Great Albums is back for a third time! This week, we discuss Dazzle Ships, the avant-garde masterpiece that was so infamously weird, it almost “sank” the pop career of Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. Or did it? As usual, you can find a full transcript of the video under the break, if you’d like to read it instead.

Welcome to Passionate Reply, and welcome to Great Albums. Today, I’ll be talking about an album that many would consider OMD’s best, and many would consider the last great album they ever made: 1983’s Dazzle Ships, their fourth studio LP. It has a reputation that precedes it, as a strange, experimental, and avant-garde album. And I can’t argue with that too much, when it has tracks that sound like "ABC Auto-Industry."

The most obvious thing one can say about Dazzle Ships is that it’s dense and rich with samples. You’ll hear found sounds ranging from a “Speak and Spell” toy to a radio broadcast from Czechoslovakia. It’s a magpie’s nest constructed of garbage and baubles, collage-like and conscientiously artificial. And OMD’s Paul Humphreys and Andy McCluskey managed to make it before sampling became easier and hence more widespread later in the 1980s, thanks to advancements in digital technology. In its own day, it was, famously, a huge flop, baffling even the critics, which makes it tempting to argue that the world simply wasn’t ready for it. Popular legend says that Humphreys and McCluskey were essentially forced to make increasingly soft, pop-oriented music for years afterward, usually at the hands of their label’s higher-ups.

Is that story really true? Well, I don’t know, and I’m not sure if anybody really does. But I think it’s important that we entertain some doubt. Regardless of its actual veracity, this legend is offering us a simplistic narrative of art and capital butting heads, and one that we see repeated all too often in music journalism. It’s a story that expects us to believe that experimental music is good by default, and the natural goal of music and all the people who make it--and, conversely, that accessible music is bad, and anyone who writes a song you can dance to is always after profit, never craft.

Ultimately, though, the most important reason why I’m asking you to leave this question at the gate is that it’s simply a less interesting way to think about art. What I think is truly ingenious about OMD is their ability to combine a pop sensibility with that bleeding-edge experimentation, and vice versa. I don’t think of Dazzle Ships as just an inscrutable, esoteric musical ready-made, but rather something capable of animating and enriching a bunch of otherwise mundane sounds. A word I might use for it is "challenging," because it isn't simply off-putting--it has a certain charm that invites you to stick around and work through it, and you don't feel like it's a waste of your time. I think the underlying pop DNA offered by Dazzle Ships is a big part of that.

In “Genetic Engineering,” the samples from that Speak & Spell are contrasted with a more traditional chorus, which rises above the chaos, stirring and anthemic. It’s a song full of friction, not only between these musical ideas, but in ideas about technology and our future. Like many great works of electronic music, especially earlier in its history, Dazzle Ships is deeply concerned with science and technology, and the ways they’ve structured our world. These guys wrote “Enola Gay” a few years earlier, sure, but there’s much more than Luddite, dystopian thinking here! Dazzle Ships walks a tightrope between romantic adoration of the promise of a better tomorrow, and the tempered uncertainty we’re forced to develop, when we witness the devastation our most horrifying inventions have wrought already. Something that helps sell the former is the motif of childhood: in addition to the Speak & Spell, “Genetic Engineering” also features a children’s toy piano, and prominently references “children” in its lyrics. And “Telegraph,” the album’s other single, sees fit to reference “Daddy.”

Touches like these, and the centering of not-so-new technologies like telegraphy and radio, carry us backward in time. Dazzle Ships has a sense of nostalgia for the technological explosion of the Midcentury, when household technologies were improving in ways that saved time and labour, and faith in “better living through science” was high. It’s not a wistful or introspective nostalgia, but rather one that taps into the bustling excitement of living through that era. That retro styling helps us situate ourselves in a childlike mindset: optimistic, but somewhat naive. Children are highly imaginative, and become enthralled with possibility, but don’t always understand every implication their actions have.

But, as I said, “Telegraph” and “Genetic Engineering” were the album’s singles; the typical track on *Dazzle Ships* sounds more like “ABC Auto-Industry.” The track listing is structured such that these more conventional songs are surrounded by briefer, and more abrasive, intrusions. They become signals in the noise, as though we’re listening to them on the radio--or ships, rising above some stormy seas. Several tracks, such as “International,” also feature a more dissonant intro, on top of that, crowding their main melodies inward.

Over the years, many critics have been quick to contrast Dazzle Ships with OMD’s other albums, but I actually think it has a lot in common with their preceding LP, 1981’s Architecture & Morality, and seems to me to flow naturally from the direction the band had already been going in. Architecture & Morality is a lively mix, with moody instrumentals like “Sealand,” guitar-driven numbers like “The New Stone Age,” and catchy, intuitive pop songs like “Souvenir.” Architecture and Morality proved to be their most successful album, when its title track sounds like this. I fail to see how it’s tremendously different than the title track of Dazzle Ships, which leads us on a harrowing sea chase, with radar pings quickly closing in.

That nautical theme is a great segue to discuss the album’s visual motif. Like all of OMD's first five albums, its sleeve was designed by Peter Saville, most famous for his stunning work for New Order. The cover and title were inspired by a painting Saville had seen, Edward Wadsworth’s *Dazzle Ships in Drydock at Liverpool,* which portrays WWI warships painted in striking, zebra-like geometric patterns. These sharply contrasting “razzle dazzle” designs weren’t “camouflage,” but rather served to confuse enemy forces’ attempts to track them, and predict their motions. Dazzle ships were killing machines that fought dirty...and they were also beautiful. It’s a potent, complex symbol, and it’s a natural fit for an album that’s also capricious, perplexing, and captivating in its uniquely modern terror. Saville’s sleeve design features both a die-cut design as well as a gatefold; peeking through the cover’s “portholes” reveals the interior, where we find a map of the world, divided by time zones. It’s yet another reminder of how technology has reshaped the planet, connecting the human race while also creating divisions.

