so basically @pricemarshfield and i are slowly building a town for modern au to exist and also our tavs are besties there. they became friends while drunk girl bonding in a club bathroom.

here they are having a grand ol time ft. ven’s act 1 hairstyle

so basically for ven specifically, she’s a professor at a nice university and teaches archaeology. she’s only been there for a year, but is doing well on a tenure track. she was a field archaeologist for all of a handful of months expanding upon her thesis work, but an accident at the dig site killed her best-friend-almost-partner and she just couldn’t handle working the site full time anymore. she shifted general responsibility to a trusted colleague and only goes to work and dig for a couple months. she ended up giving teaching a go, having Glowing recommendation letters from her professors, supervisors, and colleagues.

gale is also a professor at this university teaching physics. quantum mechanics, actually, and he does a seminar on cosmology in the spring. they met at a networking event and gale immediately puts his foot in his mouth saying something something one science is better than the other trying to make himself seem more impressive in front of the pretty lady.

she teases him a bit and then he’s like i’m sorry for being bad at talking and she’s like it’s okay I’m sorry for making fun of you let me buy you a drink. and then they fall in love :)

they are domestic with each other in every life btw.

that’s sorta tha gist of ven in this modern au but she also likes to go clubbing with tha girls and that’s it hiii

the cooking line on the ship meme 🥺 do you have any fun stories/headcanons about gale and/or venali in the kitchen?

i’m So glad you asked because the answer is yes i do. and i’m gonna start it with a randomly generated incorrect quote i got from Here

• Once settled in Waterdeep and starting to grow her own social circle, Venali hosts gatherings like book clubs or whatever and makes the Best charcuterie boards. She can’t cook to save her life, but she sure can arrange assorted meats, cheeses, and fruits. She almost immediately scoped out the best places to source her food.

• I think for Venali’s first night in Gale’s tower (their tower now) he tries to cook her a Baldurian meal from a recipe he got from her mom but they don’t have All of the right ingredients so he puts a little Waterdhavian spin on it with his best guess at substitutions. It goes over Super well with her. They eat it together in a small breakfast nook in the kitchen rather than at the dining table.

• I think Gale was underselling his wine collection when he mentions it in act 3. He says it was a lot, but it’s actually way more. He’s also very generous with it, popping open nice bottles whenever they have guests.

• On top of Venali’s personal gatherings, they’re Incredible hosts as a pair. Gale will spend all day in their kitchen cooking up as many dishes as he dares. Most of them are what he’d consider signature dishes, but he always tries to make something brand new to add to the spread.

• Venali discovers she has a bit of a sweet tooth when it comes to Waterdhavian candy and pastries, something she hadn’t really been interested in growing up. Gale makes sure to keep their larder stocked with the items he notices her gravitating toward when they go out together.

• Venali once committed the unforgivable sin of improperly washing one of Gale’s favorite cast iron skillets. It was a labor of love and patience to assure her that it was okay and mistakes happen, but to please not do that again. He showed her later how to season and properly wash it.

• Relatedly, Venali doesn’t mind doing the dishes. They sort of naturally fell into the routine of Gale Cooks, Ven Cleans when making meals together. They learned very quickly that Venali is liable to burn whatever food she handles around an open flame, but she still wants to spend time with him while he’s cooking, so it made sense to handle clean up as they went to make things easier later.

• Venali prefers to wash by hand rather than just prestidigitate the mess away because her wild magic is likely to surge. There was one very unfortunate incident where she accidentally duplicated everything in her immediate vicinity, scaring the hell out of Gale, who nearly caught his sleeve on fire. Another time, she was turned into a fly and nearly crushed by the falling pan she had been holding. The lesson here was it’s okay to become more comfortable being a magic wielder, but maybe not for everything.

• Gale has a self-playing piano in his study, but there is also in the downstairs drawing room. Occasionally, on slow nights or for long-cook meals, they’ll have it play their favorite pieces and dance in the kitchen between tasks.

• Down the line, once their kids are old enough to grip things and competently wield them (yes they have kids I’ve never mentioned but I do think about a lot. Two daughters, Indra and Nadine :3), Gale teaches them (and by extension Venali) how to bake. The girls like making pancakes the best because they get to decide how many chocolate chips or dried fruit pieces go in them.

• The kitchen always looks like a tornado blew through it when they’re done, but that just means they also get to learn how to clean up after themselves.

This is something I actually think about PRETTY often. Like A Lot.

so we're all playing as familiars who have been transported away from our masters in the current campaign. Lucy is norman, a writhing mass of 12-15 snakes. our other friend is a teddy bear called flax. and mine is a mimic (i asked if i could be a mimcat and our dm was like "lmao what if u weren't a coward") known as. blighter.

the world is like a homebrew water-world with lots of islands (i'm told the inspiration is one piece) called the great blue, and blighter's master is a drow artificer from fantasy australia called sheila the tinkerer and i love sheila she's perfect i hope we get back to her. she's like. super unkempt and disheveled and not at all what you think a drow should be. and she met blighter on a ship away from underdarkstralia, when they were poorly disguised as a barrel. blighter isn't very good at the whole mimic thing.

blighter doesn't really have a name, because what real use is a name to a being with such a fundamentally different relationship to selfhood? blighter is whatever you call them. and blighter likes sheila, so blighter is happy to be blighter.

our dm likes to use minis and physical maps a lot (i have exclusively operated on theatre of the mind for the most part so it's a little new for me) so the other day he asked what blighter's resting state was so that he could print me a mini. and i decided to be soooo annoying

i think. if you're going to play a mimic. you are then, inherently, de facto, playing a game that is now about bodies. it's about the relationship of self to body, of self to self, of the changing body to the rest of the world, whose bodies are more static. i think it would be a real missed opportunity for me to not be playing a game about bodies.

blighter is VERY good at pranks - they're a fey creature, and as we all know by now i am insane about fey creatures, so i decided to be annoying Again

so like. yes, but they're good at the kind of pranks fey creatures are good at, which are often cruel and inhumane. they're not an edgelord don't get me wrong - blighter is a team player - but that kind of capricious joy is core to them. they haven't played any pranks onscreen yet but they have a great rapport with flax (they and flax both want to end the monarchy) and i thinkkkk they might be flirting with norman? last session they turned into one of norman's snakes and sort of attached themself to the mass. so. i think they're flirting with norman. i wish i had more of an idea of where the campaign is going so i could do more Planning about them because i think they're soooo cool but i don't want to overwhelm our first-time DM
