They have gastro intestinal chronic illness of Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, etc. They have a neurological chronic illness of epilepsy. They were diagnosed as a child, preteen, and or teenager. Was hospitalized, diagnosed, and treated when it first happened. Took magical fantasy medication to treat conditions. Based on magical versions of our western and eastern medicine. When they died they were buried in a metal coffin to be shot out into space after a military funeral as a former super soldier.

One of their alien spouses and partners who can fly using solar radiation picks up the coffin after using a star fighter. She flies out to the star system (of her home giant planet) that has a few suns, several moons orbiting each planet, & many planets orbiting the suns. She puts the spacecraft on autopilot and sets a flight path around the orbits of the stars, moons, & planets. She puts them inside a power armor with a jetpack. She proceeds to take them out of the coffin and opens up the cargo bay. She then has them absorb solar radiation, lunar rays, & cosmic energy from her star system to revive him/her/them by inputting the orbit to the ai of their personal power armor suit.

After absorbing all these rays, energy, & radiation they are revived but also dangerously supercharged from all the excess energy and radiation. Like a few hundred percent more than normal as a demigod and alien hybrid. They were like a mini star about to go supernova. Their hair, eyes, skin, hands, feet, & mouth were blazing with energy. Optic blasts from their eyes, breath blasts from their mouth, & energy blasts from their hands were radiating with power. The power armor suit was able to absorb some of the excess energy to overcharge the defense and offense abilities of the suit but not enough to absorb all of the excess energy. Thinking that an enemy force comes to fight them, seeing them, their alien spouse and partner, & knowing some parts of their alien hybrid ancestry as a result of being an enemy of their alien hybrid mothers people. And the revived demigod and alien hybrid proceeds to fight them to burn the rest of this energy.

Died from stopping a large meteorite from destroying a space frigate. Kanaloa Hawaiian God of the Underworld in some more modern reimaginings. He is a student of Milu. He revived him/her/them. He/she/they met him in a metaphysical trial since he is a god of the underworld. It was a trial of reflection since he asked him/her/them to be introspective in this trial.

Died fighting for the rebel army against them once they were freed by allies that the ship cruiser frigate corvette or battle cruiser they were on was shot by plasma or laser batteries or cannons that shot them out into space and they died from lack of oxygen. The power armor suit was locked by the AI and it wasn’t permanent death but it does count as they were clinically dead for several minutes. A dream-like trial occurs in the afterlife before they come back to life. Haumea, the Hawaiian goddess of birth, talks to them in the afterlife to help their rebirth.

They were killed by a behemoth created by adamantine, mithril, divine iron, heavenly bronze, stellar titanium, & celestial steel and other magical metals. A monster made sentient by arcane and esoteric aether and nether. It was created by demigods, deities, & titans. It was commanded by enemy gods and goddesses. The being was sent to destroy a county by enemy gods and goddesses upon hearing their demigod existence. It was sent by the Norse as a rival pantheon. It was sent as a result of Odin, old king of the Norse gods, learning the relationship between the Asian Pasifika and Afro Latine Native demigod and alien hybrid and their Norse demigod partners. The partners being Aesir Ylva Helga Olafsdottir (Asgardian and Vanir hybrid demigod child of Skadi) and Josefine Yrsa Hansen (Norse demigod child of Freya). He/she/they sacrificed themselves by overloading their alien hybrid and demigod powers to destroy the monster to save a county in a colony of indigenous and citizens of color that were targeted when it was sent to find him/her/them.

They were revived by being placed in a healing vat or regeneration tank full of blue, purple, & green liquids that healed them as an alien hybrid. The healing vat also had nanites that repaired, upgraded, & customized their cybernetic and bionic implants and enhancements.

They were slain by a spear with a blade made by the strongest metals in the omniverse that cut through the chest of their power armor. The power armor’s weak point was exposed by an explosive javelin coated with unknown substances that pierced the back of their power armor. The javelin was thrown from across the battlefield. After it pierced their armor it exploded. It was created by remnants of the earth government and Terran dominion regime. It was wielded by a leader of the Forces of Evil.

When they were brought back to life, because of how they died, what happened to them when they were alive, what happened to them in the afterlife, & how they were brought back to life.

Their mind was possessed, their heart was corrupted, their mana was contaminated, their soul was tainted, & their body was decayed. They had to be purified and healed by nanites, medicine, healers, potions, and magic when they were resurrected by talismans, charms, & amulets.

Injuries, mental conditions, and other maladies, consolidated - actually I'm just combining this into one big post because guess who forgot stuff last time.

Crane is deaf in both ears due to physical abuse, although not completely. Does not know ASL due to prejudice, but has the capacity to read lips to a degree.

Hemophilia-B.

Walks with a limp [left side] from a past hip injury that ended up almost separating his leg from his body. Said hip has also been partially replaced with titanium. +shot in the left knee 2019 IRP, remnants of kneecap later calcified. Partially wheelchair bound due to walking difficulties.

Severe throat and vocal fold scarring, thanks Eduardo Flamingo for trying to eat him and also various and mostly female rapists at Arkham. Can't speak that clearly, often slurring his words. Prefers to express himself in short sentences or simply grunts, unless you really get him going on a topic.

Speaking of my cyborg man: his lower jaw is pretty much entirely titanium mesh, his spinal cord barring the nerve sheath has been entirely replaced with metal due to a car accident in his 20's, his ribcage is now reinforced, and at least two of his heart valves have been replaced entirely. + stents

In addition his spine is barely covered with skin + muscle and you can see the metal when he twists at certain angles.

Now missing roughly half his brain tissue due to literally dying in childbirth in the 1980's. This causes Crane to suffer from complications including but not limited to: seizures, CSF leakage, narcolepsy, short-term memory issues, and increased mood swings to the point of being extremely volatile.

Marfanoid, so more often than not will dislocate his joints several times a day. Can’t lift anything heavy, the usual. Not as flexible as he used to be due to the metal in his body.

Now possesses a singular lung due to a run-in with Doomsday during his time on the Suicide Squad, which also demanded the floating rib reinforcement.

Parkinson’s Disease, the early stages.

Severe photophobia, almost always has one eye shut at all times.

Self-harm scarring across shoulders and one wrist. Various scars as a general, both internal and external. His genitalia are recognizable but still somewhat mangled. Overall? Torture victim! Many of his nerve endings have been outright removed because the United States sure as hell doesn't treat its minority prisoners like humans...and neither did Crane's own family.

Truly, it's hard to gauge the full extent of his mental illnesses, as often doctors in Gotham City will revoke/revise diagnoses to fit an agenda [and god knows he lies to himself], but here's what can concretely be determined of his mental state:

Postpartum depression escalating into Complex Bereavement Disorder.

