a/n: hello! thank you for making a request, i really appreciate it. i decided to make this a drabble because i wasn't able to expand this request into an imagine. merry christmas, and reminder that requests are open if anyone wants to make one.

“(Y/N)?”

Tanjiro had felt a range of emotions when Kiyo, Sumi, and Naho told him that there was another person recovering in the butterfly mansion besides himself, Zenitsu, and Inosuke. He felt bad for being excited to learn the other patient was (Y/N). Her presence in the mansion meant that she was injured, but at the same time he was excited to see her after months since their last meeting. Once he felt better, he decided to pay her a visit.

She looked well. There were bandages wrapped around her knuckles to her elbows on both her arms, and bandages wrapped around her neck. But, she was sitting up on her own and she was looking out the window. She was injured, of course, but Tanjiro had been worse off many more times before. He was sure that (Y/N) would probably recover before all of them and be on her way to continue slaying demons. She did appear dazed, though.

(Y/N) was staring out the window, as though she wasn’t really in the room right now but somewhere far away. Lost in her own mind that she didn’t even seem to notice that another person had entered the room. Tanjiro gasped, slightly as an intrusive thought entered his mind. What if she was ignoring him? She had incredible instincts as a slayer, she was trained to never let anything sneak up on her. She must be upset with him for some reason or another, not that he could think of some offense he must have committed.

She looked down at her hands. “Tanjiro. Aoi told me that you were here, are your injuries serious?” She questioned, and he could hear that she had been crying in the shakiness of her voice, so unlike her usual confidence.

Tanjiro shook his head, “I am feeling much better. Are you okay, (Y/N)?”

The girl tried to nod, before she shook her head honestly. When she turned to finally face him, there were tears gathered in her (e/c) eyes.

Tanjiro’s mouth gaped open in shock and horror. Tanjiro had known (Y/N) since he had first become a demon slayer. He had known her for years, although he only saw her every couple of months, for a different amount of time each time they crossed paths. Tanjiro thought of her as a good friend. She had always been courteous and more than accepting of Nezuko. And in all that time, he had never seen (Y/N) even upset, let alone crying. He moved his aching legs to enter the room properly and fell to his knees at her bedside and grabbed her hands that had been resting on her lap.

(Y/N) breathed heavily, as she tried to keep herself from crying anymore, as though if she could control her breathing it would stop her emotions. Tanjiro held her hands palm to palm, resting his thumbs over her knuckles. Their hands were so very calloused and scarred. A thin line of tears ran down from the corner of her eyes, and she leaned down to rest her forehead atop Tanjiro’s head, as the tears continued to run down her face. Tanjiro’s hands were cold right now, but there was still the ever present warmth that surrounded him. (Y/N) moved her hands out of his, so that she could intertwine her fingers with his, and nestled her face more towards his forehead, right beside the large red scar on the left side.

They remained like that for an indeterminate amount of time. It could have been as brief as five minutes, but it felt more as though it had been hours. Tanjiro had wanted to say something, to ask questions of what had happened to make her cry, or wanting to offer comforting words. Yet, he held his tongue and just waited as (Y/N)’s tears lessened and her breathing stilled, and she pulled her head away from his own and he could look up at her.

“So-sorry,” she whimpered.

Tanjiro shook his head, keeping his red eyes focused on her intensely. “You don’t have to be sorry. You have nothing to be sorry about.”

She shook her head, “no, I do. I am weak and pathetic.”

“No, you’re not!” Tanjiro insisted, “you’re one of the strongest people I have ever met! You’re such a great swordsman and your breathing style is great.”

“You’re so sweet, Tanjiro,” she mumbled, so quietly as though she didn’t want him to hear her praise. But he had, and it caused his cheeks to turn red with a somewhat burning sensation. It was an amazing feeling to know that she thought of him so highly that he briefly forgot that she was upset. “I’m not strong enough, I’m not good enough. I wasn’t able to save anyone but myself. I shouldn’t be a demon slayer, I am not like you.”

She tried to pull her hands away from him, but he held on stubbornly and looked at her with a serious look. “What happened, (Y/N)?”

