Roy Kent*Bus Buddy
Pairing: Roy x reader
Word count: 2511
Tumblr media
Warnings: pure fluff, Jamie flirting with reader, protective Roy, swearing
Masterlist here
at the same time that Ted got hired Rebecca had also decided she needed an assistant to enact her perfect revenge, so the boys often saw you walking around Richmond or at press interviews. Any time you entered the locker room wolf whistles from Jamie rang across the room followed by a loud ‘shut it’ from Roy. Usually, you’d object to Jamies actions, but the routine had become so common you found it funny especially when Roy dogged him into Keeley one time, and you saw him drag Jamie by the ear.
You weren’t sure why the tough and silent Roy Kent was so protective of you, but you were grateful to know walking into a locker room filled with men that he had your back. the longer you were around the team though you realised none of the boys would even hurt a fly.
still locker rooms or crowded hotel lobbies could get rowdy, and Roy almost acted as security, weaving you through the crowd and telling everyone to fuck off. any thanks you gave him were met with grunts, nods, or two-word answers.
sometimes you had to talk to Roy though, but you never complained. whenever you had forms for him to sign or events you wanted him to attend, sadly only on a work basis, he gladly complied without fuss. feeling his hand brush, yours as he took the pen from your hand or getting to secretly glance at his face as he filled out the forms was enough to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
you’d convinced yourself your crush was harmless. after all he was Roy Kent, an absolutely loaded footballer with an exterior tougher than diamond. its not like you flirted with him or stared at him. well not on purpose at least.
this weekend saw Richmond visiting another stadium a six-hour drive away for their next match. usually, you travelled with Rebecca but due to some other things she had to get done this weekend, aka a spa trip with Keeley you were secretly so jealous about, she had decided to send you as a representative. however, this also meant you got to arrive at Richmond Friday afternoon with a packed bag and a bunch of rowdy footballers.
“Well look who our newest bus buddy is,” Ted said, putting his hands on his hips as you approached the gaggle of men. “Hope you don’t mind being down graded to ride with us bunch of savages,” he joked as he ticked your name off his clipboard. you really did appreciate Teds soccer mom vibes.
You laughed as you dragged your suitcase up to stand by Ted at the bus, “Please how bad can it be? it’s just a bus,”
“Yeah, but with these twats,” Roy’s voice made Ted jump, but you just turned and smiled, ready to say hi, but Roy just walked past you. He picked up his suitcase, tossing it under the bus before turning back and picking yours up and placing yours in with far more care than he had with his own. When you said thanks, Roy just nodded before heading onto the bus, assumably to secure the most isolated spot he could.
Ted let out a low whistle as Roy walked off, “He’s a charmer alright,” he said, his eyes scurrying around before leaning down to whisper to you, “If I didn’t know any better I’d think he’s sweet on you,” You laughed but before you could even try to deny it Ted was pointing at your face, “and if I’m not blind you my friend are blushing,”
“Shut up Ted,” was all you managed to say before Nate walked over and thankfully Ted knew better than to keep going in front of him.
while you were talking to Nate and Ted the bus all the players had arrived and assembled on the bus. you were the last to climb on the bus since even though you knew it couldn’t be that bad six hours on a bus was still a dire experience. “Oi need a seat love?” Jamie hollered from the back of the bus, already tossing his bag to his feet.
“There’s a seat by me,” Dani pipped up from a few rows in front of Jamie.
you laughed, trying to think who would be the least awkward seat mate. however, as you went to move forward, figuring Dani would be less out right flirty than Jamie you were stopped by Roy standing up from his seat and stepping into the aisle.
when you looked up at him, expecting him to say something, he just looked down at the window seat he had just given up. you smiled as you moved to sit down, “Thanks,” you said squeezing past him, “Thanks boys but I prefer the front of the bus,” you said before settling down for the ride.
Roy dropped into the aisle seat and while you knew he was trying to keep in his seat the bus seats were only so big, so your thighs were bumping into each other, “Thanks for saving me,” you whispered to him.
Roy chuckled under his breath, “Really think I’d let you get tortured back there like that?” he whispered back making his voice sound even sexier if possible. the bus set off only a few minutes later and now you were trapped in a bus with 25 rowdy men who instantly started talking amongst themselves and playing bus games. “Bet you wish you’d never got on this bus,” Roy said in a low voice but with all the noise at least you didn’t have to whisper.
“Nah I don’t mind, honest,” you said, settling into your seat, “Sitting in a silent plane with Rebecca can get awkward,”
“Sorry I’ve not got any champagne for ya,” Roy joked and for the rest of the ride you actually talked the whole way which is the longest you’ve ever spoke to him for. you were almost sad when the bus pulled up outside the hotel.
without a word Roy had grabbed your suitcase and his, walking into the hotel still wrapped up in a debate about which ice cream flavour was superior. “Checking in together?” The receptionist asked making you blush, and Roy clear his throat.
“Eh no, separate,” he said, glancing down at you but you wish he hadn’t since you knew your cheeks were flaming hot as you gave the woman your information. however, after getting checked in Roy still carried your cases, taking them up to your room with you in silence. He sat the bag down in front of your room for you as you unlocked the door, “I’m just down the hall. 203. so eh if anyone gives you bother or these twats are too loud tonight give me a knock,”
“Will do captain,” you said, trying your best to stay composed as you got into your room, shutting the door behind you so you could freak out.
the next day was too hectic to even think about flirting with Roy or even catching a glimpse of him off the field. however, Richmond had managed to secure a tie which for them right now was a big win. however, what was not a big win was the fact that you had to get back in the coach that day since the team had a bunch of press to do tomorrow at Richmond.
between the game, the press interviews, everyone showering and getting into clean clothes, and checking out you weren’t even set to leave till 10pm despite the game kicking off at 1:30pm. you were already yawning as you came down the lift to the reception.
most of the boys were also absolutely shattered. running for 90 minutes straight at full speed was tiring enough without also having to pack and do press. you had got to sit during the game, but you also had the job of Rebecca all day so now you really understood why she needed that spa weekend. “Bus said it’ll be pulling up in five minutes,” you yawned as you sat your bag down, “Head count time,” you said.
you felt like a primary teacher, but you didn’t care as you walked around, counting each player as you put your hand on their head. they were all too tired to complain and even Issac let you touch his hair. “twenty three,” you said, counting Dani before stopping, “Wow your hair is soft,” you gasped before continuing as Dani beamed from his seat, “Twenty four,” you said, reaching up to pat Roy’s head but you were too tired to see the way he smiled at you when you did, “Twenty five,” you finished, putting your hand on your own head making Roy chuckle quietly. “We didn’t lose anyone, great job team. now shift it, I wanna sleep,”
“You heard her twats, get moving,” Roy said, his loud voice shocking everyone including the hotel staff. at least it got the boys moving though. Roy cleared his throat as he glanced down at you, “Need a seat buddy again?” he asked as you filed out behind all the boys.
you smiled up at him, “Yeah that’d be nice. Its your turn for the window seat,”
“I don’t mind, you keep it,” he said as you finally got to the bus. the boys were all tossing their cases in and filing into the bus with very few mumblings between them. you were silently thankful everyone was exhausted, “Just don’t fall asleep standing,” Roy’s joke snapped you back to reality as he loaded in your cases.
“Fine but I make no promises about the bus,” you said as you walked to get on, Roy offering for you to go first. a sweet gesture to you and silently Roy was grateful for the chance to check out your ass. “This seat, okay?” you said, plopping down into the first available seat. Roy didn’t even reply as he sat down next to you.
Ted was the last to get on and while you usually loved his speeches today you just did not care. “Now all yall try get some shut eye. Six hours of sleep would do you all the world of good right now,”
“Yes coach,” rang out in a sleepy chorus as everyone settled in to nap on the bus for the night.
as you looked around you saw Jamie in the seat across from you with a blanket already pulled over him and Dani a seat behind you with an eye mask on, “I am clearly not prepared,” you joked quietly to Roy.
Roy looked over, seeing his fellow teammates who were used to these late-night busses, “You can borrow my jacket if you get cold,” Roy said quietly making you inwardly melt, “Not much of a blanket but it’s warm,”
“I’ll think about it,” you yawned, making Roy smile as he saw how you stretched away your sleep. or well tried to. the ride set off and you could already hear soft snores across the bus. any of the boys who couldn’t sleep had headphones in and you had never been more grateful.
you sat in silence, looking out the window as the head lights of other cars went past and let yourself sink further into your seat. you barely noticed when Roy shrugged his jacket off or realise how close to him you were getting but you could feel your eyelids growing heavier with each passing moment.
Roy however had noticed the soft snores coming from you when your eyes had finally closed, unable to fight sleep off anymore. he was thankful everyone was asleep or not paying attention as he got to look down at you sleeping on his shoulder with a soft smile. after a few minutes, sure you were asleep, he gently pulled his jacket over you like a blanket.
he wasn’t sure when he had fell for you or why, but he’d known for weeks now that he liked you. hell, more than liked. there was just something about you and right now you looked downright adorable as you nuzzled further into him. Roy slipped his arm behind your back, allowing you to properly sleep on him and his hand to rest on your waist.
usually, Roy was far too tense or pent up in rides home to sleep on the bus, especially with a team he just knew were desperate to draw something on his face, but Roy was surprised when he opened his eyes and sunlight blinded him.
the bus was pulling up to Richmond at an ungodly 4 am when Roy realised, he had fallen asleep, his head resting on top of yours. without thinking, still in a sleepy state, Roy pressed a kiss to the top of your head as he moved to sit up. however, when he saw you stir awake, he kicked himself internally, “Are we here?” you yawned, pulling away from him and Roy already missed the feeling of you curled up to him.
“Looks like it,” Roy said as you looked down to realise it had been Roy’s jacket covering you, “You uh looked cold,” Roy said, clearing his throat and thankful he had a beard to cover the way his cheeks grew hot.
“Thanks,” you said, a sleepy smile playing your lips as the rest of the team started to wake. “Did you manage to sleep?”
“A bit yeah,” Roy said, and it was as you shuffle forward Roy realised his mistake when you looked down at his arm, “Sorry bout that,” he mumbled, quickly pulling his arm out from where it had been wrapped around your waist.
“It’s alright I don’t mind,” you said, a smile toying your lips as you stretched to try wake up.
without anything else said, really by anyone, you all filtered off the bus and Roy went to get both your suitcases. Roy cleared his throat as he went to pass yours to you, a nervous habit you’d only just really noticed, “Do you need a lift up the road? my cars just over there,”
“If you don’t mind that’d be great,” you said, so relieved you weren’t going to have to sleep in Rebeccas office, “Don’t hate me if I fall asleep in the car though,”
“Couldn’t hate you if I tried,” Roy said as he took the suitcase back and began to walk to his car. you blushed as you followed behind him, climbing into the passenger side as Roy loaded the bags in, “You all set?” Roy asked as he hopped into the driver’s seat.
when Roy glanced over, he couldn’t help but laugh when he noticed you were already asleep in the car. Roy reached over, buckling you in before getting ready to hit the road. he’d dropped you off a few times from work so he knew the way already, but Roy couldn’t stop himself stealing so many glances at the sight of you. there was no avoiding his feelings now.  Roy Kent was in love.

Nobody in the owner's box spoke. Jamie was lying on the pitch, arms crossed over his eyes in pain. You could hear Man City fans hollering insults at him in the distance, but all of their noise was drowned out by the thumping of your heart. You forgot how to breathe.
You felt Keeley squeeze your hand, bringing you back to the present. You watched the physios help him off the field. The game continued but you were no longer interested. Instead, you found yourself staring at the boy sitting on the sidelines as he talked to Ted.
"Come on, Jamie," you whispered, biting your thumb anxiously. "You got this, baby."
With a pat on the back, Jamie re-entered the game. You cheered along with Keeley and Rebecca, tears pooling your eyes. You were so proud of him.
The taunts from Man City fans got louder as he walked toward his teammates. Jamie, looked around, rolled his eyes, and stuck his tongue out as he banged on his chest where the AFC Richmond logo was stitched on his kit. You laughed, wiping your eyes, enjoying how confident and full of life your boyfriend seemed to be even after getting injured.
You watched as he masterfully dribbled the ball, dodging three Man City players, before he got in position to kick the ball. The loud whoosh of the football rang throughout the entire arena and before you knew it, all AFC Richmond fans were on their feet cheering for the native Mancunian.
Jamie looked up at the owner's box where he knew you'd be and blew a kiss in your direction. Although you knew he couldn't see you, you blew him a kiss right back. As he was exiting the pitch, he was met with thunderous applause from supporters of his old team.
"That's how good he is," you heard Higgins say from behind you. "Jamie Tartt is a legend."
Your smile widened as you nodded in agreement. The camera crew focused on Jamie's expression as he allowed himself to marvel at the crowd's praise. He no longer had the cocky smile on his face, but rather, his face was relaxed and full of gratitude. This was a homecoming that he deserved.
When the full time was called, the team celebrated on the pitch. Jamie stayed for a bit, but excused himself to come find you. You were waiting for him in front of the locker room entrance, unable to contain your excitement when you saw him.
Briefly forgetting his injury, you ran to him, engulfing him in a hug that made him lose his balance. You peppered kisses all over his face, "I am so proud of you, Jamie Tartt. God, I love you so much."
He tried to laugh to mask the hiss of pain he let out when he put too much pressure on his ankle. You pulled away quickly, suddenly feeling horrible for nearly attacking him. You stepped away from him, "I completely forgot. I'm so sorry, love."
"No," he whined, immediately reaching out for you again. You reluctantly obliged and approached him, much calmer this time around. Jamie sighed in content, leaving light kisses on your neck, "Much better. Don't go too far."
"Jamie, you're hurt," you tutted, threading your fingers through his hair. He hummed in approval, still refusing to let go of you. You placed a kiss on his cheek, forcing him to separate from you to capture your lips in a kiss. You pulled away, "Let's get you to the physios, yeah? Make sure you're all good to go?"
Jamie knew you were right. He did need to get a thorough check-up. He nodded, intertwining his fingers with yours, "Let's go?"
You squeezed his hand gently, letting him lead you away.
Thankfully, Jamie was okay for the most part. The physio told him that he needed to take it easy at least until the next match, but he should be able to participate in light training after two days. Roy grunted in disapproval after hearing the news, but you could tell that he was relieved that Jamie wasn't hurt any more than he was.
The bus ride back to Richmond was rowdy. The boys were absolutely wild over their win-- as they should be, but it also meant that Jamie refused to rest the entire time. You were glad, however, that he remained seated the entire time and didn't put too much pressure on his hurt ankle.
It was nice to be around the boys again. You didn't realize how much of a community, a family, you created in Richmond. Jamie played a big part in that. Before him, you had friends in the industry who were shooting projects in England, but never anybody who's grounded and secured here. You craved stability, at least as much stability as you could get being an actress. You never thought you'd find it here, in Jamie.
"Hi, love," Jamie whispered from beside you. He had a hand on your thigh, "Whatcha thinkin' bout?"
"Just how much I missed all this," you motioned toward the loud, ruckus of the team around the both of you. You turned your head to look at him, placing a kiss on the tip of his nose, "How much I missed you."
"Don't get all sappy on me now, love," Jamie teased, though he wrapped an arm around you to pull you closer, "I'm the one that's hurt here. I'm the only one allowed to be sappy."
You faked a groan, rolling your eyes, "I suppose you're gonna be a big baby for the next few days."
"Oh yeah," he answered too quickly. He chuckled, placing a kiss on the crown of your head, "Gonna get so sick of me. We're gonna lay in bed for two days straight. Doc said I had to take it easy, remember?"
"You know that also means no sex, right?"
He turned to you in horror. He shook his head in disapproval, "Well Doc doesn't know what he's talkin' about anyway. He obviously doesn't know that my proper fit girlfriend hasn't been home in so long and that rest wasn't an option for me when you're only back for a week."
"Knock it off," Roy grumbled from in front of you. "You guys are fucking disgusting."
"Don't worry, grandad. I'll save some lovin' for ya." Jamie made kissy noises as he spoke to Roy, making you laugh uncontrollably in your seat.
By the time you made it back to the facility, the boys were buzzing to celebrate the night out partying-- all of them but Jamie. You were waiting in the car park by his car, thinking that you'd drive it to his place while he celebrated with the team, but you were caught by surprise when he walked out with his bag, looking as cozy as ever.
Dani and Colin waved to him, both excited to spend the night getting wasted with the team. Jamie walked towards you, careful not to put too much pressure on his ankle, and handed you his keys.
"You don't mind driving tonight, do you love?" He asked. "Need to get my ankle sorted before the next game and I don't want to do too much."
"I don't mind at all. I figured I would be drivin'," you replied, unlocking the car. You and Jamie both got in, adjusting the seat a bit so you could drive properly. Before you pulled out of the facility's premises, you turned to Jamie, "Are you not going to celebrate with the boys?"
"Nah," Jamie said, so casually. He buckled his seatbelt, twisting his body to grin at you, "See them lads every fuckin' day. Love 'em, but I love ya more. You're only here for a week so I'm makin' the most out of it."
"Such a romantic," you teased, but his words made your heart flutter. Jamie didn't know the effect he had on you and honestly, even if you tried to explain it to him, he probably wouldn't believe you.
It was already hard for him to believe that you said yes to dating him. Sure, if you had asked him a year ago if he saw himself with the hottest up-and-coming actress, his prick self would've said, "Of course, I'm Jamie fucking Tartt." But now that he's finally allowed himself to be vulnerable and care about people, that facade he once had no longer seemed necessary. With that side of him slowly fading, he'd be lying if he said small parts of his confidence didn't.
That's why he's so fucking lucky that you decided to take a chance on him. You never did anything that made him doubt how much he meant to you. He spent so much of his life trying to figure out who actually loved him and who didn't-- massive thanks to his dad for that one-- that it's so nice to not have to worry about something like that.
You made him feel so fucking loved that sometimes the idea of it overwhelmed him, in a good way of course. All the times he wondered if he was worthy of love seemed so trivial now.
The both of you fell into your comfortable routine as if you hadn't been gone for weeks when you got to Jamie's place. It was like you never left. In between the mundanity of getting ready for bed, you gave each other kisses on the cheek, and hugs from behind, always somehow touching each other or so close to each other.
At the end of the night, you and Jamie were lying in bed, Jamie's head on your chest. You were absentmindedly running your fingers through his hair, letting out a soft chuckle when he sighed happily. A few times throughout the night, he would get a video from one of the boys, pissed drunk, doing something so stupid, that you both could only hope that the paparazzi weren't there to see.
You talked to each other about everything that's happened over the last few weeks-- what restaurants you guys need to try together when Jamie visits you in New York, what new training regimen Roy prescribed Jamie, what Colin and Isaac were bickering about this week. You ended up falling asleep before Jamie because jetlag was finally catching up to you.
Jamie, who became the big spoon after you fell asleep, laid awake, unable to stop himself from smiling. This, he finally allowed himself to admit it, was something he could see himself doing for the rest of his life. With you sleeping soundly next to him, clinging to him like you never want to let go, Jamie lets himself deserve this good, loving life with you.