Earlier, I argued that Dazzle Ships isn’t that different from OMD’s preceding LP, and I’d also suggest that their follow-ups to it aren’t all that different, either. It’s easy to see the influence of Dazzle Ships on their most recent work, made after reforming the group in the late 00s, and informed by the critical re-evaluation and cult acclaim of their alleged masterpiece. But even in the 80s, they basically continued the pattern of layering easy to love, “obvious single choice” tracks alongside more experimental, sample-heavy ones. Compare the title track of their sixth LP, 1985's *Crush.*

Even the greatest of pop hitmakers can't maintain a streak in the charts forever--it's not the nature of mainstream pop charts. Not even in the 1980s, when you could get away with quite a lot of electronic weirdness...at least for a while. Looking back and listening to "Maid of Orleans," it's almost hard to believe it was one of OMD's biggest hits. Is it really less weird than something like "Telegraph"? Perhaps they had simply reached the end of their imperial phase...whether they really had that stern talking-to or not.

It's not so much that Dazzle Ships isn't weird, so much as it is foreseeable that a nerdy, left-of-center band like OMD would have come up with it. Dazzle Ships IS excellent--it’s a Great Album! But it's good enough that I think it deserves to be heard and valued on its own terms. The album is too goddamn good--too compelling, too spell-binding--to be reduced to "that one album the plebs were too dumb to really get." I'm not clearing the air because I think this album is overrated, but because I think it deserves better, deeper discourse than it gets. A truly great album is great whether it sells or it doesn't, right? My advice is to never let art intimidate you, no matter how obtuse people say it is. Send your ship on that plunge into the dark waters of the unknown--you might find something beautiful.

That said...my favourite track overall is “Radio Waves,” an irresistibly fun cut that could easily have become a third single. Since “Genetic Engineering” and “Telegraph” live on side one of the record, “Radio Waves” is really the only “reprieve” we get on side two, smack in its middle. It really stands out, in context--almost like the opposite of how a more conventional album might have one out-there track that catches you off guard. Aside from all of that, though, the song also stands perfectly well alone. I have a real soft spot for music about music, how it’s made and transmitted, and “Radio Waves” is simply one hell of a ride.

Just A Normal Day at Your Neighborhood Arcade

AKA when your local neighborhood arcade is unknowingly also a place where two infamous legends meet up to play against each other.

Also why they’re HOT?!

His name is Gerald, and today is his first day working at a local neighbourhood arcade on New Mexico. He’s working as a part-timer worker with pretty decent pay, which is rare these days. His day duty is also quite simple; overwatch the place and make sure the visitors don’t cause much trouble while playing.

Seems simple enough, he thought, eyeing the nearly empty arcade. Today will be one peaceful day, huh…

“Hi there, Johnson!” One of his co-workers, Jason, waving at him while passing by his station, one of his hands carrying a red toolbox. He waved back at him, eyes lazily scanning the area around the mechanic as he stopped and put down the box beside some large arcade machines for Tekken 7.”Good luck on your first day here, I’d reckon you might need it.”

“What are you up to, Jay?” Gerald half-shouted, earning a glance from the mechanic.

Jason loudly hummed, eyes shifting back at the machine he’s working at. “Re-checking these fighting game machines so their performances on tip-top shape when both of them using them.” He answered the part-timer’s question, a small chuckle escaped from his lips. “Those two won’t stop nagging me if the controllers have a slight delay on them.”

Gerald raised one of his eyebrows. “Those two? Who?”

“Ah, well-”

“-and y’know how Chell is when she’s very determined, so she kept her distance to Gladys less than a meter, basically gluein’ herself to our cold albino queen!”

“Darn, that reminds me of when Alyx trying to get Hawk to smile, but most of her attempts failed and-”

The part-timer’s head turned to the source of the new voices that came from the front entrance. A massive-looking brunette-haired man with a black hooded suit and coat pants with an orange-coloured tie was talking to his slightly shorter companion, a lighter and slightly longer length brunette-haired man with a red plaid flannel shirt with the sleeve rolled to the elbow and paired with a pair of blue denim jeans and a black newsboy cap.

They definitely not looked like somebody that play in an arcade, one is too formal-looking and other looks like one of those farmboy helpers.

“Oh, welcome back, both of you!” Jason chirped, eyes still focusing on the machines. “How’s the last week’s match? Who won?”

The plaid flannel man pointed at the hooded suit man. “Gords beat ‘em up, and I got the second place.”

The mechanic heartily laughed. “Of course he is, as expected from North America’s Tekken legend.”

Gerald’s ears perked up. “These guys are famous?”

“Oh, I’m not really.” The hooded suit man shrugged, then nudged the plaid flannel man. “But this man over here was one of the youngest and most renowned archaeologists at the age of fifteen years old, now working as an archaeology major sub-teacher at Michigan State University and also a pro gamer.”

The plaid flannel man stuttered for a second before he got a grip. “A-anyway, we’re trainin’ together again for Tekken World Tour later,” he paused for a bit, his expression now a bit apologetic, “we’re sorry for last month, our friends got a bit...wild…”

Jason laughed out loud. “Don’t worry, your bosses paid more than the damage cost and now we got additions of a Japanese retro puzzle arcade and a racing car arcade.” He briefly shifted his eyes again, now at the two men while smiling softly. “I don’t mind both your friends’ vicious battle last month. In fact, it’s been a while since this arcade got that much rowdy and the visitors were enjoying their rivalry.”

The hooded suit man huffed out in relief. “Oh thank you, they’re feral children, alright.”

“Uhhhh, I’m sorry to disturb your conversation, but who are you both?” Gerald raised his voice, getting the two men’s attention. Both men went silent, before practically sprinting towards him, eyes sparkling with delight.

“We haven’t introduced ourselves yet, so of course you don’t know!” The hooded suit man started to flaunt a bit. “The name’s Gordon Freeman, but call me Antoine, honey bee~” He winked his green eyes at the part-timer, making his face heat up.

OH GOD, HIS GAY SOUL IS SCREAMING TO HUG HIM-

“And don’t take your eyes off me there, good-lookin’” The plaid flannel man tilted his chin with his finger to meet his bluish-green eyes, he could see the man’s smirk widened a bit as he tipped his cap down a bit, “the name’s Johnny Grady, nice to meet you too, pardner.”

Gerald immediately backed down from his station, stuttering badly as he covered his reddened face with both palms.

Goddamn, he’d already met two hot dudes on his first day already? What kind of fever dream he’s in now?

