No matter how many times I go back to the Gold Saucer fight, I CAN'T STOP LAUGHING HIS DRAMA QUEEN ASS! 🤣 He calls Dio during Rude and Elena's fight, told the Turks NOTHING about his plans to enter the ring, made the most FLASHY entrance in the entire game, and proceeds to blatantly flirt with Cloud IN FRONT OF EVERYINE'S POPCORN. I want to thank the FFVII development staff so much for giving us these glorious President Rufus Shinra scenes/lines.

He was really playing in everybody's face with it, the man clearly lives for a fucking audience...it's insane.

Actual pyrotechnics and a spirited introduction 😂 his need for that one-on-one was keeping the man up at night or SOMETHING.

Cloud did as commanded on the authority in his voice alone, which was surprising, and Rufus gentled his grip around the sharp cut of his Little Bird’s jawline, musing at the newfound pliancy. 

Cloud had been both strong and capable before Reno had brought him down, able to fight confidently, make decisions and follow them through, even if they were to his own detriment. There was a lot of strength in his character when they had first met that seemed to be mostly absent. Perhaps the shadow of it was there, but the entirety of it had not yet been rediscovered, though it seemed it would only be a matter of time. 

Even after everything, loss of memory included, Cloud had been snarky to the point Rufus would have sorely liked to tumble him protesting over his knee until he showed some respect.

Perhaps, if that mouthy little creature returned, there would be time for that later.

Perhaps he would provoke it on purpose, just for the pleasure of educating his Little Bird on how to keep his petulance in check.

Just sitting here at work marveling over the fact that, on just their second meeting, Rufus propositions Cloud.

I’m sure from his perspective that went in his head something like ‘he’s obviously formidable, let’s get him to go search and destroy this wayward Shinra asset,’ meanwhile that asset is Sephiroth. It’s just a business deal! Right?! Right????? Of course he thinks this way. I’m tickled.

“Cloud, I own you. Cloud, you’re making me sweat. Cloud, I read your file. Cloud, you’re so fascinating and clever. Cloud, do my crimes for me.”

He’s kind of obsessed with that lil blond binch and I don’t blame him. Goes so lovely with Cloud’s propensity in Advent Children to use ‘needing to meet with Rufus’ as an avoidance mechanism.

No one brought this up yet, so we GOTTA talk about how the staff is emphasizing the bond between Rufus and Darkstar! I thought it was adorable how Rufus called Darkstar "D" (he even does in "Opera Omnia") during the first game, it's so adorable to see D always at Rufus's side. I squealed when I saw Rufus pet D at that one Shinra meeting and growled at Hojo for getting too close. D wanted to jump in from the get-go during the GS fight and jumped in partway to save Rufus. Their bond is lovely. T_T

I am really glad they did this as well. It's another little narrative device that gives a window into Rufus' psyche. And that Gold Saucer battle is such a bitch because of it 😂

I will say I'm a bit sad that the name 'Dark Nation' didn't stick because it's just so EXTRA, but the nickname D is good, regardless. Rufus and his weird desire to subjugate powerful things and then dote on them...

Lol, I think some of Rufus's Japanese lines for the GS fight is probably kinker. I think the English line for "Let's see, shall we?" (said in that super seductive tone...) is "It's time for punishment/discipline" in Japanese? And the "muzzled" line is literally "It's time I put a collar on you"? ASDFGHJKL, my Japanese kinda sucks, but that's essentially what it was. It's so funny, too, because I remember fans saying that the ENG made Rufus's WAAY more hornier than his JPN lines in Remake! XD

I LOVE to hear this, for all the reasons! My Japanese is so-so but I should search videos of the JP dialogue. As if muzzling wasn't enough, collaring is my true weakness 😩

One can argue that Rufus and Cloud did have an instant attraction upon their first meeting, given how sexually charged their fight was in "Remake". XD What heterosexual explanation can be given to lines like "I own you", "just the two of us", "naughty, naughty", and "let's make it a night to remember"??? RUFUS WANTS THAT SOLDIER BOY BAD, LMAO.

Oh my god, and even Cloud throwing it back, “think you got my number?” (And Rufus saying “not at all, you’re making me sweat). 🥵🥵🥵

Then ofc all of Rufus’ fun in-battle things like “naughty naughty,” “you’ll like this,” and “now, where were we?”

It’s a fic writer’s gold mine tbqh. They didn’t have to make Rufus such a flirtatious dominant bastard but they chose to, and I think that’s amazing! 🙏🏼 sorry to be repetitive, your ask made me want to rewatch the Remake fight and I couldn’t help but share the dialogue again 😂

I'm redoing Rufus's Gold Saucer battle and CACKLING AGAIN OVER HOW HORNY RUFUS IS BEING AND CLOUD'S PLAYING HARD TO GET. Rufus: "Meet Kamui--a new gift to myself." Cloud (sarcastic): "Scary." Rufus: "Oh, PLEASE. Don't PRETEND you're NOT IMPRESSED." Dear Lord, they're doing this shit IN FRONT OF AN AUDIENCE! XD Pro tip: Players, adjust your background music settings for the ENTIRE game, because the default is SO FREAKING LOUD and DROWNS OUT the dialogue. DON'T MISS THESE AWESOME LINE DELIVERIES.

THANK YOU for pointing this out!! There is something a bit odd with the sound mixing, I thought. My husband blamed it on our TV but I made sure to tone the background music down a couple clicks to prioritize the dialogue.

*sweats* I need to watch that fight again...I'm DOZENS of hours away from it in my own playthrough...