As with canon Scarecrow, unspecified psychosis. But in his case, they're likely a part of the Borderline Personality Disorder.

More than likely DID, emphasis on the Dissociative part of Dissociative Identity Disorder.

Inferiority complex with added anxiety.

Honestly I'd be willing to diagnose him with C-PTSD were it not just a normal thing for Asian-Americans [can confirm, am Asian-American]. Overall? He's almost 70, he's barely functioning. Don't expect a whole lot but witty quips from him.

NEON DARK: Yoruichi’s Cyberpunk 2077 AU

The Fourth Corporate War of the early 2020s ruined everything. To many—certainly to its enemies—there was one entity to blame above all others: the Arasaka Corporation. Although Arasaka was defeated in that conflict and returned its attention to Japan in the years which followed, that renewed focus only further antagonized its traditional Japanese rivals such as Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, and Toyota, all of which redoubled their investment in the Far Asian Co-prosperity Sphere (FACS Group). Things would quickly come to a head with Arasaka’s attempt to launch a coup d’etat against the Japanese government itself.

Although that effort failed, it had profound ramifications upon the Japanese political climate; among other things, the Japanese Self-Defense Forces were reorganized into a conventional military to further normalize Japan’s posture beyond what the repeal of Article 9 in the 1990s had achieved. The main supplier of the Japanese armed forces would, of course, be FACS. While Arasaka’s public image would gradually be domestically rehabilitated, both FACS and the Japanese military would remain highly suspicious of Arasaka and its intentions, and knew they would need allies to keep it in check. They soon decided they could find them in Arasaka’s other diehard enemies: Militech International Armaments and the armed forces of the New United States of America (NUSA).

While no friend of Japan, Militech’s hatred of Arasaka was more than enough to smooth over any other problems or considerations. Throughout the 2050s and 2060s, Japanese-American military-to-military relations would quietly grow, as would FACS-Militech joint technical ventures. These were, of course, completely secret. One of the most consequential would be a program that was partially carried out under the aegis of Militech’s Special Projects Department...

The idea was simple: while military-grade full-body conversion cyborgs (fullborgs) such as the IEC Dragoon were immensely powerful, they were also quite frankly stupid and predictable. The control mechanisms necessary to prevent cyberpsychosis rendered them little better than drones and they lacked any kind of battlefield initiative or individual autonomy. It was judged that going forward, it was worth sacrificing a little firepower and durability for the virtuoso adaptability of a proper soldier. The trouble which confronted the research group was: how to go about that?

The solution came from a fusion of product ideas from before the Fourth Corporate War, specifically the Raven Microcybnernetics (R.M.C.) Gemini human-like full-body conversion, and Militech’s own Eclipse black ops full-body conversion. It was determined that if the appearance of a fullborg could be made indistinguishable from a human, and more importantly the experience of being a fullborg could be made largely indistinguishable from being fully human, then cyberpsychosis could essentially be eliminated as a consideration, functionally yielding a ‘human’ soldier with massively enhanced abilities and only the typical problems of loyalty, training, morale, and so on��very simple things to solve. As the form factor of the solution precluded an excessive focus on sheer bulk and industrial-strength power, it naturally leant itself more to speed and stealth instead.

FACS and Militech fabricated several example models along the lines of the Gemini while incorporating features from the Eclipse. The final testbed, completed in 2072, was a third-generation human-passing full body conversion unit codenamed Raiden, and proved markedly superior to both its inspirations in physical power, durability, armor, reflexes, and stealth.

The Raiden includes limited military-grade cyberoptics (teleoptics, image enhancement, low-lite, antidazzle), cyberaudio (amplified hearing, level dampener, passive radar detector, passive sonar detector), olfactory sniffer sensors, and a radiation detector, all in a package which was superficially indistinguishable from a human to all but the most powerful sensors. These enhanced senses were engineered to interface with the human brain in an intuitive, unobtrusive fashion—they would blend relatively seamlessly into existing sensoria or register as premonitions, intuitions, or gut-feelings as appropriate, minimizing if not eliminating any dysphoria and thus dramatically reducing the risk of cyberpsychosis. For the same reasons, the unit was equipped with a Sandevistan-style system of boosterware rather than a Kerenzikov-style set, as well as an on-command Pain Editor, as it was determined that putting control of non-standard systems squarely in the user’s hands would make them less obtrusive.

The Raiden’s outer sheathe is notably more advanced than the now obsolete R.M.C. ExoDerm, even featuring the ability to sweat and apparently bleed, and incorporating multiple refinements to protection. While still featuring the equivalent of a dense skin weave, such structure is much more difficult to detect within the artificial skin. Below it are flexible subdermal layers and membranes designed to defeat or diffuse other types of damage, include armor-piercing and monomolecular threats, while still mimicking muscle tissue rather than any kind of rigid structure. This attention to detail extends to the mouth and other orifices as well, and the Raiden is not only anatomically accurate but can even eat and drink for the sake of its biopod maintenance and (admittedly quite limited) self-repair of certain features, to include replenishment of bodily fluid mimicry.

Finally, the Raiden is designed to be both untrackable and more importantly unhackable. In addition to being difficult to detect through observation, its internal software is written with a custom and proprietary code, it has no external links or interface plugs whatsoever, no remote access, and does not come with any tracking devices installed. There are only three physical maintenance links (a primary and two backups) which cannot be readily detected or accessed, being located deep within the unit's structure. In essence, there is no easy way into its systems without completely disabling it, nor does it emit any signals which could be remotely detected.

An obvious consequence of this design philosophy is that the Raiden has no built-in weapons, active sensors, or communication links. It was judged that relying on traditional human modularity in equipment was a small price to pay for all the benefits accrued, and would actually not only lower production costs but better befit the intended objective of flexibility... That and the Raiden could scarcely be considered ‘unarmed’ even when lacking any weapons. With a testbed completed, the next step was to select a candidate for the final production prototype...

Several entirely volunteer programs (for what besides black ops was obviously left unsaid) were started within both the Japanese Army and NUSA Army and Marine Corps to identify the ideal candidate. Perhaps unexpectedly, the person ultimately selected not only came from the Japanese Army, but was a woman. Her identity prior to her recruitment was scoured from every database and record, and in exchange for effectively starting over she was allowed to customize the look of her Raiden. Using her own appearance as a template, she made several cosmetic changes (notably making her Raiden taller at 5′8″, enhancing its physique, adjusting her facial features somewhat, giving herself gold irises, and adding an iridescent blue-red quality to her black hair) to distinguish it from her past life and actually make it less conspicuous than a fully unmodified human would be. Finally, she picked the name Yoruichi Shihōin for herself. Orientation and rollout testing were soon well underway, and she had just been given a constructed identity and Japanese and NUSA passports when the entire situation went to hell.

