So many folks on here are from a country that's decided to rely on deterrence theory in criminal justice, but to most people that has just turned into "people deserve punishment if they break a rule", and combined with slavery being a legal thing to do with prisoners, as well as taking away their ability to live normal lives after prison (not to mention the state of the working class and their not being treated as people with needs that matter, plus unionbashing), you live in a place where it's become normal for humans to be disposable. Rehabilitation is a foreign concept. Of course you're all scared of doing anything anyone might perceive as wrong. All your society knows to do when someone makes a mistake is put them in a cage for the rest of their lives, hiding the problem for a couple of decades, of course it's difficult to be a person!

Some magical countries out there try a rehabilitative theory of criminal justice. I think it helps to know that if you were ever to fuck up in some way, what would happen is that you'd get help to figure out how to not fuck up again, and society would work on reparations for victims where possible. Your life isn't forfeit. That makes having healthy discussions about change and responsibility feel very different, because responsibility doesn't mean you get the electric chair if you step out of line, it means maybe you'll have to get therapy and study while confined in a place that's frankly better than most student housing nowadays. The punishment isn't the point.

Anyway, my point is that I think this influences internet behavioral patterns a lot. I think this is why some of us react to bad things by unfollowing, and others try to crucify and prosecute individuals. Fundamental cultural differences in perception of justice.

I guess I should have expected a character like him, that's both deeply poetic in his speech and courtly in his upbringing, would come to idealize a chivalric romance a bit, and translate his feelings on/of love to an element of courting that's as ritualistic and processional as ballroom dancing, but sometimes just realizing the obvious can really knock you off your feet for a second

like. just like how there is almost a blueprint to a perfect storybook romance in both stories and -consequently- in his head (I think romance might even be one of the literary genres with the highest number of unwritten rules that need to be fulfilled for a work to count as a romance), there is also a fairly strict method to a court dance. There is a series of well-known and practiced steps that was laid out in advance, and one is to perform them in succession, and in sync with one's partner. If one of the parties doesn't know or doesn't want to follow the rules/steps, it gets... tangled, messy, and you both stumble. The dance and the relationship both fall apart. The happy ending of a tale is not reached without all the steps in-between being followed, and he so dearly wants his fairytale ending, his happy, fulfilled love, I just---

it's such a perfect metaphor, and what makes it even more perfect is that Wyll is ostensibly aware of it, and he chose it, purposefully, and i don't want to watch the Act 3 commitment scene because I've not yet done it myself and don't want to spoil it, but I would be so surprised if he a.) made no mention of storybook romances, or b.) didn't just straight up propose y'know

don't starve- storywise, themewise- relies heavily on maxwell to get those points across. and not just in the sense that he's a main character, but in how interwoven the overall ideology is in almost every action he performs.

don't starve is about pride. it's about hubris. it's about wanting something badly, and about how much you're willing to sacrifice to get your hands on it. don't starve is about self inflicted torture. don't starve is about chain reactions- hurting the people around you through your decisions, no matter how minuscule. it's about the vicious cycle of power hunger, and the fact there's nothing anyone can do to stop it from repeating.

don't starve is about loneliness, even when surrounded by others. it's about emptiness, even when physically sated. it's about a pain that will never go away. it's about losing nearly everything you've known about yourself, and replacing it with spare parts to build an almost unrecognizable facsimile of who you used to be; and it's about not knowing whether or not to loathe it for what it made you lose, or to be thankful that you even have it at all.

there is no major theme of don't starve that maxwell doesn't completely embody. and i guess it's just so puzzling to me that people can like don't starve and hate him as a character when he's so essential to the greater story being told. like... idk what are you here for lol

That uh. Depends.

Since I am often discovery writing, I spend a lot of time rotating the "what ifs" in my mind before bed. That's small-medium scale. What if I break this bone, what if I stick a knife here, what if I put some scene there.

The point of writing it down though is that it stops the rotating. Sometimes in my falling asleep daydreams I still entertain worse outcomes - character death, failed rescue, a moment too late, worse injuries etc. Things I enjoy hurting myself with, but wouldn't want to write.

I have so much to do, I don't like to "waste time" with stuff that is not in line with the final project. The only reason I wrote the two AU pieces was because it was something I could never write otherwise, as I don't do major character death, and because it was an ask answer.

I do not enjoy reading AUs much. Either the AU is worse, then I don't care, or it's better, then I am sad that it isn't canon, or it's completely different, then my brain can't keep up seeing a different version of a character.

(For example, I am SO SAD @starlit-hopes-and-dreams Hidden Depths AU is not canon 😭😂)
