Request Policy
So now that I have… some idea of what I want my requests policy to be, I’ve decided to actually properly outline it here. I do take requests … until I don’t, and that status will be prominently displayed on my sidebar. If I’ve got an ask game running, I’m definitely taking requests (and will post when I’ve gotten too many to complete!) but I want to outline the things I will and will not do. This is long, so check under the Read More for information.
As an additional note, I'm slow when it comes to responding to requests and oneshots. My brain tends to hyperfixate on certain things and it may be a Bit™ before it gets around to actually letting me write what I need. Please please be patient with me, I'm very small and very squishy.
Tumblr media
(1) Who do I write for?
First and foremost, I DO NOT write RPF (Real Person Fiction). I know people that do and I adore them, but I am not capable of doing it myself.
Secondly, my list of characters I’m opento write for encompasses more than characters I have written for. I may attempt to do an organized masterlist — especially if Iam writing in CEvans-verse or more Bruhl characters, for example.
At present, I write/plan to write for:
Steve Rogers (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
Andy Barber (Defending Jacob)
Ransom Drysdale (Knives Out)
Bucky Barnes (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
Helmut Zemo (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
Thor Odinson (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
Sam Wilson (Marvel Cinematic Universe)
Robb Stark (Game of Thrones — AUs ONLY at the moment)
Jon Snow (Game of Thrones — AUs ONLY at the moment)
Jaime Lannister (Game of Thrones — AUs ONLY at the moment)
Erik Lensherr/Magneto (Marvel Cinematic Universe/X-Men)
Billy Russo (Marvel Cinematic Universe/Punisher)
Frank Castle (Marvel Cinematic Universe/Punisher)
I am perfectly open to writing threesomes in any combination you do request, and pretty much any AU you want. For anyone marked AU only, please be sure to let me know which AU you’re requesting because there’s very manyand I will die.
If you want someone not on this list, roll the dice! I try not to write for things I haven’t seenyet but I have a watchlist a mile long and a willingness to do nothing but crochet and “research.”
Tumblr media
(2) What WON’T I write?
I won’t touch
Underage ANYTHING (Writing about a couple having children is fine, writing a child!Reader scares me)
Watersports/Scat
Raceplay
Extreme Violence (excluding action sequences and even then, I’m just bad at it, y’all)
Bestiality (monsterfucking doesn’t count, gimme)
Real Person Fiction (just… reiterating that)
DDLG Kink (I’m just… not comfortable with writing it. There are better writers who are actuallyLittles or otherwise out there and I would never ever do them the disservice by attempting my own hand)
You, if you’re rude (don’t be a dick)
Some additional notes: I’m Desi. I don’t know how to be anything other than Desi, and occasionally that means my readers might accidentally get coded as Desi because my normal meter is firmly oriented towards the homeland and sometimes I forget there are things I do that other cultures don’t. I will try my best not to code requests a certain way unless you request it specifically (plus size!Reader, specific profession!Reader, specific faith!Reader, etc.).
I also reserve the right to gently decline to do any requests if I am not comfortable completing it. Sometimes I don’t know I have a limit until I have it and then I get to Deal with that.

In Dreams Begin (Jessa wedding story)
Obviously written by Cassandra Clare. I own no rights to this. This was included in first editions of The Lost Book of the White by her and Wesley Chu. It tells the story of Jem Carstairs and Tessa Gray’s wedding and explains why no one remembers it.
Unfortunately it does include some spoilers from LBW so if you have not read it yet, I don’t recommend reading it. Otherwise, enjoy :)
~~~
Magnus Bane was scheming.
         To an untrained observer, the High Warlock of Brooklyn wouldn’t look like he was doing much of anything at all. For one thing, he was wearing purple silk pajamas. For another thing, he was in bed, leaning back against a pile of pillows with a spell book open in his lap.
         Beside him, Alec Lightwood was stretched out on his side, deeply asleep. Earlier that day, Alec had taken their son, Max, to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. This had been at Magnus’s request—he wanted Max to have ample opportunity to tire himself out before bedtime. It worked almost too well. Max had made fast friends with a werewolf toddler named Eliza, and the two of them tore around the gardens blissfully for about three hours straight, Max crawling while Eliza ran, albeit unsteadily. Eliza’s mother had been quite surprised the first time Max levitated. Luckily, he was glamoured so only she and Alec noticed.
         Though not possessed of much vocabulary, Eliza clearly wanted Max to levitate her as well. Fortunately, Max did not yet have that sort of skill. Alec and Max returned home happy, covered in mud, and—best of all—exhausted. Magnus really wanted them all to sleep through the night.
         Magnus shifted position and peered across the room at the mantel clock atop the dresser, a hideous thing covered in putti that Ragnor had given him years ago. The room was lit only by a candle that burned with a blue flame on the table beside him, but he could make out the numbers. It was one forty-five a.m. Surely that was late enough. Surely even the Shadowhunters and Downworlders of the West Coast would be turning in. He’d given Catarina and Jem and Tessa a heads-up, after all, and as for the Blackthorns and Emma Carstairs, they were kids! And not even babies, with their bizarre and erratic relationship to sleep. Surely the would be asleep by now, worn out from running around on the beach or whatever it was that the residents of the Los Angeles Institute did all day. Yes, it was time.
         Snuggling a little farther under the blanket, Magnus looked fondly over at Alec’s sleeping form, his black hair like spilled ink across the ivory pillowcase. He closed his book and set it on the bedside table. He mentally reached within, feeling about for a particular pocket of magic folded away deep inside, a self-contained bubble. I had been two weeks since he’d been freed from the influence of the Svefnthorn, and while the markings on his skin had faded, his teeth had shrunk back to their normal size, and the overcharged magic of the artifact had left his system, this one reserve of magical energy had lingered.
         At first, Magnus had considered hanging on to it as a sort of insurance policy. A little extra magic went a long way, especially when the magic was this potent, and Magnus was quite certain that he and Alec and their friends would have plenty more dangers to face in the years to come. That was their job, after all. But clinging to the magic out of fear of imagined dangers didn’t feel good. It felt like letting demons have a small victory over him, playing right into their scaly, demonic hands. No, instead he had resolved to use the power in a decidedly un-demon-sanctioned manner—to create joy.
         Magnus shut his eyes. Oneiromancy, the study and practice of dream magic, had never been one of his specialties. But with the added kernel of power from the Sveftnthorn, he felt quite confident that he could pull of this one feat, even as complex as it was. The trickiest part, it seemed to him, was holding himself in that drowsy state between waking and sleeping, while maintaining enough awareness to cast the spell. He lay back against the pillows, letting his eyelids flutter shut for just a moment….
~~~
When Magnus opened his eyes again, he was standing in the middle of Blackfriars Bridge, the panorama of London spread out around him in all directions.
He took a deep breath of river-tasting air. The sky was a dark violet, the sun only just beginning to rise. There was no traffic, which was a distinct advantage to throwing a party on a dream bridge rather than on the real thing. There was a warm breeze in the air, and the Thames danced beneath it, silvery in the dawn light. Had he ever noticed wind in a dream before? Magnus wasn’t sure. He admired the view from the bridge—it seemed just about right, though he hadn’t been here for a couple decades. Perhaps some ugly new construction had taken place since then, but who would fault him for omitting that?
         “Magnus!”
He turned and saw two figures hurrying toward him. It was Tessa and Jem, both in what Magnus assumed was their pajamas. Tessa’s were gray with white rabbits on them. Jem’s were dark-green-and-navy-blue plaid. They were barefoot, but that wouldn’t matter on a dream bridge. He started to smile as they got closer and he could see that they were both giddy and laughing, a hint of disbelief on their faces.