The Raiden had been developed at a joint FACS-Militech facility in a remote part of Hawaii, which had been judged an adequate compromise both geographically and politically. In late 2073, the facility came under attack. By who (or what) has never been conclusively determined—although many in both FACS and Militech would later naturally blame Arasaka, even if their involvement seems highly dubious. In any event, the result was well-documented: the total destruction of the facility, the remaining Raiden testbed, most of the project records (including those relating to personnel), and apparently all staff involved. While some off-site backups had been made, the highly sensitive nature of the project meant that almost all information regarding it was stored on-site. Indeed, neither the FACS nor Militech corporate offices were aware of how many (if any) prototypes had been built. They would accordingly ultimately cover up the entire incident and sweep it under the rug while focusing on other parts of their relationship.

What they did not know was that Yoruichi had survived the attack. A good and loyal soldier, once it’d become clear what was happening she’d secured records of the project as best she’d been able, fought her way out, and retreated to a safe distance to wait for backup to arrive. None did—the project was if anything too secret. Accordingly, she finally went to ground to evade detection by any follow-up assault while mulling over how to contact her hapless beneficiaries. Ironically, her initial attempts were treated as prank calls. She was weighing up the possibility of success from going to corporate offices or a military base in person when it suddenly dawned on her that she was actually free. Neither company seemed to have any record of her existence, and while she had official identities, they were as milquetoast as they came. She was a nobody.

A nobody with no money, no connections, no native ability to interact with the Net and not even an old school cyberdeck, stuck on an island chain still overwhelmingly dominated by the NUSA military—but she at least had an assault rifle. Yoruichi subsequently acquired a set of clothes from the local civilian population before ditching the identifying uniform she still had from the facility, then proceeded to secure funding for herself by ‘liberating’ it from various nearby criminal elements. Finally discarding her weapon, she would buy some fundamentals and a plane ticket out—destination: Night City. The newly reascendant free city would give her time, space, and opportunity to plan her next moves.

Over the next four years, Yoruichi carved out an interesting niche for herself in the city. While routinely taking jobs as a Techie and having some underground notoriety as a Rockergirl, she most notably has a very particular reputation as a Solo specializing in retrieval: she works clean and doesn’t get caught. (Not that anyone knows of, anyway.) How exactly she does this is something of a mystery given her evident nature, but she’s noted for not leaving much if any trail in her wake, bodies or otherwise. She’s also noted for being picky about jobs, falling back on her other careers when only disliked or distasteful missions are available to her.

However, her overwhelmingly nonlethal reputation shouldn’t get one twisted into thinking she’s ever unarmed. While she still has a lingering preference for wares from Tsunami Defense Systems, she isn’t choosy besides having a vague aversion to Arasaka weapons and gear. She’s most commonly seen with some very fancy and advanced looking brass knuckles (that clearly aren’t made of brass) and some combination of a Tsunami Nue, a Militech M-76e Omaha, and a Militech M251s Ajax, although she’s lately been more routinely spotted with an interestingly-colored (jet black and copper) Malorian Arms 3516.

Unbeknownst to anyone on the street, she’s also been quietly amassing a veritable armory of heavy weaponry in a secure location, to include things like: a Militech M-179 Achilles, a Midnight Arms MA70 HB, a M2A5HB Browning .50cal HMG, a Tsunami Helix, a Colt-Mauser M2X Cannon, a Rhinemetall EMG-85 Railgun, and a Militech AM-3 “Anti-Matter Rifle”, among many, many others. What exactly she’s collecting such an arsenal for besides a rainy day is an open question.

Nobody quite seems to know where exactly she lives or what her home’s like, but she is known to own a Quadra Turbo-R V-Tech, a Quadra Type-66 Avenger, and a Yaiba Kusanagi CT-3X, all apparently very heavily customized. The Turbo-R V-Tech is the one most commonly seen.

It should be noted that despite her (apparently) Japanese heritage, Yoruichi’s physical attributes allow others to read her origins as they desire in a kind of ‘eye of the beholder’ way. It’s likely she will be identified as Japanese by other countrymen despite her darker skin, but others are likely to assume she’s whatever is easiest for them to imagine.

She knows at least English, Japanese, and Spanish, though she defaults to the former and speaks without a foreign accent. Her word-choice, syntax, and phraseology errs more toward Corpo than Street, but she fluidly blends and switches styles often enough to leave others confused as to her background. Her fashion sense is similarly varied depending on situation and context, often mixing elements of Kitsch and Neomilitarism, although she occasionally wears items suggesting Entropism and Neokitsch as well.

Who she is, where she comes from, where her allegiances lie, and just how much wealth and influence she has are all mysteries not easily untangled, and all are the source of persistent rumor.

You love and hate too much.

Whenever I think about how liberal or conservative something should be I think of this clip from Best of the Worst. Granted, I am not talking about political liberalism or political conservatism. I'm talking about being artistically liberal or artistically conservative.

When you are artistically liberal you let the mask slip and you share innermost thoughts and feelings in your artwork and just give people only what you want to see which for art is the point but if your art is part of or is a product to be bought and consumed, being overly liberal pushes patrons out of buying your artwork because they disagree with what you created and why.

When you are artistically conservative you withdraw or hide your innermost thoughts and feelings in exchange for a more guarded and in some cases a more inclusive form of expression. You reign yourself in and in exchange you give others a piece of your work to take as they wish.

Lets go back to the clip. The Killer Eye is the focus of the film, but Mike states that just because the film is about the Killer Eye, the entire film doesn't need to have the Killer Eye in every scene and in full view.

It would have benefited the film more to restrain how often the Killer Eye appeared but they loved the prop too much and as such they were liberal with its usage and it hurt the film from a patron sort of view because Horror has a formula that optimizes audience impact.

That being Less is More.

However, what if Killer Eye was so conservative that the eye is never seen? That wouldn't be better because it would deny a payoff and it would bring into question on whether or not the prop even existed or if in fact, the prop did exist but it was so horrible looking and poorly made that it was cut entirely.

The Stellar Blade discourse is absolutely bonkers. If you asked me, there's no difference between Sybil and Eve. And the sexiness of Sybil is not understated.

You mean to tell me that because one is an Asian Woman and the other is a Goat Anthro, we're talking about different forms of sex appeal?

No, I don't think so.

If you get rid of the people talking about the culture war and focused on the reviews about the gameplay. You'll see two of the same things.

Thirsty users making single sentence reviews where they extol their desire for sex with the character.

Normal people who actually liked the gameplay.

And that's fine and I won't lie, Sybil and Eve are Sights for Sore Eyes.

I do think they are overly liberal designs though. Although saying that, there is a option for Sybil to wear pants. For Eve though there's an option where her outfit exposes even more of her body.

