“Marriage of Heaven and Earth” Norman Lindsay reblogged from dorkvader
In other words, one cannot live without the other, which is what marriage is all about, the proles. I have always asked myself why have the Jews always been persecuted, disliked or hated. I even sympathize with them full of empathy. Perhaps it is a misconception difficult to separate the heart from the soul, the Jew from the proverbial Shylock that Shakespeare so well defined in the Merchant of Venice. Like separating the German Nazi from the "volks". The question is what separates the Jew from the Zionist because all Zionist are Jews has enabled me to understand the JEW from the Zionist and AIPAC but find it difficult to separate their communal evilness as a community. Such evilness can only be destroyed and so will their enablers because such hatred can only be corroded from within.

John Demjanjuk - The devil next door.
Trigger warning: This essay may be upsetting to some readers. This is an essay about a documentary with real people, real stories and real facts. Read with caution!
Ivan the terrible: The devil next door.
Netflix have recently released a limited time series that is based upon a psychopath that’s was a Nazi war time criminal, he was called ‘Ivan the terrible’. The series started off with showing footage of John Demjanjuk (Ivan) smiling and waving in America but soon his world would come crashing down. Ivan the terrible definitely lived up to his name during his time in Treblinka camp. Ivan was famous for brutally harassing and torturing helpless Jews in their last moments of life where he would shove them into the chamber with a bayonet spear where some peoples flesh would be hanging from their backs. During the holocaust they unfortunately gassed the Jews with chambers but after this happened Ivan would go in into the chamber and cut breasts off women and young girls and would cut ears and noses off of the victims upon the chambers after he had done this the other inmates were allowed to enter the chamber to take the bodies. Although numerous witnesses claimed that after Ivan would emerge from the chambers they would discover people’s skulls caved in, knife wounds, eyes poked out and pregnant women would have been stabbed in the stomach. During his time as an SS officer he was well known as the worst SS officer. Although something that was shocking was all the violent acts he committed he wasn’t ordered to do so he decided to do this on his own accord.
Although on the other hand John Demjanjuk is also seen as respectable US citizen who loves his family and neighbours. Therefore, his family described him as a gentle giant and someone people respected and has never shown any warning signs or violence towards anyone. They seemed to know him as this gentle guy who never do any wrong to anyone.
At the start of the first episode it showed the FBI looking into trying to find war criminals that maybe living in the US when they came across the psychotic SS officer Ivan the terrible. They started to gather information on the ex SS officer when they stumbled across John Demjanjuk who was living in Seven Hills, Ohio with his wife and two children. They arrested John Demjanjuk on charges of crimes against humanity but they were unable to prosecute him as he has not committed these crimes in America so they flew him to Ukraine where he would face prosecution. When he entered the Ukraine, he requested to kiss the ground which was denied when he entered Ukrainian bordered he smirked whilst saying ‘Shalom’ which seemed mocking for reasons relating to the accusations he has been accused of. Throughout the trial he denied all accusations and claimed the FBI had mixed him up with someone else. During the trial he was contained in a Ukraine prison.
John Demjanjuks case was the first trial to be televised in Ukraine where many tuned in to watch it on the tv or listen to it on a radio. The trial started off with John entering the courtroom with his lawyers where he was listened to various witnesses what were contained within the Treblinka camps that had come across Ivan. The trial started off with a witness that was from the Treblinka where he talked about his horrific experiences of watching his family and loved ones being ripped from him and forced into the chambers where he would then have to empty later he explained details that were upsetting. Although as many people were shedding a tear Johns lawyer objected to hearing the witnesses’ story because he claimed that it was unnecessary to hear the details of the story and how irrelevant the story was. Although luckily the judge saw how disrespectful the objection was so he argued with the lawyer and dismissed the objection.
During the second episode it showed more scenes of the case but this time it showed to be more intense as more witnesses talked about their experiences the more tension that built up within the court which even lead to people standing up and shouting ‘murdered’ ‘the bloods on your hands’ towards John. Although the court took a turn when one witness was telling his story of how his experience still traumatises him to this day when he then asked the judge if he could approach the defendant to look within his eyes because he claimed that he would be able to tell if it was Ivan if he looked into his eyes. Although it was a strange request the judge allowed it so he walked across the courtroom and looked within is eyes but his attitude soon changed when John reached out to try and shake the witnesses hand although some may see it as an act of kindness he was surprised and slightly scared by his action and took this to offence and started shouting ‘how dare you try to shake my hand!’ where he was then escorted back to his witness stand he then told the judge that it was Ivan ‘without a doubt with his murderous eyes’.
As the court case carried on the more news was being released by the international news that was being broadcasted all over Ukraine and the US but as more news was being released the more people hated him for the crimes he was being accused of by the victims that had shocked all the ears that had to hear of all the sad and horrific experiences of the survivors.
Although the whole court case was about to change due to a piece of evidence that was found which could free Mr. Demjanjuk. John Demjanjuks lawyers found a statement that was written by one of the witnesses claiming that they had killed Ivan in a Jewish riot that happened in camps all over the country. Once this piece of evidence had emerged they question the witness who claims that when he looked into his eyes that the defendant was Ivan so when he was called to the stand he said he has lived everyday having the doubt in the back of his mind that he didn’t kill him but when he looked into his eyes he realised that he didn’t kill him because he was standing right in front of him. Surprisingly this upset John which made him stand up and shout ‘Liar! Liar! Liar!’ claiming that he is Ivan but one the witness continued talking about how he killed Ivan he sat upon the stand smirking whilst listening to the defendant which gives me the impression that he finds it funny that the witnesses thought he had killed him.
Although that wasn’t the end of it because new evidence had emerged in terms of comparing the SS officers ID card next to an image of Mr. Demjanjuk where they showed similarities in facial features but soon Mr. Demjanjuks lawyers were very quick to debunk this claiming that the ears weren’t the same as the ID image this drove to people being 50/50 over the image comparison which then led to lawyers claiming that the ID that belonged to Ivan was fake and Soviet evidence couldn’t be trusted.
Where evidence would be confusing they questioned ex Nazi officers what would happen in the gas chambers and how it would be operated where they then used various images of Nazi officers where they all instantly picked out Ivan’s photos saying they remember him from the camps. Later during the court, they claimed that if Ivan was to be found guilty then he would die from capital punishment of hanging.
After many days of court appearances, the judge had come to a verdict. John Demjanjuk was found guilty and was charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity and he was sentenced to death. Although many years later he appealed to the court to reclaim his innocence due to new evidence being found. John Demjanjuk appealed to the court where he tried to claim his innocence due to new evidence the court overturned the death penalty and but he had to serve a penalty of 5 years in prison.
Although this wasn’t the end to his years of prosecution he was then charged 27,900 counts of acts for each person that was killed in Sobibor where he was an execution gas chamber operator because of this he tried to appeal for innocence. Although during his time during his appeal he stayed within a German nursing where he died 17 March 2012 (aged 91). Mr. Demjanjuk died from myelodysplastic syndrome which is a blood and bone marrow disease.
My conclusion:
In my opinion I have come to the conclusion that I believe Mr. Demjanjuk was the Nazi death camp officer where he viciously murdered and tortured innocent and helpless people. After evaluating the evidence that was presented in court I believe that the images that were compared show similarities that show they are the same person due to his eyebrows, eye gap and the crease the appears between his cheeks and mouth. Also, after listening to the stories of the survivors that were in the Treblinka camp that had to deal with Ivan and the traumatic events that happened and seeing ex SS officers pick out Ivan from a whole book of other officers and admitting straightway that they knew who he was and remembered him from the camps. During through his court case I noticed that he barely said anything and never showed any emotion especially during the survivors telling their story whilst the rest of the spectators were crying due to the amount of sad and horrific details although for me this is a red flag because psychopaths tend to show no emotion especially when they don’t understand how to express it to certain people and environments. Also, certain actions that he had taken during the whole time of his prosecution in terms of when he arrived in Ukraine he smirked whilst saying ‘shalom’ which to me seems cocky and mocking them for the actions that he’s being accused of and when he tried to shake a survivor’s hand because why would you try to shake their hand during court especially when shocked and scared him. Mr. Demjanjuk also came across as careless when a survivor was talking about how he believed that he killed Ivan during a riot he was smirking which gives me the impression he’s mocking him for believing that he killed him and maybe he pretended to be dead that’s why he believed that he had killed him but he didn’t maybe he finds it funny.
My final thought is, I believe that Mr. Demjanjuk is a psychopath due to failing to showing any emotion throughout the trial and barely blinking which shows to me in normality because everyone has to eventually have to blink. Also, the fact that he barely spoke and was smirking whilst a survivor was explaining how he thought he had killed him. to me this shows signs that he is psychotic and seems to be mocking the court and survivors that have had the courage to share their story so I believe that Mr. Demjanjuk is psychotic.