(Y/N) looked away in shame. She relaxed her hands and then tightened her fingers around his. She sighed, “I was assigned to act as backup to a mission that was going less than successful. The demon was powerful, it had been feasting on a temple of monks and any demon slayers who came into its territory. We were its prey the moment we climbed up that mountain. All the other demon slayers I went with were the same age as me or younger. Some of them I knew, others I had only met that night. It picked them off one at a time. It had gotten me too, he tried to slit my throat when I screamed, but I was saved by a friend. The demon killed him and I beheaded while it ripped him apart. I was the only one who survived. Twenty slayers, and I was the only one who survived. And only because Takami saved me and died in my place.” She tried to bury her face in her shoulder as her tears returned.

Tanjiro lifted himself off of his knees and onto his feet, but he did not release her hands, only tightening his grip. “You shouldn’t feel guilty that you survived, that you’re alive. There is no reason why you don’t deserve to live, (Y/N), you’re a good person. What happened was terrible but that isn’t your fault. It’s not fair that a demon killed all those people without remorse and you’re the one left feeling regretful. You shouldn’t have to be burdened with these thoughts, because you did nothing wrong.”

She shook her head again.

“I am very happy that you’re alive,” he announced, “I will make sure to pay my respects to Takami for saving you before I leave. He was a good demon slayer who made an impossible decision. He was a good friend.”

“He was,” she nodded. “And so are you Tanjiro.”

He felt his cheeks warm again at her praise, as it had earlier when she called him sweet. Though there was also a disheartening ache in his chest at the mention of them being friends. That was odd, they were friends, that shouldn’t make him upset. “And you’re a good friend, (Y/N). If you leave the corps, I will understand. I just think you should take more time before you make a decision as serious as leaving the corps until after you recover.”

“That makes sense,” she agreed. (Y/N) turned to him, there was still a sadness in her eyes but there was a small smile as well. “Thank you, Tanjiro. I’m not happy about why you’re here, but I am really happy that you were here. You always know how to cheer me up. Thank you so much.”

He blushed, abashedly, “you don’t have to thank me.”

“Would you mind staying for a while?” she asked.

Tanjiro looked down at their hands, which neither of them had ever bothered to let go of from their conversation, so long that he had almost forgotten that they were holding hands. Tanjiro hadn’t ever held a girl’s hand before, beside Nezuko, but that didn’t count. It was the same as holding (Y/N)’s hand.

“Of course.”

Free Write #4: Forbidden

"One more thing." Kan-E-Senna said. Rising from her chair, she picked up a single sheet of parchment. Gaius frowned, watching as the Elder Seedseer approached him. Her face was like stone, and the paper silently rustled as it was placed in front of the now ex-legatus.

"Sign this."

"And what I am signing?" Gaius countered.

"A restraining order. Filed on behalf of Riven DeGlass." Kan-E watched as Gaius's eyes widened in shock--his normally stoic mien cracking briefly.

"You are forbidden from any contact with her. You are forbidden from seeing her. Any matters that require her presence in your vicinity will be carried out by another member of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn on her behalf." The nightmarish memory of Mathye fighting to save Riven's life, the sheer brutality of learning up close and personal what the Garlean excision process was--watching her beloved brothers battle to calm the out-of-control Valefor down--the memories bubbled up in the Elder Seedseer's thoughts.

But what stuck in Kan-E's mind the most was the ghost-memory of the cutting. Had Riven's brothers shown up a minute later--Valefor would have been dead, and Riven with her. All on the orders of Gaius van Baelsar, who had wanted to 'fix' his granddaughter.

Riven, who had been trapped by Gaius in Garlean anti-magic irons and a shock collar to ensure good behavior before she had been taken to the excision labs.

Mathye--one of E-Sumi's prized students, despite their relationship-weeping every night over his adopted sister's prone body. Begging the gods to free Riven's mind from the hell it had been thrown into.

Riven's pain--and the reality that awaited Eorzea should the Garleans truly invade--bringing their tools that killed magic--it had been the impetus for Kan-E and her fellow city-state leaders to finally take their own stand. To begin reversing the decrees against Dominants. They still had a lot to make up for.

But offering one Dominant who had given and was still giving everything she could for the realm--despite it's treatment of her--peace of mind, security...that was something they could do. They could ensure that van Baelsar stayed far away from his accidental progeny. And they could promise to unleash hell if he didn't.

