faults with the monster high reboots that the monster high movies did better (in my personal opinion!)

monster high itself (as in, the building)

i like the idea of the building as an ancient entity with its own mind: this ancient place that does strange things– which kind of mirrors the ghouls themselves. you really give the audience the power to add their own creativity to it as well. the pool that has unknown mysteries, the catacombs that give monsters the power to travel underground through normie territory. why take that away and replace it with something rather flat and stale that follows a rather cliche/typical storyline of revamping an old building that isn’t in the least bit as visually memorable as its predecessor.

the powers of the ghouls

their unconventional, weird powers from the old movies are realistic: they mirror themselves as monsters, and embrace that individuality. making their powers (or even giving powers: why did laguna need super speed again?) more stereotypical and generic takes away from the message of being your ‘freaky self’. why cant cleo’s superpower be thats shes super rich and an intimidating diva WHY does she need to tie people up with bandages– ???

the drastic clampdown on characters + their significant changes

everyone had a character they could relate to. it was easy to switch up you current favourite and play around with all sorts of different scenarios and backgrounds. it also turns your audience against you: mattel removed so much representation/inclusivity (even though there are issues with racial stereotypes, but that is a post for another time), which is one of the key pillars of the entire franchise. not to mention that a large portion of the guy characters (which i would generally like more of) are gone/replaced…

why… why give clawdeen a male romantic interest (who adds nothing to the story). why goddamnit

i dont mind moanica d’kay as an antagonist, but…

i have to admit that it took me a while before she was a zombie and not a vampire (but the terrifying implications of her being able to turn normies into zombies is pretty cool). but having toralei walk around in the background like she isn’t an iconic character in the franchise feels… weird. why would you not use her character and have an awesome team-up of villains??? (+so monica is not the only villain again in the second movie) = wasted potential EVERYWHERE

also the zomboyz are boring af

the change in aesthetic: to hyper modern and minimalistic

i like the grungy, unconventional style of the older monster high movies. sure, the animation is definitely cleaner and more beautiful in the reboot and the monsters do look closer to 16 (however, im really not a fan of making animated characters look younger to fit their ‘age group’ (*cough cough* barbie), especially since most of the fanbase is older now anyway and would love a more mature approach), but it feels more generic and the bright neon highlights/absence of spookiness really don’t do it for me. it feels like theres no theme connecting all these different factors.

i think the ari being able to turn solid and human is a bit of a stretch? why is she even considered a ghost then if ghosts can just live normally among humans? (even though i assume she doesn’t age) it is a fun plot point though ngl even though im hella salty that they replaced catty noir, an iconic poc, with a british white girl…

(i do acknowledge the massive plot holes in the other monster high movies as well. but don’t fuck up your own lore pls)

TWOK never seen | want to see | the worst | bad | whatever | not my thing | good | great | favorite | masterpiece i think generally speaking, of the tos movies i have seen twok definitely DESERVES its rep as probably... the best written one? i think thats what i hear the general consensus as, yah<333 its very good it truly is.<3 like its sooo solid- and I FEEL GOOFY NOT SAYING MORE ON IT, its just a good fucking movie baby!! genuinely iconic. and tyou kknow that scene fucking made me cry sniff sniff cry. you know it did....

it depends on the mood or how either of you feel that day. he does prefer slow and intimate just a bit more than anything else, but isn’t strongly leaning towards one or the other.

Q = Quickie (Their opinions on quickies rather than proper sex, how often, etc.)

proper sex if he’s able to, only likes quickies when you two are in public and or a time crunch, but they’re definitely not his favorite. If he does have to finish quickly, he’s sure to make it up to you later. they’re surprisingly often though, especially if you drop by his office. you’ll always leave looking way redder than you did before.

Why did you start writing on Tumblr?

I found it easier to gain feedback and find an audience of readers on Tumblr, plus the site was just easier for me to navigate compared to like Wattpad

I write anything I feel like writing, and am open to trying new stuff. I just won’t write smut. I don’t feel comfortable writing or reading it

Who is your favorite person to write about?

I don’t have a favourite person, mainly because I pick people based on who I think would fit a certain concept best. I guess my favourite would be y/n LOL because y/n is in every fic and I put myself into their character.

What inspires you to write?

I just like writing. I get a lot of ideas of stuff I want to write, and as a kid I wanted to be an author, but that obviously isn’t happening anytime soon so I just write fanfics. They’re easier to write because characters are already developed for you, and they don’t have a word limit to how long and short they need to be compared to actual OC fics

What genres/AUs do you enjoy writing the most?

Anything that relates to normal people, I enjoy writing. I like to insert my own experiences and thoughts in my stories so I write scenarios that I can imagine myself in or things I’ve experienced already, stuff like that

What do you hope your readers take away from your work?

I just want them to enjoy what I write. I’d like for my fics to be memorable, but idk if they are lol

What do you do when you hit a rough spot creatively?

I just don’t write. It’s bad but I don’t want to write something that I don’t like so I don’t force myself to write when I don’t feel like it. If it takes me months to get out of that rough spot, then oh well. I don’t want to force myself to do anything that would make me hate writing, since it's one of the only few hobbies of mine.

