Former Wailers Bassist Aston “Familyman” Barrett Dies at 77
- “My teacher is gone,” Ziggy Marley says
Aston “Familyman” Barrett, the Wailers’ bassist from 1970 until Bob Marley’s death in 1981, died Feb. 3 “after a long medical battle,” the band announced on its social medial platforms.
“The world lost not just an iconic musician and the backbone of the Wailers, but a remarkable human being whose legacy is as immense as his talent,” the announcement said.
Barrett was 77.
“My teacher is gone,” Ziggy Marley said in a statement. “ … We will continue to study his genius for generations to come.”
Post-Wailers, Barrett went on to play with Lee “Scratch” Perry, his former bandmate Peter Tosh, the the Aggrovators and others.
“Your music will live in my heart forever,” Kenny Chesney said of Barrett, who received Jamaica’s Order of Distinction award in 2021.
“As a reggae bass player, … Barrett was obviously one of the best,” UB40 said in a statement. “He was truly inspirational and directly and indirectly inspired us to form our band.”

i see some people with “antiproshipper” in their bio thing, and i’m just like,,,, if they arent causing issues i really just dont care.
while i vaguely understand the viewpoint of being antiproshipper, my issue comes with the fact that some people may use shipping as a form of coping with trauma, and sometimes it may be a ship that is potentially problematic because they may have a similar trauma.
i understand the point of being antiproshipper when it comes to irl ships, especially minor involved ones, thats kinda nasty omg. but when it comes to fictional ships, it gets weird and foggy. if something makes YOU uncomfortable, do what you need to do to avoid it, however just know that sometimes putting dni’s in your blog can sometimes make you seem like you dont want to face reality imo, but again i dont blame you for doing so, especially if you feel at risk. its a complex situation, i think minors are completely fine using some dni’s, especially ones like “no 18+”, or things they may be traumatized by, but other things like “antiproshipper” make me confused. i’m actually gonna go out on a limb here and say that can be kinda harmful for your psyche if you are constantly avoiding things that make you stresses, take this from a person who is currently struggling with avoidance, its not fun. sometimes there are things we can’t avoid, and sometimes we need to learn from these things, even if they are “bad” in nature. actually instead of saying you’re antiproshipper, maybe you should try and actually put some effort into trying to actually making an impact? and i dont mean throwing insults and death threats at people, thats actually stupid and counter productive, i mean maybe trying to make a list of HARMFUL proshippers who actively prey on people and not just make art sometimes of a ship they like. or! even better! do something more important? ngl i see why some people may think its a huge big thing, especially minors, my gosh yeah i understand why minors would be antiproshipper so its just like.... just dont harass people for being proshipper. i think if you find a proshipper, instead of thinking they are a bad person, challenge that thought. why are they shipping these two characters? what situation is this person in? do they deserve harassment? is this shipper hurting anyone? and just generally put yourself in their shoes.
also the whole antishipper thing is just? why? please dont harass people you dont agree with that makes people not wanna talk to you? like come on is basic kindness that hard to do?

Dougson (REGRETAVATOR NPC)
NPC(Dougson) by covnshai
Pronouns: `he/him, they/them`
Floor found: `Arcade`
Can enter the elevator: `yes`
Base HP: `200-400?`
Killable: `yes`
Hostile: `no`
APPEARANCE:
`Dougson takes a resemblance to a fluffy bearded dragon, having yellow and shades of orange blotches and patterns on him. He wears a black cap with a red rim, a black arcade uniform with confetti patterns and a yellow collar, blue shorts and rainbow socks/leg warmers(?). A big star accessory appears to be on his back, a small plate sewn on the back of the uniform. His eyes are small but appear to have no pupils?? His eye color is generally unknown, defaulting to white. He has three big "puffs" of fur with a orange outline on top of his head. He also appears to have no nose(at least not noticeable) but a snout. Dougson is made of confetti.`
DESCRIPTION:
`Dougson will appear behind the prize corner counter with a big red button on the counter beside him in Arcade, they will prompt a minigame in which when you complete it with 10-25 points, they will enter the elevator with you. The minigame they prompt is a TEAM STRATEGY, meaning you can't necessarily do it alone, if you are alone in a public server, the floor will still open for you giving you a chance to grab possible rewards. Though being a private server; Doug will only enter the elevator if 5 points are earned.`
IN THE FLOOR:
Introduction: “hello hello! THE NAME’s DOUG, and I would like to welcome YOU to MY ARCADE!!”
