Iain M Banks: What is a weapon? What does it mean to use a weapon? Can a person be a weapon? Is there a difference between using a weapon and being a weapon? Is this difference meaningful? What kind of person would choose to be a weapon?
Also Iain M Banks: Here's a sapient starship with a scat fetish.

(spoiler free!) im currently reading the player of games by iain m banks and i love the way the main character is written so much. gergei hails from a post scarcity society, which means everyone gets whatever they want whenever they want it, and everyone has the absolute right to bodily autonomy and self determination. all needs are met, and there are no imposed prohibitions against anything. gergei happens to be an incredibly talented gamer, hes famous even for his ability to learn new games incredibly fast. the story is about him playing a game. his character is so compelling, and charismatic, and i am so cheesed to find a book this good. i need to get more 40 year old independent artist friends so i can get more book recommendations like this.

Not gonna lie, one of the funniest recurring things in Star Trek to me is showrunners complaining about replicators destroying plot tension.
Like I get that not everyone can be Iain Banks or Ursula Le Guin but there is something very gauche about just openly self-owning by admitting you're too unskilled/lazy to explore what tensions WOULD arise in a post-scarcity society.

To quote myself in a meme format:
If I had a nickle for every time I play a farming game with romance options, fully intending to enter a qpr with the one non human asexual coded character, and then saw a pretty lady and instantly became her girlfriend I would have two nickles which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice...
