#they're largely ds and 3ds games HOWEVER the first 3 were remastered for switch! making them EVEN MORE ACCESSIBLE! #i will warn you the games are slightly notoriously punishing but the recent remasters DO add difficulty settings #which means you can avoid some of the more notoriously punishing aspects #AND THE ART STYLE IS SO GOOD. AND THE /MUSIC/ #the aesthetics of etrian odyssey are some of my favorite video game aesthetics they're so NICE #so i am now using my 10k followers to try to convince One Other Person to play my pet rpg series. #my one warning is that if you play rpgs for the story. etrian odyssey expects you to make up a lot of the characters in your head #and tells you the bare bones of a story in second person #which isn't to say that's BAD; it's really good i get attached to my party of five ocs really fast #it's just if you're used to jrpgs you WILL go in and go 'wehre. is the plot.' #its there! the games just expect you to make up much of it! and it's great! #my point is: if you're going 'huh i might like dungeon crawlers' CHECK THEM OUT

Words are the closest thing to a way I can make sense of my somewhat-of-a-self-identity-crisis-but-in-writing thing, and even then it can only express a mere fraction of whatever it is that I'm feeling. So bear with me as I try to verbalise this in an at least semi-coherent way.

I've been trying out a variety of writing styles and techniques lately. I've been discovering ways to do more of 'showing' and less of 'telling'.

I like the indirectness of it.

Actually, no -- that's not quite it. That's not it at all.

I think I like telling stories obliquely and only providing vague details not only because I'm a lazy arse who has no idea how to describe things in a direct and clear way but also because-- actually, I have no idea how to explain this in a way that isn't incomprehensible.

I can't quite explain it, but I think I like stories that can only be told in a vague way, like providing the puzzle pieces so that you get to piece things together the way you want it. The resulting picture would just be your own interpretation. I just like being subtle and merely imply the meaning of some things so anyone can interpret my stories their own way.

No, no. That doesn't make any sense either, does it?

And that's only one of the many things I'm still trying out and working on!

It's just. There's so much to try! I don't even know what I want. I've said this in my recent fic's A/N and I'll just say it again here: I'm experimenting with different things in writing the way a child would mix soap and shampoo in a bath. Which is a waste of time (and of shampoo and soap, which clearly does not apply in this scenario, but again, really cba to think of a better analogy here) but I can't help it because it's so fun.

Sometimes I think I don't even *have* a style. Sometimes I think I'll never have one. But I dunno.

Just ignore me as I try to mull this over. I'm just 'in my feels' and screaming this out into the abyss that's in the form of my silly little blog. Thank you for indulging me.

Do…. Do people actually have an issue with stuff being written in present tense?

#I’ve heard of POV preference but seeing all these posts about how much people dislike present tense #maybe I’m just not an observant reader but I can count the number of times I’ve actively noted a book/fic’s tense on one hand #and almost always it was because I liked how it worked with the author’s writing style #you’re telling me people will consider dropping something JUST because it’s in present tense?? #genuinely can someone explain this to me? #I know some people don’t like first person pov because it feels too close and ‘I’ didn’t do anything. the character did #(I don’t really see it that way and don’t mind first person though I prefer third person) #and second person pov is rare and people don’t like it for the same reasons (being told what they as a reader ‘did’) #(I personally like second person pov a LOT but also prefer it to be a little treat actually suited to the story) #but verb tense?? as long as it all works grammatically I don’t see an issue #a lot of the examples I see of how present tense doesn’t work is showing two paragraphs side by side in the past and present #and I will agree that the present reads worse comparatively #but also it’s because the sentences were obviously (at least imo) written and structured for past tense first #and then ‘translated’ to present tense if that makes sense #I personally like how present tense lets me play with my sentences #but also I know that when I play with time and have a character recount past events within their own internal musings I switch tense #which I would think is allowed?? but maybe that’s bad form and I’m proving the point why past tense is ‘superior’ #(I don’t really care for fic writing purposes as long as it flows and isn’t distracting but who’s to say) #anyways this was long but yeah. genuinely curious about this one #white weasel talks #tbd probs