“Both of you, can both of you don’t flirt with the new staff, please?” Both men paused and looked behind them, Jason scoffed as if he’s disappointed. “Because of you both, the last one resigned because he questioned his sexuality so much after you both flirting with him so much. The last time I saw him after that, he’s waving a bisexual flag at the local pride fair.”

The part-timer slowly raised his hand. “I’m gay, though.”

Both men quickly turned their head at him, eyes widening for a while before grinning to each other. He could hear the mechanic’s loud sigh from his position. “...fine, but don’t overwhelm him.”

All of the sudden, he got hit by both men’s flirt attempts, each one managed to steal his heart bit by bit. His inner self slowly dying from all the hits it took and finally passed out as his outer self curled himself into a ball on the floor, his whole face was as red as a beet. Although he didn’t see them, he could see the piercing gaze, thirst for more flirting attempts, but his co-worker’s loud whistle stopped the gaze.

“Once again, please don’t overwhelm the poor boy!” Jason’s tone took more of a disappointed parent as he scolded both men. “Now look at what you did, he’s overheating! Leave him alone for a moment and go play here. I’ve placed an adapter for your console, Grady.”

“Goddamn, Jason. Thanks for your service!” And with that, the men walked away from his station. He was lying on the floor for several minutes, accompanied by both men’s excited gasps and shouts as Tekken 7’s arcade noises playing in the background.

It took him most of his willpower to get up and observe the men playing. At first, he wasn’t interested in any of things they’re playing, but as time passes, he focused on the notebooks they’ve brought with them as they scribbling down combos or put down characters’ key weaknesses and how to cover them. Over time, they watched some videos of the previous tournament and listing out strats for their foes. Though they’re also listed things about each other, there wasn’t any kind of bitterness feelings between them. In fact, he could categorize them as friendly rivals.

It’s been a while since he witnessed this kind of rivalry.

“You’re okay now?” Jason’s sudden voice startled him a lot, almost make him scream, but his common sense managed to get ahold of his composure. The part-timer nodded in response. “Good looks like they’re going to take their leave.” The mechanic pats his back. “Great job at handling their flirts for the first time, most employees’ responses were either faint or having an existential crisis.”

Ah, is that so…

he couldn’t blame them, their flirts were indeed that powerful.

“They’re both pro players from different org.” He pointed at the hooded suit man- or Antoine, he recalled. “That man is known as The Player in Hooded Suit, GorgeousMan from Black Mesa. He’s one of some North American players legend who got acknowledged by overseas players.” He then shifted his finger to the plaid flannel man- or Johnny. “As for him, he’s also known as The Wild Card Player, Rick from Aperture Games. Like Freeman, Grady’s got history to always score on minimal Top 8 or above that.” He lowered his hand, a smile still plastered on his face. “I’m proud to have them playing in this arcade.”

“Sounds like they’re a great person…” Jason slightly nodded, agreeing.

Few minutes later, both men were done packing their things and starting to head out, but not before Antoine once again winked and Johnny finger-gunned, both towards him. His heart fluttered, not as much as before, but it’s enough to warm his heart. He waved at them and they waved back at him with smiles plastered on their face.

Ah shit, he couldn’t leave from this job now, he’s fallen for two dudes he’d just met...

MCU Breakdown: That b-roll called Endgame, part 2

This mess has been swirling around my mind all day and I can safely say that once I managed to block individual offences and look at the greater picture, I was able to reach a conclusion that might bring some peace to my mind and, hopefully, yours too.

We’re not here to once again simply exhibit how this movie failed to express itself in a visual way, we’ll go a step further because I’m an asshole like that.

We’re here to explain why the failure of visual expression cheapens the story-telling process and leads to an unfulfilling cinematic experience.

I’m adding a “read more” this time because I actually remembered to do it.

Let’s ease ourselves into this.

Exhibit 1: Not using any visual storytelling elements.

This is the moment Pepper realises Tony has figured out time travel. That they can -potentially- travel back in time and save trillions of lives. And it’s shot, like this

Like a picture from a furniture catalogue. I’m saying furniture catalogue not only because the shot is 80% furniture and 20% character. Not just because it is quite dark, and the pieces that are drawing the attention of our eyes are the various lamps and candles, bright and shiny in an otherwise brownish, muddy frame.

This moment hasn’t earned its existence in our minds as an emotionally charged one.

It’s not just that Tony was never the character who envisioned himself as someone capable of “settling down”. It’s that our brains have been trained for centuries to look for visual clues. The wringing of hands, the beads of sweat on a forehead, nervous gestures, restlessness. The symbolism of a storm in the horizon that trouble is coming. They’re all simple things but they’re layers upon layers of meaning.

The trouble isn’t just that the Tony we know is not the Tony we’re looking at. It’s that the way the story unfolds, visually, doesn’t fill us with dread. Instead we are left looking at an image of a somewhat peaceful existence void of any emotional charge.

How this scene represents the “enormous scientific revelation will restore balance to the universe but will potentially ruin our family” sentiment, is an enquiry for me to make and for the Endgame show runners to never explain.

Exhibit 2: Using visual storytelling elements wrongly

To move forward from that significant for all its insignificance moment, it’s old news in the fandom that Endgame took the concept of found family and kicked it to an alternate dimension.

What we are looking at here, is the New “But Actually Really Damn Old” Dream of the MCU: Typical affluent white heteronormative Heaven.

And yet that’s not the problem. It is a problem, in the general “this is the 21st century and it takes a bit more to impress us” sense, but it’s not a problem from the perspective of a story. You can tell good stories for us all to enjoy that begin and end with this narrative, as long as you do it well.

It is quite obvious that the basic concepts of visual storytelling are known to these people. And they do attempt to use them on occasion. We’re talking about visual clues that will help nudge the viewer in the right direction, so that when the moment comes, the viewer will have seen it coming and won’t get annoyed.

Thus one could easily assume any form of foreshadowing is better than no foreshadowing, right?

Perhaps. But from my experience, certainly not in this instance. This is one of the big problems with this film, it is not certain where to draw the line on just how much does the viewer know? Is this their first MCU film? Second? Did they see Cap 1 and skip the rest?

