There were no injuries.Įven with that setback, according to Falco the Lumen project is on schedule and on budget. The $135 million construction project had a hiccup in October 2018 when several steel beams dropped from the crane and damaged an adjoining parking garage. Playhouse Square also nicknamed the crane Ichabod the Crane and started a Twitter account for Ichabod.Ĭleveland looks great from up here! Check out for a live webcam of me! /hgsYPywA9A Since then, Playhouse Square has sought ways to get the community excited about and interacting with the construction project, including a live webcam with a bird's-eye view of the construction maintained by Gilbane Building Company, the contractor for the Lumen project. The 34-story building, which is owned by the Playhouse Square Foundation, broke ground in April 2018. “The Lumen is going to be a building that everyone is going to see, whether you’re coming in from the south or you’re coming in from the east, from the west, so everyone will know where Playhouse Square is just by seeing the Lumen,” Falco said. įalco called the temporary road closures the “price of progress.” The Euclid Avenue stretch from East 14th to East 17th streets will be closed through Saturday.

For theater-goers, drop-off and valet will also be available in front of the Connor Palace, but drivers will have to come in from Chester Avenue to East 17 th to Euclid Avenue. Sidewalks on Euclid Avenue and the crosswalk at East 14 th will remain open. It will take a few days for construction crews to disassemble the crane completely, so Euclid Avenue between East 18 th and East 14 th streets is scheduled to be closed through Saturday, but inclement weather could delay that process. Weather permitting, the crane should be completely down by the end of the weekend. “Most of the work from this point on will be completing the apartment units.” “The project is now completely enclosed with glass,” Falco said. The crane towering over the Euclid Avenue construction site of the Lumen building in Playhouse Square comes down this week.ĭismantling the crane means the exterior of the 400-foot tall high-rise apartment is almost complete, said Art Falco, Playhouse Square’s senior advisor for special projects.

The newest ground-up multifamily residential addition to the Cleveland skyline is City Club Apartments Cleveland. With 22 floorplans to choose from spread across 23 floors, this building is promising to do the most. Just take a look at the brochure on the building's website (for some reason I can't link the PDF). The developers are definitely pushing the market when it comes to both pricing and amenities. Of the 304 units, the cheapest that are currently being pre-leased are garage-facing studios hovering just under $1500. One bedroom units land a little under $2000 with most going around $2300.
Living downtown and seeing this building going up has been both exciting and somewhat intriguing. The unique exterior structure and design as well as the seemingly jam-packed amenity offerings lead me to question the developers' hope of truly shoving (as opposed to pushing) the market. The renderings of the exterior rooftop seem a bit noisy, but renderings are always a bit more vibrant than the finished product.
The seemingly random outcropping design (of "bay" windows and random edifice balconies) makes me curious about design efficiencies, but does add a unique aesthetic to an otherwise plain face.
Construction is well underway and a topping-out ceremony was held in June '23 with an anticipated lease-up initiating Q4 of this year.
While not quite as tall as its nearest competitors (The Lumen and The Beacon), City Club Apartments is banking on its abundant resident offerings to lure tenants back into the Cleveland urban core.

Sunday Morning Playtests for Saturday Morning Mysteries
Tumblr media
So got to try out the new player-facing rules for Saturday Morning Mysteries for the first time since I overhauled them in November, and while I may still screw around with dice mechanics (right now, they're a mashup of ItO and Troika and I might make them closer to Down We Go), I'm pretty happy with how they're working.
The previous version used something like Lumen across the board, and I tried to use playbooks and asymmetrical stats, but floundered. Hanna-Barbera may have had some clear archetypes in its mystery-format shows, those don't gamify clearly or well without stretching.
So instead, I swapped in a "feat" system that captured some of what people might want to do to get the vibe or aesthetic of the archetypes, created three core stats, and replaced ItO's Hit Protection with Escape Points. It's worked well as we've gone through a Darkly Mature Scooby-Dooish take on Goblin Archives' The Mall.
EXCEPT, I also added asymmetry.
Tumblr media
While meddling-kids-style PCs use those rules with Troika-style 2d6 rolls (high for a contest, equal or under for a save), the Curious Cats and Prying Pups (Thanks to playtester Dylan for that) of the adventuring crew use Lasers & Feelings-style dice pools, rolling with Lumen/24XX-style probabilities.
As noted, I'm contemplating doing a couple of other small shifts before we leave the Mall and head to Logan Dean's Demon-Fucked Cleveland, but I'm loving the way the two sets of rules work together.
So the next area that really needs my attention is GM procedures and the sample adventures (including Count Dracutron's Haunted Pizza Parlor).
Thanks to Bill Roundy for the cover and interior art (that's the final cover art, but the cover design is just a mock-up).

