McCarthy's Revenge Tour Continues As Allies Begin Funding Challengers to Those Who Ousted Him
Tumblr media
Kevin McCarthy is gone, but not forgotten. Particularly as he continues to take swipes at those who removed him from the one seat he wanted more than anything else - the Speaker's Chair.
He's been out there insulting Nancy Mace and Matt Gaetz, two of the people responsible for his ouster, and apparently he's not content to just lob insults. As previously reported, he's also planning his revenge tour against the party he said he would fight for.
READ MORE: Kevin McCarthy Planning 'Revenge Operation' Against Those Who Ousted Him
McCarthy's team has been working on his revenge plan, which was first announced back in February by POLITICO.
A top McCarthy ally, Brian O. Walsh, is overseeing an attempt to recruit primary challengers to take on members of the infamous “Gaetz Eight” — the Capitol’s nickname for Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and seven Republicans who supported his fire-McCarthy push — according to six people familiar with the plans who were granted anonymity to discuss them.
It appears now that those allies are launching their first attacks in the form of ads being aired in the districts of the Gaetz Eight.
The American Prosperity Alliance has ties to the former speaker, and they are beginning to launch attack ads against several of those House members.
Good has a primary challenge from state Sen. John McGuire in his Virginia district. In South Carolina, Mace will go up against Catherine Templeton, a former gubernatorial candidate. And Crane, the lone freshman to vote against McCarthy, will face former Yavapai County Supervisor Jack Smith in Arizona. All three have been elected with significant support from groups that McCarthy helped fund, including the Congressional Leadership Fund and the House GOP campaign arm. This is likely an opening salvo for McCarthy allies. The seven-figure buy will run in 12 districts total, but only some will see TV advertising and other will get only digital ads. The full list includes seats held by Reps. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.) — all of whom also voted out McCarthy — and Reps. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), Jared Golden (D-Maine), Gabe Vasquez (D-N.M.), Matt Cartwright (D-Pa.), Henry Cuellar (D-Texas) and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.).
The American Prosperity Alliance has already spent "$330,000 against Mace, nearly $160,000 against Good, roughly $218,000 against Crane and $150,000 against Kaptur," POLITICO reports.
Again, former McCarthy adviser Brian Walsh is at the center of the attack. You should know that Walsh has a long history of attacking Republicans. He worked for a while at the National Republican Senatorial Committee, and is a creature of Establishment Washington if there ever was one.
While at the NRSC during the early Tea Party era, Walsh helped mastermind the Establishment's attack ads against Ken Buck in Colorado. He also aligned the NRSC for Charlie Crist in Florida and Trey Grayson in Kentucky, as well as against Mike Lee in Utah when he launched his bid to oust Bob Bennett.
Walsh was also, at one point, a columnist for US News - a gig where he did not disclose that he was still getting paid by the NRSC to, as my colleague Streiff put it all those years ago, "carry water for Mitch McConnell... by trashing conservative organizations."
So, when it comes to attacking Republicans instead of actually advocating for conservatism, McCarthy has himself a damn expert in the field.
But this is what we can expect from someone who spent his entire career climbing the social and professional ladders of Washington D.C. Being starved of that glory and attention is bringing out the worst in him. He's like a desperate heroin junkie but with the ability to have advisers and allies with deep pockets (all of whom are encouraging his addiction rather than urging him to seek help).
I would like to tell McCarthy to grow the hell up, get over it, and just go home. I really would. But he can't. He is incapable of letting it go and admitting that he gave away so many of his principles and so much of his power negotiating his way to the top that he had nothing left. He certainly had no allies among conservatives. He just had creatures of Washington, the consultant class grifters like Brian Walsh, to assist in his petty revenge tour.
It's just very sad.

5 Tips for Planning Your End-of-Year Office Celebration
Organizing the end-of-year office celebration is always fun and rewarding. You may get a curveball here and there, but throwing the annual party is the perfect opportunity to show your team a fantastic time and demonstrate your sincere appreciation for their hard work.
Tumblr media
From the venue to entertainment to outstanding corporate catering, you have a lot on your plate. But despite all the work it takes to organize a first-rate shindig, the process itself doesn’t need to be stressful. Here are five tips to help you put together a memorable celebration. Start with a Budget We’ve all imagined what the ideal office party would look like if cost wasn’t a factor. But every business has to keep an eye on the bottom line, so your end-of-year celebration needs to come in under budget. Whether you have autonomy here or need to run it past leadership, make sure the number you land on is realistic but not overly restrictive. Then, use tracking tools to keep an eye on your spend. You may have to do some of this manually, but when it comes to food, the leading corporate catering partner has a convenient online dashboard that does the tracking for you. Pick a Place The venue is a key element of any office party. It sets the tone and can also have a significant impact on your budget. Establish your priorities early and decide whether you want to shell out for a night at that swanky chateau or you’d rather hold the festivities at your office so you can spend more on food and entertainment. You should also consider renting only the space and handling the catering yourself as a means of saving money. For example, a business located in the heart of the Hoosier state could order the finest catering Indianapolis has to offer for a celebration at the Crane Bay Event Center, Indianapolis Propylaeum, or even the Indiana Roof Ballroom. Recognize Your Top Performers Your annual office celebration is perfect for acknowledging your top achievers and highlighting their accomplishments over the past year. These are the people who go the extra mile on a daily basis to fuel your organization’s success. How you go about this is up to you, of course. You could reward them with extra PTO, their photo on the wall in the reception area, or an etched glass trophy to display at their desk. Order Catering Everyone Will Love You’ll notice we’ve already touched on food a few times in this piece. That’s because the right meal will elevate any event, and the end-of-year office party is no exception. You could roll the dice and rely on the catering team at the venue you booked for the event. Odds are, they’ll do a fine job. But nobody knows your team’s food preferences better than you, so why not put that knowledge to work and order their favorites yourself? Whether you’re looking for the most delicious catering Columbus Ohio, Dallas Texas, or Miami Florida has to offer, the right corporate catering partner makes all the difference. Have a Plan to Get Everyone Home Safely At the end of the evening, it’s essential that everyone makes it home safely. Whether you book several taxis or offer to comp rideshares, arranging travel for any team members who may need it might be the very best way to show them how much you care. With all they’ve done for your business this year, your team deserves to let loose a bit and enjoy themselves responsibly. Helping them do that, then get home safely, is how you can show them you have their back. There were no injuries.Įven with that setback, according to Falco the Lumen project is on schedule and on budget. The $135 million construction project had a hiccup in October 2018 when several steel beams dropped from the crane and damaged an adjoining parking garage. Playhouse Square also nicknamed the crane Ichabod the Crane and started a Twitter account for Ichabod.Ĭleveland looks great from up here! Check out for a live webcam of me! /hgsYPywA9A Since then, Playhouse Square has sought ways to get the community excited about and interacting with the construction project, including a live webcam with a bird's-eye view of the construction maintained by Gilbane Building Company, the contractor for the Lumen project. For theater-goers, drop-off and valet will also be available in front of the Connor Palace, but drivers will have to come in from Chester Avenue to East 17 th to Euclid Avenue. Sidewalks on Euclid Avenue and the crosswalk at East 14 th will remain open. It will take a few days for construction crews to disassemble the crane completely, so Euclid Avenue between East 18 th and East 14 th streets is scheduled to be closed through Saturday, but inclement weather could delay that process. Weather permitting, the crane should be completely down by the end of the weekend. “Most of the work from this point on will be completing the apartment units.” “The project is now completely enclosed with glass,” Falco said. The crane towering over the Euclid Avenue construction site of the Lumen building in Playhouse Square comes down this week.ĭismantling the crane means the exterior of the 400-foot tall high-rise apartment is almost complete, said Art Falco, Playhouse Square’s senior advisor for special projects.