Our story tellers don’t use all the information they have provided us with, and that creates traps for them. Even when they do attempt to warn us for what is coming they create more trouble for themselves. Because foreshadowing needs to be consistent. And dead ex girlfriends who got married more than 50 years ago, are not a likely candidate for a love story in the mind of the viewers.

Visual story telling is crucial and it needs to be consistent. You can show me hints that I will pick up on.

Here's Steve in the Avengers. He's certainly a man out of time, with his old man clothes.

Thankfully, by the time the Winter Soldier appeared, he was fitting in quite well in the world. A modern man now, with a modern attire.

So I'm left to watch in bewilderment and wonder, why is Steve back in his old man clothes in Endgame?

When did this regression occur? Viewers are not idiots. Like I said, we are trained to pick up on visual clues, it's crucial to our survival in the world. If I see a monkey eat seeds from a tree and then die, I'll remember not to eat from that tree.

I see the attempt here. The lack of colour and hope in the frame where Steve gazes longingly at the old compass, the soft, dream-like orange of his perfect life with his little wife. I can take a hint. Do I want it though? Have you prepared me for it? Does it make sense in terms of the other visual clues you've provided me with over the years?

Exhibit 3: Shifting the responsibility

Did I mention how much Marvel lucked out with the casting?

There’s 0 visual language employed. There’s no symbolism, no light, colour or perspective of happiness, or hope, or hopelessness. The only thing between those two pictures that says Tony and Natasha are not having some really strange conversation with each other right now, is the expression on their faces.

The fulfilment Tony found in parenthood and Natasha’s heartbreak over Clint’s crimes is visible only through the talent of the performers, not through any visual clues the show runners left behind for us.

Complex emotional moments laid entirely on the shoulders of the actors. Which isn’t entirely a condemnable thing, talented actors can pull strong emotions from their audiences, but they can only do so much.

Lets reference a pop culture legend most of you will understand

We don’t remember Luke finding out the truth about his father just because Mark Hamill is a really good actor. We remember it because in that moment, Luke had been brought to his lowest point. He was worn from battle, his life was hanging from a thread. Darth Vader was looming over him, the personification of everything he hated and in that moment he found out that a part of him came from that evil.

That build up was the result of a well written script, of a masterful piece of music, a visual tone that brought us to the brink of a revelation. The performance was part of the tale that will be retold for generations.

In conclusion

While there have been literally dozens upon dozens of articles about fans and viewers and critics having “issues” with this or that in Endgame, the truth is that our real problem, is this mixed bag of hardly ever used, or wrongly used storytelling elements. One that has been building up to a disastrous result for years.

And while all that is the least of Endgame’s crimes in the eyes of a Natasha fan (I have a personal vendetta against the film at this point) I still can’t help but bemoan the loss of a singular opportunity for creating a milestone in cinematic history.

Because if we can’t revisit Endgame for its story due to a complete lack in originality, and we can’t revisit it for its visuals, we won’t revisit it at all. And with it most of the MCU will go down as a piece of popular media that took the world by storm, but won’t have much to recommend it 10, 20 years from now. And isn’t that a shame. Edit: If you’re wondering why they messed up this badly, there’s a long list of reasons:

This wasn’t actually planned ahead. They didn’t write all the films from the beginning, they were making things up as they went along, so they created pitfalls for themselves.

They ignored the visual language.

They went along with weak scripts.

For Endgame specifically, they did ridiculously extensive re-shoots, which resulted in messy set ups (misplaced items on set, badly lit scenes, bad special effects) and bad editing.

They bit off more than they could chew with the amount of characters presented on screen, and never managed to create complete and fulfilling storylines for them.

Finally, they allowed bigotry and sexism to affect their judgement, thus placing the viewer against their narrative.

Review : Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020)

As a child of the 1980′s, there are certain cultural things that I am almost obligated to be a fan of, and somewhere high on that list are the Bill & Ted movies. As a fan of the first one, I was over the moon when a sequel was released two years later, but if someone would have told me then that, nearly three decades later, the pair of films would become a trilogy, I would have laughed long and hard. This sentiment only grew stronger with each passing year that Keanu Reeves became an icon, while Alex Winter (unfortunately) was veering towards the realms of an afterthought. Then, in 2019, the announcement of Bill & Ted Face the Music went from rumor to greenlit project, and even with the world shutting down, the film still found its way into the hands of moviegoers, answering many of our ‘what if?’ questions about the franchise.

In the year 2020, Bill S. Preston Esquire (Alex Winter) and Theodore ‘Ted’ Logan (Keanu Reeves) are still struggling with the their prophesized task of uniting the world through a Wyld Stallyns song. Unbeknownst to the duo, their inability to fulfill the prophecy is causing damage in the space time continuum, specifically in the form of a collapse that is displacing people and objects randomly throughout time and space. At the behest of The Great Leader (Holland Taylor), Kelly (Kristen Schaal), the daughter of Rufus (the late George Carlin), travels back in time to bring Bill & Ted to The Great Leader, who informs them that they have until 7:17 PM that day to write the song before the space time continuum fully collapses. Unsure of themselves, and scared at the possibilities of losing the Princesses (Erinn Hayes and Jayma Mays), the duo begins travelling throughout their lives in hopes of finding a version of themselves to give them the universe-saving song. Meanwhile, Bill & Ted’s daughters, Thea (Samara Weaving) and Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine), secure Kelly’s time traveling device in hopes of securing the most righteous band they can, but as the legend-filled roster prepares to assist Bill & Ted, all parties find themselves not only rushing to beat the clock, but to avoid Dennis Caleb McCoy (Anthony Carrigan), an android sent by The Great Leader to kill Bill & Ted prior to their failure, should they fail.

For a film that could have easily sat back and played the nostalgia hand, Bill & Ted Face the Music is a surprisingly insightful look into the process of self-fulfillment, unconditional love and finding ways to support your family while achieving your hopes and dreams. Seeing the Bill & Ted characters in a grown-up capacity, while strange at first, ultimately opens the door for viewer self-reflection as well, especially for those that grew up fans of the original two movies. While there are echoes of the previous two movies (journeys through time to collect important figures, a pit-stop in hell), these moments are auxiliary to the main focus, which finds Bill & Ted literally attempting to take command of their loves and lives by a symbolic (and literal) examination of all aspects of both. While the duo are quite literally ‘facing the music’ of fulfilling a universal destiny, they also find themselves equally ‘facing the music’ of how even the most sincere, openly loving people can still leave those close to them unfulfilled and wanting more, which further illustrates the fact that we’re never too old to rediscover ourselves.