"Sign. Or else the previous agreement becomes null and void." Kan-E's voice was steel. "And just to make you aware, the alternative to this was putting you in irons and handing you over to her brothers. Mathye Bishop in particular is very keen on that happening."

Burning light of a new dawn

Waiting outside the office, Lyreis was against the wall, wondering what they would ask of her. After learning of the purpose of the Scions, she understood her power could help defeat an important threat, Primals, creatures summoned by beastribes in retaliation for how they were treated by humankind. Those Primals eated aether like it was nothing, menacing the world to collapse, and were so powerful they couldn’t be taken down by anyone. The Echo, or maybe the Benediction of Light as Master E-Sumi-Yan told her, could protect her from one of their assets : subjugation. Her mind would still be hers, rendering her capable of fighting the Primals. All those information were facts she knew right, without understanding how.

Inside the office, Minfilia was stumbling a bit. Thancred by her side, he looked at her, an air of worry on his face.

-What did you see, Minfilia ?

Papalymo was watching her reactions, while Yda was waiting close to the door, in case someone would come too close while their leader was using her own Echo. Urianger was waiting for her answer, interested in what she would have seen.

-It’s blurry… Chaotic, even. I saw her on a ship, and a tempest wreaking havoc. She nearly drowned but was saved by the Mother Crystal, and she awoke on the shore, near the Black Shroud. It seems I can’t go farther…

-It strange, there wasn’t anything about a shipwreck in this part of Eorzea…

Thancred stretched his back, walking around the desk to watch the door, where Lyreis left just a few minutes ago. Crossing his arms, he frowned.

-Maybe she wasn’t in Eorzea to begin with. It wouldn’t be new that many boats finished in a shipwreck while going to the East. Isn’t there some kind of cemetery along the way ? Anyway, we didn’t learn much about our new friend.

The lalafell put his hand close to his chin, thinking hard, while Yda just shrugged.

-That means we can trust her right ? If there’s nothing wrong in that vision.

-You’re right, Yda. I think we can trust Lyreis. I didn’t feel anything bad, only the warmth of Hydaelyn. If she was chosen, we don’t have to question that choice.

The smile Minfilia made was the final point of this discussion, and Urianger walked to the door, but before leaving he said :

-There is nothing wrong in learning more about our allies, no matter how we get this information. You shouldn’t feel any guilt, Minfilia.

Surprised at first, she scoffed at him while he left without another word. He saw right through her, as usual. The other smiled, shrugged playfully, and left too, leaving only Thancred and her in the office.

-So, is it safe to go seek out the Amal’jaa with her ?

-I think so. She will prove helpful if you have to fight Ifrit. But watch over her. She feels… I won’t say too trusting but…

-She’d follow anyone who’d ask and fall into a trap, that’s what you mean.

-It pains me to judge her like this… Thancred, I don’t know what the Mother Crystal did to her, but it felt wrong. She’s but a blank page. Did something happened that forced Her to-

-Don’t question it, yet. You told us to believe in Hydaelyn’s choice, right ? Her reasons aren’t ours to judge. If things get sour, then we could always blame Her for hiding important information, but until then…

Minfilia nodded slowly. He was right, but she wondered if Lyreis hadn’t just been created by the Mother Crystal herself. Was she nothing but an avatar of the planet? She looked at Thancred, who bore a confident smile, and left it at it, asking him to go join Lyreis for their new mission. He nodded and said goodbye, leaving the office behind. Once the door closed, Minfilia turned to the framed broken staff behind her.

-Master Louisoix, I hope this will turn out for the best…

Outside, Lyreis watched as every member of the Scions got by, sparing a few words with her. She didn’t answer much but nodded each time. Then Thancred came to her, all smiles, and stopped a bit too close.

-Well, my lady, it seems we’ll be working together much sooner than I expected ! But, before we do, may I ask that we.. never speak about our first meeting again?

-...You mean in the Quicksand. If it’s what you want, then.

-Let’s say it wasn’t my best introduction. Anyway !

He stepped back a bit, stretching his hand to her.

-It’s nice to meet you, Lyreis. I hope we will do a great job together.

-It’s.. nice meeting you.

She took his hand and shook it wondering what this man was doing. Was it a game maybe? She didn’t know, but shrugged it off quickly.