Tessa threw her arms around him, knocking him off-balance. He marveled at how solid and real she felt.
“It’s working!” she said in wonder.
“A magical discipline unexplored is always worth exploring,” Magnus said, stepping back. “I may be late to the game with oreiromancy, but I plan to make up for my tardiness all at once, right now. Is that what your planning to wear to your wedding?”
“It’s not traditional, but neither was the yellow cotton shirt dress I wore for the courthouse wedding. And I do love bunnies,” said Tessa. “I’m all right with it if Jem is.”
“I would marry you if you were wearing a barrel,” said Jem.
“But why would I be wearing a barrel?” said Tessa.
They were both grinning at each other stupidly. Magnus decided something needed to be done; he wasn’t sure how long his magic would hold out.
“I won’t have it!” he said. “If I’m to throw you a dream wedding, you must be properly dressed for the occasion. It’s in my contract. I do hope you read the fine print.”
He snapped his fingers, and Jem’s pajamas were replaced by an exquisitely cut black suit. Magnus aimed for something that suggested the style of the Shadowhunter gear Jem had worn long ago, in the first years he knew Tessa. Wedding runes were intricately embroidered on the lapels in gold thread. As Jem marveled at the excellent fit, Magnus turned his attention to Tessa.
“I know,” he said, “a wedding dress is a highly personal choice. But as our other guests will be arriving momentarily, and time is of the essence, I’m going to take a stab at it.”
“You have my express permission,” Tessa said.
Magnus snapped his fingers again, and the Tessa was wearing a beautiful sleeveless gown of pale silver, with a full skirt that reminded Magnus of the first time he’d met her, at a vampire ball. A couple more flicks of his fingers, and her hair rearranged itself beautifully into an updo, with a few tendrils loose around her face. One more gesture, and Tessa’s familiar jade pendant appeared around her neck—as did the pearl bracelet she always wore, a gift from Will on their thirtieth anniversary.
Tessa looked startled, reaching up to touch her hair, then brushing her hands over the gown. “How do I look?”
Jem looked very young again as he gazed at her, his dark eyes full of emotion. “Ni hen piao liang,” he whispered. You are very beautiful.
Magnus turned away to give them a moment—and felt familiar arms close around him.
Alec kissed Magnus on his forehead—being slightly shorter than Magnus, he had to pull Magnus down a bit to do it, which Magnus didn’t mind at all—and muttered, “You’re a sentimental bastard, aren’t you?” in his ear.
But he was grinning all over his face as he turned to greet Tessa and Jem, congratulating them. They both looked delighted to see him.
“So let me get this straight,” Alec said. “You, me, Tessa, and Jem will all remember this with perfect recall. For the other guests, they’ll remember it at first, but then it will fade away, the way dreams do?”
“That is correct. They won’t recall it the way we will, but their souls will be present, and glad for it. Well, mostly glad for it,” Magnus said.
“What do you mean, ‘mostly’?” Jem said nervously.
“I mean that I’m not sure how Church will feel about the whole thing.”
“Church!” Alec and Jem exclaimed at the same time, and turned to see the grumpy Persian cat sauntering toward them down the center of the bridge.
Tessa laughed. “Well, he does sleep twenty hours a day. I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised.”
“I took the liberty of adding him to the guest list you gave me,” Magnus said. “I’m trying to get on his good side.”
“Why?” Alec asked, incredulous. “He’s a cat.”
“So he won’t hate me forever when I do this.” Magnus snapped his fingers, and a silver bow in the same fabric as Tessa’s dress appeared around Church’s neck. Church’s eyes widened for a moment. Then he sat down, and after a moment, became very focused on cleaning his front paw.
“Now,” Magnus said, “I simply must get this bridge decorated.”
“It’s decorated perfectly,” said a voice from behind him. Turning, he saw Clary, who was holding Max. Behind her was Jace, followed by Isabelle and Simon, who were leaning together, whispering conspiratorially. Jocelyn and Luke were there, looking slightly unkempt, and Magnus remembered that they were in the process of remodeling a barn at Luke’s farm so Jocelyn could expand her painting studio. Ragnor and Catarina had also appeared, as well as a whole gaggle of kids—the Blackthorn clan. Julian and Helen, Tiberius and Livia, Drusilla and Octavian. Emma Carstairs was with them, though she broke away from the group immediately, running to hug Clary. They were the same height now, Magnus noticed with amusement. Max had escaped from Clary and was riding on Alec’s shoulders now, babbling a story to Helen Blackthorn and her wife, Aline. They looked very amused, though it was unlikely they understood even a quarter of what he said.
Maryse and Kadir were there too, already deep in conversation with Jocelyn and Luke. Kadir hadn’t been on the guest list Jem and Tessa had given Magnus, because they didn’t really know him, but Magnus had added him as Maryse’s plus-one. It never hurt to butter up your boyfriend’s mother, especially when she was willing to babysit for days at a time.
A couple Silent Brothers had appeared—Enoch? Shadrach? Magnus was slightly embarrassed to admit that they all looked alike to him, now that Jem was no longer counted among their number as Brother Zachariah. Magnus hadn’t known if the Gregori would be able to attend, since they didn’t normally sleep. One of them—Enoch?—inclined his hooded head slightly at Magnus, acknowledging this mad thing he was doing as worthwhile. At least that was how Magnus chose to interpret the gesture.
Octavian was climbing Jace like a jungle gym. Clary was talking with Julian and Emma, while Tiberius stood near his older brother, looking around at London with fierce curiosity in his gray eyes. Livia and Drusilla were perched on the railing of the bridge, Livia chatting animatedly with Simon and Isabelle, Drusilla looking around shyly. Catarina went to lean beside her, asking her a question. Magnus looked at the motley assortment of clothing on the assembled group. Mostly casual, though there were more pajamas as well. Magnus made two sweeping gestures, and all at once everyone was looking very sharp in formal attire. Even better, they barely seemed to notice the change. Magnus was impressed. Oneiromancy—who knew!
A hand gripped his arm. It was Tessa, who looked close to tears. “Magnus. I can’t believe you’re doing this for us. I…” She trailed off, at a loss for words.
Magnus regarded her fondle. “Tessa, most people’s idea of a dream wedding is not a literal dream wedding. But since yours is, I am happy to oblige. Shall we get this show on the road?”
Jem and Tessa took their places on either side of Magnus, and the guests gathered around. The sun had climbed well above the horizon, casting rays of warm light between the long shadows of the wedding guests.
“Dear friends,” Magnus said to Jem and Tessa, “we are honored to share this moment with you, and I am doubly honored to be given the chance to speak. Several hundred years ago I got very drunk and woke up as ordained minister. Today I have decided that doing so was a wise choice after all.”
Jocelyn snorted, then looked embarrassed. Luke grinned at her.
“Joking aside, it is impossible to stand here with you all and not feel that there is some greater plan at work, some greater force that has brought these two souls across more than a century to be joined as one.”
Clary’s eyes were glistening. Jace reached into his pocket and offered her what looked like a handkerchief but was more likely a soft cloth for polishing blades. She gave a wry smile of recognition, and sniffled into it.
“I debated which customs to follow in officiating this wedding,” Magnus went on. “Whether to conduct a Shadowhunter ceremony, or a warlock ceremony, or even a mundane ceremony, for many worlds have been united in the two of you. But none of these traditions seemed quite appropriate on their own. So I’ve attempted to tailor a ceremony that will honor your unique paths.”
