically said that Tobias was the Hawthorne that had to do with her fathers death, it could have been Alice (then that would connect Alice with Lyra in the next book). She just says that her father told her “A Hawthorne did this” but who knows it could be Tobias still.

Thoughts that I wanted to share about the brothers Hawthorne/ the grandest game bc I don’t wanna make a million posts about each one 💀

1: Phone girls dad literally shot himself ON. HER. BIRTHDAY. 😭😭

2: Skye Hawthorne MIGHT be in the grandest game, because when Avery got bombed and Ricky and skye got arrested for it, they found out that it actually wasn’t them which means they prob got out of jail (maybe not Ricky but probably skye) and she might be controlling one of the players

3: WE’LL PROBABLY GET TO SEE A SUNSHINE X GRUMPY TROPE!! (Mathias and Gigi)

4: we’ll see which 7 contestants avery will pick for the game!! (While I was writing that instead of contestants I accidentally put tributes 💀)

5: we might learn more about Toby’s backstory (or just the Hawthorne backstories in general, like Zara’s, nans or Alice’s)

6: speaking of Alice, SOMEHOW THAT OLD GRANDMAS GOING TO BE ALIVE

7: this isn’t really a prediction but more just like a possible hint for the grandest game, but when grayson tells his brothers about the riddle “what begins a bet? Not that”, Jameson says this

He says “what’s the opposite of a handshake?” And I found a picture online that shows multiple different options of what could be the opposite of a handshake

Basically most of the words on there kind of show “misinterpretation” or just different words for some sort of mistake, so would that mean that the “beef” (im just gonna call it that bc I don’t rlly know what went down) between tobias and thomas thomas was maybe accidental?? Or maybe they got into a disagreement that ended in thomas ending his life? All the book really shows is that one paragraph (that I highlighted in green) that talks about what Jameson thought of the riddle, and then Jameson was talking to Avery about the game (probs bc jlb didn’t wanna drop too many hints lmao) And then if you add it in with the “abet” theory ⬇️

It said that one of the opposites of a handshake were “refusal” and “disagreement”, so what if tobias had wanted thomas to aid one of his crimes and thomas refused, and maybe tobias gave him an ultimatum which is why he shot himself?? It’s so confusing bc what would tobias even do that was so horrible that thomas had to shoot himself, I really don’t know. but if anyone has some theory’s on this pls lmk! 🫶

8: holy guacamole 7 was a long one, but anyway i feel like there are definitely more hints on the grandest game in the brothers Hawthorne then there were in the final gambit, even though in (i think tig is the one that clue was from?) the inheritance games “special” edition bc idk what their called it said “hints in the final gambit”. (although one loose end from tig was David Golding, and @riddles-n-games had a good theory about that) But i read the final gambit entirely and didn’t find a single clue other than David, so that’s kinda weird (unless somebody else found something else they found interesting in that book?)

9: Eve might also be behind one of the players, or just trying to get involved with the game so she could get the cash prize or whatever else it is that that psycho needs 🙄

10: we’ll (most likely, bc I’m 99.9% sure that she’ll be in tgg) see what phone girl looks like and see which one of us were right 😜
