OCtober day 11: craft
this one was a bit tricky, so i went with one of my minor ocs, Tarelen (aka Hush). Didn’t realize just how much he preferred using the others’ nicknames until i started typing! anyway here’s my elf boi making a gift for his dumb human crush, Silks (aka Kàde).
@oc-growth-and-development
---
Hush quietly whittled the wood in his hand. He was more than aware of the nearby templars watching him. Mages in the Tower weren’t normally allowed anything sharper than a quill tip, let alone an actual knife.
He still couldn’t believe the First Enchanter had allowed it. And all he had to do in return was stay at this table as he worked and turn the knife in before he left the room. It was quite the deal. Considering who his friends were and the sort of trouble they got into, he was always pleasantly surprised whenever Irving and Greagoir allowed him to do anything special like this.
Then again, out of the lot of them, Hush knew he was the most respectable of the group. He’d undergone his Harrowing at a far younger age than most of the mages in the Tower and passed with flying colors. For a long time, he’d been the only fully-fledged mage until Trouble passed his. But, as Trouble was always in trouble, he'd lost most of the perks that came with the rank before even earning it.
He imagined the next in line would be Silks. The Orlesian-born mage was skilled, if not a bit flashy, but Hush still couldn’t help but worry how he would react upon realize he had to fight off a demon. Knowing Silks, it would probably be a desire demon, or maybe even Pride.
Hush hoped it wasn’t. He hoped it would be something easy, like a rage demon. He’d probably still run around screaming for a bit, but he was clever. He’d figure something out and defeat it.
If not… If anything happened to that ridiculous boy… If Hush lost him…
He shook his head, focusing on the carving in his hands. Silks would be fine. He was sure of it. But, just to be safe, he was making him a—
“Hush!”
The elf froze. Speak of the wolf and he will appear.
Silks grinned across from him, taking a seat. “Here you are, my dear Hush. I was looking for you all morning. I thought maybe you were causing some mischief without me,” he said with a wink.
Hush scoffed, continuing his work. As if he would do anything so obvious. Causing a ruckus in the middle of the day was Silks and Fauna’s style, not his. Hush was far more careful with his trickery than them. So careful in fact that few in the Tower even believed he took part in their group’s mischief making.
Silks nodded at the wooden figure. “What’s that?”
His cheeks warmed. “A gift,” he muttered.
“Oh, for who? Is it for me?” Silks’s smile grew. “It’s for me, isn’t it?”
Hush ignored him.
“You’re blushing. It’s for me.”
He glared at the smug shem. Silks orange eyes were dancing with mirth as he smirked across the table. Hush let out a low grumble, his face getting even hotter.
“It looks very nice,” Silks said sweetly. “You’re so talented, Hush. I wish I could take you to my family’s estate in Val Royeaux. We have the loveliest white trees along the south wall.” He sighed, getting that faraway look in his eye when he talked about his old home. “I’d bet you could make something brilliant out of those trees...”
Hush hummed, trying not to enjoy the praise too much, but was pleased to know his small talent was enough to capture his eye. Despite living in Ferelden’s Circle Tower longer than the rest of them, Silks still had his expensive tastes. That was why they called him “Silks” in the first place.
“I see you smiling, Hush.”
“I’m not.”
Silks laughed and Hush felt his heart beat faster.
“Whatever you say, my love,” he teased.
Hush sighed, wishing he wouldn’t say such things so carelessly. He wondered if he would call him those sweet names without the humor… But that would be bad. Mages weren’t allowed to have relationships. If the templars suspected anything serious between them, they might send one or both of them to other Circles as punishment. Hush didn’t want his family to be ripped apart because he couldn’t keep his stupid feelings in check.
“Kàde,” a soft voice hissed. They turned their heads to see Flames hurrying over to the table. “Kàde, Lav’s going to set nug dung on fire in the barracks. You need to stop her or they’re gonna throw her in a cell for a month!”
Hush groaned. Fauna was always doing something ridiculous like that. It was as if she enjoyed being on the templar’s Most Hated list. He was, as always, extremely grateful for Flames’s clairvoyance. If not for her warnings, they would’ve been torn apart a long time ago by their own stupid actions.
Silks shook his head. “That elf has a death wish, I swear. Thank you, Elia,” he said standing with a smile. “Why don’t you stay and keep Hush company?”
“Because you won’t find her in time if I do,” she said fidgeting.
He huffed. “Fine, fine. You’ll be alright alone a while, darling?” he asked with that teasing grin.
“Go away, Silks,” Hush growled.
The shem laughed and headed for the stairs.
Flames stayed behind a moment, then smiled at him. “You have no idea how happy he’s going to be when you give that to him,” she said pointing to the carving in his hand.
“Will he like it?” he mumbled, his cheeks getting warm again.
The white-haired girl smiled and nodded as she turned to follow their friend. “He’s going to love it, Hush. He’ll be speechless!”
Hush snorted out a laugh and went back to his whittling. Silks? Speechless? He shook his head, grinning. He’d believe that when he saw it himself.