Today we remember the passing of Jani Lane who Died: August 11, 2011 in Woodland Hills, California
Jani Lane (born John Kennedy Oswald; February 1, 1964 – August 11, 2011) was an American recording artist and the lead vocalist, frontman, lyricist and main songwriter for the glam metal band Warrant. From Hollywood, California, the band experienced success from 1989 to 1996 with five albums reaching international sales of over 10 million. Lane left Warrant in 2004 and again in 2008 after a brief reunion. Lane also released a solo album, Back Down to One, in 2003, and the album Love the Sin, Hate the Sinner with a new group, Saints of the Underground, in 2008. Lane contributed lead vocals and songwriting to various projects throughout his career.
Lane was born John Kennedy Oswald (later changed to John Patrick Oswald), on February 1, 1964 in Akron, Ohio to Robert and Eileen Oswald. He was raised in Brimfield with four older siblings: sisters Marcine Williams, Michelle Robinson and Victoria Ley, plus older brother Eric, already an accomplished guitarist. With sisters Micki and Vicky and brother Eric harmonizing and playing guitar, Lane taught himself to play drums, guitar and piano by ear by age five. He grew up listening to Cleveland rock station WMMS (100.7 FM "The Buzzard") and was introduced to a variety of music by his older siblings.
With connections from siblings Eric and Vicky in and around the music scene (and with his parents' help), Lane made a name for himself at a very young age. He played drums under the pseudonym "Mitch Dynamite" in clubs by age 11 and with a local band "Pokerface." By that time, his siblings had left for college or marriage, although Vicky was still active in the entertainment industry in northeast Ohio and southwest Florida. Due to Vicky's numerous connections, Lane was able to network with industry execs in pursuit of his dream. Lane graduated from Field High School, in Mogadore, Ohio, a nearby city to Brimfield in 1982.
Lane is credited as the vocalist/drummer on Warrant's Latest and Greatest CD. Throughout his career, Lane would sometimes play drums/acoustic guitar and piano with his band and played the drums in various formats and gigs with other musicians.
After high school, Lane joined the band Cyren, featuring vocalist Skip Hammonds, guitarist John Weakland, bassist Don Hoover (and later Rusty Fohner) with Lane on drums and vocals. Many of Cyren's shows opened for a popular local band called Risque'. When their bassist, Al Collins, noticed Lane's vocal talents, he convinced Lane to form a new band they eventually called Dorian Gray. The new band also included Steven Chamberlin on drums and Dave Chamberlin on lead guitar. Dorian Gray was designed to have Lane as the lead vocalist and to perform original material, but Lane wasn't ready to be the lead singer and quickly returned to the drum kit. Billy Denmead was hired as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist. After only a few shows, Collins left the band, vowing to put a band together when Lane was ready to be a lead vocalist.
Lane moved to Florida in 1983 with Dorian Gray. He eventually formed Plain Jane with Collins and Chamberlin, adopting the stage name "Jani Lane" (Chamberlin would also soon rechristen himself Steven Sweet). He took the name "Jani" from his German grandparents, who spelled his name "Jani" and pronounced it "Yay-nee."
Lane began vocal training with vocal coach/trainer Ron Feldmann, who introduced him to Creative Engineering, Inc. in Orlando. Lane worked there as a programmer of the animatronic character Dook LaRue, the drummer for The Rock-afire Explosion. His vocal debut was at The Station in Fern Park, Florida.
Lane, Collins, and Chamberlin recorded the first Plain Jane four-track demos at their rented house in Winter Park, Florida. Although reluctant to leave Florida, they rented a trailer in the spring of 1984 and moved to California with hopes of landing a record deal. They were broke by the time they landed at the Hollywood Bowl Motel and resorted to making sandwiches with mustard packets while taking turns calling their parents for cash.
Struggling to make ends meet as a musician, Lane resorted to working in a pornographic video warehouse. The band, along with a new road crew and a few girlfriends, pooled their wages and lived in a two-bedroom condominium rented by new Plain Jane guitarist Paul Noble. At one time there were 13 people living in the crowded space.
By 1985, Plain Jane had become a regular feature on the Los Angeles club circuit and opened many shows for a band called Warrant. Plain Jane's bassist and guitarist both left the band on the same day Warrant's singer and drummer quit. Erik Turner, who had founded Warrant in July 1984, was impressed by Plain Jane's songwriting and vocal performance and invited Lane and Sweet to jam with his band at Hollywood's db Sound in September 1986.
After generating notoriety on the club circuit, Warrant began to attract the attention of record labels. Following an abortive deal with A&M Records over a contribution to the soundtrack for the motion picture Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, the band signed with Columbia Records. The Columbia deal came via the partnering of Warrant and manager Tom Hulett, known for working with The Beach Boys, Elvis Presley, The Moody Blues and others. Hulett became Lane's mentor and friend until Hulett's death from cancer in 1993.
As lead vocalist with Warrant, Lane wrote all of the material for the band's 1989 debut double platinum album, Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich, including four Top 40 hit singles: "Down Boys", "Sometimes She Cries", "Big Talk" and the No. 2 Billboard Hot 100 hit "Heaven." The album peaked at no. 10 on The Billboard 200. Lane also wrote four Top 40 hit singles ("Cherry Pie," "I Saw Red," "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "Blind Faith") for the second album, the 1990 double platinum Cherry Pie, which peaked at no. 7 on the Billboard 200. Lane also co-wrote and performed with Warrant the song "The Power" in the 1992 movie Gladiator. In 1992, Warrant released Dog Eat Dog, their gold third album, which peaked at no. 25 on the Billboard 200.