Magnus nodded to Jem, who reached into his pocket and produced a gold ring. Jem had requested a single word etched around the outside of it: Mizpah.
“It has been said,” said Magnus, “that when two people are at one in their inmost hearts, they shatter even the strength of iron or bronze. Theresa Gray, are you at one with James Carstairs in your inmost heart?”
Tessa’s eyes were wide, her face serious as she gazed at Jem. “I am,” she said, offering her hand to him. He slid the ring onto her finger.
The Magnus nodded at Tessa, who produced another ring, this one from thin air. Magnus had to suppress the grin that threatened to break his calm officiant expression. It delighted him that Tessa was engaging in a small amount of oneiromancy herself, and Jem looked as pleased by it as Magnus felt. This ring was the exact match of the first, and he knew what it said as well: May the Angel watch between me and thee when we are absent from one another.
“James Carstairs—Ke Jian Ming—are you at one with Theresa Gray in your inmost heart?”
“I am,” Jem said, delight visible in his dark eyes. Tessa put the ring on him, and they stood for a moment, holding hands and smiling at each other like they couldn’t quite believe this was happening.
“For I am persuaded,” said Magnus, and Jem and Tessa both looked up at him, recognizing a piece of the old Shadowhunter wedding ceremony, though he had altered the wording, “that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor demons, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate these two.” He stretched out his arms. “Therefore I am overjoyed to declare this marriage consecrated, here in the presence of your friends and family. Tessa Gray and Jem Carstairs, you are married, and the world is better for it. You may kiss each other, not that you really need my permission.”
The assembled crowd cheered as Jem and Tessa kissed, a kiss that had been long delayed. The kiss continued, and Magnus slowly backed away, joining the cheering audience. “Let’s give them a moment,” he said, and happy chatter swelled around him.
Magnus noted that Alec was looking very foxy in his Armani suit, laughing with Maryse. Ragnor and Catarina were cackling over something, glad to be reunited now that Ragnor didn’t have to pretend to be dead—or at least, didn’t have to pretend with them. Clary had her arm draped over Emma’s shoulders, and Jace was arguing with Simon about how to properly tie a necktie. Tiberius and Drusilla were watching this argument as though it were a tennis match. Julian had lifted Octavian up so he could look down at the river flowing by beneath. Isabelle was joking with Livia, who was giving Max a piggyback ride. It was a miraculously good wedding.
Here they were, his friends. They’d literally gone into Hell twice with him now. He found himself reflecting on how much had changed. At first his life had felt like Magnus against the world. Then for years and years it had been Magnus, Catarina, and Ragnor against the world. Now his community was a much larger group, one that had spread wide enough that instead of Magnus and his friends against the world, it felt like Magnus and his friends, a part of the world. Probably the best part of the world.
         It was a good feeling.
“Look!” a girl’s voice cried. It was Drusilla, pointing up into the sky, eyes wide with wonder. There was a collective gasp as the crowd saw what she had spotted. Two figures flew overhead, riding a translucent white stallion with two gold hooves and two silver. One of them was a blond boy in ragged clothes, who looked down at the Blackthorns and waved. The figure in front of him was harder to make out—a gentry faerie in clothes just as ragged, only he was as translucent as the horse. The blond boy must be Mark Blackthorn, Magnus marveled. He’d “invited” the whole family, not knowing whether those who rode with the Wild Hunt could be summoned by dream magic. He had his answer, but it came with another mystery. Who was this companion, so close to Mark that they would appear together in a dream?
The riders made a circle overhead, while the Blackthorns shouted and waved, and Mark waved back, smiling an odd smile down at them. Then they faded away into the morning air.
Magnus saw with relief that Jace, Clary, Simon, Isabelle, and Alec had all move in around the Blackthorn kids, giving them an opportunity to talk about what they had just seen—their stolen brother, visiting so briefly.
He glanced over and saw Tessa and Jem still standing by the railing. There was a shimmer beside them, at the edge of the bridge, and the hair on the back of Magnus’s neck rose.
He knew Will Herondale had never haunted the moral world, because he had lived and died happily and had no unfinished business among the living. While Magnus didn’t subscribe to any specific set of beliefs about reincarnation or the afterlife, he had always had a strong sense that Will was waiting on the other bank of a dark river—be it Lethe, or some other border between the living and the dead. He was there among the green grass, the sky above as dark a blue as his eyes, waiting patiently for Jem and Tessa to join him, that he might lead them by the hand to whatever wonders lay beyond the veil.
The philosophers of ancient Greece had believed dreams and sleep to be the twin of death: Morpheus and Hades, standing side by side. And here, in that space, Magnus would not have been surprised if Will stretched out his hand to those he had loved best in life—to Jem and Tessa.
He was, after all, a Herondale, and very stubborn.
Alec sidled up to Magnus, leaving the Blackthorns in the capable hands of his siblings and their partners. The kids seemed to have taken Mark’s appearance as a sort of wedding favor created especially for them.
Alec twinned an arm around Magnus’s waist and pulled him close, kissing him on the temple. “It was very kind of you to use the last of your Svefnthorn magic on this,” he said.
Magnus leaned into Alec. “Well, it wasn’t enough magic to send us to the moon, or get us into the front row at the Alexander McQueen runway. So I figured, next best thing.”
Alec smiled at him pointedly. “Actually, I happen to know that you did it because you are an incredibly kind person, and that is one of the many things I love about you.”
“Oh dear,” Magnus said, turning to face him. “You know all my secrets.”
Then they were kissing, and kissing in a magical dream turned out to be just as perfect as kissing in the waking world.

Tmi gang with Mina
{ as requested by @daisyherxndale  💜}
As soon as Mina was born, they had all heard about her and were sent so many pictures by a very excited Magnus
Magnus is a proud godfather of Mina, as is Alec
Isabelle and Simon made a trip through to Devon to see Tessa and Jem
As soon as they met her, they were absolutely smitten, Isabelle was amazed that the hot ex-silent brother had made such a cute baby
Simon was just excited to share further knowledge of comics with Mina as she grows up, he already teaches Kit and has given him some DC comics and movies
As soon as Tessa had recovered, her and Jem took a trip to the New York institution to see Jace and Clary
Clary and Jace absolutely love Mina, having Mina around has again sparked the children talk
Jace is banned from letting Mina into the weapons room
Clary, just like Julian, loves to let Mina into her art room and just lets her do arts and crafts
Magnus and Alec have an open door policy so anyone is allowed to come, Tessa abuses this privilege and comes to see Magnus and Alec, making sure she brings Mina
Magnus loves to buy Mina cute outfits and dresses her up
Alec loves to babysit Mina, he misses having a baby around a lot since Max grew up
Jem and Tessa also take trips to Luke’s farm, Jocelyn adores little Mina. She also misses having a baby around since Clary grew up
As Mina grew, she would take often trips through to New York to see Uncle Magnus and Uncle Alec
She also takes often trips to New York institution to see the others
Jace also breaks Tessa’s only rule and allows her into the weapon room, he is caught in the act by Clary or Isabelle and severely punished
Because of Julian and Clary’s influence, Mina has a love for drawing. Clary is always more than willing to give Mina art lessons every time she comes over
Isabelle also trains Mina when shes over and helps her pick a future weapon, that will suit her fighting style
Simon and Mina always have movie days, he will also take her to the cinema's to the the next DC film, when she isn’t stolen by anyone else or training
Jace and Mina love picking on one another and do an insult battle, neither win as they both complain to someone
Ah yes, Lily also gets to meet Mina and she is shook when she finds out that Mina is Brother Snackriah’s kid
to be fair, she could also see it in the resemblance
when Mina is old enough, she finds out about the nicknames Lily gave her father and would tell her dad, causing Jem to get rather embarrassed
Lily is quite good when it comes to children so taking care of Mina is like second nature
Lily and Mina are quite the duo as Mina grows up

Holiday Shopping with Reacting to Something
Tumblr media
stock photo shamelessly lifted from
We know we haven’t generated original content in a very long time, but we wanted to get into the holidays in a way that was more or less on brand. So in the spirit of a Netflix recommendation algorithm, here are some suggestions for what to buy friends and family who liked some of the movies we saw in 2018 (including a couple that premiered in late 2017).
