Cale is such a Weirdo (I Love Him)
I came to the very reasonable conclusion that Cale Henituse is the weirdest person you could ever imagine.
And I do mean that in the best way.
Basically any question about his character can be answered with: "Well yes, but actually no... except kinda sorta yes...? But maybe no..."
Try it. See for yourself.

Tcf part 2 chapter 278
Tumblr media
One thing I have always loved about Cale is that he never does all that "trying to understand the villain, what could their circumstances be, why are they doing all this evil stuff" bullshit.
When he recognises someone as evil than they're evil. When they've done stuff so cruel it literally makes his blood boil than they're evil. No matter what curcumstances they had they're evil.
Because he as Kim Rok Soo had a tough life too, he had misfortune and death follow him throughout his entire life and yet he would never act the same as ex.: White Star or the Hunters. He knows the circumstances don't define the person but their actions do so why the hell does he need to listen to their reasoning.
The few times he has listened to the people he was against it was because he saw good in them or the same anger against their common enemy and used that to his advatage by bringing people on his side.
Cale is very good at noticing the true character of a person through their actions. And when the actions speak louder than words no way in hell is he trying to analyse these villains. They're evil and messed up and that's it!

Cale Henituse (nee Kim Roksoo- god that is so funny to say it like that) and his experience with love is undeniably Queer.
I mean that in an extremely positive way as part of the Queer community. LGBTIA+, if you use that acronym. I'm not going to specifically assign a specific gender, sexuality, or romantic leaning to Cale during this conversation either. As a character in a novel he is made by and of the author and the reader's meshed experiences.
So let's visit the beginning of his story. (Spoilers for the novel, if you haven't read it.)
Kim Roksoo was a (so far unnamed) kid whose body was stolen as a very young child by The White Star and 'infected' with his curse which was maintained by the God of Death. His mother, clearly depicted as loving him, is not enough to save him. His soul then traverses into another universe and is born again. His parents love him there too. They die too.
Kim Roksoo grows up in a world where everything he loves falls away. Something about his being is unexplainably repelling those he thinks of with love in whatever way it can manage. Simple job opportunities as seen with his social workers all the way up to stripping others of joys until they abuse Roksoo as seen with his uncle. If nothing else works, death is their end instead. Similarly, it can be read further that even things he loves are taken from him via a deliberate lack of worldly possessions and later marveling at the taste of food once he transmigrates. This is not just Beacrox being an excellent chef- even a simple fruit he picks has him drooling at the taste. But, we're getting ahead of ourselves. Roksoo has yet to become Cale.
The apocalypse happens. This doesn't appear to be Roksoo's fault, exactly, but it certainly trails all the damage it can after his specific place in it. By the age of twenty, whether he admits it or not, Roksoo is clearly under the impression that this lack of love is his fault. Something about him has made this happen. His love. His thoughts are shaped by this guess, and for some reason, it works. It works until he can't help but feel safer and settled with Lee Soo Hyuk and Choi Jung Soo.
And then the curse sees he has loved again, that he has BEEN loved for so long, and decides they have to die. At this point, GoD has noticed and decided to nip the problem in the bud. Not by removing the curse from a child long abused by it. Not in fixing the system when it would cost him something he doesn't want to spend.
Instead, he offers Choi Jungsoo and Lee Soohyuk a chance to live... If they let Roksoo die. But, of course, they love him. You don't just let death come for someone you love if you have a say. They say no. And they both die for it. Roksoo carries that weight without crying but is unable to ever forget. To forgive himself. Not even as Cale. Not even when he knows they chose it.
Team One is the team that has never had a single death under Kim Roksoo's watch, isn't it?
At this point, you may be asking what in the fresh hell any of this has to do with being Queer. Being Queer is to have society put a crowbar between you and everything you love. Especially those that love you regardless. It can feel like loving yourself is a stigma that follows you your whole life. If left alone, without support? It shapes the very way you think about yourself and others. Love comes at an unbearable cost unless you throw yourself through three different hoops of obscurity and try not to look too hard at it. And fixing that way of thinking takes years and miles and each kind touch you could ever give.