Lane left Warrant in March 1993 to pursue a solo career. He returned six months later, helping the band secure a new record with Tom Lipsky of CMC International. Warrant recorded Ultraphobic in 1995, Belly to Belly in 1996, Greatest & Latest in 1999 and a cover album, Under the Influence, in 2001.
Due to personal and business disagreements, Lane left Warrant again in 2004. In January 2008, the band's agent, The William Morris Agency, issued a new photograph of the band with Lane prominently featured, confirming his return to the band. It was the first time that all original members had been in the band since 1993. The band's first show with all original members was in May 2008 in Nashville, Tennessee. Warrant performed a series of shows during the summer of 2008, but by September, the band and Lane agreed to move forward separately due to "too much water under the bridge." Warrant and Lane both continued to perform Lane's compositions live and Lane continued to write for himself and other artists.
Lane became involved in acting in the early 1990s. He made a brief appearance in Caged Fear and appeared in High Strung in 1991.
In 1993, Lane started working on his first solo project. Titled "Jabberwocky," the album represented a significant musical departure from previous work. Between 1997 and 2000, demos of Lane's solo material began surfacing on the Internet, with some bids on eBay reaching an estimated $100 per copy. In 2002, Lane decided to postpone the "Jabberwocky" project and released a new project as his debut solo album. The "Jabberwocky" project remained unreleased.
Lane's official debut solo album, Back Down to One, was released on June 17, 2003 through Z Records and in the U.S. in 2006 on Immortal/Sidewinder Records. It carried a "power pop" sound more closely aligned with the sound of Warrant than "Jabberwocky." Shortly after the album's release, Lane was admitted to a rehabilitation center for alcohol and drug-related exhaustion.
In the fall of 2004, Lane contributed lead vocals for the first ever theme song to a novel, Billy McCarthy's "The Devil of Shakespeare," along with James Young from Styx, Ron Flynt of 20/20 and Chip Z'Nuff of Enuff Z'Nuff.
Lane contributed vocals on the track "Bastille Day" and "2112 Overture/Temples of Syrinx" for the Magna Carta 2005 Rush tribute album "Subdivisions."
Lane had success with the "VH1 Classic Metal Mania: Stripped" discs, where the acoustic version of "I Saw Red" was included on disc 1, a new acoustic swinging version of "Cherry Pie" featured on disc 2, and a new acoustic version of "Heaven" featured on disc 3.
In 2005, Lane became a fan favorite on the popular VH1 series Celebrity Fit Club 2. His problems with alcohol were highlighted and many viewers supported his efforts at recovery.
With the reissue and U.S. release of "Back Down to One" in 2006, Lane attempted to restart his version of Warrant. Although "Back Down to One" was credited as a solo release, Lane assembled a new touring band called "Jani Lane's Warrant." The band's first shows in Michigan were stopped by legal action from former bandmates objecting to his use of the Warrant logo on his posters. Lane subsequently continued touring without the Warrant name and logo.
Lane lent his vocals to numerous tribute CDs during the 2000s. In 2007, he released a solo cover album titled "Photograph," featuring a collection of his tribute contributions.
Keri Kelli and Lane wrote a song for Alice Cooper titled "The One That Got Away." It was recorded by Cooper on his 2008 record Along Came a Spider. Lane also finished work on a side project, Saints of the Underground, which included Kelli and Bobby Blotzer and Robbie Crane, (both from Ratt). Their album, Love the Sin, Hate the Sinner, was released on April 22, 2008 by Warrior Records, and was mixed by producer/engineer Andy Johns, who'd worked with The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. The album featured additional bass work by Chuck Wright (Quiet Riot, House of Lords). The band was originally called "Angel City Outlaws" when they posted their first two promo singles, "Bruised" and "Exit."
In summer 2010, Lane toured with Great White, filling in for singer Jack Russell, who was recuperating from surgery after suffering internal complications.
On August 11, 2011, the Los Angeles Police Department and local news stations announced that Lane was found dead of acute alcohol poisoning at a Comfort Inn hotel in Woodland Hills, California at the age of 47. Lane was pronounced dead by fire department personnel who responded to a call shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Masterlist & Chapter 1
Chapter 3
Cleveland, Ohio
Spike and Andrew arrived in Cleveland shortly before sunup, much to Spike's relief. Andrew was a bit of an erratic driver and if Spike wasn't already dead, he might have bothered to fear for his life. He had never been to Cleveland before. Never had a reason to. Sure there was a hellmouth, but why would anyone choose it over California? Ohio was a flyover state for a reason. What'd they even have in Ohio? Corn?
Andrew parked the car outside of what looked to be an abandoned warehouse in the industrial district on the outskirts of the city. The windows were all dark and Spike couldn't hear or see a soul around. There was a faint scent of iron in the air that smelled almost like blood, but Spike could tell it was actually emanating from the slowly corroding metal walls of the warehouse. Unlike Spike, the building wasn't timeless. He raised an eyebrow at Andrew, but the eccentric Watcher-in-training was already jumping out of the car. Spike followed after him, only hesitating for a moment. Could barely be called hesitation really. Just... taking a breath. That he didn't really need. Bugger it. It's not like Andrew noticed.
"If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were trying to off me," Spike commented as he looked over at the group of motionless cranes dangling equipment that likely violated several OSHA regulations.
Andrew laughed with a grating kind of chortle that for a second brought Spike back to a different time. At Buffy's house, back when they were still at war with The First. He waved off the memory. No point in getting all sentimental. What's done is done and over.
"No silly," Andrew replied. "This is where Willow said to meet."
"Nice digs. Perfect spot for a demon."
Andrew rolled his eyes at the quip and opened the rusting metal door, motioning for Spike to enter. Spike eyed the door, surprised it hadn't crashed down off its tracks.
"Alright then," Spike said as he walked into the darkness. No point in arguing.
Inside, the warehouse was completely empty except for the heavy coating of dirt covering the spalling concrete floor...and a strange rectangular pool of what looked like liquid silver situated at its center. Andrew's footsteps echoed behind him in the cavernous space as Spike moved to get a better look at the curious centerpiece. Despite the lack of light, the silver pool seemed to shimmer and emitted a faint glow. Probably radiation. Spike took a couple of steps back from the man-sized pool.