What is your favorite work and why? Your most successful?

Most successful is murder replay. My favourite is an unreleased fic that I’m still working on. It’s pretty self-indulgent, and I talk about internal conflict with sexuality and not knowing what you really want, alongside being insecure and having mental illnesses. It’s angsty but it’s one of my favourites because of how much of myself I’ve poured into it

Do you think there’s a difference between writing fanfiction vs. completely original prose?

It’s the same. Aside from the character being a real life person, fanfiction is the exact same as prose because it’s completely original ideas and thoughts, completely original sentences, and in general just the exact same as original prose. There’s like no difference.

What do you think makes a good story?

A writer who enjoys what they’re doing. It doesn’t matter your skill level or your language skills, or whatever. If you are passionate about what you write, then it will be evident in the story, and it will be a great story. There’s other things like the story idea and genre, but that’s all dependent on the reader. What I think makes a good story is different from what someone else thinks makes a good story. But in general, it’s the author that makes it good. You can tell if the writer really liked what they were doing, or if they were just writing for the sake of throwing words on a document and then calling it a day.

What is your writing process like?

Get an idea. Make a doc with that idea. Either immediately try and develop details, or leave the idea as is for months, maybe years. After developing the details, write the beginning of the fic, a few scenes I really liked, and then call it a day and never open the document for a few months again lol. Then I wait until I’m in the mood to write for that specific fic, and then I will write as much as I can. Finishing fics is a struggle, I’ve yet to finish my longer ones lol. I have a terrible writing process. The only way I really finish is if I already told my followers i will post it and theyre all waiting for it. Then I feel bad leaving people hanging and so it motivates me to finish. But yeah once I actually finish it, I throw it into grammarly and some other editors, fix stuff up, and publish.

Would you ever repurpose a fic into a completely original story?

Doubt it. Once I’m done with a fic, I’m done. I don’t really want to go back and change anything. Even the longer fics that I love, I get sick of them and so I just dont want to touch them once they're done.

What tropes do you love, and what tropes can’t you stand?

I’m a huge sucker for childhood best friends to lovers lol. I have gushed about this on my blog a few times. Just the fact that you know someone for that long, and even been through arguments and times of not talking to each other, just to still come back to each other, thats real love even if its platonic. I’m just a sucker for that stuff. I also really enjoy anything that I, as a normal person, can relate to so high school AUs, college AUs, platonic AUs, anything real life based. There’s no tropes that I can’t stand, just tropes I don’t find interest in or don’t read much.

How much would you say audience feedback/engagement means to you?

Depends on how long i took to write the fic. If it’s a short piece ranging between a few hundred words to maybe a couple thousand words then I don’t really care much because chances are I didn’t take long to write it. My pieces that are longer than 5k, I care about because those are usually the ones more close to my heart, and the ones I spent way more time than necessary working on. Even just one reader telling me they enjoyed my story makes my day

What has been one of the biggest factors of your success (of any size)?

I know murder replay which is my current biggest story blew up, and I feel like part of it was because of the frequent updating I did. I kept a schedule and made sure to stick with it, even changing parts of the story to fit feedback from readers. Consistency was definitely key, and also engaging with readers. Replying to all their reblogs even if it was just tags they added, constantly expressing how grateful I am, stuff like that because it makes people feel that they’re validated as well. And I guess the general idea/trope of the fic was interesting to people too

Do you think fanfic writers get unfairly judged?

Yeah lol. It’s definitely something I hide from everyone I know in real life because I dont want to be looked down on.

Do you think art can be a medium for change?

Yes!! Art defies boundaries set by language, especially visual art. Stories are a good way to express things to people who don’t understand why something is the way it is, it’s literally what has been done by humans since the start of time. We pass down stories explaining things.

Do you ever feel there are times when you’re writing for others, rather than yourself?

Yeah, sometimes when I felt really burnt out, I felt I had to post an update or something just so that my followers got what they kinda signed up for when they followed me. It was partially just the pressure I put onto myself I guess because my followers are always supportive and understanding when I say I cant post an update. I’d also say in general there’s a part of me that wants to write for others too. I would be lying if I said I only write for myself because that’s not true. The whole reason I write and post is because I want some reader interaction and feedback, and if I truly did only write for myself I wouldn’t be posting.

Do you ever feel like people have misunderstood you or your writing at times?

Not yet! And I hope I don’t have to experience that lol

Do your offline friends/loved ones know you write for Tumblr?

Nope. No one does. It’s something I wanna keep to myself. Even some of my other internet friends don’t know.

What is one thing you wish you could tell your followers?

I purposely send a bunch of messages because I feel bad leaving people on read so I just keep sending hearts and stuff to express my love but also just so that you can end the convo when you feel like.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers who might be too scared to put themselves out there?

Go for it! It might be scary to get criticism, but I promise there are way more nice people on Tumblr than there are mean people. In fact I haven’t even interacted or met with a mean anon or person on here yet. Also the only way to really start is to go for it. I get anxious too every time I post something, even now, and honestly its just a feeling ya know. Its just chemicals in your body. So don’t stress, and if you always need someone to boost your ego and promote your work you have me!

