As usual (other than last December, as I am a busy and forgetful little squid), it’s the 1st of an even month, and it’s open day in The First Drafthouse! For the next 24 hours (or fifty arrivals), the server is welcoming new people to join in the toony chaos. That said, please keep in mind that-

The First Drafthouse no longer hosts D&D games anymore, any and all games happen off-server

The First Drafthouse is sticking around, it’s just more of a social hub than anything else, and it’s a fair bit quieter than its been in the past. We’re still here to talk toons, post art, and even organise D&D games that will take place in other servers or similar, but please do not go clicking the link above expecting to immediately join in on a game.

eddie and you love going to the movies, barreling out right after school or sneaking into midnight shows of the latest horror releases, spending full weekends in the theater to watch your favorites over and over again. of course you guys sneak in your own snacks and treats, but you're respectful about it, always making sure to clean up after yourselves. eddie'd worked a few shifts as an usher one summer and christ how he hated cleaning up after the slobs -- he vowed to never be that kind of customer.

oh, but, when you two first see the trailer for gremlins on tv? he's already staring at you and grinning when you whip your head around to him.

"um. we're seeing that," you state matter-of-factly.

eddie snorts, about to say something in agreement, and then gasps, full shock,

"...babe... BABE!"

"what??"

"that's the SAME DAY ghostbusters is out."

wayne just watches from his recliner with a smirk as you -- unsure of how to express your excitement -- begin dog-piling yourself on eddie while cheering, your boyfriend cackling all the while.

that friday, eddie and you aren't at school, oh no. in fact, you're one of the first ones in line at the theater, 'giddy' not even covering it as you both recite lines from the trailers, discussing theories and what you expected.

ghostbusters is the first flick of your double-feature -- to say you both enjoyed it is a heavy understatement -- and going into the second movie of the day you're beyond ready for whatever gremlins throws at you.

the set-up part of the film has you both hooked -- hell, just the trailer had you hooked, but when you finally see gizmo for the first time, whining over how cute he is, eddie is cheesing hard and squeezing you into him. he loves the movies as much as you, but watching you watch movies? sometimes that was even better. eddie was a sucker for your commentary.

he's scolding the screen as every mogwai rule is eventually broken, fully immersed, fully engrossed, fully ready to fight stripe with his bare hands. the moment the antagonist dares to spit upon sweet, innocent gizmo, eddie has a vendetta.

although, that's not to say he doesn't absolutely love every minute of the gremlins being gremlins. he's cackling and pointing, elbowing you excitedly through the whole chaos montage. and when it comes to mrs. deagle's turn for a visit, he's on the edge of his seat just waiting to see what will happen.

when the old lady goes soaring, you both along with the audience are clapping and cheering at the grisly yet much-deserved demise. barney could rest easy now, poor dog.

now, eddie would never openly admit it, but he was a sucker for those old disney movies -- ever since he was a kid. when the gremlins are all together in the theater, watching snow white and entranced by the dwarves' working song, he's singing along with them too, with a grin so wide his cheeks are hurting.

somewhat surprisingly to you, eddie is near hiding his face in your shoulder when stripe finally meets his end, whining sounds of distaste as the creature melts and perishes. you just coo and pat his cheek, while your eyes are glued to the screen in delight.

you could swear as well you hear him sniffle when gizmo bids billy goodbye as the movie draws to a close. you don't judge, though. you're definitely crying a little, too.

you'd gotten to the theater early in the afternoon, and after two flicks it still wasn't too late in the day, but the excitement had definitely wiped the pair of you out. eddie leans into you heavily, almost sad, pouting and squeezing his arm around your shoulders as yours does around his waist.

"...i want a gizmo..."

you snort softly and tilt your head to peck his cheek, "i know, sweetie, i know."

in bed that night, curled up together and yawning in-between reminiscing in the day you'd had, eddie is about to get up for a glass of water when he pauses.

"what's up, babe?" you question softly, rubbing his back. eddie shuffles a bit and turns his head to look at you, bemused and smirking.

"... what if there's gremlins out there..? ghouls..."

you can't help the laughter, giving him a playful shove out of bed to which he whines and makes a show of tiptoeing to the door, cracking it open and peaking out.

