what do you think of astarion and a tav who is also a vampire? (both spawn and non-spawn, i guess. seeing someone with the same condition as you have a wildly different experience is certainly something, with goes double with the added stigma of vampirism in bg3.) would he be spiteful if tav was also a vampire but with a markedly better experience of ~spawnhood~? if they were a fully-fledged vampire? would this vary depending on age?
would just like to know ur thoughts :) thank u deeply for kindred! I look forward to reading it every time i see you update. it's wonderful work, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
anon. i need you to know. this message has plagued me since you sent it. i have been thinking of an au where i make auri a vampire bride before she and astarion ever meet. i've been thinking about making my new durge a vampire bride and that's how she breaks her oath.
anyway. it has Gripped Me.
i think it totally depends on what experience/what stage of vampirism the tav is, but no matter what, his feelings are Bad. if the spawn is better-adjusted/had better spawnhood, astarion resents them. if they had it similar or somehow worse, he would find them pathetic, methinks, particularly if they have any shred of self-pity.
i don't know that age would play a factor particularly, but -- if you ever feel comfortable coming off anon, i'd love to credit you for the idea if you'd allow me to incorporate it someday in some way <3
and thank you, really. kindred has grown in scope in a way that i could have never imagined. i'm so thankful you took a chance on me and my work. i'll never be grateful enough.

kinda weird trans tangotek headcanon: given minecraft spawning/breeding mechanics, most mobs don't really... have a concept of gender, in the sense of sexual reproduction and roles relating thereof BUT nether-dwelling mobs in general have a set of binary roles and traits that are culturally assigned to Hot/Cold. It's not necessarily a personally assigned role, sometimes it's locally assigned. You act in certain ways and do certain things in a Hot place and do different things in a Cold place, and Cold places can cause changes to you that may or may not be irrevocable(see: striders vs piglins/hoglins and their zombified counterparts) and it's somewhat less rigid than Player ideas of gender, bc the exact threshold of Hot/Cold varies across both species and individuals (striders are Very Very Very Hot; some piglins zombify if they go to cooler places in the nether (naturally spawned zombie piglins) while other piglins only zombify when they enter the Very Cold Overworld)
anyway, TangoTek may or may not be trans by human standards, but as far as the nether dwellers are concerned, for all intents and purposes, building the Deepfrost Citadel and becoming Dungeon Master was an act of him transing his gender.
GOD HELLO ANON I LOVE THIS SO MUCH. the nether worldbuilding that we were sorely missing right here. this also resonates with what i wrote in my trans hcs document which is just "tango - trans"
i can imagine someone else who is a netherborn or just Knows About this stuff coming into decked out and being like "I Know What You Are" and tango is like "i transificated my gender" (canon)
the deepfrost citadel is also so important to both tango and the hermits which feels so beautiful to me because by inviting them in and sharing it with them hes also sharing such a like. integral part of himself. something that is Big for him that they wont exactly understand because of cultural regional species differences. but he still wants them there in whatever way will work. the joy of creation!! the joy of sharing it with your friends!! the joy of transing your gender!!
also im so obsessed with thinking ab how this affects other nether dwellers. im especially obsessed with thinking ab how this came about like evolutionary wise which i wont get far into thinking ab but. it will be in the back of my brain. god and like what is the culture surrounding this, are nether dwellers who change easier based on temp viewed any differently by others (whether positive or negative), how does each species view these changes?? yeah. god. very cool. thank u very much for sharing this.

Oops, looks like tumblr bit a random chunk out of my Phil lore ask - it's supposed to say: "Father status varies depending on server/fanon but generally ranges anywhere from biological or adoptive father of one-to-three (Wilbur Soot, Tommyinnit, Technoblade) (order of most likely to be his kid. Semi-canon sibling order is generally Techno oldest and/or twins with Wilbur with Wilbur being the younger twin and then Tommy youngest) though sometimes more (usually Tubbo and Ranboo, who are almost always adopted. Philza specifically found Tubbo in a box). On the Dream SMP specifically he also has a canonical grandson through Wilbur (Fundy) (and adoptive grandson, the NPC Michael, through Tubbo and Ranboo) (…and adoptive great-grandkids through Fundy again)"
Anyways his hardcore streams are probably the best place to start with Phil, since they're super chill and there isn't much of a story to catch up on since it's not an RP world, just misc shenanigans and in-jokes that you can pick up pretty quickly. Origins SMP is also very fun and some of the other members do upload videos to youtube about it so you can probably use that to get an idea of what's going on. The major swaths of his DSMP character you can probably glean through the Sad-ist animations, but the Extremely Rough Overview is basically "Philza Minecraft, Wilbur's dad. Wilbur dies, he is sad. Lives with Techno, he is glad. Spawns withers with Techno, he is bad? Destroys a country. Half-adopts a half-enderman. Joins a book club. Niki Nihachu is there. Phil's basement is a Bleach reference, just like everything else about him. Big Wife."