Critical Reading Resources & How-Tos
Time for a post that compiles links to sites that teach people to read critically/skeptically. Truly fitting, you should also read these skeptically.
People (including me!) tend to just say "read critically" or "read skeptically" without talking about how to do that, so I hope these resources aid you in that regard!
Using science to better understand magic is something that's been a thing since the bygone days where the two were inseparable. So with that in mind, get ready to read a lot of articles about psychology!

Creating Community through the Arts
Gina Vernaci had spent nearly four decades as a theater manager and administrator and was in the middle of a highly successful tenure at Cleveland’s Playhouse Square when a lunchtime walk changed her educational and professional path.
“I walked by Cleveland State’s Levin College of Urban Affairs building, which is a block away from my office at Playhouse Square, and found myself wondering what urban affairs meant,” she says. “I walked in to find out and realized how important the field was to the work I did every day in building a broader arts community for the region. Shortly thereafter, I applied to the Master’s in Urban Studies program.”
Vernaci would ultimately graduate from CSU with her Master’s Degree in 2003 and credits the education and training she received as a key factor in her continued career advancement, which culminated in July of 2019 with her appointment as President and Chief Executive Officer of Playhouse Square. In that role, she manages all business and operational aspects for the largest performing arts center in America outside of New York. This includes overseeing community development projects, education initiatives and the presentation of over 1,000 events annually that draw in more than 1 million visitors from across the region and beyond.
“Knowing how cities work and how people operate within them has been pivotal to being a good leader for this organization which, in addition to presenting performances, is actively involved in downtown development,” Vernaci adds. “I use my CSU degree literally every day.”
Vernaci first joined Playhouse Square in 1984 and has watched the organization and the neighborhood it calls home transform before her eyes. Over the years she has served as program manager, director of programming, vice president, senior VP, executive producer and president and COO. In those positions she has managed nearly every aspect of operations and played a leading role in organizational partnerships and programming development that have made Playhouse Square one of the top arts institutions in the country.
“When I started, the organization was still in its infancy and I did not have a title or a permanent position,” Vernaci notes with a smile. “But I fell in love immediately with the mission and decided I was going to do everything I could to help make Playhouse Square what we all dreamed it could be, a cultural and artistic hub for our city.”
Along the way, Vernaci has partnered multiple times with her alma mater to enhance Playhouse Square’s goals and Cleveland State’s educational mission. This includes helping to activate a collaboration with CSU and Cleveland Play House, which sought to renovate the Allen Theatre and move CSU’s theater, dance and arts programs to Playhouse Square. The restored facility opened in 2011 and now serves as the home for CSU theatrical and dance productions, offering an amazing real-world experience for students and a more direct pipeline to talented theater professionals for Playhouse Square and its partners.
“Cleveland State has been a major leader in the broader effort to enhance investment and development in Downtown Cleveland and the Campus District, for the benefit of the entire region,” she adds. “We could not ask for a better partner.”
Moving forward Vernaci will seek to enhance and expand the many activities happening throughout Playhouse Square and beyond, including summer programming on U.S. Bank Plaza, the Disney Musicals in Schools program, the KeyBank Broadway Series and the Tri-C Jazz Festival, among many others. She will also work with Playhouse Square’s resident organizations, including Cleveland Play House, Great Lakes Theater, DANCECleveland, the Cleveland Ballet and Cleveland State, to further improve the variety and volume of cultural activities being presented. In addition, she will welcome The Lumen to the district, a 34-story apartment tower currently rising above Euclid Avenue, which will add 318 apartments to downtown Cleveland.
“Playhouse Square is a vibrant and powerful downtown district and cultural center and I am very proud and honored to be able to lead its continued growth,” she adds.

The Most Popular Beer at Every NFL Stadium, According to the Untappd App
Tumblr media
Last week marked the start of the 2021 NFL season, and with fans returning to watch the games in person, that also means tailgating and stadium brews are back on the table. Yet some beers tend to be more popular than others on game days.
In a recent article, USA Today Sports’ The List Wire shared the most popular beers at every NFL stadium. To compile the ranking, The List Wire partnered with the drinking app Untappd, and based the results on the “most checked-in” beer at each location since the 2019 season.
Though the methodology isn’t completely comprehensive, the results paint an interesting picture of varying style preferences, and showcase a range of brands from regional to national.
At MetLife Stadium, home of the New York Giants and Jets, Bud Light was the beer of choice. The nation’s best-selling beer also came out on top at the Miami Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium.
Fans watching the Eagles play at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Stadium opted for Sly Fox Brewing’s Vulpulin, a locally brewed IPA. New England Patriots fans also favored something closer to home: Massachusetts’s own Julius IPA from Tree House Brewing Company. (Sorry, Sam Adams.)
Read on for the most popular beer at each NFL stadium.

