In the field of radiology, generative models, notably DALL-E 2, have tremendous promise for image production and modification. Scientists have shown that DALL-E 2 has learned relevant x-ray picture representations and is able to produce new images from text descriptions, expand images beyond their initial borders, and delete elements. Despite limitations, the authors feel that the use of generative models in radiology research is conceivable so long as the models are further refined and adapted to the specific areas of interest.

Look at this! On the first try! So pretty!
Tumblr media
Guys, I've been killing it these past few days with my to-do list! If only I could sustain the energy and focus over the long-term 🤔🙄
Here's my yesterday's list:
Pick up condolence card for friend I actually found a card at home so I didn't need to go out to buy one! Woot!
More laundry (bedsheets)
Pick-up sandwich fixings
Cat to vet
Clean up leaves in backyard
Vacuum upstairs hallway and stairs
I actually ended up vacuuming more than just the hallway and stairs. Sometimes I have to trick myself into just doing one small, manageable task in order to just get started. If my to-do list yesterday said, "Vacuum hallway, bathroom and cat-fur and cat-litter infused carpet in son's bedroom, and stairs, and globs of dog fur on entire main floor" there's no way I would have mustered enough courage to sally forth.
Same with the condolence card. I didn't put down on my list that I had to write the card and find the address. Good grief! That's overwhelming to the point of debilitation! No, I simply had to pick up a card. But guess what? I did go the two steps further and wrote and addressed it. I even had a stamp at home! The only thing I'm mad about is that I had planned to drop it off at the post office on my way to the deli because it's right next to it, would have been a perfect example of uber efficiency and organization, but I forgot the damn thing at home. 🤦🏻‍♀️
Well, today I shall mail it, as I have to go get milk and bread today anyway. Here's my to-do for today.
Mail condolence card
Yet more laundry (towels) - in the wash as we speak! In the dryer now!
Pick-up bread & milk, also pasta Done!
Clean up next section of leaves in backyard
Vacuum front entrance carpet
I'm away this afternoon for a job but I can pick up the groceries before I have to go, and I can do the yardwork when I get back. I can mail the card on my way to the job at a different post office in that direction (unless I forget it at home again!)
Already took chicken out of the freezer last night for tonight's supper, and washed some collard greens while I was writing this post. I'll make the pasta as the side, maybe in a white sauce.
Good luck with your to-dos today!

My friend recently got his master’s degree in computer science and he has access to the full version of DALL-E (not just DALL-E mini which was released for the public to play with not too long ago). To show a comparison of how DALL-E compares to DALL-E mini, consider the above image, which was an output from DALL-E to the prompt of “a hamster in a cup.” Almost photorealistic! Now take a gander at the BEST of the outputs given by DALL-E mini to the same prompt:
Tumblr media
Some of them aren’t TOO bad, but they all have problems (these become more apparent on magnification), and outputs like the unidentifiable pointy-headed creature-or-maybe-object in the upper left corner occur with close to 50% frequency. And things like the flabbergastingly inexplicable tubular hamster in the middle of the top row of the following simply don’t get produced by the full version of DALL-E. Which begs the question - which one is actually more “interesting”? (The answer is both are, depending on what, exactly, you are interested *in* of course.)

Imaginary Shamans
Tumblr media
The shaman in the accompanying image does not exist in real life. He was brought to life by architect and travel photographer Dimitar Karanikolov using artificial intelligence (AI) and Midjourney, a chat-powered text-to-image generator for his portrait series "Imaginary Shamans." All the portraits he created are generated based only on descriptions and words.
In a recent interview for Designbloom, a digital magazine for architecture and design, Karanikolov says, "In order to have a more controlled result, I was very specific and described a lot of the details I wished to see in the final image -- the age, the clothes, the ethnicity, to name a few. I have also specified the camera settings -- or the virtual lens I wish to use -- the light scenario, and the framing. The more words I put in, the better."
From the creases that line the shamans' faces to the traditional tattoos that ink their skin, the details in every image appear crystal clear, making viewers question whether they were generated by artificial intelligence or snapped by a professional photographer. Karanikolov thinks that artificial intelligence in photography is both fascinating and scary at the same time.
"I understand why a lot of people feared this technology," he says. "Still, I think it is an amazing tool that gives lots of people the opportunity to express themselves and visualize their ideas. Surely, it will have a major impact on the photographic industry in the future, and we'll soon have to specify when we post a photo whether it's real or AI, as there will be no difference in the quality."
Karanikolov might be an architect, but travel photography has been a passion of his for the last eight years. "I did numerous trips in order to explore and photograph authentic communities around the world such as Mongolia, Ethiopia, Bolivia, and Indonesia. I have always been fascinated by indigenous people and their culture, their rituals and aesthetics. These are our ancestors, our roots," he says.
"When AI softwares became wildly popular and open to access several months ago, I naturally tried generating spaces and architectural details, but creating human faces and characters brings much more emotion and connection, along with much more powerful visions. So, I have decided to do some AI travel photography," he tells Designbloom. Bringing his photographic zest with him on every trip has culminated in the creation of "Imaginary Shamans," underlining both the beauty artificial intelligence can generate and the underlying concern it might bring.