Tumblr media
When you first heard the news, you couldn’t believe it. You couldn’t believe that they could do such a thing. Not to the team, not to you. That was the reason you were stomping up the stair, the clinking of your heels echoing against the walls, as you reached Rebecca’s office.
You didn’t knock, you didn’t wait for them to welcome you in. They knew you were coming. Especially after the email they had sent out. The email had been sent only to the “necessary” people that needed to be involved, and you, being the social media manager for the club, received it. It was probably a way for them to warn you to start preparing the content for the announcement. But you obviously didn’t take it well. They knew about your history, they knew how things had gone down. They had to be expecting you.
“How could you?” Your loud, clear voice, full of anger and disappointment filled the room.
“Good morning, Y/N!” Ted’s cheerful greeting made you want to scream. “To what do we owe the pleasure?” The sarcasm was obvious.
“How could you? After what he did to the team? After what he said about you?” Your tone was loud, so much so that you were sure people from downstairs could clearly hear every single one of your words. “How could you?” You choked on your last words, and as you finally met Rebecca’s gaze, you could feel the familiar sting of the tears that threatened to fall, spill, pour.
The woman sighed, getting up from her chair to make her way around the big desk. “Listen, love, he’s a great player. When Ted told me about their talk, I knew we had to get him back.” She explained, walking over to her. “We cannot let our feelings get in the way of the team’s success.”
You shook your head, taking a step back. “I never thought you would become this cynical.”
“I’m not cynical, just rational.”
“It’s all the same thing. He’s a prick. And pricks don’t change.” You were furious. “And it’s not just my feelings, but the team’s feelings. But you obviously don’t remember how he used to treat everyone.” You lingered on that last word, looking briefly at each of them, before turning around and making your way out of the office and down the stairs. “No one understands.” You whisper, your fists so tight you started to feel that burning sensation of your nails leaving marks on your palms.
Keeping your head low, trying to hide the tears streaming down your face, you made your way to the changing room. You knew you couldn’t say anything to any of the boys yet, but still, you needed some comfort. You needed Sam.
You quickly reached the locker room and knocked, waiting for them to give you a sign to let you know you could come in. And, as soon as you opened the door, you ran straight to Sam, immediately burying your face in his chest.
“Hey, Y/N/N. What is going on?” His thick Nigerian accent immediately bringing comfort to you. “Did something happen?” He asked as he tried to pull away slightly, trying to understand what was happening.
“Just… hug me… please.” You pled, the voice muffled by his jersey. And he did. He wrapped his arms around you, softly placing a kiss on top of your head, before laying his chin in the same spot. You’re immediately comforted by the warmth of your best friend’s embrace. However, you didn’t fail to notice how the familiar chatter of the changing room had started to slowly simmer down until it ultimately came to a halt. A sense of pain and anxiety washed over you at once, and your head started again to fill with the same questions you had asked Rebecca and Ted. Why? Why him? Why now? How could they?
But soon, your stream of thoughts was interrupted by Isaac’s voice. “Who do we have to kill?” You didn’t need to raise your head from Sam’s chest to know that the feeling was shared by most if not all the team’s players.
“No one. Yet.” You mumbled, sniffling. “It’s complicated.” You added as you finally pulled away from Sam, yet still remaining extremely close to him, as if his presence was the only thing keeping you sane and calm at that moment.
“When the moment comes, just call, okay?” You gave a quick nod to the team captain, accompanied by a shy smile. To any casual passer-by, the comment may have seemed sarcastic, the usual banter between friends that care about each other. But the team knew that that was not sarcastic at all and that Isaac would indeed, without a shadow of a doubt, kill someone for you.
You couldn’t exactly remember when, but somewhere down the line, the team had become your chosen family. However, you could clearly remember how that process had started.
You had started working for AFC Richmond around the same time that Ted and Coach Beard did. You didn’t care much for football or sports in general, but you had just recently graduated from university and had found this work through Keeley. You and her had met at your cousin’s going away party a few years before, when he had decided to move to Greece to become an archaeologist. You had immediately bonded over who can even remember what, and remained close friends ever since. So, when she heard that the position had just opened up, she immediately sent your CV to Rebecca, without warning you first. You found out about the job only when you received a call from a certain Mr Higgins, who told you that they had read your curriculum and found it really interesting. And so, you ended up moving to Richmond-upon-Thames and started working for the club.
It didn’t take you long to get to know the team and become friends with them. Obviously, you had your prejudices against footballers, who you thought were self-centred egomaniacs – and you weren’t completely wrong about that – but, to your surprise, most of them turned out to be great people. You quickly became very close with Sam; Roy tolerated you; Isaac and Colin were always kind to you. Even Jamie Tartt, the prick of the team, would usually drop his dickhead persona when he was with you. And that was how you two ended up together. For the first month or so, you would notice his constant flirting, but you never really gave it too much thought. You had read about him in the tabloids, and you knew how he was famous for having a different girl every week. You weren’t that oblivious, you knew he was fit. But, every time he would flirt with you, you would play along for a while, before brushing it off and going back to your business. I’m just his latest challenge, he will move on sooner or later, you thought. Until, roughly a month and a half after you had started working there: he started waiting for you outside the clubhouse, asking you if you needed a ride home. Which then turned into him asking you to grab a coffee with him one day before practice. Then it was dinners. Movie nights at his place. Stolen glances in the hallways of the clubhouse. Sneaking in the boot room to secretly make out. And sooner than you could realise, you were sleeping over at his place most of the time.
You asked him to keep things private for a while. It wasn’t that you were ashamed of him. You just needed to be sure about him. So, you kept sneaking around. Avoiding each other as much as possible, too worried that the team might just figure it out. Let me show you off, Jamie would whisper into your ear, in-between wet kisses, as he stood behind you in the kitchen in the morning, wrapping his arms around your waists. Let me take you out to a restaurant, on a proper date, he insisted. But you kept declining his offers. Not yet, baby, you would reply, as you slowly melted under his touch, I need a little more time, you said as you turned around in his arms. And the conversation would die there, with Jamie immediately picking you up and placing you on top of the kitchen counter, his lips trailing their way down your neck, your collarbone, your chest, down, down, until your vision turned hazy and you had to grip onto the marble countertop with all the strength you had in your body, too afraid you might fall off of it, as his lips met finally met your core.
You were able to keep your relationship private longer than you had expected. It was after almost 4 weeks that Nate eventually walked in on you two in the boot room. You weren’t doing anything too private, you were merely making out. But Nate being Nate, froze on his feet as he saw you two holding onto each other, too stunned to move. I was… I needed to… sorry… I didn’t…. As usual, he was too embarrassed to form a complete sentence, so he simply left the room. You two looked at each other and knew that it was only a matter of time before your secret would be out. And you were right. The secret didn’t last the entire day, and when it was time to go home after practice, you were met by a horde of football players, asking you when it had started, how long had that been going on, if you two were official, and so on.
Somehow, but still not completely unexpectedly, the news reached the press in less than a day. The next morning, as you lied in bed with Jamie’s head on your chest, you were woken up by the constant buzzing of your phone. Check this article from The Sun, said a message from your high school friend, with a link attached to it. Is it true? Asked your mother. Congratulations! read the message from your aunt from whom you hadn’t heard in ages. And the messages kept coming. Yes, it was true. You were now in a relationship. Yes, your boyfriend was a famous footballer. Yes, you knew about his fame. Still, you didn’t care. Because, when Jamie was with you, he wasn’t Jamie Tartt, star striker for AFC Richmond, but just Jamie. And you loved just Jamie. He was sweet, he was passionate, he was kind, he always made sure you were feeling well, he brought you flowers once a week, he left some coffee for you in the pot in the mornings, he always made sure you were sexually satisfied – something he was really proud of.
Sadly, you hadn’t realised that, with going public, also came the hate from his fans, who thought that you would be too distracting for their beloved favourite player, and from the girls, the actresses, the top models, the reality tv stars, who had hoped to one day end up with him and whose dream you had shattered overnight. You pulled through it, and that was also thanks to Jamie, who never missed the chance to remind you how much he loved you and cared for you.
However, two months after going public, things started to change. You couldn’t understand why if it was something that you had done or said, but he started to become distant, cold. He would invite you less and less over to his place, and when he did, it was mainly to have sex, to ‘release the tension from practice’. And whenever the team lost, the sex would be rough. He was always on his phone, texting, dming, emailing. A part of you knew it was girls he was talking to, but you couldn’t bring yourself to confront him about it, so you just said nothing and held on. He soon stopped asking you how you were, telling you how much he loved you. You tried asking him what was going on, but he would always deny everything, saying that you were imagining things, that you were just paranoid, and that everything was fine. Fine. Oh, how you came to hate that word. You asked him how he was. Fine. You asked him if he wanted to spend the night together. Fine. You asked him if he wanted to drive to the clubhouse together. Fine. Fine. Fine. Fine. You hated fine. In Jamie’s language, fine meant if you really have to, or I would rather you left me alone, or I don’t really care. You hated it. And you hated what your relationship had become. But still, something stopped you from leaving him, maybe the hope that soon things would go back to normal, that soon he would go back to being just Jamie.
But that never happened.
And things only got worse when Ted decided to take him out during a match. You knew that Ted was doing it to teach him a lesson, and he was right to want to do so. But as you watched your boyfriend leave the pitch, you knew things would only get worse. So, you stopped constantly looking for him. You stopped texting him every day. You only met when he asked you.
It was in that period that you grew closer to Sam. You could distinctly remember the day he walked into your office to ask you for a few suggestions on how to make his Instagram page more appealing. Instead walked in on you sitting on the floor, with your back against the wall and your hands in your hair. You didn’t even have the strength to pretend things were okay, so you simply looked up, black lines scarring your cheeks, and met his eyes. “Sorry, Sam, it’s… not a great moment.” You struggled to get the words out.
But Sam didn’t say anything. Instead, he closed the door behind him, made his way across the room and took a seat on the floor next to you. “Is it Jamie?” He asked with his thick Nigerian accent that you would grow to love and even find familiar. You nodded silently. “Do you want to talk about it?” You shook your head. “Do we just sit in silence?” A nod. A beat. Then your head slowly fell to the side, until it found its resting place on his shoulder.
You don’t exactly know how long you stayed there, on the floor, in silence. It could have been a few minutes or entire hours. In either case, Sam stayed there, and didn’t leave your side. He never once took out his phone to check his messages, even though you could feel it buzzing in his pocket. He only changed position once, to move his arm and wrap it around your shoulders. That was the first time you had spent that much time in silence with someone without feeling the need to fill it with superficial chatter.
From that day forward, you and Sam were inseparable. There was something about him that simply brought you comfort, a comfort that not even Jamie had been able to give you. Whenever you weren’t sleeping over at Jamie’s, he would come to pick you up and drive you to work. He would drive you home in the evenings, making sure you were all the way inside your house, before sprinting off the road to go home himself. You would start having lunch together, usually joined by some of the other guys – in all of this, most of the time Jamie was nowhere to be found. And whenever your boyfriend acted like a dick with you in front of everyone, he would speak up. Are you his boyfriend now, Sammy? Jamie would mock him, using your nickname for him. I don’t think so. She’s me girl, so I’ll talk to her how I want, a’ight? He would puff out his chest, trying to look bigger and intimidating.
That evening, after practice was over, Jamie sprinted off to who knows where or to who knows who, leaving you there, alone. And, as per usual, Sam would come to the rescue, offering you a lift home.
“Why are you still with him?” Sam asked you as he stopped in front of your house. “You deserve better, not an asshole like him.”
You shook your head. “He’s not like that when it’s just the two of us.” You would always find a way to make excuses for him.
“I don’t care how he is when he’s alone with you, Y/N! If he really loves you, he should treat you well in public as well!” You had never really heard Sam raising his voice before, and it would have been a lie if you had said that you were not intimidated. But, despite everything, you could feel the care and preoccupation in his voice. “You deserve someone that truly cares for you, and that isn’t afraid to show it!” You knew he was right. Yet, you couldn’t bring yourself to say something, to break up with him.
But you never had to.
It was maybe a week after your discussion with Sam when you showed up unannounced at his place. It was cold outside, and you were only wearing a thick jumper. You stood there, in front of his door for at least three whole minutes, before finally knocking on his door. You knocked instead of ringing the bell so that if he was already asleep, you wouldn’t wake him. But he had heard it, and less than 10 seconds later, he was opening the door.
“Y/N, what are you-” He didn’t even finish his question. He took one look at you and knew exactly what had happened. He took your hand gently in his, and immediately pulled you inside, guiding you to the living room. “Wait here a moment.” He said, making you seat on the couch, before running off in search of a blanket. “Okay, wrap yourself in this while I put the kettle on.” He opened the blanket and put it around your shoulders.
“Stay here, please.” You whispered, grabbing him by the wrist before he could move away again.
“But you’re shivering.”
“Just… please.”
As soon as he met your eyes once again, he felt his heart drop to his stomach. He had seen you in distress before, he had comforted you multiple times after your fights with Jamie. But this time he didn’t even need for you to tell him what had happened, he already knew. He took a seat next to you, fixing the blanket so that it was properly covering your entire body, before pulling you to his chest.
“He said that I was too much work.” The words left your mouth watery. “That I asked too much of him. And that, since he was going back to Man City, it was better to call it quits.” You whispered. You could feel Sam’s body tense, the air blowing through his nose. You knew he wanted to say a lot of things. He wanted to tell you that he was a dickhead, that he never realised what he had in front of him, that he had just lost the best woman he could ever find, that he was a moron, a jerk, an idiot, a fool. But he didn’t. He remained silent. And he did the best he could to comfort you. He stroke your hair and your back, he rocked you and hummed to you, until you fell asleep.
After that night, it didn’t take long for the rest of the team to find out what had happened, and how it had happened. Every single one of the boys sent you a text, saying, each in their own way, that they were sorry, that Jamie was a dick, and that they were there for you if you needed them. And you were glad to know so many people cared for you, people that up until a few months ago didn’t even know you and that you would have never expected in your life to end up being friends with. They all stopped and hugged you when they met you in the corridor for the first time after it had happened. But some of them surprised you.
You hadn’t been able to sleep for the last few nights, which was made obvious to everyone by the way you dragged your feet against the floor whenever you walked around the clubhouse, your legs too heavy for your exhausted body to properly move. You had also stopped taking care of yourself. Yes, you showered and brushed your teeth because you hated not being presentable for work. But you had stopped brushing your hair every morning and every night, like your grandmother had thought you when you were little. And you had stopped wearing make-up. Not that you would normally put on a full face every day, but you stopped using mascara because it made your eyes burn whenever you cried, and the light concealer you used under your eyes to make yourself look fresher, more awake. And now your puffy red eyes and dark circles were there, on display, for everyone to see, a reminder of how you were feeling.
That morning you had opted for a very comfortable pair of sweatpants and a warm AFC Richmond hoodie. Using supportiveness as a way to hide your depression. Smart, you thought. Sad. You were sitting in your office, alone, working on the new social media campaign, when suddenly you heard someone knock on your door. “Come in.” You said flatly. As the door opened, you looked up from your laptop, only to see Sam walk in, followed by Isaac, Colin and Dani. “How can I help you, boys?” You forced a smile on your face.
“Want to watch a movie with us tonight?” Asked Isaac, taking the lead. You looked at the quartet in front of you, unsure of what to say. “We can watch whatever sad movie you prefer, and Dani can bring some Mezcal.”
“Boys, I-” You started, but you were instantly cut off.
“Uh-uh!” The Welsh stepped forward. “We don’t want to hear any I’d rather be alone or I don’t want to be a bother bullshit, okay? We want to do this.”
“Yes, we only asked to be nice, but if you say no, we will just kidnap you and force you to do it.” Said Sam, a soft, warm smile on his face, as he leaned over your desk.
“Por favor, Y/N” Dani pled, showing you his big, brown puppy eyes.
“Fine!” You gave in. “On one condition: we order Chinese.”
They all look at each other, before bursting out laughing.