"well, then, you better go bust 'em! show 'em who's boss, baby, you got it."

and, of course, eddie most definitely is a gremlin, as he sheepishly re-enters the room with the glass of water and a plate full of food for you both to share. tired before, he's wired after the late-night feast, leaping around you sat in bed asking repeatedly as you're wracked with giggles, 'who you gonna call?? ED-BUSTERS!'

the next few days neither of you can go a full sentence without quoting the films at each other, and of course you go back over the weekend multiple times, at least once with wayne after convincing him to join you.

a few weeks after release and it continues when eddie is crouched in front of the tv, grumbling softly and smacking the sides, adjusting the antenna while the screen shifts between shades of fuzz. he huffs, calls to you while you're in the kitchen. "hey! theres GREMLINS in here. we got gremlins in the tv."

After 7 years of loyal service, my dear laptop is pretty much due to kick the bucket any day now. The screen is busted, one of the keys is missing, so I had to substitute a bluetooth keyboard, and now the fans are going out so we're overheating really really fast.

I use my laptop for my art, my writing, my social connections, my d&d games with folks from the First Drafthouse extended universe, and a bunch of other stuff, and I really can't handle losing those things right now.

If I can sell 10 of my 45$ voice portraits, drawings I make of people's voices as they appear to my synesthesia, I'll be able to afford a really cheap pc to replace my laptop, so! Emily watches "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes"

This is a good adaptation of the book. But it's long. The book is split up into three parts and the movie is as well (there are title cards that tell us so). And there is a palpable sense that, when they get to the third act, it's like "oh fuck we have more movie still?

That's because the actual Games take place in the second act and that is more "cinematic". (Actually then spend longer on the Games than I think they did in the book. At least there is more about what Lucy Gray is actually doing and we see more of the Tributes. Some of the deaths are changed but it hits the emotional beats.)

If you liked the book, I'd recommend it. I'll be interested to see how people who didn't read the book feel about the third part. Because that is the part that is kind of rushed through. Not enough "action."

As I said earlier, I went to a "Panem Party" showing at Alamo Drafthouse. Only one lady dressed up for real and we got swag. A rose, a quill and a Capitol Academy. I thought that last was odd. I know they gave away mockingjay pins for the other movies but who wants a Capitol Academy pin? Does that mean I support the Hunger Games?

Anyway, I continue to be desperate to know what happened in the 11th Hunger Games. Gaul says the President has given her another year, implying that it was still "dying out" despite Snow's advancements during the 10th.

We know (from the Capitol Couture website, which may or may not be canon) that Mags Flannagan won the 11th Hunger Games and she was the first victor to go on a Victory Tour. We only know a little bit about Mags from Catching Fire though. I think the Victory Tour has to be punishment for something. Why do they make the victors go around a look at the families of people they may have killed?

They also say she is "small" in CF so even though she is from a traditionally competitive district (one with well-fed kids), I doubt she was an "odds" on favorite. Her skill is making a fish hook which isn't an advantage if they still compete in the old arena.

I have a headcanon that this is when Gaul starts to manipulate the arena more, and puts creatures hidden about. Possibly in pits--as Mags would only have an advantage in water. The ending of this film did not disuade me from that notion.

Just got back from the movie. The theater was in the middle of this hipster village type deal. Trendy shops and a wine bar.

I walked into the Alamo Drafthouse and the people at the front just kinda looked at me as I walked by. I had my ticket ready on my phone, but no one scanned it or looked at it. I don't know if it is always like that, but maybe next time I should try not buying a ticket and see what happens.

The large format fancy theater was as far away from the entrance as possible. I should have brought my cane. But I made it okay. It was indeed large and fancy. The seats were very comfortable and had electric reclining. There was also a button to summon a waiter which felt very high tech. And he would duck down super low as he walked in front of everyone. He looked like a penguin scurrying along. I ordered a pizza and it showed up just in time for the movie. It was pretty tasty.