Any reader would at least eventually agree that the way Cale thinks is intentionally contradictory and even deceitful... but to who? He is absolutely certain that Choi Han is the protagonist. There is no one who should be reading his thoughts at any point. He doesn't know yet that there was a curse, especially not that it's gone now. But subconsciously, it protects him.
(He has, in some way, just lost his whole world again. And he is convinced if he can't bury the love deep enough, it's just going to keep happening.)
But this is where the change that makes this far from a doomed gay narrative kicks in. Also, the real beginning of the novel. Roksoo wakes up as Cale. He wakes up healthy, well-off, and beautiful. Loved, as well, not that it is communicated well by any party at that point.
"It's worth a try."
To Cale though this is clearly more than 'worth a try'. This is his new Life. He loves being here. While burying his love under the layers of contradiction in his mind he grabs every opportunity at friends and family with both hands.
His story is a long one full of ups and downs as he tries to heal. Slacking, I believe he calls it, undisturbed peace where he can pretend to coalesce. But his heart only mends when he is surrounded by people who have grown to trust and love this frankly pitiful man who works himself to the bone for peace. And love. And acceptance for all. And pixie dust.
There is so MUCH about Cale that can reflect anyone in the queer community that has nothing or little to do with his misery. The transition from a body that made him viscerally uncomfortable even though many would view it as peak manhood to a body he quickly and gladly labeled as Making Anything Look Good (even himself) and promptly losing all muscle mass to maintain this idea of his ideal presentation to the world? That's body euphoria gang. It's also bucking gender roles.
The ability to categorize so many people as beautiful and lovely and good while not once hitting on or thinking of them sexually or romantically gets him in the aro and the ace community's back pocket. Hell, it can also slip him right into the bi and pan groups too. And of course, many people love the idea of him being in love with Lee Soohyuk and Choi Jungsoo at the same time, happily adding Polyamorous to that list of possible roles. (Especially considering Gender Anarchy Polyamory, which is invested in the idea that you love how you love and live with who makes you happy even if it's never more than a strong platonic bond. Even if you don't ship the three sexually, they were planning to spend the rest of their lives together on a farm. Without anyone else. That's love too.)
He just... His experiences are so lived by the community once you remove the dragons and the demonic army. Especially the way he has held on for so long in a world that just seems to hate his love. Even when clearly the people in it, individually, want him to stay and be loved back. And the fact that one day he finds himself waking up to a world that while still full of hate and vitriol in places, clearly loves him back? Learning how to trust that. Isn't that what we all want?
So yeah, I said at the start of this I wasn't assigning Cale an identity, but you know what? Cale is Queer. Even if you believe or the author believes he is straight and cis and romance inclined, he has lived this experience of love being punished, so he is ours.