The Oclunnumi - By Trevor Alan Foris
Tumblr media
Octunnumi book is a mysterious fantasy fiction novel written by Trevor Alan Foris.
This book takes you on a fantastical mystery tour to the world of  the Tarelen people; a people who exist everywhere and yet nowhere, in a world of mythical creatures and magical happenings that are in no way mythical or magical… After all, when you exist, can you be deemed a myth? Equally, when being telepathic and telekinetic is second nature, is it considered magic? Of course, the ability to live many lives… well now, that is something quite different and carries its own responsibilities.
My mum actually informed me about this book that she found on FaceBook. She sent me the website and I was immediately confused to what was going on and what The Octunnumi was. The website takes you straight to a blank screen that plays a little message, a teaser of the book basically. I was so confused but also contradicting what it was saying. For example it said “Magic is not a thing.” It really made me think that possibly it is. I just really love the mysteriousness of it all.
As soon as I heard about this book, I went straight to amazon to order it. It's actually a reasonable price of £25, but it’s currently unavailable due to the high demand of the books. They don’t have a certain amount of the books stocked, they make the books according to the demand of orders. From the images I’ve seen of the book, it looks like some big spell book. I think the packaging looks so cool, with the golden swirls and clog-like symbols.
Tumblr media
Along with the peculiar book, The Octunnumi embraces the use of AR meaning you can download the free The Octunnumi app on your phone, where you can activate and bring to life hidden layers within the book cover and interior text. Each copy sold of the book also generates a donation to The Octunnumi’s chosen charities, which is amazing.

April TBR-
Tumblr media
Another month, another TBR. This month we’re not going to let me kill myself trying to read too much....right? Last month was a little crazier than expected, but that was because I got a surprise ARC for a book coming out in April. It just pushed everything forward so I’m hoping April is a bit easier on me.
1. Network Effect by Martha Wells--Book #5 in the Murderbot Diaries. It’s the first full length novel in the series. Rereading this one before the next book comes out at the end of the month.
2. An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green--I’m rereading this one for the podcast my husband and I do together. There should be a link to that somewhere. This is a first contact with aliens story that also discusses instant fame and the problems that can stem from social media.
3. Fugitive Telemetry by Martha Wells (NetGalley ARC)--This was my surprise ARC! I was so absolutely over the moon about getting approved for this one. So, I had to speed up my reread of the Murderbot Diaries to get to it before it comes out. This will be #6 in the Murderbot Diaries and another novella.
4. Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo (New Release)--This is the finale to the Nikolai duology. I’m excited and a little nervous based on how the last one ended. I just want all my Grishaverse babies to be okay.
5. Windwitch by Susan Dennard--Book #2 in the Witchlands series. Rereading in preparation for the next book coming out this summer. This is a New Adult/YA Fantasy series that I marathon read right after getting out of being sick with covid so I don’t remember each book individually which is part of why I’m rereading the series.
6. The Octunnumi by Trevor Alan Foris--Yes, I was one of those people who impulse purchased this one after seeing people unbox it. There’s not a lot known about this book right now but because just opening it is such an experience there are a lot people in the online Book Community picking this one up. It seems a bit like an Absurdist Fiction/Fantasy novel. The GoodReads says: “The Octunnumi does not exist. Fosbit and any files relating to Fosbit do not exist. The Tarelen peoples that protect and provide sanctuary for the Avitens of Fethrist are not real. The abilities of the Tarelen peoples with their heightened skills, living in their Utopian world are myth, their purpose here mere tales; rumours of their reincarnations enabling them to live may lives...ridiculous! And there is definitely no magic. None at all. No, really, there isn’t. Magic is not a thing.  There are also no hidden worlds or mythical beings coexisting just out of sight. Equally, there are no secret access points to these hidden worlds that don’t exist, and there is no, ‘unfinished business from the past’ that is set to destroy, well, anything. There is no disaster looming. Anyway, regardless of any potential threat that may or may not be present, this publication, The Octunnumi and any reference to any other beings is a work of fiction. And for the record, Scariodintts, should they exist, are perfectly lovely beings whose purpose in life is grossly misunderstood.”
7. The Vanishing Stair by Maureen Johnson--Book #2 in the Truly Devious series. Rereading in preparation for the next book in the series. The Truly Devious series is about a girl named Stevie Bell who goes to a boarding school in the mountains of Vermont to solve the kidnapping and murders that happened there in 1936, but while investigating more murder starts happening at the school.
8. A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor by Hank Green--Book #2 in the Carls series. Rereading this one as well to discuss with the husband on the podcast. This one follows up from the cliff hanger at the end of book 1 so I can’t really get into it.
9. The Shadows of London by Nick Jones (NetGalley ARC)-- A time traveling antiques dealer. That was all I needed to know to request the book so I’m excited to get into it.

