The Davenports delivers a totally escapist, swoon-worthy romance while offering a glimpse into a period of African American history often overlooked. The Davenports are one of the few Black families of immense wealth and status in a changing United States, their fortune made through the entrepreneurship of William Davenport, a formerly enslaved man who founded the Davenport Carriage Company years ago. Now it's 1910, and the Davenports live surrounded by servants, crystal chandeliers, and endless parties, finding their way and finding love—even where they’re not supposed to. There is Olivia, the beautiful elder Davenport daughter, ready to do her duty by getting married . . . until she meets the charismatic civil rights leader Washington DeWight and sparks fly. The younger daughter, Helen, is more interested in fixing cars than falling in love—unless it’s with her sister’s suitor. Amy-Rose, the childhood friend turned maid to the Davenport sisters, dreams of opening her own business—and marrying the one man she could never be with, Olivia and Helen’s brother, John. But Olivia’s best friend, Ruby, also has her sights set on John Davenport, though she can’t seem to keep his interest . . . until family pressure has her scheming to win his heart, just as someone else wins hers. Inspired by the real-life story of the Patterson family, The Davenports is the tale of four determined and passionate young Black women discovering the courage to steer their own path in life—and love.

I'm reading The Davenport, aka this book with the gorgeous cover:
Tumblr media
I hate how Tumblr makes images so small now wtf
And I have issues with this book. Under the cut because I'm going to rant.
The book's premise is really cool: it's 1910s Chicago, where all things consider Black people have a possibility of being very successful, and we're told a story through the eyes of four girls as they fall in love, start a business of their own, fight against the social limitations imposed on them solely because they're women, learn about the civil rights movement, etc. I was excited for this book, but now that I'm halfway through it, I find it supremely underwhelming.
The Davenports is chiefly a romance book but romance is its worse aspect by far --and it's not like the author dives deep in those 'other aspects'.
Four love stories are told at the same time, which means that none of them are developed appropriately. They all seem too rushed and the men these girls are with... They're boring with the exception of DeWight (beautiful name btw) and they're almost caricature-like.
John, for example, is such a stupid character. And if he isn't stupid, then he's definitely an asshole. He's talking about loving Amy-Rose, all the while being jealous about Ruby flirting with another man. He's supposed to have had an intense romance with Ruby but he hardly ever talks to her and ghosted her big time after having gone to college. You would think the Amy-Rose/John/Ruby/Harrison love square (?) could be interesting but nope! The book is too busy half-assing the other girls' stories to delve into it!
Harrison is just there for Ruby to use, and while it's obvious that she'll eventually fall for him, he practically lacks a personality beyond being Ruby's lapdog. Oh, wait! He also comes from an interracial family wherein his mother used to be enslaved to his father --but it's all fine since they actually love each other, he isn't a product of SA or anything :)
Lawrence is nice, I suppose. But he's just there. He's British and he's a perfect match for Olivia and buddies-soon-to-be-lovers with Helen and bla bla bla. Again, there's no insight on his character at all, so he's a huge missed opportunity.
Washington DeWight I like. He has a Personality™ and Aspirations™ and motivations and I don't know, he just seems cool. He challenges Olivia and is a window to learning more about Black history. It's a shame that his character is lost amid the need to talk about ~10 characters at once.
I wouldn't say I could've written the book better than the author, because for once I don't know the first thing about Black history in America (I don't even live in the same continent the US is in). But structure-wise, I do think the book is in urgent need of a do-over: give me more books, center them around 1/2 of the girls and slowly ease the rest of the girls' stories into the narrative, then develope them in upcoming books --and ffs either focus more on the men or give them POVs so that they seem more fleshed out.
This was horrible and after writing this I've realised I have to DNF

LR characters and what types of sick they are:
Bree - the gross sick, snot everywhere, blotchy face, looks like she is on her death bed.
Leo - he could be dying and still look fine. Bree is so jealous, Tasha is alarmed everytime he even sneezes, because what if it's worse than it looks?
Adam - "wait, I'm sick?" He doesn't realize he's ill until somebody tells him and even then he tries to just go about his day like everything is fine.
Chase - "I am dying!" except not in the drama queen way, he genuinely believes he is going to die and whenever someone tells him he's just exaggerating he starts describing how exactly is the sickness going to kill him and he is so convincing and obviously knows what he is talking about that everybody ends up believing him.
Donald - "I am dying!" but in the drama queen way. Once when he caught the flue he called the whole family and told them he is going to die soon so they should fight for their inhertance. Tasha was not amused.
Douglas - the whiney sick. "I'm sooo hungry, somebody please feed me soup", Donald makes the kids take care of him, because he had to when they were kids and he hated it.
Tasha - the sleepy sick. She sleeps the whole time, the only thing that can wake her up is if the kids get into any trouble.

