in honor of love day: what is the biggest or most poignant act of love you have ever given or received? any kind of love, not just romantic. friendship love, family love, partner love, pet love, heck even coworker/boss love

Oh wow, this is a hard one. Hmm..

I can't think of One Big way I have been loved. Not because it's never happened - it might have, and everyone has a different definition of Big Acts - but, I think, love truly is in the small acts that pile up.

I have been lucky to be loved in hundreds of small ways by the people I love.

The first answer that popped in my head when I saw this was back in high school and I had had a terrible day first at school and then, most importantly, at work. I texted my then-boyfriend that "today sucks" or something along those lines while I was still at work. But once I got off for the night he was there, meeting me on my walk home with my favourite raspberry soda and a warm hug. I lived on that for the rest of the week.

I thought about how the first time I got covid (back in 2020 when everyone was still scared of it) my best friend would call and check on me every day as she was driving home because she was worried, and it was such a comfort to know that people not currently stuck at home with me still remembered and cared for me.

I thought about when I was in an abusive relationship after high school and many of my friends started staying away in an attempt to make me see the reality of what was happening. And I thought about how one friend instead decided to stay even closer to make sure I had someone, and looking back I think having her there saved my life in a dozen meanings of the word.

I thought about how the first time I came over to my ex (a nicer one this time) at the agreed-upon time he was still just halfway through making dinner. So instead of being suave and freshly showered and presenting me with multiple courses like he planned, I sat in the kitchen watching him run around trying to cook three things at once and being a bumbling mess. I remember falling in love because I saw the effort he put in firsthand. And the food was good too once it was done lol

I thought about an old friend getting drunk and watching Batman movies with me for days after a breakup as I cried into his shirt. Three days I stayed, and three days he held me as I fell apart. All the while Danny Devitos Penuign was cackling in the background.

I thought about my boyfriend, before we were truly together, coming over to put cold towels on my forehead when I caught the flu in the middle of a heatwave. He caught it too, but the cold towels never stopped.

I don't know, I love watching the spectacle of a good engagement video as much as anyone, but when it comes to love the memories that stick out for me has always been the quiet comfort of raspberry sodas, batman movies, and someone holding my hand.

This was a lovely ask to think about though, thank you <3

They were generally chatting about their connections to the UK (Glenn living here when he was little, Rob and Wrexham, etc.) and Charlie said something along the lines of how he was connected to the UK bc of his middle name, and then he turned to the audience and asked, “Does anyone know my middle name?” And one woman (idk who she was but I adore her) shouted all the way from the stands at the back “PECKHAM” into a dead silent auditorium, and it was so funny, Rob said something like “Look Charlie, your stalker was able to make it.” It was a small moment but I found it so funny

Suddenly… Black out… What’s going on? Then…

A spotlight illuminates centre stage to reveal…

A shit.

“Who pooped the stage?” you may ask yourself, but do not worry, because the one and only ARTEMIS (via video recording) was able to help us get to the bottom of this mystery!

Delving into the histories of Glenn, Charlie, Rob, and Meg individually, Artemis helps us come to the conclusion that it must have been Meg, bringing a plastic turd all the way from the States, because poop jokes are funny.

Otto Partz

Voice Actor: Danny DeVito

Otto Partz is a mannequin NPC in the outskirts of The Amazing Digital Circus, and a pretty special case at that one as well. He almost looks somewhat like a hillbilly with the old man beard and ragged clothes, which are no doubt indicators of his fake personality. Otto is the very first truly despicable person that Team Circus encounters, actively stealing the mechanical parts of the Magical Digital Van just so he can sell them on the black market. A total piece of shit through and through, but also a major coward (as all greedy capitalistic criminals tend to be nowadays), fearing the total jail sentence for his crimes against the video game world. And like all con men in the human world, Otto is very tactful in his methods of gaining profit from his shady deals; he was the one who gave the Magical Digital Van a flat tire with a rusty nail with the gas station and the repair shop being conveniently there for some conspicuous reason, he fooled Zooble and Kinger with his charisma and subtle price gouging of the unnecessary repairs (Otto called them upgrades), and almost got away with it too if it weren't for that meddling jester of theirs. Plus, I think the shirt give it away just what kind of a person Otto truly is and always will be in the grand scheme of things. Fortunately for Team Circus, their encounter with this enemy in disguise is by far the tamest of them all, as there will be a series of betrayals throughout the road trip, some inconvenient, some impactful. In regards to where Team Circus is headed off, they'd better get ready for what enemies they'll face em head on...