-Then, let me explain what we’ll be doing. Signs of Amal’jaa’s activity have been sighted near Camp Drybones, with the possibility of summoning their Primal, Ifrit. We’ll be investigating the area, asking around about anything strange or new happening. Do you think you’ll be ok?

-Asking questions. Getting information. I can do that. I suppose there’ll be fighting too.

-That, we’ll see once we’re there. And if there’s signs of summoning. Since night is coming soon, you should stay here to rest. I’ll go first to Drybone and check out how it’s going on there. It’ll be easier to blend in and make a plan.

Lyreis didn’t question the ways of the rogue, as it seems he knew what he was doing. She waved slightly when he left, and turned to what seemed to be the main room. She was stopped by Y’shtola, who made a small sign to her and she walked to her.

-A word, before you join him. Or maybe a warning.

-I’ll go tomorrow, it seems. But I’m listening.

-Thancred is known to be a great charmer, as his job is to collect information, by any means available. Don’t fall for his honeyed words and you should be alright. He is a good fighter and reliable in lots of ways, but I thought you should at least know that and don’t fall for his little tricks.

-I don’t understand your point, to be honest.

The miqo’te scoffed at her, then crossed her arms. Was it overconfidence their new ally showed?

-I suppose you’ll be alright then. Better safe than sorry though.

-Should I thank you..?

Taken aback by her innocent question, Y’shtola blinked once, twice, then looked at Lyreis again. Yes, the hyur wasn’t being sarcastic, but genuine.

-Well.. It would depend if you’d think my advice to be helpful or not. Being thankful depends on how you feel about what is said to you.

-I see. Then I thank you for your warning. But I’m not sure it was needed, I don’t find his words “honeyed”.

Lyreis made the movements with her hands while speaking, making Y’shtola smile playfully. Innocent. That was the right word to describe her. It could be interesting to make that woman grow within the Scions, to teach her about the world and life…

-Well then, if you have to leave tomorrow, you can spare a few minutes of your time with us, right? I’d love to learn a bit more about you, and you can be introduced to the other Scions.

-As you wish.

The morning after, Lyreis walked to the entrance of the shelter, ready to go join Thancred. Tataru was startled when she walked by, watching her leave in disbelief as she just didn’t care about her surroundings. Starting from Vespers Bay, Lyreis walked her way to Camp Drybone, where she went once when looking around. She remembered there was a cemetery there and a little chapel, but that was pretty much all. Also that it was always heavy raining, making the name of the place a bit strange. Walking down the path, she saw Thancred already there, talking to some people around, already starting his investigation. She walked to the Aetheryte in the middle of the camp. Last time she did not harmonise with it, but she remembered how Miounne told her to always do it in a new place. Stretching her hand, she let her aether flow for a moment, then dropped her arm and looked around. There were a lot of poor looking men, seeking work or being desperate and refusing to speak with newcomers. Thancred left the man he was talking to and came to her, waving slightly.

-You’re finally here. I was scared you’d lost your way to the Camp.

-I came here, once. I remembered the road.

-Alright. Then let me tell you what I learned then.

Explaining the situation, Lyreis learned about people disappearing lately. Only a few at a time, but all poor unemployed refugees that no one would seek out. Trying to get some more information, they got into the small tavern and found themselves in front of the merchant she fought yesterday in Ul’dah. How small was Thanalan for them to find Ungust?

And of course, she had to get into a trap. Thancred felt awful he didn’t follow her at that time, and had now to run to get the militia to act quickly. Seeing that she didn’t get back from the Golden Bazaar, he should have acted sooner, but thinking she could handle it easily he didn’t seek out. Now he was blaming himself for his shortseeing. But before being able to reach her, he had to get inside the Amalj’aa camp. Luckily for him, the security was low, and with the help of the Immortals, they could cut in, just in time to see Lyreis having taken down Ifrit. Thancred caught a glimpse of a crystal, fiery red, before acting quickly to protect the hyur from an Amalj’aa with a swift attack.

-Are you ok ? I’m sorry I shouldn’t have left you alone !

-I’m alright. But others weren’t so lucky.

-Maybe not everyone has been subjugated… At least we can question those two.

The Immortals had freed some of the prisoners, and within them were Ungust, the merchant, and a traitor within the Flames.