Are there any times when you regret joining Tumblr?

Nope

Midsommar

this contains spoilers for Midsommar

so like, the cult is bad, right? you realise that? like you guys know cults are bad? like i know they were nice to her but you know this is a white supremacist cult thats manipulating mentally ill people to indoctrinate them? like you guys see that right?

i think maybe the scariest experience of Midsommar was seeing how much people completely accepted and justified everything the cult did in order to project into the fantasy of getting that ultimate catharsis; of completely breaking free from your terrible abusive boyfriend and doing so in a way that empowers you. but it’s a joke to pretend that Dani is empowered at all, or that she really wanted this.

Midsommar is about Dani, who suffers a personal tragedy and then travels with her horrible boyfriend and his awful friends (not you josh) to a cult in sweden for their nine-day midsummer festival. the longer they stay, the more dangerous and frightening the rituals become.

it’s kind of impossible to condense this movie to a short description without it sounding insanely stupid; there’s not a quick paragraph that really condenses the scope of this when so much of the movie is dedicated to crafting an incredibly specific mood. the visuals of the film are incredibly detailed and trying to describe them is almost pointless; its a movie that does need to be watched if you want to understand how Aster cultivates tone and pace.

the utilisation of the incredibly limited colour; the way images are blended into pictures so subtly they are almost there only to create a subconscious understanding; the way sound is used to tell the story; the mood the permanent sunny day and clear skies sets in a world where the sun barely ever sets. it all adds something to Midsommar, makes it even more of an anxiety-inducing nightmare of the worst thing that could happen when left alone at a friend’s house.

i think one of the greatest skills in Midsommar’s toolkit is the dialogue; while i wouldn’t call it improv or naturalism, the dialogue is very natural and not-stagey, but laced with double meanings and subtext. i think this kind of incredibly believable dialogue is one of Aster’s strongest talents, and definitely one of the things i enjoy most about his movies.

i didnt really get as much out of Midsommar as i did out of my beloved Hereditary, but it’s hard to say exactly why that is outside of my own personal relationship to Hereditary. something about the scope and scale of Midsommar, the removal from the domestic, makes it a touch less personally evocative to me.

Midsommar is a movie about gaslighting and abusive relationships, but there’s a pretty clear pattern in people recognising that with Dani’s horrible boyfriend and neglecting to see it in the cult. it’s very easy to get wrapped up in the cult’s apparent empathy and understanding of her trauma, but what we’re watching isn’t a genuine love and care for Dani. it’s an indoctrination tactic used to manipulate and brainwash her. all through the movie the cult imitates and pretends to share people’s pain, but they don’t truly experience Dani’s any more than they do that of the old man who survives a suicide attempt, only to be subsequently killed by the cult. they are merely reflecting what she was going through, utilising her pain to guide her to their own ends.

the intention is stated clear as day during the exact same “does he make you feel held? does he feel like home to you?” conversation Pelle and Dani have that people love to reference so much as the heartwarming moment of the movie. Pelle tells Dani that his parents also died, but he never had to be sad because the cult was there for him, and then says that he’s glad Dani came on the trip to sweden because she’s the one he wanted there the most. later, we find out that it was the mission of Pelle and others to bring outsiders to the cult.

the meaning of this is clear; Pelle recognised that Dani was vulnerable, and took it upon himself to recruit her. this is a frequent favourite tactic of cults. the idea he was doing this trip out of the kindness of his heart is absurd; the cult deals in human sacrifice. he knew that he could more easily lead Dani to her death.

pretending Dani is happy at the end of the film is a vast stretch, and pretending that any brief spell of happiness would justify what happened is even more so. right up until the very end she is either terrified or has been drugged, often without her knowledge or consent. she doesn’t know the extent to which innocent people have been murdered. she doesn’t know what the cult have planned, what their history is, what their future is. she can’t even communicate with the vast majority of the cult’s members. to pretend that she has any autonomy in this situation is to ignore how guided and controlled her actions are throughout the movie; she accepts the death of her boyfriend when she is drugged and almost catatonic from trauma, and is that really enough to say that she is happy? that she is docile and compliant?

throughout the film Dani is constantly trying to set up boundaries, to make tiny requests of people for her own wellbeing. time and time again they are ignored and overruled and her attempts to stand up for herself are flattened in the wake of other peoples desires. the cult is no different; none of her actions are borne of her own choices. no one has ever really cared what Dani wants.

i think what is most prominent is that when Dani is becoming the may queen, an image of her sister committing suicide can be seen mixed into the trees in the background. drawing a direct parallel between death and Dani’s adoption as the May Queen feels like a very transparents statement of intent.

what also should be mentioned is the white supremacist nature of the cult; of the victims, the first to die are all people of colour. white supremacist literature is seen around the camp. the cultists talk about how their children are born from specially chosen couples, in what is the most brushed over description of selected breeding and eugenics ive ever heard. every living person is white. it is not accidental or subtle. apparently the directors cut goes into much deeper detail on this idea; i couldnt say myself, i havent seen it. but its obvious in this film that this cult stands for the benefit only of themselves and the preservation of their rituals and past.

in the end the question to me is: was it all worth it? was all the suffering and pain the loss of life worth it, just for Dani to have a smile that expresses nothing but how far she has fallen into her trauma?

one of the things that weighed on me watching the movie was that it was specified that the ritual lasts nine days -- we see maybe five. the other thing is that throughout the movie we are repeatedly shown dozens of photos of past May Queens, but never does a character ever introduce themselves as a past May Queen, never does a character reference other May Queens. after their need is abated, they just seem to vanish. it makes me wonder what happens in the other four days.

