Anyway, here's a not-so-quick and dirty guide to rope safety, rope uses, and rope types:

Safety:

Safety is, of course, the top priority when it comes to rope! When engaging in any form of kink/BDSM you need to follow RACK (Risk Aware Consensual Kink). That means you need to know the possible risks of rope before using it. Because I approach kink from a RACK standpoint rather than an SSC (Safe, Sane, Consensual) standpoint, I'll be talking about various things you can do with rope that aren't technically "safe," but that people frequently engage with in a risk aware way.

When playing with rope, you always need shears within reach that are able to cut through your rope in case of an emergency. You need to have a safeword in place, or a safe signal if a gag is being used at the same time. You should also never leave someone alone if they're tied.

When tying rope, you need to be careful about the rope bottom's circulation. If you plan for them to stay tied for a significant amount of time or you aren't going to be paying close attention to their circulation, then you want to follow the same two finger rule that you do for an animal's collar. You need to be able to squeeze two fingers comfortably between the rope and the person's skin.

The risks associated with rope bondage include nerve damage, asphyxiation, and loss of circulation. You shouldn't tie someone if you don't know what you're doing, and this guide will not be enough information for you to safely engage in rope-based kinks without further research or rigging classes.

You need to be careful when it comes to tying around the neck. Generally, unless breathplay is the goal, you should never have rope tied around the neck. If you loop rope around the neck, you need a loop left out to thread your rope through, it should never be threaded through the rope that's against the neck. An overhand knot on the bight is always a good bet for that!

You also need to be careful when tying around joints, and be aware of pressure points because that's where nerve damage is most likely to occur. Ribs are also a sensitive spot, you never want to pull too tight when tying around the ribs/under the arms. Generally, if you don't know what you're doing, don't try it.

When it comes to using rope for breathplay, you should always use a quick-release knot. Hitch knots will probably be your go-to for that. If you can't release the rope with a single tug, then you shouldn't be asphyxiating someone with it.

There's probably more safety stuff, but that's all I've got off the top of my head rn. Generally, I'd recommend looking at rope classes (online or in person) if you want to learn more!

Uses:

Shibari/Kinbaku -

Shibari/kinbaku is a form of rope bondage that finds its origins in Japanese culture. In modern BDSM the two terms are typically used interchangeably to refer to the same practice, though some people argue they're different things. It's not a practice restricted to Japan (people get weird and orientalist about shibari/kinbaku and how meaningful they think it is in Japan), and it's very popular all over the world as both an art form and a kink. Shibari is a form of erotic bondage, and it differs from other types of bondage in a few ways. It's typically done with a thinner rope made of natural fibres that are called asanawa. The focus in shibari is typically not only bondage, but also artistry and sensations and the process of tying. Generally, Shibari is a very structured form of bondage, with specific rules. There are various rope patterns that can be combined to form a (typically) beautiful and intricate bondage. Many of the patterns are adapted from hojōjutsu ties, or ties used historically in Japan to restrain and harm prisoners. They're adapted to be safer and not cause lasting harm. Sometimes, though, the point of shibari is to cause discomfort. A lot of ties can be used for predicament bondage and rope torture.

Predicament Play and Rope Torture -

Generally, predicament play involves the bottom being put into a position where they have to choose between two undesirable things. When rope is involved, usually one or both of the options involve stress on the body. An example of this could be someone who is tied so that they either have to stand uncomfortably on their toes or let their muscles rest but have a rope pressed painfully against their genitals. Rope torture is general pain derived from rope. Whether it's a painful bondage/shibari position or a genital rope or otherwise, if someone is being tortured with rope it's, well, rope torture!

Breathplay -

This one is pretty self explanatory, and I really just feel the need to remind people that breathplay is always high risk and that you should be aware of those risks and all the ways to mitigate/lessen them before engaging in it.

Suspension -

Suspension is any form of bondage that includes at least one anchor point above the rope bottom. There's partial suspension, where the rope bottom only has part of their body lifted off the ground/held up by the ropes, and full suspension, where the rope bottom's full body is held up by the ropes. Suspension is riskier than other forms of bondage because of the risk of falling. It feels different from non-suspension bondage because your body weight presses down on the rope. Because of the risks involved with suspension, it's unsafe to do with a rigger who is untrained. Generally, the three types of suspension are vertical, horizontal, and inverted. Inverted suspension is extra dangerous and shouldn't be done for long periods of time due to blood rushing to the head.

Bondage -

General bondage is anything that involves tying people up, primarily with the goal of restraining them. Rope is only one of many methods that can be used for bondage, and methods can be combined as well. Rope bondage can be done on any body part, including your hair. Thinner rope is typically used for smaller areas, such as hand/finger and foot/toe bondage. Thicker rope is more common for the limbs and torso. For face bondage, both types are common.