Meet Cousin McAdoo
Fandom: Ted Lasso
Pairing: Jamie Tartt x F!Reader
Summary: You're visiting your cousin, Isaac, in Richmond for a few weeks. During your stay, you become familiar with the little city as well as its very own AFC Richmond football club.
A/N: I was going to do a bunch of headcanons but i suddenly got bit with the writing bug and it ended up being a full fledged fic. Whoops!
Isaac walks into the locker room with a determined look on his face. A majority of his team was already there, so he stands in front of everyone and hollers, "Oi! Listen up!" he waits until he sees that all eyes are on him, he continues, "My cousin is visiting Richmond for a few weeks. She's comin' over here so I can show her around. I want all of you," he points around the room, "to be on your best behavior. Understand?"
"What's happenin'?" asks Jamie as he walks in.
"Isaac's cousin is visiting, so be your best behavior," Sam says, catching the striker up.
Jamie grins, "Aren't I always on me best behavior?"
The guys roll their eyes as Jamie makes his way to his cubby, getting ready for practice.
Everyone's on the pitch when Higgins comes out, "Sorry, team, can I have a moment?"
"WHISTLE!" Roy yells, which causes everyone to pause.
Higgins speaks up, "Isaac, your cousin is here."
Isaac looks confused, "She's not supposed to be here until tomorrow."
"HI ISAAC!" you yell from Rebecca's office window. You're waving your arms excitedly.
"I thought you were comin' tomorrow!" He yells up at you.
"Surprise!" you're giggling, "I'll be down in a bit!"
Isaac nods and gives you a wave.
The boys are back to practice when you join Roy on the sidelines of the pitch, "Nice to meet you, Coach Kent," you don't offer a hand to him. You know, from what Isaac's told you, he isn't fond of touching people.
He nods and grunts, which you don't take personally.
Isaac, lightly jogs over to you, "Hey, cousin!" he goes to hug you but you stop him.
"Ew! Don't hug me, weirdo. You're all gross and sweaty."
"Pft," he puts out his fist and you fist bump him, "It's good to see you."
"Thanks for letting me stay with you while I'm here."
Isaac shrugs, "Of course."
"WHISTLE! WHISTLE!" Roy cries out and you look at him, bewildered, then back to Isaac, "Does he-"
"He's allergic to metal," Isaac answers swiftly.
"Interesting," you say with a nod.
"Take a five minute break!"
At Roy's words, Colin comes up to Isaac's side, "Hi! I'm Colin. Isaac's-"
"Best mate! It's so nice to meet you!" you shake his hand and the rest of the boys follow.
You meet Jan Maas, Richard, Sam, Dani, etc. etc. The meeting goes by quickly as Roy yells for everyone to get back to drills.
Isaac gives you a wave as he heads back onto the pitch. You stand on the side watching everything.
"Isaac," Dani catches his Captain's attention.
"Yeah, bruv?"
"You and your cousin do not look alike."
"We're not blood related. Her aunt married my uncle. We're cousins by marriage but still family nonetheless."
"Your cousin is very attractive," Jan Maas states in his usual Dutch bluntness.
Isaac's eyes narrow at Jan Maas and grabs his shirt by the collar, "Don't talk about my cousin like that."
Jamie joins in, "But he's right, Isaac. Your cousin's mad fit!"
Isaac pauses his drill and looks at the boys around him, "You all listen to me and listen well, none of you are worthy enough for my cousin. So stay away. Got it?" The angry and protective look on Isaac's face was enough to make the guys nod and scurry away, not wanting to be the receiving end of their captain's potential anger.
____________________
After Isaac's showered and changed, he gives you a tour of the place. His knowledge is lacking since there are certain places he hasn't been to before, but he tries his best. When he tells you the team has a therapist, you're very impressed, especially since Isaac admits to going a few times himself. You find it very admirable.
The tour then ends at the locker room after Isaac makes sure that everyone's decent.
You pout a little, "Dammit, Isaac, I wanted to see some fit naked footballers!" Isaac looks at you with disgust while some of the guys chuckle.
"You still can if you want!" Bumbercatch responds, but gulps after Isaac shoots him a look, "Just kidding."
You snort, "I was joking too, but thanks for the offer." You nudge Isaac, "Can we grab something to eat now? I'm starving."
"Yeah! Actually," he turns to Sam, "Are we good?"
"A table is already waiting for you at Ola's."
"Sweet. Thanks, bruv!" Isaac goes over to Sam and they do a typical 'bro hug'.
"It was nice meeting all of you! I'll probably see you again during my time here!" you wave at the team and they all wave back as you and Isaac exit the locker room.
All eyes are following you out. You look back and your eyes catch the blue-gray eyes of none other than Jamie Tartt. He gives you a shy smile and you give him a wink before you continue following Isaac out.
"Oi!" Colin thumps Jamie's head, "Isaac said to be on your best behavior."
"All I did was smile at her! She's the one that winked at me!" the striker explains, defending himself.
"I'm keeping an eye on you Tartt," Colin says before walking out of the locker room as well.

Hi there!! I’m the anon that requested the wedding date fic, which was absolutely fabulous, and I was wondering if you’d be willing to write about Jamie and reader’s wedding? It doesn’t need to be a continuation of that fic (and obviously you don’t need to write it if you’re not vibing with it!) I just thought it could be cute 💚
it took me a while to vibe with it, but I finally did!! Thanks for the request!

right words at the right time
“Don’t bite your nails!” your sister shrieks from across the room. You whip your hand out of your mouth.
“I wasn’t,” you reply.
She raises an eyebrow. “Sure. Sure you weren’t. Here, eat something instead.”
“I can’t,” you say. “I’m too nervous. What if something goes wrong?”
“Like what?” Keeley asks from her position by the mirror. She slicks back a flyaway hair and dabs at the corner of her mouth.
“I dunno, what if- what if I trip? What if Ted forgets what he’s supposed to say? What if Jamie says no?”
Your sister and Keeley exchange a look.
“He’s the one who asked you,” Rebecca says before either of them can can snark back at you.
You’re still not convinced. “What if he’s changed his mind?” you ask worriedly.
Your sister bangs her head against the wall. You weren’t this nervous last night when you were out partying with the girls. None of the women in the room are quite sure what’s come over you.
“He hasn’t changed his mind,” Rebecca says in a placating tone. “Look at your hand. See that diamond? Does that look like something Jamie would forget about?”
“No,” you reply weakly. “But what if he wants it back? Or remembers that he’s famous and rich and I literally am neither of those things. I have a face that was made for the radio!”
“Oh my god,” you sister says, throwing her hands in the air. “He’s marrying you. Please calm the fuck down. You literally have to walk down the aisle in half an hour.”
Your nail is in your mouth again so Keeley reaches up and smacks it away.
She says, “Babes, I love you to fucking pieces, but you seriously need to calm down, yeah? It’s alright.”
There’s a knock on the door and you jump.
“Almost ready?” Ted asks. “The boys are getting mighty anxious out there.”
‘The boys’ he’s referring to are the entirety of AFC Richmond, who may have been the reason this marriage is even happening. After all, it was Colin who swore he met the perfect person for Jamie and Dani who convinced you to go on a blind date. Sam provided the venue (obviously) and Isaac, Declan, and Richard made sure Jamie didn’t wear something stupid.
Rebecca opens the door a crack. “She’s getting mighty anxious in here.”
Ted frowns. “Pre-wedding jitters are normal, but you got nothing to worry about, darlin’. Two hundred of your closest friends and family are all here to support you on your big day.”
You blow out a breath. “More like thirty of my closest friends and family. The rest are for Jamie. Fuck’s sake, Ted, what am I doing? I shouldn’t be here. Do you know how much money he spent on this fucking wedding? It’s more than I make in two years. Don’t get me wrong, it’s literally my dream, but I just feel like I’m not going to measure up. He’s going to get bored of me sooner or later.”
Ted tilts his head and you feel oddly comforted under his scrutinizing gaze. “Alright, come with me,” he says after a moment of deliberation. “Everyone’s outside, I’m just gonna sneak you down the hall a little bit. You trust me?”
You nod and take his proffered arm. Your sister breathes, “Thank fuck,” as you leave, and you’re pretty sure you hear Keeley echo the sentiment.
Ted leads you to a door at the end of the hall and motions for you to stand against the wall, just out of sight. He knocks.
“Jamie? You got a minute?”
The door opens and you clamp a hand over your mouth to keep from making noise.
“Your girl’s having a bit of a pre-marital fright, so I brought her down to talk to ya. If you just sit down and stick your hand out the door, she can grab it and you won’t see her before you’re supposed to.”
Jamie says, “Sounds good, coach,” and his head is replaced by an arm. You stare at it for a minute before Ted motions you to grab Jamie’s hand. You sit down, back against the wall, and reach for Jamie who gives you a reassuring squeeze.
“Christ love, your hands are fucking sweaty,” he says and you can tell by his voice that he’s smiling.
Something about hearing him makes tears well up, and you sniff.
“Babe, what’s wrong?” Jamie asks. “You crying because you’re so happy your husband is mad fit and mad rich?”
You say, “No. Well, kind of,” and it’s all Jamie can do not to break the stupid fucking tradition of not seeing the bride before she walks down the aisle.
“Tell me,” he says softly. Ted hands you a tissue and then retreats back where he came from.
You sniff. “I’m really excited to marry you. I really fucking am. It’s just- you’re so much, you know? It’s one of the things I love about you. And I’m not, not really. I’m just me, and I don’t want you to realize that you can do better.”
Jamie maneuvers your hand so he can press a kiss to your knuckles.
“You worry too much,” he says. “We’re doing this shit, for better or for worse, yeah? How do I know you won’t realize you can do better than me? Dump me for some fit nerd.”
“You are a fit nerd,” you laugh through tears. “Football nerd, but still a nerd.”
Jamie snorts. “Shit babe, you know how to make a bloke feel special.”
You’re both silent for a minute, taking comfort in the fact that the love of your life is on the other side of the door.
The moment is broken by Keeley’s appearance.
“Time to go back into hiding, babe,” she says.
You sigh, and Jamie squeezes your hand one more time. “See you in a bit, love,” he says.
Keeley helps you off the floor and back down to the room.
“All good?” she asks.
“All good,” you reply.