Bitcoin Accepted as Payment at Major U.S. Science Museum/ bitcoin exchange, bitcoin margin trading, bitseven, bitcoin exchange,Cryptocurrency exchange
Bitseven.com - A major museum in the U.S. state of Ohio is the latest place to accept payment in Bitcoin, partly as a way to encourage adoption and turn Cleveland into a crypto- and blockchain hub.
Science and technology continue to evolve and to a large extent, dictate how we run our lives through the conveniences and necessities that they offer. Disruptive technology like blockchain and cryptocurrencies are doing the same, providing a more efficient and streamlined approach to finances and data management.
In an example of how these two worlds are merging, the U.S. state of Ohio’s Great Lakes Science Center has announced that they will now be accepting Bitcoin as payment. According to Crain’s Cleveland Business, the museum and educational center will make use of BitPay to process these transactions from the 13th of November.
Cleveland to Host Upcoming Blockchain Event
The move comes just in time for the Blockland Solutions Conference, which will also be held in Cleveland. The event will be a way to showcase the benefits of blockchain which will be done through presentations and case studies. It is being organized by Bernie Moreno, a successful car dealership owner, and entrepreneur. His goal is to turn the city into a blockchain hub partly through the creation of a $150 million incubator.
The conference has attracted the attention and support of many big names in the disruptive industry. According to the event’s website, the impressive list of speakers includes IBM’s Vice President of Blockchain Technology, Jerry Cuomo; the founder of ConsenSys, Joseph Lubin and industry pioneer, Nick Szabo.
Suffice it to say, the conference is poised to attract quite a few industry enthusiasts and even potential investors. Great Lakes Science Center wants to be a part of pushing Cleveland to become a blockchain hotspot and part of this is accepting crypto payments. The center’s CEO, Kirsten Ellenbogen, explained:
There is a lot of excitement around the conference. Accepting bitcoin is just a small part of the momentum to grow a blockchain ecosystem in Cleveland.
Bitcoin Acceptance Continue to Grow
However, the center’s acceptance of virtual currencies is also a testament to their own growth and desire to be on the cutting edge of this digital revolution. Ellenbogen added:
Last year we launched our mobile app that uses augmented and virtual reality to allow guests to experiment with flames in space and test spacecraft designs re-entering Earth’s atmosphere when they visit the NASA Glenn Visitor Center, and now they’ll be able to use their phone to pay for their admission using Bitcoin.
Great Lakes Science Center joins a growing list of establishments that are accepting cryptocurrencies as payment. Live Bitcoin News recently reported that Skoda Minotti, a U.S.-based business advisory firm, is also now accepting crypto payments. Acceptance is growing in the rest of the world as well with a French-based university accepting tuition in Bitcoin and a London brewery taking crypto payments.