The video quality was fine. I honestly didn't see a huge difference with the 4K laser projector, but the large screen was nice. I might be spoiled by my fancy HDR, 2000 nit TV. Projection just can't do that.

The front audio was much better than the last theater. Very clear voices. But the bass was a little boomy. Unfortunately I think they calibrate the audio for when there are more people there. 100+ humans in a space add a lot of absorption and diffusion. But there were maybe 8 people total and there wasn't anything to suck up the bass.

The Atmos was not even noticeable except in one or two scenes. That was disappointing. Atmos was one of the main reasons I chose that theater. I don't know if they skipped getting a Dolby calibrator or something. The side speakers were audible, but the ceiling speakers never made themselves known. Not even in the thunderstorm scene.

The ceilings were extremely high, so I'm wondering if the speakers were just too far away. Inverse square law would dictate they would need a lot of power and volume to cover that distance. This is probably why Dolby officially certifies theaters and this wasn't one of them.

This is what a front speaker in a theater looks like. There are usually at least 3 of them. Bigger spaces might do an array of 6--all behind the screen.

That is 7 feet tall, 200 pounds, and takes 3000 watts of power.

And you'll usually have 3 of these dual 18" subwoofers.

These beasts require 4000 watts of power and are also 200 pounds.

A typical theater Atmos speaker is like this.

About 30 inches tall and handles 350 watts.

All of those speakers have to cover about the same distance. Meaning the ceiling speakers were at a major size and power disadvantage.

So I think the theater was too big and too tall for Atmos to work effectively. You probably have to trade off a big screen or good sound. I'm going to try an official Dolby theater next time to see the difference.

The movie itself was okay. Maybe a 6 out of 10. A few good laughs, some fun action, but the humor was very hit and miss.

Now, I'm not just saying this because they are a creep, but Ezra is just... a lot. They do their funny jokey thing and it gets old very fast. It was okay when they were a side character, but when they are leading a movie, it fizzles. And then there is a second Ezra in the movie and they do the funny jokey thing turned up to 11.

Way too much Ezra.

But then Michael Keaton enters and he's just fantastic. I got such a rush of nostalgia from the 1989 Batman. That was probably my favorite movie for a good 3 years. 8 year old me was so happy to see my first Batman again. They even forced him to do some super cringe fanservice lines--and he nailed them.

He was like, "I'm going to take this bullshit line and make it awesome. Because I'm the goddamn Batman."

And Sasha Calle as Supergirl was also excellent. Though she was very underutilized. But if they can keep her, I think she could be a fan favorite.

The big complaint about The Flash has been the CGI. And I would say 75% of the CGI was great. There was a reveal of the Batwing that looked stunning. Supergirl flying was great. The vehicles were great. All of the invisible effects like backgrounds and set extensions were flawless. There was a big car chase that looked decent. There were plenty of top notch VFX in this movie. And I think the artists should be proud of those.

The stuff that didn't work was mostly just because the situations were unrealistic or the art direction was poorly done or they just didn't spend enough time polishing the effect.

When they animated Micheal Keaton doing jumpy flippy ninja moves, it didn't sell perfectly. And the speed and power of the Kryptonions was not nearly as well done as in Man of Steel.

But I know why people said the CGI was terrible. Though I don't actually think it was the CGI that was bad. I'm pretty sure they just made a poor aesthetic choice. Flash goes into the Speedforce and they cleary wanted to make it trippy and otherworldly. I don't think they were going for photorealism. I think they intentionally wanted everything to be in the uncanny valley. Unfortunately the style they chose looked more like a video game.

They were trying to do a Dr. Strange type effect and it just didn't work. It ended up being more... Lawnmower Man.

The only truly terrible effects were CG renders of people they couldn't get to do proper cameos because they were fired or were dead. Usually you need a 3D scan to do a CG double and it's hard to do that on dead people. The best was Admiral Tarkin in Rogue One, but they spent months and months on that.

CG Henry Cavill was probably the worst effect in the entire film and I'm guessing that really pissed people off.

The Flash running also looked bad, but that was 100% because Ezra Miller runs like a goof.

I have no idea why they run like that, but it looks so dumb and ruins the speed effect. Like, if you took them out and put someone running normally into the effect, it would have looked super neat.