It’s probably obvious, but just to be super clear, the format below is --
If they liked this: They may also like this
Miri’s Gift Guide
The Shape of Water: I shouldn’t say a day pass to an aquarium because it’s a terrible, easy joke BUT I AM WHO I AM.
If you’re not a garbage person, maybe consider the rest of Del Toro’s creature filmography, anything related to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or a collection of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen. Dark and gritty originals, not the tidied up versions.
Tumblr media
Call Me By Your Name: NO, I WILL NOT SAY ANYTHING TO DO WITH PEACHES BECAUSE EVEN I HAVE LIMITS. APPARENTLY. The book is a lovely, lyrical, tragic read (or listen, if you go with the Armie Hammer audiobook as I did), and I would also recommend giving a gift of solitary artistic pleasure in whatever way speaks to your intended recipient—a CD, a ticket to an art exhibit, a coffee table book of a painter you think they will love. Something beautiful that requires a little bit of space to enjoy privately.
Black Panther: The new Shuri comic! (I am a hypocrite because I haven’t read it yet but it looks so awesome!) Also, there are some choice funko pops for Black Panther, which are a nice, reasonable price and make a great desk or bookshelf addition.
Tumblr media
Annihilation: A DVD of Arrival and a book on fascinating genetic mutations. (The photo above is from the first linked book.) Also, tell them about the Twitter account Tessa as Goats, which is a true gift to us all.
Game Night: A murder mystery game! Or whatever game you think most appeals to them, but I personally think the immersive nature of a murder mystery is a true delight. Also, something Olivia the Dog themed because she’s awesome.
A Wrinkle in Time: For the actual child: one of the books published under the Rick Riordan Presents banner.
For the child in all of us: a soothing and/or empowering adult coloring book and some nice colored pencils.
Tumblr media
Thoroughbreds: Really cool sunglasses.
Love, Simon: Tickets to the upcoming Clea DuVall helmed queer rom com starring Kristen Stewart and YES this is a request for myself, obviously.
Blockers: Make them a dance music playlist on Spotify!! (Or burn an actual CD for peak nostalgia/those who enjoy physical media.) And if you have some time together, have your own dance party with as many or as few people as you want.
Tumblr media

Ocean’s 8: LEVERAGE! BUY THEM A SEASON OF LEVERAGE!!! Give them the gift of even more cons and fun!
Incredibles 2: If they are parents: a night out without the children (this could mean a gift certificate or an offer to babysit). If not, try something heroic like these ornaments, or something that helps them learn to be their own hero, like a self defense or kickboxing class.
Tag: LASER TAG! It’s so fun, even if you’re bad at it! Give a gift card or book a session together and enjoy chasing each other around like giant, fun-loving idiots.

Set It Up: A massage. Anyone who related to this movie too much is likely very much in need of stress relief. Also, a large quantity of popcorn to be eaten in whatever manner they wish with no shame at all.
Hotel Artemis: A Swiss army knife and a couple of airplane bottles of booze.
Sorry to Bother You: An Oaktown t-shirt (I have been told by someone from the area that this is A Thing but I don’t actually know and I’m sorry for that) and a copy of Kafka’s Metamorphosis.
Crazy Rich Asians: Ideally, a whirlwind food tour of Singapore. If that’s not feasible, a Hulu subscription so they can enjoy Constance Wu’s full comic potential in Fresh Off the Boat. And a really nice candle, because it’s a small decadence that can really go a long way.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before: The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory (if they like a steamy read), tall socks (if they like to be cozy and cute), and custom stationary (if they like to live dangerously).
Tumblr media
A Simple Favor: A cocktail shaker, fancy bitters, a really good mystery novel.
Widows: Tickets to go see Widows again because it’s amazing and is probably even more amazing a second time.

Wildlife or Widows: The H-Spot: The Feminist Pursuit of Happiness
As I say in my Amazon review, this is the best applied ethics text I was never assigned. In fairness to my professors, attorney-turned-journalist Jill Filipovic hadn’t written it yet when I was a philosophy student. Filipovic is also not a philosopher. But she is a brilliant writer and a rigorous thinker, and The H-Spot is fundamentally and explicitly an Aristotelian ethical project. That is to say, it takes the starting position that political organization should be aimed at the goal of human flourishing (as opposed to, say, economic growth). From there Filipovic builds a case, or maybe it's better to say several cases, for specific ways in which American policy fails women and disproportionately women of color in this aim, and concrete ways in which it could address this failure. She does so largely through first-hand accounts of several women across America, in a wide range of socioeconomic circumstances. Although the institutions and less formal systems in play are complicated, the questions at the heart of all this are simple: What do women want? What do women need?
Filipovic asks these questions without pre-judgment, and without assuming that any answers are too unrealistic to consider. Not that anyone she talks to asks for anything "unrealistic." Partly this is because they often speak from too much experience for the unrealistic to occur to them as something they deserve to ask for, but also, the idea that woman-friendly policy is unrealistic is a Bad Take to begin with. Filipovic doesn't need to be pie-in-the-sky utopian to show how things could be much better for women (and by extension, it should but still doesn't go without saying, for everyone).
I left academic philosophy over five years ago, but I really think each chapter (built around topics like friendship, sex, parenting, and food) is brimming with potential paper topics for grad and undergrad students of ethics and/or political philosophy. Whether you’re philosophically inclined or not, if you think “women should be happy” and “the point of civilization is to make happiness easier for everyone” are uncontroversial claims, The H-Spot is the book for you -- and for your friends who loved the several underestimated women of Widows, or Carey Mulligan’s captivating portrayal in Wildlife of a woman doing the best she could within the restrictions of her era.

Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet
Though it helps to have some familiarity with the Avengers storylines that led up to Ta-Nehisi motherfucking Coates’s first year on the Black Panther comic -- as well as with the excellent opening arc of Matt Fraction’s Invincible Iron Man -- here’s all that even a new comics reader really needs to know before jumping into Nation: King T’Challa, the Black Panther, was recently unable to prevent several consecutive disasters in Wakanda. Both as a cause and as a result of these disasters, T’Challa worked with the so-called “Illuminati” (Tony Stark, Reed Richards, Stephen Strange, and other intellectual and strategic heavyweights) to prevent the end of the multiverse itself. That crisis averted, T’Challa has returned to Wakanda to resume his royal duties.
Coates takes as a starting premise that Wakanda, the most advanced nation on earth, would only still have a hereditary monarchy if the monarch was uniquely suited as a protector of the people. In the wake of the Panther’s failures in this regard, Nation opens with a rebellion against T’Challa’s rule on two fronts: domestic terrorists with an unknown agenda on one hand, and on the other, former officers of the Dora Milaje (the all-female royal bodyguard corps beloved by fans of the movie) rallying Wakandan women who have suffered great injustices unaddressed by the crown. The leaders of the latter, lovers Ayo and Aneka, are nominally antagonists to T’Challa, but to the reader they’re parallel protagonists. You root for both T’Challa and the Dora Milaje, even though their agendas are in tension, not unlike the way one might have rooted for both Tyrion Lannister and Robb Stark in early Game of Thrones. (Shuri’s around too, though she’s quite unlike her movie counterpart.)