The casting callbacks throughout the film are wonderful, with Missy, Mr. Logan, Deacon, the Grim Reaper, The Great One and even Rufus all making appearances throughout the run of the film without succumbing to the trope of fan service. We are also treated to the original phone booth as well, while simultaneously seeing the improved technology that occupants of the future now use in place of the phone booth, similar to how many of us have evolved from using phone booths and house phones in our modern world. Putting the educational journey into the hands of Thea and Billie also works beautifully, as this duo takes a journey down the halls of musical prowess rather than historical figures. Even the joke of Bill & Ted’s musical ability has evolved, with the duo now brave enough to pick up a litany of standard and obscure instruments, covering a wider base of genres than the pure rock we knew them for, and somehow still finding themselves unable to fulfill their assigned destiny.

Production-wise, all of the expected beats are hit, and narratively, the chaos of time travel takes a much bigger placement in the driver’s seat than in previous films. The real joy comes from seeing Bill & Ted interact with the many different versions of themselves that they encounter, be it run-down alcoholic versions, super-buff prison inmate versions, or even deathbed Bill & Ted, all of whom are given distinct personalities while still fitting into the classic Bill & Ted mold. Being able to pull so many previous members of the cast back into the story definitely helps as well, as their years of working with one another not only jumps off the screen, but gives the new characters a safe foundation to work with as they integrate themselves into the story.

Despite their previously mentioned day and night career trajectories, seeing Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves working together again is a joy to behold, as their undeniable chemistry is stronger than ever, and any sense of an ego is not visible to the viewer. For as talented and accomplished as Samara Weaving and Brigette Lundy-Paine are, it’s fun to see them fall into a sort of female Beavis and Butthead situation, where they can let their guard down and just go along for the incredibly silly ride. Kristen Schaal is hilarious as always, finding ways to milk her comedic moments without upstaging the stars or hamming things up. William Sadler also falls right back into his old ways as the Grim Reaper, including my favorite sequence of all where he shows how upset he is for being sued after trying to take the Wyld Stallyns name away from Bill & Ted. Erinn Hayes and Jayma Mays step out a bit more as the Princesses, even getting a chance to play older versions of themselves at times (albeit it dialogue-free). Amy Stoch, Hal London Jr. and Beck Bennett also sit right back into their respective characters, while Holland Taylor steps in wonderfully to replace the large void left in George Carlin’s absence. DazMann Still, Jeremiah Craft, Daniel Dorr and Sharon Gee all meet the task of playing their respective legendary musician roles, while Kid Cudi finds the humor in the task of cameoing as himself. Appearances by Jillian Bell, Dave Grohl, Anthony Carrigan, Patty Anne Miller and Win Butler round things out, with a few fun faces popping up in the credits as well.

If you’ve ever had an inkling of enjoyment for any of the movies in the Bill & Ted franchise, then Bill & Ted Face the Music was made for you. It may not win any awards this trophy season, and it certainly won’t reinvent the way that we look at movies, but it will entertain you, and it may even remind you of a simpler, more innocent time that we enjoyed as film fans.

If you don’t mind, could I consult something? Lately I’ve been feeling a little sad or discouraged, and don’t know what to do or if is anything to do about it, because I don’t feel the gods. Not even Hermes, which is the one who I’ve had more contact. I want to have a closer relationship with them, but Indont know of that’s reciprocated or If they are “with me” at all, I talk to them, I give offerings daily, but I don’t know if they accept them or even want them from me, J guess I’m doubting (1)

(2) myself. I’m afraid I’m not a good hp for them, my flaws are many I think, as a practitioner included. Could you give me some advice or tell me your thoughts about it, please? Thank you very much! And sorry for the rant, please ignore this if this is uncomfortable.

I understand the idea of thinking you're not good enough for them because of the flaws but here's the thing, you're human and humans have flaws.

If the gods cared so much about flaws they would never want to work with another human again but they love us.

They admire us when we try, even when we fail because it means we made an attempt. When we seek to change old habits, even when we go back to them. When we try to better ourselves, even when we go back to square one. When we honorably pay for or try to pay for past mistakes like Hercules and his 12 labors. There's a reason why that story remains a favorite in society's eyes.

Hercules killed his family which is the biggest offense you can ever give to the gods and he worked really hard to be forgiven. Remember that he was not only forgiven but became a legend that is still admired to this day.

If the gods could forgive Hercules whose flaws are massive by comparison, believe me when I say your flaws really don't bother the gods.

I personally have ADHD, PTSD, and a laundry list of a bunch of other things people would consider flaws but the gods understand because I'm human.

As for being ghosted by a god, the gods do this thing where they talk to you, connect with you, give you lessons and then poof, they are nowhere to be seen, heard or felt.

I personally get ghosted by the gods all the time. One day I'll have this strong bond with Aphrodite and suddenly she's nowhere to be felt or seen for the next 3-6 weeks or even months.

At first I thought she was mad at me as well but then I realized she was guiding me and then letting me go off on my own because gods don't want to hinder our free will.

In Ancient Greece, with the exception of The Pythia (and possibly others, considering there were a lot of documents we lost) the gods didn't really connect directly with their followers like how they do now. They trusted their followers knew what to do because the Hellenic religion was everywhere.

Now, the gods talk to us directly because they know Hellenism is no longer as big as it once was.

But remember the human free will? The gods believe that free will is a big part of what makes us humans. What sperates us from other animals.

The free will to create and chase our dreams or to chase a better life, etc.

If a god spoke to you every day, 24/7, they know you aren't going to be using your free will because you will be doing whatever that god is telling you to do. In order to fix this dilemma while still communicating with us, the gods will take a step back and see what we do.

Think of it as a trust excercise and for a god to trust you is such a powerful thing. The more a god steps away while you still want to work with them the more they trust you to excercise what they taught you.