"Now hold up a minute," he said, turning on Andrew. "Pretty sure the mercury baths went out of style." He held a finger up for emphasis. "And, if memory serves, Xander was the one with the syphilis problem."
Andrew ignored him and walked to the edge of the pool. "It's a portal. You coming or are you just gonna stand there?"
With that, Andrew stepped off the ledge and disappeared beneath the surface of silver. Spike stared after him.
"Right, quick trip to hell. Was getting bored anyway. Well, if that git can do it," Spike muttered.
He ran after him and leapt into the pool. For some reason he had expected it to burn, like molten lava. Instead, he felt absolutely nothing, not even as his head sunk under the waves. And then everything was unnaturally bright.
Spike winced away before realizing it wasn't the sun, just orbs of floating white light scattered throughout the sizable room. He recognized the type. This was a magic shop. A multi-dimensional magic shop.
The shop was quiet despite its size and selection. Spike recognized more than a few rare items that would fetch quite the price on the black market... if one was into that sort of thing. The shelves were fully stocked with spell books, grimoires, various herbs, crystals, and other magical curios. It made the old Sunnydale magic shop look like the kiddie leagues.
Sitting at a long oval table in the center of the room was Willow, dressed in clothes that looked a day old with a cold cup of coffee sitting next to her. The red-headed witch was surrounded by books scattered around her on both the table and the floor. She didn't even look up at their arrival. It seemed that - apart from Spike and Andrew - she was the only one in the shop.
"Hey Willow," Andrew said, giving her a little wave. "I got Spike."
Willow looked up from a particularly thick tome covered in a language Spike didn't recognize. She gave a small smile that did nothing to hide the worry on her face or the exhaustion in her eyes.
"Hey guys," she said. "Good to have you on the team."
"Any luck so far?" Andrew asked.
Willow shook her head. "Nothing. There's nothing about mass memory loss in slayers. Of course, there have never been multiple slayers before so. You know, we're back in uncharted territory."
Spike cut in hesitantly, "And Buffy?"
He thought he caught an odd expression cross Willow's face, but it had been a while since he'd seen her. Maybe it was normal.
"I still haven't been able to reach her," Willow replied. "I just got here last night. Called in a favor to a friend and got us a lease on this magic shop 'til we figure out what's going on. I'm hoping Giles will know more."
"Well we should go check on her then!" Spike said, throwing up a hand. "Slayer wandering around out of her head? It's a death sentence."
Willow pursed her lips and glanced over at Andrew uneasily. "We can't. Or...well we're not sure we should. It's not just memory loss."
She paused and Spike began to get more and more agitated. There was something they hadn't been telling him. Something bad.
"During the blackouts," Willow continued, "you know, the times they can't remember? Well, we think that there's someone...else. Someone else is controlling their actions, it's almost like they're possessed. But whatever is doing it-"
"It's a scary good copy," Andrew blurted out.
Willow nodded. "It knows about their lives, how they act, their friends. It even goes on doing the regular day-to-day slayage duties. But we've noticed some things are just a bit...off."
"What do you mean, off?" Spike pressed.
"Well...one of 'em did try killing Angel a few days back," Andrew replied. "They had been working together temporarily and apparently she just snapped one day."
"Well I don't see the problem there," Spike said with a grin.
"Another one didn't recognize her parents when they came for a visit," Willow added. "She hadn't seen them since becoming a slayer and just nothing. Freaked them right out. But she remembered everyone else, insisted they weren't her family though."
"Okay, yeah, a bit odd," Spike conceded.
"And then, two days ago, Giles was training with one of the London slayers when her fighting style switched from streetfighter novice to jujitsu master in the span of a minute." Willow sighed. "And that's when I did a revealing spell. There were was something in her that wasn't her. We don't even know when we're talking with the real person...or the other. Whatever it is."
"And that's why you haven't contacted Buffy," Spike stated.
Willow nodded. "We don't want to spook...it."
"Yeah who knows, it could run off to Timbuktu with Buffy's body," Andrew agreed with a vigorous nod.
"Andrew, could you get me some cannis root from the back storage?" Willow asked him. "I need to do a translation spell."
"Sure, of course!" Andrew replied as he scampered off behind the rows of shelves.
Spike pulled out a chair and took a seat next to Willow at the table without speaking.
"It's good to see you, Spike," Willow said without smiling. "I just wish you would've told us before disaster struck again."
"Yeah." He nodded slowly. "Well, being back in the land of the living has been one should've after another I suppose." He fumbled the pack of cigarettes from his pocket and lit one up with a flick from his lighter. "Do you think-"
"I don't know if she'll be glad to see you," Willow said, answering the unspoken question. "I don't know."
"Right."
Spike sighed as he exhaled a cloud of smoke. Andrew returned with a large jar of what looked like...well, roots. Willow took it from him and set the jar aside without opening it. It seemed the cannis root had just been a task to keep Andrew busy. Spike wasn't surprised. Andrew took a seat at the table and began perusing through some of the scattered books. Spike watched as the two continued their research. It wasn't really his forte.
What felt like hours later - though he knew it had only been minutes - Spike heard the sound of footsteps behind him. Familiar tread. Instant irritation. Bollocks.
"No. Oh, no. No, no, no, no. No way. What the hell is he doing here?" Xander exclaimed as he squinted in the light.

!!! ohh i'd love to hear about some of your stex ocs if you'd like to talk about them!!
Ooh yes I'd love to! I've got six main ones, I'll give a bit of info on each of them:
Pasha is one of my first OCs. She's a green seating car, and very calm and level-headed. She escaped from a scrapyard with Wrecker, her BFF, and often acts as his emotional support.
Wrecker a red breakdown crane and Pasha's best friend, he's very jumpy and nervous. He escaped from the scrapyard but he hasn't fully recovered from his time there yet, and he's often terrified he'll be sent back. Pasha's helping him though :)
Stamp was the third OC I made, but I abandoned them for a while before reviving him earlier this year. He's an R.P.O (Railway Post Office), and while he was originally a red Royal Mail car, they're now a blue Baltimore and Ohio car! He's very friendly and sociable, and goes by he/they pronouns!
Callaina is probably actually my favourite design-wise. She's a Pleasure Dome lounge car from Santa Fe, she's very self-centered and spoiled on the surface, but deep down just struggles with social interactions and wants some friends. (Also loves ducks!)
