turning three.js into a web-component-based ECS
oooh yeah - how's that for a jargon-y heading, eh? 4/5 stars. go me.
ANYWAY, game progress! here's what I've been doing:
because I'm building this sucker with HTML/CSS/JS and using three.js to do all the 3D stuff: I wanted to be able to keep the cool declarative workflow that's native to web development, and that means using an Entity Component System (aka ECS).
I've done this with two layers:
a custom library called three-ecs, which allows me to create a World, Entities within that world, and Components to give entities some functionality
a custom elements library called three-elements that allows me to define Entities with elements, and attach Components as attributes.
that first point allows me to create a 3D scene like this:

with all those Components written as independent modules - here's that AutoSpin component, for example:

and, using my three-elements library, I can write that same world as:

...which is wayyy easier to read, and it means that both my 2d UI and 3d scene can all share the same developer interface: the DOM.
and I like the DOM - it's neat.
(side-note: tumblr really needs a code-block post type; these images are blurry as shit 💀)
if you've done any 3d-development on the web then this might be familiar to you - it's heavily inspired by the a-frame library, and full props to the mozilla team for that; I just wanted to make my own version that did-away with all the XR features, gave me more granular control over the render loop, used classes instead of objects, and used vanilla web components instead of a-frame's own custom element system.
so yeah - I've just been creating that alla that, moving some core bits of three.js functionality INTO that system, and planning-out bits of the actual game on the whiteboard some more (will share that when I have something to show).
...will hopefully have something more interesting than cubes to share with y'all soon 👀

Will never get over how hilarious the accidental lesbian coding of the koncass "romance" arc was in Batgirl. Like Cass had a 'friend break up' with Steph and immediately the very next issue began observing couples on the street and thinking more about romantic love and whether she should try it and started asking questions and realised that most men were gross actually but Superboy seems kind of OK so she should do the whole kissing and dating thing now right? So she goes all the way to Kansas to try it out and then they fight a rock monster and she's like "Hang on a second I think I'm just lonely and looking for a friend since I lost Steph. I don't think I have any romantic feelings for you at all actually." and they agree to be friends and it's a happy ending and she doesn't for one second analyze the fact that losing her relationship with Stephanie made her want to replace it with a romantic partner.
And then when Steph dies Cass monologues to us about what the funeral was like and says how Steph was her first friend while everyone else is more like family and "Stephanie was... I uh. I can't talk about her now. Is that normal?" (which yes is perfectly normal grief but also the confusion about what exactly separates Steph from the rest of the batfamily and makes her Cass's "first friend" is Something). She then goes on to fantasize twice about Steph swooping in to save her and carrying her away from danger while she's dying. The second time Steph literally bridal carries her in her arms.

Cass will ignore all of this of course and then go on to pat herself on the back when a normal civilian man asks her out for coffee. She declines obviously because she's too busy superheroing but the fact that he asked means she's getting an A+ in the social skills submodule of Romance. She never needs to say yes to any of these of course just the fact that they like her means she's doing a good job and that's all she needs! Anyways time to stare into Steph's eyes and analyze every aspect of what she sees there. As besties.

If I set a project up to use git submodules, is it possible to make the project control recursion?
I'm aware that I can set my own git config to always do full recursion, but is it possible to make it so I don't need to set that up globally but just for one specific project - which then does auto recursion no matter who clones it?

Up front: I'm fine. Don't worry about me. I've been dealing with this stuff for a decade. It's so mundane it's boring
So to me at least suicidality has two flavors, which we might call "reasoned" and "felt".
Felt suicidality is when your immediate stimulus is so terrible that escaping it is your number one priority, but it's inside your brain so you can't escape it, and so you feel you have to kill yourself the same way you might have to gnaw off your own foot if you were stuck in a bear trap and starving to death in the woods. I have no real recourse against felt suicidal it, but luckily antidepressants are pretty effective against it for me. Barring that I can like, take a nap, and there's a good chance I will feel terrible but less terrible when I wake up. It tends to be fleeting. Number one tactic to avoid dying: do not keep easy means of suicide in your house. Don't live alone.
The much more insidious form is reasoned suicidality. In this form, a submodule is arguing passionately that killing yourself is the rational choice. The expected utility for the rest of your life is negative. Things might be terrible but bearable now, but there's some oncoming thing that means it's going to get worse, or you're certain it will never get better, etc. This submodule loves the argument that there are dates worse than death. Like, if you know youre going to be tortured for the rest of your life, you should kill yourself now to avoid it.
As such, I think countering this line of reasoning requires philosophical work. I think it requires a decision theory where the answer to the question "if I know I'm going to be tortured to death, should I kill myself first to avoid it?" is no. There are lots of arguments for this position but I find most of them unsatisfying, so personally I think i have to embrace positive utilitarianism. The hedonic integral in the sky has an absolute value (or actually like. A relu. Whatever) slapped around it. It accepts values that decrease the total, but not below zero. Death is not infinitely bad but things cannot be worse than it.
The intuition: what have you got to lose dipshit! Let's say, for the sake of the argument, you have 60 years of suffering left on this earth. Who gives a shit! Obviously it's worse than 60 years of pleasure, but dying does not give you 60 years of pleasure! It gives you 60 extra years of nothing! Sure, suffering those years gives you a worse "high score" on the net pleasure in your life. Who gives a fuck! You have, quite literally, nothing to lose! Suffer anyway! Suffer for no reason! Why not! Sure, maybe your suicide is inevitable when the bouts of felt suicidality hit, but getting it over with early doesn't achieve anything!