To trick or be tricked - How certain literary concepts tie into Chôbe’s story arc
Disclaimer : This is a Chôbe rant an opinion piece more than essay, though I still use the many elements provided by the source material to justify my points. It’s also pretty spoilery so make sure you’re properly caught up before reading.
This write-up will be about the literary concepts of the trickster and the tricked character, based on the theme of the Faustian Bargain, a certain Japanese tale and how they tie into Chôbe’s character arc.
I. Faustian Bargain
First thing first: what is a Faustian Bargain, and where does it come from? Well, it comes from European stories involving a character who decides to bargain with the Devil to obtain what he or she desires in life. In exchange, their soul would be taken to Hell for eternal damnation. Initially a cautionary tale of a religious nature, its moral aspects still has a universal tone: it is all about sacrificing one’s personal morals and spiritual values in order to gain wealth or other benefits. The most famous literature works about it are Christopher Marlowe’s The Tragical Story of Doctor Faustus (1592), Shakespeare’s Macbeth (1606) and Goethe’s Faust (1808), though more modern literary works use this trope in the story: Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890), Ira Levin’s Rosemary’s Baby (1967), as well as comics, movies and video games, such as Hellblazer (1993), Death Note (2003), Sleepy Hollow (1999), The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), Skyrim DLC Dragonborn (2012/2013) or The Witcher 3 DLC Hearts of Stone (2015). In Europe, a lot of local legends about Devil’s Bridges are also tied into this idea: the architect asked the help of the Devil in exchange for the first soul to cross the bridge. The architect would then outsmart the Devil by sending a cat, and the Devil would refuse to add the last stone to the bridge in reaction.
And like I said, meddling with supernatural entities and getting punished for it as a form of cautionary tale isn’t a Europe-only thing, it’s a common form of storytelling at a universal level, and Japanese literature has both its own set of traditional tales in that matter (generally involving deities and people not paying their respects to shrines, as well as oni getting tricked by humans) and modern stories mixing various Western and Japanese writing concepts to end with a unique literary style.
Now how is this idea expressed with Chôbe’s story arc? Well, it’s played straight from the moment he gets taken to Hôrai, but there’s a major twist on it from the start. Indeed, as soon as we’re introduced to the Aza brothers and their past, in chapter 9, we learn something important: the path they end up following always starts by being forced onto them rather than willingly followed from the start. It all starts when they get stripped from their status as samurai because of their Lord’s mistake, then their life falls even more apart when they lose their mother to illness and their father to a failed revenge that only led to his execution. As we’re explained this, we also learn that Chôbe’s thing is to adapt and keeping his pride. The way Toma explains it is interesting because we can take it as Chôbe refusing to back down, but I also think there’s more than that. Chôbe had to deal with a lot of bad events and grow up very quickly in order to protect his little brother, so what better thing to stay a master of his own fate than taking what’s forced on them and lashing out at society in reaction? In other words, the Faustian Bargain starts as something forced on Chôbe, yet he decides to make full use of it as a reaction, because it’s the best way for him to maintain a form of control over what little he has left.
This pattern is further reinforced throughout Chôbe’s trip around the island: the Waitanhua growing in the Tan pit never asked for his opinion and simply invaded him like a parasite – he later realized he could make use of it and started teaching himself during the fight against the Doshi. Same thing with Lord Tensen: Chôbe is forcibly put down and taken to Hôrai against his will, even though his initial plan was to get back to his brother. He quickly understood he’d be powerless against Rien and the other Tensen, and thus decided to get along with their plans because it’s his best chance to both stay alive and keep his brother alive – that’s where his Faustian Bargain really start, when he negociates Toma’s life against everybody else’s. It’s terrible from our point of view, because as the readers we care about all the characters, but from Chôbe’s point of view that insane bargain makes sense, and he’s fully aware of the dangerous situation he’s in. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s planning to not only trick the other Asaemon and convicts to get rid of the competition for the Elixir of Life, but Lord Tensen as well. Why? Because of the only two nasty smiles he gave us while in Hôrai (when he decided on the path to follow with Rien and when he managed to block Ju Fa’s strike with a single hand – and didn’t miss the occasion to taunt him in the process because he’s a spiteful little shit), because he really dislikes the Tensen and told the readers so, because he’s openly been thinking about killing Rien himself – but not now, he needs more strength first and is fully aware of it, power is the key to be at the top. With that in mind, I wouldn’t surprised at all to see him backstabbing the (remaining?) Tensen left and right as soon as he can. Especially since the tricked bargainer can also become the trickster in a Faustian Bargain.
However, that image of the tricked/trickster can also be related to a certain story about a certain creature in Japanese folklore, whose fate isn’t the prettiest, yet gets an interesting interpretation.
II. The imagery of Shuten-dôji and the sad fate of an Oni
First thing first, who is Shuten-dôji? Well, he’s a famous oni (a demon) in Japanese folklore. Leader of a band of oni (one of them being named: Ibaraki-dôji, Shuten-dôji’s henchman) and acting during the reign of Emperor Ichijô (r. 986-1011), he would kidnap maidens from Kyoto with his band of oni and keep them as servants in his fortress – optionally slaughtering them to drink their blood and eat their flesh. Abe no Seimei, Onmyodô of the Imperial court, divined that the demon’s fortress was on Mount Ôe, and the Emperor sent a small party to save the women and put an end to the terror of the demon king. He sent Minamoto no Raikô and Fujiwara no Hôshô to exterminate the demon and his underlings. After Raikô’s party left Kyoto, they encountered three deities of transformation, after having paid homage to their shrine, that told them to disguise themselves as yamabushi priests to trick Shuten-dôji and gain his trust. The trick worked, Shuten-dôji offered them his hospitality and shared his sake as well as his personal story with them – he would do what he was doing near Kyoto because him and his people had been displaced from their mountains after the construction of a temple nearby. Raikô then offered some sake given by the deities in order to incapacitate Shuten-dôji and take his head. And that he did, once the oni was asleep, even though the head still tried to bit him and failed only because Raikô had taken the precaution to wear to helmets beforehand. The party returned to Kyoto and Shuten-dôji head was left in the Treasure House at Byôdô-in temple.
Now, without taking the entire story at face value, I’ve noticed a lot of curious patterns that paralleled with Chôbe’s own story. First, the most obvious, the likeness to an oni. For those of you who are on the Discord server [note: r/Jigokuraku’s server], remember how I’ve been joking about Chôbe and his most fitting oni axe? Boi, what an interesting coincidence. We even get to see him drink Soshin blood (because hydration is important for survival), even drink human blood once (to Toma’s horror, which seemed to amuse him) because liquid is liquid when you’re in a tough situation, we see him drink sake with the bandits in Toma’s flashback, we know he’s the leader of a gang of bandits and was causing enough problem to get the death penalty, Toma is clearly his right hand man, Chôbe has been described as wearing a monk outfit in the bonus pages of volume 2... And we even have some interesting things from a geographical point of view.  As soon as I saw the names of the locations, I decided to google them out of curiosity. The Lord of Akô had his domain set in nowadays Hyôgo prefecture. Mount Ôe from Shuten-dôji’s story is located in Tanba province, nowadays an area that encompasses areas of both the central part of nowadays Kyoto prefecture and the east-central part of Hyôgo prefecture. Another funny thing is, Chôbe’s bandit village was set in Iyo Mountains, a group of peaks in nowadays Ehime prefecture, on Shikoku. He basically had his own fortress in the mountains, and originates from the place where it is said Shuten-dôji has been killed.
Interestingly enough, while oni have been feared, then mocked, they are now seen under another angle: one can feel sympathy towards them because they are tricked by humans, and they also make a perfect metaphor for the marginal who lives outside of a society that rejects them. And again, it fits with Chôbe’s life – though this part will be thoroughly explained in my next essay, so I’ll end this piece here so nobody will be spoiled.  But let’s just say that society and its rules haven’t been kind to Chôbe, and he clearly decided to take it and throw it back as hard as he can in reaction – I get the thought process, having grown in a rather rough neighbourhood myself it’s the sort of thing I’ve personally witnessed. It doesn’t make his actions ok, but it explains them.
While I don’t necessarily expect him to meet the same fate as Shuten-dôji, I’m also not sure he’ll survive by the end of the story. Let’s just say I’m on the fence about that, because his story arc is about to move again now that Toma is in Hôrai, and I think his survival will depend on his future decisions. From a narrative point of view, he still has a possibility to live until the end. The question is, will he take it? Will he be able to set aside all of his hang-ups to save his skin from himself? I honestly hope he will, because he needs closure for himself. And I don’t want him to die, too.

New Post has been published on https://freenews.today/2021/01/01/man-united-draw-level-at-top-with-liverpool/
Man United draw level at top with Liverpool
Tumblr media
Fernandes’ 15th goal of the season settled a high-quality New Year’s Day encounter after Bertrand Traore had canceled out Anthony Martial’s first-half opener for the home side.
Liverpool still lead United on goal difference, but after a stuttering start to the season, Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s team has been on an impressive run in the league.
A third straight home win and seven wins in the last nine has seen United charge up the league to occupy its highest position at the turn of the year since the last season of Alex Ferguson’s reign as manager in 2012-13, when the English title was last won by the Red Devils.
Solskjær was delighted with the victory but has been playing down his team’s title chances.
“It’s early in the season and we shouldn’t get too carried away with three points,” he told Sky Sports.
“We have improved and we are getting better in the league and the season is going to be tight so we just to keep working and improving as a team.”
Tumblr media
With Jack Grealish pulling the strings, Villa, so close to being relegated last season, is a team transformed in this campaign. It took a brilliant Eric Bailly block to deny substitute Keinan Davis at the death to preserve United’s lead.
Villa stays in sixth place, seven points adrift of the leaders, but with a game in hand.
Villa manager Dean Smith was unhappy with his side’s performance in the first half which saw United push the pace with Martial, Fernandes and Paul Pogba all having good efforts before Martial put the home side ahead just before halftime.
Pogba and Marcus Rashford combined in midfield to send away Aaron Wan-Bissaka whose cross was headed home at the near post by the Frenchman, his first goal from open play this season.
Tumblr media
John McGinn’s strike was the closest Villa came to scoring in the first half but the visitor was the first to strike in the second as a quick free kick found Grealish to cross for Bertrand Traore to neatly control and fire home.
The sides were level for just three minutes when Pogba wriggled his way into the box and Douglas Luiz tripped him with the lightest of touches from behind.
Referee Michael Oliver pointed to the spot but it took a further video assistant referee check for the penalty to be confirmed.
Smith said after the match he believed it was the wrong decision, but Fernandes made no mistake with the penalty past Villa keeper Emiliano Martinez, his 11th goal in the league this campaign.
Tumblr media
As the match opened up, Pogba could not convert from close range, Fernandes had a shot tipped onto the crossbar and Rashford blazed just over from the subsequent corner.
Villa also threatened and Tyrone Mings headed just wide from a Grealish free kick while Anwar El Ghazi was denied by a last-ditch stretched clearance from Wan-Bissaka.
Bailly’s heroics saw him surrounded by teammates at the end before the final whistle blew with United holding on to three precious points.
West Ham boost
Earlier, West Ham put an end to Everton’s recent fine run with a 1-0 win at Goodison Park thanks to a late goal from Tomas Soucek.
He followed up a deflected Aaron Cresswell shot to score his fifth of the season in the 86th minute, guiding his shot past Jordan Pickford.
Goalscoring opportunities at Goodison were few and far between with only one shot on target in the first half while the second half offered little more in terms of entertainment.
The best chance fell to West Ham’s Pablo Fornals, but he headed weakly wide from a good position.
Colombia’s James Rodriguez came on as a second-half substitute after an injury layoff, but was unable to spark a home revival before the Hammers made the late breakthrough.
West Ham boss David Moyes was claiming his first win against the team he formerly managed, while Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton stay in fourth, four points off the top.
“A really good, professional job,” said Moyes, praising his team for finishing a run of three games in six games so strongly.
Covid uncertainty
Meanwhile, the ongoing Covid-19 crisis could impact on Sunday’s fixtures with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola revealing that he will be without five players for the planned key clash with Chelsea.
City said on Christmas Day that there were four positive cases at the club, including Kyle Walker and Gabriel Jesus, causing Monday’s match with Everton to be postponed at short notice.
Further testing has thrown up more positive cases, including three more squad members whose identity has not been revealed.
Fulham’s match at fellow strugglers Burnley is also in doubt with the results of further testing of its squad awaited.
Its London derby on Wednesday against Tottenham Hotspur was called off at short notice, a decision labeled as “unprofessional” by Spurs boss Jose Mourinho as he prepared his side for a home game against Leeds United on Saturday.
The Premier League has faced calls for a “circuit break” with a rise in positive tests but has so far insisted the season must progress as planned.

Manson Family Leader Charles Manson Dead At 83
Charles Manson, the infamous cult leader of the “Helter Skelter” gang, has died after nearly five decades in prison, according to several media outlets. He was 83.