-I’m really sorry, I didn’t think your first mission would be so difficult.

-It doesn’t matter, really.

-Maybe for you but- well, we’ll have to talk about this later, we better get out of here before more comes here ! This way !

He started running, Lyreis on his tracks, to get out of the camp. They went back to Drybone, where Lyreis gave a quick report of what happened, without much details since she herself had been knocked down at one point. Thancred told her to keep some part for the Scions anyway. Once it was done, they both took the road to return to the Waking Sands, where Minfilia would hear about the situation.

-Is there something wrong, Thancred ?

-Ah.. Sorry I’m not in the right mood to hold a conversation right now.

-You are troubled, why ?

-It’s not much, really… I mean, I should have been by your side. It was your first mission and I let you down, you had to fight alone.

-You would have been a hindrance.

-You have your way with words, it’s incredible, ahah…

-I mean it. You’re not protected from subjugation, right ? I couldn’t help the prisoners, what would have I been able to do about you ? Fighting an ally and a Primal would have been harder. Hence why I said “hindrance”.

Lyreis explained factly the situation, and even though she was right, it didn’t feel like it for Thancred. He knew that he would blame himself even before Minfilia about the whole fiasco. His inability to help here, even if he wasn’t responsible for not having the Echo, would weigh on him.

The Great Revampening!

Hi, it’s been a minute since a huge major big post regarding my characters. I want to start this off by saying that most fics are gonna remain unchanged because a lot of these revamps are not things that will require much in the way of retconning! There will be minor tweaks to And Love You Shall Find and MAYBE to Alea Iacta Est. Everything else will remain the same.

The big two things are that Kaida and Lillian are being reworked slightly. Unfortunately when I upgraded my PC, some things were lost and certain files got corrupted. I had to rebuild Kaida and Lillian’s looks from scratch and due to certain things, some changes were made to their appearances. And then I realized... I kind of like those changes.

I also am in process of making a new probably secondary OC but I’ll post about that later when her design is finished. I think much like Ifra and Y’aana, she may not necessarily have full fics dedicated to her but she’ll be a character that shows up in fics. But that’ll go in a later post, time to talk about Kaida and Lillian!

Appearance Changes

Kaida has a new set of scales. Lillian has been given wavy hair and freckles. Both have new hairstyles for 6.3 onward.

Additionally, Kaida’s appearance in previous expansions will be getting slightly revised moving forward (mostly hairstyle changes and I’m going to come up with official “looks” for her for each expansion).

Further changes are under the cut because long.

Backstory Changes

The only characters receiving backstory changes at this time are Kaida and her Unsundered form, Euphrosyne. I’ve been doing a lot of deep diving into Kaida’s character lately and I’m ready to reveal these new changes.

Euphrosyne (Euphie)

Formerly, Euphie was adopted into Hades’s family. However, I’ve decided to switch the scenario so that Hades was adopted into Euphie’s family. Euphrosyne also had two sisters (Aglaia and, tentatively, Thalia).

Kaida Asagiri

I have bumped back the time that Kaida was exiled from the Ruby Sea. Rather than being exiled at age 16, she was exiled at age 19. I chose to do this to give more time to explore her life in the Ruby Sea prior to her adventures as a Warrior of Light.

Kaida had a pet syldra during her time in the Ruby Sea. These were not uncommon for richer clans to own. The pet syldra was named Gin. After her exile, Kousuke and Aika-- Kaida’s siblings-- took care of Gin.

While Kaida lived in the Ruby Sea, she had a long-distance relationship with Yugiri. This relationship was kept mostly secret as Kaida knew that her parents would not approve of her dating someone outside the village. At the time, Ao-no-Sato and Sui-no-Sato were still repairing their relationship after generations of political conflict.

Yugiri was Kaida’s first kiss.

Kaida’s curiosity of the outside world was influenced by Yugiri’s stories, especially the tale of her encounter with a young boy name Shun.

Yugiri broke things off with Kaida when she departed the Ruby Sea to become a shinobi in Doma. Yugiri explained to Kaida that she was doing this because she could not see a future in which the Garleans did not invade the Ruby Sea. Although Yugiri tried to convince Kaida to come with her, Kaida felt, at the time, Yugiri was too obsessed with this paranoia of the Garleans invading (a paranoia Kaida was too familiar with as it had caused her village to become even more reclusive than normal-- something she did not like). Kaida refused and lost contact with Yugiri soon after, which broke her heart.