Glad you enjoyed my silly Phil lore recap though! He is a very fun chill streamer. Quality bird man 10/10.
Oh!!! Fair fair :D thank you for the update!!!!!
I SUPER APPRECIATE THE LORE UPDATE!!!!!! I LOVE TALKING TO PEOPLE I WOULD PAY SOMEONE TO INFODUMP AT ME ABOUT MCYT LORE HAHAHAH
Thank you again!!! I'm gonna look some streams on after work tomorrow and vibe a little I think!!! I can see an (unofficial??) Vod channel so that reassures me hahahha
When streamers don't upload things it feels like such a barrier to entry (LOOKING @ U OLI IM SO GLAD I CAUGHT ALL THE EMPIRES VODS BEFORE THEY DISAPPEARED), esp bc my timezone means it's haaaard for me to catch a lot of streams (Jimmy streams at like 3am in my timezone usually for example 🥲)
STILL I AM BABBLING gonna put on some vibes n see how it goes!!!! Thank you!!! :]

ao3 homestuck literature roundup
ok so honestly some of the most impactful pieces of literature I’ve ever consumed... have been fanworks for the web comic Homestuck. while fanfiction in general has the potential for greatness, and there are definitely some non-homestuck works out there i that i’ve enjoyed, Homestuck has a unique potential for spawning creative, original and daring stuff! and there are so many new fans who didn’t even experience the first wave of ao3 webcontent. sadly the site has not proved archival quality when it comes to preserving content, and many fics I’m linking feature broken links/images or have been orphaned by their authors. I’m posting only what I consider to be Good Literature. these are pieces of writing that have struck me, haunted me, and made me cry. Thank you to the writers, and please enjoy! the full rec list is under the cut >:)
old but gold
The Serendipity Gospels by urbanAnchorite (tzm) M
What is there to be said about The Serendipity Gospels? this illustrated fanfiction epic is a true classic. The use of Homestuck language and troll terminology on this fic is exploited to its utmost poetic potential, and every sentence is lyrical. While the story itself is original (and extremely well plotted!), events from the plot of Homestuck are echoed throughout, and it makes for a really satisfying read. This fic was published before Gamrezi was something that happened in the webcomic and gamzee had his downfall, if you’re hesitant to read it on account of the Gamzee<3<Terezi tag. Both of them are extremely well characterized. man... serendipity gospels gamzee is the best gamzee you can find on the market. definitely better than canon gamzee. And the pairing really works. The sad part is that this thing was supposed to be in three acts, and only two have been published. Since 2013... this shit sucks. i want act 3 so bad i’d commit heinous acts to receive it >:0
Cities in Dust (shit let's be hardboiled) by Cephied_Variable T
I’m not finished reading this yet but by now the ao3 handle Cephied_Variable has become a household name. This fic is... heterosexual. and where there were once illustrations, now there are empty white boxes. But the noir setting is played juuuust right, the soundtrack goes hard and it’s really fun to play the music in the next tab while you read, the writing is amazing (obviously) and... not to spoil anything, but it isn’t as much of an AU as it seems. really wish i could see the illustrations, bc the story is told through chatlogs like the source material.
Rule #2 by universe_c E (you can skip the sex scenes tho)
A super imaginative take on what Earth C might have been like. this fic was published while the comic was still updating, so earth c was a very distant possibility in the minds of fans, and in this work, all the players (every single troll, dancestor, human and cherub) are dropped on an uninhabited planet as an entirely new species with varying levels of godpowers, and they have to build civilization from scratch. It’s such an ambitious idea, and it was pulled of brilliantly! the author has more fanfiction online in that takes place in this universe, as well as selections featuring pairings such as Caliborn/Kurloz, an unexpected delight, and GamTav, a charming holdover from simpler times. This story in particular however focuses on Caliborn right after he passes through the gate. He doesn’t have a very easy time adjusting, poor guy. The narrative follows him as he rage-flees from his emotions to nonlinear points on the timeline of Universe C. Along the way he meets the family who he will someday love, learns about the civilization that will develop on their planet, gets laid, and matures a whole lot as a person. This fic is just.. really amazing. Read it!!!
