Meow with the custom fabric transplants
I've been so excited to share Meow's story with you all! I mean, he's a partial recover, and you've seen those before, but in this case, I used multiple fabrics to replicate his striped original fabric and I was really happy with how he came out... and so was his family. So, without further ado, may I present Meow!
Meow is a very small cat, maybe 7" long? Less if he's sitting. But he had been very well loved in his short life. His person's uncle wrote to me, asking if I could help. Here is the diagnosis photo he sent:
Just fyi, his balding was also pretty serious on his back.
There were a few options for care, but treating his balding was definitely the most serious concern. In the end, his family opted for new eye, bald spot treatment with transplants but not a full recover, and a gentle spa, as well as wound repair.
So he flew to the hospital from Washington state, not too long a flight, and started his treatment with a spa:
Next, he got new eyes. His eyes were originally green -- the cataracts were so bad, I couldn't really tell the original color till I took out his eyes and looked on the backside of them. Here he is with vision restored to 20/20:
Next were transplants.... Perfect matches for striped fur are impossible without a donor (and sometimes even donors aren't perfect). I've done transplants where we use the background fur color, and add black stripes for tigers (you've seen some of those here) but Meow's stripes weren't black. Sometimes we just use a solid close to one of the stripe colors in that case, and that was an option... and actually the plan for Meow. But then I had two fabrics which matched his two stripe colors really closely:
I talked with his family about it, and we agreed to mix the colors in the transplants... a little of one, a little of the other. But keep in mind, stripes on animals aren't exact lines, so this wasn't a case of making a fabric by sewing strips on a machine, and then using the new fabric. Each piece was chose, and shaped for the area where the bald spot was, and sewn in separately. It was more complicated than this surgery usually is, but also kind of meditative. :-)
So... here is Meow all better! (He did get a heart btw, I just didn't photo it)
His family was thrilled too. "He looks great!" they wrote. And Meow flew north and home.

Kitty's Burns
Stuffed animals and dolls get burnt in many ways. Some are in fires. Some get burnt in the dryer, or with a blow dryer, in an attempt to dry them after a wash. But another common burn is from a lightbulb. Sometimes, you catch the burn early, so there's just a touch of discoloration. This happened to one of my teddy bears when I was in college... he fell off the bed onto a light. But I caught him pretty quick. Here he is today with some of his friends: Eeyore, a quoll, and a quokka:
'and here's his burn. It's on the back of his leg, and it still feels like the rest of his fur, so 'and here's his burn. It's on the back of his leg, and it still feels like the rest of his fur, so I've opted to leave it as is. Any transplant wouldn't match perfectly, and would be pretty invasive surgery. He earned his scar and he's proud of it. :-)
But sometimes, patients get really burnt by lightbulbs. As in charred, third degree burns. And that's what happened to Kitty. She was sitting on a light that was accidentally turned on and no one noticed till it was too late! Here is her diagnosis photo:
The (nice?) round burn went all the way around to her backside, but was quite localized. Burning had not only changed her fur color, it was charred, the fur melted, and so did some of the stuffing underneath. For this type of burn, the treatment is to excise the burnt fur and stuffing, and then give the patient new fur and stuffing as needed to restore the damaged areas. This is different from the usual fur transplants for bald spots, which go over surviving skin. Kitty's family decided she would get a spa too. She arrived and after stuffingectomy, started her bubble bath:
She got new stuffing, with a heart of original, unburnt stuffing:
And then she had surgery to treat the burn itself. Here she is all better and ready to fly home:
It's pretty hard to see the new fur, which was great! And it will blend even more as she's hugged in her natural environment. Her family wrote "Oh wow! She looks fantastic! :) I just shared photos with my wife, and she’s very happy :) .... couldn’t be more pleased!"
So Kitty flew home for more hugs and adventures... but no more lightbulb seats!

Auctober Month: Day 4 (Animal Friends)
I don’t have any real animals as pets, but I do have a stuffed cat who I will always consider to be my sweet little baby boy. I named him Wilfred Midnight (Wilfred: after Mei’s stuffed dog in Turning Red; Midnight: after a cat that my grandma had and one of my favorite Coldplay songs, “Midnight”).

This Us...all too familiar
Last night I saw the promo for the next episode of This Is Us, where Kate now decides to become Rebecca's caretaker in her infirmatry, and afterward, I suddenly realized that I've witnessed it before in real life, in person, and it was crazy.
Imagine Kate taking care of Rebecca...
including the stuffed 'therapy cat'...
but they're living like 'Grey Gardens'...
and you'll literally imagine my Aunt Gloria and Grandma from 2010-2015.
