nobody is ready for me to expose The Cold Truths of the economic backbone of the monster hunter universe.
your palico? they're a slave, my man. you think "meowster" is a cute little nya-nya term of affection? not on your life. it got beaten into each and every one of them.
you think theres a reason why the palicos never do anything without significant supervision? you think theres a reason why there's hostile Felyne societies all over the world? oh, except for the place where the humans and wyverians aren't present in any real force, just coincidentally. but you don't think there's a reason for that little detail, do you?
I do.
It's a dark world out there, buddy. Think about that the next time your Palico pushes you out of a stun. And think about it the next time your Palico pushes you into a monster's attack, too. We deserve so much worse.

For part 2 of catching feels. Kyle now know the rider basically has no one and has tsukino keep tabs when he hears the rider is going after a nergigante (with cheval) he not only climbs and finds the secret wyvern village. But is relieved to see and hear the rider okay.
That is until he hears the rider yelling at cheval (honestly cheval was fixated on the nergigante not the rider from what it seems in game.) and then the rider sees kyle and insults cheval by saying “at least kyle’s better AND HE’S A HUNTER AND I RATHER TEAM UP WITH HIM!!” before dragging kyle away to help them find the nergigante nest for its egg. (Just a lil hc that nergigante was only a pain due to trying to get extra food cause its partner was dead. Thats why it was causing issues and the rider understood but cheval didn’t and they ended up killing it due to cheval constantly going after it without understanding it.)
You're right about my boi Cheval, man was more obsessive. And I love how long it took them to realize that the ELDER DRAGON EATER was after an elder dragon XD like, ever hear of Zorah Magdaros and the Nergigante
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Catching Feelings (Part 2)
You were still on Kyle's mind when he reaches Nua Te to see you, and whilst there, you drag him on another adventure. But wait, why does it make him feel weird?
Tumblr media
Ever since he found out you had no family, Kyle has been jumping from thought to thought. He didn't quite know what to think of the situation as a whole, but all he did know was that he felt different around you. The hunter couldn't quite explain it. All he did know was that he felt a sudden emptiness when you guys parted ways after the Rage-Rayed Mizutsune.
But Kyle was just glad he's reached an understanding when it comes to Ratha. He gets it now why you feel so attached to the monster.
It still bothered him that you had no family. In fact, Kyle couldn't even focus on the pits because of it. It got to the point where Tsukino had to be in charge of things because he was too busy thinking about you.
That's why he's heading to the secret wyverian village in the mountains, Nua Te.
"I got intel that Y/N is heading after a Nergigante-along with another rider." The palico told him with a grin after seeing Kyle's relieved face.
"That's not a monster that should be taken lightly. I'm going to help Y/N." Kyle said without hesitation, and Tsukino put her paws on her hips.
"Is that the only reason you are going-or do I detect a hint of jealousy?" Tsukino teased him and Kyle balled his fists by his sides while his face turned slightly red.
"Shut up."
Kyle certainly wasn't worried about you having a companion. In fact, he was glad that you weren't on your own right now. But there was a feeling in his chest that irked him when he knew that your other companion was not him, but rather a stranger. It was one of the main reasons that he was climbing up the cliffside to a village that would most likely throw him out. He needed to know and see that you were okay.
And true to what he was thinking, the wyverians were very cold to him and Tsukino. However, the felyne was very quick to tell them that they knew you. And somehow, they seemed to ease up a little.
"Where do you think Y/N is?" Kyle asked and Tsukino shrugged. Honestly, you could be anywhere outside the village looking for the elder dragon. In fact, you could be in the middle of fighting it right now.
"You are impossible to be around!"
"Found Y/N." Tsukino said with a grin when your voice echoed from the village entrance. The hunter and palico duo were quick to rush that way to find you, angry (kind of like how you got with Kyle before) and shouting at another older red-haired male, who looked equally annoyed. Kyle guessed that this was the other rider you were working with, or trying to.
"Me? I'm just trying to help you! Your selfish obsession with this monster is hurting Ratha!" The man said back to you.
