// rating Little characters in animation //
After a recent ask regarding distinguishing characters with dwarfism in the world of animation, I thought I'd take the time to list some that I feel are clearly little people (whether explicitly stated or not, as it rarely is) and provide my thoughts on their representation!
Tumblr media
Edna Mode, The Incredibles (2004 and 2018) ^
10/10
she absolutely slays the scene in my opinion - she's smart, creative, passionate about her work, and confident in her position.
she plays a vital roll in the functionality of the main characters' quests, being the designer of their super suits
Tumblr media
Gilbert Huph, The Incredibles (2004) ^
1/10
Really the only point this character gets is that they have the proportions of specifically Achondroplasia dwarfism pretty much spot on.
To put it plainly, this man is an asshole. An A+ example of the small and angry archetype, he is one-dimensionaly furious and very 'of the man'.
To put salt on the wound, Huph gets seriously injured as he's picked up and thrown through several walls by Mr. Incredible. Though he's a sort of villain in this case, it was painful as a little person (with less dramatic but not unsimilar trauma) to watch.
Tumblr media
Mr. Piccolo, Porco Rosso (1992) ^
4/10
Having Piccolo on this list could be debated since he's also rather rat like, but based on his proportions he stuck me right away as an LP
Though at times a bit conniving, Piccolo is a rather likable character in my opinion. He's a successful business man, clever, and a feminist in a quite sexist era.
Tumblr media
Kurokawa, The Wind Rises (2013) ^
0/10
Another A+ example of the small and angry archetype, Kurokawa is angry and unlikable
Tumblr media
The Seven Dwarfs, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) ^
0/10
While being some of the longest standing and most famous dwarf characters, they are one of the poorest cases for representation
They are one dimensional, gnome like, goofy characters who could have easily had greater backstories and important rolls, had they not been incredibly true to their time.
Tumblr media
Kiko, Baymax! (2022) ^
10/10
Competing for my favourite with Edna, Kiko may be the best animated character with dwarfism I've seen to date.
Her story is humanizing and shines light on the disability, and she is well rounded and overall great representation
As I said in a previous post about the series, there could be an argument made that she dips into the small and angry archetype, but I would pose an exception as she is obviously dealing with trauma.
*
There are likely characters that I've missed in this list, so if anyone has others they'd like my thoughts on, send them my way! These are simply the main ones that come to mind :)
-Elliot (they/them)

Some characters from Hello from the Hallowoods, but I wanted to try a Studio Ghilbli-adjacent style this time, I feel it could work very well for such a forest-heavy setting!

In your mind you can create a story that starts with a going away party. You can start something knowing how it ends. You can have control. But in order for stories to good they have to be interesting. And in order for a story that starts with death or change to not just be sad the thing that's ending has to be terrible. But in order for that to be true you have to make the story sad by explaining the past. But in order the make the mystery compelling you have to wrap up everything that happens at the beginning. And it's hard to write a story forwards and backwards at the same time but it's what you must do. Studio Ghilbli movies do this by not focusing on the past before the tradgedy or even revealing much about itand relying on the delights in reconecting with the outdoors. Also they're movies. The Umbrella Academy is about this but they kind of lose it because it was a comic ans comics operate such that the beginning was released before the end was conceived. That's why superheroes are constantly being rewritten. They're a new type of story. Bojack Horseman pulls it off because it starts years after the end when he finally starts to process all of it. I know Bojack Horseman doesn't look as fun because it's an ironic adult cartoon but it's quirky too and it's a masterpiece of story-telling. It's a story about the stories in stories. It tells them through Bojack confronting his old allies in the war against himself. And if you already know about Bojack Horseman I reccommend Moral Orel. And those are some pieces of art about making art. That's art made by people who had no choice but to make something disgusting and they and they had the prviledge to face the challenge with dignity. Thank You fr coming to my ted talk.

Is Nausicaä not a Ghilbli movie? I wouldn't have voted for it anyway (I initially misread the instruction as vote for your favourite, which was why I noticed the absence) but is there a reason it isn't included?
i was just thinking abt making a clarification post about this lol. nausicaa is directed by hayao miyazaki but it isn't made by studio ghibli. i know we all include it when we talk about ghibli movies, but on technicality, it was not included in the poll

so I've been binging the magnus archives for the first time. Aaaaaabsolutely loving it. Creepy af.
But you know what's even creepier?
My brain deciding that it should be made into a TV series. An animated TV series. Produced by Studio Ghilbly.
The idea chills me to my bones.