“NOW. Wanna hear something you’ll DEFINITELY enjoy? ME. BUT!! to do that, ya’ needa convince me.”
“Play games to get points! Each game grants ONE point, ya need (10-25) POINTS to win!”
Before he hits the button that starts the minigame:
- “NOW DON’T DISAPPOINT ME! GO GO GO!!”
- “NO TIME TO WASTE! NOW GET STARTED!!”
WHEN SPRAYED WITH SPRAY BOTTLE:
`- STOP IT! YOU'RE GONNA MATT MY FUR!`
`- COLD! COLD!`
`- AYE! I WOULD DO THE SAME TO YOU IF I COULD!`
`- QUIT IT!`
WHEN HIT WITH A SNOWBALL:
`- OW!`
`- QUIT IT!`
`- THIS IS WHY YOU STINK!`
`- HOW WOULD YOU FEEL IF I DID THE SAME TO YA?!`
IDLE:
`- people keep saying i look like a cheeto, i AM NOT a cheeto.`
`- i can really go for some pizza right now. Specifically sausage and mushroom.`
`- I don’t like this… enphoso person… seems way too happy…`
`- womp womp`
`- refunds? never heard of em'`
`- this elevator kinda stinks..`
`- Do any of you know what floor is the uh…? …you know what, never mind.`
`- did you know racecar spelled backwards is racecar?`
`- wait until the both of them find out that houses are both concrete and wood.`
INTERACTION:
1. POOB:
-`Poob: "you seem fun! would you like to party?!" Doug: "party?" Poob: "Yeah!" Doug: "there's gotta be pizza and confetti." Poob: "promiseee"`
-`Doug: "womp womp" Poob: "womp womp?" Doug: "womp." Poob: "womp womp!" Doug: "womp."`
2. PEST:
-`Pest: "..." Doug: "..*he’s staring at pest btw*" Pest: "あなたは何が必要ですか?(what do you need?)" Doug: "... nothing."`
-`Doug: "hello!" Pest: "あなたは明るすぎる(you are too bright)" Doug: "what?" Pest: "明るい...(bright...)" Doug: "erm..."`
3. GNARPY:
-`Doug: "why are you green?" Gnarpy: "WHY ARE YOU YELLOW?! BEAVER!!" Doug: "I'm not a beaver."`
-`Gnarpy: "what are you..." Doug: "who knows, not even I know, what am i?"`
-`Gnarpy: "fool!" Doug: "nuh uh!" Gnarpy: "YEZ!" Doug: "nuh uh."`
4. FAN MADE INTERACTION WITH P1ZA by _angryface1 on discord:
-`P1ZA: "Awww.... you want this DELICIOUS pizza? you do? get your own then." Doug: ":("`
EXTRA:
`He will NOT enter the elevator when MR is inside the elevator, instead he will frown and turn into confetti.` `nor will he enter it with DRRETRO in it as well also frowning, but he doesn’t turn into confetti.
Dougson is the only character in regretevator that avoids DrRETRO. This is reference to a bug in the game when Split came out until GASA4 released, where dr retro when aggrovated, will kill the person responsible then 1-3 npcs in the elevator with her purple beam. He will get off at the Speedrun floor as it's the creator's (me) favorite floor, House Party, and Shop Space.

Today's compilation:
The Wild Bunch 1995 Reggae / Roots Reggae / Rocksteady / Dub
First off, let me just say that I am in total awe of this crop of reggae instrumentals from the 60s and 70s here. So much music since has come with so much more fuss and technological advancements, and yet an unscalable pile of the stuff that came out after this doesn't seem to come close to how good a bunch of these simple tunes still are. In a broad sense, all these songs' formulas are pretty simple, but they really still just manage to click so damn well 😌.
From this comp's liner notes:
During the past eight years, Trojan have pioneered the 'Revival' Reggae scene. Our re-issue programme has preserved some of the best vocals ever recorded in Jamaica, but with the emphasis being placed on some of the island's many talented singers in recent years, the musicians have tended to be ignored. This current release reverses that trend by turning the spotlight onto the 'players of instruments', and in so doing we pay tribute to Kingston's legendary session men.
