#i think this might be a coffee day for me#coffee or melissa. not sure#the book is 50 this year#the movie 36 this week (or so)#and i'm almost ready to wrap up the conference season#last week i: took care of a group of 60 people (in one bus) and managed feeding over 90. slept not much (which is not an achievement per se#but still important in context of all the daily stuff and evening parties#dealt with 2 annoying people (incl. 1 sexist) and we all made it#came up with an idea of solving (at least locally and on a small scale) an issue of gender inequality and how to deal with harassment#bc maybe students will be able to distribute it further#spent the week managing organising and saved one speaker's flight (and several people's commute)#deejayed (indirectly) and danced and sang. and touched a guitar after a year-long break. i missed playing it so much!#made several new connections and possibly friends#hm. and stopped two adult men from brawling (which was possible) and avoided additional fees. and saw off a group after 3h of sleep#saw a hare and a fox#walked and climbed and almost run#made mistakes and fixed them?#and managed with all these feelings of being overwhelmed#oh. and i muttered the few French words i still know#and while my anxiety is currently high (wow. it hadn't been for so long? or was i just numb?) and I'm tired#i kind of see the light and feel much more capable of dealing with shit#even though currently I'm panicking bc anxiety#but hey. i just need to buy a ticket for tomorrow's flight and I'm off#and it's like the smallest thing of it all#mighty me#now let's tackle the talk and deal with the day#...after i'll be a bit more alive than just slightly#okay organizing a seminar won't solve the issue but it could help at least a bit#and we need to do sth to make it better#caring too much.jpg

putting my prediction on record now that the coming decade is going to see the rise of viral-marketed fancy at-home water filtration systems, driving and driven by a drastic reduction in the quality of U.S. tap water (given that we are in a 'replacement era' where our current infrastructure is reaching the end of its lifespan--but isn't being replaced). also guessing that by the 2030s access to drinkable tap water will be a mainstream class issue, with low-income & unstably housed people increasingly forced to rely on expensive bottled water when they can't afford the up-front cost of at-home filtration--and with this being portrayed in media as a "moral failing" and short-sighted "choice," rather than a basic failure of our political & economic systems. really hope i'm just being alarmist, but plenty of this already happens in other countries, and the U.S. is in a state of decline, so. here's praying this post ages into irrelevance. timestamped April 2023
#apollo don't fucking touch this one#serious post#not a shitpost#hope i forget about this post and have no reason to ever look back on it one day#fyi i'm aware that access to potable water is already a major issue in parts of the U.S. yes i know flint michigan exists#i'm saying that this issue is going to GROW unless local & federal governments work together to fix it.#so it's a matter of if we trust them to fix it. And well--do you?#what are the chances the government just denies there's a problem until the water actually turns brown#at which point it's already been common knowledge for years and people have just become resigned and that's our new normal#i'm mean come on. how many of us already believe that we're being exposed to dangerous pollutants we don't know about and can't avoid#like that's pretty much just part of being a modern consumer. accepting that companies will happily endanger your life for a few pennies#and the most you'll get is like a $50 gift card as part of a class action rebate 20 years down the line#probably the history books will look back on Flint as a warning and a harbinger that went ignored#luxury condos will advertise their built-in top-of-the-line filtration systems--live here and you can drink water straight from your tap!#watch the elite professional class putting $700 dyson water filtration systems on their wedding registry#while the rest of us figure out how to fit water delivery into our grocery budget while putting 90% of our paycheck towards rent#also eggs are $15

The day before yesterday I was looking at statistics about reading habits in different countries (average book count per year, age, most read genre, etc) and then yesterday i came across a poll here asking how many books youve read so far this year and now im wondering:
The highest I saw (not just in that poll's tags but on other socials as well) was 365! With the person in question being a lil under 300 rn.
The lowest (and no shame here! I myself have picked up reading again after a long time and it's quite the challenge) was 1! But I also saw lots of people aim for 5.
The average seems to be anywhere around 30 to 60!
And the second most common bracket (interesting that it's also the one made up of mostly late teens and early 20yos) is 10-30!
Idk if anyone will read this but if u do, id love to know more about your thought process in the tags!
(Just pls be kind to each other and no fucked up elitism lol)

listen its not that tamlin locking feyre in a manor is ‘not a big deal’. its that sjm parallels tamlin and rhysand way too much for rhysand to be a viable, healthy option for feyre.
rhys put a whole city under a lockdown so severe people forgot about its existence (and from what the wiki says, the city was kept hidden for centuries even before, for the safety of its citizens) but tamlin locking feyre in a manor, so she wouldn’t follow him into an unsafe situation was crossing a line?