And the only other VFX that didn't quite work was these slow motion falling babies. They looked photorealistic, but something about animating a falling baby in slow motion did not look right. Again, I don't think this was bad CGI. I think it was just a visual that was impossible to make realistic.

I know that sounds like a lot of bad effects, but that was every bad effect out of 2000+ total. Maybe 15 shots out of those 2000 were memorably bad. But the bad shots are always the most memorable and I guess that is why you don't hear folks talking about all of the flawless ones.

If you do see this movie and you haven't heard Kevin Smith's Superman story, you definitely should watch that first. Because the best gag in the movie will go over your head otherwise.

Sooooo, yeah... that was my night at the movies. On the drive there I got to see the Arch and downtown and it was beautiful. And on the drive home, Google decided to take me through every spooky ass neighborhood in St. Louis at midnight.

Big fan of toonkind stuff and I wanted to ask about the toonkind server open days? During october i saw that they open on the 1st of every even month, however during dec i didnt see anything about it. Is the server no longer open? Or did i just miss the invite somehow.

Its very likely that i somehow missed it, so if i did apologies in advance! Just wanted to check to be sure :)

First up I just wanna say that I'm real glad that people are still interested in joining in, it's a-okay to ask questions, and thanks for being patient while I took (and am still kinda taking) time offline and couldn't respond.

To quickly answer your questions: First Drafthouse open days are still happening, the next is scheduled for 1st February

Basically what happened in December is that-- because I'm the one that's entirely in charge of organising, announcing, and generally keeping an eye on open days, if I don't keep a close track of the date, or can't get on discord and tumblr to sort the various links and announcements, open day kinda just slips by the wayside.

Sometimes I remember quickly and open day happens on the 2nd rather than the 1st (e.g. last June, when I was An Distracted Fool). And then other times I'm dealing with so much Life Stuff that it just doesn't happen at all, and the other mods and I agree it's less confusing and stressful to just skip one.

I'm sorry for any confusion or concern it's caused you folks on the outside of things, I promise that was never the intention! Things should go as scheduled from here on out, though, so you'll still definitely get a chance to join the server

Hi! Long-time follower here ig lmao. I'm moving to Chicago next week, any recommendations for stuff (to do/eat/see/go, etc.)?

oh lol this is such a huge question! and it also depends which area you're moving to. ummmm if you like theatre, there's a TON, more than i can keep track of tbh. but if you want something cool and late-night, the neo-futurists is a very Chicago thing to do. i think the two most famous regional theatres in chicago are the goodman and steppenwolf. they both do great work, and they're a good starting point. also shout out to the court theatre, blank theatre company, theatre wit, trap door theatre, a red orchid theatre, and lyric opera. i've adored at least one show from each of these companies (and they all do VERY different work).

in my neighborhood (andersonville), check out the bookstores women and children first, and uncharted books. and if you like thrifting, check out brown elephant. (i'm also addicted to going to tuesday night piano karaoke at elixir in andersonville lol. if you end up going sometime, there's like a 50% chance i'll be there)

the chicago symphony is where i spend most of my evenings these days tbh (the promo code "student" will get you a ticket discount lol)

the art institute is just as good as you've heard. the MCA also rules.

some of my personal favorite live music venues are: SPACE in Evanston, Old Town School of Folk Music, city winery in the loop, and constellation. i like these venues because they have chairs and i'm tired of going to concerts where i'm constantly bumping into twinks with $12 white claws, but also because they program great music at relatively affordable prices.

if you like dancing/nightlife, i like sidetrack, queen on sunday nights at smartbar (amazing djs), a diy queer drag party called boots (they're on instagram), and berlin (berlin is where the cool queers go, and has arguably the best drag in chicago--keep in mind it does get a bit crowded and claustrophobic). (NVM, BERLIN WORKERS JUST ANNOUNCED THEY’RE ON STRIKE, SO DON’T GO THERE LOL). the drag competition on thursday nights at charlie's is also a fabulous time.

oh and if you like going to movies, you have to check out the gene siskel film center (the best programming in the city), the music box (the COOLEST movie theatre in the city), and facets. be sure to look into the series (serieses?) that these theatres program—they do a lot of fabulous screenings of older movies, and also some great film festivals. i also go to the alamo drafthouse a lot for convenience, even tho they piss me off. but they do sometimes have cool programming.