Charles Manson on his way to court in 1970.
Manson was reportedly taken from Corcoran State Prison in California, where he had been serving a life sentence, to a hospital in Bakersfield last week, TMZ and The Los Angeles Times reported at the time.
Manson was hospitalized for gastrointestinal issues at Bakersfield Hospital in January 2017.
The man who would become synonymous with pure evil was in his mid-30s in 1969, when he was charged with orchestrating a series of gruesome murders. He was the leader of the so-called Manson Family, a quasi-commune. He told followers an apocalyptic race war was coming.
He described the collapse of society as “helter skelter,” a term he borrowed from a Beatles song and was found scrawled in blood ― though misspelled ― on a refrigerator at one of the crime scenes.
Manson was trying to precipitate a race war when he ordered his followers to kill seven people, including Sharon Tate, a pregnant actress married to famed director Roman Polanski.
Manson and three of his devout followers ― Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten ― went on trial in June 1970. A fifth suspect, Linda Kasabian, was given immunity in exchange for her testimony against the others.

The nearly 10-month trial cost Los Angeles $1 million, a record that stood until serial killer Richard Ramirez’s murder trial nearly 20 years later.
The courtroom antics of Manson and his followers captured front-page headlines. At one point, Manson carved an X into his forehead, which years later he turned into a swastika. Some of his followers held vigils outside the courthouse.
The outbursts turned volatile in August 1970, when an infuriated Manson, denied permission to question a witness, leaped over the defense table to attack the judge. Manson was wrestled to the ground before he made it to the bench, but the attack reportedly prompted the judge to begin wearing a revolver under his robes.
On Jan. 25, 1971, the jury convicted the four defendants on multiple counts of first-degree murder.
During the penalty phase, Manson shaved his head and trimmed his beard in the likeness of a fork, according to the book The True Story of the Manson Murders.
“I am the devil, and the devil always has a bald head,” Manson told reporters covering the trial.

In March 1971, the jury sentenced each of the four defendants to death. Manson reportedly shouted to jurors: “You people have no authority over me.”
Three months later, Manson follower Charles “Tex” Watson went to trial. He was found guilty of seven counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to death.
The defendants’ sentences were commuted to life in prison in 1972, when the U.S. Supreme Court temporarily banned the death penalty.
Manson was denied parole a dozen times during his decades of incarceration. He didn’t attend his most recent hearing, in April 2012.

Even in prison, Manson didn’t fade from the media spotlight. In the 1980s, he gave several interviews, including a notorious session with Geraldo Rivera on NBC in 1988. During the interview, Rivera hit a raw nerve when he suggested Manson was not brazen enough to do his own bidding.
“Where I come fro, the guys with guts, they do it themselves,” Rivera said.
Manson, apparently irritated by the comment, replied, “Come on, man, why you feel the need to get down on me? Is that going to make you look any bigger? What if I just jumped on you and beat the dog shit out of you. Would that make you feel any bigger?”

The public’s fascination with the notorious killer endured, with Manson’s likeness plastered on T-shirts and featured in comic books. His story was told countless times in books and true-crime TV shows. He was featured in movies and documentaries, including two made-for-television dramatizations of his crimes. Songs written by Manson have been sung by several hard-rock bands. Singer Brian Hugh Warner, who goes by the stage moniker Marilyn Manson, reportedly created his name by combining Manson’s last name with the first name of actress Marilyn Monroe.
Sandi Gibbons, a former reporter who covered the Manson trial for City News Service, discussed Manson’s cultural influences with The Associated Press in 1999.
“Charlie was always a con man,” Gibbons said. “And now he’s managed to con a whole new generation of people.”
Manson captured headlines around the world again in November 2014, when Afton Elaine “Star” Burton, then 26, announced she was engaged to the aging killer. Burton obtained a marriage license, but it expired and she did not obtain another prior to Manson’s death.

A crowd of reporters surround Los Angeles prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi as he leaves the courtroom in the trial of Charles Manson.
Tate’s sister, Debra Tate, told The Associated Press in January 2017 that, as a Catholic, she had “no ill wishes” for her sister’s killers.
“I would probably say a prayer for them and shed a tear and ask God to have mercy on their souls,” she said at the time.
She told ABC News after Manson died that she did not feel relieved to hear the news.
“People are saying that this should be some kind of relief, but oddly enough it really isn’t,” Debra Tate said. “While Charlie may be gone, it’s the ones that are still alive that perpetrate everything and it was up to their imaginations for what brutal things were going to be done. In an odd way I see them as much more dangerous individuals.”
Manson’s prosecutor, Vincent Bugliosi, author of the 1974 book Helter Skelter, died at age 80 in 2015. Bugliosi made his feelings clear in a 2009 interview with Time, when asked if he was sorry Manson was not executed.
“I don’t use the word sorry, but he should have been executed, and I told the jury, if this was not a proper case for the imposition of the death penalty, then no case ever would be,” Bugliosi said. “Manson did not deserve to live.”
Michele Hanisee, president of the Association of Deputy District Attorneys, issued a statement Sunday saying that Bugliosi “provided the most accurate summation: ‘Manson was an evil, sophisticated con man with twisted and warped moral values.’”
This article has been updated with comment from Hanisee, as well as additional comment from Debra Tate.