Lost Teeth Like White Jewels by roachpatrol, urbanAnchorite (tzm)
Ok, so roachpatrol used to be a really big name in Homestuck fanfiction, but her stuff has... not aged well, and generally she is regarded (or at least she is regarded by me) as a pedophilic porn peddler, and she’s written a lot of nasty,  scandalous smut. but you don’t have to read that stuff! This fic and this fic ONLY (don’t even read the other ones in the series, bro) is just a really nice soap opera. Bodices are ripped, eyes are gazed into in close proximity to an ocean. And the hemospectrum has been inverted. All in all, if you want something dramatic and romantic to read on a rainy day, this fic is where it’s at.
signalbeam is an author that wrote a lot of lesbian fanfiction in 2012. I haven’t personally read all their stuff but it’s all f/f and it’s fun to browse :~)
****DIRKJAKE CORNER******
a thousand years by venusianEye (orphan_account) T
Everything’s set for the surviving players to pass through the gate and claim their Reward... the only problem is, dirk has lost the will to live and is in some kind of mystical coma. Jake is the only person who can save him, by venturing into his mind-palace and solving puzzles that serve as metaphors for everything Dirk can’t express. It’s kind of like inception wrt to the dream mechanics, but the author uses folk tales as settings, and it’s all very poetic, and very well done. this author deleted her account. i watched all the drama. however all her work is still online on the orphan_account. she wrote this series (people who like dirkjake and artistic pornography, give it a read!) and also a medievalstuck au i remember reading and loving, but cannot for the life of me seem to find :( it was about eridan and kanaya and it was good. rest in peace, venusianEye!
A Spark, A Flame, A Fire by callmearcturus E (one skippable sex scene)
The best kingdomstuck ever!!! \(^o^)/  ugh this fic is everything... the author has another kingdomstuck dirkjake multichapter novella online that is also very good, but this one’s my absolute fave :,] the strilonde fam is so cute, and dirk&jake’s blossoming romance (oh, yeah, you BET it’s an arranged marriage AU!) is so romantic it literally makes me clutch my chest and sigh. also the writing and worldbuilding are just IMPECCABLE. another lovely romance for a cozy night.
***JOHNKAT CORNER****
remember johnkat? well,. it’s good.
General Vantas Gets Hitched, or, The Limits Of Bilateral Diplomacy: A Black Powder Romance by JumpingJackFlash M
another arranged marriage fic! seriously, when it’s done right, there can be nothing better. John is the king of Skaia and Karkat is a political insult disguised as a peace offering. No better way to ruin your chances at diplomacy than offer an arranged political marriage between the literal king and a mutant military grunt who isn’t even the right gender. But... what if the king accepts??? omg guys they fall in love... and everyone’s a badass. another notable johnkat offering from his author would b Hurricane , wherein everyone’s punks and dave and tavros are gay rappers. there’s also Space Bro and California Dreaming , which feature karkat/sollux and eridan/equius respectively, and are humanstuck au with vague game memories and are both very sweet and romantic <3
The Only Recipe For Lasagna You'll Ever Need by urbanAnchorite (t_ZM) G
Oh man.. this one’s just really cute.
No Quiet Sleeper by cest_what T
The premise of this fic is a stable little timeloop, so homestuck i could cry, and what occurs therein is extremely adorable :3c
modern fanfiction (post epilogues)
Pilot Light, Pale Rapture by purplebard G
Excellent post-epilogues Jade fic! The writing is beautiful, it’s a really genuine and melancholy work. A masterpiece in JadeDavepeta. I also give a blanket recommendation for all of this author’s fanfic -- it’s deeply original and flawlessly written, every piece!
House of Dirk by IMAC T
If you haven’t read House of Dirk... seriously, read House of Dirk. It’s a modern classic. A dadaist, genre-reconstructive, trope-subverting and absolutely hilarious MASTERPIECE!!! and the characterizations are pitch-perfect. this fanfiction can be cited as the spark which ignited the roaring inferno of Dirk/Caliborn shippers who can now be found online ^__^
mare in ossibus nostris dormit (in our bones sleeps the sea) by liobi
Just some really awesome scourge sisters :,) i love a nice romp through troll mother planet, and this is a flawlessly executed no-game AU.
JADE ROUTE by spicyyeti/muthahomestuckah T
Not technically a fanfiction, because this is 100% a comic, but if you want to read about Homestuck characters in a way that is engaging, innovative, touching and hilarious, you gotta read Jade Route! It’s the best thing that happened to jade since squiddles! the art is REALLY GOOD the characterization is REALLY GOOD god.. i love jade route.
BONES OF BLACK MARROW by oxfordRoulette E
an innovation in dirkjake pornography. this fic will make your head split open, and most of it is pornography of an exceptionally raunchy color. Basically, Dirk summons a demon (Jake) for stupid reasons and it fucks both of their lives up. Incredible work with formatting by the author, seriously who can even code like that, and i love the magical mechanics :) it’s very well researched and it really tears both Dirk and Jake to pieces psychologically. through porn.