"You mean YOUR obsession! It's you who's tracking the monster, not me! I could care less about where that Nergigante was! I didn't give it a thought before it stood in my way to help uncover Ratha's secret!" You shouted back, roughly poking the older man in the chest. In fact, your actions made Kyle feel rather proud.
"That monster never needed to be slain. It was just following its instincts. It...it had a family." You said, backing away a bit and putting a hand over your heart. The other rider, hesitated a bit before looking at the wall.
It was then that Kyle decided to make his presence known.
"Kyle!" You said happily, and for some reason it made his heart jump for joy. The (rather handsome) red-haired rider looked over at the hunter with a curious expression. However, you shot the older male a glare and ran over to Kyle.
"Well Cheval, I'd rather team up with Kyle, and guess what, he's a hunter!" You shouted at your companion, who simply rolled his eyes and walked off. But you paid him no mind. Instead, you grabbed Kyle's hand and ran back out into the wilds.
Kyle didn't understand, but all he could focus on was your hand touching his.
"So...you want to tell me what we're doing?" Kyle asked. You had dragged him out of there so fast that neither Tsukino nor Navirou had time to follow. Only Ratha was glued to your hip and followed you both.
"We're looking for a Nergigante nest." You explained simply while folding your arms and looking away. Kyle didn't need to say more. He knew that you wanted to save that egg because if you didn't...then the egg would...
"I don't know how much you overheard, but that was Cheval, the rider helping me. We just got into a disagreement." You explained, peering through foliage and avoiding large monsters. Kyle was looking around too, eyeing crevices in the rocks for signs of elder dragon activity.
"Sounded more than a disagreement." Kyle said and you shrugged.
"He just didn't understand the Nergigante. It was just hunting more because it had a family to feed...called me obsessed over it while he was the one hunting it. It was just..." You huffed, showing your irritation.
"Why would he think you're obsessed?" The hunter asked and your walking slowed as your eyes glanced down.
"It's the same monster that killed my grandfather..."
You could practically hear the breeze running through the valley due to the silence both of you held. Honestly, Kyle didn't know how to respond to that. He's come close to losing someone, but he's never had to...comfort...another person like this. However, his instincts acted out.
He gently patted your shoulder and you smiled softly at him.
But before you could say anything else, Ratha sensed something and ran past both of you. Alarmed, the two of you ran after him to see that Ratha found the nest you were looking for. But the most alarming thing of all was the already dead Nergigante corpse that was laying beside the nest. Kyle widened his eyes and your hand went to your heart.
"So...my hunch was right. That other monster was the only one able to get food for its family. Its partner had been..." You shook your head and walked up to the nest, taking an egg after patting Ratha on the head and praising him for finding this.
"You gonna make it your monstie." Kyle asked and you nodded.
"This Nergigante is a part of my family now. No one should be alone." You said while looking at the egg and walking off, Ratha following. Kyle watched you leave before starting to follow, again more of these thoughts were in his head.
You were raised alone which is why your monsties were so important to you. You didn't want any other living thing to go through what you went through. Because of this, monsters were an important part of your life. They act on instinct, and don't leave or fight with you if you have a disagreement with them.
Well, Kyle's going to walk right up to Cheval and tell him that he can leave now. You have a hunter by your side.
And for some reason, the very thought filled Kyle with much pride.

Palicoes!
Outside of Witcher 3, I also play Monster Hunter since it first came out and am always a Great Sword user, sometimes switching to Insect Glaive.
But aside from the fun and hard combat, I love it for its feline companions called the Palico (I bet thats a mash between Pals and Calico). They used to be just Felynes (I miss that).
So here are some Nintendo Switch shots of the cats that caught my attention in Monster Hunter Rise. BTW... those two cats on the last photo are my palicoes: Doregarray and Morvran :D

Ah, some additional informaton:
-we're not told if the wyverian has a different greeting of sorts, but the implication was that he was going to shake our hand before immediately getting distracted by his work.
(In monster hunter stories 2, they DID play a bit with that. The protagonist is a Rider from a isolated rider village attempting to try and find piece within the local hunters guild. Many from that village including the protagonist would greet others by touching their faces, but this was not something other characters would do with them. )
We were specifically tasked with saving him/ensuring his safety, so he effectively was throwing our work away in order to keep studying the field work. Which to be fair, was a big deal as it was researching something that was dangerous, and could potentially have killed/injured a lot of people if ignored.
