NieR Re[in]carnation The People and the World Transmigration and the End of Reincarnation
If Red is the color of ______ then why did I ____ the ending of NieR Re[d ]carnation?
Between YoRHa:Dark Apocalypse, some of the RoD stories and now this, a pattern has been established:
If I didn't really like the ending of a NieR story, chances are 100% that given a couple hours to days I will figure myself into "This is the best thing ever written, I committed blasphemy against the god king by ever doubting his vision."
Because to be open and honest about it, right after playing it the ending was kinda boring to me - because if you paid attention to the periphery and knew the deep lore you already expected 90% of the reveals, the only really new thing is the rundown on what happened to His, Her and N2.
Let me phrase it like this: the Time Loop Theory didn't really need confirmation up until now. It was a thing because it fits the themes, but acknowledging it wouldn't really add anything because the vague sense of inevitability already exists simply by alluding to it and the previous narratives all already had it built into them without it anyways - so I think the only reason they hard confirmed it now was because it literally added to the story. Him and Her being stuck in the time loop of humanity's failure is why they despaired.
So long story short, the stuff they 'confirmed' I didn't really need to be confirmed (cries in no y:da) and as fine as it was, not having an immediate "Oh Shit!" Moment made the chapter kind of boring. So while kind of neat it didn't really do anything for me.
But I also finished Reincarnation at 5AM. So I went to sleep and Io and behold, I awoke to a revelation by the god king:
This was amazing. This story logistically paid off on the entirety of the game's narratives in a single chapter all while talking about something new. What the fuck. Once again, this shouldn't work. How did they do that??? How is the writing in this game so tightly unified despite being literally fragmented into 20-ish individual stories??? This game has the most writers of all NieR games and yet every single story is pulling at the same rope??? Like, how???
To me NieR Reincarnation is about two things: Number 1 - Reincarnation is a Cage, all humans are born into some level of agency-less-ness and wouldn't you know it, they have no agency about that Number 2 - 'Humanity' is a more complex thing than just 'Being of the Human Species' (which is basically the NieR theme)
I think the Robots in the cast illustrate this the best: Dimos and Marie and Yurie and 10H (and Noelle and 063y and F66x) were made for a purpose, but they didn't choose their purpose, their creators did for very specific reasons. But against all odds they find themselves human and humans have wishes and dreams, even if it's just to fulfill their purpose, they seek out the agency to make those dreams come true and if they pray for their dreams to come true they will find a way.
By experiencing the pain and despair of solitude He became human, because He wanted, He wished to not experience it anymore. By experiencing the pain and despair of the machine lifeforms N2 became human in the same way and She became human by incorporating N2's experience of pain into Herself.
And as Humans they pray for a better future. And maybe they can't do it on their own, because they're human and humans fail and cry and shit and die. Maybe they desperately need the help of someone who can help, even if it's just a little girl who is selfless enough to offer them an encouraging hand despite all of the mistakes they made. But by praying for their dreams to come true, by not outright denying the possibility of a better future, simply by hoping this better future exists we can reach it, because we're human. We will find a way.
So even I, from one Prayer to another, want to Thank You for Praying. Please believe in the future you want to see, because otherwise it will not happen. And remember, all Prayers lead to the Cage.
Also Drakengard symbolism because GODDAMN IT, JUST MAKE ANOTHER DRAKENGARD GAME YOU-----
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They called her the second girl, but she's at least the third!!! (i think four if you count crym?) (but i'm pretty sure only i do that so let's do three)
I'm fucking pissed. You dare to leave the Drakengard Shit, MY beloved Drakengard Shit, as subtext symbolism??? How dare you. How absolutely dare you. I hope you know I am praying for Drakengard 5 (not a mistake) Yoko Taro and as I have established in this post you yourself have said that prayers come true if you believe in them so go ahead. I'm waiting.
No Seed of Resurrection talk, No word on Mother, No Accord, just the girl with One's horns doing the Manah stuff I deserve, because I called it back when Replicant Remake came out.
No but really though, I wonder if there might be a reason that we got basically 0 answers to Drakengard stuff and only answers to the NieR side of things. Apparently - and I have no quote for this, I just read some chatter about it - Yoko Taro has said that the next NieR game is planned, but will only come after another game he's making... and well... if this final chapter has made anything clear by omission it's that Drakengard isn't NieR... Just saying...