Breaking cycles softly
Already from the beginning, there's this friction between John and Mary. He has the audacity to think he's gonna protect her from a life that she's been living forever and he's known for what... is it even a month? Dont avoid your issues, John. But that's easier said than done. Side note: I gotta say, I really enjoyed watching Drake play evil and possessed John. xD There are a lot of subtle things that remind me of Destiel. That barn made me think of them, especially with the added bonus of that hand print on the door that the soucouyant left. It's not a surprise that John's dad was abusive. It's this cyclical curse that affects not only John but his children and a curse that Dean broke. This is how it works in the SPN universe, Generational trauma and how it possesses you, only to ultimately destroy you. Because its legacy is so often death and violence and destruction of self. This is ironic because the person who has endured the trauma really wants to protect themself. But in doing so, only cause harm, to themselves and others. As Lata says as she bravely steps in front of John to protect him from getting shot (more so when she said earlier that she has nothing to offer, she's not a hunter, only the brains and in doing so questioned her worth in the group) she says: "More violence isn't the answer, not when you spent a lifetime with it, when it's touched everything you ever had", as she steps in front of John, shielding him. So yes, it's John who fights back but Mac (the possessor) realizes that truth and lets go, freeing both himself and John. In an earlier meta, I said that these episodes, the writing feels more hopeful, almost cathartic and I couldn't quite put my finger on why... I think it's this: Many of the conflicts are solved by acknowledging the pain the characters have and the wrongdoings they did (or that happened to them) in the past. When fellow hunter Tracy said she was sorry for what she did to Mac (for blowing up the cave with c4 and killing him) ... that she hadn't known how to help him, that's what finally made him let go. Not a gunshot to the head or a blade to the chest. Lata essentially said to Mac, that it's not too late and that he can break the cycle. She used her words and non-violence in an episode where she questioned her worth and value within the group as a non-hunter. And her strength and her bravery, her words saved them all affirming that there are more ways to fight than with guns and knives. We end with John being honest when pushed as he talks to Mary. He admits to her that what she said was true. That he had used her (and his concern for her safety) as an excuse to avoid his own problems. And later he goes to Lata to ask her how not to live with anger and violence. This all speaks of hope and love and trying to break free of damaging cycles and anger and the past. But I have to say. Although I really love it (and I do lol, it heals me) I'm still suspicious af. Is this really our world? How John is so willing to admit fault and growth is making me question again if this is the same world or timeline as the one where our Dean and Cas and Sam and Jack were in? Are TCF in the same world as TFW or... maybe in some parallel universe. I hope we'll get some definite answers. It's not something I'll really think too deeply about and write meta about but...that feeling won't leave me.

Okay but what Cale did to the Mogoru Empire is literally so funny when you think about it though.
In Molden Kingdom he exposed a shitty monarch and let a legitimate heir take the throne, but he flipped the Empire over completely.
He even says as much explicitly:
[Cale planned to destroy the Empire and the church from the bottom up.
He needed to do that in order to fill them with his own people so that he could restructure the entire place.] (chapter 224)
He destroyed the Alchemist’s Bell Tower, killed the tower master, deposed the emperor and the entire imperial family, and replaced everyone in power with his hand-selected and groomed candidates.
He picks the new leader of alchemy out of the slums; just barges into his house, tells him to sober up and shape up, and installs him as one of the not-empire’s new main power players.
He selects Rex as his ‘leader of the people’, gives him stateship homework (chapter 165), and makes him the new acting king.
And of course the new religious leaders—Holy Maiden Hannah and Saint (soon to be Pope) Jack—are also Cale’s people who he has rescued, sheltered, and enfolded into his massive found family.
Like damn Cale, that’s being a ‘kingmaker’ in the most comprehensive sense and then some.
Cale really looked at the Empire (the only one on the continent by the way) and went, “Hm. Don’t like that.”
And then he flipped the whole country over.

HEADCANON HEIGHTS (WITH AN ATTEMPT TO BE CANON OF COURSE)
So, ok! Why not. That’s my thoughts about THG characters heights. Thank you @lovely-tothe-bone for discussion! And I’m ready for you meta!
What do we know from the books:
Katniss always mentioned that she is “small” but how much small?
THG: When Atala begins to read down the list of the skill stations, my eyes can’t help flitting around to the other tributes. It’s the first time we’ve been assembled, on level ground, in simple clothes. My heart sinks. Almost all of the boys and at least half of the girls are bigger than I am, even though many of the tributes have never been fed properly. You can see it in their bones, their skin, the hollow look in their eyes. I may be smaller naturally, but overall my family’s resourcefulness has given me an edge in that area. I stand straight, and while I’m thin, I’m strong. <...> I’m small enough to tuck the top of the bag over my head, but I put on my hood as well. [the regular length of a sleeping bag is 6’, the small one is 5’6 usually]. <...> She’s [Foxface] even smaller than I am and unarmed, unless she’s picked up some weapons recently. TCF: It's true that Mags can't weigh more than about seventy pounds, but I'm not very big myself. Still, I'm sure I've carried heavier loads. TM: Suddenly, I see myself through his eyes. A smallish seventeen-year-old girl who can’t quite catch her breath since her ribs haven’t fully healed. <...> Peeta to Katniss: You’re not very big, are you?