I finally got all my notes down and somewhat coherent from the Livestream Q&A at Alamo Drafthouse screenings.

I have no clue if these are repeat answers from previous Q&As because I avoided them to not be spoiled more about the movie

- Glen invited his sophomore year creative writing teacher to the Texas premiere (May 15th). He asked his teacher if he could write screenplays in class instead of poems or prose. The teacher was very supportive and would bring in Linklater screenplays to go over.

- First meeting with Adria, Linklater says to Glen “I don’t want to tip the scales but you should really meet her.”

- They meet, Glen says the actress to play Madison had to be someone the audience could see themselves throw everything away for. And Glen saw that Adria is that kind of woman. Both Glen and Adria were in the middle of Dry January (Rick joked “what’s that?” And Glen replied “you’re always in dry January”) and Glen is like yes I want to work with you and we should celebrate so they decide to get one tequila and then five hours later they are sloshed calling for rides.

- They consulted with Adria about Madison’s choices and possible dialogue. They joked how she was an unofficial writer of the movie.

- Linklater said he wanted Adria and Glen to lead the conversation on the intimate sex scenes and Adria would come in with references of artistic/tasteful photos and they incorporated them into the film. She specifically mentioned the sock pull and wine scene were referenced in the photos. She said she’s never been given the opportunity to give this much input to scenes she’s working in.

- They did all these references and had fun thinking of way to put these intimate scenes together but when it came to film there was a pause moment of realization that they had to be the ones in these scenes

- During pandemic Glen brought the article to Linklater and Rick is like yeah I’ve read it before and Glen is like there’s a story here. They had to make a decision to verge from the truth to get a really good story out of it. Once they made that decision, the creative flow just flowed. Spent a few hours a day on zoom talking about it and putting the script together

- Talked a bit about Skip Hollingsworth and his book about the Austin serial killer and joked with Glen about doing a movie about that

- Rick would talk on the phone with the real Gary Johnson when they were in preproduction. He said that they were planning on having him visit the set, but he quickly passed due to a pulmonary thing.

- Glen said he likes his chair of actor for now and being a director would be far in the future. Rick said Glen is a storyteller and he’ll work on anything that he deems a good story. Glen said he’s in the right place, learning from the right person.

- Glen was in charge of the costume. Rick hadn’t seen a lot of the costumes until day off because they were putting finishing touches on the script late in the game. The stylist nicknamed the red headed character Tilda Weasley and when he was fully dressed had a moment of “oh no, I think I’m attracted to Tilda Weasley”

- No costume was on the cutting room floor. Each of the costumes were inspired by the article directly. There were a few more ideas in the script writing process, but those were narrowed down to what we see on the screen by the time they got to shooting.

- Glen shadowed a film studies professor (Friend of Rick’s) who also got to read the script and told them that they needed to keep the pie line in the movie because it didn’t make it to one of the final drafts.

- The interviewer (even said this may be in poor taste) asked Adria about her recent project Los Frikis. When she spoke about it, she had so much love and passion in her eyes about this project and she said that they would be heading back out on the festival circuit with it.

Aliens with my dad at Alamo Drafthouse. Nothing special just a showing but its both of ours' favorite movie so he wanted to take me.

Near Dark vampire brunch of Alamo. They used to on Sunday mornings have a local band come in and play music over old vampire movie footage and then play a vampire classic. It was a 35mm print. Dirty and dingy and dark print but wow how special

Saw at Mile High Horror fest with Tobin Bell in attendance. They did the Q&A before the movie for some reason and he gave away all the twists to an audience with at least a dozen newbies there. It was so funny.

I barely remember this but my dad did take me to the 1997 OT Star Wars releases and those are pretty much my first concrete memories of a movie theater.

Titanic 2012 3D release me and a friend ditched afternoon college classes and went and it was just us and a ton of old people.