1. do you make your bed?

Usually I do, but in the summer my bed is broke, and I cant use the inner storage anymore. X”D

2. what’s your favourite number? 9, that’s my lucky number.

3. what’s your job?

I’m an artist, graphic designer and currently I’m working in a small printer studio by alone. :D I’m making designs, posters, business cards, invitational cards, advertising board, well hardy anything. XD

4. if you could, would you go back to school?

Yes, but just in college. I love in this school everything. Primary schools and high schools not was so fun. Well definitely more terrible to me. :D

5. can you parallel park?

(search after what is this) Oh no, I dont have a driver licence. XD

6. a job you had which would surprise people?

Once, Im working with disabled people. My job was designed plates from handmade papers and... grape letters. :D I loved that job, and the workers too.

7. do you think aliens are real?

Well, I really dont know. Its didnt seems realistic, being alone in the all universe, maybe thats because of the huge distant of between the planets and galaxys. idk :D Maybe, but I dont believe in little green or grey alien. Sorry Mulder. :D

Cheating, lying, disloyal for others, bullying, disrespectful for any other way, treacherous behavior. I never forgive these manners. Never.

My biggest fear about... buttons... X”D really I think thats so gross, any time I see one, or accidentally !TOUCH! one, I literally want to throw up... :X

My other insanity: wasps, high places, wet hair in the sinker. :X And the crowd, I dont like too much people in one place.

The Green Mile - that one of the most powerful movie if I ever saw. That movie was shaping my personality, I see things like never before. And my all time favourite writer is Stephen King, beside Bryan Fuller.

What are some of your favourite anime shows and movies? I'm trying to get into more anime

On paper my favorite anime is Mob Psycho 100. Its an easy recommendation, and imho just straight up one of the best anime ever made. Ive never watched something and been like "wow this is better than mp100". Specifically season 2. Before season 2, Space Dandy was my on paper favorite anime. Space dandy has a raunchier sense of humor that isnt gonna click with everyone, but I love it and like, as art? Its criminally underrated. If you are more familiar with english than Japanese this is also one of the few times when I will STRONGLY reccomend the dub.

Im also like head over heels for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Its a blast. Its so much fun to love jojos. Its a gift that keeps on giving. Its not for everyone, but its for me and i think it radically changed both how I perceive and create art. (Part 3 onward no comment but like. Part 1 and 2? Dub kinda Awful. Nearly stopped me from getting into jojo.)

Those are my current Big Three Things I love. All are artistically unique, high energy, wacky, and over the top so I definitely have a Type. On to some others I enjoy.

Some low key or dramatic shows I enjoy are a Place Further Than The Universe (i cried lmao), Mushi shi (i think ill always wish there were more mushishi. I could watch mushi shi forever), Yuru Camp and Flying Witch (two God Tier aesthetic iyashikei shows), ive only watched the first season so far but im weak for period drama and I really loved Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju s1, Shiki is a good horror anime I didnt expect to hurt me the way it did. Ill put sports anime here and say I have too many Yuri on Ice prints not to include it despite its flaws, and recently really loved Run With The Wind (great cast dynamic). This year Ive really loved the remake of Fruits Basket as someone going into the series p much blind. I need to finish Silver Spoon but the first half is <3 (same author as Fullmetal Alchemist!)

Speaking of FMA for action/adventure FMA Brotherhood is an obligatory recommendation. HunterxHunter is great, and i ADORE the cast of Boku no Hero Academia (and the rest of the show). This year Im enjoying the hell out of Demon Slayer Debated reccing this as it puts the Problematic in Problematic Fav but fuck it I LOVE Kill la Kill and if you can get past the fanservice (and i dont blame you if you cant or just plain dont want to) its so goddamn good. I dont wanna make a new category for these but recently I loved Zombieland Saga. And Ouran High School Host Club is a long time favorite. I also love Yugioh DM but like. Thats not something i generally recommend to people as its not really a great watch experience, its the characters that keep me there, but theres very little time made for th3 Good Stuff (i only pray one day it gets the Brotherhood treatment.) Im leaving out a lot honestly like. Megalobox is dope as hell. I enjoyed Fate/Zero even with like no knowledge or interest in Fate as a whole. Im probably gonna remember something I adore after I post this and be frustrated with myself. Like Anohana! Or Soul Eater! I mainly tried to only count shows ive either finished or finished a whole season of. Like im really loving dr stone but its like 8 episodes in.

