what if the strawhats had different roles on the ship⁉️ i swapped everyone’s roles except for luffy because i can’t imagine him being anything but the captain

these are loose redesigns since their canon designs don’t really read as their roles all that much to begin with. some extra doodles and ideas for this in the cut !!

nami, vice captain: i took a lot of inspiration from her beta design!! canon nami already bosses everyone around so she fits right into the role. she wields an extendable staff (usopp still makes it for her); she lost her arm over the time-skip like how zoro lost his eye. i LOVE drawing cargo pants and boots, so she ended up with a sorta bottom-heavy design. frankly it’s probably not her style but i like how she looks

zoro, the cook: my foolproof logic is zoro uses swords = good with knives. he does not use katanas to cut produce however, just normal knives. i was trying to go for “sweaty ramen guy” with the towel around his neck. the majority of the shit he cooks would probably be drowned in alcohol. he also wears his bandana the majority of the time now!! it completes the ramen guy look

sanji, the sniper: i also took inspiration from his beta design for this!!! he has guns!! and perfect aim of course. i was going for more of a mafioso look so germa 66 would be like, a mafia organization on top of all the other villain shit they already do. he has two guns but i didn’t draw a holster bc that’s annoying🤞 he lights his cigarettes with his guns. how would that even work? don’t ask me

usopp, the navigator: his artistic talent lends itself to creating perfect maps! he also still tinkers, making nami’s staff as well as having a specialty for compasses. he uses a slingshot still (no perfect aim we gotta nerf him) and shoots weather-related projectiles. his goggles serve as binoculars, they can zoom to several different distances. i drew him in his zou outfit purely bc it’s my favorite one

chopper, the helmsman: he would predominately use heavy point while maneuvering the wheel. i changed his hat up to look more like a sailor’s cap, with an anchor symbol instead of an X. to be honest i don’t have much else bc helmsman doesn’t bring much to my mind :(

franky, the musician: ROCK N ROLL BABY YEEAHHH come on his stage presence is unmatched. he’s still a cyborg, he has instruments all over his body like apoo does but they were installed manually. his personality changes depending on what genre he’s playing but rock n roll is his default B) (ex. classical calls for a refined gentleman)

robin, the shipwright: her devil fruit gives her as many helpful hands as she needs! she developed nami’s arm (definitely installed some random shit she did Not ask for). she has a robot mecha that she’s able to pilot all by herself using clones. i changed her orange sunglasses to goggle eyewear

brook, the doctor: the irony of being nursed back to health by a literal skeleton 💀the irony of being the doctor of the rumbar pirates yet being the only survivor, saving no one from the poison 💀 i went for a plague doctor look! IM VERY HAPPY WITH HOW HE TURNED OUT i was really tempted to give him the plague mask too, but i feel that would’ve changed his appearance too much compared to the others

jinbei, the archaeologist: the shape of this man demands a little pair of round glasses on his face. he’s an intellectual i tell you!!! plus still a fishman karate master. the history of joyboy and fishman island being so intertwined is how he developed an interest in history

▸ His hat is literally the most important thing Luffy owns. It is literally the physical manifestation of his dream, and his "crown".

▸ So, naturally, you getting to wear his hat is the highest privilege. He's essentially trusting you with his dream.

▸ So when Luffy sees you wearing Brook's tophat.. He's a little distressed. Does this mean you like Brook more than him...? :[

▸ Hes not absolutely heartbroken, but it stirs something new and unpleasant in his gut. (jealousy). He plops his hat on your head and everything's fine again :]

▸ HE IS SO PETTY. AND JEALOUS. AND HE REFUSES TO COMMUNICATE IT LIKE A NORMAL PERSON.

▸ So naturally Ace shows the whole world you're his by placing the biggest statement piece of his outfit on you. The hat.

▸ But if you voluntarily want to wear the hat? Wear a piece of him on you because you just. Like it? Ace is on his KNEES. He struggles to feel wanted and to know that you love having a part of him with you??? Its so good. It soothes his soul.

▸ So of course the minute you meet Sabo, one of the closest people to Ace's heart- You destroy him emotionally. Hes devastated, betrayed, absolutely heartbroken.

▸ How could you wear Sabo's stupid little tophat ??? with the goggles that don't even serve a purpose??? Ace is disgruntled. He's offended. And he will be giving you the silent treatment for an hour tops before he comes crawling back.

▸ His hat is practically shoved onto your head. He's still mad, still has that little green monster clawing at his insides, but he's calmer with his oversized (equally stupid) hat perched on your head.

Law

▸ Law's hat is So important to him. It was given to him by his parents, so naturally to even BEGIN to earn the right to touch his hat is a Long, arduous journey.

▸ But once you've wormed your way into Law's heart- every part of him is yours. Including that sweet, warm hat.

▸ Law loves how you look in any of his clothes. He has a possessive streak a mile long, and no matter how good he is at hiding it he ALWAYS has a little smirk on his face when you wear anything thats his.

▸ The hat just ramps this up to 11. Something That core to his appearance, identity- unmistakably HIS, on you, who is now also unmistakably his? A dream come absolutely true.