Notice I said: "... While you still want to work with them"? That's because I personally believe a god sends energy to keep you interested in them. (This is my own personal opinion but if you don't feel this is true for you, feel free to ignore this bit because there is no right or wrong way to work with the gods, just our own way.)

Going by my own beliefs (again, ignore this part of it does not ring true for you) if a god is ghosting you but you are still drawn to them, it means this god is letting you excercise your free will away from the pressure of doing what they said just because they told you to do it. They want to see you choose it for yourself.

Like a parent holding their barely walking toddler's little hands and then letting them go as they try to get the baby to walk toward them without holding onto anyone.

Another reason why it's important for a god to step back and a devotee to excercise their free will is because that god may ask for something the devotee feels pressured to give them that may not be within their budget.

An example: a year or so ago, Aphrodite wanted a very specific ring embellished in diamonds as payment for something she had helped me with. She was more interested in the diamonds than the ring itself but I didn't want to disappoint her so I was trying to figure it out. I'm very sensitive to energy so while she was around me, I had a type of floaty high where I felt it was "just a diamond ring, no big deal" but as soon as Aphrodite was gone, I was able to reason with my wife and realize it was way out of our budget. When Aphrodite came back we talked and came to an agreement for me to just get her a beautiful but flawed diamond (whose flaws are only visably under a special lense) that was within my budget.

Another thing a god can produce is a specific feelings/energy. When Dionysus is around me for too long I feel tipsy which is a fun feeling but not when others begin to ask me if I've been drinking and look at me suspiciously when I say no. Especially on days when I really need to focus.

Speaking of feelings, if Ares is around me for too long I begin to get a fight or flight survival feeling and I've learned that between fight or flight I always choose fight so having Ares near me for too long makes me want to defend the ones I love with whatever it takes.

The gods know this. They know being around us for too long makes it hard for us to excercise our free will and depending on the god and person (again, I'm very sensitive to energy), we also start to be affected by their energy.

But what really sells it for gods is that a devotee learns by trial an error. A god guides them, but it's up to the devotee to choose their steps and engrain those lessons with the trust they give us.

You are loved and I believe that if you still want to work with the gods, crave to work with them, it means they still want to work with you.

Being ghosted by a god happens to a lot of devotees (it's a noticeable trend among Apollo followers but all gods do it.)

I know it can be hard but know that your gods will be there if they see you are about to fall.

Another thing that could cause the seeming disconnection could be stressors around your life that could be making it hard to see signs.

Make it a point to actively look for these signs.

Read anything and everything involving that god because they will occasionally reference a myth they were involved in as a sign. If they have a specific animal, bird, items, songs that remind you of them or if they keep popping into your mind are all signs of them trying to connect.

A lot of times people assume a god's energy will connect with them or the god will literally talk to that person but gods communicate in so many ways that I sometimes have to piece it all together.

An example of a Godphone moment for me: Hermes' face randomly pops into my mind. A song comes on and the line "just go get it." Keeps replaying in my head. I come home and find I have to choose between getting a thing or not. I get it and it leads me exactly where I wanted to go.

This is one of the many types of Godphone moments that I'll get. It's usually drawn by this ache to go to a place, read a verse or look something up as well as personal intuition.

So there's a lot of reasons why the connection might be off but I feel like a god disliking you isn't the answer. They love you so much more than you know.

I was always reminded by my friends, peers, coaches, parents of the cliché “Go to school, get good grades, play sports, train for the scholarships, and then get your degree so you can get a well-paying job.” This never sat well with me. I never really knew what I wanted to do, but that was just about the last thing I was interested in. Interestingly enough though, that’s exactly what I did.

I quickly found out that the education system was not the platform that would teach me the proper principles of high success. I looked around and compared the habits of college students and teachers against the habits of those who had already attained high performance and success, and (not) to my surprise, I found massive differences. College is sort of like pre-school for adults. No matter how similar to the real world it may be, it’s just not the real world.

As you may be able to tell already, I think very differently than a lot of people. Instead of going out every night, I stayed in my dorm room to work on research projects and theories on Space science & Astrophysics. The work I was doing pushed me to cultivate high-performance skills and put me in a position to build key relationships. In a few months’ time, I realized if I don’t go after my passions, I’ll be stuck at a desk job paying bills for the rest of my life. So I left.

My vision to encourage successful associations with youth and Young Researchers and Non-Researchers, youth-drove associations and youth developments to additionally fortify comprehensive youth investment in the basic leadership forms. To give instructive assets, Research Team, administration openings, and a worldwide system to the up and coming age of world pioneers. There was one problem. In India, you need a license to show your talent in front of the world. But nothing stopped to change the world and I change my everything and I fell into bad habits, bad routines, and left room for complacency in my work.

I longed to know the answers to the age-old questions of “why am I here?” and “where do I come from?” Those questions were probably not as understandable in my mind as they seem when I recount them here and now, but they gnawed at me, just the same, on some primordial, undefined level of my genetic make-up. Within every cognitive, rational human being lies that dark unanswered fog that rises to the surface every so often, want to have answers. And, yet, most of our lives, we move with slow through the years, totally unaware that those desires smolder deep down inside. We subconsciously suppress any wild, weird thoughts that there just might be answers beyond the domain of what we think we already know and accept. Human Beings walk around this world feeling absolutely unconnected to the greater world and universe around them. As a race, we have forgotten how to make this connectivity, and this ties into all aspects of how we recognize ourselves, our loved ones, our politics, our jobs and careers, our deities, our personal spiritualities, our place in the Order of Things.

Sure, like many kids growing up in India during the late ‘11s and 2012s, I asked my sir who knows about Hebrew Bible and I attended him at my uncles home and he taught about the Origins of Man from a Genesis-Chapter-One perspective. But I am not agreed on some points and I am thinking about his words. And for many years of my life, that was the only source point to which I subconsciously recognized. It was as if the stories of creation were settled long ago in that unquestioning little child’s understanding of How Things Work. The curiosities and questions that rose later in life from the mental depths were somehow summarily crushed by the teachings that had been put into my head so many years earlier.