MOVIES. Uh. Every Mamoru Hosoda movie Ive seen so far (missing a few) but especially Wolf Children. This director is REALLY good at making me cry.

Recently saw Maquia When The Promised Flower Blooms? 10/10 would sob uncontrollably in the theater again.

I liked a Silent Voice a lot. Especially how it like...visualized the main characters isolation. And that amazing subtle character animation. Really gorgeous movie.

Satoshi Kon as always is worth looking into if you havent, ive only seen Paprika and Tokyo Godfathers at this point and the latter is my favorite of the two.

For some cute kid friendly stuff Arashi no Yoru Ni and You Are Umasou are uhhhhhadorable. Also the little witch academia short movies. If you like those check out the show.

Making this post also makes me realize how much stuff I WANT to watch or need to finish. (Like Red Line and K-on and Psycho Pass and Steins;Gate. All stuff i feel like id recommend if like. Id seen all or even half of it)

I watch a large variety of genres from dark psychological horror to cute girls go camping so I tend to tailor my recs to the person who is asking, but I tried to make this a general purpose collection of favorites lol. Water, but fire always make me wide eyed and curious. definitely curious. but its destructive potential scares me.

yeah, with my mom and her mom. I just didnt know at the time. We do protection spells often.

yup! with my mom and her mom. Its just a family thing we do every time we all get together. I grew up thinking it was completely normal.

My mom says I used to be. I used to dream about natural disasters before they happened as a kid. I dont think im too good anymore. just empathetic.

I dont think I do. If anything, I do feel a feminine energy? dark (like a shadow, not negative) and watery is the best way I can describe it. But its not a human entity. Just energy.

That not everyone believes what you do. And its totally okay! Just maybe dont loudly announce your Ouija board antics with your science teacher in middle school.

I think theres a general way that things can happen. More like a decide your fate book. There are multiple options, it just depends on what you choose.

Meditate, or go to the lake.

quiet, listen to music i like and that help calm me, slightly cool, a breeze is good. the sound of real water flowing from a lake or ocean. recordings of water dont help me. sometimes white noise if theres too much noise

visualization is the easiest thing for me. ive always daydreamed so heavily that itll be like im dreaming with my eyes totally open and tracking.

early mornings, right as the sun is coming up.

I like doing spell work before bed, when the moon is bright enough to light up what im doing

I dont know if it counts as casting a circle? but i visualize a swirling white ball of energy, starting out like a strawberry size in my hands, and every time i breath in, it gets bigger. Its a protection circle. i learned to do it at like?? 3 years old?

outlasting the universe by @/by-moonflower // you know what i'm just gonna link their entire masterlist because all of their works (even the short drabbles) are just literary masterpieces. the way they write makes you feel so alive?? and everything just speaks for itself and is so authentic. they make you feel like you're wandering amidst a ghibli film, periof. authentic is the best word i can use to describe their work and this fic is just the definition of beautiful.

bluff and nonsense by @/thepixelelf // THIS FIC. it's my go to rec overall. it was so memorable had such good flow and just genuinely so genuine?? i have no other words to describe it, it's just so ,,, lovely. the plot takes you on a journey and it's woven together so seamlessly.

Influential Filmmakers

Godfrey Reggio

Koyaanisqatsi (1982)

Reggio is famously known as an auteur for his style and imprint within the experimental film world, often producing poetic imagery that projects an exceptionally moving impact to his audience. I consider his documentary film 'Koyaanisqatsi': life out of balance, to be one of the greatest non-narrative films I've seen as I felt largely impacted by its premise and will most definitely make use of its storytelling techniques as inspiration. The film does very well at showing the bittersweet contrast between nature and the civilisation that occupies it, accompanied by a transcendent soundtrack composed by the great composer, Phillip Glass.

Ron Fricke

Chronos (1985)

Similarly to Godfrey Reggio, Ron Fricke’s work tends to regularly consist of the disparity between nature and civilisation. However, he is much more hands-on with his cinematography, for the most part adopting the use of time-lapse photography. Fricke tends to incorporate a stir on playback speeds for effect. In particular, with time-lapse sequences displaying American's busy with their day to day life, planted firmly in the centre of the rat race and unaware of the world rotting around them. Though it's still early days for the planning of my short film, I find his cinematography to be incredibly mesmerising and would love to apply the use of a time-lapse into my film.

Toshio Matsumoto

Shift (1982)

During the 1960s, Matsumoto was the pioneer for Japanese experimental cinema, paving the way for directors alike. He trailed towards documentary film-making which is where he found his love for another expressive type of docu-film such as 'Neo Documentarism' which involves a refusal of the traditional essence of documentary films. He is one that would divulge the inner frame of mind and subjectivities of Japanese society. Much of similarity to the American filmmakers, he liked to show the harsh truths of reality, an idea I would love to focus my film around. What I like most about his film 'Shift' would be the play on multiple split screens and how they form together in a synchronised motion to form one image, almost leaving the audience stuck in a trance of watching frames form together. Despite the constant movement and pan of the shots it slightly hard to follow what is going on, it's most definitely an enchanting and unique visual technique.