▸ So naturally when hes sees the captian of the fucking strawhats putting his .. straw hat on you, Law nearly explodes. The straw hat is unmistakably LUFFY'S. The straw hat that is LUFFY'S, which is now on your head. Law short circuts. Seriously considers ending the alliance here and now by swapping Luffy's head and leg.

▸ He comes to a ... Peaceful? resolution when His hat is placed on its rightful pedestal... and Luffy (and hat) are out of his line of sight.

okay i was gonna make a short “haha funny makes me feel better” post but i got carried away in my tags so i’m making it one big complaint post. bear with me.

i wanna say something like “i’m worried about my character design/art style/same face syndrome/etc until i remember the women in one piece” but i’m scared the one piece fans will fucking get ™ me

believe me i don’t hate one piece it’s just not my type of story. and the art style is fun and wacky and handles itself well don’t get me wrong but it’s just. every single woman has the same face and body type. and don’t get me started on that fucking body type itself. i mean bro look at the diversity in design in just the strawhats! then look at the women.

i have a similar gripe with dragon ball and how every male and male-adjacent character has the same toned and chiseled form and every woman and woman-adjacent character is short and skinny and has zero muscle definition, even the dedicated fighters. and the notably powerful and dangerous fat character (majin buu) is treated like an absolute joke and only comedic relief in that form, taken seriously really when he’s in his muscular or thin forms (which are. also notably more powerful than the default fat form) (also: see ribrianne in a similar vein: though her bigger form is her more powerful form look me in the eyes and genuinely tell me she was ever taken seriously as a character. please. i mean it.). even fucking HERCULE (certified fraud that cannot properly fight) has more defined muscle than kale & caulifla & kefla combined, who are arguably some of their universe’s strongest mortal fighters. (true there’s also cabba, but cabba is also treated either as something between a joke and a less-serious detail or just to push vegeta to get another palette swap power up, and kale’s legendary super saiyan gives her actual muscles but obviously that’s just the nature of the form & a callback to broly before the super canonization of him).

on the thought of the “big three” naruto’s problem may be less in design (though i do have many gripes about the “practicality” of having many women have some skirt-adjacent outfit as literal soldiers but okay) and more in writing, but like the problem is still there and it really only got worse as the series went on (it’s probably still there in boruto i just don’t care to pay attention anymore; i play with the blorbos when i want to how i want to on my own etc)

and now i’m like. huh. see there’s a similar problem here among a lot of the “staple” animes but i’m too scared of the fanbases to say anything else about it most of the time. call it the nature of shonen or whatever if you want i don’t care. i’d just like the women to not be totally idk. is fucked over the right phrase here? i don’t care it’s late rn just fill in the sentence yourself i’m sure the point gets across.

doing what they would wear during Christmas to keep with the times <3

Kenji would definitely be subtle in his outfits. maybe a spot of red here, a dash of green there, and somehow it comes out very Christmassy and classy. he probably also has matching outfits with Sanji where one of them wears red and the other dons green, much to the annoyance of Luffy and Zoro for stealing their colors (it ends with Sanji and Zoro at each others’ throats while Kenji and Usopp high five and share a bowl of popcorn)(Usopp was too scared to do it so he had Kenji wear the matching outfit)

this is what I think the matching outfit would be like, Kenji wears red while Sanji wears green to really drive up the annoyance factor hehe. the only thing I would change would be the black coat into a brown one

Mari on the other hand, doesn’t change up her appearance, not for Christmas or for any other holiday. she might swap out her usual teal hair ribbon for a red one and don a little poinsettia brooch on her coat, but that’s the extent of her outfit change unless the Strawhats are in an alliance with Kid and Heart Pirates during the time, bc then somehow Mari acquires a fluffy red coat that’s perfect for the occasion but a bit too big on her, and Kid resolutely doesn’t look her way while Law practically drills a hole into her back with his stare

the dress is what I imagine one of Mari’s to be like (with the color being teal instead of red), and the brooch is what she would add to her clothing during Christmas!

Zoro. Do I wanna see Zoro in Usopp's classic overalls? Yes please. He'd probably lose the shirt, maybe one strap is hanging lose. Usopp would probably hate that Zoro is pulling it off in such a thotty way.

Nami. Sanji’s iconic Water 7 orange 3-piece. And this one is purely cause I Would Like To See It. I mean fuck can you imagine....I’d die on the spot. More Nami in suits in general please, she steals em from Sanji when she takes Vivi out on expensive dates.

Usopp. I already headcanon that Luffy and Usopp share clothes all the time. So I'd love to see Usopp wearing Luffy's sunflower shirt, maybe he has his own and they match (Franky has one too)

Sanji. Ok... this one was hard cause naturally I wanna see Sanji is every outfit ever. Specially every Zoro outfit out there. So honestly all of them, BUT Zoro's Sabaody red striped shirt with his classic pants + haramaki combo. (And also Sanji with the blue tank top...cause I'm biased for skypiea zoro...as we all know)