But little did I know – for it was something that was never taught, but always skipped-over, avoided, misinformed or never mentioned – that the very book from which we dogmatically drew our genesis, held secretive, mysterious, encoded messages about origins, visitations and beings not of this world. What was once accepted without question as to the mystical, magical, miraculous stuff of ancient biblical stories, suddenly took on a very different perspective once I opened myself to the idea that there was more to those stories that I had been told, and much more brewing under the surface of what I had been taught.

Remove yourself, for a moment, to a place somewhere in a more dark past, before the days of modern psychological discipline and scientific advance. A time when we, the human race, believed that our life’s fortunes, illnesses, pains, and serendipitous events were strongly rooted in the spiritual and the supernatural. As we evolved our technology and sciences, we learned more and more about the mind and body, universal expansion and entropy, geological tectonics, and the movement of our solar system around a somewhat smallish star that burned in the Milky Way galaxy. Along the way, we dispensed with our trust on the astronomical, casting aside our need for gods, devils and every cast of angel, demon, and spirit in between. We corporately tuned-out our hearts, and turned our minds to the methodological pragmatic, allowing Science and skeptical thought to successfully supplant faith in that great “Something-Bigger-Than-Ourselves.” Quantifiable Fact became the inevitable surrogate for the misty stuff of myth and legend. And while we may not have totally thrown out the baby with the bath water, we have successfully become a culture that discounts anything that cannot be measured by the Scientific Method, casting dispersions on experiential faith and even the slightest adherence to anything that smacks of an older spiritual belief system.

The supreme effort that occupies most of the recorded history of the Human Race – after the history of War, that is (which, sadly, seems to be synonymous with the History of Mankind) – is the great quest for discovery: the seeking-out of the whos, whats, wheres, whys and hows of our existence. And yet, while attempting, on that quest, to adhere to strict, quantifiable sources, we have let go the Spiritual; the innocuous, insubstantial, airborne flotsam that, when you actually look for it, seems to permeate every facet of being, down to the very spark of life, itself.

I wanted the real, raw, non-simulated experience of being punched in the mouth, and having no choice but to work my ass off to get the results I wanted. I was jolted awake by the stark reality that if I continue to allow my surroundings to dictate my actions, I would never achieve any of the goals I set for myself.

I will continue to grow and scale my agency to a National Space Agency, and hopefully, impact others on the way. I want other people to understand that we only have one life. Only one. If you don’t ever take the risk to chase your dreams, the probability of you living out that dream goes down to basically 0. So don’t be afraid. What’s the worst that can happen?

80% of the obstacles you put in front of you are from yourself, and they’re fake obstacles. Just do the work.

The more time you think or strategize about what you’re going to do, some else is out there already doing it.

What sparked your journey towards entrepreneurship?

Rajatkumar: The idea that we only get one life, so we might as well make it the best life we’ve ever dreamt of. Research embodies that idea. Through massive pain and adversity, you’re able to live a life of total control and add tremendous value to other People’s lives at the same time. The most successful people live in comfort because they operate in a world of chaos.

None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? What lesson did you learn from them?

Rajatkumar: I’ve learned from a multitude of people. From Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawkings, etc. The list goes on. I never had a direct mentor, but I surrounded my mind with positivity. I listened to successful people online, I listened to their podcasts, I invested me to learn new things, I read their books – and then I act on that information.

Why don't we love esport orgs?

I am a huge football fan (that's soccer football, not any other kind of football) and just recently I saw my childhood team, LiverpoolFC, win the Premier league title, our first division title in 30 years and first since the Premier leagues inception.

Like all the other fans, I felt the same mixture of emotions: relief, tears of joy, uncontained excitement, and great love and admiration for the players, the manager, and the club.

Thinking on it since, I've began to wonder why I don't feel that same love for esports organisations. I in no way feel the same kind of romanticism surrounding them. Why is that?

Players being bigger then the Team

While there are definitively Star players, important players that are match winners that have lead to Liverpool's success this season, no player no matter how good they are are bigger then the club. Stars will walk in and out of your doors and you will love them while they are here, and either you will cuss them when they jump ship or clap them off when they retire.

For another example think about when Lebron James made the move to Miami Heat. For Cleveland fans they were absolutely distraught at the time. But that doesn't mean you stop supporting your team. It just means you hold bitterness and resentment to the people that leave. The team always comes first.

In contrast to esports though, people tend to jump around teams on a constant basis, there isn't really the same semblance of loyalty, and it doesn't really seem fans care all too much either. As a fan of fighting games and Starcraft, both 1v1 competitive games, its almost expected that your hero is the player that plays your character/race and you are going to follow them regardless of where they go.

But even in team esports, it still hasn't held up. As an Australian watching the core line up of AZR, jks, jkaem, Gratisfaction and Liazz move from Renegades to 100 Thieves, I didn't really give a second thought about ignoring RNG and being a 100T fan. I just wanted to watch my team, and my team was the roster it wasn't the organisation.

So is that the key? Do teams need to form a bond by representing a region and that's how they can keep fans.

International fans and Club Identity

If you look at the past ventures in esports when we began doing long seasonal competitions from the ground up, Not only did they choose to go the franchise model, they also tried to tie it back to a City. The Championship Gaming Series in 06-08 took this approach as well as the Australian Gfinity (both now defunct I might add).

For a recent example take Blizzards attempt at forming a privatised league with the OWL with again having teams be City based: Seoul Dynasty, London Spitfire, Houston Outlaws.

Now this is actually a proven model for success if you look all over in real sports from Major League Soccer and A-League for soccer, Indian Premier League and Big Bash League for cricket etc. So it makes a lot of sense to try and copy.

One benefit is if you have less interest or investment,as a first time viewer when you tune in you automatically have a team you can identify with and to cheer for purely because you live in that part of the country.

The problem is esports is quite an international reach, A city itself, isn't really enough to sustain a team, it has to be representative something larger. Its probably why what more often happens is we are attracted to a philosophy and a style, and that's what makes us fall in love. Because of a particular way this team plays and more importantly what it represents to us.

I am obviously on the other side of the world to Liverpool, and if I think about my relationship with Liverpool. I haven't yet visited the city or to Anfield (Its on my bucket list to watch a game from the Kop end) but I identify with that club more then any other because of what they represent to me. Liverpool was a working class region of England during the industrial boom and its reflected in scousers as people.