Mika Taanila

Optical sound (2005)

Taanila, a filmmaker and visual artist located in Helsinki, would be classed as a filmmaker who is halfway between creating classic documentary film and more experimental cinema. In his short film ‘Optical Sound’, he transports the audience to a subversive world of mechanical symphonies, using a beautiful blend of industrial sounds from a 1960s printer. I feel like this is done to highlight the beauty of the day to day industrial and mechanical sounds that surround us. What initially drew me to liking his short film was the therapeutic close-up shots of the mechanical items, as well as the element of filmic synaesthesia. I believe this helped create rhythm through editing, to project an overall desired effect of seeing sound. The focus on technology and sound is potentially an idea I could work with as I love the idea of experimenting with the synchronisation of different sounds and shots, bringing them together to create something both visually and audibly stimulating.

James Benning

One Way Boogie Woogie (1977))

"Since I started making films, I've always tried to open a new narrative space from the juxtaposition of sound and image, or text and image - how the spectator experiences them, how they quote each other.”

James Benning is an American avant-garde filmmaker who has had a healthy career dating back to the early 70s. His work consists of exceptionally long takes and stationary camera work. In his film ‘One Way Boogie Woogie’, it captures 16mm long shots in the life of Milwaukee's industrial valley. Each shot tends to have flat, and squarely framed compositions with a 1:1 aspect ratio. This is most commonly used in portrait shots to pull the person/surroundings closer to the viewer. In his film, I believe this is done to focus the attention solely on what's going on within the centre of the frame. In particular, the locals living their day to day life in Milwaukee and what unfolds as the shot lingers. While each shot is fairly simple unlike most experimental cinematography, I perceive this is done in quite a captivating way as the whole frame is in great detail, and visually the over-saturated block colours bring life to an aged town. Generally, I like the idea of static shots, as the viewer can have the option of what to look at and being able to focus just on one thing. This has given me the idea to have a play with aspect ratio.

Peter Tscherkassky

Outer Space (1999)

Although I’ve only just discovered him, Tscherkassky’s work is one of my favourites. Hailing from Austria and certainly being a well-respected avant-garde filmmaker, he is most well known for his use of solely working with ‘found footage’. Bringing together a faint story through intense, fractured visuals. Specifically, in his latest work such as Outer Space, he takes footage from a pulp fiction horror called ‘The Entity (1982). With this he adapts the footage, adding layers of faintly exposed visuals that flicker in an erratic motion creating a feeling of sensory overload, leaving the viewer quite unsettled. Essentially, what I liked about his work was his use of layering footage and how he's able to blend it all together for the desired effect. An idea that I could potentially use.

Micheal Robinson

Light is Waiting (2007)

What I found interesting about Robinson's work is how he's able to project a fine blend of emotions like nostalgia, terror, humour and hysteria simultaneously through such dreamlike visuals. In particular, his short film ‘Light is waiting’. I enjoyed the slow tempo of the shots and audio as it most definitely contributed to the overall ‘dreamlike’ feel of it all. It's almost like it evolves from a good dream to a bad one. As time progresses the visuals of abstract colour and the tempo of the audio intensifies, leaving the viewers feeling almost like they're stuck in a hypnotic trance.

Marie Menkan

Lights (1966)

“There is no why for my making films. I just liked the twitters of the machine, and since it was an extension of painting for me, I tried it and loved it. In painting I never liked the staid and static, always looked for what would change the source of light and stance, using glitters, glass beads, luminous paint, so the camera was a natural for me to try—but how expensive!”

Menken is a well-respected avant-garde filmmaker from the 60s, who’s very well known for her unique camera work and silent movies. What drew me to her work was the films ‘lights’. I felt as if I was transported to a mystical world, following a ray of beautiful beams that erratically jumped and swirled across the frame. Despite there being no audio, I feel that this helps us to focus our attention purely on the elegant visuals that were supplied. Not only is this one of my favourites, but this has definitely influenced my final idea as it left me so mesmerised. However, I haven't quite finalised what I plan to shoot yet.

Norman McLaren

Synchromy (1971)

McLaren is best known for being a well-respected innovator of early animation. Finding new ways to approach this, he developed old techniques essentially forming new and approved methods, that are still used in animation today. Specifically techniques such as hand-drawn animation, pixelization and graphical sound. In his short film ‘Synchromy’, it consists entirely of graphical sound with each line/colour corresponding to a musical note. This is what drew me to being captivated by his work, I feel that it gives the audience a hybrid experience into the world of synesthesia. Being able to visually see the sound in addition to hearing it. A technique that I will most definitely try to implement deeming I can provide pleasing visuals for the audience.

Hollis Frampton

Excerpts (1984)

“Cinema is the Last Machine. It is probably the last art that will reach the mind through the senses”

Frampton Jr was an iconic figure in the Avant-garde scene, firstly trying a career in poetry and then moving onto photography, he later settled on film which is where he found his true passion for means of expression. His work often transcends into a world of colour, movement and bokeh visuals which are juxtaposed together perfectly to create a visually overwhelming experience. However, beneath the exterior of visuals, there are emotions being lightly conveyed. Editing wise this short film has given me a few ideas on what i could poteniallt try out. I believe it helped shape an overall idea for how I want to transition through my film.