For the 'Even When The Night Changes' series

Summary: Y/N applies to be a styling intern for the One Direction crew during the Where We Are tour. As she gets better at her job and closer to the band and crew (especially Harry Styles), some of her dreams seem to be coming true, but so are some of her fears.

This takes place on the set of the 'Steal My Girl' music video that takes place in Chapter 6- where Y/N comes back to work after her concussion.

You let out a deep breath as Harry turns around, meeting his beautiful green eyes, and a smile.

[That annoyingly pretty smile…]

"So? Think it'll be good?" He asks.

"Like you said, it's warm and you'll be wearing a coat, but you look like a rockstar! I'm loving it!"

"Then I'm loving it too!" He replies, giving you a wink, and sending a blush straight to your cheeks.

You instantly clear your throat. "Okay, well, I think you're ready to get out there then."

He steps towards you, close enough to touch, and you close your eyes for just a second as you feel the warmth of his breath on your nose.

"Thanks Sunshine." He utters, then slowly slides past you to exit the trailer.

"Anytime, Rockstar."

[Shit. You're in trouble]

You exit behind him and stand off to the side as the guys start to film a few scenes with the one and only Danny DeVito.

You watch Zayn interact with sumo wrestlers, acrobats twirling ribbons, and Louis bond with a chimp named Eli.

You find yourself smiling through the entire first round of filming.

It's announced that there will be a break, and Harry comes bounding up to you immediately.

"Is this crazy or what?" He asks, displaying a wide and dimpled grin.

[That fucking smile…]

"Yeah." You chuckle. "I can't even believe I'm here!"

"M'glad you are." He replies, placing one hand on your arm with a gentle squeeze. "Glad you're all better and are back."

[This is not good… so not good… right?…]

You clear the lump forming in your throat, before you let the butterflies take over, and your eye catches Niall fiddling with his outfit.

"I should go help him." You point in his direction.

"Okay, yeah. I'll, umm, grab you if mine needs fixing too." He smirks.

You chuckle and shake your head as you make your way over to your friend.

"Please let me help you fix this." You plead with Niall.

"What's got you so flustered?" He laughs.

"I just… umm…" you unintentionally shoot a quick gaze over to where you and Harry were just standing.

"Oh! Got it." He nudges your side with his elbow, as you tinker with some of the accessories on his garments.

"It's nothing, Niall." You slightly scold.

"Uh huh."

"You know, I could accidentally mess something up, and you'd end up butt naked out there." You exclaim, jokingly grabbing his outfit with your fists.

"No, Superstar, you've got it wrong. You want to do that to Harry. His name is Harry."

Your mouth drops open dramatically as you playfully push him backwards.

"I hate you." You smile and turn back to the setup by the trailers.

"You love me!" Niall shouts after you, causing your middle finger to flip up behind your back.

You make your way to the food table and grab a few small bags of snacks.

All of a sudden, you feel a tall presence beside you, and you quickly turn your head.

"Y/N, I have a big problem…" Harry states, with a frown on his face.

"Oh god, what?" You ask, looking all over the outfit to see what could be wrong. "Wait… you look fine…"

You look up to see him smirk. "Yeah, I just needed to hear someone say it."

"You guys are outrageous today!" You state, smacking his arm and causing the snack bags to fall to the ground. "Damn it."

Harry grabs them for you, then uses his other hand to hold yours open. Your breath hitches for a moment at the touch.

[Get it together, it is just his hand touching yours for fucks sake]

He places the snacks in your hands and he pulls his lips inward when you gaze up at him.

The directors call everyone back to set, but Harry still stands closely in front of you for what feels like another minute or two.

Your heart starts to beat faster, but you pull yourself out of the daze and drop your hands from his. "Go get 'em, Rockstar."

He licks his lips and nods as he turns away, heading up to the top of a hill where a group of ballerinas are waiting.