I was growing up in the early 2000s among Man Utd fans and being ridiculed and jealous of how easy success seem to come to them, and how hard we had to work. But with that also came the beautiful moments of triumph, like Istanbul. There are picture perfect moments that represent what it is to be a fan of that club, there are Players that embody everything about what that badge on the front represents.

I think esports can deliver that feeling but I think there is a big reason why they are currently failing at it.

Neglecting history

Even though I didnt grow up in the years when Liverpool were dominant and successful, the club does its part to make sure for any new fans, you will learn and be proud of that history.

Club Icons like Ian Rush, Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard are still attached to the club often in ambassadorial roles. Having the past generation let you know what the values of the club are, what's expected of you and reminding the current players exactly what being a part of the club represents.

But we don't do that in esports.

This is actually something Duncan “Thorin” Shields has talked about in a video before and I'll echo some of the same sentiments here. But esport teams, even the longest running and financially successful ones seem to never acknowledge the past very often.

A League of Legends example I think about is Hai Du Lam. I don't follow Lol very closely but I know Hai and I know Cloud9. Hai is what would be considered a Cloud9 Legend but because of the nature of it, Cloud9 seem disinterested in doing anything to celebrate something like that and especially with Hai forming his own team it doesn't feel like that relationship would be allowed to happen.

Keeping on Cloud9 for another moment because their CSGO team seem to illustrate this lack of understanding. The Cloud9 I remember, the one I feared was the NA Galáctico squads.

A team of absolute star players, a team that would constantly bash heads with Team Liquid and would stand head and shoulders above the rest of the continent.

This is the only North American team that has won a CSGO major. That team of Skadoodle, Stewie2k, autimatic, RUSH and tarik. Cloud9 have set a precedent with everything we have been talking about.

As of the writing of this blog, Cloud9s current squad (JT, motm, oSee, floppy and Sonic) is a poor reflection of that history. This is nothing against these players they are all capable players but if this team was named anything else, they would not even be giveing a second look at them. Would those fans who bought jerseys two years ago be proud to stand behind that team? No not a chance.

When you play for Cloud9 the expectation is be “Best in America” and at the moment they are 3-4 placings at best, behind where they should be.

Is it even a problem?

For a lot of people that are into esports there is always a temptation to compare ourselves to the established mainstream sports that exists.

Sometimes we have waved that flag in their face to go “pfft, who cares what you think, we do it better then you” while at the same time behind close doors try to emulate them more and more.

Maybe the real motivation behind this whole post was just an excuse to talk about how much I love Liverpool and how much I want to rub it in every Mancs face (especially you Tyson!) but I do wonder at the day where I would feel the same amount of emotion I did last Thursday when I woke up and actually cried because something amazing had happen. Will I ever be that invested about an esports team? I'm not sure yet.

I’m very invested in Yuri crushing on Yuuri(’s skating).

Because Yuuri had Victor Nikiforov as a role-model, and he’s only four years younger; Yuri is 15; Victor Nikiforov has been Victor Nikiforov, Living Legend for as long as Yuri can remember;

Because Yakov - who is an excellent coach, who brought Lilia on to train Yuri - still thinks of Vitya when Yuri performs a world-record breaking Agape;

Because everything is setting Yuri up as Victor Nikiforov Mk II, but Lillia encourages Yuri on a different path both when she tells him she’ll make him a prima ballerina and when she recognizes he’s made himself something else;

Because “not everyone grows up looking up to Victor Nikiforov”;

Because Victor might have fallen for Yuuri, but Yuri saw him first, saw his step sequences, while Victor didn’t recognize him;

Because Yuuri has the same name as him, and this complete baby dork decided it was a sign and rushed after this older skater whom he really admired to deliver the peptalk from hell, in perfect Feltman tradition filtered through teenage over-emotional investment, that amounted to “how dare you fail this/us/me” with copious undertones of “i’ll give you something to be push back against so anger propels you out of your funk, ‘kay? i’m insulting you right now because i know you can do so much better than that, why didn’t you show me, show them, better?” (it would work on Yuri, making himself angry to overcome difficulty. hashtag the motherfucking Rostelecom Cup. Everything about where Yuri lives tells him to look up to Victor Nikiforov. And he does, because that’s what the world of figure skating is in the era of Victor Nikiforov. He didn’t stumble onto his reputation of Living Legend. But Yuuri Katsuki? Yuuri’s the person-to-look-up-to Yuri chose himself. Nothing predestines Yuuri to be an inspiration for young Russian skaters. Yuuri doesn’t have Victor’s ludicrous victory list.

For a kid with as much raw ambition as Yuri, choosing Yuuri as a rival is a bit restrained.

I don’t think rivalry covers it, really. That Yuri “rage makes up 90% of my body” Plisetsky expresses his feelings in a way that resembles it isn’t exactly surprising, but like his professing to hate Yuuri (because Yuri totally goes out of his way to chase the people he hates, especially after they’ve had a rough day, and sometimes he also feeds them special food his grandfather made for him! ...well, no, he doesn’t. Compare Yuri repeatedly getting in Yuuri’s way with his interactions with JJ; Yuri is never the first one to talk to JJ.), we should look deeper than that. Yuuri hasn’t achieved anything yet that Yuri would want to surpass. (Victor has.)

Let’s not even kid ourselves that Yuri’s Victor issues don’t play into his thing for Yuuri. And vice-versa. (between the fact that in both cases, Yuri was there first - first one to be wowed by Yuuri’s step-sequences, first one Victor promised a program to - and the fact that Yuuri turned out to be a Huge Victor Nikifrorov fanboy and what does that mean for Yuri’s attempt to be his own person if the other person he looks up to also turns out to look up to Victor, and the fact that these two skaters Yuri decided were worth his attention decided he wasn’t worth theirs - because that’s what the showdown at the Ice Castle proved - and then Yuri throws himself into Lilia’s training to remake himself... and the canon relationships don’t stay static, so what i’m saying is: Yuri being mortified when Victuuri cheers on him at Rostelecom, for instance, is layers upon layers.)

If Yuri says he wants to beat Yuuri, the part we should pay attention to isn’t so much “beat”, as the ideas 1)Yuuri will have done something worth noticing (beating), 2)Yuri would really like Yuuri to notice him, sempai.
