Transformers fans have been going over a new quarterly report and there’s good news and bad news. The former is Transformers is Hasbro’s strongest performing brand, the later is RotB and EarthSpark’s toy sales are stinkers. In particular, EarthSpark’s considered an underperforming product, with the show’s ratings in the smelting pool. As some of us anticipated, the second season is the most we’re gonna get, no third season or beyond.

So as much as some don’t want to hear it: EarthSpark is essentially a flop, and the second season coming at all is more because it’s too late to axe it.

What’s carrying the toys so far are the collector lines: Legacy and Studio Series. For better or for worse, do NOT doubt the power of nostalgia. Also pricing. A friend was telling me a parent audibly freaked out at the prices of the EarthSpark toys, so that’s keeping parents away.

Do kids still like Transformers? Well in my experience they do, but they largely liked G1, Prime, RiD15, Bayformers and Rescue Bots. They did NOT like Cyberverse (especially in Japan where I’m told toys are STILL rotting on shelves down there), and now apparently EarthSpark. I didn’t see RotB in theaters so I can’t speak for that, but I did see a lot of kids at Bumblebee when it was in theaters.

The easy answer on its failure, and we all know GriftTubers will latch on to it, is Nightshade. Transformers making it on to Fox News is NEVER a good thing… not helped as the owl continues to be controversial due to the Japanese dub deciding to make them male. (Personally I say split the difference if Nightshade ever reappears and make them he/they but still.) I’ve been clear on my stance that NS is fine and cool, but I’ve also placed more importance on their skills, interests and personality. Their gender is not important to me to get them to like them, but the unfortunate problem is too many people on both sides focus on their identity and it scared off normies and parents. Again, well meaning like the Blue’s Clues Pride Parade, but read the room. There was a way to make NS work and still let them be NB, but they didn’t do it, and I still say the old “they’re Terran because gender means nothing to them as a robotic life form” was the way to do it.

The more nuanced answer however is more complicated. ES wound up being another kids show that was actually for adult fans and not kids, choosing to instead focus on a sense of identity and HYUGE importance on family. Stuff that isn’t bad on its own, but most modern writers and executives don’t understand subtleties: resulting in a lot of Bludgeoning of well meaning ideas in a show that doesn’t feature the Master of Metallikato. Most kindergarten and elementary school kids aren’t THAT interested in that stuff, they like Pokémon, Mario, classic Disney, classic Star Wars and anime in my experience. And Transformers has a certain expectation among people, and while there’s been stuff in the past that involves talking about things (Rad having environmentalist tendencies and Optimus respecting his feelings on needing to protect the environment when a fire breaks out during a Mini-Con Panel hunt, with Tigatron, Optimus and Dinobot having a similar conversation more than once in Beast Wars), if the Autobots AREN’T waging their battle to destroy the evil forces of the Decepticons, most aren’t interested.

This feeds into the show’s writing which also I think killed it: the show’s writing is decent but it only gets weaker as it goes along. The overfixation on making the Decepticons into misunderstood bullies who need a hug, despite also showing them perfectly content to kill people, the mixed signals of all the known Earth Decepticons now being friends with the Maltos, Optimus being a doofus the longer the show went on, the heavy IDW slants that weren’t popular at all with general audiences like Autobot Megatron, and Fix Fic Blue Eyed TFP Starscream. There’s also lack of proper follow up on plot threads like Ravage and Mandroid’s friendship with Alex, Schloder’s reasoning for hunting Bee being stupid, mysterious Transformer artifacts, poor reasoning on Energon aliens running amuck, why Cybertron never re-established contact, the lack of understanding why Quintus Prime seems to have such an interest in Earth and why the Emberstone is even here at all and more. Sure some of this might be touched on better in season 2, but do I trust this writing team now? No. No I do not. I think this can be summed up by the rejected episode pitch with Ratchet and Drift. More focus was put on them being husbands, and while both tried offering their own reasonings for the Cyber Sleeves, there was no concrete answer provided on why the kids had the sleeves. Its especially odd in that I wager they would’ve played up Ratchet’s atheism from IDW, but never once have Quintus actually speak up through the sleeves, like a joke in Family Guy where Stewie calls out Brian’s atheism because Jesus crashed on their couch recently. The episode is just… more fluff. People don’t want fluff in Transformers, and we’re seeing that with how well the Energon Universe is continuing to kick everything’s afterburner in comics. IDW never did that. The best selling stuff towards the end was the Marvel G1 prequel and sequels, and the Beast Wars reboot and those were still low in the rungs.