Nombres Élficos
Una lista de nombres élficos encontrados en el juego, en las novelas y el lore.
Prefijos comunes: El- Ari- Mar- Nes-

30 Questions to Help Develop Your Dalish Clan
8. Are they nomadic? Semi-nomadic? Or do they have a permanent settlement? How has this affected them?
I think semi-nomadic would be the best way to describe them, as they travel a lot along the southwestern desert region of Thedas, but they also have a couple of permanent settlements they regularly come back to.
For example, there’s a large cave system where they find shelter during summer while waiting for the worst of the sandstorms in the Hissing Wastes to pass. Over the years they’ve secured the place with magic wards, and built a ventilation system and an artificial lake for a magically endless supply of fresh water like the Ortan thaig river / lake. Another such permanent settlement is further north in the Blasted Hills, near a Deep Roads entrance, and they travel there once a year to trade with the dwarves from Kal-Sharok.
But between these settlements, their lodging is temporary and highly portable, and they do use magic extensively for easy travel, so I guess that’s how it affected them the most-- having to find solutions to problems posed by living in a literal scorching wasteland made them (and their magic) highly practical.
18. How many people are part of the clan on average?
Roughly 40 of them travel together at any given time, but the entire clan consists of upwards of 50 people. Many of them have the role of emissaries, so they come and go as they travel independently from the rest of the clan to meet other nearby Dalish clans or the dwarves from Kal-Sharok, and sometimes go as far as Orzammar.
28. In what ways does the clan honour and revere the Elven Pantheon?
Ghilan'nain is especially important to the clan, but I haven’t actually thought about this a lot Yet, so here’s some small things related to her:
they travel at night and use the stars to navigate, so they very strongly associate the night sky with Ghilan'nain and revere it accordingly
they refer to the moon as Ghilan'nain’s eye; whenever it appears on the sky during daytime it’s consider a sign of good luck and the children make a wish
similarly, the auroras are Ghilan'nain’s hair and there are bedtime stories about silly halla who ran so fast they leaped into the sky and got tangled in Ghilan'nain’s hair! :)
everyone picks a star when they receive their vallaslin, and regardless of which member of the pantheon it honors, they all pray for Ghilan'nain’s blessing and guidance
the star they choose is a permanent presence all through their lives and they turn to it in times of trouble and joy alike. it reminds them to remain humble, but never forget that even on a cloudy night, there are thousands like them out there and they’re never truly alone
Other random stuff:
each child receives two names at birth: one that everyone will learn and use in day-to-day life, and one that will be known only by the child’s mother and another clan elder, so that Fen’Harel may never learn their real name
when they talk about “Fen’Harel’s breath,” what they talk about are the sulphur pits
they have a tale about Tarelen, a historian and scholar and one of the very first members of the clan. it’s said that he was once visited by the ravens Fear and Deceit, and for three days and nights the ravens tried to dishearten him and make him renounce his work and his people by whispering awful things to him. but instead of listening, Tarelen remained silent and kept writing and writing, day and night without interruption, until the dawn after the third night came and his quill broke in two. seeing this, the ravens broke into a mad cackling, thinking they’ve finally managed to break his resolve. Tarelen, however, merely reached out and snatched one feather from Fear and another from Deceit to make new quills out of them. and so the defeated ravens scattered into the sky and never returned. the oasis where Tarelen is said to have rested after this encounter is known as “the place where Fear and Deceit have lost their feathers”