Stan Brakhage

The cat of the worms green realm (1997)

Notoriously known for being one of the most admired icons in American avent-garde film, he paved his way into the world of cinema during the early 60s. He begun to stir away from the conventional renditions of film, to which he then set about to craft an arsenal of obscure and visually serene short films which are still watched and discussed on a wide scale today. Over the stretch of 50 years in the industry he’s made about 350 films, i’ve found it pretty hard to put a finger on which is my favourite. However the one thats definitely caught my attention is ‘The cat of the worms green realm’, for me as an individual the most fundamental element in film-making is captivating the audience with interesting visuals. In this short film the weaving of phosphorescent bright colours contrasting with the dark forms of leaves left me visually intrigued.

Hans Richter

Rhythmus 21 (1921)

“It is not the natural movement of film that gives the objects their expression, but the artistic movement, that is to say, a rhythmical movement regulated by itself in which variations and pulsations form a part of the artistic design.”

Despite being one of the oldest artists i’ve looked into, Richter’s work is way ahead of its time. Hailing from Berlin he had deep links to the ‘Der Blaue Reiter’ and cubism movement during the early 19th century. Stirring away from the traditionally strict and pretentious groups he moved onto what is considered as the beginning of the early experimentation of abstract film making. In his short film ‘Rhythmus 21′ it embraces the use of stop motion as well as forward and backwards printing to produce a constant flux of rectangular and square shapes. Which these flow in and out with a perfectly unexpected synchronicity. What i like so much about this short film is how its so deceptively simple, as i believe it’s much more than just a constant flow of shapes fading it and out. By simplifying his composition and using basic shapes he was able to diverge his focus onto what he believed to be a more important element which was movement, timing and light. He wanted to express emotion through the forms moving in relative motion to one another. I will definitely consider using influences from this to shape my final idea

Oskar Fischinger

An optical poem (1938)

Born in 1900 Oskar Fischinger begun his career as a musician and architect in his hometown a few miles from the city of Frankfurt. However after realising where his true passion lied he descended into the world of abstract animation, after moving to Berlin during the very early days of cinema. His short films grew very quickly in popularity due to its unconventional style that took the world by storm. His use of auroral geometric shapes in this short film ‘ An optical poem’ and how it perfectly flows in sync to each musical note, is what intrigued me to keep watching. I believe this gives the audience a perfect representation of auditory-visual synesthesia. In which a rhythmic sound/music is able to trigger a visual projection. Not only is this something that i believe will be very fun to do, but it will be interesting to experiment with different coloured lights and shapes to create something visually exciting.

Malcolm Le Grice

Marking time (2015)

“It is clear that the growing predominance of simple geometric forms and angular planes in the art of this period reflects the exterior shape of the mechanical world. But there is also a clear trace of the artists’ fascination with the dynamic problems of speed, change and fragmentation themselves, reflecting the new experience of travel and communication.”

Le Grice is widely known for taking his viewers on a visual journey of luminous colours and continuous movement of multi-screen footage. In the early days of his career his desire was to be a painter, although he soon delved into avant garde film-making during the mid 60′s, it is clear he still wanted to incorporate his love for art through the use of colour. As he believes ideas surface from the emotions a viewer can take from colour, image sound and movement. Unlike the film-makers ive mentioned previously he wanted to delve further, experimenting with every element of film-making rather than having the end goal to shape the experimentation around particular style. Despite there being many different processes to how they made there films, majority of the film-makers i’ve mentioned previously have gone down the similar route of abstract style’s to which i would like to do as i greatly admire there work. Also it gives me the opportunity to have a play with different forms of colour and tones as i’m determined to use these influences to create something captivating for the audience.

Micheal Snow

La Région Centrale (1971)

Micheal snow is a Canadian artist who’s had a lengthy career related to a range of films, instillations, sculptures and photography. In his short film ‘La Region Centrale’ he leaves the audience mesmerised by the different hypnotic camera movements, which the human eye would be unable to capture. Almost giving the audience a sense of an outer-body experience. Although snow provides us with the same landscape, each time its from a completely different perspective and presented to us in a slightly different lighting. To achieve this affect of movement he used a remote controlled camera rig thats able to spin and turn in every possible direction. This left me immersed into the desolate landscape, wanting to find out if there was any slight differences to the rocky scenery as the film went on. Another element i found fascinating was the strange electronic soundtrack thats used, as there is an complete absence of technology i believe this was used to emphasise its distance between civilisation and the mountainous existence in these shots. wanted to take up aerospace technology, but decided to go for his real passion instead

got in through rolling admission, didnt have to face the stress of college entrance examinations

however a very talented actor, able to shed tears in 30 seconds

havent had his first kiss despite acting since five,, and people are shook lol

has looks crafted by the acting gods, visuals made for acting

able to pull off both bad roles and good roles

honestly very friendly and humble young actor, seniors are certain he will make it big in the industry one day