Timaeus, Testified by sendificating NR
another fic that uses experimental formatting. It’s all about Dirk and it’s REALLY SO AMAZING.... a detailed and inventive psychological opus.

-
Also.... i write fanfiction. sometimes. can’t vouch for the quality but i would be remiss as an author if i didn’t plug . well, that’s all for tonight, folks! hope u find something to read!

Relationship Status: A widower still obsessed with his monsters and his creator but she just wont see him in such a way rip the man
PHYSICAL APPEARANCE
Height: 6’6 Weight: 160 pounds in human form, his dark form varies in weight Figure/build: Tall, stocky built. His muscle is primarily in his arms, legs, and chest, with a faintly noticeable gut (lowkey dad bod) Hair color: Black, peppered with grey strands Hairstyle: keeps it medium length but professional, Eye color:  A deep orange Skin/fur colour: His skin is a sandy beige complexion littered by dark discolored scars. Having tiger features, he has inverted colors with black fur and white stripes. Tattoos: Neikan’s branding is on his left inner forearm. Preferred style of clothing: In a button up collared shirt and black dress pants, coupled with his lap coat, He never really goes anywhere without his labcoat. He has no real sense of.. Dressing casual. If not his lab coat, he still wears a kind of trenchcoat in some way. And suspenders for a touch of extra class
HEALTH
Bad Habits: -Cant form real human connection - sees everything as object variables to dissect ,explore, and use for experimentation. - Regularly abuses the fuck out of the other negatives because they are inferior idiots - Sociopathic murderer (“for Science”). -Obsessed with Neikan, the demon who created him, and will turn on anyone in her defense, friend or foe. -Views any personal connection to a person like having a pet you're fond for, but nothing is above Neikan. -Stress smoker.
Addictions: -Sexually infatuated by the color purple, - Takes Sadistic pleasure in watching the bold break down, - Gets off on taking control and causing pain in the act of intimacy.
PERSONALITY
Personality: Toruga is a deceptive man by nature, a demon conjured up and hand made by Neikan herself, inspired by Josef Mengele which she had seen in the lives of one of her vessels. Being based on the mad doctor, Toruga himself is brilliant in the fields of genetics, biology, and the anatomy of anything he can get his hands on. Despite the basis, Toruga is simply a being that never was a child, thus has formed a persona that imitates human emotion and relations to get his way. He doesn't feel true connection, he doesn't feel empathy, sympathy, or guilt for what he does, as long as it feeds into the goal of appeasing his mistress and furthering her goals. Which makes lying and altering his persona to the liking of his associates quite easy. Toruga presents himself like a fatherly figure -- even tempered, soft but confidently spoken, and constantly utilizing praise and interest in another when he’s looking to make nice. He’s a master of manipulation and will not hesitate to research a person’s history, or gauge a weakness from conversation alone, and exploit it if it makes them more agreeable or himself more appealing.   He doesnt respond to insults or physical attacks,  not a single thing in the world bothers him, save for the failure of the negatives to complete a task, or if the insult is directed at his mistress. Or if it is impeding his work, because that would make him unappealing to Neikan. Only then will he react. And he will do so swiftly and violently to make his point known. He is not afraid of death threats, or to be beaten or dismembered or tortured, because of his inability to die (Thanks to his connection to Neikan. For as long as she lives, he can) He finds those sorts of threats mildly amusing, because he has been here for centuries, and he will continue to be well after humanity is nothing more than bones and Ash beneath their feet. His personality can swivel on a dime, but overall he is a fairly pleasant person to interact and talk with. He;s had plenty of time to master human expression.  Toruga also tends to be very physical when he shows interest, with subtle touches, unbroken eye contact, and closeness. Its simply the spider tossing the silk of his webs to capture the poor fly that has no idea the fate to come. He can be incredibly jealous and spiteful when it comes to what diverts the attention of his mistress
Strengths: Determined, Even tempered, charming personality. Incredibly intelligent and gifted with holding conversations. A great asset if you need a doctor to work on any sort of viral or bacterial bioweapon, or if ya need a guy that likes to alter and play with mortal genetics. His inability to stay permanently dead makes him quite the threat in theory, and with that demonic origin he does have supernatural strength compared to the average mortal. He has no real blood, just inky mass of dark matter that makes up his form and drips in imitation blood.
Weaknesses: Neikan. Divine weaponry and magic also hurt like a bitch and would require he directly return to neikan to get fixed up.