Types:

When it comes to choosing rope, you obviously have to think about length, width, tooth (how well it grips onto itself, better tooth means stronger knots but sometimes harder to untie), and how strong it is depending on what you want to do with it. Colour and type, however, will primarily affect the sensory experience.

Rope tends to have different end types (knotted, taped, etc.) and different constructions (twisted, braided, etc.), but for now I'll just be going into the material types of rope. I won't cover literally every possible type because I'm most familiar with natural fibres and nylon, but here are the common ones that I have experience with:

Jute -

Jute rope is the kind of rope you probably imagine when you think about a damsel in distress being tied up. When it's processed, it doesn't have as much scratchy fuzz on it, and it tends to darken. Generally, processed jute looks more finished than unprocessed jute, and all jute tends to get shinier and smoother the more you use it. Jute is very scratchy, but very good for bondage. It ties and unties well, and it's very flexible. It has a very distinctive almost woody smell? And it gets more flexible over time. Washing it will degrade it, but otherwise it'll last a long time. It can be pretty expensive.

Cotton -

Cotton is incredibly soft, light, cheap, and very good for beginners who have shears and a lot of patience. There's no added discomfort from the rope's texture, so it's easier to focus on the sensations from the rest of the bondage. It's easy to tie, but very difficult to untie, especially with tighter knots. It can fray if you're not careful when untying the knots, and it often stretches and/or compacts. It's very light and won't hurt your skin, but it's easy to get dirty and not so easy to clean. Not recommended for suspension.

Silk -

Silk is incredibly soft and easy to use, but it's expensive. It's easy on the skin, knots well, and is both flexible and strong. Generally, if you want a gentle rope, it's the perfect rope except for the whole "it costs so much fucking money" thing. You can get plenty of cheap rope labelled as silk, but it's almost always actually nylon. Which is a nice rope, but it's not the same as silk rope. Also not recommended for suspension.

Nylon -

Nylon is soft, stretchy, and you can stick it in the washing machine! It's on the pricier end of synthetic ropes, but I don't use synthetic ropes much so it's the only one I'm mentioning. It leaves a very nice pattern on the skin, and it works well for bondage and suspension. It's not recommended for shibari because you tend to need more knots in it, since it doesn't have a good tooth.

Hemp -

Hemp needs to be bought from a reputable seller. Bad hemp rope can be itchy and shed fibres. But good hemp is strong and good for a variety of things. It's the most common type of rope used in shibari, and once its been broken in it can be flexible. It's strong and has a good tooth, so it can be really good for suspension compared to other natural fibres. Hemp can be an allergen, so you have to be careful that you don't have an allergy before trying to use it, as the rope top or the rope bottom.

Linen -

Linen is expensive, but it's got good tooth and is flexible and strong. It's softer than hemp and usually can be thrown in the washing machine for cleaning. It often leaves pretty strong marks, but it shouldn't irritate the skin. Generally, it's a really good rope but like most good ropes, it costs a lot.

Bamboo/Rayon -

Bamboo/Rayon rope is another very expensive one. It's similar to silk in a lot of ways. It's flexible, soft, and makes solid knots. It's unlikely to stretch and doesn't cause irritation to the skin. Bamboo is also antibacterial which makes it a great choice for any messy play, like gagging or genital rope.

Coconut -

Coconut rope is very weak and very scratchy. You shouldn't use it for much other than rope torture. It's good for irritating the skin intentionally and generally hurts wonderfully when you use it. It's definitely not recommended for suspension, it's far too weak and would drop the rope bottom.

Sisal -

Sisal is the type of rope often used for cat scratching posts. It's too weak for suspension, but it's got a delightful scratchy feel to it. It's very good for rope torture and general sadism/masochism. It's not easy to clean and you don't have as many width options as you do with most rope. It has really good tooth though, and it leaves some great marks!

This is probably more detailed than you were looking for, but I love talking about these things!! Also, obviously since fiction is a place to explore things that aren't necessarily safe/possible in reality, not all fictional depictions of bondage and rope play will follow these rules. If you want to experiment with rope in real life, you should be looking at more sources than just this post.

aahhhh nova this is so nonspecific i'm going to Struggle

ed does the rough stuff but stede is a huge BITCH in a way that ed just isn't petty enough to be

stede is into the Aesthetics of sex in a way none of izzy's past partners ever have been. he likes shibari, he likes predicament bondage, he likes dress up, he just likes anything pretty and he likes to Look at izzy. drives izzy crazy.

izzy does not actually ever call ed "daddy" but he does call stede that sometimes. if he'd been asked previously stede would have said he was Most Assuredly Not into that, but after izzy does it once kind of on accident he discovers something about himself lmao.