The Daily 202: Eight reasons to be skeptical that Trump is serious about his new call for ‘strong background checks’
By James Hohmann | Published August 05 at 10:39 AM ET | Washington Post | Posted August 5, 2019 9:13 PM ET |
THE BIG IDEA: We’ve seen this movie before. Will the remake end differently?
President Trump tweeted this morning that Republicans and Democrats should come together to pass “strong background checks, perhaps marrying this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform,” so that those killed over the weekend in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, will not have died in vain.
In a speech at the White House, Trump called for “red flag” laws, or extreme risk protection orders, to ensure people who “pose a grave risk to public safety” do not have access to guns — or so that their guns can be taken with “rapid due process.” He also directed the Justice Department to flesh out a proposal to ensure that those who commit hate crimes and mass murders face the death penalty — and for capital punishment to be delivered “without needless delay.”
Then Trump opened the door to bigger action. “I am open and ready to discuss all ideas that will actually work,” he said.
Here are eight reasons to take this with a grain of salt. As always, watch what the president does more than what he says:
1. Trump talked a big game about the need to change gun laws after the February 2018 massacre in Parkland, Fla., but he never followed through with anything significant. He held a televised White House meeting with leaders from both parties during which, among other things, he expressed openness to raising the age to buy a gun from 18 to 21. But then he caved to pressure from the National Rifle Association and did an abrupt about-face. Instead, he created a Federal Commission on School Safety. A week before Christmas, the panel led by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos quietly released a report that advised against increasing the minimum age required for gun purchases. The Trump administration did, however, move to ban bump stocks through the regulatory process after the Las Vegas massacre in October 2017. That ban went into effect this March.
2. The devil is in the details. Trump’s tweet today is generic and vague. He’s not endorsing any of the many proposals that have been floating around for years.
3. Trump has previously threatened to veto two background check bills that passed the House in February. Congressional Republicans overwhelmingly opposed both measures. “The first bill, receiving 240 votes — with just eight Republicans voting ‘yes’ — would extend existing laws to require background checks for all gun sales and most gun transfers,” Felicia Sonmez and Paul Kane note. “The second bill, which passed with support from three Republicans, aims to close the ‘Charleston loophole,’ a reference to the 2015 shooting in South Carolina. The gunman was able to purchase the weapons after a three-day federal background check failed to turn up a prior conviction, and this proposal would extend that window for completing a background check to at least 10 business days. Trump has threatened to veto both measures.”
4. Both bills are being pigeonholed by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R), who is up for reelection in Kentucky next year and therefore has little incentive to upset his right flank. McConnell, who fractured his shoulder yesterday in a fall outside his Louisville home, is very unlikely to bow to calls for a special session to take the bills up.
5. Injecting immigration into the already fraught gun debate is a poison pill. Congress has been unable to act on guns or immigration because both are issues full of political land mines. The fact that Trump suggests they should be grouped — when both issues divide both parties — suggests strongly that this is more about messaging than a desire to put points on the board.
6. Time is on the gun lobby’s side. Congress’s summer recess is scheduled to last five more weeks. Five weeks is an eternity in politics, and the passage of time may sap momentum as the public’s attention turns elsewhere.
7. The NRA is weakened by scandal, but the gun lobby is still strong. The NRA played a pivotal role in getting Trump elected in 2016 by spending heavily in the states he flipped and activating conservatives in places such as Pennsylvania. But the group’s strength has always been the passion of its adherents. The Republican Party has grown more dependent on rural voters in recent years, who tend to be more opposed to gun control.
8. Trump’s divisiveness makes it harder for him to bring the country together, even if he’s earnest about wanting to do so. Just 38 minutes after calling for national unity this morning, Trump suggested that the media is to blame for the shootings. “Fake News has contributed greatly to the anger and rage that has built up over many years,” he tweeted. “News coverage has got to start being fair, balanced and unbiased, or these terrible problems will only get worse!”
The president’s criticism of the media follows a string of articles that highlight the ways he’s fanned the flames of anti-immigrant sentiment. “After yet another mass slaying, the question surrounding the president is no longer whether he will respond as other presidents once did, but whether his words contributed to the carnage,” White House bureau chief Phil Rucker writes on the front page of today’s newspaper.
The manifesto apparently written by the suspected shooter in El Paso closely mirrors Trump’s rhetoric, including language about a Hispanic “invasion” of Texas. “The author’s ideology is so aligned with the president’s that he decided to conclude the manifesto by clarifying that his views predate Trump’s 2016 campaign and arguing that blaming him would amount to ‘fake news,’ another Trump phrase,” Rucker notes.
Mick Mulvaney, the acting White House chief of staff, pointed to that part of the manifesto. “People are going to hear what they want to hear,” he said on NBC. “My guess is this guy’s in that parking lot out in El Paso, Texas, in that Walmart doing this even if Hillary Clinton is president.”
-- Why this time could be different: Trump has the power to get something done if he wants. This could be his Nixon-to-China moment. During the brief period last year when Trump was calling for strict gun laws, polls showed Republican support for gun control surging. He’s popular enough with Republicans that he could strong-arm enough senators to pass a bill if he wanted to invest the political capital. Going into an election year, Trump may decide that passing a law strengthening background checks would boost his standing with suburban women and other constituencies he’s struggling with. Unlike last year, there’s a Democratic-controlled House.
Like Trump, there are Republicans in Congress who are up for reelection next year and might benefit from passing some bill on this issue. “I have long supported closing loopholes in background checks to prevent the sale of firearms to criminals and individuals with serious mental illness,” said Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), whose approval rating has been tanking since she voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, referring to the bipartisan measure by Sens. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) that failed to get 60 votes after the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook in Newtown, Conn.
MORE FROM TEXAS:
-- The 21-year-old man accused of slaying 20 people in an El Paso shopping center will be treated as a domestic terrorist, authorities said Sunday, adding that they are seriously considering charging him with federal hate crimes. Annie Gowen, Mark Berman, Tim Craig and Hannah Natanson report: “The suspect, Patrick Crusius, from suburban Dallas, is probably the author of a rambling, hate-filled manifesto posted on the 8chan website shortly before Saturday morning’s shooting, authorities believe, but they are still investigating. … In jail, Crusius has been cooperating with investigators and answering questions, officials said, though they declined to detail what he said. ‘He was forthcoming with information,’ said El Paso Police Chief Greg Allen. ‘He basically didn’t hold anything back.’ ”
John Bash, the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Texas, said the possible charges — including hate crimes and firearms charges — could carry a death sentence.
El Paso County District Attorney Jaime Esparza said the state has filed capital murder charges against Crusius. “We will seek the death penalty,” Esparza said Sunday.
The FBI is looking at a number of possible charges, said Emmerson Buie Jr., the special agent in charge of the bureau’s El Paso division.
-- “Crusius was raised in Allen, Tex., a predominantly white and affluent suburb north of Dallas. His childhood had challenges: His parents divorced in 2011, and his father chronicled a four-decade drug addiction in a self-published memoir. … As a student in Plano High School in 2017, he participated actively in calculus and law enforcement class. … After graduation, Crusius enrolled in Collin College, which he attended from fall 2017 to spring of 2019 … Crusius would often appear zoned-out during class, according to a classmate … During chemistry lab, the classmate said, the classmate noticed that Crusius frequently muttered to himself. After his parents divorced and sold the house in 2018, Allen police said, Crusius would frequently stay at different locations throughout the Dallas region, including with his grandparents, his mother and his father.”
-- Survivors said the shooter was calm and expressionless as he murdered people in a Walmart parking lot and then inside the store. Eli Rosenberg, Heather Long, Griff Witte and Alex Hinojosa report: “It was the second-to-last weekend before the start of school, and 1,000 customers had crammed into the Walmart Supercenter on Gateway Boulevard, where pens, notebooks and crayons were all on sale. Children filled the aisles, trying on new backpacks and clothes. The shoppers had come from both sides of the border that separates this Texas city from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. …
“For Robert Jurado, it began as a regular Saturday. He had taken his car to get washed, then ridden with his 87-year-old mother to the nearby Walmart for groceries. They were coming out of the store around 10:30 a.m. when they heard a loud bang. … There was a shooter in the parking lot, firing on anyone he encountered. As he walked, he fired — with no expression on his face. ‘He was, like, all calm,’ Jurado said. ‘He didn’t show no remorse.’ … Police say the first call about the shooter reached them at 10:39 a.m., and they arrived by 10:45 a.m., meaning the gunman was on the move for at least 15 minutes. …
“After his rampage through the parking lot, the gunman entered the Walmart — with CCTV footage capturing his arrival. … Most of Saturday’s victims were hit inside the Walmart, with a smaller number struck in the parking lot. The shooter kept firing after leaving the store, but then he abruptly stopped and drove away. Police officials said Sunday that they don’t know why. … Crusius was apprehended a short distance from the Walmart at 11:06 a.m.”
-- Mexican officials angrily denounced the shooting and raised the possibility of charging the perpetrator in Mexican courts. Mary Beth Sheridan reports from Mexico City: “President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said seven Mexicans were among the 20 killed in the attack Saturday in the border city, and seven more were wounded. Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said the country would take action under international law. ‘Mexico is indignant,’ he told journalists. ‘But we are not proposing to meet hate with hate. We will act with reason and within the law, but with firmness.’ The remarks represented a toughening of Mexico’s official reaction to the shootings. On Saturday, López Obrador appeared to play down the U.S. government’s responsibility for the violence, saying the attack was ‘a product of [societal] decomposition, of problems certain people have. It’s not a generalized issue.’ … López Obrador said Mexico didn’t want to get mixed up in the U.S. presidential campaign.”
-- Mexican authorities released a list identifying five of the Mexican nationals who were slain in El Paso. Among them were Sara Esther Regalado, of Ciudad Juarez, and Adolfo Cerros Hernández, of Aguascalientes: The couple lived in Ciudad Juarez and had been shopping at the Walmart when the shooting began, according to El Sol del Centro. Elsa Mendoza, of Yemopera, was a special ed teacher in Ciudad Juarez who was visiting family in El Paso with her husband and son at the time of the shooting, according to Zacatecas en Imagen. Maria Eugenia Legarreta Rothe, of Chihuahua, was in town to pick up her teenage daughter from the airport. She stopped at the Walmart while she waited for the flight to land, per Milenio.
-- U.S. authorities have not released an official list of victims. Among those identified:
Jordan and Andre Anchondo, of El Paso, had just marked their first wedding anniversary and their oldest daughter was turning 6, Andre’s older brother Tito said. They were preparing to show off their new house and were planning on throwing a big party on Saturday. They didn’t make it. The Anchondos and their infant son were at Walmart shopping for school supplies when the gunman opened fire, killing both parents and sending their baby to the hospital. The baby survived but had several broken bones. Jordan was a stay-at-home mother of three: the 6-year-old and 1-year-old daughters from earlier relationships and her and Andre’s 2-month-old. Leta Jamrowski, Jordan’s sister, said that, based on the baby’s injuries, it appeared that Jordan died while trying to shield the baby from the gunshots. (Rebecca Tan)
Arturo Benavides, of El Paso, was running errands with his wife, Patricia. They were almost out of the Walmart when the shooting began. Patricia was pushed into a bathroom stall and was able to get away unhurt but Arturo, who lived for his family, his dog and upside-down pineapple cake, didn’t make it. The couple had been married for more than 30 years. Jacklin Luna, his great-niece, said Arturo, a former bus driver and an Army veteran, was “always the first person to offer anything he had.” (Hannah Natanson)
Angelina Englisbee was on the phone with one of her sons just before the shooting began, and she told him she had to hang up because she was at the Walmart checkout line. That was the last her family heard from her, said her granddaughter, Mike Peake. Englisbee had seven children and a son who died in infancy, Peake said. She loved watching sports and “General Hospital.” “She was a very strong person, very blunt,” Peake said. (New York Times)
-- Jorge Sainz, a Mexican American pediatrician, described treating El Paso’s victims to the New Yorker: “This was getting close to military trauma. This guy wasn’t shooting a .22 or a little rifle. I was seeing scooped-out flesh. It kept coming. And coming.”
THE LATEST FROM OHIO:
-- The Dayton gunman killed his sister and eight others. Kevin Williams, Hannah Knowles, Hannah Natanson and Peter Whoriskey report: “In the hours before the mass shooting, siblings Connor and Megan Betts drove the family’s 2007 Corolla to visit this city’s historic Oregon District, an area alive on a summer night with restaurants, bars and nightlife. Then, police said, they separated. It is not clear what Megan, 22, did at this point. But Connor, 24, donned a mask, body armor and ear protection. Wielding an AR-15-like assault weapon with magazines containing 100 rounds, he set out on a street rampage that, although it lasted only about 30 seconds, killed nine people and injured 27 others, police said. Among the first to die was Megan Betts. Her male companion was injured, but survived.
“Less than a minute into the barrage, police patrolling the area saw people fleeing and neutralized Connor Betts — he was shot to death — as he was about to enter a bar where dozens of people had run in to hide. … Authorities said that in Dayton, four women and five men were killed. Of the 27 people who were injured, 15 had been discharged from a hospital as of Sunday afternoon. … The guns had been legally purchased, police said. …
“Midway through Betts’s freshman year at Bellbrook High School, the school became aware that he was toting around a ‘hit list,’ including classmates, of people he wanted to take ‘revenge’ on, said Samantha Thomas, 25, who attended Bellbrook at the same time Betts did. … ‘He got kicked out of school for it.’ David Partridge, 26, who also attended Bellbrook with Betts, said the list included a member of his family.”
-- Here’s more information on the victims, as collected by Post reporters:
Megan K. Betts, 22, spent the past couple of months as a tour guide helping visitors explore Montana at the Missoula Smokejumper Visitor Center. Her former supervisor, Daniel Cottrell, said she was a “very positive person” and was well-liked by her peers.
Monica E. Brickhouse, 39, who lived in Virginia, was probably visiting family in her old hometown, said her childhood friend, Farren Wilmer. She was a mother of one and ran her own business. “She was always funny and smart and beautiful,” Wilmer said. “You know how kids always say, ‘I’m going to do this’ or ‘I’m going to do that?' Monica grew up and actually did what she said she was going to do. That’s the sort of person she was.”
Nicholas P. Cumer, 25, was a graduate of the cancer care program at Saint Francis University in Pennsylvania and was working in Dayton as an intern for the Maple Tree Cancer Alliance, a treatment center, the organization said on Facebook. On the night of the shooting, he had been celebrating the end of the summer with friends. “He was intelligent, he was extremely caring and kind. He loved his patients, and he always went above and beyond for them,” said Tyler Erwin, one of his co-workers who was at the scene of the shooting. Cumer was one week away from completing his internship.
Derrick R. Fudge, 57, was out with relatives when the shooting began, his sister, Twyla Southall, said. “He was a good man and loved his family,” she said.
Thomas J. McNichols, 25, was a father of four whom an aunt described as a “gentle giant.” “Everybody loved him. He was like a big kid,” the aunt, Donna Johnson, told WHIO-TV. His four children are all between the ages of 2 and 8.
Lois L. Oglesby, 27, was the mother of two, her uncle Joe Oglesby said. The nurse’s aide had just had her second baby last month.
HATE IS CONTAGIOUS:
-- This weekend reflected how American violence — quickly and effortlessly — goes viral. Marc Fisher reports: “Whether the proximate cause was political or personal, whether it grew out of ideological indoctrination, mental illness or some toxic blend of factors that left shooters isolated and damaged, each attack demonstrated a troubling disorder festering in modern America. … ‘These are not single shooters,’ said Daniel Okrent, author of ‘The Guarded Gate,’ a history of anti-immigrant bigotry in the United States. ‘They’re a mob with high-powered rifles, people who feel they’re part of something bigger. The technology has changed: A mob doesn’t have to get together in the street with torches anymore.’ …
“Whatever label is attached to any mass shootings committed by anti-immigrant extremists, they should be viewed not as individual acts but as part of a contagion, said J.M. Berger, a researcher on terrorism and propaganda and author of ‘Extremism.’ ‘Social media allows a lot of people with similar ideological ideas to synchronize their actions,’ Berger said. … The notion that a ‘great replacement’ of whites by some other group is being encouraged by powerful forces is often credited to a French writer, Renaud Camus, who wrote a 2012 book called ‘The Great Replacement.’ … On Sunday, Camus denied responsibility for the El Paso shooting, but endorsed the ideas Crusius may have touted in the manifesto. ‘It is obviously not ‘The Great Replacement,’ the book, which causes the mass massacres,’ Camus wrote on Twitter. ‘It is the great replacement itself.’”
-- “There are no lone wolves,” writes Juliette Kayyem, a former assistant secretary at the Department of Homeland Security: “White-supremacist terror is rooted in a pack, a community. And its violent strand today is being fed by three distinct, but complementary, creeds. The community has essentially found a mission, kinship and acceptance.”
-- The FBI insists it is fully engaged in combating the threat of violence from white supremacists, but some veteran counterterrorism experts say the bureau has been doing far too little despite internal concerns that have been building up for more than a decade. Devlin Barrett reports: “Dave Gomez, a former FBI supervisor who oversaw terrorism cases, said he thinks FBI officials are wary of pursuing white nationalists aggressively because of the fierce political debates surrounding the issue. ‘I believe Christopher A. Wray is an honorable man, but I think in many ways the FBI is hamstrung in trying to investigate the white supremacist movement like the old FBI would,’ Gomez said. ‘There’s some reluctance among agents to bring forth an investigation that targets what the president perceives as his base. It’s a no-win situation for the FBI agent or supervisor. … I don’t think there’s any faith by the FBI right now that the Justice Department is an independent law enforcement organization,’ he said. ‘I think the FBI is up to the challenge of investigating white nationalism and white supremacy as a domestic terrorism threat, they just have to be allowed to do it.’”
-- Three of this year’s mass shootings began with a hateful screed on the anonymous message board 8chan, one of the Internet’s most venomous refuges for extremist hate. Drew Harwell reports: “Like after the shootings in Christchurch and the Chabad of Poway synagogue, the El Paso attack was celebrated on 8chan as well: One of the most active threads early Sunday urged people to create memes and original content, or OC, that could make it easier to distribute and ‘celebrate the [gunman’s] heroic action.’ … The message boards tied to mass violence have fueled worries over how to combat a Web-fueled wave of racist bloodshed.
“The El Paso shooting also prompted the site’s founder to urge its owners to ‘do the world a favor and shut it off.’ ‘Once again, a terrorist used 8chan to spread his message as he knew people would save it and spread it,’ Fredrick Brennan, who founded 8chan in 2013 but stopped working with the site’s owners in December, told The Washington Post. ‘The board is a receptive audience for domestic terrorists.’ …
“The site has for years been shielded by U.S. laws that limit websites’ legal liability for what their users post and has been further protected by an Internet infrastructure that makes it difficult to take sites down. Some online researchers also fear that a shutdown of 8chan would only spur hate groups to organize elsewhere. … The site is registered as a property of the Nevada-based company N.T. Technology and owned by Jim Watkins, an American Web entrepreneur living in the Philippines. Asked for comment, Watkins replied with a single sentence: ‘I hope you are well.’”
-- Cloudflare, the Internet infrastructure company that houses 8chan, announced it will stop hosting the website after this weekend. Matthew Prince, Cloudflare’s CEO, explains why in a blog post: “Even if 8chan may not have violated the letter of the law in refusing to moderate their hate-filled community, they have created an environment that revels in violating its spirit. We do not take this decision lightly. Cloudflare is a network provider. In pursuit of our goal of helping build a better internet, we’ve considered it important to provide our security services broadly to make sure as many users as possible are secure, and thereby making cyberattacks less attractive — regardless of the content of those websites. … We reluctantly tolerate content that we find reprehensible, but we draw the line at platforms that have demonstrated they directly inspire tragic events and are lawless by design. 8chan has crossed that line.”
-- Bystanders shared videos of El Paso’s violent aftermath, and strangers online begged them to stop. Abby Ohlheiser reports: “One video posted Saturday, with more than 250,000 views on Facebook, appears to begin outside [the El Paso Walmart]. … A man, whose Facebook name matches that of a witness to the shooting quoted by media outlets, walks inside the store while filming on his phone. He approaches a body, face down in the entrance, in a pool of blood. Another bystander is already there, phone also pointed toward the body. The two nearly collide, both watching their phones. … More than 4,000 people have shared this video, which was streamed live and now carries a graphic content warning from Facebook. But others, in the video’s comments, pushed back. ‘Stop filming,’ one Facebook user wrote as the live video was broadcast.”
DIVIDED AMERICA:
-- Walmart has a complicated history with guns. Derek Hawkins and Morgan Krakow report: “In addition to being the world’s largest retailer, Walmart is often referred to as the world’s largest gun retailer. … But Walmart’s relationship with firearm sales has been fickle in the 26 years since it made the landmark decision to stop carrying handguns. As economic and political winds have shifted, so have Walmart’s gun policies, though the general trend has been toward more restrictions. … Last year, Walmart said it would raise the minimum age to buy a firearm or ammunition from 18 to 21 and remove products resembling assault-style rifles, such as airsoft guns and toys, from its inventory … In 2006, Walmart announced that it would stop selling firearms entirely at all but a third of its U.S. stores, which then numbered around 3,000. … Just two years later, Walmart made it harder to buy firearms at the stores that were still selling them. …
“But when the economic recession took hold in 2009, Walmart’s sales slumped. And after a five-year hiatus at most of its locations, the company started filling up shelves with shotguns, rifles and ammunition. … In 2012, after the mass shooting in Newtown, Conn., Walmart resisted calls to stop selling assault-style rifles such as the Bushmaster AR-15 … Three years and numerous mass shootings later, however, Walmart did stop selling the AR-15 and similar weapons. … Walmart CEO Doug McMillon, who has headed the company since 2014, has stressed that he wants to cater to hunting and sports shooting, the things [founder Sam] Walton enjoyed.”
-- This is what perpetual war looks like in America, writes our art and architecture critic Philip Kennicott: “When we saw images of the war dead from Iraq or Afghanistan, they were surrounded by an architecture that seemed odd, often low-rise buildings made of dun-colored concrete. When a bomb blast tore a hole in the facade of a distant city, we stared into the gaping vacuity at disorderly domestic spaces that were strange and unrecognizable, full of clothes, appliances and shattered dishware that wasn’t like the stuff you find at Walmart. Now the war has come to Walmart. And Hooters. And Sam’s Club and McDonald’s, and an unnamed but homey looking restaurant that has a $7.99 Lunch Special. If this doesn’t look like war, that’s only because we so reflexively resist the idea of a war on American soil that we refuse to see the obvious.”
-- The Navy’s football team in Annapolis apologized and changed its initial motto for the 2019 season: “Load the clip.” Cindy Boren reports: The phrase “was deemed inappropriate and insensitive in a community still recovering from a fatal shooting last year in the Capital Gazette newsroom, only a few miles from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. … ‘We sincerely apologize if it upset anyone, but it was not meant to be taken the way it may have been by some,’ said Coach Ken Niumatalolo. ‘We understand that it probably wasn’t appropriate considering the current climate and certain things that are happening in our society.’”
-- It wasn’t just Texas and Ohio: Gun deaths were reported all over the country this weekend. From ABC News:
In Chicago, at least three people were killed and 37 more injured this weekend in shootings within city limits, including 22 people shot Sunday in less than four hours, according to the Chicago-Sun Times.
In Shreveport, La., a 1-month-old girl was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting.
In Charles County, Md., officers responded to a call that a 42-year-old man shot and killed his in-laws. The suspect, police said, then shot at an 11-year-old boy who was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The man, Mark Hughes, was later found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the sheriff’s office.
In Pinellas County, Fla., deputies shot and killed a 35-year-old man after police said he pointed a 12-guage shotgun at them. The man, the sheriff’s office said, was a suspect in the fatal shooting of his mother.