Ok, IMHO she is small but not so very small, not tiny. 160 cm (5’3) or even 163 cm (5’4) in my opinion.
Peeta is medium height (but what is it exactly?). I think something like 176 cm (5’9) in the first book. 15 cm difference between Peeta and Katniss is very comfortable for cheek kissing standing on tiptoes 😉.
Gale in THG: He was only fourteen, but he cleared six feet and was as good as an adult to me. Ok, Gale is super tall and (like Glimmer) sexy all the way. So let it be 193 cm (6’4) 😅.
Finnick: Tall, athletic, with golden skin and bronze-colored hair and those incredible eyes. <...> He's the biggest [between him, Katniss and Peeta].
Madge: I imagine her really tall [178cm, 5’10] like her father (Madge’s father, Mayor Undersee, who’s a tall, balding man).
Johanna: We know that Peeta's much bigger than Johanna (TCF). So I think something about 163cm (5’4).
The others are totally headcanon 😅. And I can’t not include Peeta’s brothers because I love them both.
Will be happy to hear your thoughts about the topic 😉

hello! what are your plans towards basira's character in the crow's funeral and what's your opinion on her in general? i'm asking 'cause i'm not a big fan of her as a person (although she's an interesting character), and if she's your raisonneur i guess i'd like to know in advance, as i'm not sure i'd be able to interpret "her" opinion objectively? god, this sounds so dumb, but i don't know how to explain it. of course, you're not obligated to change smt in your work or reply to this at all! [1]
I don't think your works have a raisonneur per se, but just in case. i kinda hope your reply helps me overcome personal, well, negative attachment/bias and i get to see basira less like a person i "know" — you're very talented at dissecting motivations and narrative purposes, while remaining impartial.
This is a super interesting ask that I actually had to think about. I also had to look up a word lmao, which hasn’t happened in a while. Also I can already tell that this answer is going to get incredibly long so RIP. I’m going to just write this post about Basira meta and then reblog it with TCF meta.
Unfortunately, I’m not sure I’ll be able to make you like Basira, lol. She’s my least favorite TMA character too. Normally once I spend a really long time tackling a character I get to really like them, but Basira’s only taken center stage in the Role Swap AU and nobody really gets complex character development or exploration there because...crack. It was the same way with Tim and Melanie for me - didn’t have a strong sense of their character until I sat down and hammered out 100k+ words.
I will say that Basira, like everybody else in TMA, is a terrible person. Like Tim, she is a terrible person who thinks that she is a good one, which pushed her redemption arc all the way to S5 (I’m not caught up but I think it’s still happening). Basira has a really proactive, cut through the bullshit, take charge personality, which makes her a useful character in the narrative. She’s also intensely private, doesn’t really say what she feels, and is the quickest to view people in terms of assets or value, which makes her a hard character to really explore without spending a bunch of time in her head - because whatever she’s going through, she’s not going to tell you!