Fears/phobias: Failing Neikan to the point she abandons him or makes another negative to replace him.
Favourite color:
P U R P L E
Did I say purple?  Very important to know. And any shade that compliments it.
Hobbies: - Kidnapping subjects indiscriminately based on their viability and their chance of being pursued, disfiguring them, wiping their memory, and then using them as test subjects for his viral bioweapon projects. - Making handmade clothing for his test subject children. He’s quite the skilled tailor. He especially loves dressing up his daughter before she ran away - Traveling about to meet with and work closely with assorted allies towards an end goal of toppling human society and shifting power - Taking out his anger and frustration on the negatives because they dont die - Talking to his dead husband he keeps perfectly preserved in a case down in his lab
Theme Song: - “Pet” by perfect circle - “Trust me” from the Devil’s Carnival
SKILLS
Talents/skills: - Tailoring clothing of all materials - Extensive knowledge of the medical field - skilled virologist and biochemist - Manipulative - Skillful liar
Education: Multiple lifetimes of trial and error through multiple dimensions and a variety of different levels of technology he’s explored with. Lacking any formal training, being an extension of his mistress means he also inherits the knowledge of her vessels. Coupled with his own experimentation and studied through multiple worlds.
Abilities: Being a demon made of dark matter means he’s endowed with an assortment of natural abilities, however unlike the more well known hell spawn demons, the negatives and their abilities from Neikan are typically only physical based.  Those abilities include: - Enhanced Strength and Endurance (built up after years of handling monsters, and the lack of human limitations/strains on the body) - Complete Regeneration (as long as the weapon is not enchanted or by divine means) - Minor shapeshifting, limited to his true forms. From human, to the black mass in the shape of a man, to a beastial tiger form - A photographic and auditory memory that retains just about any information he finds worthy of withholding. It also allows him to learn any language with ease after being exposed to it for a period of time
FAMILY, FRIENDS AND FOES
Personal history: Created around the time period of Pride’s((The Vessel) lifetime, 6 vessels prior to Nikki, Toruga was formed at first out of curious reasons and the need for a friend, but her intent with him became malicious shortly after her grief in the following life which split her soul into two halves. Left with nothing but malice and hatred for humanity, with the worst aspect of her being, Neikan utilized all her negativity to create a figure that would help speed up the process of ending the lives of the future vessels. Toruga was based on Josef Mengele, which Neikan had been exposed to as a child through the eyes of her second vessel, Hate. The demon was never a child, born as a perfectly capable adult to keep this young grieving woman company, it was at the start of his existence which paved the way to his obsessive love for his Creator. Toruga was her friend, her pet project that she left responsible with overseeing any of her new creations were given a job and set in order. While not active at first, Toruga observed humanity from the distance and learned the art of imitating them perfectly to blend in and manipulate what he understood. He studied their texts, he studied their culture, the array of species, their anatomies, their science and their technologies, absorbed it all until he could put it to use at the very end. Toruga is in love with his mistress, but with her fixation on her vengeance and the delicate heartbreak, she refuses to see him in such a way. Which, in turns, drives his unyielding determination to please her to make her see him. Coming to the existence of the last vessel, Nikki, things got complicated. Neikan assigned him a task to make a malleable beast that can infiltrate, a living machine to be the wolf in sheep's clothing, so when the last life became known, this being would be sent to kill it. Unfortunately for them, that bio weapon became the last life. Once inheriting Neikan and all the previous lives, any of the previous wiring he had instilled in the fetus were completely wiped away with the new presence of thought and free will -- the result, which would send Toruga on a wild chase to retrieve his experiment , all the way back to Earth. He spends years having to establish bases and connections on earth, all while scouring for his little project, taking well over 10 years before finally finding her. When he eventually does kidnap her and attempt to reset her mentally, Nikki retaliates and flees, leaving him with the iconic face scar he has now, but his project was now an unstable mess.
Toruga is a man who juggles many projects at once. Despite a singular failure, he is always looking to make improvements, which would have eventually led to the creation of Malakaid as a failsafe to getting rid of Nikki, then immediately lost after yet another raid by Rosie and the authorities. But there is no stopping, there is always alternatives to getting what he wants. His web is vast, his determination and will unyielding. The world will fall to his mistress, one way or another. As of now, Toruga works closely with a variety of associates, primarily the Branches of Virtues because of their plentiful assets, and acts as a kind of apostle for Neikan to gain more souls willing to join their cause. His main project is a viral mutagen called the Uxoru virus, and helping work towards a modified super soldier serum made from Angel’s blood.
Parents names: Neikan Shadou (Sheila Lunarcrest)
Siblings: The other negatives, including John, Sebura, Kura, and Joku. By technicality, anyone made by Neikan is a kind of sibling.