Chapter Nine
After a few weeks, you’d already got used to the tube journey from Richmond to Somerset House. You reluctantly found out that, despite London being one city and the tube routes being easy, it was so fucking huge that it took you almost an hour to get to work. Maybe that was your fault for staying in Richmond instead of moving, but you didn’t mind a longer commute into the City of London if that meant you got to stay put.
Pluto Press was unique, and you felt proud to have a position there. Your desk was by the window, looking over the Strand outside. Your colleagues were nice, and you got to work alongside artists and writers wherever you went. It was like a dream come true. Which was why, as you arrived home on the Friday of your second week, you couldn’t understand why you felt so… shit. You felt lonely, isolated, and so overtired that you were certain your brain wasn’t working at full capacity. You missed the team at AFC Richmond, talks with Keeley and Rebecca, Ted’s american jokes– Roy.
Since his last game, Roy had gone off the grid. You were lucky if you randomly saw him out and about in Richmond. You’d attempted to meet up with him after his retirement press conference, a month after the end of your placement and his injury, but to no avail. And even now, staring at your phone, glass of wine in your hand as you settled in for another Friday night alone, you had the urge to text him. You downed your wine before you did, and dropped the glass onto your coffee table as you opened up Roy’s and yours text chain. Then, you typed:
Are you coming to the game tomorrow? I’d love to see you!
Enthusiasm wasn’t the key to Roy’s heart, but you’d run out of options to get him to respond. It was only a friendly match, anyway, since the season was still a few months out. You wanted to imagine him there tomorrow, black shirt and black leather jacket donned, hands stuffed in his pockets, as he settled into his seat at the Dogtrack– not as a player, but as an admirer, maybe.
When you sat in the owner’s box the next day, with the whistle about to be blown, you couldn’t stop calling yourself an idiot. Why the fuck would Roy want to come back here, of all places? The pitch where he played his last game, the stadium where he trained for his last season ever, surrounded by the people who got to keep playing after he all but faded away.
You settled into your seat with a sour taste in your mouth and a frown on your face. Keeley squeezed your hand affectionately. “You okay, babe?” she asked.
You shook your head, trying to get yourself out of this hole. “I asked Roy to come,” you told her. “Stupid, really.”
Keeley frowned at you empathetically. “ You tried, babe, but I think that’s all we can do right now after his retirement.”
You nodded, feeling sick. “Yeah.” You forced yourself to perk up, to focus on the positives, and abruptly shot up from your seat. “Come on, Richmond!” you screamed into the void, in some attempt to make you feel better about it all.
That feeling only lasted so many days. By Tuesday of the next week, you were back to feeling overwhelmed, overtired, and so lonely that you genuinely didn’t know what to do with yourself. Most of your colleagues at work didn’t live anywhere near the west, so you were forced to leave after work drinks early, or not go at all, just to get home at a reasonable hour.
The walk from Richmond station to your flat was becoming so dull that you could hardly stand it. One Thursday in the beginning of July, you elected to cut through Richmond Green and travel a longer route home, just to stop your brain from imploding. You left the station in the complete opposite direction to your flat, and said fuck it in your head. You passed over the green, treading along the concrete paving around the edge, until you reached Mae’s pub.
To your surprise, inside you saw the unmistakable moustache of one Ted Lasso, sitting opposite the familiar hat donned by one Coach Beard. Your heart soared, and you bound into the pub before you could tell yourself to slow the fuck down. Ted spotted you as soon as you entered the bar, and stood up immediately. You realigned your direction of movement and took a hard right, heading straight towards the coaches.
“Well, howdy–!” You wrapped your arms around him before he’d even finished speaking. The happy smile on his face quickly dropped to a confused frown. Ted embraced you warmly, and it was clear to see that something was very wrong. “Hey–” He was going to ask if you were alright, but he stopped himself. “It’s okay. It’s alright.”
Beard peered up at the two of you, his face stoney and thoughtful. His finger tapped on his chin in subtle curiosity and concern. Ted didn’t urge you to say anything, not for those few moments where he held you tightly. Beard gestured to Mae at the bar, and whispered “One lager, please, Mae. On our tab.” She brought it over in a matter of seconds, and you finally pulled away from Ted long enough to suck in a breath.
You glanced at the beer on the table for you. “Thank you, Mae,” you croaked, turning to look at her as she strolled back to the bar. She smiled at you warmly, and you finally took a seat alongside the coaches. “Sorry, Coach. Didn’t mean to ambush you,” you breathed out.
“I don’t mind it, not when it’s you who’s doing the ambushing,” Ted said, taking a sip of his beer and waving it off like it was nothing.
“Seems to me like there’s something going on,” Beard chimed in, and took a sip of beer to mimic Ted before him. His eyes seemed mischievous, like he was looking for gossip, but that was generally what Beard looked like when he wanted to know something. He was like an old, wise owl. He placed his beer back on the table. “It’s either that, or I just haven’t noticed that you’ve always looked like you’re in the middle of an existential crisis.”
“Very funny,” you let out, tapping your glass anxiously. “I’d go with the former over the latter, Beard.”
“I know,” he said, before he smiled at you knowingly. “Penny for your thoughts?”
You frowned at the table while Ted and Beard waited patiently for you to open up. You felt silly. How could you put your loneliness into words when it felt so unnatural? You had no reason to feel so terrible. You had a great new job, lived in a gorgeous neighbourhood, and had everything you could possibly want in life. You had the guys, and couldn’t wait until the season started up again in a few months, despite them being relegated to the Championship. You had Keeley and Rebecca, two strong and powerful women who you could confide in and rely on if you really needed to. You had… Well, that was just it.
Did you really have Roy anymore?
“It’s so stupid,” you started, trying to keep yourself steady, but all composure went out of the window as soon as those three words left your lips. “I have no reason to be this way. My new job is fucking fantastic, and I still get to live in Richmond, in my flat that I love so much, and I still get to go to games and see the guys and walk to Nelson Road across the green. This is all so fucking stupid.” You smacked your hands over your face in frustration. “I have no reason to feel this alone.” Your words were muffled beneath your palms, but Ted and Beard still glanced at each other with concern.
“You’re feeling lonely?” Ted asked gently.
You dragged your hands down your cheeks and sniffed through your snotty nose. “A little bit.”
“A little bit.” Beard mimicked you. You scoffed abruptly, and it felt good just for a second.
Ted shuffled next to you, and readied himself to speak. “Lemme tell you something about loneliness,” he started. “When you feel it, you always feel silly. You feel like a dang moron, because all it does is make you think about all the people you have in your life that are there to listen to you, yet when you reach out, you pretend not to feel that loneliness, am I right?”
You remembered the text you’d sent to Roy. So over enthusiastic in some attempt to hide how awful you’d been feeling. When he didn’t respond, or give you any indication that he’d even read your message, it just made you feel even worse. If you’d been honest, maybe he would have been more inclined to reply.
You nodded at Ted in understanding. “It’s hard sometimes. To tell people close to you that you’re struggling.”
“Oh, don’t I know it,” Ted said. “That’s the catch, ain’t it? You wanna keep things light, you wanna keep things happy, but sometimes you can’t. And that’s alright. It’s okay to feel lonely, and tired, and tearful. Don’t beat yourself up for any of that.”
You held onto Ted’s words for dear life. You’d never understand how he was able to be so optimistic, so constantly happy. No one was truly like that, so you bet it was all a bit of an act. Even so, Ted had a way of getting through to you. His words resonated, and you found yourself listening to him more than shrugging him off. He was good to you. You had the small green, army man that he’d given you for good luck, in your pocket or your bag constantly, moving it around like a chapstick from garment to garment.
Even now, as you gently stuck your hand into your jacket pocket, the army man was there. Gun raised, knees bent in a defensive stance, ready to protect you.
“Have you… heard from Roy?” you asked.
Beard looked at Ted sullenly, almost, and you understand immediately. “Roy will be Roy,” Ted said, smiling at you halfheartedly. “His retirement press conference, though– jeez, it didn’t half tug on my heartstrings, here.”
“The end of an era,” Beard said, widening his eyes with grandeur.
“I haven’t seen him since the Man City game in May,” you said. “Two months.”
“He’ll come around eventually,” Ted said, trying to reassure you, but you were sure that nothing but seeing Roy’s face in person would be able to do that. Ted suddenly perked up. “Anyway, how’s the new job! Got some new friends? Got some new besties? Oh– have you met anyone special yet?”
If you didn’t already know Ted, this would be incredibly out of the blue. But, you did know him. He was sweet, and kind, and capable of distracting you from your sadness. He made you feel welcome, and loved, and thought about. And– he made you roll your eyes to oblivion.
You did just that, rolled your eyes into your skull with a smile on your face. “Job is great, but the dating pool is still very much dry, Ted.”
“Dang it!” he exclaimed. “Maybe the guys were right, all those months ago, huh? You should get on some dating apps, just for funzies.”
“Keeley has been wanting me to try out one, to be honest. It’ll only be a matter of time before she forces all of you guys to get on it,” you said, pointing at Ted and Beard in warning. “It’s called… um– something with a B. Like, Bantz, or Bumz. I don’t know.” You waved your hand in front of your face, giving up on remembering.
“Might be worth a try all the same?” Ted said, egging you on.
You sat for a moment, thinking, before you nodded. “Yeah, maybe you’re right. I should put myself out there, yeah?”
“Heck yeah,” Ted said enthusiastically. “No harm in it, right?”
Was there any harm in it? Surely not. You were a single woman, you were free to branch out. But, underneath it all, there was still something that held you back. Without meaning to, Roy’s head popped into the back of your mind. All that you’d shared over your year at Richmond, that unspoken thing that fluctuated between you.
You thought back to his final game then, as you remembered it all. The gentle way you held each other’s faces as you knelt on the floor beneath him, just to be close, just to let him know that you were there. The soft way he’d draped his arm over your shoulder as the team gathered after relegation. Despite the loss, and the end of his career, Roy had still laughed alongside the guys. His fingers had skimmed over your knuckles under those fluorescent lights, noticed by everyone, but it had all gone unsaid. It didn’t need to be mentioned, not when everyone had known this was bound to happen eventually.
You and him, him and you. It fit, didn’t it?
But, with the silence of the past few months, you didn’t know anymore. Maybe it was just the proximity, the familiarity of being around each other, that had made you believe it all to be so. Roy hadn’t said a word to you in months, hadn’t tried to. Had it all been in your mind?
As you finished your pint with Ted and Beard, talking about the new season, you forced yourself to stop thinking about Roy. You’d let him know you were there, and it had gone unreciprocated. As much as a part of you still yearned for him to be near, you had to stop putting in effort when he wasn’t trying to do the same to you.
The name of the dating app was Bantr, and as soon as you messaged Keeley to say you were doing it, she replied with a winky face. You scoffed to yourself as you filled out your profile, and within an hour had got chatting to a guy from Richmond.
The thing about Bantr; it was anonymous. You knew ages, and usernames, and location, but not actual names, or looks. It was a refreshing change from other apps, and you found yourself having a great conversation. Within a week, you’d already arranged to go out for dinner in the town.
As you walked to your date, a week or so after seeing Ted and Beard, you spoke to Keeley on the phone for a pep talk.
“What if he’s ugly? Or boring?” you said.
“Give it a chance, babes, you haven’t even met him yet!”
“I know, I know. I don’t think I was made for dating apps, honestly,” you let out, laughing to yourself to avoid a proper anxious meltdown. You thought you looked quite good, as you wore the same jumpsuit that you had for the charity ball last year. It was amongst the only fancy clothes you fucking owned.
“You’ll get used to it. How long has it been, anyway?”
“Since I’ve got some, or since I’ve been on a date?” you joked.
Keeley cackled down the phone. “The date. No– both.”
“A long time. For both, unfortunately.” You could practically feel Keeley grimacing.
“Go and get some then, babes,” she urged you on. “You never know, he might be your soulmate.”
You felt sick immediately, and frowned in disgust. “Ew, stop talking like that. Soulmates aren’t real. And if they were, I doubt I would meet him on Bantr.”
“Stop being so cynical,” she said, like a teacher telling off a student. “Take it from me– even if he’s not your soulmate, still try and have a good time, alright?”
You laughed softly. “Alright,” you gave in.
“You deserve some fun! Promise me you'll have fun,” Keeley said sternly. You would never be able to deny her.
“I promise,” you let out, alongside a smile.
“Tell me everything. Love you.”
“Love you too, babes,” you said, before you hung up.
You dropped your phone into your bag, and inhaled sharply as you made your way into the restaurant. Maybe this would be a good thing. A change of pace, something to get you back out there into the real world. As you waited at the bar, you shoved away the thought of Roy from your head. He didn’t belong there anymore, not when hed made no attempt to stay close.
Rebecca had been right. Footballers were dangerous. Especially the ones who pretended not to care.
You spent the first twenty minutes of your date wondering if you were being pranked. There had to be a camera crew round the corner, there had to be some presenter who would pop out and tell you it was all a massive joke– because he was gorgeous.
Lucas was his name. He had a face that lit up a room, and a voice that whacked you in the chest. For a week, you’d been discussing books, films and all the things you enjoyed over text. That didn’t change when you were face to face, but the accompaniment of seeing his face was definitely a plus. He bought you drinks, and was interested when you spoke, and all the things you’d been dying for over the past few years of being chronically single.
“You’re new to the area, aren’t you?” he asked, as you finished your main courses.
“Partially,” you said, tapping your wine glass. “I moved here last year for a masters degree.”
“Oh, fantastic. In what?”
You let out a breath. “It’s sort of a long story.”
“We’ve got time,” he said, smiling. “We still haven’t had dessert.”
Jesus fucking Christ, he was utterly perfect. You told him everything. The mix up from the university, the placement being at AFC Richmond, of all places. You spoke about your time there in depth, not even realising that you’d been whittling on about the guys, and Ted and Beard, for a while. By the time you were done, your dessert plates were thoroughly devoured, and you’d both moved onto something a little stronger. Lucas swilled a whiskey, and you clutched onto a gin and tonic.
“That sounds like an awfully big adventure,” Lucas said, awestruck, when you were finally finished.
“It was a blessing in disguise, really,” you said, smiling to yourself as all the memories of the year came flooding back. “I still got a position at Pluto Press, and I got to know some of the best people I’ve ever known. Luck was really on my side for this one, I think.”
“Definitely sounds like it,” Lucas said, gawking at you with eyes that only made you feel one thing; heard. “So, you’re still friends with them all?”
You nodded. “Absolutely. I saw Ted and Beard last week, actually. They convinced me to get on Bantr, funnily enough.”
“Well,” Lucas said softly. “You’ll have to thank them the next time you see them. I wouldn’t have met you otherwise.” Your heart lurched in your chest. You fought the urge to look away and cool your face down by fanning your hands. “Also, you need to do me a favour,” he continued, and you smiled questioningly.
“What’s that?”
“I was a big Chelsea fan growing up, the biggest, if you can imagine it,” Lucas said. “My favourite player of all time was number six, Roy Kent.” Your heart dropped into your gut. When before it had been pumping happily, it was now a stone in your stomach, ready to be ejected through your windpipe. “The next time you see him, can you get me his autograph?”
You stopped breathing for a moment, from a lack of what to say. As soon as Lucas saw your face, he changed his demeanour immediately.
He leant forward and looked at you with a gentle smile. “I’m totally joking,” he said quickly. You could breathe again, and found yourself stuttering out some chuckles of relief. “It was a joke, truly,” he repeated himself.
The two of you shared some awkward laughter, but you were thankful it was all a bit of fun. “You scared me,” you said. “You don’t know Roy. If I asked for an autograph he’d fully think I’d gone mad.”
“You seem to know him quite well,” Lucas figured out. “I’m probably barking up the wrong tree, but he doesn’t seem like the friendly type.”
Your chest burst with the need to defend him immediately. “That’s not true at all. Don’t believe what the press says,” you said quickly. “Roy is… he’s… well– an arseshole, completely, but…” You swallowed, allowing yourself to think of him, just this once. “He’s also one of the kindest people I know.”
Lucas smiled, satisfied. “I’ll take your word for it,” he said.
He paid the bill, and batted away every attempt you gave to pay half of it. As the two of you left the restaurant, Lucas put his arm out for you. You took it graciously, and the two of you walked back into town together. He walked you to your door as you continued your conversation, and when he rose up the steps to your building, he gently let your arm go.
“I had a really lovely time tonight,” he said.
“Me too,” you smiled. You meant it.
“I’d really like to see you again,” he said strongly, before he backed up slightly. “Only if that was something that you wanted, as well, of course.”
You were already laughing by the time he’d finished. “I would love that, yes.”
“Great,” he said. “I’ll call you?”
You nodded, and he nodded too, both of you smiling like two school children who’d just discovered crushes on the other. As he left, you watched him walk away and around the corner. You felt giddy, you felt content, and you couldn’t believe it had all gone so well. Part of you was certain it was all too good to be true, but you followed Keeley’s advice as you entered your flat. You told yourself not to overthink it, to let yourself have a good time, to embrace something going well for once.
Even so, as you got ready for bed at home, your mind kept flashing back to Roy. He was part of you, and it was impossible to ignore it all. As much as you shouldn’t have, you felt guilty. You and Roy had never been a thing, never gone there, yet you felt like you’d betrayed him, almost. The happiness from your beautiful evening quickly descended into sadness. You’d never felt more lonely than this, despite having a lovely meal with a gorgeous man.
You dropped yourself onto your sofa, and brought out your phone. Quickly, you clicked on Roy’s name and began typing out a message. You sent it before your slightly drunk self could take it back, choosing to be honest with him for once in your life.
I miss you.
As the season kicked off, you focused on work. You applied yourself generously, and were hanging out with your colleagues in the city even more so. You took Keeley’s and Ted’s advice on board– you opened yourself up to more. You went on a few more dates on Bantr, including a second date with Lucas, over the next few weeks.
None of them had worked out well, apart from Lucas himself. He’d kissed you after your second date, and you’d had to tell yourself not to invite him into your flat for a drink. You didn’t want to rush it all, didn’t want to dive into something that you were enjoying at this pace. Despite being in need– desperately, if you were being honest– you held yourself to a higher standard than that. Not that there was anything wrong with having fun and sleeping around, but you were out of practice. You’d rather sleep with someone you knew a bit more, before jumping straight in.
Lucas seemed fine with that, too. He made an active effort to call you occasionally, and you’d both talk about work or your plans or your friends and family. He made you laugh, and that was a big green flag in your eyes.
“So, when are you going to fuck?” Keeley said, and you scoffed abruptly. You both sat in the owner’s box at the Dogtrack, watching Richmond’s third match of the Championship season. July was well and truly over, as the second week of August had just begun.
Still– nothing from Roy. You’d stopped caring to count the days.
“Not everything has to be about sex,” you hit back.
“Sure, I know that. But if he’s really as gorgeous as you say, why the fuck haven’t you yet? Are you playing hard to get?”
“Absolutely not. If anything I probably reply too fast to his messages,” you said. “I just… I don’t want to rush. We’re having fun, and he’s lovely, and– I just don’t need to worry about when sex is going to happen or not happen.” You made yourself believe the words you were saying, but you were definitely lying.
Keeley saw straight through you. “It’s going to happen on your next date, isn’t it?”
“God, I fucking hope so,” you burst. “It’s been over a year for me, you know.”
“A year? Like– a calendar year?”
You nodded severely, like it was the worst thing in the world that you hadn’t been dicked down in over 365 days. Since moving to Richmond, you’d never had the opportunity to, if you thought about it. You had your work colleagues, who overlapped as your friends. Shitting where you ate was always a bad idea, especially with a bunch of footballers. As much as they were all gorgeous in their own ways, you couldn’t imagine sleeping with any of them– well, except…
“What about Roy?” Keeley’s tone changed to something much softer. Her gaze hit you gently, and her eyes told you it was okay to open up to her. “You didn’t ever… you know.”
You frowned as soon as she brought him up. You shook your head, not knowing what else to say. When Roy was brought to your attention now, all you felt was anger. Red, burning rage, penetrating deep into your bones. Your prior loneliness and sadness had turned to being pissed off.
“No. We never did.” Your voice was blunt, plain, so devoid of anything other than severity, that you hated the way you sounded. You let out a sigh, and told yourself to push forward. “He’s a footballer, Keeley. And you know exactly what he’s like. Maybe I thought something was there, but it’s been three fucking months. He hasn’t contacted me at all, and honestly– I’m done with it.”
Keeley quickly dropped her hand into your lap, clutching her fingers over your own. She smiled at you. “Screw him. You’re so much better than you were last month, so fucking screw him.”
You smiled at her, feeling your anger dissipate. You were lucky to have her, Keeley, because she wholeheartedly understood you. She supported you, and held you when you needed to be held, and yelled encouragement at you when you needed it, too. It was then, as Richmond failed to score a goal, and subsequently performed their third tie of their season so far, that you couldn’t wait for her to meet Lucas. Maybe this would turn into something great, if you only let yourself fall into it.
A week later, across the green and beyond his neighbourhood, Roy stared at his phone for the umpteenth time that day. He had no new messages, no missed calls, not even any notifications from Dominos or Pizza Hut. He counted the days in his head– thirty-four– since you’d last contacted him. That message, the last one you’d sent him, saying you missed him; he still found his gut coiling and his chest compressing when he thought about it.
As he oversaw his under 9’s girls football team on the pitch, he slotted his phone back into his tracksuit. This was all getting to be too much for him– missing you, avoiding Richmond, growing out his fucking hair– but he couldn’t seem to shake himself out of this after-retirement slump.
He regretted the conference. Putting his heart on the line at the end of his career, bursting into tears behind the microphone and in front of the press. You’d messaged him about that, too, saying that you were proud of him, that you wanted to see him, that it’d been a while. Even so, he couldn’t bring himself to respond. He was a prick, he knew that more than anyone, and the fact that he was actively avoiding you and other people who gave a shit, made him feel even worse about it all.
It only made him want to stay away more.
Maybe he could coach these under 9’s for the rest of his life, and live in seclusion, only interrupted by his yoga mums and an occasional glass of rosé.
He entered his house that evening, grabbing a beer as soon as he did. He popped off the top, and glugged back a few gulps. The evenings were bright in summer, and it only made his house feel emptier. He glanced around his living room, skimming his eyes over his overflowing bookshelves, when he caught a look at your article.
He’d framed it, and placed it in the middle of his homemade cards from Phoebe. As much as it stung him to look at now, it was a reminder of you. Those months together at Richmond, his final game, all of it. He thought of it all more often than he wanted, as his mind roamed and landed upon things that only made him feel worse. Going from playing football everyday to this was a big change. It hurt his heart profusely, but he knew it was partly his own doing.
He’d cut himself off from everyone, shut himself away for the foreseeable future. In some ways, he felt he deserved it. He’d battered away every attempt at people to reach out. You, Ted, Keeley; their names sat in his phone with messages from over a month ago that he’d never responded to. He gulped back more of his beer as he started getting angry at himself, and a split second decision had him finishing his drink and grabbing his house keys. He left his empty house and headed into town, as the sun still shone high over Richmond.
You hugged Lucas as you approached the bar, and your table outside. He kissed you on the cheek affectionately, before he pulled out your chair. You sat, and he confidently waved over a waitress to take your drink orders.
This was nice. Your third date, and neither of you could get enough of the other. You sipped on wine and talked about your daily lives, sharing jokes over some olives, as the sun skittered across the lush outside space of a central Richmond bar.
“How are they doing?” Lucas asked, popping an olive into his mouth.
“Not good,” you said. “They’ve tied three games in a row. Not the best after relegation, really.” You shrugged, picturing Sam’s sullen face after the game last week.
They were all so tired, all so capable, but they’d lost Roy. It was doing a number on all of them. They missed their ex-captain.
“Hm, that’s a shame. What do you reckon is holding them back?” he asked.
You often felt giddy when Lucas asked you about football. He listened to what you had to say, took on board your points, and thought you knew a lot more about the sport in general. It was a welcomed change from what the guys at the club had thought of your knowledge.
“Lots of things, I suppose,” you said, taking a sip of your drink before you started. “Having Ted and Beard was always going to be a learning curve, but that wasn’t the reason for their relegation. Jamie Tartt was taken back by Man City a few months before the end of their previous season, which drastically made things worse, amongst other things.”
Other things being Roy.
“Other things?” Lucas said, and you wished he hadn’t.
You were trying this thing where you didn’t bring up Roy when you didn’t need to. It had helped you a lot so far, over the past few weeks, and kept your moods happier in general. When you thought of him, it was often difficult to get him out of your mind again. It only ever reminded you of the past few months of silence, and no one needed to be in the firing line for that– except him.
Nevertheless, you sucked in a breath, and drank a large gulp of your wine, before you forced yourself to continue. “Well, their final game of last season. Other than the loss, and the relegation itself, they were definitely shaken up by–” You stopped, but not because of anything in your mind.
Your heart catapulted into your throat when your eyes focused on him. Black t-shirt, black leather jacket, black jeans. His hair had grown out. He looked scruffy, and unkempt, and all the things that he hadn’t only a few months ago. You noticed his limp first, next to the steely gaze that he shot to the world around him.
“Roy.” His name burst from your mouth.
He was fast approaching, about to pass the bar, and you didn’t want him to spot you. You weren’t in the mood to see him now. You wanted to enjoy your date, and get laid afterwards, and not think about him ever.
Lucas hummed and nodded. “Oh, yeah. Losing Roy must have been a big change for them, you’re right.”
“No– uh,” you said, suddenly leaning forward to clutch onto Lucas’s arm. “Can we go inside? I suddenly have a really bad chill.”
Lucas widened his eyes at you in concern, but he didn’t seem to catch on. “Really? It’s still quite warm. I can grab you a blanket, would that help?” he suggested. God dammit he was so considerate, and kind, but you didn’t think a blanket would fix this. Panic set in tenfold.
You rethought your escape plan. “I– I’ll go to the loo, and grab one on my way out,” you said frantically, standing up far too quickly.
Your leg hit the table abruptly, sending a sharp pain through your kneecap. You squeaked, and your glass toppled over suddenly. It was too late to be stopped, as it fell from the table and smashed upon the floor. Glass shards littered the concrete, and your presence was alerted to everyone at the bar, and beyond.
Lucas got up swiftly, and clutched your arm. “Are you okay?” he asked, worried.
“Yeah, I just–” You looked up, and you froze.
Roy Kent stopped walking, as his eyes focused on your face. You felt your blood boil uncomfortably beneath your skin, as his gaze took in the panicked expression on your brow. The jig was up. He’d spotted you, due to your utter clumsiness, and a wave of upset ravaged in your chest.
The first thing Roy thought when he saw you, was how much you were glowing. You hadn’t glowed like that in a while, not unless he counted the night of the charity ball, or when you’d interviewed him in his dining room. The sun settled over your shocked expression, a look that should have made you look scary, like a deer in headlights, but it only made his heart lurch.
There was a man before you, clutching onto your arm as he asked you if you were okay again. He rounded the table and held you close, and as he did you finally looked away. You smiled at him, clearly embarrassed that you’d broken a glass and whacked yourself. That look was one that Roy recognised– you’d looked at him that like many times before.
This is what he’d allowed himself to pass by. You, and drinks in the summer, chatting over a bowl of olives as you swished a straw into a spritzer or got froth on your upper lip from a beer. He was a fucking idiot. Roy told himself this was it. He could either go over, and get you back– get it all back– or he could miss this opportunity and never fucking try. When he started walking again, you snapped your gaze back at him in warning.
Roy chose to ignore it.
You could’ve punched him.
“What was that all about–?” Lucas said, as he followed your gaze. He stopped short as soon as he saw Roy, and smiled excitedly as he looked back at you. “Is that… Roy Kent?”
You inhaled sharply, deeply, trying to calm yourself down as a wave of anger rose from within you. “Yes. Yes, it is,” you said, giving up. There was a look on Roy’s face that you knew well, that fake smile that he put on for people, when he was pretending to be a joking version of himself.
“What a coincidence!” Lucas exclaimed.
You hummed, trying to keep your tone light. “Massive,” you said bluntly.
As Roy stepped towards you both, you felt your chest crumble ever so slightly. Lucas peered at him like an awestruck kid. This was the last thing you’d ever wanted to fucking happen.
Roy gestured to the broken glass on the floor. “Think you dropped something.”
“Thanks for the heads up,” you said, as you inhaled his words for the first time in three months. Alongside your anger, you felt your throat start to close. Seeing his face again after so long was a hit.
“Roy Kent,” Lucas said happily, sticking his hand out. Roy shot you an amused look as he leaned in and shook it. “Big fan. I’ve heard a lot about you from this one,” he said, gesturing to you affectionately.
“Have you now?” Roy said. The sweet way he was talking was all a farce. He was playing nice for your sake, but you had a horrible feeling that he was going to go overboard.
“Yes. All bad things,” you said, smiling sarcastically. Lucas laughed loudly, and Roy smiled overenthusiastically, like someone at a pantomime performance. It was incredibly off-putting, and made you feel slightly sick. It was probably overlaid from the deep panic you felt in your gut, amongst other things.
Roy and Lucas parted. As they did, Lucas peered down at you. He took one look at your face– your gaze stuck on Roy bluntly and trying not to scream– and utterly misinterpreted your emotions. “Would you care to join us for a drink?” he asked Roy.
You sucked in a breath. “Oh, no, he’s–”
“You know what,” Roy cut over you. “I’d love to.”
After a year of knowing him, you knew this was it– this would finally be the time you punched Roy Kent in his fucking face.

