carol's relationship with star sapphire is so thematically enriching in context of the discordance between power and agency in green lantern comics. the power that she (and hal!) possesses is a) contingent upon her ability to fulfill a given role in the hierarchical establishment and b) thrust upon her without her consent!!!! her role at ferris air is a condition of her father's approval, while star sapphire exists as a violation of her personal autonomy—which is why it's so fascinating to unpack her motives when she does choose to pursue its power. carol's worst offenses are consistently a reaction to the destabilization of her environment: predator manifested in response to carl's belittlement and jason bloch's attack; star sapphire only targeted green lantern after the zamarons abandoned her. it's the revelation of her true lack of agency that drives her to lash out. power is illusory as long as someone else controls it—this was carol ferris' mantra long before it ever became parallax's

As someone who is a barry allen stan, you are personally oppressing me by claiming that he is a Republican because superheroes are good people and conservatives are all evil!!! Are you implying that barry allen is not a good person
i think barry allen is the worst person ever i hate how he's a nuanced character with politics that don't match with mine and i hate how those politics enforce the decisions he makes as the flash which in turn separates his relationship to the cowl from that of his successor and what's more those beliefs coupled with his own character flaws ended up leading him to one of the worst moments in his life (i.e; the death of eobard thawne) and how that def didn't make him a better more complicated character than before....also he microwaved a baby once what a freak.

Not the “hate” anon, but if you don’t like Wally, which of the Flashes do you like? I like them all, but I have a soft spot for Avery and Ace despite how stupid some of the comics they’re in are.
hi anon there's been a misunderstanding here because im a wally superfan and he's my favorite dc character of all time lol. but i also rly like barry and and max, with a soft spot for bart, jesse, and jay in that order. i haven't really seen much of either avery or ace since i stopped reading modern flash comics about two years ago but i liked ace when he was around. i would have rly loved an in depth look into any potential tension ace and wally would've had with each other but the dynamic of "you're my universal doppleganger and i feel rly weird about how my loved ones interact with you in comparison to me" got dropped way too quickly.......

from a practical standpoint i think the main difference between green arrow and his oft compared foil batman is that the former's moral code is so dependant on his own emotional reactions. ollie can and will bend the ethical standard for his idea of "justice" (i.e; capital punishment is fine if he's the one doing it) and so his own principles are flexible to an ill-defined perception of virtue. in comparison, batman follows a set of social mores (i.e; his famous "no killing" rule) that are maintained without exception. his condemnation over what is and isn't acceptable stems from whether that action is direct or indirect, and so his rationale to who is culpable for a crime is inflexible no matter their intentions. the common area here is that both of these philosophies are rooted in their own lived experiences and that respective trauma informs how their moral code can be compromised.

lrb is also why i wish there was more of an impact of hal's death on wally in terms of moral code because the thing wally consistently took away from his admiration of hal was his sense of duty and responsibility in the face of being vested with immense power but at least as waid wrote him wally was also skeptical of external authority that interfered with what one might call the "truth" or "sincerity" of his heroism and if anything hal's death should have been something to exacerbate this viewpoint. in this essay i will

it's very significant to me hal jordan's origin stands in contrast to the stereotypical superhero—one who independently pursues vigilantism—in that he did not become a green lantern his own volition, but was rather propelled into the role and limply adopted it as sacred doctrine. he navigates his entire heroic career while extremely susceptible to some ambiguous authority's tenet of morality. which is not to say he lacks principles or methodology,, but it's ollie's (yet another external influence whom hal holds in high regard) prompting that leads him to question the institution he's upholding for the first time. even hal's definitive tragic backstory exacerbates his desire to prostrate himself in the face of authority rather than yielding a moral code of his own (i.e. batman's no killing rule)!! the innate qualities for which he was selected were the very traits that primes him for indoctrination; he was dutiful and doomed from the start