Fay and Lee are my newest OCs, and I personally think they have the best inspiration. They're a double-ended Fairlee locomotive (which look so cool, definitely look them up!). In their humanoid form they're conjoined, which does cause some frustration occasionally, but ultimately they like being together. Fay (the sister) is the more outgoing of the two, whilst Lee (the brother) is more reserved. However they both love playing pranks on other rolling stock, it's like a bonding thing for them. Plus they're a narrow gauge engine, which makes them very little!
Thank you sm for this ask, I love talking about my ocs a lot! 💖✨

Style Over Substance Abuse - Film Review: Cherry ★★1/2
Tumblr media
Some filmmakers start out small and dream of hitting the big time with a major studio contract.  Once they’ve reached that pinnacle, which would no doubt have included great compromise and a whittling away of their authentic voices, some dream of scaling back and making a little indie. Take the Russo Brothers, Joe and Anthony, for example.  This Cleveland duo started out their feature directing careers with such little seen low-budget works as Pieces and Welcome To Collinwood.  They rose through the ranks and have now made the most successful box office film to date with Avengers: End Game. With what seems like a drive to return to their Ohio roots, they’ve made Cherry, based on Nico Walker’s semi-autobiographical novel and adapted by their sister Angela Russo-Otstot and Jessica Goldberg.
The trouble is, this 15 years spanning story of a young college dropout who reacts to getting dumped by his girlfriend by becoming an Army medic, returns home with severe PTSD, develops an addiction to opioids, and resorts to robbing banks to feed the beast, does not play out as an intimate little Sundance gem. It’s as if the Russos told the studios, “We’ve made you ALL the money, so now let us use ALL of the toys to make something meaningful.” Now don’t get me wrong, Cherry is a stunning looking film. Every shot has boldness, life, and energy. The production design, the early aughts period detail, even the look of its Cleveland streets are all eye-popping. As a person who grew up near Cleveland, I can attest to its perfectly captured brown brick/grey skies aesthetic.  Despite its epic, nearly 2 1/2 hour running time, it never drags. Tom Holland and his incredible costars shine. You could watch this film without sound and think it’s the most cinematic, perfect movie you’ve ever seen.
So what’s the problem? It’s all just too much. Playing like a “Greatest Hits” mashup of Goodfellas, Full Metal Jacket, Zero Dark Thirty, Trainspotting, and Dog Day Afternoon, to name a few, Cherry goes big, but doesn’t go home. Using impressionism, surrealism, varying aspect ratios, voiceovers, bold chyron messaging, and every type of drone, dolly, and crane possible, we don’t so much as get inside our main character’s head as watch it explode all over the screen. It’s certainly a valid approach, and it sets it apart from so many uninspired independent films of its ilk, but it results in holding its emotional resonance at a distance.  You may chuckle when our unnamed lead character, nicknamed “Cherry”, robs banks called Shitty One or Capitalist None, but it feels like showing off instead of making us really feel for the human beings at its center. At its core, this film wants to tackle the very serious subject of addiction, yet the style gets in the way.  One of my favorite films on the topic, Sid And Nancy, had one flight of fancy in which the title characters kissed in an alley as garbage fell down on them from the sky, but kept things mostly real otherwise. Cherry is 141 minutes of garbage falling down from the sky.
Again, that may sound harsh, but I don’t blame the Russo Brothers for wanting to strut their stuff. They clearly have talent, and I’d love to see a film in which they learned to calm the fuck down. They certainly get great work from their cast. Tom Holland gives a heartbreaking, intimate performance filled with such vulnerability that you wish the camera would stop swooshing around him long enough for us to experience his great empathy better. Same goes for Ciara Bravo as his girlfriend who goes way down the rabbit hole of addiction with him. She starts out as your standard issue manic pixie dream girl only to erupt into palpable ferocity as things grow dire. Jack Raynor brings some much-needed comic relief as their preppy drug dealer known only as “Pills & Coke”.
The film keeps raising the question of whether or not Holland’s character deserves to have friends, a partner, love. It’s one we’ve seen before in films about addicts, yet this one stumbles badly in its final act, which amounts to a yadda-yadda montage during an incredibly important transition for our lead, only to dump him out the other side of it with an oddly tone-deaf, treacly  final moment. They would have earned those final few seconds had we not been subjected to a decade-long chapter distilled into a few minutes of screen time. You’ll want to yell, “Run!” to someone onscreen instead of thinking, “Awwwwww”

Bizarre Deaths
Death is everywhere and can visit us at any time. This is no more evident than in these examples of death coming from the most unexpected of sources.
Death is the inevitable end to everyone’s story. We spend most of our lives avoiding it, hoping we will die well into old age without pain or suffering. Yet sometimes death has other, more unusual plans for us, providing strange but timely reminders of our own mortality.
There are lots of strange ways to die, but here are ten examples of really bizarre deaths that came from the most unexpected of sources.
1. DEATH BY BEARD
Having the world’s longest beard certainly comes with its complications. For Hans Steininger, these complications ended in his death. During a fire in town, Steininger hurriedly retreated and forgot to pick up his beard. The beard got tangled in his feet and he fell awkwardly, breaking his neck and killing him.
2. DEATH BY JURY DEMONSTRATION
A lawyer by the name of Clement Vallandingham was attempting to prove his client’s innocence during his trial in 1871. The client was on trial for murder, but Vallandingham believed that the victim had actually shot himself and was not murdered. In court, he showed the jury how he believed the victim killed himself, but apparently forgot to check the chamber. Vallandingham shot himself and ultimately died in front of the court.
3. DEATH BY NECKLACE BOMB
This has to be the story behind the film 30 Minutes or Less because it is remarkably similar; albeit much less funny and more deadly. Pizza deliveryman Brian Well was apprehended during a bank robbery but claimed that it wasn’t as it seemed. Police didn’t believe his story that he had been forced to rob a bank by a group of people he had delivered pizza to. He warned them that he had a bomb around his neck, but it seems they just wouldn’t listen. Wells was killed when the necklace exploded.
4. DEATH BY SWIMMING POOL DRAIN
Abigail Taylor died 9 months after several of her internal organs were partially sucked out of her lower body while she sat on an excessively powerful swimming pool drain. Surgeons replaced her intestines and pancreas with donor organs but unfortunately, the 6-year-old girl died from a rare transplant-related cancer.
5. DEATH BY SHEEP
Betty Stobbs was attempting to feed her sheep one afternoon when things went horribly wrong. She loaded a bale of hay onto her motorcycle and took it to where she kept her sheep. When she got there, the excited sheep ran after her and knocked her and her motorcycle into a canyon. The fall didn’t kill her, but the motorcycle landing on her head did. While the sheep were certainly culpable in the death, admittedly this may technically be more of a death by motorcycle situation.