(This also directly tied into the main female character's story. Early on they frequently stated many self-sacrificial things like 'laying down their life for the cause'. Something that went over my head as a player, as it was usual 'heroic self-sacrifice talk. However in game, it was something which Greatly bothered the Admiral and the Village Elder. The Elder sent us to help out in part to make amends for not assisting in their crisis 50 years ago, and later was also implied to help this person see more value in themselves then just their legacy. protecting their home is good but they also have to protect themselves! His actions of basically rejecting our help/refusing to return to safety basically teaching her thats how others must see her when she was being self-sacrificial. Not as something noble, but as something annoying/alarming!)
-The Wyverians as a whole aren't coded as autistic, I think. In Rise alone, there are the Twin Quest Maidens (One with a bubbily personality described as 'like the sun', and the other being a more stern/serious personality, described as 'like the moon, and enjoys staying indoors). There's the Guild Leader (Who effectively is the protagonist's Father figure of sorts, besides the Village elder. They talked about changing the protagonist's diapers and effectively cared for them), theres the Two Merchants in the game, and a Doctor that you needed to find. None who really portray any autistic traits, nor are they ever called annoying. Wyverians are also stated to be kind of rare in general, and there are significantly fewer then humans.
In general all other people refer to him as annoying/irritating/eccentric, but they also take note that he's smart, and respected as well. The things he built were impressive, and he's generally pretty correct about his musings. (Its worth noting that the series is post-apocolyptic, with steam engines being the peak of technology. In Sunbreak they actually have a tiny mining train, which is exclusively used to transport materials that were mined across a very small area. )
The only other intelligent race seen frequently, are the Lynians, which themselves are split into a couple of different groups. Half being a race of small ape-like creatures that are often depicted as primitive creatures, who often don't get along with humans. Which is uh, possibly problematic to say the least. Though there are none in rise, so I don't know how well they handled this in the games they show up as.
The other half are cat-like creatures called Feylines, who kinda go into a few different groups themselves as they have different shared cultures. (But effectively they were curious about humanity, taught themselves how to speak, and work alongside humans as equal partners. Every hunter effectively has a Cat-person Buddy called a Palico, and many feylines work as Housekeepers, sailers, merchants, mercenaries, Doctors, researchers, Ect. They mostly also talk in Cat Puns. (Also they're the ones driving the really tiny mining train. A feylines is upset that they can't ride the train. Like I just wanted to establish that these are very tiny trains being driven by a tiny cat person that at their tallest is roughly up to your knees. They're adorable. )
Basically if he were a Feyline then it probably would have been more concerning to me, because they are much more distinctly not-human then the wyverians, and you do things like pet the cat's head or play with them with little cat toys.
I am highly interested in the Feyline Train omg
But thank you for all the supplementary information! This does make it sound like he's more autistic-coded than not, so it's definitely a "him" thing and not a "these people are alien" thing, which is reassuring. It sounds like he's just neurodivergent!

One thing my roomate really misses from world was coming up with Builds, he feels you can't make as many in rise as World could.
Dude had a Hammer build for every element and status with the ice one being the strongest with 55% affinity, 1498 attack, and 1190 elemental. Now we have one Hammer build in rise instead of i think eight. :'D
If you ever encounter someone Named Nachtigal who looks like a edgy pirate with a doggo named Nightingale in the okami layered gear or with a palico named Salem in the Multi-tailed fox looking layered gear thats us!
Rise's thinner base monster roster seems to make for a little less variety in the gear though i do appreciate the new World-style skill system making it easier to mix sets and builds than in old gen. Part of it I think is also the smaller variety in weapon tree since most of the time people make builds around specific weapons/elements or skills. That said I have at least a few variety builds per weapon I've picked up even if I don't use them all equally and some are favored more than others
Hopefully Sunbreak's release will open the doors to some more fun in the armory :D
In the meantime, Happy Hunting!

yeah the armor itself might need to be updated as the game goes on. You can also set multiple equipment sets, which is useful for when you're grinding certain areas.