Relationship with siblings: Toruga is the head honcho of the show, responsible for directing and punishing the others for their failures. Their stupidity and clumsiness prove to be incredibly irritating to him, and because they cant die he has no hesitation in brutally maiming and abusing them for it. They all have a bitterness, but a respectful fear towards him, and he knows it well. None of them are his equal, for he was the first, and he intends to keep it that way.
Partner/Spouse: -Vermont (Former husband, now deceased. Murdered mistakenly by Toruga himself after Vermont questioned Neikan’s intentions and plans. )
Children:
- Nikki Ai (His first experiment, artificially created and planted within a mother. She has no recollection of him as her creator, but rather this monster that hunts her down. She never came back as she was suppose to, and thus is a nuisance he needs dead)
- Malakaid (The second improvement to Nikki’s design , made from Nikki and Jacob’s dna, spliced with his own. Malakaid was stolen as a baby by Rosie and imprinted on her. Because of this, he will not go back to Toruga.)
( From his relationship with Vermont)
- Veronica Winchester (Eldest daughter, ran away at 12 years old.)
- Toby Winchester ( A young boy, still living with him. He drags him around on his work trips when he’s able to. Because he witnessed his birth parent murdered as a toddler, Toby is practically a skittish mute of a boy that fears his father but will not dare leave the way his sister did.)
Enemies:
Basically got beef with everyone bcuz he probably fucked over your loved ones at some point and just doesn't recall it. He primarily has enemies with Rosie( A very personal vendetta) and the Angel Project, the Divine Calvary, and any enemies of the Branches of Virtues. He doesn’t try to make enemies but if people are gonna try to stop him from completing his work because its “unethical” and “Inhumane” then a bitch gonna go into the cage with the rest of the subjects. But he’s a hard man to hate because as long as you are blissfully ignorant, he seems like such a pleasant man to keep company with.
Associates:
- The Branches of Virtue
- Nathair Elerdand
- Neikan and the Negatives
Affiliated verse:
Tag: :The Good Doctor (Toruga):
- Iniquitous Essence (The info above)
- Pokeverse : Toruga is a scientist of the Aether foundation , working on a secret specialized project for Lusamine, to create a world where human and pokemon are one -- as halflings. He experiments using genetic information gathered from the ultra beast data, along with splicing human dna with that of Pokemon, varying from adults to unborn fetuses. Everyone of which failed (dying in a matter of months, if born. Dying and resulting in a stillbirth. Or death induced by the Human body rejecting the intrusive genetics and triggering a shut down response) until finally there was Rosie. He studied her for the entirety of her childhood, a secret success he dare not report until certain she would not die like the rest, only to be lost in a fire (as far as he knows) aimed at silencing her rowdy father.
Much to his dismay, Toruga continues his research on human genetics, milking the foundations of its assets to feed his curiosity, with no real loylty to anyone but himself. But those skulligans are a promising bunch of nobodies to utilize for testing. He’s on the hunt to get his pet project back

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is a game that you might have missed. Even if you didn’t skip over the Wii U console generation, it could have easily fallen to the wayside amongst more popular entries such as Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U before it or Splatoon or Super Mario Maker after it. In fact, Captain Toad’s whole existence owes itself to its “predecessor” Super Mario 3D World, which included the very concept of this game as miniature levels or sidequests within it. As a result, if you’ve played the Mario title, you already have a rough idea of what to expect from Captain Toad.
FULL DISCLOSURE Nintendo Australia has graciously provided us with a review copy of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.
Thankfully, Captain Toad offers a little bit more than the experience from the Mario game before it, though admittedly not a great deal more. It naturally had to include boss battles because now there’s a Mario-esque “story” behind it as Captain Toad and co-star Toadette collect Power Stars. It expanded upon its original mini-levels by having a shooter-on-rails mechanic as well as coin-collection levels. And it’s borrowed somewhat heavily from Super Mario 3D World by pulling in the Double Cherries, Dash Panels, Beep Blocks, and more. It’s as much an extension of Super Mario Galaxy as Super Mario Galaxy 2 was… except without the actual Mario jumping and fast platforming.
Captain Toad borrows heavily from Super Mario 3D World with the inclusion of power-ups and items.
Cute and charming puzzle-solving
Captain Toad is a perfect game for the Nintendo Switch. (Though really, what game isn’t?) Captain Toad is all about bite-sized content in tiny stages, and the portable nature of the Switch means you can jump in, play a few levels, and then get back to whatever you were doing.