6. DEATH BY HOARDING
Homer and Langley Collyer had a problem throwing things away. They were bonafide hoarders and their house was filled with junk. Eventually, the junk around their house took control and the two were found dead, buried beneath their pounds and pounds of junk.
7. DEATH BY ROBOTS
They’re coming! They already got one of us! Truth be told, this appears to be more of a negligence death rather than a sci-fi murderous robot. Robert Williams was working at a Ford casting plant when he stepped into the line of fire to remove a faulty part. One of the robotic arms activated and smashed him in the head, killing him.
8. DEATH BY ELEVATOR
Dr. Hitoshi Christopher Nikaidoh was decapitated as he stepped on to an elevator at Christus St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, Texas in 2003. According to witnesses, the elevator doors closed as Nikaidoh entered, trapping his head inside the elevator with the remainder of his body still outside. A subsequent investigation revealed that improper electrical wiring installed by a maintenance company several days earlier had effectively bypassed all of the elevator’s safeguards, enabling it to move under any circumstances.
9. DEATH BY ORANGE PEEL
Daredevil Bobby Leach stared death in the face many times. He was the second person history to ever survive his fall from Niagara Falls in a barrel. He probably assumed that he would die during one of his stunts, but his death came in a much less exciting manner. While walking down the street in New Zealand, Leach stepped on an orange peel his feet went out from underneath him. He broke his leg and was taken to the hospital, but later died due to complications.
10. DEATH BY CACTUS
David Grundman and his buddy were having a grand-old-time shooting cacti in a desert one evening in 1982. When the 26-foot-tall cactus was shot, it fell and crushed Grundman, avenging its fallen cactus brothers. ____________________________________
Take a look at some of Some more most bizarre deaths
1. Death By Turtle In 455 BC, the Greek author Aeschylus was supposedly killed when an eagle dropped a turtle on his skull. 2. Death By Beard In 1567, Hans Steininger was killed upon breaking his neck. The accident occurred after he tripped on his own beard, which was 4.5 ft long! 3. Death By Food In 1771, King Adolf Frederick of Sweden died after he consumed a massive meal. The meal consisted of lobster, caviar, sauerkraut, kippers, champagne and 14 servings of desert. 4. Death By Effective Defense Strategy In 1871, a defense attorney, Clement Vallendigham, from the great state of Ohio passed away after shooting himself. He did so whilst demonstrating that the victim in the trial could have shot himself, rather than being murdered by his client. The defendant was found innocent. 5. Death By Shaving In 1923, George Herbert, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon (that’s in Wales), died after he cut open a mosquito bite while shaving. It became infected and killed him soon after from pneumonia. 6. Death By Acting In 1958, Gareth Jones, an actor, died on a heart attack in between scenes in a TV play. His character was supposed to die in the same way. 7. Death By Machine In 1979, Robert Williams, who worked in a Ford Motor Company factory, made history as the first person killed by a robot. He was struck in the head by one of the cranes. 8. Death By Window In 1993, A Toronto lawyer fell to his death after hurling himself at a window on the 24th floor of the Toronto-Dominion Center. He was trying to prove that the glass was unbreakable – and he was sort of right. The glass never broke but, rather, it popped out of place and fell to the ground with him. 9. Death By Wee In 2007, a woman by the name of Jennifer Strange fell victim to bladder failure and died during a promotional radio contest called, “Hold Your Wee For Wii,” in which contestants attempted to go the longest without peeing in order to win a Nintendo Wii. 10. Death By Nature In 2009, Canadian folk singer Taylor Mitchell became the only recorded adult person to be killed by coyotes after they attacked her in Cape Breton Highlands National Park. 11. Death By Choking In 2012, a man died after choking on a cockroach during a roach-eating contest. 12. Death By Selfie In 2014, Oscar Otero Aguilar, 21, died after shooting himself in the head while posing for a selfie with a loaded handgun.

LeVeque Tower and Ohio Judicial Center, Columbus, Ohio Source: Ohio History Connection
I love this photo!
From the archive:
This photograph shows the American Insurance Union Citadel (now LeVeque Tower) and the Ohio State Office Building (now the Ohio Judicial Center), as view from the opposite bank of the Scioto River, underneath the Town Street Bridge.
The American Insurance Union Citadel, located at 50 West Broad Street at the corner of Front Street, was designed by architect C. Howard Crane in the Art Deco style with touches of a more modern version of the Byzantine.  The 47-story tall skyscraper, designed mainly as office space, rises to an elevation of 555.5 feet, and was built to be 6 inches taller than the Washington Monument.  Two 18-story wings flank the building; on the east, the 4,000 seat Keith-Albee Theater (now the Palace Theater), and on the west the 600 room Deshler-Wallick Hotel.  The steel-frame building, completed in 1927 at a cost of $7,800,000, was the first building in Ohio to be erected on a caisson foundation.  It was the fifth tallest building in the world for a time, and the tallest building in the city until 1974. Due to the Great Depression the American Insurance Union went bankrupt, and sold the building.  The tower was purchased by John Lincoln and Leslie L. LeVeque in 1945. LeVeque was the designer of an automatic pinsetter for bowling which became known as the Columbus pinsetter. The Lincoln-LeVeque Tower was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975 and in 1977, the name was officially changed to the LeVeque Tower. The building changed hands to Lennar Properties in 2004, and then again to the new owners Finsilver/Friedman Management, a Michigan based regional developer and property manager.

TREMOGLIE: Forget the Gossip and Remember the Facts; Re-Elect Lauren Boebert
Tumblr media
Politicians are elected for their political beliefs and actions. For members of Congress, votes and advocacy group endorsements are useful methods for assessing a candidate’s beliefs and actions. If Colorado voters do this Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) will have no problem being re-elected. She is right-of-center, acts with common sense, and thinks of America first.
Consider the following votes by Boebert and the organizations endorsing her:
She voted to protect Americans from the abuses of Tik Tok (HR7521)
She voted against the 2021 George Floyd Justice in Policing Act
She voted for the Laken Riley Act
She supports increasing security along the Southern border
She has been endorsed by the National Right to Life Committee, the NRA, the National Federation of Independent Businesses, Campaign for Working Families, Colorado Shooters Assoc. and Citizens Against Government Waste
The holier-than-thou hypocrisy of Democrats and of some Republicans is shameful. Since when have politicians in Sodom-and-Gomorrah-on-the-Potomac been concerned about sexual mores or behavior? Do they need to be reminded of the sexual escapades - while in office - of some of the most lauded members of the Senate, Congress, and White House? The roll call of Congressional and Presidential sexual infamy reads like a Who’s Who of the Washington DC Swamp.  Here is a partial list:
Democrats
President John F Kennedy and his alleged  White House swimming pool menage a trois
Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy and Mary Jo Kopechne and Chappaquidick
Arkansas Rep. Wilbur Mills found with the “Argentine Firecracker” stripper Fanne Foxe
Ohio Rep. Wayne Hays and Elizabeth Ray, who worked for him as a clerk despite not being able to type.