Rather than being part of a free company prior to the Calamity, Kaida worked in Gridania as part of the Conjurer’s Guild. She trained under E-Sumi-Yan, who took an interest in her geomancy. Because Kaida’s form of geomancy had more to do with water than the earth (given that she learned everything in an underwater village), she was tasked frequently with seeing to aetherial imbalances in the Shroud’s waters. She helped tend to the wounded during the Calamity and afterwards, she was recruited by the Order of the Twin Adders. She attained the rank of Serpeant Sergeant Third Class and mostly did Grand Company work for spare gil to cover living expenses.

During the events of rescuing Minfilia, Tataru, Urianger, etc from Castrum Centri in ARR, Kaida was captured by the XIVth Legion’s Livia sas Junius. This is going to be a fic so please look forward to it, I guess.

When Kaida and Yugiri reunited in 2.2, they tried to make things work out. However, they quickly discovered that they had simply become different people and after a month of trying, they decided to split things off permanently. They remain friends, however.

During the events of the Naadam in Stormblood, Kaida did not fight for the Mol. Instead, she fought for the Malaguld-- the tribe that her father hailed from. Kaida met some of her extended family during this time including her grandfather Sükhbaatar, the khan of the tribe and an experienced warrior, and her cousin, Erhi. Upon winning the Naadam, she gave her title of khagan to her grandfather as she felt it was not her place to hold that title.

Character Changes

Kaida’s Echo is now slightly altered. Rather than simply seeing the past through another’s eyes, Kaida experiences them in a more vivid and emotional way. The emotions sometimes cloud her mind post-vision to the point where she can fall into a state of delirium. The delirium is born from a blend of lingering emotions from the vision (usually the emotions of another) and her own feelings, giving her a cooldown period where she’s more emotionally volatile.

Not entirely a change but more or less something I’ve been developing over time. Kaida is pretty anti-piracy, specifically due to a bad past with the Confederacy, who has long harassed people from her village. Because of this, certain scenes in Stormblood are a bit different, with Kaida likely being forbidden from dealing with Rasho due to her immense hatred towards him. I will probably write about these scenes later. Kaida also has a civil but colder relationship with Merlwyb and does not particularly find Limsa to be a comfortable place. Characters such as Sicard, who lean into piracy a tad too comfortable, make Kaida wary and she is not comfortable around them. There is a bit more to this but I will also save that for fics.

I think that about covers the major changes! I plan to replay Stormblood when Trust support is added because I don’t think I’ve ever gotten to play through it as Kaida before! So when that happens, I foresee many more headcanon posts.

I will be revising banners and profiles gradually over the next week!

Chapter 9: The Lotus Stand (Hard) Characters: Keith Summers, Hayzel Baker, Y'mhitra Rhul, Shadowhunter, Raya-O Senna, A-Ruhn Senna, some wood-wailers, Elementals Rating: Teen Notes: Non-descript dead bodies - Previous - First - Next -

Things had been quiet after Keith explained his vision. Shadowhunter had gone silent, seeming revolted by what the Echo-blessed Midlander had told him. Y’mhitra seemed to reflect on the situation, leaving the Padjal siblings to eat on the bench, staring between them all. Rubbing the back of his head, Keith cleared his throat awkwardly until the Seeker among them broke the silence. “This might be a mixed blessing. From what I’ve heard from the scions, Emet-Selch was among the more powerful of our masked friends…and was felled by the Warriors of Light. Your friend…er, the Ascian’s utility has passed. Without the greater power to guide them, what might they be hoping to gain? Surely their leader’s demise, not to mention their god’s, would have demotivated them. And what of their hostage? Does your brother possess the Echo?”

“Chaos…,” Shadowhunter grunted.

“I didn’t sense anything like that until Keith fell. Afterward, I was able to pinpoint him,” Raya-O mused.

“I didn’t notice anything either, and I’m sure Y-Sumi or Kan-E would have said something if they sensed anything more,” her brother added before joining in with the others as they looked to Keith.