So what can be done to get kids more on board with new TF content? Go back to basics. Transformers desperately needs a new Beast Wars style show to give it a kick in the pants tv show wise. Earthspark I think fancied itself as that but was not meant to be. The Energon Universe is a good start: the true Neo G1 successor to the 80’s cartoon canon so far. The easy joke me and a friend have made is to just adapt the Energon Universe for tv, but it’s not ready yet. I think using it as a spring board would be useful and having the Void Rivals be supporting characters would help expand their exposure. But the simple matter is this: absolutely under no circumstances use IDW/MTMTE post war stuff. I’m willing to go as far as using characters like Adaptus, Nova Prime, Nominus Prime and the Guiding Hand for certain things but that’s it. Classic good Autobots vs evil Decepticons. Megatron is full on evil like in G1, the movies & Unicron Trilogy: no more of this making him into a repentant Anakin nonsense. More of stuff like Optimus’s friendship with Sparkplug and Spike and his consoling of the deer. Earthspark was on the right track making him more lighthearted and closer to the well meaning dad he was in G1, but they pushed it too far the other way like Cyberverse did. Maybe ease back on Bumblebee a smidge, that worked with ROTB and Energon Universe so far, and other than maybe a little mixing and matching (Like Strongarm, Iguanus, Fixit, Barricade, Blackout and other guys being main Bots and Cons for a change), stick to the basics.

Edit: adding more because I had to go run an unexpected errand. Not only the basics, but let’s revisit the idea of a proper anime again. It’s the second major modern anime boom in the States, why DON’T we have a new RiD or Unicron Trilogy type thing? And no I refuse to consider Prime Wars and War For Cybertron anime. I don’t care what Netflix calls it. The fact we don’t have a TF anime currently is baffling; the last time we had an anime was Transformers Go!, and that was more of a one off spiritual Brave successor. I’d rather at this stage Takara commission a new kids anime for Transformers with writers over in Japan scripting the premise who know what they’re doing to make a fun children’s show. Then it can be dubbed and we get Blum, Kaplan, Zeno and other popular/veteran anime dub voice actors to reprise roles/do new ones. I don’t care if Trigger, Toei, Polygon, Science Saru or whoever animates it, my stipulation going forward is 2D animated TF anime, but with designs that are easier to hand draw. Like somewhere between G1 and Transformers Animated. I liked the Armada designs but I can see why Energon and Cybertron opted for CGI for the robots because they became way too technical to draw outside of very specific scenes. If full on 2D robots wasn’t acceptable, the CGI technology used for SSSS. Gridman and Bravern is acceptable, but a full return to 2D animation is preferable.

As for a setting: Earth. Autobots protecting their human friends against the Decepticons. A new gimmick properly implemented from the toys into the show, with the Quintessons as a villainous third party with a stake in the affairs, hiring Mercs like Devcon, RoughEdge, Lockdown and Rampage, or freelancers like the Skuxxoid and villainous Void Rivals to do their dirty work.

Something like that, but above all else cast wise: Blaster and his Cassettes MUST return. And to acknowledge EarthSpark, Hashtag can be his kid sister, with Twitch as one of Hashtag’s own cassettes. Everybody wins.

Number 10 for the Salty Asks?

I was definitely not a fan of the last season of Beast Wars, since they were essentially cramming two different arcs into the very last season.

You could argue that Transformers Prime did the exact same thing, but Season 3 still had an overarching plot of the Predacons while Season 2 had the overarching plot of the Iacon Hall of Records. Season 1 felt more of day to day building character with the Unicron prophecy coming out in the season finale. Season 3 for TFP did get shortened, which ultimately hurt the writing and the build up of the Predacons which ended up getting shunted aside. If TFP Season 3 had 26 episodes like Season 1 and 2, the Predacons would have stayed for longer. I can guarantee you that much.