Sen. Gary Hart and Donna Rice who was on a boat trip with him to the Bahamas - while he was married.
Massachusetts Rep. Gerry Studds censured for having sex with a 17-year-old Congressional page
Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank fixing parking tickets for a male escort who lived with him and operated a homosexual prostitution ring from Frank's residence
Illinois Rep. Mel Reynolds who was convicted of statutory rape.
Republicans
Ohio Rep. Buz Lukens convicted of having sex with a 16-year-old girl
Mississippi Rep. Jon Hinson who fellated a male employee of the Library of Congress
Illinois Rep. Dan Crane, who had sex with a 17 year old Congressional page.
LA Rep. Bob Livingston., nominated for House Speaker but declined after his extramarital affairs were revealed
NM Sen. Pete Domenici had an extramarital affair and fathered a kid
IN Rep. Dan Burton also had an extramarital affair and fathered a kid
FL Rep. Mark Foley was accused of sending sexual emails to teenage male congressional pages
IL Rep. and House Speaker Dennis Hastert who admitted to molesting boys as a wrestling coach
This list does not include the infamous case of Democrat President Bill Clinton who was fellated by an intern half his age - Monica Lewinsky. Despite this, Democrats and feminists revere Clinton. They certainly rallied around him during his impeachment for perjury. Nor does this list include former NY Rep. Anthony Weiner, husband of Hillary Clinton’s close advisor Huma Abedin, who was convicted of sexting a minor girl.
The idea that Democrats and high-minded Republicans politicians pretend they find Lauren Boebert’s frisky behavior offensive is laughable given their history of tacitly condoning the sexual perversions and immorality of prominent Democrats and Republicans.
Coloradans need to worry about the issues and the problems facing our nation. They must elect the person whose voting record and political advocacy reflects their own beliefs.
On that score, Lauren Boebert is an impeccable candidate.
Michael P. Tremoglie is a retired columnist; his bylines include Philadelphia Bulletin, FrontPage Magazine, and others.

Power Rangers Zeo (Heather Ray).
The other night I sat with my family members around the table reminiscing and also telling old stories. We worked with our golf swing with equipment that measured our power in watts, and also took advantage of the complete line of Kinesis makers (their unique resistance cables allow for better series of activity). Power is depicted here as a shaping pressure, capable of generating its very own authenticity - whether it be possessed by mine proprietors, absentee companies, local elites, or even union bosses. The functional power cleaner provides a performance of a commercial equipment that utilizes 3.0 kilowatts induction motor with its 3 axial-piston brass pumps that helps generates an astonishing 2300 PSI stress power blasting 10 liters per minute water circulation. Microsoft billionaire Expense Gates has actually stated there is a 10% chance kite power can be the magic remedy" for international renewable energy demands. Additionally it has some filler which is unusual since this flick is hardly 80 mins which most likely offers you a respectable concept of how little possible the story has in this flick to be any kind of good. The fundamental structure was integrated in a workshop outside the city and then lifted right into the Colosseum by a giant crane. In http://verde-dieta.info/prolesan-pure-recenzii-pret-cum-functioneaza-recenzii-unde-sa-cumparati/ acquired rival chain LA Health and fitness as well as struck up a collaboration with Olympian Sir Chris Hoy, that is a special adviser as well as brand ambassador" to Pure Health club. Stories of the trip over and how thrilled he was to discover everything on the big ship (a seafarer, making the most of his inquisitiveness, convinced him to lift some papers pushing deck, to see what was below ...). Stories of working as a journeyman footwear technician in cities and communities across upstate New york city as well as Ohio (in one store, the foreman placed my grandfather and his turret in the front window so passers-by would quit to view exactly how quick as well as well he did his job). On the one hand, it consists of passages that John S. Wright could have written, as when it emphatically mentions, Chicago is currently facing the momentous truth that fifty years for this reason, when the children of to-day are at the elevation of their power as well as influence, this city will be bigger than London: that is, bigger than any existing city." On the various other hand, it declines the concept that the city's success can or should be assessed in terms of numbers alone, or that the future would certainly care for itself. Starting with our original list of about 51 health clubs (assembled from our round-up of the very best gyms of 2013, publicly available statistics, as well as other expert lists), we asked you to elect your favorites - likewise enabling write-in ballots to make up any type of health clubs that weren't pointed out on the initial listing. As soon as and also they don't have to all be on the same team either, you do not have to strike a fitness center alone; multiple individuals can attack a fitness center at. EPA established that the combination of utilizing of smokestack controls as well as contamination credit histories from shifting generation amongst plants makes up a well-demonstrated system of discharge reduction, one that is commonly utilized by the power industry both to meet inner targets and also prior government and also state guidelines. Freely based upon real occasions, Funny of Power had its North American launching at the 2006 Tribeca Film Festival. The platform lift can be found in a huge range of different models, each one with various attributes that make it far better fit for a details sort of job. Les plates-formes Power Plate ® constituent une parfaite alternate put les personnes actives qui n'ont pas beaucoup de temps à consacrer à un entraînement trois fois the same level semaine, voire plus. Control is a crucial element of the lift system and because of this they commonly provide power assisted drive. Some health clubs only enable teens to workout in the assigned youth facility area, while other gyms permit teens the exact same freedom to make use of the equipment as the adults. The originator of this franchise business identified that there was a huge market for a gym such as Curves and undoubtedly has taken advantage of a found diamond. You might be missing out if you are guilty of wrapping up your health club session as well as avoiding out on a cool down or stretch. Keltner's research suggests that women are not immune from this mystery, which claims that the very qualities that help us look for power-like beauty, compassion, or humbleness -are the ones that having power could harm. The power in an organization lies with supervisors and managers who have actually been enabled within the business framework, to make sure that the company could operate effectively. However nonverbally presenting power during the interaction - now that's an additional thing with different prescriptions and also end results. By the end of March, president Peter Roberts believes Pure Gym will have surpassed the 103 total of UK gyms run by Virgin Energetic, the present primary driver. This stair lift has a lifting ability of 300 lb or 136 kg. A flip-up swivel seat that secures placement and also constant stress buttons are various other functions of this straight stair lift. While a lot of exclusive health clubs serve teenagers and grownups, a couple of select health clubs just enable teens. Picked this for ideas to supplement my barbell-based routine, for when I can not get to the health club, and to help my wife with suggestions to do in your home & health club. His afternoon training sessions at the