When he’s not fighting or investigating, T’Challa does a lot of soul-searching and debating about his responsibilities as king, the ways it conflicts with his career as a globetrotting superhero, and whether and how the government of Wakanda must evolve. Though Wakanda is too small to be considered a superpower, the domestic terror angle, an interrogation of historical injustice, and the struggle between moral idealism and political reality make Wakanda a proxy in some important ways for modern America. (You may have noticed that Ryan Coogler did this too.) Coates’s meditation on leadership and political power made A Nation Under Our Feet not only a great superhero comic but -- this is not an exaggeration or a joke -- my favorite political writing of 2016.
Nation is illustrated mostly by Brian Stelfreeze and Chris Sprouse, with colors by Laura Martin; some of Stelfreeze’s designs clearly influenced the movie.
Tumblr media
Thoroughbreds: Sweetpea
When a clever, mean-spirited would-be journalist with airhead friends learns that her boyfriend is cheating on her, old traumas bubble to the surface and she becomes a serial killer who targets sex offenders. Darkly, often cruelly hilarious, Sweetpea is what you’d get if American Psycho was set in southwestern England and for some reason starred Amy from Gone Girl. Protagonist Rhiannon is a self-described inhabitant of an Island of Unfinished Sentences, de facto Chief Listener of her “friend” circle, and a maker of lists. Lists of the things her friends talk about (babies, boyfriends, IKEA), signs she’d like to put up at work (please close doors quietly, please do not wear Crocs to work), and oh, the people she wants to kill. Like her boyfriend, at the moment. Or ISIS, when news coverage of a terror attack pre-empts her beloved MasterChef.
Author C.J. Skuse smartly chooses not to have Rhiannon wallow in her traumatic past as many superheroes do. We get glimpses for context, but Rhiannon is committed to moving forward, to escaping her demons rather than being defined by them. It matters that she wants to get better, even if she also hates that she’s bought into society’s definition of “better.” (#relatable)
It’s worth noting that Sweetpea leans seemingly uncritically into a lot of dated gender tropes, in Rhiannon’s assessments of the women around her. (Body positive she is not.) Then again, she’s an unreliable narrator -- one of the best demonstrations of this is a scene in which she’s convinced of her ability to fool the world into believing she’s normal, then overhears her dipshit co-workers talk about how unsettling she is -- so arguably we’re supposed to laugh at how terrible she is without necessarily agreeing with her. This is, I think, a perfectly legitimate approach to a protagonist, even if some find it unfashionable.
The book is not quite as thematically rich as it first appears, at least on the topic of sexual violence; it indulges a “stranger danger” picture of rape that doesn’t feel entirely contemporary. (For a more nuanced treatment of rape culture, see the sadly short-lived but wildly entertaining vigilante dramedy Sweet/Vicious.) But as a portrait of a vibrant, layered, genuinely Nasty-and-you-kinda-love-her-for-it woman -- given Oscar-caliber-portrayal-worthy life by Skuse’s wickedly sharp voice -- Sweetpea is too fun to pass up.
Tumblr media
Upgrade or Infinity War: The Wild Storm
Castlevania showrunner Warren Ellis helped redefine superhero comics with 1999’s The Authority, which at DC’s request he's given a Gritty Reboot (along with the WildCATS, whom some of us remember from this extremely 90s cartoon) in The Wild Storm. Ellis has always been interested in The Future, both its potential wondrousness and its probable horror. Fans of Upgrade’s refreshingly unsanitized (and unsanitary) take on human enhancement through body modification will find much to like in Ellis’s spin on the trope of second-skin powered armor. (He semi-famously wrote Extremis, one of the comic arcs that inspired Iron Man 3.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
art by Jon Davis Hunt, from The Wild Storm #1
Angela Spica, a reimagining of Ellis’s old Authority character The Engineer, is a cybernetics expert who stumbles onto a sort of shadow government conspiracy related to her employer, and goes on the run with the armor she’s designed for them. (When not deployed, the armor is stored inside her body.) Angela is quickly targeted by multiple covert organizations, one of which rescues (?) her and brings her in on a secret history of technological arms races and contact with extraterrestrials. The Wild Storm is full of big action and bigger ideas, and for smart, generally curious superhero movie fans who find the decades-long continuities of the DC and Marvel universes intimidating, it’s a great entry -- with a blessedly planned ending -- into sci-fi-comics.
Happy holidays, and have fun gift shopping!

Class Action Lawsuits On The Rise Due To Pandemic
By Brooke Wilke, Michigan State University Class of 2022
May 5, 2021
Tumblr media
In the past year, there has been a spike in class action lawsuits due to COVID 19. A class action lawsuit allows a group with similar interest/injury to sue or be sued. For example, in Mardig Taslakian V. Target, et al. (2020), Taslakian, individually and on behalf of others, sued Target corporation and Target Brands, Inc., over an alleged misrepresentation of hand sanitizer marketing. Target’s brand of hand sanitizer, “up and up” claims to kill 99.99% of germs and bacteria but has run into some controversy on whether scientific evidence will back it up. The lawsuit aims to benefit consumers who purchased this hand sanitizer expecting it to work as well as it claims, preventing illnesses like COVID 19. Attached below is a copy of the complaint:
https://www.classaction.org/media/taslakian-v-target-corporation-et-al.pdf
In another case regarding class action lawsuits, namely, Nelcy Alexa Rivera De-Leon, et al. V. Frontier Airlines Inc., passengers were requesting full refunds due to cancellations from the pandemic. They claim that the airline has not refunded them. Many plaintiffs found that the same thing was happening to others. Allegedly, Frontier Airlines was to give out credits for future trips rather than a full refund. Suits against airlines have escalated both in Canada and the U.S. recently.
More class action lawsuits have been filed due to cancelations, this time for school trips. The EF Institute for Cultural Exchange, Inc. and other school trip providers, such as, Education First Class are being sued for allegedly not providing a full refund for cancelations resulting from COVID 19. Plaintiffs allege that the defendants used unfair cancelation policy in their contracts. See, Grabovsky V. EF Institute for Cultural Exchange, Inc., et al, for case details, or attached is the complaint.
https://www.classaction.org/media/grabovsky-v-ef-institute-for-cultural-exchange-inc-et-al.pdf
Adding to that, event cancelations are also becoming an issue, especially festivals and sports games. Namely festivals such as: South by Southwest, Austin Texas Festival, and Lightening In A Bottle festivals. Allegedly, the terms and conditions require no refund for tickets unless otherwise required by law. Plaintiffs are claiming that is void due to unforeseen events, such as the pandemic. Online ticket purchasing websites, such as StubHub, and Major League Baseball are also allegedly facing similar issues. (See Tessa Nesis V. Do Lab, Inc., et al. for reference)
Another big class action lawsuit stemmed from the ongoing pandemic deals with university closing and refunds. Many universities are being challenged for profiting off the pandemic by allegedly refusing refunds for things like room and board, fees, etc. The Arizona Board of Regents, who are in charge of Arizona’s public university system, specifically, is among those being challenged. (See RosenKrantz et al V. Arizona Board of Regents). Along with Arizona universities, many others are facing the same issues for allegedly refusing tuition/fee costs from COVID closures such as: University of Miami, Purdue University, Pennsylvania State, University of Colorado Boulder, and still many others. Attached below is the complaint filed for Penn State University:
https://www.classaction.org/media/thomson-v-the-pennsylvania-state-university-et-al.pdf
In New York, gym members of Town Sports International’s (TSI) allege that while the gyms were closed due to COVID 19, TSI “outrageously” charging members their monthly fee. In Danforth et al V. Town Sports International, LLC, et al, plaintiffs also allege that TSI misrepresented their cancelation policy because they are allegedly not honoring their policy which states a member can cancel at anytime. Other gyms are also facing similar issues such as, 24 hour fitness, and Planet Fitness. Attached below is the complaint filed against Planet Fitness.
https://www.classaction.org/media/holloway-v-planet-fitness-franchising-llc-et-al.pdf
More issues arise in cases involving Zoom Video Communications Inc., and drops in the stock market. Zoom, became popular amid the novel coronavirus. Investors claim Zoom Inc misrepresented their encryption effectiveness. Allegedly, COVID 19 exposed concerns of privacy in Zoom Inc. This supposedly cased a drop in the stock. (Cullen V. Zoom Video Communication, Inc.)