Pamela Anderson lashes out at UK after Assanges arrest in London
Pamela Anderson has attacked the UK after her rumoured lover Julian Assange was arrested at the Ecuadorian embassy in London.
Anderson hit out in a series of fiery tweets posted after the Wikileaks founder was filmed being carried out of the embassy by police while shouting incoherently.
The actress wrote: ‘I am in shock.. I couldn’t hear clearly what he said? He looks very bad. How could you Equador? [sic] (Because he exposed you).
Pamela Anderson hit out at the UK, Ecuador and USA in a series of tweets after her rumoured lover Julian Assange was arrested in London
The actress has made no secret of her visits to Assange while he was inside the embassy (pictured entering in 2016), saying they shared ‘a closeness’
Anderson (pictured at the embassy in 2017, left, and 2016, right) once claimed she had a ‘romantic’ connection to Assange, but later denied that they had been lovers
‘How could you UK? Of course – you are America’s b***h and you need a diversion from your idiotic Brexit bulls***.’
‘And the USA ? This toxic coward of a President. He needs to rally his base? – You are selfish and cruel. You have taken the entire world backwards.
‘You are devils and liars and thieves. And you will ROTT [sic] And WE WILL RISE.’
Assange’s arrest comes the day after blackmailers threatened to release video footage taken inside the embassy which was said to contain ‘sensitive, possibly sexual material’.
During his seven years in the embassy, Assange has been visited by a number of high profile guests – most notably Anderson.
The Baywatch star made no attempt to hide her ‘very close’ relationship with Assange last year, even once claiming they had a ‘romantic’ connection.
In August, Anderson told Fox News that she and Assange ‘have this closeness’.
‘He’s not close to people like he is to me,’ she said. ‘There’s definitely a romantic kind of connection because it’s a romantic struggle.’
Anderson also tweeted this image of the Wikileaks founder along with a Latin phrase which means ‘the truth will prevail’
Anderson, who lives in France with her soccer player boyfriend Adil Rami, said she first decided to meet with Assange to learn how to become a ‘more effective’ activist.
She then began visiting him frequently, always bringing the WikiLeaks founder vegan food and sharing conversations on everything from the Bible to animal rights and jealousy.
In November, Anderson claimed that she and Assange didn’t have a romantic relationship but said she felt ‘very close to him’.
‘I feel closer to him than a lot of people have and he trusts me,’ she added. ‘Yes, it’s a friendship.’
When asked if she would consider dating Assange once he can leave the embassy, she joked that he was ‘a little pale for me’.
Assange was arrested by British police after Ecuador dramatically withdrew his political asylum seven years after he was given refuge in the country’s London embassy.
The Wikileaks founder, sporting a scruffy beard and unkempt hair, was dragged out of the building head-first in handcuffs by a group of seven men as stunned supporters watched on as he screamed out ‘the UK must resist’.

Julian Assange (pictured bottom left) as he is arrested by police after being ejected from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (pictured in May 2017) came under intense scrutiny after the website began releasing hundreds of thousands of classified US diplomatic cables
Assange, who has overseen the publication of thousands of classified military and diplomatic cables through WikiLeaks, is currently in custody and is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court ‘as soon as possible’.
Ecuador’s president Lenin Moreno said the decision to withdraw Assange’s asylum status came after the ‘repeated violations to international conventions and daily-life protocols’ and his ‘discourteous and aggressive behaviour’.
Moments after the arrest, during which Assange held on to a Gore Vidal book on the history of the national security state, WikiLeaks said Ecuador had acted illegally and ‘in violation of international law’.
Assange, 47, has not left Ecuador’s diplomatic soil since 2012, when the country offered diplomatic protection from allegations of sexual assault in Sweden.
While the case was eventually dropped, Assange has always feared extradition to the US, where his lawyers have claimed he could face the death penalty for the leaking of highly-classified documents.
In a statement today, Ecuador’s president added that he had asked Britain to guarantee that Assange would not be extradited to any country where he could face torture or the death penalty.