Joke aside though, it's just a point of fact, Stellar Blade loves the female form just a little too much. I get it. You base the design off a model who is sexy for a living which by extension makes the main character in your game a sex model cyborg that fights weird monsters and the gameplay is. Well it's fine. There are a lot of games that play like this. I would rather play Kingdom Hearts myself but maybe someone else would just play Elden Ring. It doesn't look special, so it feels like the hook really is how sexy Eve is.

And to be fair, it's not literal porn.

But still, this is very liberal.

Now lets talk about conservative artwork.

I have a hot take. I think Frey from Forspoken is attractive. Her mouth (The way she talks, not her literal lips which are quite pretty) is an astronomical turnoff. She's riddled with stereotypes from growing up without proper parental figures, being a black person that steals for a living, and always talking smack while spending a lot of time around people who will slap you for talking smack to them.

But that's all a matter of writing. Frey is perfectly average in terms of body types and if I was on a dating site looking for Ms. Right I'd be fine with Frey based only on looks.

Lets look at Mary Jane.

This. Is also fine. But Mary Jane is supposed to be above average because she's made to be the Girl Next Door which is a level of attraction that is very high but not lewd and often paired with a seiso personality.

The face in particular isn't very feminine, it is a trait you could easily inherit but it's not a heart shaped face which is more optimal for a classically pretty female.

So she should have been designed with a Heart Shaped face given that Mary Jane is supposed to be beautiful and is Spiderman's most prominent romantic interest.

To design Mary Jane like this, is a very conservative move because with just one change you've stripped a lot from that character to be inclusive to anyone that is offended by a trope that the character was originally designed to have (above average sex appeal).

Now this.

We might have a problem here.

Okay so, we already talked about the heart shaped face. I don't think we have that here.

There's also an extreme lack of breasts. She isn't wearing body armor so we really should see a prominent chest. Breasts are mostly fat and while this is a fictional setting, the average breast size of a western woman is C-34DD. The above character is A maybe B but probably less than A which is common among Japanese women (yes, that's right. Mature Japanese women occasionally have the body type of Young or immature woman, at least in regards to breast size).

But like I said. Breasts are mostly fat so if the character is in a setting where acquiring a calorie rich diet is difficult they could have a breasts that are very small, additionally, this could also delay puberty.

I don't know how old the character is but if they are under 18 and don't eat meat then this is possible. Knowing how tall this character is would help as well but we're probably looking at around the lower end of 150 pounds and if this person is below 5'8 they would have to be very thin to not have at least B cup sized breasts.

They have a weapon, do they actually see combat? While being skin and bones? Okay, I mean high fantasy but also Fable is known to have characters bulk up when they have a strength focused design and breasts don't have fat in them so this character could have more muscle on them and the design would make more sense but even then those women still have bigger boobs than the above character.

This design is very conservative to the point of looking like it objects to seeing the female form.

I see this sort of thing in children's cartoons where the cast is anthro and the art designers don't want to draw boobs on the female animals for whatever reason.

But those are cartoon animals. This is a character design based off of a real person.

It's way too conservative.

Yeah, so. Okay Oda. Maybe the lady from fable has the body of a young male protagonist and Stellar Blade is just Kingdom Hearts with titties.

Superman Double Feature: John Henry Irons and Kong Kenan

John I’ve drawn before, but he was one of Metropolis’s earlier heroes alongside Superman, having fought Brainiac together. The two of them also helped Daily Planet reporters Lois Lane and Clark Kent break the earliest stories on Lex Luthor (and his by-then deceased father, Lionel’s) illegal actions as head of LexCorp. John did always think it was strange Kal was never with him when he met with Clark, and Clark was always running off before he had a chance to meet Kal.

After Kal’s first death at the hands of Doomsday, John learned the truth, meeting Kal’s genetically engineered child, Lara Kon-El, along with two other would-be successors: Eradicators, a Kryptonian A.I., and one of the Cyborg Supermen, formerly the human astro-adventurer Henry “Hank” Henshaw of LexCorp’s four-person Rocket Group.

John was eventually lost in the Bleed for a time. Taking on the identity of “Captain Luthor” on another Earth, he fought a corrupted, fascist version of Superman...and had a daughter. Back on his home-Earth, John’s niece, Natasha, took on the role of Steel with her Arclight-armor, leading a group of similar power armor user, the Men of STEEL.

Kong Kenan is the New Super-Man, sometimes referred to as the Superman of China, which is technically accurate but a bit on the nose. His Justice League consider themselves a Pan-Asian group not beholden to borders in pursuit of protecting innocents, which occasionally causes issues with governments and their more nationalist super-teams. August General-in-Iron in particular cannot stand this kid, almost killing him during a fight over Dragonson and Devour. They’ve since reached a tense truce, ostensibly part of the same group as the “Great Twenty” despite internally remaining split between the Great Ten and the Justice League of China.

Kenan himself is something of a legacy hero, son of Liberty Goddess and Flying Dragon General, though he inherited neither his mother’s technical genius nor his father’s tactical ingenuity. Initially quite average--even a bit of a bully--one of his mother’s experiments in Kryptonian Qi gave him the powers of Superman. Forced to the center of the Chinese super-hero community and despite his powers rapidly destroying his body, Kenan rose to the occasion, drawing others like Peng Deilan and Wang Baixi to his side as allies. Through his growth and the help of his mentors, Kenan survived Doctor Omen’s ill-fated experiment and connected with his power as a living embodiment of the principles of Yin and Yang.

The same cannot be said of Doctor Omen’s other Super-Man.

1. I suggest blocking the tag ‘shadow manager’ if making fun of conspiracies, taking the piss out of politics or rich celebrities' such as Jeff Bezos getting eaten by a Kracken is uncomfortable for you. As this show does make fun of a lot of it and is inherently political. I will be doing my best to do what would be considered ‘rp acceptable’ while keeping the feeling of the show. I came up with the tag to avoid people searching up ‘deepstate’ or ‘reagan’.

2. Lizard people while a critique on the whole conspiracy itself, I will rework them into ‘deep ones’ or some kind of Eldritch horror or demon people in the populace instead. Mostly as I realize how offensive some of the Jewish community finds it and while I have some ties to such a background? I feel as though it’s prominent enough to address for the sake of comfort of other people. Cthulhu is canonically involved as a figure in the ‘Deepstate’ along with presumably Satan considering the blood sacrifices to them. So it works, as RP canon isn’t more important to me than actually not being a dickhead on something I don’t feel I have a place on addressing.