will greet classmates and lecturers good morning and bid them goodbye

lowkey enjoys classics like romeo and juliet, lord of the flies, julius caesar, animal farm

does well in the prose section in tests because he reads widely

actually a well all-rounded student, perfect 4.0 gpa in every semester

took up ballet in high school oops and hence knows every scene in ballet classics like sleeping beauty

sings and raps decently, a good dancer too,, a literal golden child lol

but below the perfect boy surface,, jihoon is an avid gamer who always occasionally stays up till the wee wee hours of the night to play games

like overwatch sorry guys that’s the only game i know

sometimes will arrive to class late, hair in a mess and last night’s pyjamas

but at the end of the day he does well in everything without even trying so the lecturers just let him be

you didn’t even know why you took up theatre,, maybe its because you scored an A in literature during your college entrance exams

communications was too controversial for you anyway

you had zero to little acting experience, the only experience you had was pretending to be sick in school

like jihoon, for the prose section of tests you would score full marks most of the time

but drama section was your pitfall

not that you couldn’t act, but you had a fear of being on camera

selfies with friends are fine, but you just don’t like your pictures being taken in general

one day, your lecturer gave out an assignment, apparently it’s paired work and your partner has already been chosen beforehand

you liked pair work, and honestly one of the only ways you can pull up your grades for the drama section

once you received your assignment, you read the name below yours in bolded itallic,

you sighed, you were afraid of being a burden to the golden student, since he already has secured his own distinction anyway

you were acquaintances with jihoon, but not that close to be friends either

“y/n!” jihoon settled into his seat beside you, “i’m glad we are partners, at least you won’t be like some of the girls in this class…”

you smiled weakly, thankful that he didn’t have a bad impression of you already, “what about them?”

“they always wanted to add a kiss scene in the plot, just to kiss me, its just, ugh.” this was the first time you’ve seen jihoon getting annoyed, and you found it cute honestly

“that’s gross, but don’t worry, i wont make you kiss me, i don’t think you’d want to either.” you patted his back, and you swore that you saw a tinge of hurt in jihoon’s eyes momentarily

“thanks y/n.”

for the first 2 days, you and jihoon practically breezed through the prose section, sharing your favourite scenes of the classics

“romeo and juliet was a good ending”

“no, they should’ve ran away with each other”

despite conflicting ideas the both of you worked well together and became much closer than before

at first you thought jihoon was a little bit of a tsundere, but the more you knew him, the more goofy he seemed

like how he liked penguins, and has a few penguin stuffed toys on his bed

and you also learnt that jihoon used to do classical ballet in high school, which was lowkey a surprise for you

then came the drama section, the both of you decided on romeo and juliet

wow im so basic sorry guys

you didn’t force jihoon to kiss you too, so the both of you just settled with jihoon putting his thumb in between the both of your lips

or almost kissing

bahbam y’all “kissed”

jihoon told you it was a method actors use so that they don’t really kiss the actress,, and he pulled out that card for all of the girls who wanted to kiss him lol

he even was super sweet about the whole thing, asking if you were uncomfortable and stuff

you always said you wouldn’t but your heart would race whenever he did a tiny bit of skinship like hugging or holding your hand

ultimately, it was just for the grades, right?

wrong.

jihoon had the biggest crush on you ever since the both of you were in the same class

he was just scared of approaching you, scared that you would think he’s trying to get into your good books

so he was really excited when the lecturer announced that you were his partner

and when you said “i don’t think you’d want to either” to the kiss he was lowkey slumped bc it meant to him that you thought of jihoon as a normal friend and not something more

so on the day of the drama showcase, jihoon could sense your nervousness

usually you were ok but today you werent

“what’s up y/n? are you not feeling well?”

“i have a phobia of being on camera,” you wrung your hands together, “sorry jihoon, i’m bringing down our grades–”

“no, y/n, look at me.” jihoon made you face him, his features gleaming under the light, “we’ll overcome this together. i promise.”

“how?”

jihoon then swooped down and kissed your lips, which definitely took you aback

“w-what”

“just imagine the camera isn’t there, and there is no one in the classroom except us.” jihoon smiled, as if the kiss didnt happen

you were definitely calmer than before, weirdly, and nodded.

when it was you and jihoon’s turn, he gave your hand a small squeeze

it went pretty smoothly, with no camera-fright for the first time

until the kiss scene, jihoon actually kissed you for real

and the whole class was shooketh bc park jihoon,, kissing a girl for the first time?? wowzers

in the end, both of you got your As and you got yourself a boyfriend out of it too

honestly jihoon is more of a homebody than you think

he would want to stay at home rather than go out on dates

so he would invite you over to his dorm, to watch movies or just cook for him lol

sometimes he would ask you to play games with him too, but you’d fail

he would be somewhat addicted to his games too, so you have to get through all means and ways to get his attention back on his work

dont be surprised if he calls you at like 3am telling you hes hungry

and you only read it the next morning

“did you see the message i sent you?”

“no…?”

“i sent it at 3am and it said 2 ticks…”