"Good mornin' boss!" Ted says, happy as ever on his usual morning stroll into Rebecca's office. "I got you your favorite!"
"Good morning Ted, thank you!" Rebecca says as she eagerly grabs the little pink box from his hands.
"I also got a little extra today for that beautiful wife of yours!" Ted places a second pink box onto Rebecca's desk.
"Oh Ted, how kind! She is going to love them!"
"Don't mention it boss. Although I gotta say, I know we were all at the wedding and all, but I'm beginning to think the whole thing was just a ruse and that she don't actually exist." Rebecca gives Ted a look and he chuckles. "You two have been married for how long? And I've only met her twice, including yall's nuptials."
"Well Ted, we've been very busy, and now that the baby's due date is coming up things have been even busier."
"Ya'll should come to the game this weekend! I know the baby is due soon but it'll give you both the chance to hang out and have some fun before the real fun starts!"
"Ted, I don't know-"
"I ain't takin' no for an answer unless she calls me and tells me no herself!"
"Alright Ted, I will speak to her about it tonight."
"Alrighty then! Catch ya on the flipside, boss!"
As you're laying on the couch, flipping through channels, you're beginning to realize that there's nothing good on tv anymore. No more good shows to just throw on when you're bored. Luckily, right before you feel like you're about to die from boredom the front door opens.
Rebecca walks into the house and closes the door, immediately kicking off her shoes and hanging her coat on the coatrack. Looking up, she sees you slowly sitting up on the couch.
"Hello there my love." She says with a warm smile.
"Hi baby, how was your day?"
You go to stand up and it takes you a few tries before you can even begin to pull yourself up off of the couch.
"Be careful! Here, let me help you." Rebecca says, rushing to your side.
"I'm okay baby, don't worry."
Rebecca helps you stand and cups your face in her hands.
"I know my love, but I can't help but worry."
Even without shoes on, Rebecca towers over you, so you get up on your tip toes and softly kiss her.
"You're adorable."
"Never more adorable than you."
A slight blush creeps across your cheeks and you wrap your arms around her and hug her tight. Damn hormones.
"How was your day?"
"The usual, busy as always. Oh! Before I forget-" Rebecca walks away from your grasp and you pout. She grabs her purse and walks back over to you after pulling out a little pink box. "Ted made an extra box of biscuits just for you."
"Aw! He shouldn't have-" you open the box and the sweet scent of biscuits fills your nose. "Oh my god." You moan and your eyes roll back a little. "These smell amazing."
Rebecca looks at you with a smirk on her face.
"What?"
"I've never seen anyone or anything other than me make you make that face before." She says with a wink.
"Rebecca Welton!"
Rebecca laughs and pulls you in for a kiss.
"I love you."
"I love you too."
"Oh, and Ted was on my case once again about meeting you and invited you to the match this weekend, but I told him it probably wasn't going to happen."
"Why not?"
Rebecca looks a little surprised.
"Well I know how tired you've been and the baby is due soon and I don't want to overwhelm you."
"You're adorable, but I would love to go see a match. It would be nice to get out of the house for a little while anyway."
"Are you sure? You don't think it'll be too much?"
"Baby I'll be fine, I promise. Let's go and have some fun."
Rebecca gazes into your eyes and you feel like you've fallen in love all over again. Her emerald green eyes pull you in so deeply you forgot where you were for a moment. You're brought back to earth when she leans down and gently kisses you.
The rest of the week flies by and before you know it, it's game day. It's also two weeks before your due date, something that both you and Rebecca are so excited about, but you can tell her anxiety is starting to sky rocket.
"Are you sure you're okay with going? There's some stairs and a little bit of walking, the seats aren't comfortable and we'll be in them for a few hours." She rambles on while pacing back and fourth.
"Baby," you say, trying to pull her out of her spiral, but she doesn't stop. "baby!" Rebecca finally stops and turns towards you. Walking up to her, you cup her face with your hands and look deeply into her eyes. "Everything will be fine, don't worry, okay? We're going to go, have a wonderful time, come home and go right to sleep, okay? I'll be fine, I promise."
Rebecca stares back into your eyes for a few moments before nodding her head. You pull her down and bring her in for a kiss. Her body relaxes into yours when your lips meet and she lets out a peaceful sigh.
"Ready?"
"I'm ready when you are my love."
The two of you get into the car and head to the stadium. You both decided to get there a little early to say hi to everyone since you've only met most of them once or twice before.
Rebecca leads you into the locker room and the room goes silent when she walks in.
"Good afternoon boys, good luck out there today! I want to introduce you all to my wife, y/n."
As if it was rehearsed, all of the boys greet you at the same time.
"Hi everyone, it's great to finally meet you all!"
"Well I'll be darned! You sure do exist!" Ted says as he walks out of his office. "You owe me 20 bucks." He says to Coach Beard who pulls out a £20 and slaps it into Ted's hand.
"Hello Ted, you remember y/n, y/n, you remember Ted."
"How could I ever forget my favorite boss' wife?!" He says as he pulls you in for a hug. "How're ya feelin'? You're due soon, right?"
"I'm feeling really good. I feel gigantic, but good. And yes, the due date is two weeks from today actually!"
"Well how about that! Coach Beard, get over here!" Coach Beard walks over to the three of you and he nods at Rebecca, who nods back. "Coach, you remember y/n, right?"
"Could never forget her. How are you?"
"I've been good!"
"Hey! Roy! Nate! Get your butts over here and welcome our guest of honor!"
Roy and Nate walk over and you all greet each other. You only met Nate one other time, at your wedding. He's sweet but very nervous, but in a cute way almost. Roy you've met a bunch of times, you, Rebecca, Roy and Keeley have gone on your fair share of double dates over the last few years and you've gotten to know him quite well.
Rebecca introduces you to some of the players, some of them comment on how you're glowing. One player, Jan Maas, says something about how large you look and every one of his teammates groans and throws their towels at him. That made you laugh so hard you almost peed yourself.
After mingling for a little while, Rebecca brings you out to the stands to your seats. Keeley and Higgins eventually join you and before you know it, the match it starting.
As the boys play, the crowd goes wild. Both teams are giving it their all and it quickly turns into an intense match. Richmond shoots and the other teams goalie just barely knocks it away. The other team takes the ball across the pitch and shoots. Zoreaux dives, catching it in a perfect save.
Just before half-time Colin has the ball and is running down the pitch, he passes it to Jamie who looks like he's about to kick the ball into the goal but instead kicks it across to Sam who sinks it into the net.
The crowd goes wild, all four of you jump out of your seats in excitement as chanting rings out into the stadium.
Half-time comes and goes and the match starts up once more. Both teams come back with a fire in their hearts and play with even more passion than they had in the first half. Jamie gets possession of the ball and sprints to the other end of the pitch, right before he's about to score a player from the other team slide tackles him and kicks the ball away to his teammate.
A collective "ohhh" echoes through the crowd and you feel a cramp in your abdomen that causes you to bend forward a little.
"Are you okay?" Rebecca says, her eyes instantly filling with worry.
"Yeah, I'm fine baby, I promise."
A few minutes later, another cramp appears and you take a deep breath as you breathe through it. Rebecca looks at you with concern and you give her a reassuring smile. The two of you turn your attention back to the intense game and she grabs your hand, giving it a squeeze. You can tell just by the way she's gripping onto your hand that she's nervous, when you look over at her you can see her thoughts going a million miles a minute.
Just as you're about to comfort her, another, much stronger cramp hits and you double over gasping for air. Before anyone can react you feel a gush between your legs like you just peed yourself.
"Oh shit."
"What? What's wrong? What happened?" Rebecca says in a panic.
Looking over at Rebecca you see worry and fear painted across her face. It breaks your heart a little seeing her so scared.
"I'm okay, but don't panic, alright?" Rebecca stares at you silently and you grab her hand. "I'm fine, however, I'm pretty sure my water just broke."
"WHAT?!"
"NO FUCKIN WAY!" Keeley yells.
"Rebecca! Baby, calm down, it's okay!"
"I knew we shouldn't have come here, god damnit."
"Hey, hey, listen to me." You say, cupping her face. "Look at me, it's okay. Everything is okay. The match isn't why this is happening-"
"But you're not due for another two weeks!"
"It's okay, remember what the doctor said? I can go into labor as early as 38 weeks and that's totally normal. Okay?"
Rebecca nods her head with her eyes still filled with worry. Another cramp, which you're pretty sure is a contraction at this point, hits.
"Shit!" You say, grabbing Rebecca's hand. Breathing through it, Rebecca rubs your back and gives Keeley a worried look. Once it passes you look back up at Rebecca. "Everything is fine, however, we should definitely go to the hospital now."
"Yes, you guys go, we'll take care of everything else here, right Higgins?" Keeley says.
"Yes! Of course!"
"Right, yes, okay. Come on, let me grab your things, uh- my jacket, shit, my purse-" Frantically, Rebecca grabs both of your things and helps you stand up. She leads you out of the stadium and into the car and the driver takes you to the hospital.
The labor was long and painful but once they placed the epidural the pain was much easier to deal with. After the doctor came in to examine you again she said it was time to push.
With your legs in the stirrups and Rebecca's hand in yours, you begin to push. Every time you felt that now familiar pressure you pushed, you felt like you were going at it for hours, even though it had only been thirty minutes.
Exhaustion begins to take over and you feel yourself losing steam. You lay back for a minute to take a breath and Rebecca looks into your eyes.
"You're so close my love, she's almost here. Just a little more. I'm so proud of you, you're doing such an amazing job." She gently brushes a strand of hair out of your face and smiles at you. After a minute you feel the pressure again and push harder than you have before.
Just when you think you can't keep going, the most beautiful cry rings out into the delivery room. As you lay back the doctor places the baby in your lap and they dry her off. Carefully, you bring your hand to her head and caress her with your thumb. Rebecca's grip on your arm tightens and you look over at her to find that she has tears streaming down her face.
The nurse whisks the baby away and you reach up and wipe Rebecca's tears away.
"She's perfect." She whispers.
"She is." You say with a smile.
After a few minutes the nurse comes back with the baby and hands her to Rebecca. Moving over to Rebecca can sit next to you, she claims the spot and looks down at your daughter with wonder in her eyes.
The next few days were a whirlwind, learning how to breastfeed and to get the baby to latch, recovering from giving birth, just adjusting to the new life the two of you stepped into. It's been chaos but also beautiful.
As you're laying in bed with the baby in your arms, Rebecca is sitting on the recliner reading her book. Everything is peaceful and for the first time since giving birth, you're both actually relaxed. A knock on the door takes your attention away.
"Knock knock!" You hear, accompanied by a distinctive southern accent.
"Ted! What are you doing here?" Rebecca says, getting up from her spot.
"Well I heard we got a new member to our Richmond family and Beard and I couldn't say no to givin' 'em a visit!"
Coach Beard steps into the room along with Keeley, Roy, Higgins and a few other players from the team.
"How did you manage to get so many people in here?"
"Southern charm goes a long way in these parts." Beard says.
The baby gets passed around a little, Beard and Roy both declining the opportunity to hold her. The second the baby is placed into Keeley's arms she sobs and sinks into the chair Rebecca was sitting in. It came as a surprise to no one that the second Keeley got her, no one else got to hold her for the rest of the visit.
The team brought lunch, something you were grateful for because you were sick of hospital food at that point.
Beard comes into the room with extra chairs, where he got them from, you have no idea but no one dares to question it.
Everyone takes a seat and you all eat lunch together. This is the most one-on-one time you've spent with everyone. Even though it's kind of weird that it's happening in the hospital after you give birth, it was nice really getting to know everyone finally.
As everyone was finishing up their lunch, the nurse comes back in and it taken back by how many people were in the room.
"Hello everyone!" She says.
"Howdy, I'm Ted Lasso, great to meet ya!" Ted says, getting up to shake her hand.
"I'm Rose, y/n's nurse, there are a lot of you in here, wow."
"Yeah, well, ya know, southern charm still goes a long way overseas."
"I can see that! Unfortunately, the lactation nurse will be here in a few minutes so I'm going to have to ask everyone to leave."
"Oh sure, not a problem at all, right team?" Everyone nods. "Well, we'll get outta your hair."
Everyone starts to say their goodbyes and Keeley tries to walk out with the baby before Roy stops her. Reluctantly, she turns around and hands you your daughter.
"Auntie Keeley loves you so much." She says with tears in her eyes and gives her a kiss on her head. "You guys made the cutest fucking baby I've ever seen."
"Congratulations boss, y/n, she sure is a beauty." Ted says.
"Thank you, Ted." Rebecca says and gives him a hug.
"Thanks Ted, she's perfect." You say, looking down at the infant in your arms.
"I'll catch ya'll later!"
After another day in the hospital, you're finally discharged and able to go home.
Rebecca carries the car seat inside and the two of you take the baby up to the nursery.
After you take the baby out of her car seat, you sit on the rocking chair and feed her before laying her in her crib. After the baby is fed, Rebecca takes her and lays her in the crib. She fusses for a minute and Rebecca starts to softly sing.
You wrap your arms around Rebecca while she sings to the baby and you rest your head on her chest. With on hand gently caressing the baby's cheeks, Rebecca wraps her other arm around you and pulls you tightly into her. As she sings, the baby calms down and within a few minutes she's asleep.
Standing there with your wife, watching over your new daughter as she sleeps, you're the happiest you've ever been.
Rebecca brings her hand to your chin and tilts your face up towards her.
"I love you."
"I love you too, Rebecca."
She leans down and places a soft but firm kiss on your lips. Nothing could ever take away the love and joy that's filling your heart right now.