3. Feel free to have supernatural muses interact with Reagan, as she is beneficial to them and would work with them as part of her job. To either cover up their existence from the populace or to help appease their needs or demands. Granted this would have to be higher beings such as Cthulhu or Satan or even Angelic ones to appease them or some kind of ‘wealthy benefactor’? It depends really. Is disappointed by the people around her constantly in not appreciating her or efforts. Is rather ruthless if pushed to the brink or just is at times. Sees herself as better than most. Is gullible to people she loves. Incredibly hard working. Often throws herself into her work instead of dealing with her emotional trauma or problems. Stubborn. Can often enter self-denial with her problems and resorts to the above. Ambitious. Dominating. Can be fun and is rather millennial-esque in terms of humor. Likes booze. Weird. Can sound out of her mind. Can be incredibly unstable. Stressed as fuck at nearly all hours of the day. Constantly making things efficient. Likes fast-food and snacks. Mental traits: Has ADHD, potentially autistic and or is on the anti-social disorder spectrum. (Sociopathy) or both. Has forms of heavy PTSD. Has the brain of a super genius from being heavily experimented on as a child or (embryo) along with her memories being pretty jacked up. (This part I’m just presuming considering the lengths of what her dad is willing to go to such as controlling her memories of her friends and family when she was a child). Has a near robotic mental state but a personality/flaws and problems, I base this on the comments of her own AI creation. Physical traits: Weighs around 141 pounds. Is around 5′5. Has a slightly prominent hooked nose. She does have breasts, but they’re not exactly that big. Her body-type is androgynous and has some hips and thighs but not a lot. It is there though however. Has weak endurance despite any augments she may have. Often wears a scrunchie. Has varying degrees of bags under her eyes. Powers:

Has MacGyver like abilities and can transform average objects into deadly weapons or turn trash or garbage into things she needs or otherwise. I’ll try not to abuse this or at least have a heavy downside to it at times.

Has incredible calculations on the fly along with able to create technology or understanding it nearly in a moment’s notice if given it and allowed to examine it. So while limited by the current level of tech that Earth has? She has shown able to create advanced AIs from scratch along with nanomachines.

Has nonmagnetic internal nanomachines inside her body to do as she needs or pleases. This is why she can stay up at weeks at a time and has demonstrated them before when using them for her ex-boyfriend. This still takes a mental toll however.

Has nonmagnetic implants and biological augments, though most of them are non-combative. It’s mostly to help with her reflexes, mental calculations along with physical capabilities at times. Mostly to explain her abilities within the show while also giving a touch of depth. Along with the fact she seems to be able to shake off drugs or booze. It wouldn’t be a surprise to me if she had artificial organs as well for some of it. It depends, as she can’t run for shit despite demonstrating some super human abilities. Uses mostly gadgets and such to compensate or her himbo friend ‘Brett’ for physical needs.

Being a super genius in able to analyze most forms of tech and re-engineering or modifying it to her needs on the fly.

Motivations: To be appreciated for her work and efforts and reach her goals. To destroy her enemies or people that cross her. To solve the worlds’ problems. To be loved. Backstory:

Basically the Co-Manager of the Shadow Government Company in running the Deep State for the CEO of it and Shadow Elites known as ‘The Robes’. She’s been raised for this since a child, has been abused, manipulated or controlled in her memories or outright mocked by her father. Being isolated from her friends or other family other than her mother or outright abused and made to kill her own pets after accidently giving them cancer while trying to give them super powers. There’s probably more to it and I’m willing to say that more messed up stuff has occurred down the line. It is what it is. Then while a lesser offender, both her mother and father have been pretty ableist toward her and making their problems together hers in being an incredibly toxic and unstable family. So while sympathetic, likable and comedic at times? She does have a lot of problems and is a complex character rather than being reduced to one nuance of being Saturday cartoon evil. So it’s mostly dealing with the world and companies problems on a day to day basis while dealing with near apocalypses on a rather month by month basis. Then juggling the appeasement of the Shadow Elites, or Elites in other sectors while also maintaining some form of ethical conduct as best as she can or wants to at the time.

More non-Ichigo character thoughts. This time, Rukia.

Sleving the ones who are actually permanently children for whatever reason completely unexplained at least before the novels, haven’t been following the novels. Like the Digimon Adventure universe movies, the only other cartoon I like on its own merit and not because it’s tied to my cartoon-loving dad who died of racially motivated fetishistic abuse against Asians, the same which most fandom exhibits, the Bleach novels seem like they’re mostly there to justify the poor rush job that the epilogue was. Again, same as the Adventure epilogue. Just, the literal twelve-year old fans decided to hop on the family computer and type up some fix-it fic to post on their Geocities rather than the terrible-twos-esque temper tantrums we saw from some Bleach fans.

Anyway, so, you know, there was definitely a deep love between Renji and Rukia that appeared when Renji was fighting Ichigo, though not in the early stuff, because seat-of-pants writing. Been there, and I think anyone who’s written fic has.

However, not only do none of their interactions ever read as romantic, they don’t read as the same maturity level except for the early jail taunting bit.

Renji reads like a lot of his peers, except that his childhood as a street urchin haunts him especially hard.

Remember episode one? The first thing Rukia gets mad about ends with her claiming she’s ten times Ichigo’s age. When she binds him, she takes time to draw on his face before going to do her duty.

I just mentioned the whole problem of characters’ trajectories veering wildly onto a completely different road. Shoot, look at early Gin and end Gin. (Leaving aside early Orihime who wants to be a cyborg and wants to fight to protect Tatuki like Tatuki always protected her, and her veering into Nurse Nancy In Distress Orihime, which compounds sexism because yes, the work is sexist and all sorts of queerphobic. I really would’ve loved to see a follow-up on when she decides to destroy the Hogyoku, honestly)

However, Rukia… never really moves past or gets veered off the course of her early characterisation. Even her very sweet scene with Orihime in the early Arrancar arc—it frankly read *way* more like possibly shippy peer content between them.

There are totally adults that size—I’ve known white, black, and non-white European cis men under four foot nine and Rukia’s height and build is not at all uncommon for E/SE Asian women. Her and Momo both look like just short women, not the same as, say, Hiyori or Tousirou, who are clearly just perma-kids. The average Japanese woman is five foot two/157 or 158 cm, but that height and build is not uncommon. (And though mine was racially motivated because I’m Asian enough, furthermore, Japanese enough, Momo seriously needs more love—takes a DV survivor to know a DV survivor. Clearly Aizen has groomed probably even her sense of self out of her, and neither canon nor fandom is particularly kind to her. There is not much explicit about what went on between them, but I honestly see no other possible reading for her)

Just…Rukia doesn’t ever end up reading like someone who would make a good parent. Yes, the parents of all Bleach teens are absolutely dysfunctional—the adults in positions of authority over them in Karakura all are somehow. However, what little we see in the new SJ Bleach chapter, which I actually bought at my local Japanese language bookstore, so I’m going off the original in my native language, thankfully, they’re not just repeating the dysfunction. (Though I’m very curious why there does seem to be formal kinship terms despite the fact that Kubo unimaginatively rolled with current Japanese law—thank the LDP, America’s favourite—and Rukia married out instead of Renji marrying in, as evidenced by their name plaque at their door. Clearly, there is some Kuchiki influence in their family, though… scratching my head)

It’s another undeveloped, inexplicable thing, just, I mean, while the read I got was Orihime seeing Ichigo as her hero when abuse is on all sides, totally reasonable, and Ichigo seeing Nurse Nancy in Distress Orihime as a *responsibility,* and that is just never the underpinnings of a healthy relationship. I don’t even care if you’re talking a D/s relationship, you don’t start off on that foot and expect to last, at least there was *some something* going on?