Now, because nearly all of these are straight-up instrumentals, they all pretty much operate in the same way, and each of them seem to have one thing in common that ends up either making or breaking the tune: the lead instrument. Because reggae riddims are inherently repetitive and steady, if left alone, they will naturally get stale. So, it takes a good melody of some kind to be laid atop that riddim in order to lend the song some much needed variety. And in a whole lot of these 27 tunes, that ends up coming to remarkable fruition.
It's hard to even really know where to begin with this album since there's so much goodness to be found within it, but the thick, whistle-ringing improvisational organ of Lloyd Charmer's "Ling Tong Ting" is an absolutely terrific place to start. Then the JJ All Stars get topsy-turvy with the audio channels on "Memphis Underground," by sending the melodic leads exclusively and *very prominently* through the left, and 90% of the riddim through the right; Herman Marquis' "Tom's Version," whose intro I'm pretty sure I've heard sampled in at least one hip hop tune before (Wu-Tang, maybe? It's honestly driving me crazy that I can't put my finger on it), then follows by doing a wonderful job of harmonizing its organ and trumpet, yielding this fully warm and satisfying haze; the legendary Augustus Pablo, who singlehandedly managed to transform the melodica from a mere plaything for children into an instrument with serious gravitas, shows why on a rootsy piece of dub called "Great Pablo;" and then towards the end, we get a bit of a surprise with a piece of gospel-reggae that's actually not an instrumental: the Harry J All Stars "Holy Moses," which is aided by a small set of female singers whose deployment of soul harmonies reminds of the backup singing that can be found on a bunch of Bob Marley hits.
But the closing title tune by the Music Doctors may be both the most remarkable and most fun track of them all, for the simple fact that it uniquely trades its leads between—not things like guitars, horns, and organs—but just bass and drums. And the bassist just seems to carefreely play this laid-back and very recognizable piece of melody from The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back;" it's so good!
So, a phenomenal collection of rare Jamaican reggae instrumental classics here, from the genre's premier label itself, Trojan. Yesterday, I posted about an excellent metal cassette from 1985 that's also called The Wild Bunch, and given how good that that album was, I really didn't think that this one could outdo it, but it very much did!
Highlights:
Selwyn Baptiste - "Mo' Bay" Boris Gardiner - "Memories of Love" The Dynamites - "Phantom" Sound Dimension - "Soul Food" Lloyd Charmers - "Ling Tong Ting" The Aggrovators - "The Sniper" JJ All Stars - "Memphis Underground" Lynn Taitt & The Jets - "Love Me Forever" Herman Marquis - "Tom's Version" The Tennors - "Copy Me Donkey" Winston Wright - "Heads or Tails" Augustus Pablo - "Great Pablo" Harry J All Stars - "Holy Moses" Music Doctors - "Wild Bunch"

Message.
Oh, she wouldn’t be pleased when she got back, no.
But that’s what made it so fun. Boss told me to give her some orders, and we all knew she wouldn’t like to hear them. I figure she was in the mess hall, or speaking with one of weaker of us.
...But she’d come back eventually.
Vairg's patience was a selective thing. Never much to wait for anything that he could so easily have now, it was only when the payoff was particularly appealing for him that he opted to have any kind of tolerance for it. He slowly taps the toes of his metal boot a few fulms away from his chair, still hooked beneath the handle of the neighbouring door. She'd return eventually. All he had to do was wait.
And wait was a thing he did not have to do for too long. Vex soon finds her way down into the cells, her already weary features pulling into a frown as she glanced towards the captives - despising to be given this sight several times a sun. Her steps continue through the hall and into the solitary area, where she halts upon seeing Vairg stood before the door leading into her cell - the frown deepening just a touch.
"You're very late getting back to your room, Vex." Vairg's words were prying, head inclined as he peered down to her. "Long sun? You look like shit." He didn't budge an ilm from where he stood, finding some amusement in her frown.
".. So? I was back in time." Vex huffed, head rising a touch. "You don't look any fucking better." She quipped back, arms folding in front of her chest. "You're guarding the wrong door, in case you didn't realise."
