Threads No. 001, Susan Washington

This is the first of several new additions to the "Threads" series. The work is created using textile from vintage couture as well as painted textile, pieces are ripped and pieced together to create a strong composition, affixed to the surface where threads hang down and secured to the surface to act as "drips" of paint from the work. The pieces is varnished in a UV protective matte finish and ready to hang.

Gordon Parks, Airline Terminal, Atlanta, Georgia, 1956Little is known about the circumstances of this photo. Gordon’s notes describe the woman as a “nursemaid for the white woman’s baby.” The photo stands as a document of race relations in the South in the 1950s.

*Currently on exhibit* Working with collage to create layers of interest, strong composition with painterly feel. Inspired again by artists such as Marca-Relli and Motherwell I first painted the surface with acrylics and then painted thin pieces of muslin, tore it and used that as my medium. Created on canvas with a high gloss varnish, gallery wrap and ready to hang. Nice paired with City Of Angles I.

This piece is created on wood panel using acrylic paint, dress patterns and layered painted paper, thread and other medium. The work can be read as a landscape or seascape with areas of rest and action. There are "bridges" and guides to guide the viewer around the canvas. Always something new and interesting to be found. It has a double cradle frame from behind and a thin artist strip frame encasing the entire edge, ready to hang. Please note because of the work being on wood panel there may be little differences in texture etc. These are normal variations.

This 30 x 40 original is constructed using linen on linen with acrylic and graphite. I have always been inspired by Conrad Marca-Relli and his canvas on canvas cut outs. This is my abstract interpretation of female form using a similar technique. Line work is formed naturally through slight separation of varying shades of white.

I've also made use of pattern pieces, threads and vibrant french pastel colors. This piece is framed from behind with a 1" wood cradle and has a high gloss epoxy resin finish. The finish is hand applied with areas of perfect imperfection intentionally so as to see the input of the artist and not to look like a machine manufactured piece of art.