Suits are even being filed for negligence. Cruise lines are being challenged due to alleged negligence during COVID 19. Plaintiffs claim the ships did not follow proper COVID 19 guidelines, and failed to warn passengers of a previous outbreak. One case in particular, Jacob Gleason et al V. Princess Cruise Lines, Ltd. it is alleged that the cruise ship also would not provide refunding if passengers chose to cancel due to negligence regarding COVID 19 safety. Many other plaintiffs filed suits against Carnival’s Princess line. Attached below is a complaint made against Carnival Corporation and Princess Cruise Lines, Ltd.
https://www.classaction.org/media/archer-et-al-v-carnival-corporation-and-plc-et-al.pdf
Along with the said examples, there are still many other class action lawsuits being filed, i.e. workplace concerns, due to the pandemic. To note, these cases are ongoing and have not yet been determined. COVID 19 has definitely affected the system in terms of civil law.

Dodged questions from Facebook’s press call on misinformation
Facebook avoided some of the toughest inquiries from reporters yesterday during a conference call about its efforts to fight election interference and fake news. The company did provide additional transparency on important topics by subjecting itself to intense questioning from a gaggle of its most vocal critics. A few bits of interesting news did emerge:
Facebook’s fact-checking partnerships now extend to 17 countries, up from 14 last month.
Top searches in its new political ads archive include California, Clinton, Elizabeth Warren, Florida, Kavanaugh, North Carolina, and Trump; and its API for researchers will open in August
To give political advertisers a quicker path through its new verification system, Facebook is considering a preliminary location check that would later expire unless they verify their physical mailing address.
Yet deeper questions went unanswered. Will it be transparent about downranking accounts that spread false news? Does it know if the midterm elections are already being attacked? Are politically divisive ads cheaper?
UNITED STATES – APRIL 11: Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg prepares to testify before a House Energy and Commerce Committee in Rayburn Building on the protection of user data on April 11, 2018. (Photo By Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call) // Flickr CC Sean P. Anderson
Here’s a selection of the most important snippets from the call, followed by a discussion of how it evaded some critical topics.
Fresh Facts And Perspectives
On Facebook’s approach of downranking instead of deleting fake news:
Tessa Lyons, Product Manager for the News Feed: “If you are who you say you are and you’re not violating our Community Standards, we don’t believe we should stop you from posting on Facebook. This approach means that there will be information posted on Facebook that is false and that many people, myself included, find offensive . . . Just because something is allowed to be on Facebook doesn’t mean it should get distribution . . . We know people don’t want to see false information at the top of their News Feed and we believe we have a responsibility to prevent false information from getting broad distribution. This is why our efforts to fight disinformation are focused on reducing its spread.
–When we take action to reduce the distribution of misinformation in News Feed, what we’re doing changing the signals and predictions that inform the relevance score for each piece of content. Now, what that means is that information, that content appears lower in everyone’s News Feed who might see it, and so fewer people will actually end up encountering it.
Image: Bryce Durbin/TechCrunch
–Now, the reason that we strike that balance is because we believe we are working to strike the balance between expression and the safety of our community.
–If a piece of content or an account violates our Community Standards, it’s removed; if a Page repeatedly violates those standards, the Page is removed. On the side of misinformation — not Community Standards — if an individual piece of content is rated false, its distribution is reduced; if a Page or domain repeatedly shares false information, the entire distribution of that Page or domain is reduced.”
On how Facebook disrupts misinformation operations targeting elections:
Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Cybersecurity Policy: “For each investigation, we identify particular behaviors that are common across threat actors. And then we work with our product and engineering colleagues as well as everyone else on this call to automate detection of these behaviors and even modify our products to make those behaviors much more difficult. If manual investigations are like looking for a needle in a haystack, our automated work is like shrinking that haystack. It reduces the noise in the search environment which directly stops unsophisticated threats. And it also makes it easier for our manual investigators to corner the more sophisticated bad actors.
In turn, those investigations keep turning up new behaviors which fuels our automated detection and product innovation. Our goal is to create this virtuous circle where we use manual investigations to disrupt sophisticated threats and continually improve our automation and products based on the insights from those investigations. Look for the needle and shrink the haystack.”
TechCrunch/Bryce Durbin
On reactions to political ads labeling, improving the labeling process, and the ads archive:
Rob Leathern, Product Manager for Ads: “On the revenue question, the political ads aren’t a large part of our business from a revenue perspective but we do think it’s very important to be giving people tools so they can understand how these ads are being used
-I do think we have definitely seen some folks have some indigestion about the process of getting authorized. We obviously think it’s an important tradeoff and it’s the right tradeoff to make. We’re definitely exploring ways to reduce the time for them from starting the authorization process to being able to place an ad. We’re considering a preliminary location check that might expire after a certain amount of time, which would then become permanent once they verify their physical mailing address and receive the letter that we send to them.
–We’re actively exploring ways to streamline the authorization process and are clarifying our policy by providing examples on what ad copy would require authorization and a label and what would not.
–We also plan to add more information to the Info and Ads tab for Pages. Today you can see when the Page was created, previous Page names, but over time we hope to add more context for people there in addition to the ads that that Page may have run as well.”
Dodged Questions
On transparency about downranking accounts
Facebook has been repeatedly asked to clarify the lines it draws around content moderation. It’s arrived at a controversial policy where content is allowed even if it spreads fake news, gets downranked in News Feed if fact checkers verify the information is false, and gets deleted if it incites violence or harasses other users. Repeat offenders in the second two categories can get their whole profile, Page, or Group downranked or deleted.
But that surfaces secondary questions about how transparent it is about these decisions and their impacts on the reach of false news. Hannah Kuchler of The Financial Times and Sheera Frenkel of The New York Times pushed Facebook on this topic. Specifically, the latter asked “I was wondering if you have any intention going forward to be transparent about who is going — who is down-ranked and are you keeping track of the effect that down-ranking a Page or a person in the News Feed has and do you have those kinds of internal metrics? And then is that also something that you’ll eventually make public?”
Facebook has said that if a post is fact-checked as false, it’s downranked and loses 80% of its future views through News Feed. But that ignores the fact that it can take three days for fact checkers to get to some fake news stories, so they’ve likely already received the majority of their distribution. It’s yet to explain how a false rating from fact checkers reduces the story’s total views before and after the decision, or what the ongoing reach reduction is for accounts that are downranked as a whole for repeatedly sharing false rated news.