just had the WORST day so naturally i'm thinking about it causing reader to blow up/be jealous over ted and making up after, if you feel like writing it
Oh no! I'm sorry you had a rough day. I could see this. We all get snappy when we have a rough go, right? Ted would understand -- and find the jealousy endearing a bit. So let's gooo!
---
Relationship: Ted Lasso x reader (f)
Warnings: Angst, making up, light smut
---
You and Ted trudged out of the house after a rough day, to see Sam's restaurant opening.
Like a father figure, Ted was proud of Sam. He put so much work into his restaurant, business, and heritage cuisine, and he couldn't wait to support it.
You were excited too, but your day had beat you up mentally and your mood was anything but delightful. Regardless, you dressed up and pushed it aside to see the Richmond family and enjoy a night out with Ted.
The two of you were greeted with hugs. Ted and Beard chatted, and Keeley and Rebecca peeled you off to catch up.
Rebecca ordered a drink, and one for you. To your relief. You just wanted to relax.
"What's wrong, babes?" Keeley asked, noticing your face painted with worry and exhaustion.
"Just a rough day at work. I'm trying to unwind, and I didn't have much chance by the time Ted got home and we came here."
"I'm so sorry, that's hard. Well, let's do our best to enjoy the night, yes? A mini girl's night."
You smiled and took a drink, and then froze when Sassy walked in the door. She headed directly toward Rebecca and waved at Ted in the process with a flirty flick of her wrist.
"Hi girls, what's our poison tonight?" Sassy asked, reaching for a shot glass from a tray.
"The Marlboro man is looking good tonight, might need a snack on that later, yeah?" she added with a big smile, making Rebecca and Keeley's eyes go wide.
She clearly doesn't know you're together.
"Hey there, Sassy Smurf," Ted says, wandering over to your little circle. Sassy flashes a brilliant smile.
"Marlboro man, as I live and breathe," she answers, her hand running down his chest. You can see him hitch at this, unsure how to move the conversation along.
Ted's eyes ping-pong to you. And you try to stifle a deep breath of anger.
Ted slowly moves her hand off his chest and smiles amicably
"What's new in Sassy's world?"
Sassy starts talking and chattering away. Your stomach is still in knots at her boldness. Ted didn't even stop to tell her you're together.
Your anger moves from Sassy to Ted, who's still joking and jovial with her, and she keeps putting her hand on his arm. And he doesn't do anything about it.
He has to know what she's doing. He has to.
As Ted and Sassy seem to drift away from the rest of the group, Rebecca leans in. "Don't worry about her, y/n. Ted won't let anything happen. He's just nice, you know how he is..."
You could crush your champagne glass in your hand right now.
Sassy says something that makes Ted laugh, and your stomach churns in jealousy. Then his eyes go wide, he shakes his head. Sassy protests. Ted apologizes, his hand on her arm.
What is happening over there?
As you turn to order another drink, Sassy sidles up beside you.
"Well, damn. Thanks for taking the Marlboro man off the market," she jokes, flashing you a toothy smile.
"I'm... yeah..." you can't speak, you're so... hurt? Offended?
Feeling absolutely abysmal.
"Hope I broke him in enough for ya," Sassy jokes, downing a shot and walking away.
Tears prick your eyes. Beside feeling tired, now you feel... shitty. Shitty about yourself. Shitty about your relationship. Shitty about this night. It's getting hot in here. It feels like it's too loud.
Outside. Get outside.
You make your way to the door to take a breath of fresh, crisp air. Inside, you see the girls having fun. Ted approaches the group, confused. He must be asking where you are.
"Darlin'?" Ted asks, stepping off the front stoop of the restaurant.
When he finds you leaning against the wall, your face wet with tears, he worries.
"Hey, hey... are you okay?" he asks hushed, quiet, approaching gently.
Your eyes narrow as you glare at him.
"Why didn't you tell Sassy we're together?"
Ted's eyes bunch. "What?"
"When Sassy waltzed in, she was flirting so hard with you, you could cut the tension with a knife. And you didn't tell her we were together."
Ted stutters.
"I... I don't know, I was..."
"Don't lie, Ted. You were just keeping her on the hook. God, why didn't I see it. Of course, you can't let Sassy go! What man could?!"
Ted watches you with his mouth agape, he's not really sure what to tackle first to calm you down, bring you back to earth.
"I don't know why I thought this would work. Why I thought you'd be different than everyone else. You may as well just let me go. I may as well go pick up my stuff from your flat and just..."
Ted steps toward you, pulling your wrist and bringing you into his chest, where he wraps his arms around you.
"I don't know why you didn't say anything to her..."
Ted soothes you, running his hand down your head, down your back, gently and softly.
"I did," he answers. "Rebecca did. We all did. She knew. Sassy's just...Sassy."
You protest. "What does that mean?!"
Ted smiles. "It means she's a rascal. She likes to play around. Flirt. But I wasn't bitin' on it. And I told her...that I'm in love with you."
You pull back and look into his deep eyes, yours watery and red.
"You told her what?"
"I told her I'm in love with you."
Love. Love. Love. He hasn't said that yet. You hadn't said that yet.
Your lip trembles. Ted smiles, leaning in to kiss them gently.
"I love you," he says quietly, brushing hair over your ear.
"I...I..." you stammer. "I love you, too."
Ted smiles, cupping your cheek and kissing you. You both breathe hard and heavy, his other hand holding your lower back. The kiss deepens, his tongue running against yours.
He looks at you and smiles.
"How could I be in love with anyone else? How could I want anyone else when I found the best there is?"
You smile. Your heart pounds.
"No, no. I'm not goin' nowhere, not without you, sugar," Ted says, bringing his lips back to you.
The night's getting cooler. The party is still going on, but Ted reads your mind.
"Should we go home? So I can show ya how much I love ya?" he asks, his hand drifting down your back, to your ass, giving it a little squeeze while his lips tickle your neck.
You can't do anything else but nod. "Uh-huh."
Ted hails a taxi back to his flat, and once inside, he scoops you into his arms, tugging your clothes off while you tug his off, backing up into his bedroom, crawling over you, kissing you all over, smiling with you, making love the way he loves to and the way you love to.
He likes to go slow when he knows you've been in a rough place. Your body is tired from a long week at work. Your brain aches from the rollercoaster of emotions.
He holds your hand, kissing your knuckles.
He kisses you, kisses your neck.
He waits until your breath changes just right, the way your body trembles, the way you gently scratch his back... and he knows...
"Yeah, sugar," he murmurs to your ear. "Make ya feel real good..."
His husky drawl, that low voice against you, the way he moans into your skin...
"Beautiful, so beautiful," he rambles. "My girl, my good girl..."
When you kiss him and tell him you love him, his heart could burst. He kisses you again, his hips gaining speed...your legs wrapped around him...
And when you both reach ecstasy, well...
There's nothing better. Not to him. Not to you.
Sure, Sassy was a fun distraction after the hiccups with Michelle. But nothing, no one, compares to being in love with you.
The way you cuddle and burrow against his broad chest in bed when you're done. The way your hands feel on his skin. The way you fit perfectly wrapped against him.
No.
No one could take your place. You're all he wants, all he needs.
Tumblr media

I'm in the feels today apparently! That got very romantic. Good prompt though. Love a little angst, a little self doubt, and a charming Ted Lasso to the rescue. Hope you're well, friend. Hope your day got better.

Confessions to Getting Caught
Ted Lasso x fem!reader
i have no idea what this is, i found this in my drafts and thought ‘what the hell’ and wanted to share this mini drabble that i don’t even remember what i wrote in this lmao
"You're not leaving!" Ted slammed your office door open, startling you and Colin who was there for a session. You whipped your head towards him with a pissed off look on your face.
"Ted!" You hissed, pointing out that you're in a session.
"Oh hell, sorry." Ted just awkwardly stood there, embarrassed. He scratched the back of his head and then waved at Colin, apologizing to him.
"Go outside and give me five minutes to wrap things up." You muttered, shaking your head.
"Yep, gotcha. Sorry." Ted walks back out, shutting the door behind him as he left.
"Sorry 'bout that Colin. Where were we?" You apologized, giving a smile.
Colin went back to talking and you finished your session ten minutes later. Colin kept repeating his mantra as he left your office while a determined look on his face. You gave a stern look to Ted when you saw him standing there with his hands in his pockets.
"I am so sorry. I didn't know you were in a session." Ted apologized again for the third time.
"Please knock next time." You replied, waving him into your office. He walks in and you shut your door behind you.
"So you heard?" You asked, walking up to him while crossing your arms together.
"Yeah I heard. Why didn't you tell me?" Ted was angry which surprised you. He's always so calm and happy.
"I was going to. But apparently it got around before I could tell you." You replied honestly and calmly.
"I won't let this happen! There's no way in hell you're leaving!" Ted yelled, throwing his hands in the air. He walks away from you, running his hands through his hair and down his face.
"Ted.." You spoke softly, "it was bound to happen. I was only hired to stay on till the end of the season. It's the end of the season, therefore there's no reason for me to stay on." You reasoned with him, hoping it'll calm him down a bit.
"I will talk to Rebecca, get her to hire you for another season!" Ted started pacing, "She'll say yes, she will definitely say knowing it's you. We can-" You cut him off and stopped him by putting your hands on his shoulders, turning him to face you.
"Why are you so hell bent on keeping me here?" You whispered, furrowing your brows at him.
"Because.. I don't want you to leave." He sighed, his eyes softening when he looks at you.
"Why? Ted, if this is about therapy, I can give you names of the best people I know around here to take over. You're going to be fine without me." You spoke softly, letting your hands fall to your sides.
"It's not that. It's.. I-I.." He trailed off, trying to find the words to admit his feelings. He never thought in a million years he would find someone who cared for him as much as you did.
Granted, you were his therapist and that's your job, but there was something different about your relationship with him. You were a friend to him and he wanted you to be more than that, even if it meant having to change therapists.
You ignited something in him that he hasn't felt in a long time, and he wanted more. He felt this way since the day of Rebecca's father's funeral. He just didn't realize those feelings until his conversation with the Diamond Dogs a few weeks after. Though they didn't know you were his therapist in which they said to tell you how he felt but he just played it off. He truly couldn't tell you how he felt because he didn't want to compromise anything. He liked how things were and didn't want anything to change. But now? Now, this was his last chance to say anything before you left.
"I like you. A lot. I have feelings that I probably shouldn't be having but I can't help it. I want you to stay because I can't imagine my life without you." He admits, releasing a heavy breath after.
You stood there stunned. You never thought in a million years he would say something like that to you. You had to admit, you had feelings for him for a long time. But, you played it off and stayed professional with Ted and sometimes friends. Close friends. Though you complained to Keeley and Rebecca that you liked him a lot but couldn't say anything. They never understood why you couldn't tell him because you never said anything about being his therapist. So, you just stayed quiet, and let things continue the way they were. Now things were different.
"Ted.." You whispered after realizing you were gaping and he started to get nervous.
"I know you're my therapist and this crosses a lot of lines between us. Now, you don't have to say anything if you don't want to, but I just wanted you to know how I felt. I'll leave you be." He puts his hands in his pockets again and starts to leave.
Before he could reach the door, you walked up to him and turned him around. You stared into his eyes then his lips and back up to his eyes before grabbing his shirt collar and pulled him into a kiss, your lips crashed into his, tickling against his mustache. He grunted lightly at the impact but didn't mind as he kissed you back, deepening the kiss as he did.
You pulled away, breathing heavily and looking down at the floor before looking back up at him, "I feel the same way and I can't imagine my life without you either. I don't want to leave at all because you're here." You whispered, your hands moving up to his face, your thumbs rubbing his cheeks lightly.
"Then don't. Please stay." His arms snaked your waist, pulling you in closer. He softly bumped his forehead into yours and closed his eyes, sighing as he did. You felt his hot breath against your lips, and wanted more right now.
"God, I need you so badly right now." You muttered, and he chuckled before pulling you into a hard kiss. You wrapped your arms around his neck and he picks you up, letting you wrap your legs around his waist and he carried you to the couch. He softly places you down on the cushions, and laid on top, his right knee and elbows holding him up so he wasn't laying completely on top of you.
You continued to make out with him until you were suddenly interrupted by a door opening and a voice talking. You pulled away quickly to see Keeley there but she didn't see you and Ted yet as she was distracted by her phone.
"So, I decided to plan a going away party for you cause I thought why not and holy shit!" Keeley squealed when she finally looked up from her phone to see you and Ted on the couch together.
"Keeley!" You gaped, shocked to have gotten caught by your best friend. Ted gives a confused look after you pulled away then his eyes went wide when he heard you say Keeley's name, quickly turning to see her standing there.
"Hey Keeley!" Ted drawled on, giving an awkward smile when he looked up at her.
"You know what? I can come back! Keep doing what you're doing!" Keeley starts running out of your office, then comes running back in and leans on the door frame, "thank God you two weren't naked, yea? Could've been a lot worse." She giggled and left, shutting the door before she did.
"Knock next time!" You yelled out, sighing when you know she was possibly out of reach to hear you.
"That is embarrassing." You muttered, covering your face to hide the redness that was slowly growing.
"Hey like she said, it could've been a lot worse." Ted crawls off your body and gets up, grabbing your hands to pull you up off the couch.
You groaned that your moment got interrupted, but then you thought it was good it got interrupted. You didn't know where things could've gone if Keeley didn't walk in here.
It would’ve been amazing either way, you knew that for sure.