“Ah. My little brother’s only claim to fame is being kind of broody and wielding a big sword. It doesn’t sound like Asicans have want of money and my family, while in good standing with the Sultanate, don’t have any power to sway over them…and Carter is the third brother in a line of four, hardly the one to kidnap for any imagined leverage at all really.”

“Almost as useless as the second them,” Shadowhunter sighed.

“Exactly,” Keith agreed before tilting his head. “Wait a minute…”

“The blind leading the blind then,” Y’mhitra sighed, “At the very least…we’ve established they’re probably not going to try and end the world…and that Carter is a disposable hostage,” Y’mhitra sighed.

“Disposable!?” Keith yelped.

“Unless you feel that we’ve missed something, there’s no clear reason to keep Carter except leverage against pursuers.”

Keith lowered his head, heart racing as he let her words sink in. Clenching his fists, he shook out his head, not wanting to believe that the Ascian would harm him. Looking up, he watched the grey skies through the yellow leaves of the Shroud. “Guess we’re getting fall early this year,” he let out weakly.

“Fall? It’s spring,” Raya-O answered before looking up, “Oh no. A-Ruhn! Look up!”

The other white mage turned his attention up as well. “That’s not good...,” he started before reaching up to rub at one of his horns, “The elementals…their scared.”

Raya-O nodded while the other three looked at them confused. Standing, she looked to the sky, following the yellowing pattern. “This isn’t right. It’s worse towards Old Gridania…come, let’s go see if it’s related.”

Following the older Padjal’s lead, the five of them wandered into the older part of the city, the canopy looking more and faded as they got closer to the conjurer’s guild. As they approached Nophica’s Alter, Raya-O gasped. The area seemed to have been cleared save for a trio of wood wailers anxiously looking about.

“What are those,” Keith asked, approaching the alter itself, finding a couple of, what looked to him, like little glowing rag dolls. Reaching down, he picked one up and held it in its arms. The creature weakly wiggled its arms before going limp. “Ah, is it okay!?”

“An elemental…It’s not dead…but weakened for sure,” A-Ruhn observed while kneeling down to check the others, “That’s probably why the leaves are turning.”

Raya-O shifted then moved towards the clearing that led down toward The Lotus Stand. “Something…is down there.”

“Asican,” Shadowhunter growled before pushing past her.

“Wait! You can’t just go down there,” the girl huffed, chasing after.

Y’mhitra and A-Ruhn followed along with the three guards, leaving Keith to put the elemental gently down, giving its head a little pat before spacing out the others so that they weren’t all uncomfortably strewn on top of one another. Standing, he looked back to the stand as he heard Shadowhunter scream. Hurrying, he went to the path then ran down as fast as he could to the springs.

Standing near the small falls, Hayzel stood quietly, hand outstretched toward them while Shadowhunter crawled away through the waters, grasping for something Keith could not see.

“Cid…Mili…Allie…Alfonse…Rex…Ricon….please wake up. I can not have failed again…,” Shadowhunter weakly breathed out. Keith swallowed then looked to find Y’mhitra trembling and backing up shaking her head before starting to cry, “Shtola…Zel…who…who did this…”

The three wood wailers also seemed to be muttering something, spears dropped, and attention spread. Looking to Raya-O and A-Ruhn, he frowned, the two holding hands and keeping their eyes closed while everyone else seemed to be seeing something he could not. Turning his attention back to the Ascian, he quickly hopped over the logs and onto the table at the center of the meeting area. “Hayzel. Please! Where’s Carter!? Why are you doing this,” he asked.

Hayzel’s attention snapped up to Keith, and in that moment his hand faltered. “Keith…” he whispered before shaking his head and gesturing upwards, “Just let us leave this forest in peace.”

“Not with my brother! Were you faking your friendship with us this whole time!? Carter really liked you…You don’t need to do this!”

“If I don’t I will be hunted and struck down like the rest. You know nothing of what I’ve been through…I want only to remain awake and to be with the one I love!”

Keith shielded himself as a dark aura flung from his friend’s hand toward him. His eyes itched for a moment, and when he opened them, his blood ran cold. Laying in the water where the bodies of his two other brothers…the youngest Qody with his blitzball…and his eldest Casumus in his favorite jeweled coat. Shaking, Keith fell to his knees on the wooden table, trying to catch his breath.