Tumblr media
Also, this still it wasn't a Y:DA reference after all... They didn't even slightly allude to it q_q #AnoggForReincarnation is truly over...
But let's talk about the color Red for a second, because I have a thought.
I'm not going into it too much, we all know Red is a pretty symbolically heavy color in general, but in NieR and honestly even more so in Drakengard especially - they literally just did stain a girl in white in blood again, that's the Drakengard thing - but...
Mama's Pod is also Red. She receives a Red Carnation, a common Japanese Mother's Day gift, from 10H which is the key to 10H unlocking the truth. Clearly Red isn't just Hatred... but I haven't thought enough about it to really tell you what that's about. I will have to think about that - and if I ever come to a conclusion on that front I will tell you all about it.
Anyways, that's it for now... I can confidently state that NieR Reincarnation is my favorite NieR game and honestly by a long shot. I don't give a shit that it's a Gacha, I can't do anything about that and Yoko Taro, Yuki Wada and the Rest of the Team did the absolute most with the hand they were dealt, because clearly someone up in Square Enix does not like what the silly mask man is doing and doesn't give him the budget and creative liberties he truly deserves.
Once again a sincere Thank you for Praying - please believe in the future you want to see, no matter how distant and unattainable it may seem. You will still have to look out for and grab the hand reaching out to actually reach it - but you will only see that hand if you're hoping for one to come your way in the first place.
Speaking of which, here is my Prayer for the day: #AnoggForWhateverComesAfterReincarnationBecauseIfThisWasReplicantEndingEPayoffThenY:DAPayoffHasToBeNext

I keep thinking about this one splash page which the fantranslators of the Kaze To Ki No Uta translation I read would have inserted at the beginnings of volumes. Kaze To Ki No Uta is a manga which I could best compare to being stabbed in the chest repeatedly by Aubrey Beardslay and Thomas Mann while being yelled at and degraded for eight volumes or so. It's not "literary-pornographic", so much as "literary-obscene". It's effect is similar to the Marquis de Sade, in how Sade wrote his pornographic works to be so completely monomaniacally perverse, so obsessively, compulsively so, and so deeply immersed in the farthest, most homicidal forms of perversion that nobody at all could read his works as scintillating, and yet the people who translated Kaze To Ki No Uta thought of it as this:
Tumblr media
This is the kind of manga which should be guarded by men with guns from the average hentai or fujoshi, and yet here we are.

The Drakengard elf is a cannibal after having been driven insane by the fact that she ate her own baby. In one of the endings she gets eaten by giant evil babies of doom. Drakengard is a game that exists.
now that's a tragic elf character concept

I had a gut-dropping tinge of a theory about the use of “puppet” when referring to Accord and now, knowing what we know about the Cage being the [redacted], and the implications from the game/anime/Pearl Harbor with N2 being a manipulator this whole time in regards to YoRHa…
Are the Watchers (or whoever is currently representing them - N2, perhaps?) manipulating Accord? 🤔
But then would she be omniscient (or omnipotent - I can never recall which one) enough to know, given she can see across all timelines?

I love how you can infer, through the other intoners, all the most essential elements of Zero’s psyche:
Sense of Grim Obligation
Innocence, forever lost (cringe)
The desire to shed the wearisome burden of your own humanity and become an esoteric forest fae who eats children and speaks in riddles
Sex-repulsion (full of internalized misogyny)
Horny lizard brain (also full of internalized misogyny)

Two, the Goddess of Kindness: A Drakengard 3 Analysis
WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS! READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!
Yoooo. I'm back again. It's been a while since the last post. Been getting kinda busy lately. If you're new here, my name is Taro and I post memes and character analysis discussions. This is my Seven Deadly Sins/Seven Heavenly Virtues series for Drakengard 3. Be sure to check out the other analyses I did for Five, Four, and Three. Go ahead and leave a follow as well if you enjoy these discussions and would like to be notified when I post more! With that out of the way, let's get onto Two, the Goddess of Kindness.
