Sometimes something needs to go very wrong in order to go right in the end as Super Mario 64 (Nintendo EAD, 1996) teaches us.

In Super Mario 64, positioning Mario underneath the lowest rotating platform on the bottom of Tick Tock Clock at the highest clock speed will result in the platform continuously squishing Mario for extremely brief periods, without actually harming him.

pannenkoek's explanation video of SM64's invisible walls is interesting because from the perspective of someone with a background in gamedev it seems like the random invisible wall bug of SM64 only occurs because the game was made before certain practices in 3D game development were standardized.
To try and summarize the problem as briefly as possible, the bug occurs in places where there's a gap in level geometry, and gaps occur because the positions of polygon points are truncated. This only causes an issue if your geometry has T-vertexes, which is a big no-no in modern 3D modeling, and can easily be solved by sub-dividing a few polygons.
Below is an example I found online of a T-vertex that needs to be solved (since explaining what they are takes too many words)
Tumblr media
In this example, you can fix the T-vertex by turning that triangle into two triangles.
To put it into perspective, if your 3D models have T-vertexes in the modern era some 3D modeling software won't let you render them without flashing a warning to fix it first.
This isn't an issue of technical limitations on SM64's part. Solving the issue would require creating more polygons but not nearly enough to affect performance by any means. This is a case of 3D modeling being such an early pursuit that no one knew what not to do yet.

Throwback to that one time I threw Twitter into chaos over whether or not Princess Peach is the artist behind the paintings at her castle. A lot of people were all for it, but some were so vehemently against it that they tried to debunk it.  It’s just a silly headcanon, dudes. Calm down. Peach does more than just bake and get kidnapped. Let her have her hobbies.

In Super Mario 64, if Mario approaches a Bob-omb without being seen and stands close to its spawn point, it will continue walking in a straight line without ever turning around as long as it does not encounter any obstacles or uneven ground and Mario does not move away from the spawn point. Note how it walks straight ahead in the footage despite its usual behavior being walking in circles.
If it encounters a slope while walking, it will change directions. If it happens to change directions in such a way that it looks directly at Mario, it will see him no matter how far away it is at that moment, even if it would never be able to see him from that distance under regular circumstances.
Taken together, this results in the bizarre scenario seen in the footage, where Mario is doing literally nothing while the Bob-omb first decides to walk extremely far away, suddenly "realizes" Mario was there the whole time, and attempts to pursue him only to explode before even reaching him.