The HR random starting location thing is also given an explanation in World, and that mechanic completely absent in Rise. (In World you get to the field by riding on a little winged dinsoaur called a winddrake. But it can be dangerous or monsters could attack/threaten you, so sometimes the little wingdrake drops you off somewhere random. This is kind of now the explanation in all older games. In 4u the big problem is theres exactly 1 weird, impossible to reach location on every map that you can randomly start on in high rank. This area is filled with crystals and items that get used for special gear/equipment. But you have to be lucky enough to roll that, as well as being able to complete the quest!
It's also possible you'll start the quest and be thrown into the place with the monster, so hopefully you're prepared!
The map item also starts to become a double edged sword. If you KNOW the map you can just have a extra item slot for healing. I think there are some locations you can only find/access if you're holding a map. But that may just be true of older games. Its just something i heard of for a specific map.
Monsters only go in certain map routes, so you don't need paintballs and can follow by their shadow/knowing what map places to look by having fought them enough times. Though paintballs are FAR less annoying/better to use. I personally recommend them, I just wanted to bring that up as 'the game's kinda gives you a do you really need this item or can i do without it' feeling as you go on.
Some of the monsters also have some uh. mechanics that you can use to cause yourself more suffering if you so wish. Rathian and Rathalos will know if you've taken their eggs and will hunt you down on any egg quests where they re on the map. They will be enraged. However, this also means you can basically trap them to one map screen because you can just take a egg every time they leave.
The attack/defense up items I want to stay stacks with the Caravan Boosts or the Equipment Status boosts, but i don't know if the last two stack with each other. I think it might only take the highest boost, but i'm not 100% sure on that. (and even then once you cart thats it, its back to whatever your armor gives you only.)
If i remember right doing multiplayer quests can in fact raise your caravan cook's skills. (I specifically recall feeling frustrated because I have to get to a certain point to unlock high rank expeditions, and alcohol is a food type that just isn't available until you unlock it in multiplayer mode!)
I actually did the Rathian egg quest and it was a lot easier than I thought. Granted, I did end up enraging the Rathian after the first egg delivery, but I managed to kill her pretty quickly before going for the second egg.
As for armor sets, I'm currently farming for a full Gravios set. I'm hoping I'll be able to add an attack boost via Attack Gems, but I'm not sure if the Gravios set has enough slots for that. If it doesn't, I can just get the Demondrug/Fighting Fortre Palico boost if I need a boost.
And yes, I'm pretty sure the Canteen/potion effects/Palico effects stack because I was able to get ~170 defense with a Canteen and Palico boost alone, which is about 50 extra points of defense. I'm pretty sure the same is with attack boosts, but I haven't really had to rely on attack boosts all that much in low rank.

As much as I love MH, I 100% agree that it would be quite nice to see more scary looking ones like Khezu, and I think the others named Gigginox? (Although to be honest Rajang and Furious Rajang are also terrifying in their own way. I dread each time I have to fight that angry super saiyan monkey. Especially in World. ;w;)
Other then the lack of scary monster monsters, I hope that your enjoying the series. ^w^ Are you looking forward to rises first update coming out soon though? I'm really excited to see my favorite Elder Dragon coming back.
God i know i just called it a Fucking Monkey but the absolute FEAR i felt when it turned yellow and attacked me was unparalleled; i dont ANYTHING in the game instilled an immediate flight response into me. Whats worse was, at the time, i was hunting something that didnt require thunder resistance, so i was like “ maybe i can knock two birds w one stone; see the ? Monster, maybe fight it and get the info, then quickly fight the super weak monster i came here to fight”, so i had armor that had -12(?) thunder resistance. Of all fucking things this monkey couldve had smh and ur telling me theres ANOTHER level of Rajang...
Other than that tho i AM enjoying this game! I like games that make u grind for materials and armor and weapons, and theres the added bonus of it NOT requiring an online connection, and not have microtransactions. No making things impossibly hard to farm for to incentivize paying money to speed up the process , which is SO nice and so refreshing. I heard there was an update for this game, but seeing how i dont really have like. ANY mh knowledge, i dont think seeing a trailer or breakdown of the upcoming content will do anything for me u_u So im content to just be surprised and see what happens :0