But Season 3 of Beast Wars was doing way too much. There was the arc about those ancient aliens, which was talked about in previous seasons, but there was no real satisfying pay off with them. Not to mention they create a fusion of Tigatron and Airazor only to have them killed off in the next episode. Not to mention they also bring in the Covenant of Primus and start talking about prophecies immediately after those aliens are defeated. And the Covenant of Primus felt out of nowhere. Why didn't they just stick with the Disks? They were already well established within the lore of Beast Wars.

Not to mention the characters are such a downgrade. Rattrap and Rhinox don't get the same amount of screen time as they used to. I grew to hate Cheetor and his puberty stage. They bring back Dinobot as a clone. Don't even get me started on Silverbolt and Blackarachnia. We're gonna be here all day.

I really enjoyed seasons 1 and 2 of Beast Wars, but Season 3 was definitely doing way to much with two different arcs and it shows.

Examples: -Skids and Charlene. -Sludge really liked Joy Meadows. -Powerglide and Astoria Carlton-Ritz. -Seaspray and Alana. -Wheelie had feelings for Papika. -Starscream fell in love with Jenny's charms. -Jazz and Marissa Faireborn. -Bumblebee and Scarlett. -Glide is known to pick up cute human girls and ride them around in his motorcycle mode. -Sunstreaker drives faster if he smells Junko Shiragami's marigold-scented hair. -Paddles really liked Randall and Ed. -Brawn and Cover Girl got married and used various technologies to produce a human/cybertronian child. -Crankcase and CONS4EVA. -Rapticon and Ne'll. -Action Man tried to flirt with Arcee. -Tigatron and Snowstalker. -Possibly, Optimus Primal once fell in love with a female gorilla. -When Diver was singing, he attracted many female frogs because of his expectations. -Wheelie thought Mikaela Banes was hot and later turned his attention to Carly Spencer.

Tfp Optimus Prime: Optimus doesn't have anything bad to say about organic-Cybertronian relationships. He's just glad that there are open minded being out there in the universe.

Tfp Ratchet: While he isn't grossed out by hearing about the different relationships that exists he not that big on hearing about the details. he simply doesn't care to know the personal details of relationships. (unless of course the person happens to be friends with him)

Tfp Arcee: She thinks Organic- Cybertronian relationships are a little weird but there is nothing wrong with them. Arcee doesn't understand how they work and would be open to learning more about them.

Tfp Bumblebee: Bumblebee thinks its cool that people don't care about species when it comes to positive feelings (ex: love, friendship) He would ask questions about how a relationship would work on a deeper level but other than that as long as they (the people in the relationship) are happy he doesn't care.

Tfp Bulkhead: He's a little confused and weirded out at first not wanting to ask questions but eventually curiosity would get the best of him and he'd start learning.

Tfp Megatron: Megatron looks down on organics so for someone to be with an organic romantically he would look down on them to. he thinks Cybertronians are the superior race and should not lower themselves to such things.

Tfp Starscream: He finds the thought of those types of romantic relationships (humans and cybertronians) to be very gross. How can a Cybertronian lower their standards to the point of being willing to be involved with organics? he can not understand how some find humans attractive.

Tfp Soundwave: He understands the concept very well and isn't bothered by the different relationships there are. He doesn't really care about them and if he were to encounter such a relationship he would simply treat it like normal.

Tfp Shockwave: He doesn't see the point in interspecies relationships there is no logic in them. He would not approve of such a relationship but he also wouldn't out right try to destroy the relationship he has a very cold an indifferent attitude towards them.

TFP is an okay show, but not as dark as it pretends to be... Unlike other Transformers Shows, it doesn’t take actual risks... The only hero that dies in the show (Cliffjumper), dies at the very start and the teens didn’t even meet him ... In TFA Prowl + Blurr died... In Beast Wars, Dinobot + Tigatron + Airazor died... Also in TFA, Optimus temporarily died in front of Sari (who is younger than Jack/Miko/Raf)... You’d think a ‘darker’ show would have at least 1 Main Character death! 😱

Wait Wasn't TFA was going to being back Blurr to life with Sari in season four yet for some reason keep Prowl you know dead... with that In mind . the darkest transformers show may actually be beast wars by default.. because as far as I know the show haven't being anybody back from the dead.