A Houston court has found a Jordanian immigrant guilty of the ‘honor killing’ of his daughter’s husband and masterminding the murder of her friend in 2012. Ali Mahwood-Awad Irsan now faces life imprisonment or the death penalty. Furious that his daughter Nesreen had chosen to convert from Islam to Christianity and marry an American man, Coty Beavers, Irsan set out looking for retribution. He stalked Nesreen and Beavers, forcing daughter to obtain a restraining order against father. Irsan’s wife, Shmou Alrawabdeh, testified that her ultra-conservative husband believed that he had to kill Beavers to restore his honor. In January 2012, Isran –together with his son Nasim– tracked down and shot dead his daughter’s best friend Gelareh Bagherzadeh. An Iranian medical student and activist, Bagherzadeh had reportedly encouraged the marriage. That November, the pair snuck into the apartment where Irsan’s newly married daughter lived with Beavers and shot the 28-year-old man seven times. Prosecutors claim that the two slayings were part of a wider plot to kill five people, including Nesreen herself. Testifying earlier in the week, Irsan denied any involvement in the killings, and called prosecutors “devils” as he was led out of the courtroom. “Honor and shame, that’s what this is all about,” prosecutor Anna Emmons told the jury. “You heard him say honor is a big deal to him. And the only way to clean that honor is to kill.” Irsan is a father of 12 and was described in the trial as a “radical extremist Muslim” and a controlling father. In court on Thursday he carried a placard with the Islamic mantra “There is no god but Allah, and Mohammed is Allah’s messenger,” a statement of faith found on the flags of Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan and on the flag of terrorist organization Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS). While Irsan’s case lasted five weeks, it took the jury just 35 minutes on Thursday to find him guilty of capital murder. Irsan’s sentencing hearing was due to begin on Friday, and he could potentially be put to death under Texas law. Irsan’s son Nasim, 24, is currently awaiting trial for his alleged role in the killings. ‘Honor killings’ are prevalent in the Islamic world and are often carried out by fathers who feel that their wayward daughters have brought shame on the family, by refusing an arranged marriage, dating outside the family religion or losing their virginity outside of marriage. In Pakistan, more that 1,000 women are murdered every year in honor killings. In Irsan’s native Jordan, between 15 and 20 women die in honor killings every year, according to Human RIghts Watch. WORLD CUP
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) Lionel Messi and Argentina finally came alive at the World Cup.
Messi scored an exquisite 14th-minute goal to give the two-time champions the lead Tuesday, but it wasn’t until Marcos Rojo’s 86th-minute strike that Argentina was assured of a place in the round of 16.
Article continues below …
Victor Moses scored a penalty in the 51st minute for Nigeria, putting Argentina in danger of being eliminated without winning a match in Russia.
It took an unlikely goal by Rojo to save Argentina and give it second place in Group D.
Digeo Maradona, in the stands at the St. Petersburg Stadium, celebrated both goals wildly.
Argentina will play France in the last 16 in Kazan on Saturday.
PRO FOOTBALL
FAIR LAWN, N.J. (AP) – A body has been found at a New Jersey home where New York Giants cornerback Janoris Jenkins lives.
The Bergen County prosecutor’s office says it is investigating a death at the house in Fair Lawn, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) north of MetLife Stadium. Property records show Jenkins has lived at the house the last two years.
Authorities have identified the dead man as 25-year-old Roosevelt Rene, a family friend of Jenkins. The prosecutor’s office didn’t say where Jenkins was when the death occurred.
A spokesman for the Giants says the team is monitoring the situation but didn’t comment further.
Jenkins played at Florida from 2008-10 before finishing his college career at North Alabama. He was drafted in the second round by the St. Louis Rams in 2012. He played four seasons with the Rams and the last two seasons with the Giants.
BASEBALL
NEW YORK (AP) – New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson is taking a leave of absence because his cancer has returned, and he does not expect to return to the job.
With the team in a massive tailspin, Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon and the 70-year-old Alderson made the announcement before a game against Pittsburgh.
”With respect to the future, I would say two things: One is, notwithstanding the good prognosis, my health is an uncertainty going forward,” said Alderson, who agreed to a contract extension in December. ”And secondly, if I were to look at it on the merits, I’m not sure coming back is warranted.”
Asked whether he would like Alderson to resume his GM duties if his health eventually allowed that, Wilpon avoided expressing an opinion and answered the same way twice: ”I think his health and his family are first and foremost.”
Assistant general manager John Ricco and special assistants J.P. Ricciardi and Omar Minaya will run the team’s baseball operations in Alderson’s absence. Minaya preceded Alderson as Mets general manager, and Ricciardi was GM of the Toronto Blue Jays from 2001-09.
ATLANTA (AP) – The body of a third-party contractor has been found inside a beer cooler at SunTrust Park.
The body was found by a worker from the same company. Cobb County police spokeswoman Sarah O’Hara tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution she could not say if foul play is suspected because the investigation is ongoing.
Cobb County police say in a statement that officers responded to a ”call of a deceased person located at SunTrust Park” before the Atlanta Braves’ game against the Cincinnati Reds.
The Braves declined comment, referring reporters to the statement from Cobb County police.
O’Hara tells the newspaper the identity of the person would not be released until the family is notified. She says the Braves are assisting in the investigation.
BOXING
LAS VEGAS (AP) – Boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s father has been acquitted in Las Vegas of a misdemeanor battery charge after a trial before a judge.
Floyd Mayweather Sr.’s lawyer, Nicholas Wooldridge, said testimony took several hours before Justice of the Peace Harmony Letizia reached the not guilty verdict on Tuesday.
Wooldridge called allegations that the 65-year-old Mayweather Sr. pulled a woman from his vehicle, punched her in the leg and left her after a boxing event last September in an attempt to get money from his client.
Prosecutors didn’t immediately respond to messages.
Police had said the woman was treated at a hospital for bruises she said she received from Mayweather Sr. after arguing with him while he drove her and her husband home after a Sept. 16 boxing match at T-Mobile Arena.
HOCKEY
The Hockey Hall of Fame has added NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, pioneering black player Willie O’Ree and all-time winningest goaltender Martin Brodeur to its latest class.
Since taking the job in 1993, Bettman has overseen the growth of the league to 31 teams and an enterprise with some $5 billion in revenue.
O’Ree was the first black player in the NHL and will be the third black player in the Hall of Fame, joining Edmonton Oilers goalie Grant Fuhr and Canadian women’s national team captain Angela James. Playing for Boston, he had four goals and 10 assists in 45 NHL games during the 1957-58 and 1960-61 seasons despite being 95 percent blind in his right eye.
Now 82, O’Ree works for the NHL as diversity ambassador.
The 46-year-old Brodeur was a three-time Stanley Cup champion with the New Jersey Devils who was elected in his first year of eligibility. He is the goalie with the most wins, shutouts and games played in NHL history.

Is Reformed theology ‘orthodox’?
All of the earliest church fathers (prior to Augustine) taught that all mankind had the natural ability to seek God and have faith - that they did not need to be ‘regenerated’ or changed in any way prior to being able to do this.
Ignatius 35-107 AD Bishop of Antioch in Syria. Ignatius was a disciple of the Apostle John and appointed as Bishop of Antioch by the Apostle Peter. He taught:
“I do not mean to say that there are two different human natures, but all humanity is made the same, sometimes belonging to God and sometimes to the devil. If anyone is truly spiritual they are a person of God; but if they are irreligious and not spiritual then they are a person of the devil, made such not by nature, but by their own choice. Pg.61 vol. 1.
There is set before us life upon our observance [of God’s precepts], but death as the result of disobedience, and every one, according to the choice he makes, shall go to his own place, let us flee from death, and make choice of life.”
Clement, 80-140 AD
The first Apostolic Father of the Church.  According to Tertullian, Clement was consecrated by Saint Peter. Early church lists place him as the second or third bishop of Rome after Saint Peter. In Philippians 4:3 Clement is mentioned whose name was written “in the book of life”. Although known as 2 Clement, this document is in actuality an anonymous homily of the mid-second century. He taught:
“But inasmuch as inborn affection towards God the creator is sufficient for salvation to those who love Him, the enemy tries to pervert this affection in men, and to render them hostile and ungrateful to their Creator…But if mankind would turn their affection towards God, all would doubtless be saved, even if when they have some faults they would be open to correction for righteousness, but now most of mankind have been made enemies of God, their hearts the wicked one has entered, and has turned aside towards himself the affection which God the Creator had implanted in them, which He, God, desires that they might have towards Him. Pg.101 Vol.8
It is therefore in the power of every one, since man has been made possessed of free-will, whether he shall hear us to life, or the demons to destruction.
He who is good by his own choice is really good; but he who is made good by another under necessity is not really good, because he is not what he is by his own choice…
For no other reason does God punish the sinner either in the present or in the future world, except because He knows that the sinner was able to conquer but neglected to gain the victory.”
Justin Martyr 110-165 AD
“For He fore-knows that some are to be saved by repentance, some even that are perhaps not yet born. In the beginning He made the human race with the power of thought and of choosing the truth and doing right, so that all men are without excuse before God; for they have been born rational and contemplative Chapter 28
Let some suppose, from what has been said by us, that we say that whatever occurs happens by a fatal necessity, because it is foretold as known beforehand, this too we explain. We have learned from the prophets, and we hold it to be true, that punishments, chastisements, and good rewards, are rendered according to THE MERIT OF EACH MAN’S ACTIONS. Now, if this is not so, but all things happen by fate, then neither is anything at all in our own power. For if it is predetermined that this man will be good, and this other man will be evil, neither is the first one meritorious nor the latter man to be blamed. And again, unless the human race has the power of avoiding evil and CHOOSING GOOD BY FREE CHOICE, they are not accountable for their actions.  (c. 160, E), 1:177”
Tatian the Syrian 110-172 AD taught:
“Our free will has destroyed us. We who were free have become slaves. We have been sold through sin. Nothing evil has been created by God. We ourselves have manifested wickedness. But we, who have manifested it, are able to reject it again.” (c. 160, Vol. 2, pp. 69-70)
Each of these two orders of creatures [men and angels] was made free to act as it pleased. They did not have the nature of good, which again is with God alone. However, it is brought to perfection in men through their freedom of choice. In this manner, the bad man can be justly punished, having become depraved through his own fault. Likewise, the just man can be deservedly praised for his virtuous deeds, since in the exercise of his free choice, he refrained from transgressing the will of God. (c. 160, Vol. 2, p. 67)”
Irenaeus of Lyons 120-202 AD
The Apostle John had a disciple named Polycarp, and Polycarp had a disciple named Irenaeus. He taught:
“But man, being endowed with reason, and in this respect similar to God HAVING BEEN MADE FREE IN HIS WILL, and with power over himself, is himself his own cause that sometimes he becomes wheat, and sometimes chaff. (c. 180, E/W), 1:466
Clement of Alexandria (Titus Flavius Clemens) 150–215 AD. A theologian who taught at theCatechetical School of Alexandria. Among his pupils were Origen and Alexander of Jerusalem. He taught:
“We…have believed and are saved by voluntary choice (c. 195, Vol. 2, p. 217)
To obey or not is in our own power, provided we do not have the excuse of ignorance (c. 195, Vol. 2, p. 353)
Believing and obeying are in our own power. (c. 195, Vol. 2, p. 527)
Nor will he who is saved be saved against his will, for he is not inanimate. But above all, he will speed to salvation voluntarily and of free choice. (c. 195, Vol. 2, p. 534)
Choice depends on the man as being free. But the gift depended on God as the Lord. And He gives to those who are willing, are exceedingly earnest, and who ask. In this manner, their salvation can become their own. For God does not compel. (c. 195, Vol. 2, p. 593)”
Tertullian (Quintus Septimius Florens Tertullianus) 160-225 AD. He taught:
“I find, then, that man was constituted free by God. He was master of his own will and power…For a law would not be imposed upon one who did not have it in his power to render that obedience which is due to law. Nor again, would the penalty of death be threatened against sin, if a contempt of the law were impossible to man in the liberty of his will…Man is free, with a will either for obedience of resistance. (c. 207, Vol. 3, pp. 300-301)
Methodius 260-312 AD Bishop of Olympus. He taught:
“God is good and wise. He does what is best. Therefore, there is no fixed destiny.” (c. 190, Vol. 6, p.343)
Now those [pagans] who decide that man is not possessed of free will, and affirm that he is governed by the unavoidable necessities of fate…are guilty of impiety toward God Himself, making Him out to be the cause or author of human evils. (c. 190, The Banquet of the Ten Virgins 16; God’s Strategy In Human History, p. 252)”