Making Up Elven Names
This is a compilation of some Dragon Age elven names I’ve been adding to sporadically. I was hoping to have a longer list before sharing it, but hey, I can always update and probably will.
Sources include the DA Wiki, Katie’s Best Guess at Elvhen, and this thread.
Regarding pronunciation: According to David Gaider, elven names tend to avoid hard consonants. (Ex. C as in ‘car’ is hard, C as in ‘cell’ is soft.) Take or leave this, lol.
Gender: I suppose I could use (F) (M) (N) based on what I think sounds that way, but really, who am I to decide that? So I will leave that up to the reader.
Common prefixes, found in-game, lore, and novels: El- Ari- Mar- Nes-
Common suffixes, found in-game, lore, and novels: -wen -riel -ora -anni -aya -rian -el
You can mess around with the above parts however you feel like, if you so choose.
You might also consider naming your character after a past elven hero.
City Elves
While there are a few city elves who we’ve seen having elvhen names, most do not. City elf names are most commonly Hebrew, with a decent number of Gaelic, Welsh, and Old English. You can use many different baby name websites to find them, but be careful; when you find one you like, it’s probably best to check a few different sources via Google to be sure about the origin/meaning, if you care about that.
Another idea, maybe: City elves typically have even less knowledge of their own culture than the Dalish, and probably only know bits and pieces of the language. I think it’d be realistic to assume there are many elves who have names composed of elvhen words/parts and “King’s Tongue/Orlesian/etc” affixes. This list does not include these options, but the reason I’m bringing this up as something to think about? IDK.
Dalish Elves and Elvhen
There are a number of Dalish elves who have “regular” names from for example, Hebrew origins as well. But a lot of them have “elfy” names.

This is for @oc-growth-and-development‘s OCtober prompt thing! Go check it out!

First, it was just her and Kàde. She was glad about that. She tried imagining what it would’ve been like if she’d met any of the others first, but it was never as nice. Kàde wasn’t necessarily nice as a person, but he was kind. And – oddly enough – more like her than any of the others.
Lav wouldn’t have talked to her. Elia loved her but knew she could be very mean and had little patience for people she saw as odd. She probably would’ve looked at her like all the others, like some weird freak. She did back when she was first brought to the Tower, but at least Elia spoke Common by then. If Lavender had tried speaking to her back when she couldn’t? Their friendship never would’ve happened.
Tarelen wouldn’t have talked to her either, but that just how he was. Once he realized she knew elvish, he might’ve sat next to her at meals and during class, but he still wouldn’t have talked much. It might’ve gotten easier as they got more used to each other, but she couldn’t see Hush reading to her, speaking to her, teaching her Common the way Kàde painstakingly had. They would’ve been acquainted and probably enjoyed each other’s company, but Elia still would’ve been unbearably lonely.
And Anders… Anders never spoke. He never sat with anybody. If someone came up to him at mealtime, he left. If they tried talking to him during class, he ignored them. He and Elia would’ve barely crossed paths. Maybe after a few years, when he grew into that charming, playful boy she’d had a crush on, he would’ve approached her. But Elia doubted, being so isolated for so long, that she’d want anything to do with anyone at that point. Even him.
But it was Kàde who’d already there in Ferelden’s Circle Tower. Kàde who approached her, who realized she didn’t speak Common and that Ferelden was as foreign to her as it was to him. Kàde took the lost, lonely half-elf under his wing and played with her, taught her, and eased her loneliness.
Brilliant, kind Kàde saw the quiet, scarred Dalish boy and pulled him into the fray, helping him find his voice. Kàde inspired the wild girl from Denerim, their penchant for mischief growing with her addition. He joked about it, called himself a collector of interesting elves in the Tower. But the truth was, he was the best thing to happen to any of them. He’s the one who took that bleak, cold tower and turned it into a home for the three of them.
Had Elia not had his hand to hold, she wouldn’t have been able to grow. She never would’ve tried to warn the mute boy from the Anderfels of his plan’s failure, never would’ve offered him help despite his silence and cold stares…
But maybe that would’ve been better. If they’d never been friends, she wouldn’t have all the suffering, pain, and guilt they’d caused her. She could’ve cut Anders down immediately for his crimes. She never would’ve reentered the Tower that black day. She would’ve been spared so much heartache and tears.
But then she thought of those days of their youth… of the love and laughter that echoed throughout her memories.
She thought of her, Hush, and Lav perched at the top of one of those tall bookcases on the first floor, Kàde accusing them of mutiny and abandonment while Anders fed him ridiculous lines. Of her and Hush glancing up from the table at the sound shrieking, seeing the other three whiz by the door – choking on laughter – with a pair of angry templars hot on their heels, sharing a look, then go back to reading. The way Lavender would pull at her bedsheets in the dead of night, demanding Elia join her on the bottom bunk so she could recount her newest conquest, the latest gossip, or just cuddle. Anders tricking the younger templars into letting the two of them out onto the grounds to share a beautiful afternoon in the sun. Kàde smiling at her when she spoke Orlesian unprompted, warning others not to mess with his “cousin”, writing to his family when she was being brought before the Divine — which, quite literally, saved her life.
No matter what had happened, what any of them had done, it didn’t taint those days. After all these years, the memories still made her smile. It made her cry, too, at times, but she always smiled. She still had pieces of them with her, who they really were, in her heart. Not even the blood on her hands could change that.