As Harry's scene starts, he walks through a 'green screen' door then down in between the dancers. The wind picks up and two of the ballerinas lose their parasols, so the cameras stop rolling.

Harry's eyes immediately catch yours and he shrugs his shoulders with a smile, causing you to giggle.

[That adorable smile…]

Niall appears next to you and leans in.

"Shouldn't he be naked?" He whispers.

Your head snaps over to him. "You shut it right now."

He shrugs and walks away, leaving you to stand there with a full body blush washing over you.

Once the scene is reset, they call for action, but once again the wind picks up. Only this time, something gets snagged on Harry's coat and he immediately whips his head up to find you.

Without hesitation, you make your way up to where he is, carefully removing some0 twig that got caught in the fur.

"I knew I'd need your help again at some point." He chuckles.

You shake your head as you look up at him, meeting his deep green eyes and that bright smile yet again.

[That fucking smile…]

Your attention is quickly grabbed by something in his hair, and you immediately reach up to catch the twig that is caught in it. As you untangle it all, you run your hand through his hair to fix it, letting out a sigh as you feel his soft curls glide between your fingers.

[For fucks sake, what are you doing?]

Your eyes widen as you realize what just happened, and when you bring your arm down, you are inches away from his face, unable to avoid the sight of him biting his lower lip.

"Thank you, Sunshine." He whispers softly, and you let out a deep exhale.

"Just here to help."

[That was wrong. That was so wrong. Right?]

You squeeze your eyes shut for a moment and turn away, making your way back down the hill, and the filming picks up again.

As the sun just starts to make its way down, the guys all run through the song a few times while standing on top of another rocky hill. Balloons are released, there's an entire circus of people in front, and it's just spectacular to watch.

The last scene to be filmed is one that includes rain. As everyone gets ready, you walk directly over to the guys and point at Harry.

"Take that off!" You demand, and instantly Niall bursts out laughing, which receives a stern glare from you.

"What?" Harry chuckles.

"I'm not about to let that gorgeous coat get wet, please, take it off."

He nods and motions for you to lead the way off the actual set. You get out of the way and turn around to see Harry smiling as he shrugs off the article of clothing. He holds it out in front of him, and as you take it, you unintentionally fix his black, barely-buttoned shirt. Your hand accidently grazes right over his butterfly tattoo and your knees go weak.

"Oh my god." You whisper under your breath.

You stare up at him, suddenly unable to keep your eyes from his, and your breath quickens. He looks just as intensely into yours, and for a moment you forget where you are.

As he keeps his eyes on you, the fake rain starts to fall.

[Aren't you supposed to be working? You have got to stay professional]

You snap out of the moment as you feel a tug on your wrist, and realize he is trying to drag you into the water.

"Harry, no!" You plead.

He, once again, bites his lower lip and you, once again, feel weak.

"I have the coat!" You shout, causing him to stop in his tracks.

Your body, still in motion from his pull, bumps into his. You start to slip on the wet ground, but he grabs your shoulders as he catches you.

You steady and straighten yourself up.

Harry looks at you, then at the coat, then backwards to the scene of rain that is only about three feet away from you.

You can see the smirk forming as he turns back your way, but you furrow your brows instantly.

"Don't you dare." You scold.

He licks his lips then pouts, drawing your attention directly to those motions as it turns into another smile.

[That smile... you could just... kiss it. Wait, no, what?]

You're pulled from your thoughts when the directors call for them to get ready to shoot, and you sigh as you pull away.

"You got lucky, Sunshine." He laughs.

You drop your gaze and can only manage a nod as you turn and walk away. You let out a breath that you didn't even realize you were holding in, and go place the coat in Harry's trailer, before finding an empty chair and melting into it as you sit down.

Filming finally finishes, and everyone mingles for a few moments afterward. Your eyes catch Harry's and he gives you another smile.

[That amazing smile…]

You feel a blush threaten to appear, so you quickly smile back and turn away. Thankfully, the day is over and you can avoid any more flustered interactions with him.

Amelia walks up next to you and places a hand on your shoulder.

"Can you go get that coat from Harry? I think he just went back to his trailer."

Hey its me; you. But 5 years ago. Yes, this is 13 year old little fetus Bethany DeVito. I guess I'll start by refreshing your memory about what life was like back in the day. The latest events:

-people are eating tide pods. Yup.