Renji and Rukia just don’t read romantic, and furthermore, Rukia just doesn’t read mature enough to be a mother at all. Rukia looks like she could be in her twenties, but she acts like a teenager throughout. Any time she’s not in line of duty mode, she just acts like Ichigo’s age. So that development was absolutely a curveball.

(And “people can be born as ghosts” is just a whole another issue and posts. Artificial bodies being capable of reproduction resulting in living children? OK. Ghosts having ghost babies…? Stretching a little too far for my taste)

How do video games contribute to capitalism?

Video games have been around for a very long time and at first, looking over the idea of them appears as nothing more than just a basic game. Now as I have grown older I find the relationship between video games and capitalism with living. “The video gaming industry is a highly competitive and profitable global industry” (Ow 2003). Creators of these games plan for success at the cost of using explicit content for people who are not of age. In a capitalist world, something is programed into society to be good if it causes no harm. In this case society has idolized video games as fictional and not harmful to society. But what if we see how the idea behind games is intentional about the fear of living in one’s true reality. Video games are used to distract someone from their reality by programing games to be a better life or a better reality for the time they are played. The feeling of shifting away from what is real to what is an illusion brings the users in. Games then can be described as “simple binary switches that are either off or on” (Kolko 2000).

How is identity tourism used in video games?

“People put on an identity to try to get others to do something” (Nakamura 2011). Identity tourism is played out by people who want to take on a new body. People in the video game space use this to act out as someone they are not. For instance, portraying another gender in return for pleasure. This form of identity is used in video games because people are acting out roles in return for pleasure. This is an issue because people playing the role use stereotypes to interpret a specific race and gender. People who do identity tourism continue to do it because in the video game world the idea of playing around is normalized meaning using a different identity at the cost of hurting others is deemed to be normal.

Why are villains in video games typically represented in dark colors?

From the beginning of times, Europeans used color to represent good from evil, and years later we continue to see this in video games. Europeans were thought out to be civilized and good because of the bright colors they would wear. Africans were then given darker colors which made them evil. “Rather they are, in implicit ways, we are often entirely unconscious of a means of creating hierarchies and differential systems of value” (Fickle 2019). Racial differences in the US are rooted in the Black and White paradigm. They are projected onto the bodies of Europeans and African Americans in North America. This creates intermediate racial grouping among Black and White people. To move from ideological racism and social position a multiracial space is needed. One that does not gloss over differences but acknowledges them in ways that better society and helps us move away from the stereotypes that have been carried thus far.

Does Race matter less in cyberspaces?

I believe Race is equally important in all spaces. “Moreover, despite popular utopian rhetoric to the contrary, we believe that race matters no less in cyberspace than it does in real life” (Kolko 2000). Just because people are behind a screen does not permit them to be racists. Being in cyberspace is not a ticket to be racist, however, most use this as an opportunity to do so. To move away from this narrative people must acknowledge others and their emotions.

Four Racial Futures

Summary: Four alternative paths to the current dominant left/liberal racial vision for future America are discussed, including an underestimate of the size of the white population, Castizo Futurism, Landian Hyper-Racism, and changes in society's understanding of developmental psychology.

‘Majority Minority’ America? Don’t Bet on It John J. Miller, Wall Street Journal (2021/02) [paywall]

“The surge in mixing across ethno-racial lines is one of the most important and unheralded developments of our time,” says Mr. Alba, a professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He rattles off facts and figures: Today, more than 10% of U.S.-born babies have one parent who is nonwhite or Hispanic and one who is white and not Hispanic. That proportion is larger than the number of babies born to two Asian parents and not far behind the number of babies born to two black parents. “We’re entering a new era of mixed backgrounds,” Mr. Alba says.

The census apparently counts those who identify as both white and non-white as 'non-white,' which may be undercounting the number of people who are likely to identify as 'white' in the United States. Sociologist Richard Alba argues that assimilation is bidirectional, but proceeding apace.

The infamous Razib Khan chimes in on Twitter:

On the one hand, we have the largely implicit left-wing theory that if there is no majority race, there can be no organized oppression by a majority race. On the other, the implicitly-left-wing theory that if there are many mixed-race people, it will become too difficult to organize by race - identifying people on the basis of race will be harder and people will have split loyalties.

Either might fail on its own. If people are naturally prone to politics by race and ethnicity, then a lack of a clear supermajority in a majority-minority country may lead to shifting ethnic coalitions, with no group feeling that it's in a comfortable position of power. Even within a mixed group, there might be selection in some specific direction, such as colorism, which is currently its own category of discourse.

On the other hand, it's apparently possible that some form of unironic 'Multiracial Whiteness' could "win," either from widespread adoption of 'white' as a norm even if whites were a minority, or by a supermajority ending up 7/8ths 'white' and the definition of 'white' expanding to match...

[Quora] What is Castizo Futurism? Renatto Belerofonte (2020)

Among the right-wingers, there is also a joke that "the Alt Right is a hispanic movement." And just as there is Afro-Pessimism, there is a 'White Optimism' in the form of "Castizo Futurism," as Quora user Renatto Belerofonte describes better than I could:

Castizo Futurism comes from the idea that the future of whites in the United States and Latin America is not as dire as white supremacists that believe in white genocide think it is. White Identitarians traditionally organize their societies through Hypodescent (the idea that the offspring of an union between two conflicting classes adopts the social standing of the lower class involved) [...] An example of hypodescent would be the One Drop Rule.

Castizo Futurism is basically the adoption of Hyperdescent by American White Supremacists, the idea that whiteness is a malleable condition that can morph according to the material and historical conjuncture of society. If Hispanics in the US suddenly stop being “non-whites” and start to be perceived as “mostly mestizos and castizos that are already predominantly European with various degrees of native blood” then you can conceive the prospect of “whitening” them overtime. If Mestizos can become Castizos (which according to White Supremacists is the cut-off at which you start to manifest European behavior and appearance) then there is the possibility that White Genocide can be reversed.