What happened to Dark Star? I haven't seen Advent Children for years, so I'm assuming Dark Nation is out of the picture, but is Dark Star in the picture at all for Next Time You Call?

To be honest, my assumption when I began NTYC was that Dark Nation was dead, and so the line from chapter one directly references the fact that Cloud killed him:

He dreams instead of Rufus Shinra...the way he snarls as Cloud cuts down Dark Nation in a single violent swing of his sword. 

I just saw Advent Children again before the release of Rebirth when it was enjoying a limited run in theaters, and Dark Nation was nowhere to be found. I'm assuming his survival (and rebrand as Darkstar), is a dyed-in-the-wool retcon. I'm totally okay with that. Rufus surviving the end of FF7 is the first and most major retcon that I can remember, and I never once was assed about it. He's such a great character, it would've been a shame if he met his end that day on the top floor of Shinra HQ (like his disgusting father...no thanks).

I never thought to include Dark Nation past the events in the original game, so I can't. I don't want Rebirth to change too much of the fic's foundational canon. It will only make it more difficult for me to keep things straight going forward, and I don't want the fic to end up having an obvious pre-and-post Remake series identity crisis. With the exception of utilizing Remake/Rebirth's beautifully expanded maps and locations, and the occasional harmless background tidbit (like learning exactly how/when Cloud left Nibelheim through both Traces of Two Pasts and Rebirth), I'm going to predominately defer to the canon that existed right up until 2016.

This was a great question, and definitely something that stays on my mind now that so much more attention has returned to FF7 in general. I think the thing that will probably affect me and my depiction of Rufus in NTYC going forward is the knowledge of just how strong his connection to his lil beastie was, because of the fact that I wrote it in such a way as to make Cloud directly responsible for killing the man's dog...yikes...

Maybe he'll get Rufus a puppy, someday, who knows? (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)

(Prt.1) OMG, I'm glad you bought up AC and Rufus's proposition in Rebirth. I've actually seen folks saying that it didn't make sense to Rufus and Cloud to make a deal, and I was SHOCKED that people thought that because it seemed so obvious to me that 1.) it was an obvious parallel to their scene in AC and 2.) both Rufus and Cloud are REALLY SIMILIAR in personalities. Both are young, charismatic, pragmatic leaders who are willing to do broker deals that mutually benefits them long-term.

I'm going to answer these bit by bit because I love everything you pointed out!

Also, it's odd for people to say this because in the original they really do have goals that are aligned. It's more that Rufus just wants them the fuck out of his way if they get in it. Also, RUFUS LITERALLY PROPOSITIONS CLOUD FULL STOP in the original!!! He says "I guess we won't be friends," meaning he fully was down for a partnership from day one.

Ya'll, real talk: RUFUS IS SO GODDAMN THIRSTY FOR CLOUD! The devs took their Remake interactions and intensified it two-fold! The way Rufus says Cloud's name is like he's seducing him. "You are FASCINATING individual, Cloud Stife." "Your file was as GRIPPING as it was...enlightening." "Clever you." "You're still a Shinra employee--at least on paper. And as YOUR BOSS..." "Really, though, it's past time I MUZZLED YOU." And he's trolling Cloud the entire time about knowing he wasn't a SOLDIER! XD

The "FASCINATING individual" bit just blew my fucking brains out. And not him reading the file and knowing full well what it contains...and yet still playing along. Always thinking, that one. God, I'm so excited about how they've fleshed him out. Some of his best moments are yet to come, I'm convinced! He truly is intrigued by Cloud, and let's be real, he's right to follow that fascination. I can't believe I have to wait YEARS for more but they gave us quite a lot to play with in the interim, at least.

Real talk for a moment, when you first see that Rufus cutout in game I literally shouted that I need it...and then you can actually win one!!! And then you can go stare at it at Johnny's stupid resort while Cloud is shirtless!!! I was very pleased. Extremely pleased. There was a lot of pleasure involved.

So happy you're enjoying "Rebirth". The devs gave us some good Rufus/Cloud scenes. Totally love how those two ended up flirting during their second fight at GS. Honestly, the devs just did a great job fleshing out Rufus (and the Turks) as characters and bringing up a lot of characterization that was established in the novels into the game. That one scene where Glenn mocks Rufus for being a "pigheaded, pathetic, daddy-hating" child gave me chills and made me wanna clap at the same time!

That Gold Saucer fight really threw me for a loop, I was shook for so many reasons. I'm so thrilled that they made him one tough cookie and decided to stick with this theme of one-on-one. Does Cloud HAVE to fight him alone??? No. But does he immediately acquiesce? Of course he does 😂

As far as Rufus' response to Glenn, it tickled me to no end that he was basically like...yeah bitch, I own it. Being a daddy-hating handful nightmare human with high standards and low morals really gave him every single thing he possesses. And BOY does he like possessing things!! And pointing out when he possesses those things!!!

Two Turks things I'm delighted about: Elena's character, her VA's performance, everything. She's fantastic and I loved every second she showed up, even though she has that tendency (in the original) to be the bratty, brash, kinda dumb one. Those things are true, but she was also always very formidable. All the Turks were goofy one minute and downright intimidating the next, so I'm happy to see how beautifully that balance was struck with all of them. Second thing: TSENG ON A BATTLEFIELD. I was so convinced he was about to just call in a heli or something, but no. He gagged me!

The tone of the game is just amazing. Everyone in the FF7 universe had the tendency to play comic relief when the moment called for it, so I'm glad it felt so closely tied to the original game in that way. It's more like real life, isn't it? Sometimes everyone is laughing and the next moment it's back to business. And you never get a heads up on tragedy.