Tumblr media
"Throughout the endless war, the kind Intoner gathered up orphans across the land and cared for them. She didn't have any parents of her own, so she wanted to help others escape the misery that she herself had known. And through it all, her one true love was always at her side. This is the story of a certain couple. A couple that strove endlessly to support each other."
INTRO TO TWO
Two is the third eldest Intoner sister and the ruler of the Land of Sands. Her personality is a stark contrast from that of most of her sisters: Five being self-indulgent and self-centered, Four being wildly insecure and judgmental, and Three being unhinged and immoral. Instead, Two has a bright and cheerful disposition and is shown to be highly empathetic and kindhearted. And she also has a knack for cooking. She genuinely loves the orphaned children under her care, and she doesn't hide the fact that she is madly in love with her disciple, Cent.
NOVELLA
I know, I know, I'm going in a different order this time around. I just feel like it made more sense to go chronologically. Anyways, the novella takes place sometime before the events of the game, as per usual. Two, Cent and the children are living in the underground shrine that One tasked them with protecting.
On this particular day, she plans to make a home-cooked meal for Cent and the children. Cent wonders about which Intoner has the best cooking, and Two describes their individual cooking styles: Five cooks odd monsters and creatures that people normally wouldn't (and probably shouldn't) consume, on top of the fact that her meals tend to be unhealthy. Four's cooking is bland because she doesn't use any seasonings in her dishes for nutritional reasons. And Three doesn't bother chopping up vegetables and leaves them whole. So she decides that One is the best cook. Cent points out the how bizarre their cooking styles are and that thought never crosses Two's mind. This shows how she sees the good in people, but it also shows her naiveté. More on that later.
This story doesn't have anything to do with the main game. In my opinion, it just further illustrates who Two is as a person; a wholesome, kind young woman that truly cares about others. From her children, to her soldiers, to the citizens of the Land of Sands, she always does her best to help others.
TWO'S PROLOGUE & MAIN GAME
I'm combining these two into one section because both stories intertwine with one another.
So the first time we see Two is in the beginning of Drakengard 3, accompanied by her other sisters. The five of them fight Zero after she declares that she wants to kill them all and take their power. At first, Two seems happy to see her. But after they begin fighting, she tells Zero that she has to pack for a trip and that she doesn't have time to fight. Her tone of voice sounded annoyed as she said this, but that's my opinion.
At some point after her confrontation with Zero, she and Cent get tasked by One to clear out some monsters. They begin in the Land of Mountains and then go to in the Land of Forests. A lot of their dialogue is lovey-dovey banter, but here's some lines that stick out to me:
"If you say it, it must be true!" -Two to Cent
"Oh cent, you're so strong! You've got power AND beauty. You're just perfect!" - Two to Cent again
As well as this conversation:
Two: They seem kind of...weak and worn out.
Cent:  Well they ARE stragglers. Most are pretty badly hurt.
Two: Maybe we should try healing them. You know? Like we did with those orphans?
Cent: I'm afraid we can't do that, Lady Two. You understand why I did that right? Why I harnessed the power of your song? Why I used it to cure the orphans and strengthen our soldiers?
Two: Because you're kind.
Cent: ...No. I did it because I wanted them to protect you. And in order to do that, they had to be healthier. Stronger. I strove to forge them into a mighty shield for you, my lady. It had nothing to do with kindness.
Two: That's not true! You're super kind! You're my gentle prince!
These lines illustrate a major flaw in her character, and that is that she idealizes Cent. She blindly believes everything that he says (which is later confirmed by Zero) and refuses to believe that Cent did something that wasn't out of the kindness of his heart. It doesn't seem like she wants to see him as a flawed or less than innocent. And that kind of blind faith and loyalty can leave someone in an undoubtedly vulnerable position. But I suppose this is how one might view their partner in their first relationship, right?
After a short rest, Cent is informed by Decadus via letter that the Cathedral City is in danger. Two is immediately worried about the children, so the couple hurriedly make their way over there. They are forced to fight their way through their own soldiers that have gone berserk, but not without Two lamenting over their situation. Cent reveals that he used the power of Two's song when he healed the children and the soldiers, which is the source of this corruption. This devastates Two and she blames herself for this tragedy, but Cent tries to reassure her that this was all his doing.