Her words were air to him, unbothered for any insults regarding his appearance. "So obedient." He taunts, slowly leaning back to set himself in the way of the door as he rested on it. "I'm precisely where i need to be." His eyes narrow an ilm then, as his grin widens. "You have orders, Vex."
"Says you, who has turned into Grym's personal errand boy. Fucking ass-kisser." Vex's lion-esque tail swatted to the side as she spoke - well aware that such was not the kind of person the Viera was.. Yet if she could rile him up with it, all the better. "And absolutely no care for whatever bullshit it is. I'm going to sleep."
"Better me than the rest of these incompetent whelps. Maybe if you behaved a little better, you'd get better orders. But i doubt it." He continues to lean on the door, knowing full well Vex couldn't move him if she tried. "You're not going anywhere but where you're told, Vex. We found one of ours dead some bells ago. And lucky you, you get to go look."
"Consider, that a 'better' order for you, is absolutely not the same for me." Vex eyed him with obvious irritation, ears pinning back as a sharper exhale leaves her. "Fuck off and give that order to someone who gives a shit about it."
...I’d love to fight her one sun. Heard the things she can do.
But here’s not the place nor time. Wouldn’t want to put her out of commission without Grym’s say-so, and i reckon there’s several people who’d want a piece of her first.
"I'd do it myself, but Grym wouldn't trust you with -my- duty." He said it proudly, rocking his head almost mockingly before it rises again. "You want me to move? Make me, Vex." He stands upwards, gesturing both arms out to the side. "Oh, i forget. You -can't-." A sneer, as he takes a step forth, towards her. "You should show -some- gratitude. How often is it they let you out after dark, hm? You're an ungrateful little shit."
".. And why, the fuck, would I want that asshole to trust me?" Vex hissed. "Did you already forget that I'm not here because I fucking want to be?" She then eyes Vairg, a small flame flickering forth to curl along her jaw in growing annoyance - his latter comment only aggrovating her further. "Eat shit and fuck off, Vairg. I have -nothing- to be grateful for to you fuckers."
"And yet, here you are still." He widens his stance, to peer down to her. "A victim of your own circumstances. That's what -you- are." His index seeks to jab her in the forehead with his words. "If you'd just behave, it would be better for you. Less fun for me, though." The smirk widens, as he considers, stepping aside from her door. "Go on. Go rest. I'm sure when Grym has finished being so... Disappointed... He can find one of your friends to do it, eh?"
"Because you assholes keep bringing me back whenever I try to fucking leave." The jab in her forehead makes her hands ball into fists, as if she had every intention to swing them for the Viera. "You know what would be even better for me? If you fuckwits never grabbed me in the first place." She snarled, tail whacking irritably to the side. "I don't fucking have friends." Despite her words, she did not move for the door - even when Vairg had moved away from it.
"Sure you don't." Vairg moves away only a step, casting a glance over his shoulder. "Then you won't mind if i drag them kicking and screaming to do what you won't, hm?"
Vex twitched, frown deepening. A prolonged silence lingered, before a slow sigh left her. ".. What exactly does he expect me to find?"
...It’s been a successful ploy, recently. Why enact punishment on someone who expects it, when it’s just so much more effective against someone they care about?
...More fun, too. At least for a bit. They don’t usually tend to fight back, not expecting it, and all that. But the panic in their eyes usually makes up for it.
"Don't know. That's your problem. And it will continue to be your problem for some suns yet, because Grym wants you to keep looking, for anyone or anything that might be looking for us." He turns again to half face her, the smug grin never quite falling from his features. "I'll even be nice. When you eventually return tomorrow, i'll try not to make him scream too much." His mismatched gaze moves to to the broken door just a little way from him.
"-- Tomorrow?" Vex turns to stare at Vairg. ".. I've been out all fucking sun! I barely get any fucking sleep because you won't leave him alone!" She gestured to the broken door during her protest, ears pinning - only to twitch as the faintest sound emits from a door across the room, undeniably a growling sound from X'llaya's cell.
"Good to know you're listening. Yes, tomorrow. Give me attitude and i'll make it worse." It was unclear, exactly, who he was speaking to with his latter comment, as his attention snapped to a long unused - And recently reoccupied cell across the room. "Understand?"