Transformers Siege (WFC) character review!(2/2)

Red Alert!!;

He was more involved with Elita’s team towards the end of season two. I wasn’t gonna talk about him, but looking back- Red Alert is not only a FINE piece of ass, not only does he get a good one liner involving his own name, but this dude just fucks. Like he's got that vibe. 7/10 for sexy doctor vibes and contributing to shit to the team.

Ultra Magnus!!;

Okay, Ultra Magnus kinda swapped roles in the same way Skyfire does. As in, his relationship with Megatron is a LOT like Optimus’s and Megatron’s relationship in tfp. As in, Ultra Magnus still cares for Megatron so much, he becomes Megatron’s prisoner, and even refuses to shoot him. He’s stubborn, but in a noble sense. 7/10, because he gave Megatron such a middle finger before he died, and I love it when a character does that.

Sound Blaster!!;

This dude was in ONE episode. And I loved him in it. You kidding? Big boss dude that has a Soundwave complex from being one of his clones? Loved him. Good colors, pretty good voice, and I kinda wished he was a recurring bad guy, because mob boss characters just fucking get to me. 7/10.

Peg leg!!;

Not his official name, and he’s a minor character. But I still wanna talk about him, because of the ark he plays in Megatron’s story. To cut it short, Peg Leg was a bot who worked at one of the power plants for Megatron, and he was SO devoted to him. Like he REALLY felt the cause with him, felt as if Megatron was some sort of savior to him. Seriously, this episode, this CHARACTER, gave me so much angst, it really, REALLY hurt to see him essentially be killed off for Megatron’s plan. He’s cute, I love him, he’s IMPORTANT to Megatron’s story, 8/10, still not fucking over it.

Skylynx!!;

Another character that only came out in one episode, I still wanted to address him and his ark for Optimus. He wanted to carry the Matrix, but because he was acting the hell up, Alpha Trion sent him to unspace, where he spent who knows how long reflecting on his actions. Because of this, he was able to help Optimus think, reflect, and make his way out of unspace in order to find the allspark. The episode in question was honestly kinda huge for Optimus, and I really appreciate a proud character being made to be so humble for this situation. 7/10.

Dinobot!!;

The guy we were ALL fucking excited about when he was teased at the end of season 2. This dinobot, instead of switching sides like in beast wars, stayed primarily with the predacons, up until his dying moments, and they handled his process in a very unique, and kinda fascinating way. They had Airrazor sort of talk to him about making his own choices, and I really appreciated that. I think my only complaint about his character is the fact that unless you’ve seen beast wars, you can’t fully appreciate this character as much. His VA is a bit different (not that it’s bad, I just miss the snarling), and his ending, while it did do something to me, wasn’t NEARLY as powerful as the beast wars version. At least they didn’t revive him in this one, I’ll give them props for that. 7/10. Not bad, but I prefer beast wars by a landslide (though DAMN they make him look good in this show).

Sneaky fem fatale gone LESBIAN on our asses. Seriously, girl comes off as almost SCARED of hetero relationships, and while I did ship Blackarachnia and Silverbolt back in the day, I REALLY appreciate seeing her not only calling Arcee cute, but SMOOCHING Airrazor. Tigatron’s gf now has a gf, and everyone is okay with this. We love it, she’s sneaky, she’s gay, she’s kinky, and we WISH we could look as she does. 10/10, LOVE watching her on screen, and I wished she could smooch on the lips like she deserves.