Lyons only answered regarding what happens to individual posts rather than providing the requested information about the impact on downranked accounts:
Lyons: “If you’re asking specifically will we be transparent about the impact of fact-checking on demotions, we are already transparent about the rating that fact-checkers provide . . . In terms of how we notify Pages when they share information that’s false, any time any Page or individual shares a link that has been rated false by fact-checkers, if we already have a false rating we warn them before they share, and if we get a false rating after they share, we send them a notification. We are constantly transparent, particularly with Page admins, but also with anybody who shares information about the way in which fact-checkers have evaluated their content.”
On whether politically divisive ads are cheaper and more effective
A persistent question about Facebook’s ads auction is if it preferences inflammatory political ads over neutral ones. The auction system is designed to prioritize more engaging ads because they’re less likely to push users off the social network than boring ads, thereby reducing future ad views. The concern is that Facebook may be incentivizing political candidates and bad actors trying to interfere with elections to polarize society by making ads that stoke divisions more efficient.
Deepa Seetharaman of the The Wall Street Journal surfaced this on the call saying “I’m talking to a lot of campaign strategists coming up to the 2018 election. One theme that I continuously hear is that the more incendiary ads, do better but the effective CPMs on those particular ads are lower than, I guess, neutral or more positive messaging. Is that a dynamic that you guys are comfortable with? And is there anything that you’re doing to kind of change the kind of ads that succeeds through the Facebook ad auction system?”
Facebook’s Leathern used a similar defense Facebook has relied on to challenge questions about whether Donald Trump got cheaper ad rates during the 2016 election, claiming it was too hard to assess that given all the factors that go into determining ad prices and reach. Meanwhile, he ignored whether, regardless of the data, Facebook wanted to make changes to ensure divisive ads didn’t get preference.
Leathern: “Look, I think that it’s difficult to take a very specific slice of a single ad and use it to draw a broad inference which is one of the reasons why we think it’s important in the spirit of the transparency here to continue to offer additional transparency and give academics, journalists, experts, the ability to analyze this data across a whole bunch of ads. That’s why we’re launching the API and we’re going to be starting to test it next month. We do believe it’s important to give people the ability to take a look at this data more broadly. That, I think, is the key here — the transparency and understanding of this when seen broadly will give us a fuller picture of what is going on.”
On if there’s evidence of midterm elections interference
Facebook failed to adequately protect the 2016 US presidential election from Russian interference. Since then it’s taken a lot of steps to try to safeguard its social network, from hiring more moderators to political advertiser verification systems to artificial intelligence for fighting fake news and the fake accounts that share it.
Internal debates about approaches to the issue and a reorganization of Facebook’s security teams contributed Facebook CSO Alex Stamos’ decision to leave the company next month. Yesterday, BuzzFeed’s Ryan Mac and Charlie Warzel  published an internal memo by Stamos from March urging Facebook to change. “We need to build a user experience that conveys honesty and respect, not one optimized to get people to click yes to giving us more access . . . We need to listen to people (including internally) when they tell us a feature is creepy or point out a negative impact we are having in the world.” And today, Facebook’s Chief Legal Officer Colin Stretch announced his departure.
Faceboook efforts to stop interference aren’t likely to have completely deterred those seeking to sway or discredit our elections, though. Evidence of Facebook-based attacks on the midterms could fuel calls for government regulation, investments in counter-cyberwarfare, and Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s role.
WASHINGTON, DC – APRIL 11: Facebook co-founder, Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg prepares to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee in the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill April 11, 2018 in Washington, DC. This is the second day of testimony before Congress by Zuckerberg, 33, after it was reported that 87 million Facebook users had their personal information harvested by Cambridge Analytica, a British political consulting firm linked to the Trump campaign. (Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images)
David McCabe of Axios and Cecilia Kang of The New York Times pushed Facebook to be clear about whether it had already found evidence of interference into the midterms. But Facebook’s Gleicher refused to specify. While it’s reasonable that he didn’t want to jeopardize Facebook or Mueller’s investigation, it’s something that Facebook should at least ask the government if it can disclose.
Gleicher: “When we find things and as we find things — and we expect that we will — we’re going to notify law enforcement and we’re going to notify the public where we can . . . And one of the things we have to be really careful with here is that as we think about how we answer these questions, we need to be careful that we aren’t compromising investigations that we might be running or investigations the government might be running.”
The Answers We Need
So Facebook, what’s the impact of a false rating from fact checkers on a story’s total views before and after its checked? Will you reveal when whole accounts are downranked and what the impact is on their future reach? Do politically incendiary ads that further polarize society cost less and perform better than politically neutral ads, and if so, will Facebook do anything to change that? And does Facebook already have evidence that the Russians or anyone else are interfering with the U.S. midterm elections?
We’ll see if any of the analysts who get to ask questions on today’s Facebook earnings call will step up.

Real Life Rooms: A Master Bedroom Done in Blues
Hey there Remodelaholic readers! Dawn here, from AD Aesthetic, and I’m back this month with another reader question mockup to hopefully inspire some creative ideas for your space. If you’ve missed any of my previous reader question mockups, you can always see all my posts here.
If you follow Remodelaholic on Facebook, you’ve probably seen several of the reader questions that are submitted every month. Well each month here on Remodelaholic, I choose one reader submitted photo to offer my two cents on, and I create a Photoshop mock up of what I would do if I were in your shoes! (Pssssst— you can submit your reader questions by messaging Remodelaholic on Facebook. Be sure to include a good quality photo!)
First though, my standard disclaimer: While I can recommend ideas that I think look nice, I have never seen this house in real life and don’t have accurate measurements. I am also not an architect or landscaper and do not know the planting recommendations for your area- I just like to make things look nice. I can’t guarantee that any of the items I put in my ‘virtual’ design will actually work in real life (or that they’ll fit your design style for that matter), and this is not intended to be a professional design consultation. So think of this as a just-for-fun rendering that hopefully gets your wheels turning and provides some inspiration!
On to the fun!
READER QUESTION from Tatyana — I need advice on how to decorate master bedroom. We got the dressers as side tables but now they seem too tall for the platform bed. If we remove the legs, I think we will lose some of the aesthetic they bring to the room. Do I put art above the headboard or above the side tables? The ceiling in the room is vaulted and very high. The walls are completely white and I want them to stay that way. The bed and dresser drawers are weathered wood. I would like to keep it natural colors with maybe some gold and light blue accents. Ignore the lamps. These are there until we get something new.
Bedrooms can be tricky to decorate. Not only do they usually have large expanses of wall, especially above a headboard, but because it’s a room guests rarely see, it can be tempting to fill it with leftover decor items or furniture. The problem is, when you spend a lot of time it a room you aren’t crazy about, it can start to affect your mood. Here are a few bedrooms I rounded up that have nice examples of white walls and fun decor around the headboard, to help with inspiration for Tatyana’s space:

Knowing Tatyana wanted a room with neutral colors and splashes of blue, and taking into consideration the mid-century modern vibe of the furniture she already has, here’s what I came up with:

Decorating a large wall around a headboard
Function + Form.
While I’m all for pretty things just because they make you happy, having the perfect combo of form and function is, well, perfect. Take, for example, the gorgeous gold swing lamps I incorporated into this mockup. Not only are they beautiful, but having them mounted on the wall leaves all the nightstand space for practical use. Plus they can be moved closer for reading, or away for a less harsh glow.
See more affordable headboards here.
Decor + Storage.
One of my very favorite things to do with large wall space is to add vertical storage. Floating shelves are beautiful and practical. They fill a lot of visual space, while still looking organized and chic. Plus they add extra space to store all your favorite things, and in this case, bring in some additional gold accents to fit with the color scheme.
See more of our favorite shelves here.
Color + Texture.