As they make their way inside the Hidden Cathedral and fight through more soldiers and skulls, Two's mental state begins to deteriorate the further they go in. By this point, Cent is really trying (and failing) to get Two to calm down.
At last, they arrive at the final chamber to find a homonculus, which is an amalgamation of the corrupted children. Two is understandably hysterical as she realizes what this creature is. Unfortunately, the couple is forced to kill the homonculus. What makes this worse is the fact that the children are still crying out from within the creature. Which means that they're still semi-sentient.
"By the end of the battle, the Intoner's spirit had been shattered. The broken shards fell deep into darkness...doomed never to return. This is the story of a couple deeply in love. The story of a foolish couple. The story...of a couple ruined beyond repair"
Took the words right out of my mouth. Having to kill the children that she so deeply cared for broke her spirit beyond repair. And she couldn't cope. This event gives context as to why Two is in such a zombified state when we next encounter her in the main game. Zero also states that you need to have a strong mind in order to keep from being corrupted by the power of song (by the flower, rather). This explains why the soldiers all lost their minds. Two shows up briefly in Branch B, but, in my opinion, this marks the end of her story.
CENT
I just want to use this section to briefly talk about Cent. He's a tough nut to crack and hard to understand. I spent quite a bit of time internally debating about whether or not his love for Two was genuine. I wasn't sure if he was pretending to love her in order to keep her happy or perhaps he just wanted to use her power. After Mikhail killed Two, Cent was awfully calm about it. I would've expected him to fly into rage after the woman he loved just got killed in front of him.
Unrelated, but he also behaves differently around others as opposed to when he's with Two. When he interacts with Zero and her party, he has this air of pompousness to him and is obnoxious. Even in his novella, he still internally strokes his own ego. However, he's rather serious and protective when he's with Two.
The way he says "I'm just a big idiot right?", to Zero after Mikhail kills Two almost makes it seem as though he's purposefully playing the fool. As for what purpose that would possibly serve is beyond me. Despite that, he remains loyal to Two in Branch B and D, so it seems as though his feelings for her are indeed genuine.
COLOR THEORY (BLUE)
This segment is where we discuss color theory as it relates to the character. Two's main color obviously being blue.
Some positive traits of blue can include, peace, tranquility, honesty, reliability, trust, and intelligence. While these traits definitely are spot on, I perceive her more as a pink or an orange personality type. A pink personality type being known for its sensitivity and empathy, while orange being known for its passion and energy.
However, some negative traits include conservatism, sadness or depression, coldness or aloofness, fragility, and predictability. The positive traits are what she showed before the tragedy, and she identifies with some of the negative ones after the tragedy.
NOVELLA IMAGE
I don't think there's too much to say about the image. Two is being surrounded by the people that she loves; she's being embraced by Cent, her lover, with her dear children close to her.
THE FINAL SONG
Last thing I wanna talk about before I get out of here and that's her dance in the Final Song. Because she's an even-numbered Intoner, her movements are symmetrical. She's the only intoner besides Zero that dances to her own theme. The choreography for her dance is beautiful and passionate. Her movements are wide and kind of wild. Her arms always end up stopping in front of her chest, her heart. No matter where she moves, she always returns to her heart. After reaching her heart, she moves her arms outwards. It's like she's giving out her love and her compassion. Her undying love for Cent. And the love that she holds for her children. She was always willing to help others in need. She's a giver rather than a taker and her dance is a reflection of that.
TLDR/AFTERTHOUGHT
Two was a kindhearted, yet naïve Intoner who was in love with her protective and suave disciple, Cent. She was loved and admired by the orphaned children that she took care of. In an attempt secure Two's safety in the future, the disciple would end up inadvertently misusing her power. The couple grossly underestimated just how much power Two's songs had and suffered greatly for it, as well as the victims that were killed in the process. Two's mind never recovered from this tragedy.
Phew! And that's a wrap, folks. Seriously, thanks to everyone that has been supporting these posts. I appreciate that you guys give me the time of day. As usual, I encourage you to leave your thoughts and opinions below. Not sure when I'll start on One's analysis, but you can be sure that I'm gonna finish all the drakengard 3 ladies. This Taro signing off, and this has been my two cents (bah-dum-tss!). Until next time! 💙

Dragonmage Pact Notes
Here's a couple of notes on lore and unexplored plot threads in Dragonmage Pact. Spoilers about the story ahead!