But I do think she’s worth that exploration. I view every character in TMA through the lens of trauma and trauma response, and Basira is no exception. I’d say that she got through S2 and S3 as unwounded as anybody could, only for something very awful and scary to happen to her in the Unknowing. She spends all of S4 falling apart. It’s not obvious, but she is clearly having a breakdown in S4. And she thinks it’s just her! (S4 Basira handshake meme S2 Jon) She’s lonely, afraid, and desperately trying to seize power in a situation in which she has none. I harp a lot about power and power dynamics in TMA, because it keeps on coming up. Basira - like Jon, like Daisy, like Martin, like Melanie, like a LOT of Avatars - is scared and hurt, and she thinks power will stop her from being scared and hurt, so she tries to seize it. Her version of power is knowledge, and keeping herself emotionally distant from everybody so they can’t hurt her, and shaping herself up to be the hero of TMA (like Tim!) when this story has no hero and she’s in S4 and nothing she does is gonna help. It’s really sad. I can’t argue for her being a good person or making good choices, but the thing about TMA is that nobody is a good person or makes good choices, because they are all in the kind of situation where that is impossible. When there’s only bad and worse choices, when you can’t be a good person so long as you’re being pressured and manipulated into doing bad things...yeah everybody sucks lol. It’s taking Basira a long time to stop sucking (and she has other character flaws like being a hypocrite which others have detailed very well), mostly because she (like Tim!) thought of herself as a‘good guy’ which meant that she couldn’t open herself up for change, but I think it’s happening now.
Whoo. That’s a lot. I also get really frustrated with her and I think she’s always been a shit person, but I think mostly her situation is very sad. She’s not flashy or loud or talks about her issues a lot like Tim, Jon, Martin, or Melanie, but they’re there and she’s not dealing with them and she’s trying to deal alone. She doesn’t trust anybody because she thinks people just hurt. It’s a sad way to live, one that’s only born from being hurt very severely, and I’m excited to see her growth in S5.

Cale be like: "Let's just buy the Magic Tower" – everyone else: *shocked Pikachu face*
I don't think enough people appreciate what utterly crazy, audacious, outside-the-box thinking Cale displayed back when he decided on that move.
People overlook it, because Cale does a lot of other crazy, audacious things, both before and after the Magic Tower. But in my opinion, this one was one the smartest and craziest.
From a reader's POV, it might not seem that crazy. Cale naturally presents the ruined Magic Tower as a perfect oppurtunity from TBOAH: it's described to contain a ton of treasures, some of which were found by Toonka and the Anti-Magic Faction, and some of which were lost. It only makes sense that he'd want to loot it and take the treasures.
However, that's not all what Cale did, no no no. Cale didn't just break into the Magic Tower and loot stuff. He actually, legally, bought the whole place, including the land it was standing on. And it was a genius move which changed the course of the entire war in the future.
Let's break it all down, shall we?
First of all, he made a deal with Alberu. Cale used the Crown Prince's money to buy the Magic Tower, and he did it nearly without a warning, which might have pissed him off... However, Cale wanted to make the Roan Kingdom stronger, so he gave Alberu the device belonging to the Liege of the Magic Faction, which would allow him to contact all the magical refugees from the Whipper Kingdom. Basically, Cale paid Alberu back in full – because the Roan Kingdom desperately needed magic users to strengthen their military.
Secondly, Cale created an alliance with Toonka, and thus the entire Whipper Kingdom. This alliance let Cale have influence when they later went to the war against the Empire. Without Toonka being on board, Cale wouldn't have been able to manipulate the battles against Adin the way he did. Against all odds, Toonka actually became one of this most useful allies later on.
Thirdly, by involving himself with the Whipper Kingdom, Cale actually saved it in the long run. Through Cale, Whipper was able to enter the alliance with the other countries who stood against the Empire and Arm. For example, the Jungle helped provide food to the Whipper Kindom – which in TBOAH, they had to steal from the Jungle in order to survive, leading to a conflict between the two. Instead of enemies, Toonka and Litana became allies.
Next, thanks to Cale being the one who proposed bringing back the Whipper Kingdom mages for reinforcements as mercenaries, during the war against the Empire, Cale helped out with lessening the hatred against magic among the citizens. Basically, by creating this debt of gratitude, the Whipper Kingdom won't be discriminating as badly against mages in the future. That's a huge deal.
Also, by becoming the owner of the Magic Tower, Cale had power over the documents containing the studies concerning magic resistance. The Whipper Kingdom wouldn't have used the information benevolently on their own, that's for sure; there was still too much hatred towards magic at the time. By limiting their access to the information, Cale actually helped them as well.