DEVIL’S BARGAIN Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, and the Storming of the Presidency By Joshua Green 272 pp. Penguin Press. $27.
Mellivora capensis — better known as the honey badger — is a thick-skinned and sharp-toothed little creature that in 2011 became a YouTube sensation thanks to a short video called “The Crazy Nastyass Honey Badger.” In the clip, a honey badger chases off jackals, raids a beehive, survives a cobra bite and eats venomous snakes head first. Meanwhile, an unseen narrator extols the animal’s core virtue: “Honey badger don’t give a . . .” — well, a darn.
The video has been viewed more than 83 million times.
Most people who watch it probably find it fairly amusing — and plenty gross. But for Stephen Bannon, Donald Trump’s chief strategist and leading impresario of the alt-right, the video and its furry hero were something else: inspiration. The animal is the mascot of Breitbart News, the truth-optional publication Bannon took over following Andrew Breitbart’s sudden death in 2012 and with which he can maintain communication thanks to a White House waiver. After Trump made allegations about Bill Clinton’s sexual history in a debate last year with Hillary Clinton, Bannon exulted over his boss’s brazen but effective performance: “Classic honey badger,” he called it.
If there’s a lesson to draw from “Devil’s Bargain,” Joshua Green’s deeply reported and compulsively readable account of Bannon’s fateful political partnership with Trump, it is not to underestimate the honey badger. “If I didn’t come along, the Republican Party had zero chance of winning the presidency,” Trump told Green, a senior national correspondent for Bloomberg Businessweek, in May 2016, and he was probably right. Only someone with his and Bannon’s transgressive instincts, along with their seeming incapacity for moral and intellectual embarrassment, could have defeated the well-oiled if soulless machine that was Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign.
Green reminds us that it wasn’t long ago that both men were looked at as political jokes, and not even bad ones. When Ivanka Trump told Rupert Murdoch over lunch that her father intended to run for president, the media baron replied, without even looking up from his soup: “He’s not running for president.”
As for Bannon, when Green first met him in 2011 he came across as a “political grifter seeking to profit from the latest trend.” Later, as Bannon took the reins of the Trump campaign, he was seen by Beltway Republicans as “an Internet-era update of the Slim Pickens character in ‘Dr. Strangelove’ who rides the bomb like a rodeo bull, whoopin’ and hollerin’ all the way to nuclear annihilation.”
But whatever the pair lacked in conventional political experience, they made up for with other gifts. Both understood showmanship: slogans, narrative, put-downs and especially conflict. They knew the value of rage and outrage alike — the first as fuel for a movement; the second as the indispensable foil for that movement.
They also grasped that much that was supposed to matter in politics no longer did — detailed policy papers, for instance, or personal decorum. Trump, Green writes, “figured out that the norms forbidding such behavior were not inviolable rules that carried a harsh penalty but rather sentiments of a nobler, bygone era, gossamer-thin and needlessly adhered to by politicians who lacked his willingness to defy them.”
That’s why Trump’s birtherism — the support he gave to the lie that Barack Obama was born abroad — never disqualified his candidacy, even as it helped him “forge a powerful connection with party activists.” It’s a tactic he would repeat straight through the end of the campaign, when he took to denouncing “international banks” in terms that shaded into anti-Semitism.
“Darkness is good,” was Bannon’s advice for dealing with criticism from groups such as the Anti-Defamation League. “Don’t let up.” At another moment, when the campaign feared House Speaker Paul Ryan would try to steal the G.O.P. nomination from Trump, Bannon threatened to rally Breitbart’s army. “Pepe’s gonna stomp their ass,” he said — “Pepe the Frog” being the alt-right’s white-supremacist cartoon mascot on Twitter.
Green is consistently interesting on the subject of Trump. But the real value of “Devil’s Bargain” is the story it tells about Bannon, some of which has been previously reported (not least by Green himself) but never so well synthesized or explained as it is here. The product of a working-class family and a Catholic military high school in Richmond, Va., he was taught from an early age that the defining moment in Western civilization occurred in 1492 — not with Columbus’s discovery of the New World, mind, but with Ferdinand and Isabella’s Reconquista from the Moors of the Iberian Peninsula.
“The lesson was, here’s where Muslims could have taken over the world,” recalled one of Bannon’s classmates. “And here was the great stand where they were stopped.”
If that was an early hint of Bannon’s political vision (and now a staple of Trump’s foreign policy speeches), other lessons suggested the means he would employ to achieve that vision. On Wall Street in the mid-1980s, he came to admire Michael Milken, the so-called junk bond king, who showed how a “band of outsiders” could set about “laying siege to a comfortable, fattened and vulnerable establishment.”
Later, while running an Internet business in Hong Kong, Bannon discovered the underworld of online gamers; “intense young men” who “disappeared for days or even weeks at a time in alternate realities.” One of those alternate realities was “World of Warcraft,” in which millions of people were digitally transformed into secret soldiers waging titanic battles in unseen worlds against mythical enemies.
Bannon seemed to intuit that this digital world could be recreated for his political purposes, by designing an apocalyptic narrative of righteous warriors waging an end-of-days battle by all necessary means against assorted enemies: jihadists, progressives, Acela-corridor Republicans, the Clintons. Republican political operatives had spent the Obama years wondering about the “missing” white voters who had failed to show up for John McCain and Mitt Romney. Turns out, they (or others like them) were online, and Bannon — whose own fantasies were suggested by a portrait he had of himself in his office, dressed as Napoleon — was proposing to supply this army with the necessary ammunition.
Much of it would come from the bile factory at Breitbart News. Another part would be supplied by the Government Accountability Institute, a Tallahassee, Fla.-based nonprofit that mined the “deep Web” and dug up the dirt on the Clinton Foundation for Peter Schweizer’s 2015 blockbuster “Clinton Cash.” There was also a data-analytics firm, Cambridge Analytica, an offshoot of a British company “that advised foreign governments and militaries on influencing elections and public opinion using the tools of psychological warfare.”
What all of this added up to was a kind of alt-G.O.P. — agile and indifferent to norms and boundaries — that could supply the Trump campaign with everything it needed to win. Bannon has described himself as a “Leninist” for wanting to “destroy the state.” Whether he will achieve that is doubtful, but he seems to share Lenin’s genius for building a secret party with radical designs, ready to pounce at the historically opportune time.
Now it has succeeded. To what end? As an electoral gambit, the honey badger approach was a good bet: Trump is president not in spite of the wretched things he said about Mexicans, women, John McCain, Megyn Kelly and so on, but because he said them. He sold his shamelessness as fearlessness and his charlatanism as charisma, and people believed. Lord save us when Democrats alight on a similar candidate.
As a governing principle, however, honeybadgerism has been less of a success. As an article in Mental Floss noted, honey badgers may be smart, resilient and incredibly tough, but they’re also “lazy about housekeeping,” “mean” and “skunk-like,” meaning they possess an anal gland that releases a suffocating smell when in distress.
Readers can draw their own parallels, but that’s usually not a formula for political success. Bannon and his acolytes should beware: Sooner or later, they’ll outstay their welcome.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange is arrested by police
Julian Assange was arrested by British police today after being hauled out of the Ecuadorian embassy in London following an extradition request by the US.
The Wikileaks founder, sporting a scruffy beard and unkempt hair, was dragged out of the building head-first in handcuffs by a group of seven men as his stunned supporters watched on as he screamed out ‘the UK must resist’.
Shortly after, British authorities confirmed that the whistleblower was being held on behalf of the US, as well as for breaching bail conditions following rape allegations in Sweden dating back to 2010.
WikiLeaks confirmed Assange had been arrested under a US extradition warrant for conspiracy with American whistleblower Chelsea Manning for publishing classified information revealing war crimes, also in 2010.
It comes after Ecuadorian president Lenin Moreno dramatically withdrew Assange’s asylum status after seven years, blaming his ‘discourteous and aggressive behaviour’ in continuing to work with WikiLeaks while housed at the embassy.
Assange has always feared extradition to the US, where his lawyers have claimed he could face the death penalty for the mass leaking of highly-classified documents through WikiLeaks.
It was accidentally revealed in November that Assange had been secretly indicted by the US Justice Department, but the exact nature of the charges against the 47-year-old was not disclosed.
In a statement issued this morning, Ecuador accused Assange of violating the terms of his asylum by ‘interfering in internal affairs of other states’ as well as ‘blocking security cameras’ and ‘confronting and mistreating guards’.
The arrest came just 24 hours after Wikileaks accused Ecuador of an ‘extensive spying operation’, adding that it assumed intel had been handed over to the administration of US President Donald Trump.
Assange, who has overseen the publication of thousands of classified military and diplomatic cables through WikiLeaks, is currently in custody and is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court today.
News of his arrest was praised by Home Secretary Sajid Javid, who said ‘no one was above the law’, while Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt added Assange was ‘no hero’ and claimed he had ‘hidden from the truth for years’.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange (pictured in May 2017) came under intense scrutiny after the website began releasing hundreds of thousands of classified US diplomatic cables
In a statement, the Home Office said: ‘We can confirm that Julian Assange was arrested in relation to a provisional extradition request from the United States of America.
‘He is accused in the United States of America computer related offences.’
Assange has not left Ecuador’s diplomatic soil since 2012, when the country offered diplomatic protection from allegations of sexual assault in Sweden.
The case was eventually dropped as investigators were unable to formally notify Assange of the allegations, however Swedish prosecutors revealed today that the case could now be revisited following his arrest.
Moments after the arrest, during which Assange held on to a Gore Vidal book on the history of the national security state, WikiLeaks said Ecuador had acted illegally and ‘in violation of international law’.
In a statement today, Ecuador’s president claimed to have asked Britain to guarantee that Assange would not be extradited to any country where he could face torture or the death penalty.
Mr Javid said: ‘Nearly seven years after entering the Ecuadorean Embassy, I can confirm Julian Assange is now in police custody and rightly facing justice in the UK.
‘I would like to thank Ecuador for its cooperation & for its professionalism. No one is above the law.’
Shortly after his arrest, vocal supporter and former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson tweeted a black and white photo of Assange along with the caption ‘Veritas Valebit’, which is Latin for ‘the truth will prevail’.
The 51-year-old, who claims she was previously in a relationship with Assange, said she was in shock at the arrest.
Taking to Twitter she commented on his appearance and said he looked ‘very bad’.
She said: ‘How could you Equador ? (Because he exposed you). How could you UK? Of course – you are America’s b***h and you need a diversion from your idiotic Brexit b*******. ‘
She also called out the USA and described President Donald Trump as ‘toxic’.
She added: ‘This toxic coward of a President He needs to rally his base? – You are selfish and cruel. You have taken the entire world backwards.