Punching the wood, he looked up, tear in the corner of his eyes as he looked on to Hayzel. He panted then stood back up. “So this is what the guy meant about nightmares…but, you left out Carter on purpose didn’t you? Stop this Hayzel!”

The Ascian seemed to be stepping away before shaking his head and clutching it with a scream. Everyone soon came out of their trances, seeing things as they were as Hayzel cried out in terror. The wind soon shifted, and thunder started to roll. Shadowhunter getting back to his feet drew his blade, readying to aim it before Keith body-checked him back into the springs.

“You fool,” the elder grunted, pushing Keith off him as he got back to his feet.

Lightning spread above the canopy before thunder rolled through. The ground shook and in another flash a suit of armor crashed down from above then assembled before letting out a deep sinister laugh from the wolf-shaped helm. “Sirus…” Shadowhunter grunted, yanking Keith back to his feet and thrusting a spare sword into his hands.

“It’s just another illusion…right,” Keith asked, the others behind him readying themselves for battle, “Right?”

The armor stepped forward then manifested a war hammer and swung. Metal against metal echoed sharply through the arena as both Shadowhunter and Keith held their swords up flat to block it while the Padjals casted a watery shield around them. From behind Y’mhitra cast out a carbuncle that began to fire magics the apparition’s way while the wood wailers slung their spears and arrows their way. Keith was quick to squat, heart racing before he bounced upward, shoving himself into the flat end of the hammer to try and make the giant recoil. Freed of the parry, Gaius tried to break through to swipe at the Ascian beyond, only to be blocked as Sirus rotated to face Hayzel.”

“It’s turning on its summoner,” Y’mhitra called out, spouting magicks out from her book.

Keith slid through the stream then popped up in front of Hayzel then thrust his sword into the stomach of the armor before trying to uppercut with the blade and knock of the helm. Sirus faltered taking a couple of steps back before finding itself berated by stones by both A-Ruhn and Raya-O until it fell backward, sprawled out nearly the length of the stand. Taking a leap, Keith jumped back beside the Asican.

“We did it,” Keith breathed out, eyes wide before turning to Hayzel as the Ascian cried out then faded into an abyss of darkness.

“Move now boy,” Shadowhunter demanded, dashing forward to pull Keith against him as a red sword thrust out of the portal and struck him.

Retreating back with the rest of the group, Keith watched as a horned figure emerged from the darkness. Straightening up, the handsome figure looked down at them, eyes white and sword held high before it struck down into the center of the armor. “A voidsent,” Raya-O cried out.

“Doesn’t he look a bit like…” Y’mhitra started, looking to Keith.

“It’s in our way! Just strike it down,” Shadowhunter shouted before firing a round from Heirsbane as he launched forward to deliver the creature a series of blue-flamed strikes before being knocked away with a parry.

Keith swallowed, staring up at the larger image of himself before he chucked the sword away then pulled out a pair of studded gloves from his pockets. Fitting them, he squared off then flew forward, feeling Y’mhitra’s castings wiz by him before he landed a fury of strikes into his dark mirror’s stomach.

The creature merely grunted then swung its sword about, trying to sway Keith away before grabbing him by the throat and throwing him back. Holding his sword with both hands, the incubus closed its eyes then summoned eight swirling six-pointed stars around each party member before exploding dark aether about them. Keith hissed as it burned but was soothed as both siblings cast various healing magicks that made his foil recoil.

Swooping back from of them, the incubus swung his sword high. Keith looked down, noting a dark circle coming from below. He leapt forward as a dark sword came forth from the ground, followed by a flurry of blades that seemed to come from all directions. Flipping forward, he did his best to dodge each one before looking up as a giant blackened blade barreled down at him before a silvery dome appeared around him and caused the sword to vanish before it could collide in full.

“Strike him down while he cools off from the attack,” Y’mhitra called out.

Keith nodded then closed his eyes then channeled his aether in his palm. It flooded like he’d never felt before, glowing brilliantly as he took his stance. “Go back to where you belong,” Keith called out before launching forward, striking the incubus hard before finding himself engulfed in light.

He was blinded for a moment, but he could feel his target’s aether slip away. Once things came into focus, he looked back to his new friends and Shadowhunter before giving a little thumbs up as he crashed down into springs face first.