And finally, by giving the Anti-Magic Faction money from purchasing the Magic Tower, Cale literally bought time. He actually delayed the main conflict on the continent – because, as I mentioned already, the Whipper Kingdom was going to face financial problems due to food shortage, which would have resulted in them going after the Jungle (and Elisneh would have fanned the flames by controling Litana's people with illusions, too). He gave the Roan Kingdom more time to prepare for the war, and Toonka went after the Empire instead, gathering their attention and pulling it away from Cale's country. What feels natural progression for the readers was actually a huge divergence from what happened in TBOAH.
It might have seemed like a simple move at the time in the novel, based entirely on Cale's scammer's way of thinking and greed for money. But it was so much more than that. It was a very calculated, extremely bold move, which Cale came up entirely on his own.
...You think it was obvious to anyone in that world that you could simply buy a building such as the Magic Tower? That it was even an option? Not a chance!!!
It was essentially the fortress belonging to the true rulers of Whipper Kingdom. It was like a royal castle. Who in their right mind comes up with buying the castle of the rulers of a foreign country, right after a major revolution?? Such places are normally never for sale! The only reason it worked in the first place was because Toonka was so crazy he couldn't care less about it! It would have never worked if the Anti-Magic faction hated the magic users any less than they did!!
What Cale did was utterly ingenious. He doesn't get enough credit for such a ballsy move.

Let's do some expanding and flipping the script on the concept of soulmates sharing Pain. (These are my own thoughts, thusly influenced by my own experiences with chronic pain and its management, understanding the pain scale and its internal bias' on all parties, and must be taken as such.)
So. Sharing pain with soulmates has been pretty surface level for good reason; dealing with the nitty gritty of how such things would impact the medical systems of the world is pretty hard, and the way it would change Pain Ethics is also a task of such magnitude I wouldn't do it unless it paid. But I have considered one thing.
What if the pain... It isn't equivalent. What if it's internally modified by the others' pain scale.
This might not make sense to some of you, so let me explain.
On a scale of 1 to 10, how much pain would you consider... Hmm... Straining a muscle? If this was a classroom I'd ask you to look around at your peers. This is because the few times I've asked this question there is only one constant. Even if there are only 3 people responding, their numbers do not all match. But I've yet to have anyone ask me what my scale is before giving me a number. Mine is also at play here. What I consider the number urgent pain starts at is a mystery to you.
Considering that... One person's sprained muscle is another's easily ignored pain (1), and someone else's worst pain in their life (10). In a soulmate AU, let us consider the idea of Pain Adjustment. It takes the person experiencing the actual pain that is damaging them and uses their scale to modify it for the recipient soulmate. This could be necessary for various reasons; adequate response to pain regardless of your own internal experiences.
Now imagine you're connected to a child while being a teenager. They've just skinned their knees, and for them, it is a 10. it's absolutely the worst pain they've experienced in their whole lives because they're so young. The bond processes the level of pain and delivers it rent-free to your brain.
It feels like you've just shattered your kneecaps.
But it goes away. That's the thing; Your pain echo is no longer viable to be measured in scale; It has to be measured in time. in how long it takes for the brain to stop sending the signal. Kids forget about skinned knees in five minutes. you just have to weather 5 minutes of shattered kneecaps.
This can actually cause problems if you believe your soulmate has a lower or higher pain threshold when they don't, causing a lack of urgency in an otherwise well-intentioned and romantic warning system or an overreaction that discredits future worries. Especially in a world that is through this system far more likely to have medical practitioners who will not believe chronic pain diagnosis without a soulmate agreeing 1:1 with their partner. Asthma can leave the recipient soulmate just slightly winded in these cases.
To be frank, it can cause more problems than not, and that makes this version of soulmates so deliciously JUICY I can barely stand it.