Today I improved "git-cotree --init" to handle several edge cases, primarily involving untracked and ignored files. Previously its support for untracked or ignored files was rather limited, covering only the most basic of cases.
But one big goal of git-cotree was to make switching from a normal clone to a nice multiple worktrees setup seamless, and this brings it a lot closer to that goal.
So I am now a lot more confident recommending git-cotree for others to use. I still don't know when I'll actually flesh out the README, but at least now the risk is a lot lower.
However, I'm not sure what happens if for example Git submodules or Git LFS are in the picture. But odds are now good that any remaining issues are due to limitations in how multiple Git worktrees interact with some other Git feature rather than the fault of git-cotree specifically.

I had an exam yesterday, one more to go. it was the written part, so 12+ hours of solving problems, exhausting just like before. I completed all of them, but of course I am not sure if my solutions are correct, I will find out on monday. I'm proud of the progress I've made
right now I'm studying for the second part, so the theory-oriented one, I can barely focus because I've already learned those things and now I have to relearn them again

I'm trying to prove all the theorems on my own. partly to see how much I remember, partly to see how much I'm willing to improvize. as they say, if you're using too much memory then you're doing something wrong so I'm hoping to be able to come up with the proofs without memorizing anything new
my technique for studying the theory for the exam is to first test myself on how much I remember by trying to write everything down and note where I'm unsure or don't remember at all. then I read the textbooks starting from the worst topics up to the better ones. when I encounter a long complicated proof I am trying to break it down into steps and give each step a "title" or a short description
for instance, the Baer criterion featured in the photo has the following steps:
only do "extenstions on ideals to R→M ⇒ M injective"
define the poset of extenstions of A → M, A ⊆ B and a contrario suppose there is a maximal element ≠B
use the assumption to define an ideal and a submodule that contradicts the maximality of the extension
it is much easier to fill out the details than to remember the whole thing. this is probably the biggest skill I acquired this semester, next to downloading lecture notes pdfs of random professors I find online lmao
a friend suggested that I could make a post about tips for reading math textbooks and papers. as for papers, I don't have enough experience to give any tips, but I can share how I approach reading the books
a big news in my life is that I got a job. I will be a programmer and I start in march. at first I am going to use mostly python, but in the long run they will have me learn java. I'm excited and terrified at the same time, this semester is gonna kill me

its been in the talks for a while with our lawyer, we are likely going to swap the assets folder to an entirely separate repository, so that its NOT under apache 2.0 going forward but rather a different non-commericial-ish one
on da tech side it would mean just running an extra command to get the git submodule, for modders it shouldn't mean anything (unless u would be using it for commercial purposes, in that case, u would have to contact us)

okay so theres this logic that the submodule who wants to lower my self esteem uses *constantly*, that basically goes like "definitely some people are not good (in the sense of quality), therefore any logic that would apply to *everyone* is bunk, your logic has to be based on specific facts about yourself". but honestly like...idk how useful is it to accurately assess one's own quality? say for a second that im a total loser, and dumb and not good at anything and all that. does it benefit me for me to know these things, to believe these things? does it benefit anyone else? i mean, not really, right? i think id kinda prefer being a dunning-kruger arrogant asshole.
i guess having an accurate self-assessment is like, useful for making choices that lead to better outcomes. and we might live in a just world where realziing youre not very good and putting the effort in to improve yourself improves things for you. but ive basically accepted that for all but the most quantifiable things my choices are based on basically meaningless vibes. and honestly at least right now i dont see clear ways self improvement would improve my life, except something something mental health.