On the Incarnates
The incarnates of the original Chief Goddess and her nymph daughters think of each other as sisters. Regardless of her age, the goddess incarnate will still act as their leader.
When reincarnated, the incarnate will start out as a small child knows little about her role. She merely trusts on her guts and instinctively bond with someone she regards as strong to make them her guardian. Older incarnates extensively care for and assist younger incarnates until they "mature" and magically acquire the knowledge of their identity and powers.
An incarnate may have multiple guardians, but the incarnates more often prefer to only have one guardian at a time. An incarnate and her guardian does not necessarily carry out a friendship or even a romance. (Feel free to imagine what exactly is the deal between Rhen and Dameon, Talia and Devin, Mel and Spook, Stella and Edward, Ingrid and Boyle, and Iya and Ean in this fic.)
Also if you want to know who is what, Rhen is the incarnate of compassion, Talia wisdom, Mel luck, Stella love, Ingrid wickedness, and Myst hope. And of course, Iya is the goddess incarnate.
On Pacts
Pacts are magical contracts that offers life and power to those who make them. A pact can be made between two or more people, and involves having the contractees' souls merge as one. A pact takes what is most precious to the contractee as the price.
Regardless of whether what is most precious to the contractee is a physical object, another person, or a concept, the pact price affects the contractee's body in a way that will change the way they interact with this most precious thing.
The degree to which the souls merge vary from pact to pact. While I never got to talk about this much, Rhen and Lars' merged soul is fully integrated, while Te'ijal and Galahad's isn't.
Because Te'ijal and Galahad's merged soul isn't fully integrated, and they have been pact partners for longer, they are able to use their pact benefits powers, namely super speed for Te'ijal and super strength for Galahad.
And because Rhen and Lars' merged soul is fully integrated, they cannot do much if they disagree with each other. And because they are new pact partners, they kept mourning for what they lost, ended up frustrating each other, and failed to notice their new abilities until later on.
Whether Rhen made the pact because Ahriman's forces did a half-hearted job of "killing" her, or because she instinctively knew she would be the last incarnate of the era, or because she simply wanted to see Dameon again, I honestly do not know.
On Plot Threads
Smaller details such as Lars curling up next to dragon Rhen when they sleep, dragon Rhen very dragging Lars around to where she needs him to be, and Lars and Rhen having to deal with being seen as a dragon master and his pet didn't make it to the summary post, but it's something I think about.
Galahad has a full blessed armor from head to toe and it comes with a helmet. On the day his King banished him, he had come before the throne without his helmet on and was escorted away dropping said helmet behind. Hence, Galahad's head is the only part of him that's vulnerable to attacks.
I never got to talk about this as well because it wasn't too important in the big picture, but Lars in this AU travelled the world to escape his overbearing mother. His hometown is located in a country facing an economic crisis, in which owning slaves has become popular so people can cut labor costs. As such, he doesn't mind harming others to get what he wants or needs. In fact, he even enjoys the act of torturing people so he can distract himself from his situation. Along his journey with Rhen, he learned that his hometown was besieged, but he decided to ignore this news in favor of honing his abilities. Besides, he's in too deep aiding the incarnates' mission and he's too proud to back down.
There was no space for me to discuss this too, but Ean was an elf from the Vale and became in charge of recruiting people into the resistance force. Uthar's supposedly part of that army, but he wasn't important enough and I was throwing around too many names at this point in the story. I've no idea if he survived or not. As for Ean, he definitely physically aged a little bit.
Also, while Lars regained his speech, his voice is very hoarse and it actually hurts him to speak a lot, just like how Rhen is no longer fully nymph-like. It doesn't bother Lars too much, though; he's gotten used to being quiet, and the only other person patient enough to seriously consider his opinions is someone he already shares his mindspace with.
As for the ending, I like to think Dameon lives and Rhen and Lars keep him around, and that a new religion dedicated to the entity Rhen and Lars is has been established.