And the game is a lot cuter than I originally expected. I admit I chuckle a bit whenever I see Captain Toad appear in the various Mario games, from Super Mario Galaxy and onward. Seeing the little cutscenes with the captain is actually cute and endearing, even though his high-pitched squeaks can get a bit old by the game’s end.
The nature of Captain Toad tends to be more pause-and-think rather than hurry-up-and-go.
Where Captain Toad veers distinctively from its Mario origins is the fact that this is more of a puzzle game than a platformer. The game does have platforming involved within it, but the nature of the game tends to be more pause-and-think rather than hurry-up-and-go. That’s par for the course because the level’s objective is usually in plain sight — similar to the one-screen levels found in Super Mario Maker. However, another part of this originates from the fact that you can’t see the entire level in a single glance. You need to rotate your view around as parts of the level will obscure other parts, especially the underground bits. Even then, there are a few secret areas that won’t even be revealed until you actually encounter them, leaving the huge potential for hidden treasures and coins everywhere.
The world will start off seeming so very simple…
…but a simple twist of the stage opens up so many more possibilities.
Despite the general pause-and-think strategy omnipresent in the game, Captain Toad does force you into quick thinking quite often. Enemies such as Goombas and Shy Guys, once they detect you, will give quick chase. And given the captain’s inability to jump, your standard mechanism for clearing out enemies is gone. To replace that, Captain Toad — in a throwback to the American Super Mario Bros. 2 — can hoist turnips out of the ground and chuck them at enemies. However, turnips are far and few between and generally only spawn once, so you either have to be accurate or fast on your feet! The mine cart levels also require quick thinking; while you never have to worry about enemies in these levels, the levels become coin ruins, and you have to shoot targets quickly to maximize your coin count and/or complete your secret missions.
The game itself is divided into multiple episodes — three in total with a set of post-game bonus levels beyond it. It’s important to remember this after you defeat the first 18 levels and arrive at the end credits; the game isn’t over yet! It’s in episodes two and three where you play as Toadette (and later as both characters) as you chase down Wingo, the game’s avian nemesis.
It’s not just about waddling around enemies. There’s also rail-shooter segments.
Is Captain Toad really worth the investment?
So it merits saying that Captain Toad isn’t your Breath of the Wild or Super Mario Odyssey. Unless you’re a hardcore completionist, it’s not going to offer you the hundreds of hours of gameplay that the other titles on Nintendo Switch have to offer. Thankfully it doesn’t have to be either of the two games thanks to its price point. In North America, the game is being sold at $40 as opposed to $60, while in Australia it’s being sold at A$60 instead of A$90. And given that the Switch is full of like-minded titles such as Shovel Knight, Golf Story, and countless more, it’s in good company.
Overall, Captain Toad is relatively easy, but 100%ing the game takes much more effort.
It’s reasonable to ask whether or not this game is for you. Captain Toad is like the Kirby series when it comes to difficulty: If you consider yourself decent at playing modern video games, then you should find navigating the 60-odd levels of the main quest a relative breeze. Some levels are more involved than others, and some of the later levels involve a few more timing challenges or tricky spots that require a little more finesse, but you won’t see too many Game Over screens despite the game not inundating you with 1-Up Mushrooms at every chance.
That said, the challenge of the game starts to rapidly increase once you consider all of the optional challenges the game throws at you in order to 100-percent the game. Each of the stages in the main quest has three diamonds in it that need collecting, and failing to collect a sufficient number of these will start locking you out of the game’s bonus content after the main story. Furthermore, each stage has two additional challenges. The first is a simple hide-and-seek game with a pixelated Toad hiding on one of the level’s walls; in the Wii U version of this game, this only could be accessed as amiibo-activated content, but now it’s built into the game itself. Secondly, and more deviously, each level has a bonus mission, and achieving these can actually be quite difficult. It’ll take solid persistence to crack each auxiliary mission in the game.
That said, if you already owned and played Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on the Wii U, it’s not worth getting the Switch version. With the exception of the hide-and-seek games no longer being locked behind amiibo, the only Switch-exclusive content is four additional bonus levels that are generally inspired by Super Mario Odyssey. These levels actually replace the Super Mario 3D World-themed bonus levels from the Wii U version, and as before you can’t play these levels until you go through the game’s storyline. Each of the four new levels is based upon one of the various kingdoms of Odyssey — namely the Cascade, Sand, Metro, and Luncheon Kingdoms. They’re cute fun, but it’s not much to merit a second purchase.
The adaptation from the Wii U to Switch is actually quite ingenious.
Boss battles are still fun and progressively more challenging.