-your ceiling currently has the northern hemisphere mapped out on it in glowing starts. It's pretty sick

- you cut that mole off two nights ago. Yup, that one.

MONTHLY MEDIA: October 2022

The spookiest time of the year and I’m not talking about tax season! Here’s how I spent the month of October.

……….FILM……….

Tremors (1990) Really really great. The premise is simple enough yet I was consistently surprised by the movie’s creativity. Plenty of suspense and really great effects PLUS a gun-toting Reba McEntire. This movie really has it all.

Wayne’s World (1992) Having never seen this before, it held up surprisingly well! I’d never expect 100% of the jokes to survive 30 years but the characters and writing are really really great. That Scooby-Doo ending/call-back? Incredible. Really fun.

Forrest Gump (1994) Having never seen this before, I’m surprised by how dated it felt. I know Hanks won an award(s) for his role but it...is a different watch today than it was in ‘94. It was just so jarring at the beginning of the film, you know? And it’s interesting that a lot of the special effects that were cutting edge then are the sort you can now do with filters on your phone. Just wild progress in 30ish years. Anyway it really is about two people: one with fantastic luck and one with terrible luck, isn’t it?

Romancing the Stone (1984) Perfect casting and Danny DeVito’s style in this movie is a 10/10. Lots of fun and I can only assume the mudslide scene went on to influence the waterslides in the Goonies.

Werewolf By Night (2022) Happy to see some visual and tonal variety in the Marvel stuff. I wish this one better connected with me but it felt incomplete and I’m not sure why. Oh well. Practical effects, puppet corpse, and B&W blood were all top notch.

……….TELEVISION……….

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Episode 1.06 to 1.08) I liked it. Maybe i’m the perfect viewer since I’ve read some of the books, liked the movies, but am not reeeeeeally all that concerned with the show’s accuracy; I just want some good television. If each season follows Sauron’s journey deceiving a group and getting them to make the rings, I’d be happy.

Feet of Clay by Terry Pratchett (Page 264 of 415) A little slow reading this over the course of the month but still totally enamoured with the Discworld setting. Maybe it’s unfair for a series with 40+ titles but I’ve never felt more like I’m in a real and living world than when I’m reading a Pratchett novel. Truly a pleasure to read each and every entry.

Batman: Dark Victory by Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale (Complete) These two make books that are meant to be read around Halloween. I remember reading this shortly after Loeb and Sale’s The Long Halloween and not liking it as much but now as an adult, I recognize it for being its own thing. Really great and these two create what are the epitome of comics: flashy yet considered artwork, accessible yet rich narratives, and a really beautiful merging of the two.

Delicious in Dungeon Vol. 11 by Ryoko Kui (Complete) Still my favourite ongoing manga series and still one I will recommend until I’m blue in the face. So good. I can’t tell if the series is wrapping up, or really digging into another phase. EIther way, I’m loving it.

Articles of Interest (Podcast) For those who wear clothes, I can’t recommend this podcast enough. The new season is all about ivy as a style but if you want more episodic listens, go back to the previous season.

……….GAMING……….

Oz: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The group is digging deeper into the political intrigue as they explore Munchkin District and finally met the regional mayor, Hungry Tiger! No word yet if they’ll be able to meet Cowardly Lion or explore his sapphire castle. If you want more detail then you can read all about it over here!

Neverland: A Fantasy Role-Playing Setting (Andrews McMeel Publishing) The Mof1 group had just one session this month where they fought a giant stone obelisk. They literally chipped away at it for a couple hours but it was a satisfying victory!

Wizorb (Tribute Games) I don’t play video games often but a mix of fantasy and pinball for like...$5 sounded perfect to me. I played it a bit but I found there were too many frustrating level designs to really enjoy it. Maybe I should go back and play Kirby’s Pinball Land on my Gameboy.