The reunion had begun with plenty of celebration and contentment.
Helena beamed, able to finally share to her family, extended and all, that Ulrich and herself had been handfasted, bound by love, respect and the community of the people they lived amongst.
Her latest pregnancy while only just been acknowledged had her belly protruding, but she was not alone in this welcomed fate.
At the arrival of the Princess Alexandria, and learning of her pregnancy, most celebrations came, for new and wanted life was sacred to Hillside.
The night transgressed to the surprise arrival of not just Abelie, but of Nathaniel Davenport.
And the news of love.
With Ulrich, it had come to blows, with Nathaniel's jaw being the recipient, when the revelation had been made to hastily.
Abelie remained unmoved. Her time away from Hillside had steeled her, once locked at sea, once remaining in the custody of people proclaiming good deeds, and traveling far and wide to find herself on the islands of Rovan, Abelie was determined to show her love for Nathaniel was true.
Hillside and the Stony Hills & Oxbow Lakes, would not remain silent while family wandered about, and life continued on.
It was all one could hope for. Helena believed that more than anything.

How "The Davenports" Creates Delicious Conflict While Daring Women to Dream Big
Content Warning: The Davenports describes racial injustice, sexism and brief instances of racialized violence. Also, lots of infidelity (because courting is basically society-speak for dating). Reader discretion is advised. Spoilers for The Davenports ahead! “He doesn’t want us to be special. He wants us, Black people with wealth, education, and opportunities, to be common. The Davenports
By Krystal Marquis
Tumblr media
Rating: 2/5⭐️
Historical fiction is a genre that I have recently been obsessed over so naturally I was excited at the premise of The Davenports. A bit of a heads-up, though this book is categorized as historical fiction with some romance, I'd argue it's more the other way around. It's a lot heavier on the romance, so keep that in mind to see whether or not this may be the book for you.
Quick Plot Summary:
Now, I've always wondered what it would be like to have a black fmc as a lead in a book set in the Gilded Age. In this book's case, make that 4 with the inclusion of a biracial narrator.
The book follows these 4 young women as they navigate the many challenges of life, questioning their positions in their current lives and the foreseeable future. Ofcourse, sprinkle in some romance within each young lady's life and things get a little complicated.
Thoughts:
Unfortunately when it comes to the plot this book did little beyond present me with the same character narrative/problems over and over again. I was tempted to give this book 1.5 stars but the drama was entertaining at times, enough to keep me engaged for most of the book, pushing it to 2 stars.
To put it simply there was nothing that stood out about the book other than the fact that it was an all black cast of characters in 1900s Chicago. Yes they're upper class society and at this point it's giving Bridgerton but not much else from there. That was it really, the characters lacked personality and about halfway through I only really cared for one girl's story out of the 4, whose perspectives alternated throughout the book.
The pacing was decent, but even this couldn't keep me from skimming through the pages towards the ending.
Overall, I'm disappointed because I had high hopes for this book.

[Review] The Davenports
Tumblr media
Author: Krystal Marquis
In 1910, the Davenports are one of the few Black families of immense wealth and status in a changing United States, their fortune made through the entrepreneurship of William Davenport, a formerly enslaved man who founded the Davenport Carriage Company years ago. Now the Davenports live surrounded by servants, crystal chandeliers, and endless parties, finding their way and finding love—even where they're not supposed to.
Spoilers ahead!
For me, this book started off well but then at a certain point it kind of started to teeter off and became very much like a soap opera. Also, in this novel the romance is primary and the historical elements are secondary.
What I Liked:
The multiple points of view of the different ladies that we follow throughout the story. Here are my favorites in order from most to least: Olivia, Amy-Rose, Ruby, and then Helen.
I liked the setting of the novel which is the early 20th century in Chicago.
I liked a majority of the romantic pairs and I think that the characters complement each other well.
I enjoyed the dilemma of pursuing what you personally want to do versus what society expects of you.
What I Disliked:
I think the novel is a little bit too long and definitely should have been shorter.
No matter what I could not get behind Jacob's and Helen's romance it was icky to me. I think it was underdeveloped and too much of a coincidence. Not to mention he was courting Olivia and the novel already had another Davenport sibling John who was in a love triangle situation. I just think the author could have done something much more interesting narratively when it came to Helen's love interest.
Recommend: Overall, if you're looking for a historical romance book that prioritizes romance over the historical aspects then I think you'll enjoy this book despite its shortcomings.

Sad to report another DNF for the year. this time I decided to abandon "The Davenports" at 35% read.
There is nothing wrong with it per se, however, if you are somebody who has read enough books, you might find this, like me, too basic, too simple. And just too boring.