The Best Economic Lighting For Your Cleveland Home
New Post has been published on http://www.ohenergyratings.com/blog/2018/10/23/economic-lighting-cleveland-home/
The Best Economic Lighting For Your Cleveland Home
Don’t understand how color temperature and lumens affect your home’s lighting? Don’t worry — we’ll show you what’s watt and how it can save you money.
How can I lower my electric bill with more efficient lighting?
There’s more to do than switching lights off to lower your electric bill and save on lighting costs. The average household spends about 5% of energy costs on lighting; that’s over 500kWh for energy consumers in Cleveland, Ohio. To cut your energy bill, you want to find the best lighting option for your home, which may mean switching to a different kind of lightbulb.
What are my lighting options for cheap electricity in Cleveland?
Incandescent: these traditional lightbulbs lacked efficiency and are no longer produced. A whopping 95% of energy with this bulb was given off as heat rather than light. That means even with a cheap electric rate, the product wasted money.
Halogen: the updated version of traditional incandescent, these bulbs hold gas around the light filament to increase efficiency. The bulbs meet federal energy efficiency standards, but aren’t setting any records for Ohio green energy.
CFLs: compact fluorescent lamps are the same as the long tubes you see in warehouses and basements, but in a curly lightbulb form. Though more expensive, they use about a fourth of the energy and last ten times as long as incandescent bulbs. With the energy savings, these bulbs pay for themselves in about nine months.
LEDs: light emitting diodes are used in a variety of ways including replacing traditional lightbulbs. They use about 25% of the energy of halogen bulbs and could last 25 times longer! They are more expensive but save money long-term with efficiency and longevity.
What else do I need to know about lighting options?
Before you switch to a new energy-saving bulb, learn about light color and temperature so you can choose the best electric components for your Cleveland home.
Measured in Kelvin units, temperature indicates light color on a spectrum from yellow to blue, yellow being the lowest temperature and blue the highest. Lightbulbs are marked with color and temperature to help you shop and compare: 2200 Kelvin-3000K is soft white; 3500K-4100K is cool white; and 5000K-6500K is daylight.
Incandescent bulbs are always soft white, but energy efficient bulbs are available in a range for different applications. Soft white is traditional, cozy, and good for bedrooms or living rooms. Cool white is great for kitchens and bathrooms. Daylight is ideal for bathrooms and illuminating details in a workshop, craft room, or reading light.
Take note that although light appears brighter with higher light temperatures, the lumens, or the amount of light produced, is actually the same.
What are other ways to save on my electric bill?
After you determine the best lighting option for you home, you can increase your energy savings even more with light timers and sensors to make sure lights are off when not in use.
If you’re ready to go beyond lighting in the search for cheap electricity, you’ll find more money-saving opportunities at Ohio Energy Ratings. Searching for Oil … and a Sazerac
Lukewarm apology: the headline is clickbait. This post is all about the whiskey, not the oil.
In my quest for the perfect Sazerac (as reported here and here) I’ve concluded that perfection is on the palate of the beholder. From this moment on I will refrain from declaring whether a particular offering is good, bad or indifferent. I’m a guidepost, not your conscience. Quid pro quo: Don’t tell me which King I should prefer: Albert, Freddie or BB.
Warning signs you’re gonna get a bad Sazerac
“Tell me what’s in it and I’ll make it for you.”
“Let me see if we have the … [peychaud bitters] … [absinthe]
(Scrunched face) “Sure”. (Furtive look toward the bar …)
The Road Goes on Forever …
… and the party never ends, says Robert Earl Keen. But mine did, at …
The Peabody Hotel.  Stayed there in Memphis when visiting scholar/athlete son at college. The wife and I love the hotel, even the duck march (once).  But – as I stab my beloved friend in the back – one of the most “memorable”. Don’t EVER accept one with ice – “too watery” doesn’t even begin to describe the horribleness.  Must have been a mistake by a rookie barkeep. Is this what it’s like to be tortured by Barry Manilow?
Ousie’s Table, Houston.  Citrusy, beachy, like Jimmy Buffet.  That’s because they use whiskey sour mix.  Redemption is good enough rye, but how can you tell when it’s buried? This might be a nice cocktail but it’s not a Sazerac.
Greenhouse Tavern. Generally, the farther from the Big Easy the less likely that the barkeep even knows what a Sazerac is, much less how to make one. In, of all places, Cleveland I found this fellow who only knew what it was but, with a flourish, asked for my favorite rye (I chose Bulleit). Heavy on the rye and light on simple syrup. Bitters and absinthe are right there but not in your face. It’s what you would expect from an establishment that offers “crunchy pig ears”.
My house. Not a public establishment, but the place where I live with my wife and our dog. Inconsistent. These things are hard to make well. I do know this: Absinthe has more punch that Pernod or Herbsaint.
Wondering about the Flood?  Ask Noah … How to squander an election you can’t lose? Seek you-know-who  … The Sazerac?  Go to the Big Easy, where you have …
Ralph’s on the Park. (where once stood General P.G.T Beauregard in marble) The bartender apologized for using Old Overholt.  No need to; it was fine for me.
Mr. B’s Bistro. They use Sazerac Rye. For an extra fifty cents you get Bulleit, which is a little bigger. Their Sazerac was more aromatic than most.
Except …
The Carousel in the Monteleone. Again, great hotel … lively bar, at 11 in the morning, 3 in the morning or any time in between. But they used some sort of cheap whiskey. No idea what it was. No ingredient mattered after that.
The Sazerac was invented in 1859 in New Orleans in an eponymous coffeehouse, where Cognac was the base spirit. We tried the Lumen in Dallas, who offers the original. Had to have two to compare. Cognac is silkier, Memphis-like. Rye has that whiskey bite that you need.
And one more musical interlude to celebrate our journey.