Unsolicited opinions on Matilda the musical the movie

I hope I’m not the only one who wasn’t too impressed by the movie adaptation of Matilda the musical. Don’t get me wrong I liked it! But I really wanted to love it and just couldn’t, here’s why:

(Disclaimer I AM gonna be comparing this to the Danny Devito movie even though it’s not a remake, I just think the movie was ultimately a superior telling and handled many of these elements better)

It felt more like a series of very well done music videos than a coherent movie. There were pretty significant pacing issues in my opinion. For example establishing Matilda’s home life and status as an abuse/neglect victim, introducing us to the library, and sending her to school all happened in the first 15 minutes. And even that was crammed in with two musical numbers that didn’t do much to help get those points across

I’m so glad this wasn’t afraid to be bright/ colorful and unrealistic where it counted, but I think sometimes they valued the spectacle more than what would actually fit for the scene. “Quiet” is meant to be… well, quiet. I think seeing Matilda simply just stand and calm herself down was much more affective than floating away from a tornado in a hot air balloon.

Matilda doesn’t seem to go through much character development, and it’s hard to get invested in her as a real child. There’s a sense in the old movie that she has to learn she’s deserving of love and care, and it takes a good chunk of the movie with a lot of uncomfortable moments and tears to retaliate. Here she’s busting out revenge pranks in the first 15 minutes. Also apparently in the new version Matilda is… psychic?? Idk if that’s in the book but that was a little much for me. She seems very sure of herself right off the bat, and correct to be so cause she essentially defeats miss Trunchable by herself with very little help from her classmates. She’s just a bit too perfect and her home life doesn’t seems to really have tangible ill effects internally

khaire!! thank you for this lovely ask and your kind words to me!! sorry it took a bit to get back to you; i had surgery recently LMAO here’s my deal with movies/content and mythology. when you’re a religious person and these are your deities, you have to keep in mind that whatever you’re going to watch on the screen is not a particularly accurate view of the gods. they’re coming at it from the perspective of telling a story, or they’re looking at a specific retelling of a specific myth. that doesn’t reflect the lived reality of thousands of years of historical worship of these gods and the historical fact that views of the theoi are immensely varied from region to city to household to individual. it’s really nuanced, and you just gotta set that all aside and go “hehe i am watching a movie about the gods :)” and enjoy it and remember that it’s not a source to learn from. i harp on this because i have met modern worshippers who aren’t comfortable with certain gods because of media depictions of them, which is not cool imo. with all of that in mind, i am fond of disney’s hercules. what can i say. the soundtrack really smacks. i like the 90s animation style. i’m a sucker for danny devito and his role as phil makes me giggle. i really enjoy kingdom hearts, and i’m very fond of the hercules levels in those games. the underworld music really slaps (listen here). the fight with cerberus in kh1 haunts me to this day; i spent so long on that fight it’s not even funny. i’m also fond of supergiant’s hades, although that’s a video game. i find a majority of the designs interesting and surprisingly well researched (like poseidon having blue hair, that’s mythologically accurate!) i enjoy the level design as well. it’s really engaging and fun to play, and the mechanics work in it’s favor to tell a good story with a great gameplay hook. it’s a mix of mythological sources, but i’m not mad at that for the sake of entertainment and a cohesive story. the soundtrack smacks hard. it’s definitely worth at least peeking at if you like mythological based media imo. thank you again for the ask! i hope you have a lovely day! may the theoi bless you!

Thank you for answering my Metal Gear question. I read both articles that you posted and got a lot of good information from them. The term “stunt casting” was new to me and I wonder if that’s where Director Kojima was going? It seems since MGS3 he wanted a movie star to play Snake, but it also makes me wonder why continue to keep original cast from previous MGS games for MGSV? Thanks again for your help it’s definitely given me a lot to think about.

And fwiw stunt casting isn’t new (Anthony Hopkins in Thor, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman in TDK, and Danny DeVito in Always Sunny to name a few recent ones), but I haven’t heard it really applied video games until the last ~5yrs or so save for like… the insane voice cast in Kingdom Hearts.

I can see where MGSV could be considered stunt casting (Kiefer Sutherland as VB/BB always felt random to me, bringing in Troy Baker for Ocelot* in his 40’s had to be pricey, etc.), but idk if I’d consider all of Kojima’s choices stunt casting. He genuinely seems to be friends with a lot of these people but considers them to be muses to some degree too. Like… I just don’t think he’d reshoot whole scenes with Mads just to include him smoking if his choices were just stunt casting lol. That’s just my two cents, tho.