As Renatto writes, "if you look at non-anglo societies this paradigm is not the case [...] Spanish, Portuguese and French societies in America believed that you could 'become' white through generations of intermarriage..."

Human beings grow old and wish to create a legacy in their environments. For some people, this is children. For others, it is activism. Suppose you tie your self-identity to a great confrontation to overcome "whiteness," and then just as you saw the traditions of your ancestors as something outdated to be overturned, most of an entire generation simply ignore you and decide that they are now white.

Who, exactly, is going to stop them?

Of course, there is no guarantee that this will happen, but at the same time, there is no requirement that it won't.

One of the great advantages to adopting relatively liberal methods and tactics is that you aren't obligated to pin your hopes on demographic triumphalism - if the future goes a bit off-script, that isn't necessarily a problem. And it may well go off-script; one of the characteristics of the future that I have tried to express in my blogging is that, for most of us, it will be unexpected.

Why does the old conventional racism use hypodescent? Old conventional racism might claim to be based on thinking in terms of evolution, but it isn't necessarily. Often it proceeds as if race is primordial, trailing back into the mists of time. Why embrace hyperdescent now? In part, because 'white' was something that emerged once through evolution and selection, and it's implemented as a statistical distribution of heritable traits (even if those heritable traits are solely appearance). As long as those traits exist, it can simply be recreated if the appropriate conditions arise.

Speaking of statistical distributions of traits, there are some pessimists that argue that intra-European political preferences are heritable and conserved.

But even those 'within-white' preferences, should they exist, may end up scrambled...

Assortative mating tends to genetic diversification. This is neither the preserved diversity of ordinary racism, still less the idealized genetic pooling of the anti-racists, but a class-structured mechanism for population diremption, on a vector towards neo-speciation. It implies the disintegration of the human species, along largely unprecedented lines, with intrinsic hierarchical consequence. The genetically self-filtering elite is not merely different — and becoming ever more different — it is explicitly superior according to the established criteria that allocate social status. Analogical fusion with Cochran’s space colonists is scarcely avoidable. If SES-based assortative mating is taking place, humanity (and not only society) is coming apart, on an axis whose inferior pole is refuse. This is not anything that ordinary racism is remotely able to process. That it is a consummate nightmare for anti-racism goes without question, but it is also trans-racial, infra-racial, and hyper-racial in ways that leave ‘race politics’ as a gibbering ruin in its wake.

"The problem with ordinary racism," Nick Land writes, "is its utter incomprehension of the near future."

If the conventional racists view race as primordial, as something that can only be either preserved or lost, and the would-be Castizo Futurists view race as something that can change over generations, then the Transhumanists are the most radical. Transhumanists tend to view the body mechanically, as a system of parts, each of which could potentially be replaced. This is the view on the macro level - they would support growing new organs in vats and transplanting them - but it's also true on the micro level. To a Transhumanist, a gene is not the same thing as a person who has it, and a gene is not in itself sacred any more than the radiator on your car is sacred. (Alter someone's genetics unwillingly, however, and you might find far more stern disagreement - not unlike the violent disagreement you might get if you broke into someone's car and stole their radiator.)

Someone once described Americans as 'temporarily-embarassed millionaires.' For temporarily-embarassed cyborgs, much of contemporary race discourse is just not very impressive. For Liberal Transhumanists, a man who has inherited frail leg bone genes is not an inherently unworthy being, but is merely someone who has not yet received robot legs - just as they are human beings who have not yet received anti-aging pills. And if some men have sturdy leg bone genes instead? Rather than a threat of enduring hierarchy, those genes represent potential untapped capital that could be used to raise the standard of living (from the typical subjective perspective).

In the famous animated franchise Ghost in the Shell, the lead character has an entirely synthetic body, except for her brain. If this were possible (and at this point, we don't know that it is, though we're continuing to experiment in fields like tissue engineering), one might describe a society capable of it as "also trans-racial, infra-racial, and hyper-racial in ways that leave ‘race politics’ as a gibbering ruin in its wake."

Are there risks involved with this mindset? Certainly. But many of the basic criticisms will ring as hollow to transhumanists as basic conservative criticisms ring hollow to many left-wing and liberal readers.

This future is not yet etched in stone, but on the other hand, an article in Nature published in 2020 argued that...

Together, these findings suggest that there are, at present, no known insurmountable hurdles to the eventual development of safe and effective clinical applications of genome editing in humans. […] Therapeutic genome editing will be realized, at least for some diseases, over the next 5-10 years.

Part of what makes contemporary race discourse so unimpressive to transhumanists is that it fails to integrate Crispr or PGD-IVF into its moral imagination. Right-wingers are said to look backwards, and left-wingers and progressives to look forwards. But while the right-wing WrathOfGnon would encourage readers think on ancestral time scales by physically building villages out of traditional materials (a view which, right or wrong, is consistent), a number of Progressives fail to imagine beyond the next fifteen years.

...or perhaps they do. Can children consent to what's considered a genetic disease (such as Tay-Sachs, which is quite lethal)? Would having kids the old-fashioned way come to be seen as a low-class activity for rednecks and religious fundamentalists? There are ways in which genetic equity is at odds with genetic freedom.

It's also possible that they are simply technology pessimists, maintaining multiple rings of protection in case technology should fail to pan out this century. Though if this is their perspective, perhaps they should consider the potential dangers of their current rhetoric as well.

Contrary to the Liberal Transhumanists, for someone like Land, everything is highly competitive evolution.

genomic manipulation capabilities, which will also be unevenly distributed by SES, will certainly intensify the trend to speciation, rather than ameliorating it.

I take issue with Land, here. Not just morally (though he writes "this blog generally seeks to spread dismay whenever the opportunity arises"), but in practical terms.

Every time we edit a gene, we risk an off-target result, which may cause disease. The tradeoffs for early genetic engineering favor focusing on monogenic disease, the sort of situation where your choices are to risk genetic engineering or experience near-certain death by age 30. Many traits like intelligence or general health, should they be genetic, are likely highly polygenic. Hypothetically, a rich man could pay for a thousand edits, but this would only work with a relatively mature technology where the rate of error is very, very low.

Something closer to the opposite of Nick Land's idea might come to pass, in which sharp negative points are eroded away except for a few populations such as religious conservatives, including the literal Amish, and medical skeptics, paid for by big institutions like insurance companies and public health authorities. In twenty years, the likes of L0m3z, a right-wing Twitter contrarian, may write about the coming "Planet of Midwits."

As for Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis In-Vitro Fertilization, although it is currently being used for preventing the transmission of Huntington's Disease (if you have $35,000 to spare), the gains from embryo selection for other traits can be more limited than people might expect.

GLENN: I'm talking to one of the great economists working on human development. What are you up to at the Center for the Economics of Human Development at the University of Chicago?