To keep this space soft, I went for a ton of texture in the decor. I love mixing high-texture elements with sleek mid-century furniture. The contrast is really nice, and especially in a bedroom, the added texture keeps things from feeling too cold or uninviting. In this space, a woven macrame wall hanging makes a big statement, while bringing in some of the blue color Tatyana requested. The deep indigo duvet also adds a nice pop of rich color and some fun texture that ties into the wall art. Finally, a soft rug underfoot adds some lightness to the space and ties all the colors together.
See more of our favorite rugs here.
So what do you think? What would you do if this were your home?
As always, thank you to Cassity and the Remodelaholic team for having me back each month. If you like this post, and have a design dilemma you’d like me to mock up some ideas for, you can ask your questions by sending Remodelaholic a message over on Facebook, or checkout my mockup design services over on my site adaesthetic.com. And be sure to follow me on Facebook, Pinterest, or Instagram and say hello! Have a great day, friends!

These 5 entrepreneurs want to eliminate global food waste
Image: PIXABAY
Most people know that global hunger is a pressing issue — but what you may not know is that food waste is equally concerning.
This doesn’t seem to make sense: How is it that so many go hungry if there’s so much usable food heading to landfills? If you think the issue of food waste is counterintuitive, you’re not alone. The UN’s Sustainable Development Goals outline a series of objectives to tackle global problems including hunger and food waste, among others.
There are a number of entrepreneurs who recognize that food waste is an unacceptable problem in our modern world — and they’re doing their part to bring the UN’s SDGs like zero hunger, sustainable agriculture practices, and sustainable consumption and production to fruition. Below are five individuals who are making a serious impact on every level of the food waste chain — from farming and agriculture to supermarkets and retail, all the way down to the individual consumer.
Tristram Stuart, founder of Feedback
Campaigning to improve every link of the “food waste” chain.
When Tristram Stuart was just a teenager, he noticed a problem that many of us have likely observed at one point or another: Supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, and grocers throwing away bins full of perfectly usable food.
“We were wasting food at every link in the entire chain,” Stuart says in a video detailing his philosophy behind Feedback, the company he started in 2009 to address the problem of food waste. Feedback organizes action and awareness campaigns (as well as events) that target food waste from — literally — the ground up. From working with governments and international institutions to educating businesses and rallying grassroots organizations and the public, the group aims to be a catalyst for changing global attitudes about food waste.
Stuart has dedicated his career to the issue; while researching for his book Waste: Uncovering the Global Food Scandal, he realized how many of the food waste issues facing supermarkets are tied up in buying policies and cosmetic standards — and sometimes, even stemming from obscure governmental regulations. He founded Feedback to fight these policies on a systemic level.
Feedback’s first awareness event took place in London’s Trafalgar Square in December 2009 and fed 5,000 people — and the resulting media coverage was a catalyst for the UK government to change some of its policies about food waste. Today, Feedback has hosted similar events in 45 cities, and has had significant global impact on the way the world views waste.
Tristram Stuart is part of the UBS Global Visionary program. Read more about his story and learn about other young entrepreneurs making an impact around the world.
Nnaemeka Ikegwuonuu, founder of ColdHubs
Mitigating post-harvest losses for farmers in developing nations.
In Nigeria, Kenya, and Zimbabwe, more than 35 million tons of fruits and veggies are produced each year. Yet, according to startup ColdHubs, 45% of this food spoils due to inadequate storage methods. And beyond this region of the world, post-harvest losses of fresh fruits and vegetables affect 470 million farmers and retailers in other developing nations. The bottom line: Small farmers may lose as much as 25% of their annual income due to spoilage.
Enter Nnaemeka Ikegwuonuu, a Nigerian agriculturist. His startup is a social venture that produces modular, walk-in cold rooms that extend the shelf life of perishable foods — and not just by hours or days, but by weeks. The rooms are fueled by solar panels and high-capacity batteries, making them an eco-conscious solution for portable refrigeration.

The company designs, assembles, installs, and commissions these rooms, which farmers purchase on a pay-as-you-store subscription model. Ikegwuonuu has long-term goals for ColdHubs: He plans to have 1,000 units operating in the next five years.
Tessa Cook, founder of OLIO
Addressing food waste on the consumer level.
While food waste on a mass scale often occurs on the front lines of consumerism (places like grocery stores and supermarkets) or on an agricultural level, in the developed world, almost half of all food waste takes place in the home. Entrepreneur Tessa Cook wanted to do something to cut down the £13 billion worth of food that the UK collectively throws out each year.
“It’s crazy that our solution to too much good food is to throw it away, and that there’s been no innovation since the rubbish bin,” says Cook.
Image: annabel staff photography
To combat this issue, Cook and co-founder Saasha Celestial-One started OLIO, a free app that connects neighbors with local shops and cafes so that surplus food can be repurposed. The app (available for both Android and iPhone) is simple to use: Just snap a photo of items you wish to discard, and neighbors receive alerts and can request whatever piques their interest. Pickup is arranged via private message.
There are multiple use cases for the app, Cook explains: Like when families go on a diet, move home, leave for vacation, over-cater a party, or receive unwanted gifts. (Finally, something to do with all those holiday fruit cakes.)
“Demand for surplus food is incredibly high, with 40% of listings requested in less than an hour, and 86% of listings requested in less than 24 hours,” Cook says. The app, which launched in the UK in January 2016 and globally in October 2016, has accrued more than 225,000 users to date.
“So many go hungry and the environmental consequences are nothing short of devastating,” says Cook. “OLIO aims to make food sharing a viable alternative to the bin, and to do so in a way that is simple, convenient, and fun.”
Amanda Weeks, cofounder of Industrial/Organic
Putting food waste to good use.
So, what about food waste that’s already on its way to the landfill? Amanda Weeks is an entrepreneur tackling the problem from another angle: Using waste as a resource.
Image: amanda weeks
Industrial/Organic, Weeks’ Brooklyn-based startup tackling food recycling in urban areas, finds ways to put the water, energy, and nutrients of food waste to work. Through a multi-step recovery process (technically termed “anaerobic fermentation”), the company plans to up-cycle waste into bio-based products including household cleaners, fragrances, and organic fertilizer. It goes beyond composting; the process generates no methane, and produces fewer emissions and odors than other solutions.
“Our approach closes several crucial loops necessary to support public health, environmental resilience, and economic growth,” explains the Industrial/Organic website. “We reclaim the resources spent on food that is wasted, and reuse them to create a more sustainable system for future generations.”
Keiran Whitaker, founder of Entocycle
Coming full circle: Up-cycling waste for agriculture.
Keiran Olivares Whitaker‘s company, Entocycle, takes another creative approach to food waste recycling — harnessing the power of nature.
“We are using nature to fight on two fronts: Tackling both the food waste we create, and the unsustainability of the protein farming industry,” explains Whitaker.
Entocycle transforms food waste into sustainable, protein-based feed for the agriculture industry — all using the power of insects. The company is developing the first fully automated “smart factory” that produces insect protein meal.
Image: keiran whitaker
“Insects are nature’s recyclers, and a natural food for animals,” Whitaker explains. Entocycle’s darlings are black soldier flies, which transform food rubbish — things like spent beer grains, potato peelings, and fruit and vegetable waste — into viable animal feed pellets. The system employs vertical farming, so it’s able to produce large volumes of product in very small spaces. The whole up-cycling process takes less than a week.
Entocycle’s facility is currently up and running in the heart of London. In collaboration with the Good Kitchen accelerator program, Entocycle aims to revolutionize the $150 billion animal feed industry, eventually replacing environmentally destructive solutions like fish and soy meal.