As to why only some characters get replaced: there’s budget constraints to think about. Real actors are going to get real expensive, fast. And if you’re already over budget (and delayed!) like MGSV was, going through a messy fallout like Konami and Kojima had, it’d be wise to just retain some of old voices. Plus, Robin Atkin Downes (Kaz) was already a good choice, and Tara Strong (Paz) is a hugely popular voice actress. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broke. It’s cheaper lol.

(*We’ve only had Ocelot as a ~20 year old in MGS3 and Ocelot in his 60’s and onward in MGS1/2/4. It does makes sense to hire a new voice actor to play the 40-something version of the character regardless of notoriety.)

and in my addled state i was talking about this and then realized that around the same time there is another piece of media that happens to have some kind of genetic dominant recessive twin shit and i was like what years were these made and realized that we live in the timeline in which it is not only possible but probable that hideo kojima saw the movie Twins (1988) and decided

Here’s a post that I made to a watch forum on August 26, 2022. I’ve posted a few of my watch writings from there to this blog in the past (among the posts tagged ‘watches’) and I have a few more that I want to migrate.

There are collections and there are collections.

A couple days ago, we talked about the distinction between collecting and enthusiasm, how neither was necessarily dependent on the other. I’m biased to enthusiasm, but I am also biased towards a collection that tells a story. Well, they all do, but what I am saying is that the story is what really draws me in and what makes the collection most worth sharing. That’s not a surprise given my ham-fisted attempts to make the #literature tag a thing on [redacted].

(This paragraph is a long lead-in, so skip it if you want to get straight to the point.) The other day, in my non-watch wanderings on the internet, I saw “Danny DeVito Answers the Web’s Most Searched Questions.” (I’ll place that video at the very end of this post for anyone interested.) There is a reference within to DeVito’s appearance in the 1987 film Throw Momma from the Train. I have fond memories of the film having seen it in the theater when in high school. As a jazz fan at the time (still am), Branford Marsalis’s acting debut was an additional draw. Anyway, I haven’t seen the film since my own kids were young, so I went looking for a stream and there it was in full on YouTube. So I am watching. It’s taking a while because I keep pausing to try to unsuccessfully identify watches.

But it is a scene in which Owen, played by DeVito, shares his coin collection with the generally frustrated and disinterested Larry, played by Billy Crystal, that has brought me rushing back to post to [redacted]. The coins in Owen’s collection are seemingly insignificant and their only monetary worth is their face value, but it’s the story that makes them interesting and that makes them a collection, at least the kind of collection that I am most interested in. Here’s that sequence (just over two minutes long) so you can see what I mean:

With watches on the mind, I suppose I might try to make everything about them. You know, “when you are holding a hammer, everything looks like a nail” or something like that. :) And it’s fun that way.

For sure, our watches don’t have to tell a story nor do they have to be a collection. Yet there is often a story in them if someone is curious enough to ask questions. Where did you get it? When? Why that color? Why that model? Why that brand? What places has it gone with you? Has it ever broken? What was your first watch? Who have you met through your watch(es)? Why do you wear a watch? Etc. (Of course, “bug off” is one very acceptable response to all that.)

They can pick up stories too. Like I have said somewhere else, one of the functions of watches, especially these days, is to connect us to other people, they are a delivery mechanism for stories and history. Conversation too. I mean, here were are on [redacted], right?

My family saw Star Wars at a drive in. It’s The Empire Strikes Back that I recall most vividly – standing on the sidewalk outside the theater (inside for that one), arguing with my dad that it couldn’t be the end of the film and was just an intermission.

The everyday, that’s where it’s at for me. Sure, I like hallmark events, but the everyday memories are what really make a life for me. :)

That’s a great breakdown of ownership. For now, I am the one and done. There is a chance that I will become a wearer with a few more. I’m still getting used to wearing one after a half-century-long lifetime without them, so I might also be a wearer.

I could see myself as a curator only if I did that on behalf of an institution. And I can’t ever see myself as a player or a trophy hunter, though I do like a good search.

I’ve dabbles with the idea of learning to fix watches (for fun, not for money), but then I’d want to move most of them along to new owners. Where does a watchmaker generally sit in this list? Experience collector?