gym have actually permitted more youthful fighters to work along with a master, as well as interested onlookers to see. Teaching your staff members all facets of power device training as well as security could minimize the opportunities of injury and also maintain your workforce effective as well as risk-free. The fitness center consists of weights, cardiovascular tools, security balls, machines and also resistance bands. Mirrors on all walls do not simply mimic the look of many health clubs - they actually make the room look bigger. A new wave of thinking of power exposes that it is offered to us by others as opposed to got. There are few better exercises for targeting full-body power compared to the medicine-ball bang. Most of the gyms need their participants to abide by the laws to be able to go into and utilize the facilities. No, in spite of prominent notions and the common urban legends, Pfeffer competes that the path to power is substantially various than the prominent concepts we were raised to believe. If you see that you are obtaining squeezed in order to spend for your fitness center Sydney subscription then you are bound to pull out after a few days. It is just a partial settlement to know that the paradox also implies that political hopefuls such as Donald Trump - angry, manipulative harasses - are less likely to acquire power to start with. If you are presently not making use of any kind of sort of eco-friendly power and intend to conserve electricity, you could still decrease your costs by disconnecting unutilized home appliances. Greetings Diona", he claimed pleasantly, as he came level with her, making her once more so aware of his figure as he looked down upon her. After years of lack of exercise, Ashley returned as the Yellow Space Ranger to help the Galaxy Rangers battle the Psycho Rangers. Individuals who pledged to stroll were 3 times more likely to show up vs. those just saying they would stroll. From scenting too excellent to filling out a large dimension water bottle when there is a line of people behind you, read on to see if you're guilty of any one of these 16 health club pet dog peeves. The Gym stated the variety of inexpensive health clubs across the country had enhanced to 319 this year from 58 in 2011. That said, the plot brings me to my 2nd problem - one which maintains Absolute Power from being a 5-star book. The health club also contains 450 items of cardio workout tools as well as dumbbells and makers. Yes, you heard me. We're paying triple numbers a month and also struggling atop lunar looking equipment in order to replicate easy youth searches like jumping rope, hula hooping and also playing tag. After the Power Rangers involve her rescue, she goes back to being the principal of Reefside High and is disclosed to have actually been a close personal good friend of Anton Mercer. Raise takes us on an enlightening scenic tour through time, starting with the ancient Greeks, who made a cult of the body-- words gym derives from the Greek word for naked"-- as well as following Roman legions, middle ages knights, Persian pahlevans, as well as eighteenth-century German gymnasts.

TOPPING OFF A TELESCOPE WITH NEW TOOLS TO EXPLORE DARK ENERGY Key components for the sky-mapping Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), weighing about 12 tons, were hoisted atop the Mayall Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) near Tucson, Arizona, and bolted into place Wednesday, marking a major project milestone. DESI will create the largest 3-D map of the universe by gathering light from tens of millions of galaxies after its scheduled startup in late 2019. It is designed to provide more precise measurements of dark energy, which is accelerating the universe’s expansion and looms as one of the universe’s biggest mysteries. “Earlier this year we removed the old top-end of the Mayall Telescope, and Wednesday’s installation brings this telescope back to life with a new purpose,” said DESI Director Michael Levi of the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), which is leading the project’s international collaboration. “The more than 23,000 pounds of instrumentation that was installed represents the final top-end assembly.” The new top-end components include a 3.4-ton barrel-shaped, steel-framed structure, known as a corrector, that houses a precisely stacked array of large (the largest is 1.1 meters in diameter), delicate lenses. Also, the corrector is attached to a 1.1-ton six-axis “hexapod” that enables precise alignment adjustments; a surrounding ring, cage, and vanes support structure that weighs an additional 5.2 tons; and about 2 tons of other materials, including placeholder weights for DESI’s focal plane (see a related video), which is still under assembly and hasn’t yet arrived on site. A team at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory built the corrector, hexapod, and other top-end support structures. The structures are designed to align the lenses with an accuracy of tens of microns (millionths of a meter) -- similar to the width of the thinnest human hair. DESI involves more than 450 researchers from more than 70 institutions around the globe. KPNO is part of the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation. The corrector will enable a larger field of view -- covering an area more than 40 times larger than the telescope’s previous corrector, and more than 40 times the size of the full Moon as seen from Earth’s surface -- for a series of 5,000 robotically positioned fiber-optic cables that will gather light from sequences of targeted galaxies. This light will be analyzed to gather information about their distance and the rate at which the galaxies are moving away from us. Its large field of view will allow DESI to map one-third of the night sky during its planned 5-year survey. The corrector was then disassembled for transport and flown on a chartered transport plane from England to Tucson, Arizona. Then, it was trucked to the Kitt Peak summit, at an elevation of 6,800 feet. Once reassembled, the corrector was connected to its mechanical support system. Each of the corrector’s six lenses began as a large, thick piece of glass made by either Corning Glass in New York, Ohara Corp. in Japan, or Schott AG in Germany (see a related video). One of the lenses housed in the corrector is among the largest to ever be fielded on a telescope, noted Berkeley Lab’s David Schlegel, a DESI project scientist. The lenses traveled the world for polishings and coatings at several companies, and were installed and precisely aligned inside the corrector barrel in a basement at the University College London last spring. In June, a 250-foot mobile crane was used to lift the old top-end off of the telescope and out of the dome. A 50-ton crane in the dome of the Mayall Telescope was used to lift all the DESI top-end components up to the dome floor from the ground level, where they were assembled. The same dome crane was then used to lift the assembled DESI top-end into position atop the telescope. David Sprayberry, the KPNO site director for DESI, said, “This was a complex lift that went without a hitch. We had a dozen of our technical personnel ensuring that the new top-end would be positioned exactly onto the center of the telescope. I’m very proud of my team for pulling this off flawlessly.” Early next year, researchers will mount a set of cameras and other instruments onto DESI’s focal plane to test how the lenses perform across the entire imaging field. This commissioning camera array was built at Ohio State University. “This will be a real test to determine if all the lenses are working together perfectly,” said Paul Martini, a professor at Ohio State University who oversaw the development of the commissioning camera. Then, other DESI systems will be tested over the next several months until the entire instrument is ready to begin its sky survey.