Ecuador president slams ‘discourteous and aggressive behaviour’ of Julian Assange as he reveals UK was asked to guarantee he wouldn’t be extradited to a country with the death penalty
Lenin Moreno, President of Ecuador, said in a statement on Julian Assange that he had displayed ‘discourteous and aggressive behaviour’.
He said: ‘Ecuador sovereignly has decided to terminate the diplomatic asylum granted to Mr Assange in 2012. For six years and 10 months, the Ecuadorian people have protected the human rights of Mr Assange and have provided for his everyday needs at the facilities of our Embassy in London.
Ecuador’s President Lenin Moreno speaks in a televised address about Julian Assange
‘Ecuador has fulfilled its obligations in the framework of international law. On the other hand, Mr Assange violated, repeatedly, clear cut provisions of the conventions on diplomatic asylum of Havana and Caracas; despite the fact that he was requested on several occasions to respect and abide by these rules.
‘He particularly violated the norm of not intervening in the internal affairs of other states. The most recent incident occurred in January 2019, when WikiLeaks leaked Vatican documents. Key members of that organisation visited Mr Assange before and after such illegal acts.
‘This and other publications have confirmed the world’s suspicion that Mr Assange is still linked to WikiLeaks and therefore involved in interfering in internal affairs of other states.
‘The patience of Ecuador has reached its limit on the behaviour of Mr Assange. He installed electronic and distortion equipment not allowed. He blocked the security cameras of the Ecuadorian Mission in London.
‘He has confronted and mistreated guards. He had accessed the security files of our Embassy without permission. He claimed to be isolated and rejected the internet connection offered by the Embassy, and yet he had a mobile phone with which he communicated with the outside world.’
‘You are devils and liars and thieves. And you will ROTT And WE WILL RISE .’
Meanwhile, US whistleblower Edward Snowden warned the arrest was a ‘dark moment for press freedom’.
Snowden tweeted: ‘Images of Ecuador’s ambassador inviting the UK’s secret police into the embassy to drag a publisher of-like it or not-award-winning journalism out of the building are going to end up in the history books.
‘Assange’s critics may cheer, but this is a dark moment for press freedom.’
Snowden is currently living in exile Russia having fled the US after leaking a huge cache of declassified documents back in 2013.
The Former CIA agent has been a longstanding supporter of Assange’s cause having allegedly been helped by the WikiLeaks founder in handing over the secret documents to journalists.
Assange’s arrest comes a day after Wikileaks accused the Ecuadorean Government of an ‘extensive spying operation’.
In a press conference on Wednesday, it was alleged that the WikiLeaks founder’s meetings with lawyers and a doctor inside the Ecuador embassy in London over the past year had been secretly filmed.
The anti-secrecy organisation said it had been offered all the material from an unnamed person in Spain, if it paid €3million (£2.6million).
WikiLeaks also told how it assumed the information had been handed over to the administration of US President Donald Trump.
Assange had refused to leave the embassy, claiming he would be extradited to the United States for questioning over the activities of WikiLeaks if he did so.
Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said following the arrest: ‘What we have shown today is that nobody is above the law – Julian Assange is no hero.
‘He’s hidden from the truth for years and years and it’s right that his future should be decided in the British judicial system.’
He added: ‘What has happened today is the result of years of careful diplomacy by the Foreign Office.’
Mr Hunt added: ‘[It’s] a very courageous decision by President Moreno in Ecuador to resolve this situation that’s been going on for nearly seven years.
‘It’s not so much that Julian Assange was being held hostage in the Ecuadorian Embassy, it was actually Julian Assange holding the Ecuadorian Embassy hostage. It was a situation that was absolutely intolerable to them.’
In a statement this morning, Scotland Yard said: ‘Julian Assange, 47, has today, Thursday 11 April, been arrested by officers from the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) at the Embassy of Ecuador, Hans Crescent, SW1 on a warrant issued by Westminster Magistrates’ Court on 29 June 2012, for failing to surrender to the court.
‘He has been taken into custody at a central London police station where he will remain, before being presented before Westminster Magistrates’ Court as soon as is possible.
‘The MPS had a duty to execute the warrant, on behalf of Westminster Magistrates’ Court, and was invited into the embassy by the Ambassador, following the Ecuadorian government’s withdrawal of asylum.’
WikiLeaks tweeted: ‘URGENT: Ecuador has illigally (sic) terminated Assange political asylum in violation of international law.
‘He was arrested by the British police inside the Ecuadorian embassy minutes ago.’
Shortly after his arrest, vocal supporter and former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson tweeted a black and white photo of Assange along with the caption ‘Veritas Valebit’, which is Latin for ‘the truth will prevail’

Pamela Anderson tweets support for arrested Assange
American-Canadian actress Pamela Anderson has hit out at the UK after Julian Assange’s arrest at the Ecuadorian embassy in London.
The 51-year-old, who was previously in a relationship with Assange said she was in shock at the arrest.
Taking to Twitter she commented on his appearance and said he looked ‘very bad’.
She said:  ‘How could you Equador ? (Because he exposed you). How could you UK? Of course – you are America’s bitch and you need a diversion from your idiotic Brexit b*******. ‘
She also called out the USA and described President Donald Trump as ‘toxic’.
She added:  ‘This toxic coward of a President He needs to rally his base? – You are selfish and cruel. You have taken the entire world backwards.
‘You are devils and liars and thieves. And you will ROTT And WE WILL RISE .’
Ms Anderson then re-tweeted videos of Assange’s arrest before posting a photo of him with the caption ‘veritas valebit’, which is Latin for ‘truth will prevail’.
Lenin Moreno, President of Ecuador, said in a statement on Assange: ‘Ecuador is a generous country and a nation with open arms.
‘Ours is a government respectful of the principles of international law, and of the institution of the right of asylum.
‘Granting or withdrawing asylum is a sovereign right of the Ecuadorian state, according to international law.
‘Today, I announce that the discourteous and aggressive behaviour of Mr Julian Assange, the hostile and threatening declaration of its allied organisation, against Ecuador, and especially the transgression of international treaties, have led the situation to a point where the asylum of Mr Assange is unsustainable and no longer viable.
‘Ecuador sovereignly has decided to terminate the diplomatic asylum granted to Mr Assange in 2012.
‘For six years and 10 months, the Ecuadorian people have protected the human rights of Mr Assange and have provided for his everyday needs at the facilities of our Embassy in London.
‘When I became the President of Ecuador, I inherited this situation and decided to adopt a protocol to set the daily life rules at the Embassy, which is less than anyone may expect from a guest hosted at his own house.
‘Ecuador has fulfilled its obligations in the framework of international law.
‘On the other hand, Mr Assange violated, repeatedly, clear cut provisions of the conventions on diplomatic asylum of Havana and Caracas; despite the fact that he was requested on several occasions to respect and abide by these rules.’
Rafael Correa, who was Ecuadorian president when Assange was granted asylum, has strongly condemned his successor’s decision.
He tweeted that Lenin Moreno was the ‘greatest traitor in Ecuadorian and Latin American history’.

Lawyer for Julian Assange’s alleged Swedish rape victim says ‘we will do all we can to make prosecutors reopen investigation’
The Swedish lawyer of Julian Assange’s alleged rape victim is pushing to reopen the case that was dropped in 2017.
Lawyer Elisabeth Massi Fritz says she would ‘do all we can to make prosecutors reopen investigation’ in the wake of the Wikileaks founder’s arrest today.
She said: ‘My client and I have just received the news that Assange has been arrested.
‘The fact that what we have been waiting and hoping for for nearly seven years is now happening, of course, comes as a shock to my client.
‘We will do all we can to get prosecutors to reopen the Swedish preliminary criminal investigation so that Assange can be extradited to Sweden and be prosecuted for rape.’

Julian Assange’s arrest branded a ‘dark moment for press freedom’
US whistleblower Edward Snowden has warned the arrest of Julian Assange is a ‘dark moment for press freedom’.
Soon after Assange’s arrest in London today, Snowden tweeted: ‘Images of Ecuador’s ambassador inviting the UK’s secret police into the embassy to drag a publisher of-like it or not-award-winning journalism out of the building are going to end up in the history books.
Edward Snowden (pictured) said critics would cheer at the arrest
‘Assange’s critics may cheer, but this is a dark moment for press freedom.’
Snowden is currently living in exile Russia having fled the US after leaking a huge cache of declassified documents back in 2013.
The Former CIA agent has been a longstanding supporter of Assange’s cause having allegedly been helped by the WikiLeaks founder in handing over the secret documents to journalists.
The 47-year-old has not left Ecuador’s diplomatic soil since 2012, when the country offered diplomatic protection from allegations of sexual assault in Sweden.
While the case was eventually dropped, Assange has always feared extradition to the US where his lawyers have claimed he could face the death penalty for the leaking of highly-classified documents.
An international warrant for arrest was issued on November 18 2010 for Assange on suspicion of rape, sexual molestation and unlawful coercion – which he denies.
He has since lived inside the embassy in Knightsbridge for seven years when Swedish authorities requested his extradition as a suspect in the rape case.