I love to geek about about these things. I agree with you that story and narrative are near-essential parts of human life, they help us form identity, find purpose, and hopefully make meaning.

This next bit might be too oddball, but I’m putting it here anyway.

I have a fascination with the topic of objects, especially with regard to their potential sublime and/or spiritual nature. I read pretty widely about topics such as maintenance and care (in the concrete, in the relational, and in the theoretical senses) and that leads to stuff like object oriented ontology and new materialism, though think those camps don’t acknowledge and/or respect animism enough and I prefer animism, the old fashion kind, not that new technology one (good essay along those lines).

I like the idea of objects as totems, grounding devices, kind of like the ones in Inception (2010), and as calming or focusing devices like worry stones and kombolói. I find myself using my watch as something like that, taking it off and fidgeting with the bracelet or rubbing my thumb on it’s dial or caseback. (I don’t have one, but the Swatch Irony watches have a great shape and feel to them that would make great worry stones. Very tempting.)

And with watches, all of this leads me to interesting places like these hirisi.

“Aluminum hirisi made by Busu Nyumbani, Ntulya, 1995. The metal can be camouflaged as watches and may deflect attention from an individual who does not want others to know that they are wearing empowered objects. While first created in 1995, these are used until today and now come in a variety of shapes and sizes.”

There’s more:

For some Sukuma individuals, protecting and empowering the body is regarded as essential to overseeing personal health, financial stability, magnetism, protection, and a variety of other concerns in daily life. Healers may incise activated powdered substances directly into a clients skin or prescribe that they bathe in them. Those adhering to traditional Sukuma religious values may also wear hirisi, or personal power objects, such as those seen on Salusalu Nyumbani (Fig. 21). The bugota used in these small woven containers, like those in other objects, are perceived to last indefinitely although the woven pieces may decay over time (Fig. 2). Individuals bathe while wearing their hirisi and rarely, if ever, remove them. Many wear them under their clothes, while others display them proudly. But in some small communities, visible hirisi can raise psychologically complicated questions. They may cause neighbors or friends to question: Why does the person feel they need empowerment or protection? Do they feel threatened by someone? Are they now stronger than others in the community? Should I feel disempowered? In 1995 Nyumbani Shilinde created a new form of hirisi in response to the concerns raised by the potentially threatening visibility of these objects. Creating hirisi in the traditional way, by embedding bugota in a small black fabric bundle, Shilinde designed a new external container from aluminum cooking pots. He commissioned Busu Nyumbani to create the round forms (Fig. 22), which Shilinde suggested could be camouflaged as wristwatches (Fig. 23). At quick glance, this new metal form would not be recognizable as a power object and the wearer would not be subjected to the potential questions or jealousies of others in response to visible forms of empowerment. These newly designed hiris, which have remained a popular alternative to the woven original, illustrate the complex psychological role that visible power objects play in Sukuma culture. Unlike traditional hirisi, they are also long lasting--the outward aluminum containers will not decay like their cotton or nylon woven counterparts. However, permanence was not Shilindes central concern in creating the camouflaged objects, but merely an outcome which happened to add to the ongoing life of the empowering substances within.

Those last few sentences are not too far removed from the way some of us talk about watches and I like that.

Maybe it’s the slow watch news of August that has me doing more blue sky and sentimental thinking about all of this.

One of the other things I like most about Owen’s collection is how small it is. When I compare the number of things I had as a kid to the number that my parents had when they were kids and to the number my children had when young, it becomes clear that from generation to generation, there is a creep in the quantity of objects in our lives. I don’t know if that’s a good thing, but I am inclined to say it isn’t. (And this is just looking at my family, which is generally very frugal, slow to buy things, and big into maintenance, repair, reuse, etc. When I compare my family to other families I know, I get anxious about all of the stuff they have.)

This leads me to share another nice and small collection from another film I love: Amélie (2001). The protagonist find’s a child’s toy collection in the wall of her apartment. I won’t spoil the rest in case you haven’t seen the film and would like to do so.

For me, the essence of his collection is the fact that it has meaning to him, and that's all that matters. Some of the most cherished pieces in my personal watch collection are those that have no horological significance, no monetary value, and would be of very little interest to 99.9% of watch enthusiasts, but which have a personal connection that makes them invaluable to me.