new wip wednesday
i wanted to get the first chapter of this done as an early bday present to me because ive been talking about this fic for foreverrrrr but its not gonna happen because im bad at measuring time and effort 😮‍💨 but look! hunger games au fic!
Anakin pushes his face into his neck, letting his lips press against his pulse for a moment.
“Anakin,” Obi-Wan murmurs, recognition and warning rolled into one tone.
But Anakin wouldn’t be who he is if he allowed the man in his arms to so easily twist away. He wouldn’t even be here now, pressed up against him with the scent of saltwater and lilacs and leather filling his nose, if he let one warning word distract him from his goal.
So instead he pushes further, wraps his hands around Obi-Wan’s hips and takes the skin beneath his lips between his teeth. The soft fabric of their pants brush together, so loud in the stillness of the kitchen that it’s deafening—that it’s almost loud enough to drown out the catch in Obi-Wan’s breathing.
But Anakin has trained himself over the past five years to listen for all the small ways that Obi-Wan Kenobi capitulates, so he hears his sigh, feels the slump of his shoulders against his own as his head sways forward and then back.
Anakin takes his time worrying a bitemark into his neck, just at the edge of his beard. On the holos that will film Obi-Wan’s face today, it’ll look like a shadow.
But Anakin will know. Obi-Wan will know.
“Anakin,” his lover murmurs, and Anakin’s hand moves from his waist up to stroke down his arm, corded with tense muscle. Fisherman’s muscle. Victor’s muscle too.
Not today, he means. It’s obvious in every line of his body. It’s obvious in the fact that he left the bed so early in the morning when neither of them must work. It’s obvious in the distance in his eyes, the frown across his lips.
Today is not a day where Obi-Wan will accept pleasure from anyone’s lips or hands, undeserving as he feels to be on the receiving end of such a kindness.
Anakin’s left hand falls to cover Obi-Wan’s, tangling their fingers together. His are rougher than Obi-Wan’s, working man’s hands now that he is twenty-one and a man of the sea like most are on Stewjon. The rough drag of his calluses over the hairy knuckles of Obi-Wan’s hand makes Anakin swallow a smile. Victors of the Hunger Games are forbidden from working laborious jobs. They’re meant to languish away in their Coruscanti-funded manors, with idle minds and idle hands, picking at paints or design stencils or any number of different government approved hobbies
Obi-Wan Kenobi is not made to be idle. He has no patience for painting or sewing, for cooking or jewelry design. Luckily for him, Stewjon is the fourth planet from Coruscant, on the edge of the inner rim, and it’s rather small, rather ordinary. In the colder months, during the few months of the star year where the galaxy is not forced to care about the Hunger Games and its Victors, he can slip away to the ocean. Fish and sail like he was born to do, Stewjoni through and through.
But Anakin is out on those choppy seas year-round now that he’s four years finished with his compulsory education. His hands are rougher than Obi-Wan’s and they always will be.
Anakin likes it. Likes the way Obi-Wan’s softness contrasts against his own rougher places. Likes that he can sneak away from Obi-Wan’s manor in the blue of the pre-dawn light, first to the sea and then to the market, and Obi-Wan will be there when he gets back. Likes that when he leaves, his lover is curled up asleep in their bed. And when he returns with the fattest fish from his haul, Anakin can cook it for him too.
He likes that he is the only thing Obi-Wan needs. He provides. He cooks for him. He feeds him. He touches him with his rough hands, to dirty him and then to clean him up. Everything that Obi-Wan needs, Anakin is the person to give it to him.
He supposes he has Coruscant to thank for that.
He’s not stupid enough to say that—ever, but especially today. Especially on the day of the Reaping.

↳ make me choose: book lovers or normal people (asked by @amycurtismarchs)
“that’s life. you’re always making decisions, taking paths that lead you away from the rest before you can see where they end. maybe that’s why we as a species love stories so much. all those chances for do-overs, opportunities to live the lives we’ll never have.”
want one? ♡

I still miss the era before prequels when the clans were implied (or at least you could imagine them) to be ancient before later books all but confirmed the clans are only around like...less then a century old??
imagine if the dotc cast was having run-ins with ye olden english peasants or something and dodging around horse drawn carts. a different world could have been a fun change of pace. or at least potentially really funny. but nooo we just HAVE to have cars around, how else will we quickly fridge unneeded love interests

Following That Poll... the amount of snide jeering directed at folks who read 0-5 books a year is just... disturbing.
Anyway, to all of you who struggle to concentrate and can't finish a single book due to ADHD/other things/life, to everyone who is dyslexic or has vision/focus problems that make it a genuine unenjoyable struggle to fight through books, to those who find audiobooks incredibly difficult to understand at any speed despite that being the only accessible format for you..... to everyone else who clicked that button for whatever reason........ ignore literally everyone who acts like the amount of books you have read determines your worth.
There is no inherent superiority to print books over any other form of media. If you prefer to interact with storytelling as it is found in films, tv, fanfic, comics or games, you're not hurting anyone. Live your best life, and keep on doing your thing.