because of this experience he reacts to any attempt by ed to talk about stede as if it is a trap. this is only mostly a joke.

stede is nervous at first to leave marks on izzy, thinking he hasn't quite earned the position in izzy's life to lay claim to him like that. izzy is forced to use his words to tell stede that, to him, he'd already let stede lay claim to him the first time he touched him.

summary : it's 1 am so this is getting posted since it's technically the sixth lol. anyhow, i'm changing the kinktober schedule so i only post monday-friday, bc i need time to work on other stuff so i'll update the list tomorrow !! this is a poem very loosely about shibari and also just me feeling bad about myself

a/n : sorry all this is uhhh bad and also just self indulgent, i wanted to try writing a poem because i've never done it before and with all the october prompts i decided to write a few so expect like two more shitty poems this month, apologies in advance.

I will not ask him to love me.

I am unclean, unfit,

and dirty.

If I was clean he already would.

Instead he will be alone,

beside me.

I will tell him what

I need and he will

understand.

Because he knows that I don’t want to be held.

I just want to be still.

So he’ll do this for me.

He will twist me into knots

only to unravel them later.

And in return he himself will be unraveled.

He will bind my chest in stars and moons

and webs. And my breast will jut out

from the pressure.

He will bind my hands behind me

in a cruel fashion because he

For if my hands were free I might just take

21. If you wrote a “missing scene” in [insert fic], what would it be?

oh man. well, for 'universe' it would be an actual planned ending lol, rather than just calling it done at a certain point because it was too tangled up with irl stuff going on at the time. it's actually too long ago for me to remember whether i had specific plans for the ending, but i know i wanted jev to have more closure over his past and to work more into him feeling freed from his past demons.

for you can find it if you, it would involve switching POV entirely but i would LOVE to have written about james going off to find the ropes to do an impromptu shibari demonstration and just having a moment of being like...what the fuck is going on. i'm so obsessed with those moments of clarity you get sometimes in life when your silly little gremlin brain is just taking you in a direction and you're helpless at the steering wheel like "oh fuck guess this is happening now" and then just for a moment your rational brain cuts in and goes WAIT WHAT and then you're off again. i definitely think james would have had one of those moments where he recognised that he was heading down a very particular path and there would have been a few fleeting seconds where he could have chosen to stop it all, come back in and tell andré he can't find the ropes or he's changed his mind or he feels sick or whatever. but he doesn't.

23. What’s a trope, AU, or concept you’ve never written, but would like to?

ooooh good question! so much as i bang on about how i'm not really into AUs, there are a couple i would really love to write one day but they require like, actual brainpower and stuff.

the biggest one is the crash AU, with toto playing the part of vaughan. i don't think i will ever write this because the idea of writing about professional racing drivers dying or being injured in car crashes makes me very, very nervous because i am too prone to magical thinking about that kind of thing. but fuck, it would be SO GOOD.

lando camboy AU. i might write this one at some point? again though, i feel slightly nervy about writing it when i don't have lived experience of sex work, but i think that one is probably just me overthinking things.

mmm i'm sure there's more but my brain has gone blank! ballet AU would be fun but i don't have the knowledge required to do it justice, sadly.

and then i would also really love to write a hardcore CNC kidnap kink scene, and find it actually quite mad that i haven't gotten around to it yet because it's such a cast-iron irl kink for me and it lends itself so well to the fantasy element of fic.

30. Have you ever written something that was out of your comfort zone? If so, what was it, and how did it affect your approach to writing fic thereafter?

the toto/christian hideousness all the blood runs hot before it's cold was pretty far out of my comfort zone (which is why you had to nag me so much to actually finish it lmao) because it was the first time i'd leaned so heavily into the psychosexual side of things, writing characters who are heavily in denial and enjoy manipulating each other. previously although i'd written a lot of power dynamics, they were always consensual and either based in established and healthy relationships or poorly negotiated but ultimately fulfilling hookups. so writing this felt pretty unnerving and i struggled a lot at times with getting the tone right.

having said that, it's probably the fic i'm proudest of and i think my writing is at its strongest in that piece, so it was a valuable lesson to learn that actually i CAN write in this way!

i think also in the past i had felt an internal pressure to be a sort of positive mouthpiece for kink? like, power dynamics, kink and edgeplay have traditionally had SUCH a bad rap for being unhealthy, abusive, blah blah blah and so i always wanted my fics to demonstrate that actually that's not the case, and it can be incredibly healthy and loving. which is demonstrably and unequivocably true! but it was important for me to give myself permission to write about something that was not that, and to take my own advice that fiction doesn't have to ascribe to some sort of barometer of moral purity to be worthy.