That was for the both of them. I can hear X’llaya growling like an animal.
...I wonder if she fights like one, too. But she soon stopped when she heard what i said.
Hmm...
The growling grew silent, then. Vex frowned, casting a glance towards the door. She raised a hand to pinch the bridge of her nose, sighing. ".. A bell of sleep. Can I get that, at the very least?"
Vairg's lips curl into a smirk the very instant the growling stops. "Mm. Maybe. How long do you think it will take for Grym to realise you're not doing as you're told? More than a bell, or less?" Every word was taunting, with every intention to rub her the wrong way. "And then he'd have to punish you. And that would be -very- inconsiderate for your neighbours now, wouldn't it?"
Vex's expression spelled out her unamusement, flames flickering across the bare skin of her shoulders as crimson eyes twitched. ".. I hate every single one of you." She grumbled her words with a deep sigh. "I'm sure he'd be -considerate- enough not to disturb -her- all too much." She jerked a thumb towards X'llaya's cell. "Might even have the common decency to haul me into his office beforehand."
"Maybe!" Vairg responds, with a little too much amusement in his tone, both for the prospect and Vex's visible irritance. "...Want to find out?" He taps his foot on the floor again in some impatience.
...Go on. Find out. Give me some entertainment.
Before i have to entertain myself, somehow.
"As if anyone here gives a flying fuck what I want." She turned fully, then - sighing. "Absolute bullshit.."
"You're right. We don't. Have a nice walk, Vex." Vairg replies, chuckling as he took his seat back against the door, resting his head to the wood.
".. Go fuck yourself, Vairg." Vex hissed, feet setting into motion and beginning to head towards the stairs once more, body slouched in obvious weariness.
...I’m sure there’s something i can think of, if i put my mind to it...

Romain Virgo Excites Fans With U.S. Tour Date Announcement During VP Records’ Record Store Day Celebration
On Saturday afternoon, the VP Records store in Jamaica, Queens, was abuzz with excitement. For Record Store Day 2024, visitors flowed freely through the historic space, combing through rows of CDs and vinyl, meeting and taking photos with Romain Virgo, and enjoying an hours-long sound system session outside. Around 6 p.m., the event culminated with Romain Virgo’s announcement to the large crowd that he would be bringing ”The Gentle Man” tour to the Crown Hill Theatre in Brooklyn on June 7 and 8 – his first shows in the city since last year.
Hosted by Garfield ‘Chin’ Bourne of Sound Chat Radio, the event brought together Reggae fans from all of NYC’s five boroughs – and beyond. It featured sound systems like Bass Odyssey, LP International, Nexxt Level, Super Force, and Dub Electric playing vintage dubplates in VP Records’ parking lot, with artists like Valiant and Tarrus Riley making special guest appearances.
Authentic sound system culture was on full display as the various “sounds” went dub-for-dub against each other – a segment that was followed by Romain Virgo toasting over classic dancehall riddims.
Pictured: Richard Lue (left), Romain Virgo (center), Garfield ‘Chin’ Bourne, Dane Bogle (right)
For hours, fans took advantage of the opportunity to get CD copies of The Gentle Man, Romain Virgo’s new album, signed by the artist. Many were quick to scoop up this year’s exclusive Record Store Day titles: re-issues of Don Carlos’ Pass Me the Lazer Beam LP, The Aggrovators’ Dubbing at King Tubby’s, Vol. 1 and 2, and of Yellowman’s Zungguzungguguzungguzeng.
“The turnout on Saturday was a strong reminder that people still have a deep love for vinyl, Reggae music, and sound system culture. It was a great day for the community, and we look forward to putting on more events like this in the future,” said Chris Chin, President of VP Records. “Thanks to the VP Records team for their contributions to the event’s success, especially Dane ‘Fatman’ Bogle for his coordination of the sound system activities.”
Romain Virgo’s upcoming shows in Brooklyn are part of a longer string of U.S. East Coast concerts, beginning at Toad’s Place in New Haven, CT on June 6 and wrapping up at The Ave Live in Philadelphia, PA on June 9. The tour is in support of his latest album, which features Masicka, Patoranking, Capleton, and Jesse Royal.
More information on the tour will be announced soon.