Welcoming and Stables (2)
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3
Tumblr media
When the sister’s have to visit their father’s horse. Eleanor debriefs to y/n that the horse is on a certain someone’s land. How will Rebecca welcome y/n? How will the visit turn out?
WARNING: hallmark cringe if ykyk, talk of past relationships, subtle angst, grief, a Christmas bakery (yes that’s a warning 😀), also y/n has a child
✩。:•.───── ❁ ❁ ─────.•:。✩
After the sisters said bye to everyone, y/n turned to her sister with a curious expression. “I noticed that our stables are gone. Where’s Storm?” She quipped, opening the car door for her sister first. “Well, dad told us before he…” Eleanor’s voice seemed to trail off, their father was a kind man he always took pride in his daughter’s but he also supported y/n the most in her dreams of being an artist. Eleanor knew the subject was touchy, “It’s alright..continue.”
“Well, you know. He told us to take Storm to…Rebecca. She’s been taking care of her.” El said carefully, y/n’s shoulder’s tensed and her brows furrowed, “What.”
Eleanor shrunk in her seat, y/n continued with a sigh, “I wouldn’t trust her with Storm. I get it she’s good at dealing with horses, but seriously?” She exclaimed, gripping the steering wheel. “I know, but Storm’s healthy and happy. I think it’s alright. Plus, she’s changed!” Eleanor added, trying to lighten the mood.
“Sure, she changed.”
———
Y/n cursed at herself knowing exactly where Rebecca had still lived, she hated the fact that it was like muscle memory. The ranch was…just as beautiful as it was when she had left for New York. The grass seemed even greener. Y/n had drove the the entrance gate, the once paved road now dirt and mud. Finally, parking next to the stables, Ted, one of Rebecca’s employees smiled seeing the girls. “Y/n! You’re back! What brings you here?” He said quite happily, his hand resting in his pockets. “Well, just wanted to visit. Been a while, y’know?” Y/n smiled, Eleanor giggled behind her which sparked a curiosity in y/n. “What?” The youngest sister pointed inside the stables, there stood a all too familiar figure. “Ah, she’s quite grumpy today. Wish you luck!” Ted flashed a smile before walking away. Y/n let out a shaky breath, after all these years, she would see Rebecca again. Walking hand in hand with her sister they approached Rebecca, “Becca!” The blonde looked up and grinned seeing Eleanor, y/n couldn’t help but feel her stomach flutter and her knees buckle.
“Y/n is here from New York!” Eleanor gestered to her sister, Rebecca’s face fell as she looked at y/n. Her cheeks seemed to turn pink ever so slightly, the edge of her lips up turned up into a smile. “Y/n..” Rebecca let go of El to embrace y/n, the familiar warmth bring a sting in her eyes. “You came back!” Rebecca sniffled, y/n couldn’t help but place her head in the crook of Rebecca’s neck. “I promised I would, didn’t I?” y/n said with a teasing tone making Rebecca chuckle, the blonde pecked y/n’s forehead and squeezed her tight once more.
“I’ve missed you”

For the first sentence: It wasn't his fault, Jamie desperately reminded himself.
I couldn’t settle on any one scenario, so uh, have 5 times when it wasn’t Jamie’s fault + 1 time when it very much was. You’re welcome?
You can also read it on AO3.
1.
It wasn't his fault, Jamie desperately reminded himself. Blinking his eyes, blinking away stupid fucking tears, he tried to focus on the road as he took a left turn, exiting Manchester proper.
Dr. Sharon would tell him as much, he was sure. Roy, too, though he’d have to grit the words out between swallowing down all the I told you so:s he’d no doubt be fighting hard not to throw in Jamie’s face.
Dad wouldn’t agree with either of them, of course, judging by the way he’d snarled and wagged his finger in Jamie’s face, unsteadily leaning against the door to the flat Jamie had gotten him once he got out of rehab. “Couldn’t be bothered to get here on Friday like you said you would, could you, son, and what was I supposed to do all by meself all night, eh, just sit around and twiddle me thumbs like a twat?”
2.
It wasn't his fault, Jamie desperately reminded himself. He wanted to say as much, profess his innocence to Roy’s sister as she carefully pushed and prodded at Roy’s knee while Roy bit back enough swears to keep Phoebe in sweets for a year.
After all, it hadn’t been Jamie who decided that they would go for a run; wasn’t Jamie who laid out the route, or decided how far they should go, or how fast.
It had been for his benefit, though. And it’d been him who kept on going, pushing on and on because he wanted to prove a point, wanted to prove to Roy that he could do it, that he wasn’t soft, wouldn’t quit, wouldn’t break.
And in the end, it wasn’t Jamie who broke.
3.
It wasn't his fault, Jamie desperately reminded himself. Or, if it was, it wasn’t only his fault, because that’s what Ted had been going on about, wasn’t it – how Jamie was only one of eleven, and that meant it wasn’t all down to just him if things went poorly, or if they went well.
Hard to fucking remember that, when he saw the defeated looks on his teammates’ faces as they walked off the pitch in the pouring rain and with the other team’s jubilant cheers still in their ears. Hard to remember that when remembering the sitter he’d missed early in the second half was so very easy.
A familiar hand fell on his shoulder, and a familiar gruff voice murmured in his ear: hey, it was a bad game for all of us, it wasn’t just you.
Jamie gave a curt nod, and tried to believe him.
4.
It wasn't his fault, Jamie desperately reminded himself. Yes, it was his birthday, and yes, it was him who’d nagged Roy into coming with him to the club, but it was Roy who’d dragged him out into the alley and kissed him like he wanted to devour him whole, and they’d both been too drunk, on beer and on each other, to notice the wanker with the phone.
“Papers won’t run it until you make a statement one way or the other, but it’s fucking everywhere on Twitter,” Keeley had told them over the phone after all hell broke lose, sounding as apologetic as if she’d been the one to out them. “I’m so sorry, boys, but not even Rebecca can bury this, and believe me, she’s tried, I think she even threatened to have people killed at some point.”
“Well, happy fucking birthday to me,” Jamie told Roy sourly as he tossed the phone aside and curled up closer to the other man. “For this year I got a hairy old boyfriend.”
5.
It wasn't his fault, Jamie desperately reminded himself. Keeley had already told him that, repeatedly and in between emptying her stomach into the loo.
“This wasn’t your fault, Jamie,” she had assured him, face pale and her hair a sweaty mess that he held back for her. “We’ve ordered from that place loads of times, and there’s never been a problem before.”
And that was true, wasn’t it, but it was also true that he’d been supposed to make dinner for them last night, only he’d been running late after shopping with Isaac so he’d picked up curries on the way back and now Keeley was curled up on the bathroom floor instead of getting ready for the weekend trip they’d been planning for ages.
Roy was going to fucking kill him.
+ 1.
“It wasn’t my fault,” Jamie told Roy as innocently as he could manage, but he knew he wasn’t able to fully hide the smirk tugging at the corners of his lips.
“It absolutely fucking was,” Roy told him flatly, wiping uselessly at his stained trousers and shooting the giggling Keeley a reproachful glare. But when he turned his eyes back on Jamie there was a dark glimmer in them. “You’ll pay for this when we get home,” he promised.
Mmm, yes. Jamie was rather counting on it.

(i got this gif off of google-- can't find credit!!)
Chapter 1
“Right then,” She said with a satisfied smirk, “I believe everything is squared away.”
The man in front of her, Rupert Mannion, held a smile, something patronizing and sinister lurking beneath, “Pleasure doing business with you, my dear.”
“I’m sorry, but I do believe your fiance is the one who was doing business with me,” The raven haired woman responded, quickly turning to the much younger woman to his right and shaking her hand, “It’s been a pleasure, my darling. Do take care of that precious little girl of yours!”
And with that, the woman slung her bag over her shoulder, and spun around, her curly locks flipping over her shoulder, “Toodles!” she sang as she swayed out of the room.
“I can’t believe I just sold my own share of a football club to Talia fucking Forrest.”
— One year Prior —
Normally, Natalia wasn’t a nervous person. Rather, she was the type of woman to make others nervous. Yet here she was, clicking her heels across the hard floor of AFC Richmond’s clubhouse, her heart hammering in her chest. Rebecca Welton had sold her some shares of AFC Richmond right after her divorce to royal dickhead, Rupert Manion, making her a minority owner of the club; and as much as Natalia loved football and Rebecca, she was nervous about running into someone in particular.
Her wavy black hair fluffed out around her face, her thick black sunglasses hiding her green eyes. She glanced around her as she made her way towards Rebecca’s office, the hallways buzzing with excitement and gawking glances as she would pass. God, can this walk take any longer, she thought as she ascended the stairs to Ms. Welton’s office, Finally. With a deep breath, Natalia gripped the handle and walked in, offering a small knock as she opened the door. As she opened the door to her office she was greeted with a seemingly very flustered Rebecca in a plush robe, an always frazzled Higgins, and a face she hadn’t yet seen before. Rebecca stepped to the side and lit up when Natalia entered. “God your tits are amazing,” Natalia blurted, eyes going directly to Rebecca’s chest. The gentlemen both cleared their throats and seemed to look anywhere but her chest. “Right, sorry.” “Talia Forrest,” Natalia introduced, reaching out her sharply manicured hand out to the stranger, “minority owner, semi-successful child star turned rock enthusiast and entrepreneur, pleasure.” “Well hi there, I’m Ted Lasso, fresh face on this side o’ the pond,” the man named Ted greeted, his American accent startled Natalia for a moment. The warmth of his voice melting right into her heart creating a soft comfort to her. “Rebecca, you smuggled an American over here?” Talia laughed, a light jab at the two of them. Rebecca laughed nervously, eyes shifting toward the men and back to Talia. “I’m fucking with you, love,” Natalia soothed, “But I do think it’s high time for you chaps to be off, toodles!” She ushered the men out of the door, closing it behind them.
“So,” Natalia sighed, flopping back into the cushions, arms draping over the back of the couch, “I guess this is what all my money has gone to. This gorgeous office and this wardrobe?”
Rebecca’s cheeks flooded with embarrassed blush fiddling with the rack of terribly expensive gowns. Natalia clicked her tongue and got up from her spot on the couch and walked over to Rebecca. She reached up and held onto Rebecca’s face. “You look at me, you tall, strong, impeccable woman,” Natalia said sternly, “You are fit and worthy, these dresses are bloody well lucky to be hugging that gorgeous body of yours. Now let's find the one, yeah?” Rebecca let out a shaky breath and nodded her head, “Thank you.” She whispered, before shaking it off and standing a bit straighter. “Do you want a drink, love?” Natalia asked, making herself comfortable at the minibar in Rebecca’s office.
“A glass of wine, please,” Rebecca nodded, holding onto a golden dress. After pouring herself a whiskey, she handed the wine glass over to Rebecca. “That’s a gorgeous gown, but she’s wearing you, love. We can do better than that, yeah?” “God, why is this so difficult?” Rebecca sighed, a soft whine underneath. “Honestly, woman,” Natalia groaned, rolling her head back. “You’re right, I’m sorry– It’s just–” Rebecca rambled, “It’s just that Rupert–” Natalia got up from her spot after slamming her drink, and stomped her way towards the taller blonde woman.
“Rupert is a right slimy cock, Rebecca. It’s about time you knew it,” Talia said forcefully. “You no longer get to let him dictate your life. This is your event, and you deserve to be the goddess that you are.” She began to shift through the dresses on her own. “Here,” Natalia said matter of fact, “This one will blow everyone away, plus it shows off those sexy arms of yours.”
Rebecca held the gown up to her, admiring the fabric. A sigh of relief and an emptying of a wine glass, and Rebecca seemed to be a whole new woman. A curt nod and she placed the dress in a garment bag. “Right,” Rebecca smiled, “I actually called you here to ask if you would like to be my plus one to the charity gala tonight?” Natalia growled, flinging her head back in exasperation, “Rebecca, you know I don’t–” “Please, Nat,” Rebecca begged, “It’s for the children…” Nat curled an eyebrow and crossed her arms, “Rebecca…” “Nat, this is my first time doing this without Rupert, and I’m just so bloody nervous! Plus, you’ve been a minority owner, it’s about time you show your face around here.” “You know I don’t fuck with the press,” Nat responded firmly, her brows furrowed deep over her eyes. She softened after a moment, “But… I will go to support another incredible woman.” Rebecca’s eyes lit up and she squeezed the smaller woman into a head-popping hug. “Thank you,” Rebecca sighed. “Suppose I need to pick a dress for the night, then,” Natalia quipped while shooting her a pointed look.
Later.
Cameras. So many fucking cameras were flashing, Natalia hated it. She stepped out of the car behind Rebecca, leaving her big sunglasses on. Her hair was styled to look even more wild than natural. She wore a forest green off-the-shoulder gown with a slit up the skirt that went all the way up to her hip. Her tattoos and scattering of freckles covered her pale skin. She made her way towards the red carpet, following Rebecca. As she made her way toward the line for photographs, Natalia was shouldered rather hard by another person walking by. “Oi–” “Watch it!” The two voices barked in unison. Green eyes locked with brown. Natalia could have sworn her heart leaped into her throat and then directly plummeted into her lower belly. The man that towered before her, straightened up a little more. His all black suit caused him to look even larger than he was. “Hi, Roy.”