An underappreciated but solid game
I didn’t play Captain Toad on the Wii U, and I had originally made the conscious choice to skip it for Nintendo Switch as well. Before playing it, I had a pretty good idea of what the game was, and, to a large extent, I was correct. I thoroughly enjoyed playing it, don’t get me wrong, but it’s been a long time since I’ve made the effort to fully 100% any game I’ve owned. (I’ve got too much of a gaming backlog to spend time on that!) While I do appreciate the challenges in the game — and some of them were things to which I immediately said, “Challenge accepted!” — those challenges aren’t something that will drive me back to playing it over and over. But that’s just me; depending upon how you game, your mileage may vary.
But Captain Toad is still cute fun, and I think it’s actually a very good thing that Nintendo came and remade the game for the Nintendo Switch. It’s definitely a game I think didn’t get enough acclaim the first time around, so maybe its presence on Switch will give it a bit more luster.
Score Similarity to other Marios 8.5/10 Mario Vs. Donkey Kong – ★★★★☆ Super Mario 3D World – ★★★☆☆ Super Mario Bros. 2 – ★★☆☆☆ Super Mario Odyssey – ★☆☆☆☆

[Blog] Asks
Answering all of July’s asks here to reduce the number of posts.
okay this is ridiculous last month I made it to tier 16 round 400 without even hitting a wall (I mean besides the mental wall of grinding coli) and this month I’ve almost hit a flat brick wall at mid tier 15??? my most powerful medals only deal 1 damage and that’s including maximum buffs and +60% guilt
The base defences for the enemies were increased dramatically due to the strength of 7* medals. You’ll need those and medals with ground/aerial defence.
Now we're adding raid bosses with 15k health in Union cross so nobody can play alone, I see. Because scree you if your internet connection can't hold a group in Union cross I guess? Like I could turtle it but it's clear they're making it not worth anyone's time to play it alone and I'm really annoyed.
Once again, due to the 7* update, they’ve made everything incredibly bulky for the same rewards. We’ll just have to make do, I suppose.
I’ve seen tons of people saying that because of kex+/xex+ overwriting buffs that ea/dc aren’t good for them because they’ll overwrite the pet buffs you get on first cast but that’s actually not the case at all. I’ve noticed through watching people play and through pvp that people still retain all the positive buffs they get even after using them. They only overwrite buffs/debuffs that are detrimental to the player, thus making ea ideal with them for +counter and gauge restore
That’s right, the ability doesn’t affect the pet buffs or if the buff you already have is higher than what Kairi/Xion does. Yes, the real reason for getting extra attack on them is for the non-buff effects.
Do you know at which quests jewels start being distributed every 15, 10, then 5 quests? The new fast forward feature of story mode helps speed the mode up but also makes it harder to ensure you’re getting all the free jewels
Unfortunately, no. I think for 5 quests, it’s 1, 3, 5? Sometimes I think it’s been 1, 4, 5? I don’t know 10 at all. 15 quests is every 5 but you get 250 jewels each time which still adds up to 750.
You should have a rating on the banners on how good you think they are. It can help with people asking your opinion. Just a suggestion.
I’d rather not. Reasons include...
My rating will not apply to everyone.
I have bad judgement.
Got new phone so is it faster to install hd first or low quality then go over to hd? Thank.
The game will only download the assets you choose, else it will delete the set of assets that you don’t choose. Only download the quality you want. Don’t waste your bandwidth.
Hi! I have been wondering... if I pull a 6* Prime Medal and evolve it, it will be able to get 2000+ Chips and Dales like the mercy 7* one? Or only the last one? Thanks:3
It doesn’t matter how you get the 7* Prime medal for them to be upgraded to +2k strength/defence. Mercy, non-mercy, evolving, whatever.
Is the Phantom medal going to be reprinted?
I’m sure every non-time limited medal will be available again at some point.
do u kno where we can get deck advice in general for the org 13 events? i hate having to bother u about this ever month
Hard to give general advice when all the fights vary quite a lot. People often post their set-ups on Twitter, the KHUx subreddit and its Discord.
The toy story booster isn't being added to the bonus. Before the boosters were added to the percentage. Was something changed or is their an issue with that booster?
I haven’t seen anyone discuss this. The boosters aren’t added directly to the medal’s guilt. They’ll appear beside the guilt percentage with a blue flame icon.
can someone else challenge your position in pvp when you’re in the middle if a match?
No.
any idea if it’s possible to get puppy 7 without spawning trickmasters? their really hard to spawn
Besides the one time(?) Union Cross event, no.
Would you be so nice to translate the requirements for the new Daily Time Attack? Normally I get them by trial and error but when you have to unlock them all at once this gets confusing. Thank you.
Sorry, I didn’t do them because I didn’t think anyone would bother lol. I’ll post today’s in a following post.