Across many continuties, the Old Friends thing that Megatron and Optimus have is just *chef's kiss* but I do love that TFA was like they don't know each other and Megatron doesn't even know Optimus's name for 97% of the seriesXD

favourite canon pairing

IDW Drift and Ratchet are up there for me with both of them finding peace in each other after the war. TFP/IDW Knockout and Breakdown and I'm glad that they got a happy ending in IDW continuity.

worst pairing ever

Transformers Animated Shockwave and Blurr. Shockwave kills Blurr. But Saren kills Nihlus you might say well they had a pre-existing relationship in canon and a death robot had scrambled Saren's brains where as Shockwave just smashes Blurr into a paperweight upon their first interaction.

guilty pleasure pairing

Truly guilty, I did read one really good Optimus/Starscream fic where they were both in character and it was so good and tragic and that high will never be achieved again for that pairing.

a pairing you want to see more

You can't just drop canon Black Arachnia/Airazor and think I won't remember that Airazor has two hands and could hold her other canon romance from a previous iteration, Tigatron's hand too

Arcee smooching ladies is always fantastic too and I'm glad that trend has continued in the comics

hero&hero dynamics

Beast Wars II could have been better if the focus was more on the Destrons instead of the Cybertrons. Not to be on the “good guys are lame” train, but the destrons’ antics and dynamics are far more interesting than anything that ever goes on in Team Good Guys. 

Team Good Guys simply lacks interesting character dynamics. Like it’s 6 characters, and the dynamics I’ve seen so far are: 

1. Lio Convoy is respected by everyone

2. Apache feels like a burden to Lio Convoy, but Convoy knows thats not true (one episode exploration)

3. Bighorn saw Diver as a coward, but they quickly got over that (one episode exploration)

Compare that to the Destrons:

1. Galvatron’s and Megastorm’s relatable sibling situation (I have older and younger siblings, trust me, it’s relatable)

2. Starscream and BB’s cute partnership

3. Dirge and Thrust constantly bullshit together

4. Starscream constantly trying to kill his teammates

5. Everyone else trying to get Starscream’s position

6. How Starscream acts loyal to Megastorm, but is really only loyal to Galvatron

Compared to that, the Cybertrons are just. Friends. But there is barely anything going on, they just feel like a few people in a group project most of the time.

And this aint the first show were I felt that, G1 felt a bit like that too. They had singular episodes about two autobots getting in some kind of conflict, but whatever that was, it stayed in that episode, and for the rest of the series all autobots were just ~ friends ~

I get it, good guys gotta be friends while bad guys are always in conflict with each other, but then people forget to give those friends an interesting dynamic or explore their friendship. 

And conflicted relationships are just more interesting compared to bland friendship, you know what I mean?

Same with TFP, gotta be honest. It says “found family” but I have no idea what kind of dynamic Arcee has with say Bulkhead or Bumblebee. Optimus Prime has barely any unique dynamic with anyone, because he talks and treats them all the same (Ratchet being the exception).

That goes double for G1 Optimus Prime - So many Autobots, and I only remember him having any meaningful interaction with Ironhide, Bumblebee, Omega Supreme and Silverbolt. And even those are like one episode drama.

He’s just the respected, beloved leader and that’s where it ends. 

Kudos to TFA, Beast Wars and RID15 in that regard!

TFA is the found family autobot show, Prime had different dynamics with his teammates and the teammates had different dynamics with each other. Prowl’s and Bumblebee’s conflicting personalities and interests, Prime trying to be a good friend for Prowl and Ratchet, Bulkhead and Bumblebee’s good friendship, it’s all good!

Beast Wars had just the best character writing in my opinion, having a no-patience Optimus helped with that. Dinobot and Rattrap had a weird, insult throwing bromance, the romance between Blackarachnia and Silverbolt, the brotherly dynamic between Tigatron and Cheetor, really enjoyed Depth Charge pulling a Sasuke towards anyone.

RID15 had everyone having a different dynamic with Leader Bumblebee, Sideswipe and Grimlock being buddies, Sideswipe’s and Armstrong’s constant bickering and my fave, whatever the fuck Grimlock and Drift had going.

Btw this doesn’t say anything about any characters personalities, of course they have personalities and I love Optimus Prime, despite what I said here.

But personalities work better when paired - but a lot of the good stuff comes from hero&villain interactions and villain&villain interactions. Some people just forget to give good dynamics to hero&hero relationships.