HECKMAN: Well, one of the great issues of course, always, is exactly how do you improve the lot of human beings. Namely, how do you measure what improvement is, what are the relevant life skills, and then how do you develop those skills? What's the proper role for social policy, and I don't mean just governmental policy, I mean social policy? There are some very strong interventions, evidence for interventions, showing how if you tell parents a certain amount of information that they lack, it can have huge effects on their children. And the same is true of interventions that occur in adolescent years. Human potential is not being fully utilized. [...] I've been working on this not only in the US, but in several countries around the world - a lot of time spent in China, recently.

HECKMAN: And then gradually society has become more and more cognitively focused. Well that sounds good. When Governor Clinton was governor of Arkansas, well all of these well-meaning officials were talking about how to improve schools, what do they talk about? Nate scores - reading, writing, and arithmetic. They don't talk about character formation. They don't talk about self-control, executive functioning, the way you can help govern your life. [...]

HECKMAN: One of the main lessons of this body of work, and I'm proud to have contributed to this, is in showing the power of social and emotional and personality skills in shaping lives. Skills that can be actually cultivated, and skills that can be cultivated not just at the beginning of life, but through adolescence especially.

What evidence is there? Aside from more contemporary study in his own field, Heckman mentions discusses the Perry Preschool Project, a topic which comes up sometimes when one is looking into this field. While increases in IQ scores failed to stick, the experimental group had improvements in other life outcomes such as earnings, home ownership, and lower risk of incarceration.

HECKMAN: ...but the way you take the kid to the next step matters a lot. You've got to do it with some patience, and with some empathy - some attachment. And so there's a whole subject matter in child development psychology which we're looking at now - we actively are exploring.

HECKMAN: By the way, I don't want to pretend this is all completely known. This is what makes the work that I'm doing now so exciting. Because now we're measuring these interactions, week by week. This is now not in the US, it's in western China, one of the poorest areas. We can see how the interactions between the parent and the child are leading to the growth of skills on the part of the child. [...]

HECKMAN: This was something that was tried in Jamaica some 40 years ago. I'm working with a group of people with a study that's still ongoing outside of Kingston, Jamaica. It's called the "Reach Up and Learn" study in Jamaica. The China study is patterned after that study. [...]

So the research the Heckman is focused on is not limited to a particular race, country, or culture.

HECKMAN: It turns out that a lot of parents don't really know how to parent. And what do I mean by that? They don't have a clear idea what a normal growth trajectory is for a child, what a child can do. And they often don't understand how powerful they are in shaping the life of the child. So you give them that kind of information. Nobody's being forced to do anything. Just empower people. Almost every caretaker of a young child really wants that child to succeed. [...] When they are told this information, they act on it.

Asian Americans live longer than non-hispanic white Americans, and have a higher median household income. [1☆][2☆] While there is some racial tension between white and asian Americans (see, for instance, ongoing 'cultural appropriation' arguments and other discourse), it's generally considered less of an issue than disparities between the country's white majority and black Americans.

Could parental information and mentoring programs reduce disparities in the United States, even if they aren't resolved? And could this turn down the heat on race discourse?

For instance, at $76k median household income, white households make about 77% of what asian households do. Black American households make about $45k, or about 60% of white American household income. At 77%, they would make about $59k, not far off from the $56k of hispanic households.

What are the potential downsides? The most likely way for the program to fail is for it to have no effect or, at worst, a modest negative effect. [3] It isn't incompatible with an ecological view of human society. It would cost money, but probably not much more than another couple years of additional schooling.

Given the modest downside risk, what are the potential upsides? If the reports on the Perry Preschool Program are accurate and the effects can be replicated, there are a large savings to be had, mostly from the reduction in crime. [4☆]

But can the effects be replicated? The sample size for the Perry Preschool Project was relatively small. As far as Early Childhood Education programs go, the effectiveness of Head Start, which provides more than just preschool and is "based on a 'whole child' model," is disputed. [5☆][6☆] However...

Two older "high-quality" preschool programs mentioned frequently in the research literature are the HighScope Perry Preschool program from Ypsilanti, Michigan, and the Chicago Child-Parent Center (CPC) program. These programs include parent education and support and thus differ in significant ways from the type of preschool programs offered by Head Start, as well as the more recent "high-quality" programs. They are also much more expensive on a per-capita basis. Both the CPC and the HighScope Perry Preschool programs were started in the 1960s, and researchers have carried out long-term cost-benefit analyses for both programs. These analyses conclude that better long-term outcomes more than pay for their higher program costs, mainly in the form of higher career income and lower rates of criminal behavior.

By 2018, the "Reach Up and Learn" program Heckman was speaking of had been expanded to 9 other countries, with varying degrees of effectiveness depending on its implementation. [7☆] (Though its associated US domain has expired.) Heckman's own study is, as one would expect, positive about the effects - and was published in Science.

Early childhood education increased earnings by 25%, enough for growth-stunted children to completely catch up to the earnings of the non-stunted comparison group. The control group remained far behind. In fact, average earnings from full-time jobs were 25% higher for the treatment group than for the control group. Ninety-eight percent of treated children had been employed at age 22, with 94% in full-time jobs.

Jamaica is not America, and interventions that worked under conditions in Jamaica might be less effective in America. However, if it could be achieved, a 25% increase in median income would put black American households at roughly $57k annual income, just above hispanic households, and within striking distance of the $59k target.

A nutritional intervention was also attempted, however, although "Other studies have shown cognitive benefits from nutritional supplementation in the first 24 months," Heckman wrote, "The nutrition supplement for the child was often shared with the family, so it may not have been sufficient to produce better outcomes."

And the nutrition angle might be worth looking into - the study cited (preceded by an analysis, by one of the same authors, of 13 studies on the subject) by Scott Alexander in Society is Fixed, Biology is Mutable showed that vitamins didn't do much for well-nourished kids, but that a minority of undernourished kids may have benefitted greatly.

[3] Heckman's program and attitude suggest that an ideological explanation of how we got here isn't included, just an assumption of lack of access to resources by impoverished parents, whether that's in Jamaica, Peru, or China. This suggests the program lacks a loop where program failure just means that the program wasn't tried hard enough.

[4☆] Updating the Economic Impacts of the High/Scope Perry Preschool Program (2005)

At a 3% discount rate the program repays $12.90 for every $1 invested from the perspective of the general public; with a 7% discount rate, the repayment per dollar is $5.67. Returns are even higher if the total benefits--both public and private--are counted. However, there are strong differences by gender: a large proportion of the gains from the program come from lower criminal activity rates by the treatment group, almost all of which is undertaken by the males in the sample. The implications of these findings for public policy on early childhood education are considered.