□♤□♤□♤□♤□♤□♤□♤□♤□♤□♤♤□♤□♤□♤□♤□♤
You always saw the way Rebecca looked at you. It was quite the opposite of how a boss should look at an employee. She always made you nervous. Your knees completely week. Your chest burn. Your body stiff. And face red as hell.
You'd be lying to yourself if you said you didn't have a crush on her. You knew it was wrong, but you couldn't help yourself.
It was time for " biscuits with the boss" hour and ted wasn't at work. He had a terrible flu. So you had his job now. To have biscuits with Rebecca for 1 whole hour. Things could get heated, you thought. The only times you saw Rebecca was at a meeting, ball game or around the office sometimes.
You fixed your hair and exposed your boobs alittle from your v - neck shirt. If she wanted something to stare at you'll give her something to stare at.
You knocked upon her door softly. The gold plate of her name on the door staring at you. "Come in" you heard her say from inside. You went in and closed the door behind you.
"Miss y/l/n what a pleasant surprise!"
Rebecca said closing her laptop to give you her undivided attention. There it was again. She was eye fucking you. He green eyes made it hard to for you to look away.
Swaying your hips you walked up to her desk smiling.
Soon you realized that you haven't greeted her yet.
" ah, yes well ted isn't here so I thought I should take up the job" you said placing the small pink box on her desk. She looked at the box as you carefully placed it down before smiling back up at you.
You returned her smile before turning around to leave. " wait" she called out. You immediately turned back around and was met with the most sinful eyes. You gulped at the way she was now raising her eyebrows and smirking.
" stay" she said softly, but you heard the demand in it loud and clear. "Ms.welton I should really get going" you started to blur out, but her eyes. God thoses eyes made her hard to reject. You gave in and sat in the chair that was opposite her desk.
She opened the box and took out a biscuit. She opened her mouth slowly and placed the biscuit on her tongue, before closing her mouth once more. The moan she released after that was exquisite. You felt you core light up.
At this point tou were just squirming in your seat. "Y/n darling" she cooed. The way your name rolls off her tongue like honey. And oh how her British accent is strong as fuck when she says darling. Her voice ripped you straight from your thoughts as your eyes met her gaze.
"Can is ask you a question?" She said tilting her head to the side to study you more. You humed in approval.
" do I make you... nervous?" She asked, British accent thick as fuck. You paused for a moment. Not sure how to answer her question. Or maybe you just wanna answer it in a smart way.
She noticed the way you hesitated and took it upon herself to speak again.
" do I make you feel things" this time she had the smirk of the devil and eyes of someone who hadn't had sex in over a decade. This question took you out completely. You were stunned. You felt your blood rushing to your head. Your face getting hot.
This feeling kept coming to your core. Your felt your felt clenching around nothing. You were starting to get wet.
"Fuck" you gasp out, rubbing your temples. "Headaches are the worst." You said and she chuckled. "C'mere" she said tapping her thigh. Feeling the headache get worse you just compiled. You straddled her lap, your skirt riding up around your waist.
"Fuck Rebecca- i- i need" you couldn't even think straight. Your mind was blank. All fuzzy.
You weren't thinking straight at all.
" to be fucked?"
" a painkiller" you both said your sentences at the same time. You stared into her sapphire blue eyes, that were hardly visible from how blown her pupils were.
Soon both your mouths were on eachother in a heated kiss. It was both long lasting and short lasting. You moaned into her mouth, her tongue slipped in to explore your taste more.
You could taste the sweet taste of the sugar biscuit she just ate and, the wine she drank while on lunch with keeley.
She was intoxicating. You soon had to pull away from her to catch your breath.
"God you are good" you whispered out of breath. Rebecca cupped your cheek and softly caressed it.
"Tell me you want me y/n" she whispered leaving soft pecks of kisses along the line of your jaw.
You let out a soft moan as she gently started sucking on your neck.
" I don't want you" you said pushing her off you neck do she can look at you.
" I need you Rebecca, really bad, so please fuck me already, please?" You said as you pouted.
In a half of a second Rebecca had you on her desk in a heated kiss again.
She pushes your thighs apart and stands between them. She rolled your shirt up above your hips, leaving her with the view of your nice lacy underwear.
You couldn't help but arch your back into her to feel her closer. You couldn't get enough of this woman. She was like a drug. A drug you know is bad for you but enjoy the way it makes you feel inside.
Her eyes flicked up to your and she smirked at you. You bit your lips to hold back a throaty groaned when Rebecca ripped of your underwear like it was nothing. That was your favorite pair, but to be honest it turned you on.
"Don't worry darling, I'll get you a new pair" she whispered hovering over you. She stared kissing you again, more softly this time. Like she was trying to tell you something special.
Your back arched and your eyes rolled to the back off your head. Rebecca has unexpectedly pushed two fingers into you, curling them as she started a slow but steady paste. You couldn't help but moan into her mouth.
Rebecca couldn't help but look at your blissed out face. squirming beneath her you were a moaning mess. She quicken her paste going deeper.
"OH my god, Rebecca i-" you couldn't even finish your sentence properly, but she already knew what you were saying.
She added pressure onto your clit pushing you over the edge more.
You cried out as your felt the knot in your stomach tie.
" Rebecca can i-" she didn't even let you finish your sentence, her mouth was hungrily on yours.
As she increased her paste in you again, that was it for you. Your back arched off the desk as your thighs were shaking.
Your orgasm hit you like a wrecking ball.
Your eyes were shut tight as you tried to catch your breath.
" I love you" you her Rebecca whispered. You opened your eyes to see her looking at you like a lost puppy who had just re-found its owner.
You pulled her into a deep love long lasting kiss.
After you both fixed yourselves back to your usual attire.
The door slammed open as keeley walked through. Both you and Rebecca's head snapped towards the door.
" finally!" She shouted. Turns out she was standing out there the entire time.

ahhh hello! thank you! hehehe this actually made me really happy to plan and write. i hope you enjoy!
lil lasso - ted lasso
pairing: ted lasso x fem!reader, established relationship
warnings: pregnancy, talks of eating/food
word count: 944
summary: you're hanging things up in the nursery when ted comes home from work. you two have a night in talking about what's to come.
Tumblr media
“Honey, I’m home!” Ted called, presumably from the doorway. You could hear the rustling of his coat as he took it off.
“In here!” You responded, poking your head out from the doorframe. He smiled brightly as he made his way toward you.
You don’t think you’ll ever grow tired of seeing his smile. After long days or weekends apart due to your schedules, it was the thing you most looked forward to.
“I thought the whole point of you stayin’ home was to relax,” he murmured, pulling you into a hug and kissing your temple.
“Oh, I was just hanging up a couple of frames! That’s not gonna hurt me or the baby. Besides, when have I ever been good at that?” You asked, leaning into his touch before flinching away. “Oooh! You’re chilly!”
You put your hands on either side of his face in an attempt to warm him up. He closed his eyes, sighing contentedly as his hands found a place on your waist, pulling you closer to him once more. You loved these little moments you shared.
“Now that feels nice. Can I borrow these for a few minutes?” He asked.
“I don’t see that being a problem,” you laughed. “How was the game?”
“Not too shabby. Think they’re finally startin’ to see eye to eye every now and then. How was your day? You’ve done a lot more in here than hang a couple of frames.” He responded.
You two talked about your days as you led him to the kitchen. It had gotten late—and you had gotten too hungry to wait—so you had made him a plate to heat up when he got home. While he ate dinner, you showered off the day. He was right; you had done more than hang a couple of frames. The paint crusted on your skin gave you away.
What you hadn’t expected upon returning to the kitchen was finding Ted hunched over the oven, pulling out a fresh batch cookies. He wouldn’t be heading back to Nelson Road for a couple of days, so he’d have no need to make anything for Rebecca. Maybe the team?
“You have to go in tomorrow?” You asked, squeezing the water out of your hair one last time before placing the damp towel on the drying rack in the hall.
“Hm?” He lifted his head to look at you. You gestured toward the open oven door.
“Oh! No, just felt like it was a sweet treat kinda night.” He gave you a sheepish smile as he holds a plate out to you.
It smelled like literal heaven. Sweet. Salty. Everything you’d been craving for the last week and a half. You were practically drooling over the smell alone.
“Oh my god. Those smells so good,” You responded, taking the plate and heading over to the couch.
“And I have something else,” he said, walking over to the door.  He picked up a bag that was just out of view. It was white with gold glitter polka dots all over it. The tissue paper poking out of the bag was bubblegum pink. There was no mistaking it as a gift from anyone but Keeley.
“Keeley?” You asked, holding a cookie out to him as he sat down.
“Keeley.” He answered, setting the bag down on the coffee table and taking the cookie from you. “She got us a gift for this one here,” He put his hand on your stomach, rubbing gently.
You grabbed the bag, pulling the tissue paper out to reveal a little AFC Richmond jersey. You picked it up, holding it out to show Ted. When you turned to show it to him, you noticed the lettering on the back. Instead of a player’s name, she’d chosen to write ‘LIL LASSO.’
“Lil’ Lasso! We’ll have to take her and Roy out as a thank you.” You beamed, folding it back up and grabbing another cookie.
You moved to be closer to Ted, leaning up against him. He put his arm around you, setting his hand on your stomach. Neither of you spoke, just enjoying each other’s company. It was comforting to just sit and be together.
“Are you nervous?” You asked, breaking the silence and leaning your chin up against his arm to look at his face.
“Naw, why would I be?” He looked down at you.
“I am,” you murmured, tracing circles on his hand. He flipped it over to squeeze yours.
“You’re already so good with Henry. You may be his step-mom, but he loves you like he loves Michelle. He’s so excited, wanted to be a big brother for as long as I can remember.” He smiled, eyes finding yours.
You had been worried about how you and Ted having a baby would affect Henry. You tried so hard to make sure he felt like family when he was in England. It was hard enough that he only saw his dad during the summers and every other holiday. You didn’t want him to feel further separated from his family. It was nothing short of a relief seeing his face light up as you guys told him. He had run over and given you a hug. Remembering that moment always made you smile.
“He’s gonna be a great big brother.” You said, squeezing Ted’s hand in return as you looked up at him. He smiled down at you, a tendril of hair falling down in front of his face. You leaned away, reaching up to sweep it back into place.
“And you’re going to be a great mother. I just know it.” He responded, pulling you back towards him.

Time, Wondrous Time
The first time Ted Lasso and Rebecca Welton meet is not in her office at Nelson Road in 2020.
No, the first time Ted Lasso and Rebecca Welton meet is in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in 1991.
It had been his mother’s idea to go on the school trip. She had a love of travelling that Ted couldn’t wrap his head around and she wanted to share that with him so he could go and live out some of her dreams for her.
At least, that’s what she said.
Ted knows that the real reason that she sent him off to Amsterdam was to get him out of the house.
It’s funny.
Before everything with his father went down, his mother used to scold him for running around town with his friends, begging him to just stay inside for one night.
Now, she begs at his bedroom door every night for him to come down and eat dinner.
It’s funny in the worst way possible.
His mother had told him that she didn’t want him to miss out on any memories with his classmates and Ted didn’t have the heart to tell her that he didn’t care much about memories. In fact, these days, Ted doesn’t care much about anything anymore.
That’s how he ends up in some museum having a staring contest with some damned sunflowers.
“What did Van Gogh ever do to you?” he hears a British accent pipe up from behind him.
He turns to the source of the sound and finds a girl about his age dressed in a school uniform.
Her blonde hair is tied up in a neat ponytail with a couple of stray pieces framing her face. She’s so tall that he has to check that she isn’t wearing six-inch stilettos. She flashes him a smile and he can see the pink bands of her braces.
His palms grow clammy and he wipes them on his slacks as sneakily as possible.
“Uh…I...” he stammers, “Just don’t really get the appeal of sunflowers, there’s about a bajillion better flowers to choose from.”
She barks out a laugh.
“Is that your real accent?”
His heart sinks.
He should’ve known better. How on Earth would a girl like her, who's probably from some expensive part of England, be into the whole Yankee Doodle situation he's got going on?
Ted simply nods before turning his attention back to Van Gogh and his damned sunflowers.
“I like it.” she says warmly as she walks over to stand beside him, “Where’s it from?”
“Uh, Kansas.” he answers, “What about you? Where are you from?”
“Surrey.”
“Oh, I was just asking where you’re from.” he repeats as he faces her front on, enunciating a little bit more.
She gives him an odd look.
“Surrey… As in South East England.”
“Oh!” Ted exclaims, “I thought you were just saying sorry!”
She laughs loudly, breaking some silent rule or two in the museum as they garner the attention of other patrons.
Ted pays them no mind as he stares at the way she throws her head back chuckling. He smiles when he hears her snort.
“What’s your name?” he asks.
“Becca Welton.”
He offers his hand and Becca accepts it, shaking it firmly like she’s probably been taught in those posh etiquette classes.
“Theodore Lasso.”
In the corner of the room, he sees girls dressed in the same uniform as Becca begin to make their way to an adult holding a clipboard.
“Hey Becca, I think your class might be leaving.”
He points in the direction of the group. As soon as Becca makes eye contact with the group, they begin to motion her over urgently, tapping insistently at imaginary watches.
“Oh, shit, thanks” she answers, “It was nice meeting you, Theodore.”
For a moment, Becca doesn’t make any move to leave despite her words indicating a goodbye. Instead, she stares at his face intensely. For a moment, Ted's worried he broke some cultural norm and Becca is going to sock him in the jaw for it.
Then, she grabs a hold of both of his shoulders and reels him in to press a short kiss to his cheek.
Becca backs away shortly after, burning bright red. She turns away without another word and rushes over to her class, her ponytail flicking back and forth as she goes.
Dazed, Ted brings a hand up to his cheek to feel the sticky imprint Becca’s lip gloss left.
Maybe, Amsterdam wouldn’t be all bad.

I'm thinking about ted after he buys the ring to propose to you and all these moments where he just anxiously holds/plays with the ring in his pocket when your together waiting for the right moment and streaming over it even though he knows you'll say yes 🥰🥺
Oh yes, he would absolutely be so nervous, and excited, but nervous...and then excited again. He'd carry it around a few days for courage, and then he'd save it for the right moment. Let's gooo!
---
Relationship: Ted Lasso x reader
Warnings: Mostly fluff
---
Ted Lasso walked down the sidewalk with his hands in his pockets, whistling a little tune.
He swung by Beard's place to pick him up, Beard waiting with a cup of coffee of course.
"So, did ya get it?" he asks with a grin.
Ted nods. "I sure did, Beardo."
"And?"
"And it's beautiful. The perfect ring for her," Ted answers with a smile.
"Good. So when are you gonna do it?"
Ted tilts his head and thinks. "I haven't decided. Y'know we have that vacation coming up on the beach. Maybe then? Or maybe just at home. I don't know."
"You think she'll say yes?"
Ted stops in his tracks.
"Why'd you ask a thing like that?"
"I dunno, I'm just making sure you're ready, that's all. Don't end up like me and my... [Beard counts on his fingers] three failed proposals."
Ted chuckles, remembering the girls Beard proposed to all those years ago.
"I think I'll be just fine, Beardo. Thanks for askin' though."
He strolls into the Club and takes the ring out of the box while he sits alone in his office for a moment. He looks at it in the light. Imagines how it'll look on your pretty left finger.
Will you cry?
Will you jump into his arms? Oh, he hopes his back is up for that.
Will you say yes right away?
You won't faint, will ya?
"Ted, I have a question for you," Higgins announces as he waltzes into the room, and Ted nearly drops the ring out of his fingers.
"Is that...what I think it is?" Higgins asks, his eyebrows raise and a cheeky smile on his face.
Ted nods. "Yeah, ya found me out there, Higgy Smalls. I'm proposin' to y/n. Haven't decided when."
Higgins approaches and looks at the ring.
"Gorgeous ring. I remember picking up my wife's from the jeweler's. I was so nervous, keeping that on me for so long, like a big secret."
Ted gets a little anxious hearing this. He needs a plan.
...
A few days go by and Ted is still weighing his options. Vacation sounds good, but he doesn't wanna make a scene. You don't like being the center of attention.
He thought about doing it at home, in your flat, but it was more his flat that you just moved in. It didn't feel right either.
He could do it on the pitch, at night, since this is where you met.
"Ted? Did you hear me?" Rebeccca is trying to snap him out of his thoughts.
"Oh, yeah. Sorry, boss. Brain somewhere else."
Rebecca smiles. "I think I know where it was. A little birdie told me you're proposing to y/n. Congratulations."
Ted smiles and blushes. "Yeah, I'm so dang lucky finding her. I just...am tryin' to find the right time when."
Rebecca waves him off. "You'll figure it out. She seems down to earth, I would avoid anything too flashy. Rupert did that to me, and it was so uncomfortable with a crowd."
Ted gulps at this. Well, there goes the beach for sure.
"Thanks for the advice, boss," he says, heading out of her office. "I'll see ya tomorrow."
...
At home, the ring sits in the bottom of his khaki pocket. Maybe tonight's the night?
He watches you fix dinner, dancing and swaying as you listen to music. It makes him smile, coming home to this domestic little life with you.
His fingers fumble with the ring in his pocket. It feels like a million pounds. He just wants to put it on that beautiful hand already...
"Ted? Ready to eat?" you ask, snapping him back.
"Yeah, let's eat, darlin'."
"So, we ready for our big vacation next week?" you ask and smile. You've been excited to get away with just the two of you, rather than a team road game.
"Of course, sugar! It'll be wonderful. Nice to just relax with you, nowhere to go, the ocean breeze..."
You both smile and finish your meal, curling up on the couch to watch TV.
"Not tonight," he thinks.
...
Ted makes a few phone calls before the trip. Little things he wants just right for the room.
When you arrive at the hotel, you're swept off your feet with the luxurious accommodations - recommended by Rebecca, of course - and the view of the ocean.
"This will be a beautiful trip, Teddy," you say, roping your arms around him on the balcony, listening to the ocean.
"Yes it will," he answers. "Especially with you."
Read what happens on the rest of the beach vacation...

THIS WAS SO FUN! I love connecting prompts that weren't related and making them related. This was perfect. And yeah, Ted would be so nervous, and getting all the advice, but not sure what to do. Don't worry, he figures it out. Thanks for the prompt, friend!
